Awesome prof...one of the best I've ever had.
An incredible prof - keeps everything interesting and relevant. Very smart and entertaining.
Very humourous teacher. Not a conventional speaker at all, funny, says whats on his mind, its great. Active lawyer and judge, provides great insight. Not a big fan of how he just calls on people.
One of the best Profs I've had. Speaks truthfully and says what is on his mind while keeping the class interesting. Not hard if you go to lectures and do the readings.

Excellent prof. Teaches relevant information only and keeps it interesting. Exams are open book and easy if you've attended the class. (you can't BS past this guy)
Amazing prof. If you're going to take Private Law, take it with this prof. Greatest class ever.
Took his class in 04...WOW..The Best Prof. I had ever HAD...if you do the readings, for class participation purposes...YOU WILL DO REALLY WELL..drills the content into your head-->attend classes...funny...Judge,Lawyer,Law-School prof..speaks his mind...makes exam q's with your name in it..etc..5/5
finally, a prof that actually teaches law, and does a damn good law. aspiring lawyers this is the class for you. check your bs skills at the door, cause this guy knows law, and thats what you are going to get out of it. not that warm fuzzy socio-legal crap the rest of the law profs at carleton serve
He is perhaps the best law prof at Carleton. Absolutely hilarious, and insanely "quick". There is no point trying to b.s. him, because he will make you look like an ass. If you are thinking about going to law school, take this course so you can figure out if you can cut it.
Private law - Perfect prof. Politically incorrect, up-to-date and actively working in the field of study, funny as hell. Not a class for the faint of heart, or the weak of mind. If you don't want your incompetence pointed out to you, DO THE READINGS. It's that simple. Five stars *****
amazing prof- get in his class if you can!
Very good guy, personally and in class. He'll help you with your own law problems if he can. Sympathetic to both sides (left/right-wing beliefs) and will try to pit the abrasive jocks against the feminists on divorce issues for laughs (and learning). Small claims court judge, practising lawyer. Chooses you to outline readings with no warning.
Very good teacher. Conveys material with enthusiasm and clarity. Very interesting class to attend. However, he calls out on people randomly in class so if you have not done the readings it will be obvious!
He is one of the best prof's i think i have had. He doesnt put up with stupidity, makes me want to be a lawyer - i highly recommend him - keep up in the class and u will do well!! Experienced, awsome professor, judge and lawyer!
Horrible teacher. Subjective and arbitrary marks for participation. Unwilling to meet outside of class at school and unable to produce a breakdown of the final grade. Unable to see how others viewed this man as brilliant or fair
Appreciated his blunt and no nonsense approach however, was not a good professor and should stick to being a judge rather than an educator
arrogant ass are the best words to describe this professor. just because you are a judge doesn't mean your value as a human is higher, or your intelligence at that.
Great prof~ love his lectures and exams are okay - as long as you come to class, you will survive for sure.
Great Professor, socratic method only. Read the cases and you'll be on easy street. Don't and he'll tear you apart in a hilarious way. Very funny and interesting. Great Stories

awesome teacher, makes you get involved in class discussions but very helpfull in the end. make notes!!!
He's a hilarious professor who knows the law better than any other prof I've had. He makes fun of everyone equally so if you get offended it means you have no sense of humor.
hilarious prof, makes you do the readings by picking on people which at the end you will appreciate by getting a very good mark. I did all the readings, came to the classes, laughed my ass off and got an A.
He makes you learn. If you attend class which you will have to if you expect to get any decent grade then you'll do fine. You have to read the cases or when he calls on you-you might look foolish. 20% on participation doesnt send attendence around. thought I failed the midterm ended up with an A.. not out to get you - he teaches the way law should
Prof Dwoskin is incredible! I loved every minute of his course. He is hilarious and such a good prof.
should not teach/ end of discussion
Great prof, he knows the law inside and out. He's not arrogant either (as some people have said), he just expects you to do the readings. If you dont do the readings, or try to BS him, he'll call you out on it. Simple as that. He doesnt think he's better than people, he just expects people to put forth an effort.
Glad he is not a supreme court judge. He would have destroyed so many lives and stepped on so many rights.....
Great Prof! Really engages the class in the learning process and doesn't bore you with lectures because there are none! Basically just a huge class discussion, which is a much more productive way of learning. Make sure to do the readings! You will do fine as long as you go to class, do the readings and participate in class:)
Great teacher, my advice is just to keep up with the readings, You will be questioned on the readings almost every class..huge participation marks
Excellent professor! If you want to go to law school, you need to take his class!
Most I have ever taken away form a class at Carleton so far! Went into this class with no interest in Public law, and now I am thinking of focusing on it! As long as you attend the lectures and do the readings you will walk out with a good mark and a very good understanding of the class material! Take this class!!
amazing prof! speaks his mind which is awesome but politicaly correct types will hate him. socratic method and participation counts for 20% so know your stuff. attendance is mandatory to do well as he adds material not in the text. exams are easy if you take good notes. two exams for 40% and no assignments. got an A and a reference letter sick prof
Like everyone else said, go to class. This is more like a class you'd expect to take in law school and you definitely learn a lot.
Great Prof. Doesn't let you fall asleep in the class,
This man is a joke. He teaches in the same style that he was probably beat around by in law school. Throughout the term, you will learn that he is a medical doctor, architect, engineer, lawyer, scuba diving instructor, judge, and economist. However, David Dwoskin is not a professor. He will pick his favorites ten minutes into the first class.Beware
to be fair, this guy knows his stuff. He does however, pick fav's and will go up rows so each student has provided input. Read the readings so he doesn't have the chance to embarass you. if you simply say you don't know he assumes you didn't read. keep in mind he is a lawyer first. Don't take his picking favs personally, I think he even favours his
This is a fantastic prof and a fantastic class. Pansies will hate this man, but if you can tough out the class you'll learn way more from him than from any other prof. Do the readings, go to class, answer questions, and you're guaranteed an A.
Favorite prof at Carleton. This guy is the funniest yet most interesting professor you'll ever have, DO the readings, GO to class and don't embarrass yourself and you'll find that these 2 hour lectures are very short. If you get the chance take this class with Dwoskin!
As long as you go to class and participate the amount you will learn from this class is amazing. Although this class isn't for those with a weak spine as Mr. Dwoskin tends to speak his mind no matter the subject or politically correctness of it, neither is the law.
He barely knew what he was talking about. Almost every slide he'd be like "I'm not sure what this even means." When he's wrong, (often) he won't admit it and will instead change the subject completely. He lowered our marks so his class didn't look too easy. He gets a lot of the concepts flat-out wrong.
Absolutely amazing prof! Easily my favourite- I will be trying to get into his classes from this year on. Very big stress on participation, and is totally willing to bump your mark up if you do speak up in class. People sensitive about their religion should not take his class though. But if you don't need to be pampered in class, I would def rec
Does a reverse lecture style which is actually very useful for the topics covered in this course! As long as you read most of the assigned cases and readings the class is rewarding.
Absolutely the best professor I've ever had, but definitely not for everyone. If you like the Socratic method, and you can defend your position on the spot you'll love this class. I wish he taught past second year, I miss him so much. Also, Dwoskin's just so dang cool. He's the prototypical lawyer, but in a good way.
Prof Dwoskin is a very good prof. His lectures really do a good job of clarifying everything , however he encourages participation and will call on anyone at any time so it is imperative you do the readings because 20% of you mark is participation. The workload for the class was average but as a professor hes awesome DEFINITELY RECOMMEND HIM!!
Is he smart? Yes. Does he know the material covered in class? Yes. Can he teach well? No. We wasted more time in class trying to get students who obviously had no idea what was going on to answer questions than actually learning. His ego is massive, and his final exam was a little ridiculous. No on cares you wrote a reference letter for Harvard.
I LOVE DAVID he was an amazing lecturer and really knew his stuff. I actually enjoyed showing up to his class because it was really interested. The paper is somewhat tricky but he is not a really difficult marker. The exam is open book so if you take good notes and pay attention in class then it is easy to get a good grade. WOULD RECOMMEND HIM.
He is a polarising professor to say the least. I really liked him, and I know some who don't. Participate in class, and show that you're at least trying to learn, and he'll respect you for it. If you show up to warm a seat for 3 hours, he probably wont give you the benefit of the doubt come exam time. I think he is fair, and a respectable choice.
Is not politically correct but does not pretend to be. Participation was worth 20% of the grade and he teaches socratic method. Speak up in class and do the readings! Impossible to do badly.
Love, love, love this prof!!!! His class is almost entirely discussion based, and you DO have to read the cases beforehand, but if you do do that you'll learn a LOT from his class. If you don't like talking in class, you may want to avoid this prof. Though really, if you don't like talking in front of people you may want to avoid law altogether.
Teaches using the Socratic method. Treats all students like lawyers, isn't afraid to say what's on his mind (mostly hilarious things), and is a judge at the Small Claims Court so definitely knows what he's talking about. Get ready to be picked on. Doesn't know your name? You won't pass. One of the best profs i've had so far.
Great prof , really interesting , funny , Straight forward . If you go to class, youll get an A
I dreaded taking obligations for so long until I finally got to the class and realized how well he teaches such a boring subject! He uses mainly cases to teach the content, doing readings and showing up are a must but it's really not hard with him, this is the first uni class i've actually done all the readings! Funny guy!
Great prof. You have to do the readings and show up but it is worth it. If you do both those things, there is no reason in which you should get an A or B. He's funny and mainly uses cases to teach. If you're unsure about something, ask him and he will help you.
No political correctness here - be prepared to advocate!
Great professor! Really, really knows his stuff. Sit at the front, speak often, and be prepared to get an A in the class. Really loves students who speak a lot. Be prepared to be called on frequently, so know your stuff and do the readings. 20% of your grade is participation - a very, very, very easy 20%. Fantastic prof, would 100% take againreta
Never focused so intensely in a class, purely because his lack of political correctness. He makes it VERY clear, he also doesn't care. Focuses on one student per semester.
At the beginning I thought I would hate this class. He calls out people randomly to read the text and answer questions, but I found this really motivated me to do the readings. He wants the class to do well. He is a fair marker, and for the exam he gives a killer review before so you have everything you need to get an A.
At first, I thought I'd really hate this class as it consisted of reading the textbook and going over it. As many students, don't really read their text books, this man found a way of encouraging his students of doing so; by calling out on random students encouraging participation. Awesome Professor!
10/10 would take again
Great guy! He will call upon students to answer questions every class. He cares about his students a lot and wants everybody to do very well!
Dwoskin is a practicing judge with no filter. If you're looking to get good grades he's a solid choice; not too difficult but not a walk in the park. If you are a student that actually cares you'll get over 85. As a lecturer though, BEST. CLASSES. EVER. Such a relief from the boring left wing profs that flood universities.
Dwoskin was probably the best prof I have ever had. He explains everything so that it is very understandable and always repeats difficult content. Very fair marker, participation is expected. l definitely would recommend his class if you're willing to do the readings and go to class.
TAKE ONE OF HIS COURSES!!! I wish every law professor taught like him. His lectures are extremely interactive and be ready to be called out. If you doing the readings and go to class this class is an easy A
Absolutely incredible; good lecturer, great person, knowledgeable and intelligent. He uses the Socratic method so be sure to at least read a case brief before coming to class, because 20% of your grade is participation in the classroom. I personally loved that he used cases to teach the subject, however; made it easier to understand the concepts.
amazing lecturer, funny and knowledgeable! Always ready to answer questions before, during and after class.
Solid prof. Really funny and since he's an actual judge uses real-life examples of cases he's been a part of. Participation counts for a fair bit, but he calls you out during class so be prepared to talk in class about the readings and the cases. Only one paper and an exam (40% each)
Absolutely wonderful prof. Very interactive lectures. He cares about his students and will spend time after class to help you.
One of the best profs at Carleton. Really funny and engaging. He tries his best to remember all his students names and makes sure everyone passes. 20% of your mark is participation and the 80% is divided between a paper and the final. Open book AND laptop final! Honestly, if you just show up and participate you'll pass.
He is a good prof, there is 20% participation so it is important to try to voluntarily say something almost every class, as well as be prepared when he calls on you. If you get offended easily I would not recommend taking a class with him. Make sure you read the cases, they are the key to success.
Professor Dwoskin is the best professor I've ever had. He's hilarious and his experience adds another layer in the classroom. Make sure you read the cases for class, and show up. You won't regret it. Every class is filled with laughter and I never had any issue with losing interest. I'm sad it's over now, but I am happy that others will have a turn
Worst prof I've had in university. Dwoskin takes pride in being offensive and often makes inappropriate remarks that he plays off as jokes. Half of each class is dedicated to repeating last class word for word, which are taken directly from the textbook making his lectures useless.
Amazing prof. 40% paper, 40% open book/open notes/open laptop final, 20% participation. He's hilarious and engaging and makes every effort to help his students. Had him for 2201 and 2202
He has a 3 hour lecture and splits it into 3 parts, first is to review last week, second is to do the present weeks lecture and the third part is to ask him questions, which means you can leave after 2 hours if you don't have any questions. His court stories are hilarious and he's a great prof!
Listen, i love the guy hes hilarious and is a good spirit to have teach a class. However he is very very old school. NO SLIDES NO CLEAR OUTLINE NO REVIEWS. Hes one of those profs who comes to class and just talks, if you want to pass and succeed you simply have to teach yourself and read the entire textbook. I wouldn't recommend taking him at all,
David is very old school so if you do not go to class you will not be prepared for the exam. He is a great lecturer never bored in his class. but make sure you study the cases and understand what he talks about in class. he gives the answers to the exam in his lectures so pay attention. overall great prof and very knowledgeable.
Go to every class. Know the cases. Avoid questions that are unrelated to course material or he will go off for 20 minutes talking about things that, while interesting, are unimportant towards grading. Stand out, he remembers his Star students. These will the people he mentions in the questions in his exams. Be that person.
Brilliant professor, very engaging and very encouraging.
Prof. Dwoskin is a very caring and knowledgable prof. His methods of teaching his students are honestly the best. Make sure you read the textbook before class, because participation 20%. His midterm and exam were take-home and open book so he gives you a lot of chances to do well in his class. plus, he gives an in depth exam review to help.
David Dwoskin is a great professor. He will give you a real sense of what to expect if you're looking for a career in law. He is incredibly kind to his students. Make sure you do the assigned readings because he calls on people in class. Very engaging and forces you to stay on top of your work. Go to class, do the readings and you will do well!
Professor Dwoskin is an amazing professor if you are a star student, if you aren't he pays no attention to you. His class is very interactive which is a great way of teaching, but he only ever calls on his star/favourite students.
I wasnt looking forward to this class but having Dwoskin as a prof made the difference. Textbook is needed for cases (they take up the main discussion in class). Lectures are usually an open discussion which was extremely helpful. Very understanding prof - didnt dock any late marks on overdue assignments. I would 100% take the class again.
Prof. Dwoskin has a distinct style of teaching that involves a lot of class participation and discussion. I found the lectures to be confusing due because concepts were not always delivered with clarity.
Good teacher that marks fairly. He values participation and tends to favour students who interact more. The textbook is required, but you can get by without it and still participate in discussions. I would take this class again the exam is exactly what he says it will be, and there are no surprises. Prof/TAs are available to help. Highly recommend.
Amazing prof! if you plan to attend law school, I highly recommend David! He does use the cold calling method and at first, I found this to be very nerve-racking, but later became comfortable with it, I truly believe I understood the most information in this class due to his teaching. He is also a great lecturer and very enjoyable to learn from!
Old school professor that's lecture heavy, no online savvyness at all, doesn't use brightspace, the board or slides. I don't recommend if you're shy, and I warn if you're a woman he's friendly and abrasive, that's coming from a man. He only grades on 2-3 things which aren't well detailed nor well graded. His lectures are tangeants and what-ifs.
amazing prof. incredibly knowledge, and also extremely fair and kind to his students. you have to do the case readings and attend class to really grasp the material, but prof makes every lecture entertaining and very engaging.
The lectures were always engaging- 1 hour of review and 1 hour of new content every lecture. It was great! He would do cold calling, by going down the attendance sheet, but if you talked to him about it, he would not call on you during class (that's what I did).
For his faults, Prof. Dwoskin's class is incredibly engaging. Class is set up similar to law school, cold calling and basically just case readings. 20% participation, but it can only boost your grade. Class barely ever runs by 2 hours. He does seem to care about students and will give references for law school if you talk and get an A or higher.
David is AWESOME! He uses the cold call method but it is not nerve wracking as he uses the attendance to call on you, so you will know when your name is coming up. He cares about his students, he is very inspirational and knows what he is talking about. He is SO NICE and his midterm assignment and final exam was easy because he taught well!
Amazing prof. Super knowledgeable and also very understanding with students. You need to go to class to do well, but its so worth it, hes an great prof.
Professor Dwoskin is an incredible instructor. He constantly uplifts his students, never allows anyone to be lost in his class, is very approachable, and gives insightful lectures. He is a cold caller tho! make sure to thoroughly read all cases being discussed that week if you're going to class so you don't get academically humbled.
