Astronomy- The guy LOVES outer space and tries his damnedest to get you to feel the same. Go to the star parties. They're suprisingly fun!
Mr. Falk is a very good professor. He enjoys teaching his class. Just go to class and read the book. Also, go to the star parties, you'll be surprised of the things you will learn.
I love Mr. Falk! He makes learning complicated material fun. He's always willing to help and his jokes are the best.
Gives extra credit. The exams are fair, but do prepare and answer the study guide questions!
very nice and easy class for me...teacher helps make thigs clear if you are ready to take on the subject....make sure you kep up with the work though its not a class whose lectures you can miss and still get a good grade
One of my favorite professors ever! If you can keep up with the book, take good notes, and care about your grade, you'll do just fine. Go to the star parties, and participate in the extra credit. You'll learn a whole lot.
"Kip" is a down to earth dude. His jokes are astronomicaly funny. Not! And you will be spaced out while he lights up the planisphere.
Mr Faulk is wonderful! He provides real lectures, challenging but fair assignments/tests, and insures that you know the material. It was easy to learn in his class...watch out though, sometimes he goes off on a tangent.
Dr. Falk is the coolest science teacher I have ever had. I hate science and I got a good grade in his class. Teaches clearly, offers plenty of extra-credit, loves his students. Ask any question you like about our universe. Must take for science GE.
Very clear about the course. Got a "B" and i haven't even read the book. What he goes over during the class is enough to get a good grade in the class
His class is straight-forward and interesting. There are plenty of opportunities for extra credit. READ THE CHAPTER SUMMARIES IN THE BOOK and then skim the chapter you can't miss. One of the most dedicated teachers I've ever had.
Very clear, open, and funny. Open to input, questions, and comments during lectures. The book is only necessary for the chapter summaries. The tests are based solely on his lectures. Attendance is a must.
goood
His Astronomy 1 class was interesting. It was a fun class especially the star parties. But, you can't miss any of his lectures.
Mr. Falk teaches this class with great enthusiasm. He definitely loves the material, and it shows. He cares a great deal about his students and there is also tutoring, which is awesome. His jokes are so bad, the worst, to the point that it's funny.
awesome teacher..needs to catch up with modern lingo and research what makes a joke funny but he is easily the most organised proofessors i have seen All his material is clearly laid out...attendance is all you need to get a minimunm B.i only lost like 10 points total in all his tests combined..easy
Great teacher! Makes funny cheesy jokes, but it helps you remember the material. The study guide he gives are really helpful for the tests he gives. And there's extra credit.
Amazing teacher. Not only is he fun, but he's very clear, and fully explains all the concepts presented. Regardless of what people say, his jokes are funny (the first few times at least). He's very fair and offers extra credit. Show up and take good notes and you'll get a good grade. Take him!!!
What a great teacher! he can really teach and explain complex concepts very well so you can understand. He also makes it intresting and helps students engade in the class more. he is very caring and cares about his students. His tests are based on his lectures and are hard, but you can do it
Mr.Falk is a very good teacher. He does a very fine job in teaching and is very clear and makes it easy to understand very difficult concepts. He is also very kind and cares about his students. Highy recommend him.
mr falk is a really great teacher! highly recommend him! just take good notes and know the study guide! (everything on the test is in the notes + studyguide!)i never thought i would like astonomy until i took this class! A is easily obtailable with effort! :)
Basically what everyone already said. very good teacher! i never thought i would be interested in astronomy until i took him, he makes difficult ideas very easy to understand and puts it in very simple terms, you might not even need the book if you take good notes, i didn't even read mine at all.
Good class, you have to do the work and study to pass, but has very detailed and helpful study guides. Corny jokes, makes class a little intresting and more fun. But overall wierd, trekkie sorta guy. But nice if you're nice to him.
Jokes so bad they swing way around the specturm and become good in a strange way. Extremely interesting lectures. He's a great guy and a great instructor. His SI is a sweety and really smart too, so if you miss class, see her. Never opened the book his lectures were so good.
I have always been interested in Astronomy, but after taking his astronomy 1 class, i was left with this new and improved love for it.He is by far the best science teacher i have ever had and certainly the best *TEACHER* overall. He made it interesting and fun to learn about astronomy. He has passion for it, and this is what kept me going, and of
Difficult material but Professor Falk is incredibly good at making it seem simple. Take detailed notes -- the book is complicated but his lectures aren't. Everything on the test is in his lectures. If you don't go to class everyday you will miss out on lectures and in class assignments that can't be made up, so good attendance is a must.
I struggled a bit with the book and understanding some of the concepts, but he's one of the best teachers ever and his jokes REALLY are bad but it make the class more fun. If you are having trouble passing the test , his SI eyelene she's awesome and she's very helpful. She guarantees you the A
if youre not interested in astronomy, its a struggle to stay awake in his classes...but its a lot better than taking chemistry!
Great prof he not only exemplifies astro physically but he truly is the poster child for teaching the subject. Astro is somewhat difficult, he is trying to explain space (he he inside joke) so attending the SI metg. are very beneficial! There was a girl in my class who barely spoke English yet she attended every SI metg religiously and got in A.
Falk is an awsome teacher! im not big on science classes! soo i decided to take this one and wow! i learned alot! its a easy class! he gives you studyguides for the test! and there is alot of extra credit! it was fun! ok his jokes could use some work but their not that bad! Take class if you want a A
Absolutely the best teacher at Valley college. Even though science is not my thing, i loved his class, his energy makes your excited about the topic too. I can't praise him enough, a wonderful, intelligent, and caring man. he cares about his students and wants you to learn. I recommend to all.
BEST PROFESSOR @ LAVC. His teaching style makes the class enjoyable. If you want an "A", go 2 class everyday & study from his study guides. The class is very interesting. I learned a lot. He truly cares about his students & whether or not they are really learning anything from his lectures. He is very dedicated and will help you in any way he can.
hard to understand the tests are even harder to understand hard to stay awake and his jokes are horrible
^Oh give me a break^! He's terrific! His jokes are so bad they go all the way around the spectrum and back to funny! If you need a science, this is the class, and the professor, to take it with! Pretty light subject material, no math. I didn't open the book once, his lectures are so clear. His TA is adorable, smart, and rounds out a great class!
Falk, is a very nice and funny teacher. His jokes are sometimes funny to. His tests are not that hard. He gives x-tra credit also. He is a great teacher , take him you wont be dissappointed.
I sooo loved this class. Falk is awesome. Funny, interesting, always made us laugh. He cares a lot. You'll love the subject. Take really good notes, ask if you have questions, do your best, and you'll get an A. Best class I've taken so far. Take it, and enjoy it.
No matter what take this class its an A for sure and you actually will learn whether you want to or not, hes that good. He one of those that will learn your name and answer your questions without making you walk him to his car. Best teacher at Valley!
great prof!!!! looking forward to his lab(astro 5)this fall...he's a rockin' guy, totally loved his intro class...hell of a guy...and one of the greatest educators ever! and a big f! off to the folks who didn't pay attention, you guys missed out big time!
I love Mr. Falk. He's nice & funny & has this loveable, dorky quality to him. I've never been interested in science, but he made the topic very interesting, & what's better is that I actually understood what he was saying! As long as you take notes & go to class, you should be able to answer the study guide questions easily. I got an A.
The jokes dont't get any better...lol
Really nice guy. Very enthusiastic about the subject. Lab class is very simple, with chances for extra credit. Just humor him and you'll be fine.
I don't think I have ever been more bored in a class! He is drone, makes annoying corny jokes and just rambles. He works on a point system and makes it difficult to do well. I would not reccomend this class for anyone.
Professor Falk is one of the collest teachers I had at LAVC. He is very nice and very helpfull. If you have an interest in astronomy, take him. He is an easy going teacher and very friendly when you need help.
If you enjoyed his Astro 1 class, you'll enjoy this class as well. The idea of working with a telescope worth thousands seems daunting at first but you work in groups so between the four of you, and the help willingly given by Prof. Falk, it's easier than you might think. Assignments are simplistic and tests are easy. He is a wonderful teacher!
Anyone who is slandering professor Falk as poor teacher, is completely lazy. Professor Falk is amazing! He gives study guides and allows extra credit. He is fair and gives back the test very promptly. You have to do the reading and study but it's not brain surgery. True he many have corny jokes but a the very least he's entertaining.
A second semester he proved me teaching is his passion. His class is interesting, as well as his personality. A GREAT teacher. Absolutely take his class. He explains everything in detail, and make you love the material.
Prof. Falk class opened a new intrest in a subject that I was only taking for credit. This class makes you realize how small we really are in this universe. You do have to work for you grade, but he is always willing to answer any questions.
Corny and kooky teacher. Took him over Summer and he was great. Take notes and just study the material. Easy quizzes and tests.
he is really hard and don't explains well. I would suggest to anyone that is looking to take astronomy to take someone else other then him. His astronomy 1 comes with si session, that should tell you already how hard that class will be if school providing free after class tutor
All 5/5 ratings, of course he's a great teacher. THE BEST! But look at the rating below this one. What do you think about this rater compared to the others? NOT COLLEGE MATERIAL!! He/she has a HUGE PROBLEM! Actually, any "BAD" ratings for this teacher should be DELETED and the raters should be arrested for SLANDER! LIBEL! See you in court...
I took his class over the summer. He doesn't explain the material clearly. He's a difficult grader. He will give you a bad grade regardless of your efforts. I would suggest taking this course with someone else.
He is OK but he is not reasonable teacher. On 5weeks class in summer session he finished the entire book, which is 18 chapters. Who would do such a thing? As a result, most of the students received lower grade. This teacher takes his head out of the cloud. After all is just a class is not like we want to be an astronomer or a scientist. Wake u
I agree, 18 chapters for summer session of only 5 weeks. I took his class. no fun. he is a hard teacher for no reasons at all. he just like it that way. don't take his class he is hard in grading. no matter how hard you work, still you get a C.
this teacher is un-touched w/reality. he is very hard which for the subject he teaches doesn't make any sense. He teaches 18 chpts in 5wks-go figure what type of a teacher is he! no matter how hare you work-still get a "C"-like me.
very clear. don't miss class, or else your missing something important. really kind guy who is willing to help at all times, but his tests are tricky. however, he will tell you about tutoring sessions. GO TO THEM!!!!!!!! even if its a day before the test. trust me and GO!!!!!!!! you will not regret it. overall, a recommended teacher.
very hard teacher-don't recommend him. no matter how hard you workd-yet, you get a "C".
super easy if you have a spacial understanding how havenly bodies interact. I only list like 3 points the entire semister. He is a good astronomy professor. Those who don't have any understanding of any astronomy may as well not take him since the course content requires some background.
Prof. Faulk made the material doable in a 5 week period. Summer Sessions are supposed to be accelerated, so don't take them if you are too poor a student to do 15 weeks worth of work in 5. Nice guy who tells jokes so bad that they are funny.
I already had a great interest in astronomy which has made the course easy for me. Falk is thorough and easy to understand and likes to answer questions - a big plus in my book. The lectures follow the book and the material he covers is what is on the test. No surprises, though personally, I found the tests way to easy.
Best teacher!enthusiastic and cares about his students.
Professor Falk is a great teacher, hands down. He follows a very linear order of teaching that makes the material very clear and as long as you show up for class, get notes and actually go over them a little bit, you should do great. His jokes are so terrible that you HAVE to laugh. I loved taking his class and plan on taking more from him.
the best teacher at valley. he's passionate about his work and take the time to explain. i got a "b" in his class. he made the subject interesting. will take him again for the astro lab.
He is the best teacher! I took him awhile back but have been telling everyone about it. Very helpful. Class is fun. There is no way you can not pass this class. Read your book, listen and have FUN!
Let me just say that Professor Falk was the BEST teacher that I ever had and ever will. He is facinated himself about the everchanging subject of astronomy and it really shows when he is up there teaching. He provides plenty of information in an easy to understand format and will gladly go over any materil that you do not understand.
Falk is the man!!!
Professor Falk is a good teacher and he enjoys teaching. You must come to class and take notes to get a good grade and read the textbook! He gives a study guide at least a week before each exam so you will have a good idea what is on the test. If you do your work and the extra credit and participate in class, you will do well.
Not a good teacher. He gives u handouts to turn in and then dosen't give it back to see what grade u got. Gives quizzes and test. Not even with extra credit can u pass the class. I had to droop it before i would fail the class.
VERY GOOD TEACHER, SUBJECT MATTER WAS HARD AND ATTENTION AND NOTES IN CLASS ARE MANDATORY. MADE ASTRONOMY INTERESTING AND I LEARNED MORE THAN I THOUGHT I WOULD
MUST ATTEND CLASS! I never used the text because his quizes and tests are all taken from his notes. Take good notes and study the study guide and you should be ok. The class is interesting but it is a challenge.
Mr. Falk is a great teacher. The concepts and terms are pretty "out of this world", but he brings it back to earth and makes it easy to grasp. I would definitely recommend him (and I have!)
I love this teacher, he explains everything clearly and most of his tests are derived from his lecture notes. Textbook is used but not very often to prepair for test. Overall great teacher!!
Gives you study guides that don't help at all. Studied and answered them all correctly according to his notes, and still received a high D. Boring lectures that will make you sleep. Only had one homework. Read the book, but still had to withdraw before I get an F or D.
This was a good class however if was hard to follow at times. The teacher is nice but the lectures are a little boring. I studied all his study guides and read the notes but i still received a C. You really dont need the book because you dont take it to class and the material in the book is a bit complicated. Class was ok.
Very good Professor. I took a 5 week session in summer and it was fast paced, but VERY interesting. He makes the class enjoyable and even fun. All you need to do is study the study guide throughly and pay attention. Tests aren't too hard, and he gives you a lot of time to do them. I still got an A, even with out his many chances for extra credit.
Takes a subject that could be really dry and boring, lightens it up with corny jokes. He REALLY cares about students. Will go above and beyond if you need help. Take good notes and you will be fine. Every question on the test is directly from clear points in his lectures. Never read the book and got a high B just from note taking on his lectures.
i loved this teacher. hes the best. if you're intrested in science or even if you're not you will be after this class. he doen't really teach from the book and he hands out a study befor the test. He gives you a lot of time to do the one hw assignment. hes very knowledgable and his class is very interesting.
Falk is one of the best teachers I've had in my six years of college. He is inspiring. His explanations are clear and his expectations are reasonable. He also has an excellent sense of humor.
GREAT teacher. He makes you love Astronomy. I enjoyed this class a lot and still got an A. Great sense of humor and extremely good at simplifying a very hard to understand concept. Take it, you won't regret it!!!
He give u studies guide but there not heplfull for the test. Class very boring gives u alot of handouts n dosen't return them. Test are hard even if u take good notes in his class, read the book n do the studie guides. not helpfull at all, take some other scince class. By the time i dropped there were very few students left in calss.
His study giude won't help you, if you wanna know what is on the test that is not in the guide. if you love astronomy take it, if no forget it or you will get C.
his class its not easy !!! Prepare to read alot and study for his tests. YOU NEED TO BE IN CLASS every time and pay attention in order to pass the tests which are not super hard but not easy as well. If you suck up to him he might like you . I COULDNT stand his class because he's jokes are corny. Overall he is cool but just kinda annoying ;)
Mr. Falk is a wonderful teacher. He loves astronomy more than anything and it shows. Don't take this class if you don't have an interest in astronomy or are willing to put effort into studying, you will not pass. The class is easy if you study and have a positive attitude. Mr. Falk really appreciates participation in class.
The BEST teacher at LAVC. He makes Astronomy a lot of fun to learn. He is funny and nice, unless you disrupt the class. The key to this class is taking notes during lecture. Every question is based off things he says directly in class. One tip: If you are good at taking notes, then dont buy the book. I never used it and regret spending money on it.
Worst teacher I have ever had, he isn't clear when explaining the subject. Very boring.
Good class if you like astronomy, just study and laugh at his jokes and you'll be ok. Don't forget your study material or you will be FALKED!! Overall he's a good professor.
Easy class. Everything he teaches in lecture is on the test. I never had to use the book. Study the notes and you will do fine.
Best professor ever! He made the class fun and interesting! I would love to take another class from him sometime. He knows his stuff and is VERY helpful.
So far he has been the best teacher I've had at Valley. He makes the class interesting and not to mention his jokes ( i find them funny). There were some extra credit activities such as star parties. Lectures are very interesting, take lots of notes and pay attention. Have fun!!!
If a rocket explodes in space does it make a noise? Ask Falk! Nice, funny teacher who made a difficult but fascinating subject easy to understand. Don't miss class! Lectures are key to the exams; take thorough notes & read the textbook for add'l info. If you have questions ask him: he is helpful. Gives study guides & multiple choice exams.
I truly learned a great deal about astronomy. It's a difficult class but amazingly interesting. You HAVE to attend every class , take good notes, READ the text, and participate. Mr.Falk is an amazing teacher one of the best! He truly cares and usually has super corny jokes that always put a smile on your face.
He was a SPECTACULAR teacher in the summer. He is exciting, ORIGINAL, and his sense of humor is out of the world! Don't mess with his style by being constantly late. He takes the tests DEAD SERIOUSLY! be there on time, don't miss a class, be awake, take good notes, study well and PAY ATTENTION!!! THIS IS CRITICAL! Don't be a slacker!
I DON'T RECOMMEND HIM AT ALL. i disagree with all of you who said he's a great teacher. HE IS NOT A GREAT TEACHER. TRUST ME, AND HARDLY FUN AT ALL. his demeaning personality is what kills this class from any kind of "FUN".
This was an amazing class, I learned a lot of astronomy. Lectures are really important and you must takes good notes, with that you don't really need the book. Tests are mostly based on lectures so you must attend class everyday.
Mr. Falk is the greatest teacher. He wants everyone to succeed and makes himself available and very approachable. He provides all the resources you need to get an A. I don't know why people complain that his class is hard "because you have to show up for class", etc. Isn't that the reason we pay for college?
he's a cool guy, his lectures are very interesting, it was a pleasure comig to class everyday. and yes about his jokes, yes they are all true.
Great teacher! Said the lame jokes and admitted to them. Gives extra credit if you attend atstronomy related events. Study and take good notes and you will get a good grade.
I cant recommend this teacher enough. his class was very enjoyable and interesting, the would be dull lectures were made very fun and the tests were very fare and well constructed. also he likes to involve students in outdoor research, and awards extra credit if you go to an astronomy museum or observatory. also he's a very interesting comedian
Falk is a great teacher. 4 tests (very fair on the tests), 1 semester assignment and many FUN extra credit options. Lectures are pretty interesting, and he is always encouraging his office hours. Great teacher who really loves Astronomy. Oh, and his sense of humor is cheesy but great!
Very funny teacher with a dorky sense of humor. He covers everything in class so if you pay attention and make notes you don't even need a book, lots of extra credit possibilities to fix your grade. Tests are not that hard. And material is not more difficult than popular science TV shows.
Hey guys, ok what i am saying now is true! THIS PROFF. DOES NOT KNOW HOW TO COMMUNICATE WITH HIS STUDENTS..CURRENTLY I HAVE A "B" IN THE CLASS BUT THE GIRL NEXT TO ME SUFFERS ALOT AND I FEEL BAD FOR HER. IF YOU DON'T KNOW ASTRONOMY VERY GOOD THEN THIS CLASS IS NOT FOR YOU..HE MAKES YOU LEARN A LOT. MY GORLFRIEND HAD HIM BEFORE AND SHE REGRET IT
This professor is useless, the guy below me is true and he does't even care how much his students work and his grades are based on the tests.he doesn't care if you are trying your best.I wouln't reccomend this teacher.Stay away!!I have a "c" but i did a lot of work so i am expecting an "A"
Horrible teacher, if you are near to Pierce college then take Astronomy over there because this one is horrible.Do not reccomend this teacher. he does not care if you are working hard..i certenly agree with two guys below me.
I took Astro Lab and found the class to be very interesting. Mr. Falk is a brilliant teacher who really cares about the subject and his students. Go to class, pay attention and take notes. The study guides are great- that's exactly what's on the tests. All in all, a great experience and one of the more interesting science courses. Highly recommend!
This teacher is from away from teaching. His tests are hard. if your major is not astronomy then i would suggest to take another class or take astronomy with another teacher because you have to be mastered in astronomy to pass this class! not reccomended! horrible
Please note that the last bad three ratings are posted by the same angry student. What does this say about "Ratingmyprofessor" now?
David Falk is a good professor. He makes material as easy to understand as possible. Reading the book does help, but if you only want to pass, attending class will suffice. Forming study groups before tests help a lot.
AMAZING teacher. Such a good person and awesome teaching style. He likes to joke and he's very down to earth. He gives you a study guide and if you study it you will get an A. If you want an A, read the book. Definately take good notes too as he gives you most of the material you need for the study guide during lecture.
Really easy teacher and easy to understand. Very open to questions and answers.Make sure you write notes down during his lecture. He gives a study guide one or two weeks before the tests and all his questions are pretty much based on the study guide. REALLY EASY.
He loves his subject. Life changing class. Will never look at the sky at night in the same way again. Disciplined and fair. No cell phones, please. You'll be sorry. Loved his class.
He loves his subject. Life changing class. Will never look at the sky at night in the same way again. Disciplined and fair. No cell phones, please. You'll be sorry. Loved his class.
Amazing teacher, he is passionate about what he does but seriously needs to update his notes or the exams. Half of the things covered in them arent even discussed in class?. Tests are a major part of your grade, attend class and try to do every extra credit possible. I have a C now, hope I can bump it up to an A on the final.
You will be AMAZED by astronomy! Take astro for science, it is very fun & interesting. Sure, could be intimidating and look like it's "hard", but all you have to do is listen and take good notes. He talks fast sometimes. I went to every extra credit opp. They're fun & cool! He's a respectable, funny, and great prof. Study guide handed. I got an A!
Class is interesting. If you want o get an A in the class take great notes and read them for the tests. His tests are based on his notes, I didnt even use the book. The teacher offers extra credit and he teaches the class in a fun way.
Great teacher, interesting and organized lectures, gives fun star shows and most importantly give a study guide for the exams with includes everything you need to know, if you go by that guide you cannot fail, highly recommend
Great class!! Seemed intimidating at the beginning but overall a very fun class. Exams are fair and a study guide is given. Overall good teacher although he can certainly be a little clearer at times. But highly recommended
Pay attention in class, and when studying for tests, don't just use what's in the study guide, study EVERYTHING! Everything he says in his lectures will be on the test so take notes! Fun class, Interesting, corny jokes (but funny anyway)! I totally enjoyed this class. Nice guy.
This semester i had 3 classes and two of them are fine but this Astronomy class is such a headache that i am even counting the days and hours just to get over it. It goes really hard. He does not give you chances to improve student's grades. He has a weird way of making jokes that are nonsense. I am going to take this class with another teacher.
To compare Mr. Faulk to an astronomical object would define him as a singularity; there is nothing else like him in the Universe. He will really change the way you look at the sky. If you are interested in astronomy, there is never a dull moment in this class. Faulk breaks down complex concepts so they're easily understandable. Highly recommended.
Very hard teacher. very hard to understand. Questions on tests and quizzes are confusing. You basically have to remember every word he speaks and read the chapter 2x! Ask questions!Do extra credits! and do every assignment you will be lucky to pass with a C!
Very Nice Professor. Very organzied, clear, and easy to understand. When I first enrolled in this class, i had no idea what a "star" was, and I passed this class. So i dont see a reason why people are complaining. All his tests are based on his lectures, which are very clear and informative and easy to understand. He made astronomy fun! Great class
I had him for Astro 1 & 5 You will learn Astronomy with this guy. Show up to class everyday, take really good notes, and READ the chapters! Tests are BASED on the study guide. Sometimes does a review before the test. A lot of opportunity 4 extra credit. FOR THE LAB: Make sure to be there everyday, ALWAYS have your materials, and follow directions!
seems like a very nice man, but his class was terrible. lectures (or perhaps his voice) were so boring, i had trouble just staying awake. i had no idea what he taught in that class. although i went everyday and i read the book, i can't say i learned anything about astronomy.
Nice man and fair grader :) It can get a little boring in class, which he knows and tries to compensate for with bad jokes followed by making fun of his bad jokes. There's a lot of information covered in every class so you really need to show up.
Nice guy, cool class, drags a little at times. Uses text, but I didn't have the money to get it. Took the class anyway and managed to pass with a B. Just make sure you're there to take notes and you can use Google with the study guides he gives out.
Great teacher, extremely interesting class. He doesn't only teach astronomy but actually gets you involved with it, lots of E.C. that is interesting to do, he organizes planetarium show and stargazing sessions.phenomenal!I also took his lab class, which was great too. Great class worth taking!
When you take a class with a professor as passionate about the subject matter as Professor Falk, you learn that not all teachers actually like what they do. This class is not only fascinating, but the professor teaches in a way that makes astronomy applicable to everyday life. He is not hard, but there is a lot to cover. Take good notes. I highly recommend taking this class.
What an AMAZING class.! He really loves what he teaches, the notes you take in class are VERY important he covers eerything thats on the study guide. Make sure you take very good notes, i thoguht his test were very easy. This class is extremely intresting and i strong recommend you take it
I had absolutely no interest in Astronomy, I told myself I was bored and that the class would be unenjoyable so I failed my first test, after that I decided to sit in the front and make myself interested, so I starting taking notes, YOU MUST PAY ATTENTION TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN THIS CLASS AND TAKE NOTES, Falk is passionate and hes a really good teache
Mr. Falk is soo passionate about Astronomy, his review sheets are everything that are on the test, I got a B in the class, take excellent notes, do not sleep and sit in the front... I took the class for 5 saturdays from 8a-6:30 wasnt too bad...JUST TAKE NOTES, LISTEN, ask questions!!!! I failed the first test by not doing these things!!!
WOW! What can I say, this guy should have his own show.Forget Bill Nye the science guy. This is "Proffessor Falk the guy that can talk". Energy, Enthusiasm,Funny,Smart,Somebody; Get this guy in the studio, the kids will love him as much as I did.I'm sure about that.
I thought the class was exciting, so Jupiter, the class was VCAP so a lot lf material in 5 wks, So strap on your seat belts and get ready for an interesting ride into the Universe. Have fun.
Professor Falk is amazing!!! He is very funny in a dorky way and when he laughs at his own jokes it's so adorable! If you read the book for definitions, attend class, do the study guide and review yours notes there is no reason why you wouldn't at least get a B. I highly recommend him! If you love Astronomy (like me) TAKE HIM! BEST PROFESSOR!
Take this class! -Q:How do I get an A? -A:Show up to class, review the study guides, go to three of the extra credit opportunities (for good measure) and poof... you've got an A! And if you still need help, there are almost always tutors/ex-A-students working with his students that ask for help. He loves Star Trek! Use that to schmooze him.(bonus)
Good teacher and nice guy. He really knows what he's talking about and I've never seen him not be able to answer a question. You have to study, your grade is based on tests throughout the semester. He does give a study guide however and literally asks if people don't get what's on it. Plus there is a bit of EC.
Professor Falk is my favorite teacher! He's awesome! You have to show up. He's very helpful and he does what I wish all of my professors would do. He asks everyone what they need to review and he lets everyone ask questions after each chapter and he goes over it again. He's also funny and very nice. Two thumbs up!
Awesome teacher! I took Astronomy 001 with him too and i was just great. I would take another class with him if it was offered. Not an easy A though, you really have to pay attention and make sure you are never absent.
I love Professor Falk! He's so funny and makes class and Astronomy so interesting. He's incredibly intelligent, clear, and answers every question. His jokes make it easier to remember the material! Come to every class. You can even do extra credit (up to 15 pts). I'm getting an A so far. Take lab with him too. He rocks!
The class is made up of three mid terms 45 q's each and a final. he gives you study guides, and every class he covers an area of the study guide. it is really up to you to study and pass. Try not to be bored lol...he flips out if anyone gets near his projector
Easy if you study.
super easy class if you pay realy good attention and your take your notes. dont buy the book. has 4 tests and couple of quizes. ps. he makes you buy a tutorial book and only uses 3 pages! that was the only downside. he also gives 15 pt extra credit opportunity whiched helped me bump up my grade to an A :)
He is a great teacher. You must take really good notes. The study guide is all you really need to study which he covers in class. Extra Credit helped with grade.
Professor Falk is awesome!! He really cares that his students understand everything and his jokes are pricless! He gives study guides before each exam and offers extra credit opportunities. Easy class if you attend, pay attention and follow the material/notes given. Take his lab too.
LOVE professor Falk! I'm a psych major and I was so fascinated by the subject and learned so much about astronomy that I wanted to switch majors! He tells the corniest jokes but is a fair and enthusiastic teacher. He wants everyone to understand the material and he offers plenty of extra credit opportunities. Take good notes and listen in class!
This class is hard. Especially for those with a busy schedule. Be prepared before coming to class and ask questions or else you won't pass the tests even with studying. Again, this class is hard.
For an astronomy professor, he's very easy. The book isn't necessary, just make sure you can answer all the questions on the study guides. This class can be much harder than he makes it, so consider yourself lucky if you have him. There is no math, just memorization. Take good notes.
Great professor. Makes the subject very fun. His lectures are very clear so make sure you take good notes because you are going to need them. Gives a study guide for every test. If u take notes and study you should get an A.
Overall this is an easy class. Be sure to take good notes, and attend every class meeting. If you miss a class, you will fall behind. We never used the book, but I did read every chapter at home. My only complaint is that the chapters are LONG and BORING!
David J. Falk is the best astronomy teacher in the Universe.
This is not an easy class but i have to admit, Falk gives a good lecture. He made me intrested in astronomy.Take notes and go to tutoring or see him after class if you need help.
Great professor! Explains everything during his lectures so don't miss any of his classes. Reading the book is mandatory if you want to pass the class.
His jokes are so bad that they are Hilarious!!! I have even told a few at the party on Saturday. You'll now what I'm talking about when you take his class! Just take really good notes do miss class your sure to get an A! Take his class awesome teacher!
Professor Falk is the man! Went in to astronomy dreading the course and feeling scared (science has never been my thing), but this classed totally flipped my mindset. The professor lectures AMAZING and keeps you actually wanting to learn more. I've developed a passion for astronomy I didn't even know I had. Thanks professor Falk!
This class was complete murder! Tons of Astronomy information thrown at you in just four short weeks (Summer Session 2013). I had to read lecture notes and the class textbook on more than 15 chapters! As for Falk, he has a brilliant Astronomy mind, but he lacks patience and he's not really a people person. In closing, I got a C so I'm happy.
I commented before but I must say this. I took Falk's class in Summer 2013 and it was full of people who didn't understand Astronomy. Everyone in the class needed another student and Falk to help him or her pass the class. I finished with a C but I worked SUPER hard for that grade and I didn't need no help from no other students or Falk.
I took falk for astronomy lab, his class requires that you show up everyday because all assignments are done in class and worth 10-15 points. He gives you a study guide for his midterm and final which is extremely helpful because he bases his test on the study guide. He makes sure people are not lost and takes the time to explain to you. Take him!
This class is super hard and boring. You expect him to use the dome, but he doesn't. He only used it once. His tests are super hard. Makes you buy $40 dollar work book and you only use less then 5 pgs. Gives you study guides but questions on test are nothing like it. Requires a lot of studying in order to pass.
This class is EASY and INTERSTING. He uses the dome DAILY and gets all the students involved. The workbook is continuously used to enhance the concepts learned in class and contains homework. The cost of the book was definitely worth the price a million times. The study guides he gives you is EXACTLY on the test! Studying is EASY!
I took this class as a VCAP class and I loved it. Professor Falk is an amazing teacher and knows his stuff. He is corny funny and his jokes makes you laugh. His class is easy and fun, and informative.
Could not ask for a better teacher. The tests may not be easy, you have to study, but he goes over all the material and hands out study guides weeks before the tests. He is very clear on everything. I've been able to keep an A in the class simply by reviewing my notes and reading chapter reviews. There is a required workbook that we barely used.
Fun class, and can provoke an interest in the most apathetic of students. Difficulty is fair. Textbook not really necessary - just take good notes and ensure you can answer the study guide questions.
Never again... a little on the hard side. Nice Professor over all.
The class is really kool you just have to read the book take good notes and study
I really enjoyed his class, he found a way to keep it interesting. It's not hard you just really have to read, take notes, and study. But he is always available during office hours to answer any questions. A very good teacher.
changed one of his exams to multiple choice to a essay exam 3 paragraphs each questions 6 questions last minute. did not even email us told us the day of the exam!
With cc classes usually being monotonous, boring and drab, Prof. Falk actually made astronomy interesting and dare I say fun? He is very organized and presents the information needed to pass his class clearly through his lectures. Textbook use was minimal, except that you need the lab book for some worksheets. Tests are fair and not too difficult.
Proffesor Falk knows how to teach a class! He had the whole class engaged and his jokes are funny but at the same time educational. I would definitely recommend him :) you wont regret it
He is great professor. He really knows his stuff and always answers any questions you may have. He gives study guides before the tests way ahead of time so you have enough time to prepare. His jokes are up to you to decided if they are funny or not.
Falk's funny and makes the class interesting but his tests are ridiculously hard. He does give a study guide prior to each test but the questions on it are completely different from the ones on the exam. By the end of the semester, nearly 70% of the class dropped. If you're trying to fulfill the science section on the IGETCGE look somewhere else.
If your looking for an easy A look somewhere else. If you want to LEARN take his class. He is funny and truly loves teaching the subject. After working an 8 hour shift he kept me engaged and awake until 10pm every Thursday. Gives study guides before every test. Tests are exactly on what he covers in class. Go to class, take notes, get an A.
Professor Falk is a grate professor. And cares about the students making the class fun and intresting. All I can say is take him.
I loved this class and Professor Falk is amazing. It's not an easy A class, you gotta show up for the classes, take notes and read the material. I mean Cmon we are in college you gotta study. He's professional and strict about his lectures so don't be using your phones or talking or acting like high school kids, but he's funny and cool!
Ok he's one of the best professors I've ever had. He's funny and he answers all of your questions and he really knows everything about anything. you get study guides before tests. you have to show up for classes. He's organized and professional and he expects students to act the same way, which is a good thing. Not an easy A class! Best Professor!!
Falk is absolutely hilarious, tons of jokes throughout his lectures, which makes it fun. His exams are tough, but he does give study guides. Don't rely entirely on them though - DO READ THE TEXTBOOKTAKE DETAILED LECTURE NOTES. It's tough even with that. He's a great teacher with a real passion for astronomy, but study hard, hard, hard.
I took this class during the winter session, 5 weeks of awesomeness. Take notes and follow along on the study guides he passes out. The test are based entirely on those. Great lectures, lots of jokes. Attendence is a must. By far the best class I have taken at Valley so far.
First winter class I took I expected this to be hard but this professor is amazing in lectureing, very funny ,aa nd inspirational. You'll do great if you take good notes , read the study guide ,and read the back of book . I miss this class !
He would give study guides, but its no use. His tests were worded and completely different from the guide!! if your not good at test taking don't take this class.
Amazing class. He is a great teacher and jokes around a lot making the class very enjoyable. He gives many opportunities for extra credit. Gives out study guides for every mid-term, use that to study. 100% recommend this class . I wish I could take it again!
I took his class in 2015. Such an easy class. He gives extra credit. He covers a lot of information, so you need to be a fast writer and good at note taking. But he is so nice and asks so often if anybody has any questions. He is so patient and will take any question. If you are a visual learner, take his class because he draws lots of diagrams.
Mr. Falk was a great professor. He gives study guides for each tests. If you study the study guide and pay attention in his lectures you will be fine. Take good notes and ask questions if you don't understand a concept. He is good at lecturing and makes the class interesting, lectures are not boring at all. I never read the book and still got an A.
Excellent professor. Very knowledgeable in what he teaches. Here's the cheat sheet on how to pass the exams. Take notes on whatever he emphasizes. When he gives you the study guide, have it out during the lecture & answer the questions as it goes. Study the night before & you'll be fine. Fun class if you love science in general. Book is useless
Tests are primarily based on in class discussions. Make use of his extra credit opportunities!
Fantastic professor! If you read the book, pay attention, and do the work you will have no problem passing this class. But if you want to skip class, or play on your phone when you are in class, expect to fail. Also wouldn't hurt to watch some Star Trek as he is a huge fan and sometimes uses it to help explain concepts.
Very fun professor to take. He adds humor to his lectures and gives lots of extra credit opportunities. My number 1 thing to say is to read the book. This lady in my class said she hated him because he was too hard but said she didn't read the book. It's the study of the UNIVERSE. He'd need double the time to explain everything. Read and pass!
Great class! A bit tough, but fascinating and Flak keeps it entertaining.
Awesome professor! Falk is very sweet and will answer any questions you have for him. I regret renting his book, lectures are enough for the tests. Take excellent notes and you will pass. REALLY know your stuff, as the material is not phrased exactly how it is said during lectures, on tests. Very funny. DO NOT skip class. Highly recommend him!
He was great! He had a great knowledge of space & how it worked, he keeps up to date with what nasa & what the world is doing to aide space exploration, cant miss any of his classes due to how much you're learning & don't talk too much while he's giving lecture cuz he gets mad, great class i'd recommend him.
Good Professor, took him in a winter session. very passable just need to put in the time.
You can tell he loves astronomy. There were four exams, lowest grade was dropped. Sometimes there might be small quizzes, my class only had to take one. Going to class and writing down notes is key. He emphasizes stuff that will be on the tests but that alone might not get you an A. Also reading the book will help you tons. Very interesting, though
Tests were super hard. If you are a bad test taker don't take this class. He gave study guides but they were nothing like the tests.
Took him for Astro lab and by far he is very difficult. He makes you work so hard for 1 simple unit. Keep in mind that astronomy lab is a 1 unit course but yet he treats it as if its a 3 unit course. Overall, i would suggest that you don't take his class. He treats his students as if they are Astro majors and he thinks hes teaching to NASA students
he is super sarcastic but very hard to understand the material. His study guides are not very useful and if you don't pass the test you won't pass the class.
Take this professor if you have no other choice. His tests are hard and his study guides don't really help much. Read the book if you don't understand his lectures. He would make cheesy jokes in class, which were pretty entertaining. His quizzes are easy (don't count for much of your grade though) but tests are pretty difficult
I LOVED this class! My favorite class at Valley so far. You need to show up, pay attention, take notes and read the book. He gives great lectures and his tests are easy - all multiple choice. My one regret is taking it in the Winter - it was so much fun I wish I'd taken it during the normal session.
Astr1 should only taken it if you are interested in the subject. If you do take it I Highly recommend prof Falk. He is great, very knowledgeable, explains things in a clear fashion, always keeps the class entertaining and is always available to answer questions. He really focuses on having you understand the material vs just memorizing stuff.
Grade is based on tests only (rarely any assignments) he offers up to 15points extra credit. Definitely go to class and don't miss a lecture. I think you can get an A without the book. He gives study guides for all exams but you actually have to understand the concepts and it's parts. If you study the guide alone and just that, you'll get a B.
He's amazing at lecturing in a way that will make you understand the material. course was really interesting and he knows what he's talking about. He's very serious about his material and tests aren't the easiest. Lots of info to know, his study guides barely ever relate to the test. Not really an easy A.
I appreciate his passion for Astronomy and his lectures are very entertaining! The only complaint I would have is he doesn't believe in review before or after tests. He is available during office hours tho. If you show a desire to learn he will have your back in the end.. I hoped to get more out of his class but all and all I'm satisfied.
Astronomy is by far the hardest class I have taken in college (3rd year student) but I also loved the challenge. I never studied as hard as I did for any other class. You WILL learn A LOT in this class. Do not miss class and take good notes. Class consist of all test/quizzes and no other assignments. Falk is a funny guy and an AMAZING instructor!
This class is not easy one but Professor makes it so interesting that I enjoyed it! Don't miss a lecture (they are really interesting). The lectures are everything you need for the tests, so make notes carefully and you'll get A.
He breaks it down to simple concepts and make an absolute fun class out of a hard subject. I wouldn't recommend you to take this course if you are not interested in the subject. There is almost no homework but some readings, there are plenty of extra credit research and study guides, the most fun class of all my college journey.
I can't believe how much time this guy wastes not teaching us anything. Throughout the class there are periods of him asking us questions about astronomy followed by 30 seconds of silence. Isn't that what you are supposed to be teaching us? Obviously we don't know the answers. That's why we're here. Also it's 2018, Use power point!
If you're only taking this class to satisfy a general education requirement, and are expecting an easy A, this isn't the class for you. You have to study hard in this class for an A. But if you really are interested in astronomy or you're majoring in it, I would recommend this professor. Very knowledgeable and enthusiastic.
I loved this class. His lectures are easy to understand if you like astronomy. You do have to show up for class and listen to the lectures if don't care about astro. Barely any homework. He gives a study guide for test.
NOT A EASY A! You need to work hard for the A in his class. The class grade is 95% exams (4 exams including final). The other work won't help your grade very much. Study really hard and take good notes. He doesn't use PowerPoint and talks really fast (which I disliked). Unless you are passionate about Astronomy, I wouldn't recommend taking him.
The Professor himself was awesome. Says hilarious cheesy jokes and is very respected. He mainly gives out heavy lectures and uses the whiteboard to demonstrate the teachings. There are a few exceptions such as everything is based off Test and quizzes. The Final determines what your grade is in the class. I would not recommend. Hard Intro. Class
I really enjoyed this class, Prof Falk really loves Astronomy & it shows. You will NEED to be at the lectures and TAKE NOTES. All tests were based mostly on lectures. I actually didn't like the book very much, it was confusing so didn't read it much, just took class notes & researched online when needed and I did fine. Class lectures move fast!
Very educated about subject so you learn a lot. Makes you EARN grade, but I figured out how to get A. Show up, take good notes, don't bother with book. Do ALL the extra credit. The MC exams are MEANT to trip you up with wrong answer in the choices. So study. Before you can see the choices after the question, cover them up. Think of it, then answer.
Prof Falk is one of my favorite professors! He asks if anyone needs clarification at least 4 times a day. It's ALL lecture. Don't bother with the book, but if you miss a day it'll hurt. If you take good notes and study the study guides to understand concepts not just the answers, you'll do well. But good notes are essential. Show up, work and laugh
Dr. Falk is a great professor who not only knows his subject matter very well but thoroughly enjoys it. He kinda looks like a rat with glasss but who cares, hes a scientist! For your science!
Frustrating. Seems to really like Rats
Prof Falk is amazing, please take him if you can!
Prof. Falk is very enthusiastic about his subject. He always tells dad jokes, even on the tests, and makes sure everyone is following before moving on to the next subject. His lectures are priceless, for the tests and simply for the enjoyment of the subject. Plenty of extra credit. He cares a lot for his students and doesn't want anyone to fail!
Professor Falk is wonderful! He is truly passionate about astronomy and teaches it beautifully. His dad jokes are always funny & lectures are never boring! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Was 15-20 minutes late to class for the majority of the semester, which hindered the lecture due to how little time we actually had to learn. four tests, three midterms and a final. Due to how often he was late, he had to rush through some parts of the lecture, making the tests difficult. Extra credit is a MUST in this class. Wouldn't recommend.
Professor Falk is entertaining if you like dad jokes. He explains the material pretty well and goes over the study guides thoroughly before the midterm and final. The final is cumulative so be sure to review the midterm again before you take it. There is an assignment each week work 10 pts, you lose points for the week if you miss class.
I took this class for winter. As long as you pay attention and take notes youll do fine. It is very lecture and note heavy, but he explains everything really well and takes his time to answer any questions you have. The class is really interesting and his science dad jokes are one for the books
I love Prof Falk! He's passionate and really funny. Astro 1- TAKE NOTES DURING LECTURES, everything on the tests is info he will teach you during class. You don't need the textbook, attendance is the most important. Astro 5 (lab class)- More difficult. You get to use telescopes but there is a lot of formulas and technical stuff you have to learn.
Good professor! Make sure you attend class. Missing one will set you back. He explains things very very well.
very picky in grading and testing, in exam you couldn't see a question again to correct it. Hid behavior is like a judge and police with guilty people. I attend all classes and use all time the tutor and know the materials very good. I take A in most of my courses and only a few B, this is the first C that I take and I think that was not fair.
I took Professor Falk for Spring 2020 right when we converted to Online classes, honestly still very solid, and managed to keep it interesting over Zoom! There's nothing like being in the planetarium and having him geek over it, every time! You really feel his passion for the subject. Heavy lectures, I took all the tutoring I could get and got a B!
For coming back to school in 7 years, I was glad to take his class. He is very funny. He does not assign HW often & every month there is a midterm. There were 2 assignments,3 extracredit chances, 4midterms and 1 final. The midterms are hard - be sure to write his lecture down + use his study guides!!! He is how I imagine a science professor to be.
Your grade is just based on your tests. I read, went to tutoring and received a C. If you're taking this course for IGETC, find someone else. Great professor but be ready to read and work hard for your grade. Not sure how he's on zoom but he is huge on cheating during tests.
Good teacher overall who is passionate about the subject. However, grade for the semester is based on one small quiz, two midterms, and a final exam. He gave extra credit opportunities (watch NASA videos and review them in essay format). I found his online lectures dry and repetitive, not sure about in-person classes. Tests are based on lectures.
One word: AMAZING. i learned so much from Professor Falk. Yes, it was an intense class, but you learn SO, SO much. I got a B, but i could've gotten an A if i did all the extra credit. I recommend forming study groups and taking lots of notes. I miss this class and the professor!!
Good professor overall reading is recommended but you can still make it through without out it for a small cost to your grade. Will answer all questions and seems in general very passionate about Astronomy, get ready for nerdy but golden jokes
This course was completely asynchronous. There were two midterms and a final. he posts time-consuming lectures with a mini quiz that you have three attempts on. It may seem like tough work, but if you have some common sense, you should be fine.
Great professor. I think his score may be low because people don't like the subject or the amount of work for this course. There's lengthy lectures (45 min+ each), but easy to understand and he keeps it interesting. Questions every lecture, 2 midterms and final. Lowest midterm grade is dropped. Good class and pretty easy to get decent grade.
Professor Falk is an amazing teacher. Words cannot explain how passionate he is about what he teaches. Mr. Falk has taught me a lot, and I learnt a valuable lesson of patience as well. His lectures are funny and entertaining. He cares about his students and truly wants them to do well. All I can say is he is one of the best out there.
Took this class since it was required for GE was less then half a percentage point from an A and was refused any extra work or a bump for it, had an A the entire class until the last 2 days, really inconsiderate, take someone else
Professor Falk's AST01 is a challenging but rewarding class. Detailed lectures and attendance are key - no need for the textbook. Utilize tutoring and resources like unstuckstudy AI to prepare. The workload is heavy, but Falk's passion makes it an engaging experience.
Prof. Falk makes the class quite easy. He has lecture videos and quizzes to make sure you paid attention. I suggest taking notes and actually storing some of the info Prof Falk teaches. He makes Astronomy (online) easy and interesting so please take advantage of the easy credit and fun class.
Despite the frustration of this being a 1 credit class requiring real effort and thought, the class was quite nice. We did stay an hour past ending time one night but the charismatic Prof and simple assignments/ tests really made the small annoyances insignificant. I learned a lot from this class and I wish the best to Prof. Falk and his loved ones
He's classes were definitely fun and interesting got to learn so much about the space and basics of how it works. Definitely if possible with take other courses with him.
He's a tough grader. Should have received a B by the end of the course but gave me a C instead. Overall class was boring, and his jokes are lame. Get another professor for this class.
He was very funny and made the class interesting. He made it fun to learn the topics I would take again
