Dr. Fenner is highly proficient in his area of expertise and has excellent teaching skills. He's friendly, approachable, and non-pretentious. What a terrific asset to the UNF Philosophy Department!
I thought Dr. Fenner was an awesome teacher. He has a great way of explaining things and his teaching techniques are fun and unique.
he is a really good prof. makes jokes throughout class...take good notes b/c the tests are kinda hard.
Very nice and funny guy, extremely knowledgable on subject. Tests were pretty easy, straight from the syllabus. He is a fair grader. I would definetely recommmend him. I actually enjoyed going to his class.
Dr. Fenner is an awsome teacher. He has a great sense of humer and uses his awsome personality to make his lectures very fun. Also he only required one $25 dollar book for the whole semester. The rest of the readings were on line (AKA free).
Best teacher to take this course with. He does not require you to spends hundreds on books, and his lectures are actually interesting and entertaining.
Awesome professor, awesome stories, and awesome course.
Dr. Fenner is fantastic. I wish I could go back in time and take as many courses with him as possible. You will learn so much from him. His tangents usually have a purpose, but he does stray off topic. He is one of the best, best teachers at UNF. Not too hard, but you'll still get something from the course.
I did not enjoy this class. It sounds fun, but it ends up being a bunch of technical jargon about film theory, not about Philosophy IN the films, but Philosophy OF film. Also, the professor thinks he is the end all be all of the definition of art. He states, "It's only art if the art world says it's art". Meaning: a student's painting is not art.

Fun class. Learned quite a bit about film as an art form and as an aesthetic object.
This class is so easy. The papers are sent in via e-mail and there is a midterm and a final. Thats it. Take it without the friday break down session, you have to do more work in that one. I found it very easier, never went to class and got an A.
very easy class. only does PP and puts every single one online. 3 papers due via e-mail. don't ever have to go to class except for mid-term and final which were directly from PPs.
Dr. Fenner has taught my Aesthetics, Environmental Ethics, Intro to Phil, and Metaphysics classes and he is my favorite teacher! Very fair and very interesting- he keeps lectures fun. I highly recommend him!!
Dr. Fenner was an excellent teacher. His class was very interesting and I learned a lot in there. As long as you came to class and put forth some effort you shouldn't have had trouble passing the class. He explains things very well, and if on occasion something was not clear it was explained more in depth in the break out class.
Professor Fenner is interesting to listen to because he makes the lectures fun with the anecdotes that he tells, but it is easy to fall asleep when learning about the history of philosphors.
Easy Class-Extremely hard Exams!
THE BEST Professor. I HIGHLY reccomend him. The break out sessions made the material that much easier to understand. But you have to attend class, its part of your grade.
fun class, but beware.. his TA's grade the stuff not him! his lectures are funny and enjoyable, tangents come daily, but if you listen to them all the way through they do make sense. (maybe not at first.. but eventually) friday sessions are the only grades youll have, but attendance counts all week. 3 major tests.. pay attention and youll be fine.
Dr. Fenner is certainly entertaining and helpful, but he likes to use a lot of psychobabble. This may be him personally or it may just be the study of aesthetics. Anyway, Dr. Fenner + Aesthetics = mental masturbation. It's seems to be a lot of talking that sounds technical and important but at the end of the day isn't very useful.
He was a great teacher. I enjoyed his class so much. It was an easy garde. Even breakout session was an easy class. I would recommend his calss for anyone.
When I took him last semester he was very funny, which helps you to pay attention in class. However, he oversimplifies the concepts with weird analogies that don't correspond to the exam questions. The exams are difficult.
He's amazing.. so much fun.
Great teacher. Keeps things interesting. 3 papers (on God, critical thinking, and ethics), midterm, and final. Pretty easy class. Would definitely recommend him.
Great professor! His lectures are very entertaining. Only downfall is that attendance is mandatory. Your grade is based on what TA you have.TAKE HIM!!
Great class, great teacher! he's super funny and makes the lecture interesting and he posts the PowerPoint on blackboard.
he is hilarious! makes class interesting and his lectures are fun, there are 3 papers you write for the class and thats it! plus he shows movies for extra credit, i would deff take him again plus breakout teachers bailey and alves are really good!
He is a very nice man and has a wonderful knowledge of content.
LOVE Dr. Fenner!!!! I REALLY wish he was teaching more classes! He is a dean as well, so he has his grad minions do most of the grading and one on one teaching (and they leave quite a bit to be desired,) but overall this class is great! He's got a wonderful sense of humor, and is a very effective teacher, and he has reasonable expectations.
I never actually attended this class because all power points are online. The study guides tell you EXACTLY what is going to be on the tests and the papers are easy. Easy A class!
A really interesting class an he relates the topics back to real life things that are occuring. Open discussion is a big part of class but it very useful. Barely used the textbook and studied only from his notes.
He's a funny guy. Deserves his job as good professor. -STS
Great and funny teacher. Wish I had him for ALL my classes
Professor Fenner makes a hard subject easy to understand and fun! He's a hilarious professor and you can definitely tell he LOVES his job. Would definitely recommend him for philosophy class.
this class was great. professor Fenner is entertaining, although he does often go off on tangents, but he always manages to come back to the lexture. My TA was Ben Wooten, who seemed to be better in tune with upper level philosophy than the intro, so I would suggest taking another TA
Fenner is GREAT. You can tell he loves his job and his students. He has power points, final reviews, and papers that are all connected to blackboard. Only minus is that he takes one point off your average for missing class. Class was pretty easy if you pay attention.
This man is the quintessential philosophy professor! His lectures are interesting and he chooses good TAs. He provides exactly what the course states - a thorough "introduction" to other realms of thought. Take notes and go to breakout sessions every week. A perfect gen-ed class with middle-of-the-road expectations!
For someone who wasn't interested in Philosophy, I thought he made his class perfectly entertaining and understandable. Breakouts were a pain, but the class was easy if you listened to lectures and took notes.
He is soooo sweet and funny. Nice guy and really cute. Class is super easy and teacher is very laid back. Take him! I loved him :) Very helpful
The lecture was fun but the breakout sessions were extremely frustrating
I will be honest I did not find much interest in this course and did not take much away. With that being said, Dr. Fenner is hilarious and made the course extremely palatable. One word of caution; he is assisted by TA's who could make this course more difficult than it should be.
This class was basically a joke. We took nothing away from it and spent money a textbook we never even use. Fenner basically said not to bother him outside of class, and even trying was a waste of both of our time. The breakouts were even more frustrating and there was no clear format on how to write our essays.
He has maybe five slides with two sentences each and then rants about the topic with the time left. The breakout professors are of NO HELP. Fenner gives weird examples too. He does try to get to know you. When you ask a question, he isn't bias towards his answer. Other than that, he does NO WORK OR GRADING. The TAs are really harsh on grading.
Powerpoints are general, he gives some useful analogies or examples but mostly rants or lets other students debate which doesn't help with understanding topics. Tests are kinda difficult and the papers are relatively easy so be sure to work hard on papers to keep your grade up. My breakout teacher was more helpful than professor
Easy class, one of the best teacher's I've took!
Easy class great professor, you will not regret it!
He is a really nice man and cares for all his students. He really tries to get students to understand the difficult topics he covers, but sometimes he ends up ranting. Study the powerpoints and go to the breakouts and you'll do fine on the exams. If you're willing to study before finals you'll be fine! Oh he's pretty funny also.
Fenner keeps things interesting and always cuts his lectures short. Don't buy the books cause the assignments in it are not a grade and don't help. Its only 4 easy papers a mid term and a final. If you don't go to class you can just take notes on the power points, although going to class helps and the lectures aren't bad at all. Definitely recomend
Fenner is the most odd guy you'll meet on campus but he is awesome, he brings comedy into philosophy and is worth taking whether you want to learn or just get a good grade.
Fenner cracks a lot of jokes and rambles during his Intro Philosophy lectures, but there are only a few papers and tests per semester and they arent very hard. He takes off points for missing class but its a big lecture hall so you can sign your friends in. The papers are graded by TA's who can be helpful sometimes.
Fenner is a very interesting guy. His lectures can get way off topic and he has a weird sense of humor. He reads straight off the powerpoints and they are available online. Attendance is counted, but you can have friends sign you in because it's in a bigger classroom. Only have a few papers that the TA's grade and they are relatively easy.
Fenner is a solid choice if you want to learn basic philosophy. Fair warning, though - he goes on tangents. All. The. Time. Personally, I enjoy the crazy side stories he tells! Sit up front if you want him to remember your name (for one lecture, that is). Don't be afraid to speak up either; he loves discussing weird/obscure/odd topics.
Love Fenner! Though he does go off on tangents, I find them enjoyable and he does cover everything he needs to. The tangents help me remember things more clearly! His breakout profs are both awesome. Easy, memorable, enjoyable. Would recommend
Intro to Philosophy was a really fun class. The professor went off on tangents but the material was still easy to learn.
I was in his smaller lecture class so attendance wasn't mandatory. His lectures are alright, you don't need to attend to pass. Your grades are made up of 4 generally easy papers, mid term, and final. Just study notes from ppts for exams. Super chill professor.
Fenner is hands down one of my favorite professors ever. He is super friendly and tries to get to know everybody (even with 200+ lecture classes). He makes lectures funny but you have to make sure to show up (if you miss its 1% off overall grade). No homework or book, however several essays and final/midterm is your entire grade with attendance.
a king. a god. dr fenner is the greatest. this class was so easy especially compared to some of the other philosophy professors here. every lecture was something new and he always kept it fun. as long as you pay attention somewhat and get your notes down in class, youll be fine
awesome lectures. Papers were simple. take notes and study for exams easy pass
God-like. So welcoming and willing to help you. I dropped my last philosophy class and was scared of this one, but Fenner makes it so easy to grasp. He's funny even though his emails and really wants everyone to pass. No stupid questions with him! His papers really make you think, but there aren't assignments other than taking notes and exams.
Terrible. Don't take him virtually. He said he doesn't understand how to use canvas and sends long emails as class lessons. The information doesn't seem like it would be hard to understand, but he literally does the bare minimum as a professor and just expects you to understand.
Prof Fenner sends out emails every day that you have a class and they go well into detail about whatever topic it is; He also adds a song of the day! He provides you with powerpoints and the pdfs for the readings. You can tell he actually likes what he's teaching which is nice. The adjunct prof does the actual grading but Fenner does the "lecture"
He does not assign any assignments unless it is your midterm and final. You cannot understand anything he is saying unless you are a super genius. No book, bare minimum power points, attendance is required is you want to pass. I learned literally nothing.
This class is an easy A. He sends out emails with the lectures that go along with a PowerPoint. Throughout the semester we only had two exams which were essay format and we had five days to complete, three papers, and a few mini assignments which are very easy and quick. Super easy grader. I wrote decent papers and exams and got full credit.
So caring, understanding, and knowledgable. Types his lecture into an email that go along with powerpoints & participation points for answering a simple question at the end (only in some emails). 3 papers, 1 midterm, 1 final. Responds to emails quickly & is very helpful. He gives good feedback on your papers. He is so sweet and a great professor!
He sends 2 emails a week explaining the assigned powerpoint. Sometimes gives articles to read but you're not graded on them. 3 papers, a mid-term, and a final exam. Kind of a tough grader so make sure you follow the directions carefully. Super low workload. He doesn't use canvas so keep track of your grades or you won't know until the end of semest
He has homework every single week and it's due on Thursdays, given on Monday, but every single week its only do a 300 word paragraph about whatever he wants. He's a little tough grader, but if you turn it in earlier then, if it's really bad, he'll let you do it over. Also he takes late assignments!!!
Hes an awesome professor with very simple requirements, just one assignment a week. The assignments are structured nice in a way that engages your brain to think. Hes a fair grader and as long as you do your work youll fairly pass with at least a B+. He accepts late assignments and curves the final grade.
Very easy class, he said himself it is one of the easiest classes you will take at UNF. One weekly assignment that is usually 300-500 words. Assignments are easy and he explains what he wants but take a little bit of thinking to answer in the limited word count. Not much feedback but accepts late work and is a really great professor over all!
Professor Fenner is such a caring professor and really helps you succeed. I took him for an online class and he sent out lecture messages weekly w/ an accompanying powerpoint and reading. There is 3 easy papers (500 words) through the semester plus a midterm, final exam, and a couple of assignments which was just a question based off the lecture.
Looking for an easy class to fulfil credit? Fenner is the way to go. I took over the summer, but course consisted of three 500 word papers, and 2 exams. Material is simple so class becomes easy. However, the major drawback is he runs his course ENTIRELY through email. Canvas is not used whatsoever. Confusion and miscommunication is inevitable!
Dr. Fenner is an excellent professor. I took this class as an online course and he still made the course interesting. He sent out an email everyday, that coincides with the reading/powerpoint. I would recommend taking a course taught by Dr. Fenner, you will love your experience.
Professor Fenner is a great intro philosophy class to take. If you care a lot about the subject take someone in person but if you are just taking this class because you have to then take him! He isn't too hard on grading papers (And yes 100% of the grade is papers) and he cares about his students. Great class.
Dr. Fenner is one of my favorite profs at UNF. He absolutely cares for anything you may care about and explains philosophical topics in extremely easy ways of understanding. We have 3 short written exams, 2 papers, and 1 presentation. Unless you do not like the topic of the course, you will most likely love his class as well.
He doesn't post grades on Canvas so you have to keep track of it yourself, but it's very easy to do. 3 exams (open note, internet, etc.), 1 group presentation & 2 papers, plus a few small assignments such as "growing something" like a plant and hiking the UNF trails. He's very passionate & gives good feedback on assignments. All around great prof.
He sends lengthy emails every Monday and Friday containing the lectures and has PowerPoints that match the content he talks about. They're easy to follow and helpful. Very writing heavy, you have 3 papers and 2 "exams" that are all writing prompts. Graded fairly and responsive to messages. Would 100% take him again and recommend his course.
Dr. Fenner's Environmental Ethics class was my first philosophy class and he is such an amazing professor. He loves what he teaches and wants his students succeed. He assigns 3 environmental ethics based books (there are not text books) to read and the tests and papers have some questions based from the readings. I wish he taught more classes.
Absolutely amazing guy. I know a lot of people take intro to phi. online for sake of ease, but taking it in person with Dr. Fenner was awesome. He's a super nice guy, lectures are entertaining, and it's overall a really easy class.
Professor Fenner is a super nice guy and tries his best to make his lectures funny and entertaining. However, the lectures are confusing and I found myself re-teaching the material to myself after class. The powerpoints he provides are helpful. you're graded on 4 different essays and have a small online quiz after each lecture.
I absolutely love this professor, hands down one of the best I've ever taken. He is truly passionate about what he teaches and encourages his students to engage in open-minded debates with one another . His assignments are fun, even the long ones (multiple essays). He is highly accessible outside of class. Take his class if given the chance!
Great professor, you're only graded on papers, but they are very easy to write. Lectures usually end 10-15 min early.
He plays music at the start of every class and he's funny. Show up because he does tiny pop quizzes or attendance for credit. Lectures kind of teach you, but for papers, you have to do a little research. Papers are only 500 words and he grades easier at the end of the semester.
Dr. Fenner is an incredible professor. He has such an aimable personality and adds personal anecdotes in relation to the lectures. Although attendance isn't mandatory, it's important to go to class because some things discussed in class will show up on the exam. You can tell he cares about his students and building a personal relationship with them
Best professor at UNF. Cares about students and their success, talks to them like people. My attendance wasn't always great, but he cares more that we are learning and understanding the course objectives. By far my favorite lectures I've ever attended. Often lectures were classroom discussions about whatever topic we were learning that week. 100/10
Super nice teacher with interesting lectures. Get ready to laugh! Does tend to go off topic with lecture though… We had only 3 paper 500 words and then take home write the response a midterm and final exam. However he did say he would change it next semester to multiple choice in person exam.
Great Professor overall!
Very funny professor and does make philosophy interesting to learn. He only grades on the midterm, final, and 3 papers and takes points off your final grade if you skip class. Would
He is amazing!
Amazing professor. Does tend to ramble a bit, but his lectures are always good. Only 5 total assignments in the course (3 papers, midterm, final), and your grades may be at the whim of the TAs (you can appeal a grade on a paper to him directly, though). Attend class as much as possible. Notes are pretty easy to take on his lectures.
The best class I have ever taken and best professor I have ever had. Such interesting info but not much work at all. Every assignment/test is take home and you have a week to do it. He is the sweetest, quirkiest man to ever exist and plays music before every class. Lots of discussion circles in the last few weeks but its so thought provoking .
I loved this professor he was very funny and kind. The lectures are always interesting and he engages in discussions with the class. It is also easy to get a good grade if you attend the lectures.
GO TO THE LECTURES!!! Class is much easier if you go because he lectures about material not on the powerpoints. Grade is only calculated on attendance, 3 papers, the midterm, and final so make sure you do well on them all.
Very lecture heavy. You'll have three papers and 2 tests so very lecture based. His lectures are pretty boring but he makes jokes here and there. He is very nice and always answers questions and never brings. down a student when they ask. He is very knowledgeable in Philosophy so he is an amazing teacher.
Absolutely amazing professor. All lectures and although we did have the PowerPoints on canvas most information was given in person. Attendance wasn't mandatory but I would go to get notes for exams.
Great lectures, and he'll be willing to discuss anything related you may be curious about or want clarification on. Be sure not to miss lectures though because the tests tend to cover things that are only brought up in class and nowhere else.
