Great teacher - makes it fun to learn about art - participation is key
Very enthusiastic teacher-a lot of memorization though!
go to class, take notes, and memorize the stuff and ull be average
very enthusiatic and class isn't hard.
super enthusiastic dude... class isn't too hard, take notes, reading not neccesary
Doesnt expect expert perfection, hard topic, but he teaches it well
A truly great teacher... messed up sense of humor but you learn so much, hes gr8
Fun class, funny professor. Good teaching style. Lots of small papers though
too hard! would be a great if youre an art major, if youre not, stay away!
he is enthusiastic, but there's TONS of memorization... more for art majors...
Very enthusiastic. Memorization is easy if done in moderation and not all at once. 6 or 7 short one page papers, then 2 longer 5-7page papers, but not too bad. I found this class very enjoyable. recommeneded.
Wonderful passion and love of field and subject matter. Caring for those who show true desire to learn. Helpful as helpful gets. Extremely intellegent man! To do well, one needs to be a strong intellegent student. For serious students only!!
He is very hot and a nice guy, class is difficult if you don't know anything about art.
i just took the class for gen ed., but this guy thought i was an art major or something...needs to chill out with the memorization
whatever he teaches you general knowledge to make you a well rounded person - he doesnt teach like youre an art major. other art hist teachers are so much harder and BORING. take him. make yourself a better person.
This guy at first came off like a hard teacher, very articulate and detailed in his lecturing. A lot of memorization, but YOU WILL LEARN THE MATERIAL. Best for art majors like myself, but take it if need for gened, he is pretty good. Papers tests, fair
Great professor! I learned more from his class than the rest of the semester combined. Lots of memorization, but well worthwhile. Fun lecture
took his other classes aswell... have learned the most from him out of the ARTH program instructors. Expects you to thinkon your own and have opinions. Very fair and clear at the same time. 2 thumbs up
knows his stuff, expects you to be able to think and write clearly. Prefers clarity and concise writing, can see BS right away in papers. Keep up on the memorization, and pay attention during lectures, gives you all needed info.
This guy's assignments and tests are as hard as he is g**, such a typical artsy person it can be commical.
very different approach to the class, makes it fun to stay awake in the dark. Not once was I bored. Funny, happy, very helpful guy. A bit of work on projects/debates/test, but no homework other than to study as much as possible. you can get an A if youtry
Nice guy...very well- educated...a little **** at times, but it is an art class, that's what you can expect...cool as hell.
He is completely disorganized... unavailable during office hours and late even though he asks students to be early. His tests are manageable, but he's very unhelpful.
hes kind of weird but a nice guy. He is really smart and wants students to use there brain when it comes to understanding art. LOTS of extra assinments but an enjoyable class
Really nice guy, knows a lot about art. Randomly calls on you in class so pay attention!! His tests challenge you to think about art.
awesome, nice, funny guy. keeps you awake, he's not boring at all, he really knows what he's talking about and you learn alot in his class...easily. i recommend him .
This guy is amazing. SOooo nice and helpful, always answers questions and is available to help. His class is a bit hard and attending the lectures is a MUST, but time goes by fast and its not boring. DEFINATELY TAKE HIM!
if you work hard and do what he says, this class is easy and it can even be interesting! sometimes, it's boring and hard to stay awake, but for the most part, he makes everyone participate and the discussions are intriguing.
this man is weird....he doesnt know much about the art pieces he just goes with what the students say. Avoid taking this class... definetly the worst class ive taken at jmu
Ehrenpreis may be artsy but he certainly isn't g**. I know this for a fact. Anyway, he is a brilliant man, eccentric as hell but all the brilliant ones are. You'll learn alot and have fun too.
He's definitely my favorite art history teacher! I took garth 206, and art 460 from him. There's alot of work involved, but he's awesome.
Discussion-based lectures go over a handful of slides per class, much more interesting than other GARTH class I took because of that. Seems to know so much about the subject, and easy to approach if there's problems/?s. Must follow his directions on papers, otherwise will grade down.
you will actually learn a lot in this class if you pay attention. 6- one page papers and 2 5 pg papers due. makes effort to learn students' names.ur grade will be based on how well you write term papers and memorize slides.
I hated this class, wanted to fall asleep in it everday and it was a 2 o'clock class. He doesn't teach much but rather relies on students comments instead. A real jerk when you go to ask for help. The test and papers are easy but he's just not a nice person
very nice and funny! knows what he's talking about. easy as long as you do the work and study for the tests.. i never read the book but went to all the classes and ended w/a B.
as an advisor he knows nothing. he had to ask kay everything. he's good at learning names and calls on people randomly, so pay attention. overall, very difficult, don't take his class unless you really really want to learn about the subject. don't take for 206, take george.
Run far away from this class! I hated this class with a passion, his tests are uber hard... you memorize 60 some slides and then he uses like 8. 6 one-page papers are a pain, two big papers which are no fun. And he calls on people randomly, is unclear in his assignments. don't take this class!!
The class wasn't difficult but I but i hated it his lectures are all over the place. He thinks it's funny to post really big assignments online the day before they're due. He comes in late and compensates by keeping you late. not the worst lecturer i've ever had but he's such a jerk.
He seems like he may be kind of a jerk to the whole class, but if you talk to him individually he is a nice guy and is very understanding. The class isnt hard it is just time consuming. 6 one page papers are easy and the test are easy too. He seems like he is a hard grader but isnt to bad.
Very cool guy. Knows his stuff. You will learn a TON in this class if you're at all interested. Randomly takes attendance, but you should go anyway- lectures really help you understand the material. Makes you talk in class, but it's not bad. Considers everyone's opinion. Very fair.I reccommend him.
Great professor but he does call on everyone so make sure you're ready. 300 was a difficult class but since art history majors have to take it anyways I would recommend him. Overall challenging but good.
Lots of work. Many one page papers and two large papers. Interesting lectures, but be warned - he calls on everyone. Really nice guy.
Plays favorites, big time. He decides in the first week or so whether he likes you or not and thats that. I worked hard and got decent grades, but he is standoffish and unwilling to help some and will do anything to help others. My roommate and I got the same exact test scores all semester; I got a C, she got a B.
It's been 3 years since I took his class and he still remains the worst teacher I've ever had. He's exceptionally unfair, rude, and arrogant. He didn't like me whatsoever but I walked away with an A because he couldn't deny that I had the subject matter down pat. Take Arthur under any condition... she's lightyears beyond him.
Dr. E has a lot of zeal and really tries to get you to construct your own ideas, not rely on textbooks. The raedings can sometimes be difficult but take part in discussions anyway, they can turn out to be really intersting and theory based. His classes are a good bit of work, but he's one of those professors who you either love nd want to be an art history major or not.
just one word: RUN.
DE is great! His lectures have taught me so much about art, and I am surprised about how applicable it is to real life. My fave class this semester! Nice guy, learns names FAST! Papers can be tough, but not impossible. Go to class so you know whats going on. A little disorganized at times, but overall GREAT PROF. Take.

EXTREMELY interesting class, great teaching style. Lecture/discussion type format. Structured in a manner that the material he presents becomes extremely intriguing. Downside is organization and grading. His format makes no freaking sense! Be extremely weary of paper length, and be sure to know the rules of a paper before writing.
arrogant, but because he has a right to be. you will love him, you will hate him, in the end you will come out better for it all. take this class with him. its not so bad after all. i'm still taking from what i learned
This guys is incredibly smart in the field of art. im still grasping all of the things i learned from his class and couldnt be happier about what i now know about art. the class was very interesting and there isnt an attendance policy but its a good idea to go. i recommend you take this class with him but be prepared to write a lot of papers
Really good guy, decent amount of work but the class ends up being pretty easy. Tries to make things as interesting as possible, lots of discussions.
AWESOME guy, strange sense of humor (but hilarious nevertheless). Penchant for bringing about change aroud campus. Very intelligent, loves to have involved discussions in class. Personally, I love a good discussion, so if you like participating in class and learning something, take him! Oh, and good taste in music. ;)
This guy is the smartest Professor, so knowledgeable about his field, there are lots of short essays to write, you must participate in class discussions, but he makes it seem like SO much fun. I can't tell you how much I've learned in this one semester. Take this clas!!!!! And if you get the chance go to his office and talk to him hes very helpful.
Lots of short essays, tests not too hard, out there personality, pretty flamboyant at times, but overall a good teacher. Hate art, and thought pretty much every class was boring, but not too hard to get an A, and you'll probably like the class if you're into art.
Very passionate and energetic professor-very motivating and intelligent, knowledgeable in the field. Class is manageable with readings and one page essays every other week or so, one major paper, and two major tests. You'll do well if you just go to class and take notes. I hardly needed the book. Take him!
this was the best art history class i have yet to take. every class was a pleasure and i learned so much from this man. he is kind and pushes you to understand as much as possible. take class with him, hes a great teacher and person.
awful
Very energetic guy and clearly knows his stuff. Will always talk after class if you're confused. One-page essays every few weeks, a midterm/final (on slides) and one bigger paper at the end. Pretty easy class. You don't really HAVE to do the reading but it helps with contributing during discussions. I recommend him if you're taking GARTH206!!
Took class for gen-ed. Alot of work to memorize slides for midterm & final. I had NO prior knowledge in the art/art history field. I was expecting to get a lot more direction. He calls on people when they don't want to talk & puts you down if you don't know the "right" answer. 6 Short papers & HARD final paper where you have to go to art museum.
I took this class as an elective and was pretty disappointed. I love art hist but found his teaching incredibly boring and he grades his essays (and there are a lot of them) too difficultly. You have to go to an art museum to write your final paper (so have a car or a ride). Go to class- he takes attendance fairly regularly. Overall not a fan.
Professor Ehrenpreis is without a doubt the best professor I've had thus far. He's extremely smart, loves answering your questions and he's so easy to approach! You will learn so much and have the greatest time in any of his classes. He's a tough grader and it's tough material, but so worth it. Take, take, take!
The BEST professor in the art history department. He will challenge you and ask a lot of you, but he is there for you 100% of the way..you just have to ask for support! People who gave bad ratings were clearly just taking his class to fulfill gen-eds and were too lazy to try to approach him.
This class isn't too difficult, class is mandatory, 5 one page papers, a research paper, a mid-term, and non cumulative final. Very helpful and accommodating if you visit his office hours. He gets really excited if you participate in class. Easy subject matter and discussion based lecture. Never read the textbook and will probably get an A.
This teacher is very kind and willing to help you but he is an EXTREMELY harsh grader. It is almost impossible to do well on any of the papers and he expects so much out of students. Great guy but too harsh of a class to take especially considering that it is a GenEd class. Tests seem somewhat easy and straight to the point but his grades are not.
I would recommend Dr. Ehrenpreis, class can get a little boring and he get's caught up in rants but you will learn a lot and the class is not un-necessarily difficult like some Gen eds. Class discussion is important and if you need help with something he will do his best. With moderate effort it's an easy B.
He is super funny and really nice and tries to help, he's just a harsh grader. I never saw anyone get above a B+ on a paper, midterm, final, anything. A lot of work for a gen Ed, like ALOT. not horrible, but I wouldn't reccomend.
I would definitely take him again. I was not interested in art at all and he changed my mind towards art. You can tell he clearly cares a lot about what he teaches and is very passionate about art. For the two exams, you have to memorize quite a bit of info but nothing too difficult. Being active in class is very important.
He is really funny but his lectures are kind of boring. He is nice and willing to help. WAY better than the other art history professors and a LOT easier! You only need to listen in class and take good notes. Midterm isn't too bad and there is not much homework.
Lectures can drag, but he is always passionate about what he teaches. Only 2 exams (midterm & final) which are all written blue book. About 5 one-paper essay and a term paper. Has short quizzes online. I would say attendance really matters for this class, b/c everything he says in class is relevant to the tests. Don't buy the book.
honestly the worst class and professor avoid at all costs. he acts like everyone in the class loves art and you will struggle severely if you do not. midterm and final are extremely difficult. essay is extremely unnecessary and time consuming. one page papers are graded very harshly. don't ever take this class or this professor
I took this class for my GenEd requirement and I thought it was pretty difficult. There are 5 one-page papers which he grades very harshly. I've gone to see him several times in his office hours and he was extremely helpful and helped me become a better writer. Need to participate in class and show up, and you will need to put in a lot of effort.
Ehrenpreis is passionate about his subject and it shows. His lectures are phenomenal; he truly makes an effort to engage his students. I found the exams difficult, but as long as you keep up with the reading and invest time in studying, you should be fine.
Get ready to write! there are lots of short papers throughout the semester but he really makes an effort to better your writing. my grades on them started at B-'s and ended the semester getting As on the last few papers. very detail heavy with th material so it would help if you have an interest in art.
There are 5 one page papers on 20 page readings that are difficult, 1 visual analysis on the most obscure thing, and 1 long paper at the end of the semester due right before finals. 2 tests- midterm and final. He is super sarcastic and very passionate but too much work for a gen ed, especially if you are not interested in this at all. take music
Professor Ehrenphreis is an awesome lecturer. He really makes you think and understand how art was designed. There is a textbook but I never opened it other than to look up vocab definitions.
I absolutely cannot recommend Professor Ehrenpreis enough. For a gened credit, yes, this is a fair amount of work; however, if you want to take a class that is easy to engage in with a professor who clearly loves what he does, take this class. I learned so much about monuments and culture and I definitely have a new perspective on art. Phenomenal!
Great teacher, even better person! Had him online due to Covid and he was great. Attendance wasn't mandatory but was very crucial to pass. No textbook, and as long as you pay attention you will have no issues. He does ask everyone to keep their camera on and calls on students during class to speak.
For an art history gen ed Ehrenpreis makes it unbelievably harder than any other professor. He cares about how you do in the class but doesnt give feedback. Tests are compromised of essays meanwhile other art history classes are all multiple choice. He doesnt understand not everybody is an ARTH major. Nice guy but id avoid him
Hes a nice guy, he just acts as if everyone in the class is an art history major. He will call on you randomly in class to participate. Homework just consists of watching videos and reading articles on canvas before class. The grades are primarily from essays, along with a mid term and final that are both essay style.
Dr. David is a very knowledgeable professor and can learn a lot in his classes. As an English learner, the reading part of this lesson is a bit difficult. But Dr. David helped a lot. He is a very kind person. If you are interested in architecture and art, I suggest you attend this class. It's really interesting.
Prof Ehrenphresis is passionate about his subject! If you don't care about monuments going into this class, you will when you leave. Every class period seemed to last 15 minutes because the conversation was just that interesting. He will sometimes ask a question on the reading, so make sure you read it thoroughly. One of the best profs I've ever!
He doesn't allow computers which makes note taking 10x more difficult,His test show a picture of a painting on the screen and even if you know exactly everything about the picture including (which you need to know) The exact date time frame, location, artists, type of painting you can still fail the test. Which I did and I memorized every inch.
My favorite professor I've had yet. He is very passionate about the topics he discusses and wants you to be too. He influenced me to become an art history major. His lecture style is different from most classes, it is primarily discussion based and based on your observations and opinions which is super helpful for the material you need to know.
Prof. E is one of the few professors at JMU who truly cares. He is extremely understanding and set clear class expectations. If you keep up with the readings, assignments, and actually study, you'll do well. The class is structured more like a group discussion rather than a lecture. A few essays throughout the semester, but they are manageable.
He liked to put my work up on the screen to be judged by him and the entire class. Talked about politics for most of the class (this isn't a politics class). Liked to ramble. I hated going to his class but I had to because we had random graded questions. Had at least one paper a week. Wish I never took the class. Worst professor I've ever had.
