Great, Caring, Nice, Efficient, Teacher!
stats is supposed to be hard right? not this class. draper's OH with TA's do the hw for you, weekly quizzes and midterm were fair. GO TO LECTURE. seems serious and boring in lecture, awesome interesting, caring professor outside of class. highly recom
Genuinely tries to make class interesting & fun, but generally fails to do so (mostly on account of the subject matter). Very easy class but TAs dont know the material at all. Hard to give the guy a bad rating though... hes really nice.
Very nice guy and fairly easy class. You get homework and take home test help in sections. If you go to lectures then you don't need to read (or buy) the books.
Draper is the nicest, most genuinely caring professor on campus. This doesn't mean you'll love his class (stats can be a bit dry) but he does his darndest to make things interesting and accesible. I took this course for the N and Q GE's and recommend the same for others. Again, he's a great guy.
i honestly loved this guy! he makes stats a lot easier by giving tons of help outside of class-- go to office hours and he will even give u the hw answers! he's a REALLY nice guy and great teacher (although his handwriting can be hard to read at times, he makes up for it by putting notes online)
I would say that David is probably the best professor at UCSC. He's a very nice guy and very helpful. Go to his office hours, and you can easily get straight As on all the homework. The class is easy, and he wants to make sure that everyone passes. For stats, wait for David to teach it. You won't regret it. Anyone can pass with flying colors. Easy.
dont take stats unless u have this teacher...i hated math, and he actually made me understand it and like it (sorta). Seriously though, he helps you with your homework, and the final and midterm arent that bad...awsome teacher who really wants you to learn. Take this class- hey, if i got an A-, you can too
Messy writing but pretty lax on test etc... do well on the hmwk and dont buy the FTP book if he recommends it, its not helpful

it is obvious that david draper loves stats. however, his handwriting and round-about way of teaching make it hard to understand. i struggled to stay in class and found myself walking out about 80% of the time. but he loved his subject, and i find that admirable.
An amazing professor. He's genuinely concerned that his students understand the material. He's very approachable and has consistent office hours. If he thinks you are trying, he'll do all he can to see that you succeed.
Prof. Draper is an awesome professor, loves what he teaches and wants his students to pass. I had take home midterm and final from this guy and open note quizzes. This kind of instruction helped me understand the material quickly!! And he's a really nice approachable guy. Wish I went to his office hours more, he's VERY helpful! I respect him dearly
One of the few professors who actually care. His hand writing can be hard to read, you get use to it; don't let it discourage you. He really cares about his students; is very approachable. GO TO OFFICE HOURS-they can be really helpful, esp if you feel lost. He gears class towards student interest/majors.
Super easy class. he is a great guy and pretty down to earth. he cares a LOT about his students doin good in his class and even accommodated his overflowed class by creating an entirely other lecture on his own time for those who could make that lecture time instead. the TA's were the most helpful part though, so depends on your TA.
Professor Draper is a very good teacher. Cares a lot about his students. He teaches some sections and some labs, so no need to worry about bad TAs. His OH give answers to hw problems. Take-home midterm and final. Very funny and helpful.
He is an awesome teacher. The course material was really boring but he was awesome at showing the class exactly how it could be applied in real life situations that were related to our majors. Office hours are insanely helpful. Go to HIS OHs, and you'll be fine!
The nicest man ever! Take home midterm and final and he will explain ALL of the questions for you, step by step. He's dorky funny and the friendliest teacher I've had yet. Ask him for help and you'll get 100% on everything, he wants you to succeed.
easy course; if i were you i would try to attend the discussion that he teaches since he is the one that writes the answer sheet for everything. The photocopied "book" he offers is 60$, most of it is handy for the course, everything is take-home; just make time to go to office hours to make sure your answers are correct to get full credit.
Nice guy, willing to help, wants you to pass. only problem is the useless text book that he wrote himself. Its probably a good book because he is really into statistics, but more than half of it is hand written it is useless because he has the worst handwriting of anyone ever. seriously If i was a handle of jack in i would have better writing
Awesome instruction; kicks the crap out of most, if not all, of the professors at UCSC. His handwriting is lousy, but the guy is a doctor. Half the course correlates to his half-written book. The rest of the course correlates to his hand-written notes. He speaks very logically, and is a treasure for students who are neural-untypical.
This guy is a friendly professor and willing to help anyone. The only problem is his textbook and lecturing style. Draper writes his own textbook and explains using a projector. The majority of the examples are in his own handwriting, which is atrocious at best, and is difficult to find necessary charts for homework. (Not to mention the weight.)
A great teacher & genuinely nice guy. His notes are essentially illegible though- be sure to attend discussion sections to clarify the finer details of the course.
Draper is a teacher who is personally invested in helping you to get an A. All tests are take home and he basically goes over the answers to the midterms if you attend his office hours. In his lecture he can be pretty confusing due to bad handwriting and sometimes over complicating things, but this guy really cares.
David is a genius. He's really good at statistics and has written a billion articles that prove it. One thing: his handwriting is TERRIBLE! Really, it's awful. The good thing is that you get used to it. Listen to what he says, don't look at what he writes. He's a good professor who is truly invested in you, but he's almost too smart!
OMG! this teacher was amazing! He had excellent math jokes and he was super approachable. He explained stats to the necessary details. plus take home midterm and final! t was the easiest A I ever got in any UC class! If you need to take stats and you are not very good at math, take Draper even over summer. I took him summer and it was so easy.
Draper was a really legit teacher. He actually cares that students are understanding what he's doing and he'll help you drape the take home midterms and finals if you visit him at his office hours. The only problem is his handwriting, but if you've taken a hieroglyphics class, it might help you out a little bit in deciphering things
Draper is fantastic. He's clear, concise, and pretty funny. He seems to genuinely care about his students' success and well-being. As an added bonus, he's well-spoken and is a good writer, both of which are rarities among math profs I've encountered. Only downside is his handwriting.. Take his class - seriously. You won't regret it!
Professor Draper is one of the best professors that I have had at UCSC. He genuinely cares about students learning the material and offers so much help with the homework and other class assignments. I wasn't expecting to learn as much as I did,but I left the class quite satisfied with the knowledge I had acquired. I would definitely rec.this class!
Loved draper, he really cares about if you actually learn statistics. He literally does the homework for you in office hours and has really funny stories during lecture. He gave a take-home midterm and take-home final and basically did the problems in office hours. His handwriting sucks but you learn to read it. Lecture were online when I took it
Draper really cares about his students. He is a great professor and a great human being! It is very easy to find help in his class when you need it. Lectures are very helpful if you want to get a good understanding of the class and he gives a take home midterm and final. I would recommend this class for anyone who needs stats.
He is hilarious! And a fantastic teacher. I never thought I would like statistics so much, but the way he structures his class is really in favor of the students and shows he really wants you to succeed. His office hours are a godsend and the most helpful tool in the class
You will be lucky to have this man teach you statistics. Couldn't have asked for a better professor. Amazing guy.
Definitely take him for AMS 7 if you have the option. His final and midterm are both take home and you can ask any questions you have about the exams during office hours. He even has extra office hours on the weekend during finals week. Section is mandatory and there's a small quiz at the end of each section. Make sure not to skip class.
Prof. Draper is pretty great. He gave an impressive amount of his time and was very patient with our huge class. Good teacher - tries to draw examples from a wide variety of contexts to make the material relevant and useful for life beyond his classroom. Go to office hours, and take many deep breaths while trying to decipher his handwriting...
Draper is amazing! He makes an effort to make class interesting. He's approachable and very helpful. He makes stats simple and straight forward. His midterm and final are take home, and if you go to his office hours he'll help you with it. He sells his own book which I found super helpful. Took him over the summer and regret nothing!
AMS-131 should never be taught as a 5-week course over the summer (seriously, UCSC, what were you thinking?) but Dr. Draper made it manageable by having lots of office hours (go to all of them! He helps with homework!) and spending time with each individual student. His lectures are awesome compared to the dry textbook. Take Draper. He is the man.
AMS 131 is a very difficult class, but Draper was there to support us the entire time. Trying to learn that much material in just 5 weeks is a tall order, but Draper's hilarious lectures and out-of-class accessibility made the workload manageable. Take home final doesn't mean it's easy; you need to work for it. It's all very rewarding, though!
Other professors teach stats, Draper teaches you how to use statistics to solve real problems. The way he teaches is clear enough to understand even through webcasts, his assignments ask you to apply what he has taught to reach conclusions using actual data from problems you've faced in the field. GO TO OFFICE HOURS.
Draper is the best AMS prof. He wants all his students to pass. Take home midterm and final. Even tho it's AMS7 but it doesn't required scientific knowledge so i would take this over ams 5. Only con is that you have to buy his hand-written textbook for his hw and discussion. his handwriting is hard to read. Homework is long.
Best person to take AMS 131. Cares that you learn the content, and not just what you get on the test. Exams are take home, and you have the whole quarter to do them, and quizzes are open notes. Encourages working in groups on them to help learn the content better. 131 is hard because it uses calculus, statistics, history, programming, and proofs.
I took this class over summer. This class was over the span of 5-weeks. In my opinion, this class should not be offered in 5-weeks since its extremely dense and hard. The teacher was good but, I couldn't really grasp all the concepts with the fast pace.
Draper is the man! AMS 131 is a difficult course but he made it easier. There are three take home tests and gives quizzes at each section. He and his TA's provide office hours everyday of the week. GO TO THEM! THEY ARE EXTREMELY USEFUL FOR THE TAKE HOME TESTS!! He even had additional office hours during week 5 for the last test. He's hilarious too!
This guy is amazing! The sage of AMS. If I could give this guy more than 100 star rating, I would. He takes time out of his free time to help us in Office Hours. Amazing. I have never seen a UCSC Professor done something like that for their students. Very funny and witty too. I would recommend taking him for AMS 131 or any class if you can.
He was very understanding with deadlines and put in a lot of effort to help us succeed. He stays at review sessions until "every question in the room is answered". He's a good lecturer but has messy notes so go to class and pay attention and you should do well. If you don't understand something, he has flexible office hours and good TA's, just ask.
Draper is a very good professor. I suggest you go to his office hours. He basically answers all questions with patience and understanding. Other AMS professors pretty tell you to buzz off if you don't understand things second time around. I wish all professors at UCSC were like him. Good way to end my college career with him as a professor.
This guy is the man!!! Everything good you hear about this man is true. He makes the rest of the faculty members look EMBARRASSINGLY bad. I wish I could take all my classes with the legendary David Draper. Lectures and sections are webcast-ed, but he's so good he'll make you want to wake up at 8AM and go listen to his amazing lectures.
His voice is very monotone which made it hard not to fall asleep and his writing is very messy. The class was hard however the professor would help a lot during office hours and during midterm and finals he would extend his office hours. Also everything is open-book and the class is webcasted.
Take it with Draper. There'll be a wait-list, it'll be crowded, doesn't matter. Wait two years for all it matters, but take it with Draper. You won't regret it.
Take it with Draper. Do not take it with any other professor. This is coming from someone who had to retake AMS 131 prior to taking it with Draper. If you attend lecture and his office hours, I guarantee you will have a B. You'll see why when you attend.
Drapers the best. So glad I took 131 with him. Go to his office hours. He really cares and makes more than enough office hours for students. He even does weekend office hours. For the week prior to a test he has office hours every day. Tests and Quizes are take home. However, the tests take a really long time to get through. Start early.
When I took it we did take home exams and the professor was helpful.
This was my first stats class ever and it could not have been better. I went to every lecture (but they are posted online, as well as the discussions) and despite being confused on some material, the homework and the quizzes were easy to get done, I cannot stress enough about Draper's office hours. Those were the reason why I got a great grade.
Draper's an awesome dude and an even better professor. His handwriting may be nearly illegible in the first few weeks of instruction, but you get used to it. He genuinely cares for his students and takes all of their needs into account. He also practically finished all the assignments, problem by problem, during his office hours. 10 quizzes, 3 test
Draper is amazing. Solid professor. Attend his office hours and he'll go through each problem. Took Draper during quarantine and gave a lot of EC. He had extra office hours like at least 4 days before the exam was due and on the weekends too. Can't imagine a more caring, patient, passionate professor. TAKE HIM, YOU WON'T REGRET IT!
Like everyone has mentioned: ATTEND OFFICE HOURS!!! His class is as easy as everyone says only if you attend his office hours. His handwriting is a little hard to read but honestly, that's my only complaint. Make sure to attend/watch his lectures as well. A real gem.
Professor Draper's class is interesting and you will learn a lot about Statistics & Probability Theory. He is very kind, friendly, and approachable and offers lots of help and answers student's questions about homework and tests. Take him if possible! Excellent Statistics Professor.
Draper's an excellent professor- really cares about his student's success; sometimes even had office hours daily to help students with work. However, beware that this class takes up more of your time than you may plan. Although listed as Tu Th, 1.5 hrs each lecture, it's actually more like Tu Wed Th Fri, 1.5 hrs each- mandatory discussion sections!
Words can't describe how good Professor Draper is. He always makes you feel engaged in lectures and uses real world problems as examples to go over. He had so many extra office hours and sections to where I never felt like I was behind even if I didn't understand something. He really cares about his students and wants you to succeed, TAKE HIM!
I feel bad giving Draper a bad review, because he's a good guy. All quizzes and tests are take-home and Draper walks the class through how to do every single problem during his office hours sessions. There is zero difficulty or incentive to learn, because the answers are right in front of you. Great if you just want an A, bad if you want to learn.
Professor Draper works very hard to help his students out. For the student who gave him a 1 star rating I highly disagree. Attend his OH and he will help walk through the problem while also asking critical questions. He makes himself available many opportunities throughout the course and genuinely cares for his students.
Amazing teacher.
Draper is one of those rare professors who actually earned their tenure. He structures his class so that his students do really well if they put in the work, it's extremely accessible even to people who aren't comfortable with statistics. The only people who don't pass are the people who don't show up - which is a shame, because lectures are great.
Good professor, need some work to get an A
Dr. Draper is a great teacher and anyone with the chance to take one of his courses must. He is very knowledgeable and loves to explore topics from the real world which makes learning enjoyable. If you have any problems with new topics, his office hours are very accessible and he will go through each step of any potential problem you might have.
Professor Draper is undoubtedly the best. His office hours lectures are recorded and he is a very organized man. His TA's are also very helpful. Easily my favorite class at UCSC. He is very clear and straight to the point.
Draper is literally the best professor I've ever encountered. Genuinely cares about each student's understanding and success in the class. Is very accessible outside of class and holds several extra office hours to help us out. Quizzes and exams can be really tough but he helps you with each question and they're all take-home. Take him!
All tests are take-home. Office hours are recorded and he does every problem for you. During summer, he has OH everyday(weekends too). He won't assign problems that aren't covered in his OH. Therefore, if you dont understand anything, class is still very much a gpa booster(easy A+) as long as you watch every OH and put in the work copy everything.
Prof. Draper is one of the best professors at UCSC! His lectures are amazing, likes to read and talk a lot about news events just like me. Entertains the class with his humorous talks, very helpful office hours. Also holds office hours over the weekend and records them, and clarifies any questions or doubts students have. Would highly recommend!!
Professor Draper is, by far, the best instructor I've had so far at this school. It's clear how much he cares about his students, he puts in time and effort into preparing material for lectures and quizzes, and takes into account what the students need. This class is the sole reason behind me being sane this quarter. I learned a lot from him.
Abs. W Prof. As long as you go to his office hours you are guaranteed to succeed. He genuinely cares for his students and wants to make sure that you learn something before you finish his course. Will say that sometimes the HW was exceptionally long or had awkward due dates but since it was his first time teaching this course its understandable.
Draper is the best professor in the stats department. Took him in the 5-week summer session. His office hours are helpful and informative. While he walks you through the problems in his office hours, I suggest you understand the material rather than copy the material. Recommend his stat 131 without a doubt.
Great teacher! Helps you through everything!
Hes the GOAT
Really really nice guy. The class has a lot of take home tests (or at least it did for summer session) but he does like 90% of the exact problems on the tests in his office hours. The 10% that he doesn't are the "Why do you think this makes sense practically" type questions. Very accessible through discord also.
David Draper by far has to be the best professor I have ever had at UCSC. When you attend his lectures, even though they were online, you can tell he cares a lot for the students. Get ready for quizzes, the last test took me roughly 40+ hours to complete, it wasn't to hard! He always helps the students in office hours, so attend to get a good grade
Draper is so passionate about what he teaches and you can tell that he genuinely wants his students to succeed. I took his class during the 5-week summer session and take home tests and quizzes made up the entire grade, but he guided us through it all. Super laid back and funny guy.
By far the best professor I have every had! He did an amazing job at keeping students on track and helping us out through every portion of the course. However, get ready for some extremely log exams, the final exam made up a huge portion of our grade, and it took me roughly 40 hours and almost 70 pages of work. But he helped us a lot with it!
Draper was so sweet and helpful. I took STAT131 for the Summer quarter and he was so generous with help on all the coursework and even extended his office hours past when the quarter ended to provide a helping hand. Always felt sp supported throughout the quarter by his teaching style.
An absolute gem of a professor. Took his STAT131 summer session class and it was a phenomenal experience. Prof Draper explained everything with great detail and his explanations were very approachable. He helps out with the course deliverables a lot during office hours and even goes beyond his office hours times to help everyone understand.
Draper is the best professor I have ever had. He took difficult subjects and made them digestible with lots of real-world examples and well-thought out lectures. I took it as a 5-week summer class, so it was a huge amount of work in a short time, but as long as you attended every lecture and OH and digested the material you could succeed.
Draper is a professor I hold to a different perspective. I've never had a professor who cares about his students and puts commitment to make sure all his students understand the material. I cannot stress this enough, attend the office hours and lectures. This 5-week summer session was a huge workload but it's one of the class I will remember.
This may be one of the most information-dense classes I've ever taken, but Professor Draper is a great and engaging professor. I highly recommend this class to anyone with an interest in ML. Assignments are lengthy yet take-home and you get a few weeks to do them. He gives hints about the problems during his office hours.
Provide 3 extra lectures per week, and office hours every weekday. R.I.P.
I would like to use this place to thank Professor Draper. You were such an inspirational teacher whom I will never forget. You are a role model of educators who care about their students. Again, Thank you, I learned a lot from your class; without you, I wouldn't be who I am now. Don't forget so many of us admired you as the BEST TEACHER. RIP
What a great man, rip draper. With love, forever.
Was an amazing professor and person, RIP Draper.
Was a former student of Draper's, cannot express enough just how much he touched the lives of those of us who had him. He was an amazing mentor, a gem of a person- he'll forever be in our hearts. Thank you, for everything.
