A lot of people had problems with this teacher simply because they expected a blow off class and he actually made you work for your grade. If you ask me, I'd rather actually learn something, and I thought he was a good teacher because he challenged us.
Why do we use movies as our lecture? I wish he would have had more class discussions and actually taught.

Fairly boring teacher but I liked the class assignments and he tries very hard to make sure you understand the work. Really needs to learn that videos are not lectures but other than that he is good.
Dr. Filka is a very nice guy and always willing to explain things in more detail or in another way to try to help anyone understand. Sometimes it's a little hard to hear him if you sit in the back of the room.

He is definately boring, but fair, so if you want to get an A or B, its not that hard. He gives study guides for all the tests, and if you take the time to do them and study, they are helpful.

He "lectures" for about 45 minutes then the last half an hour we watch a dumb movie that doesn't appeal to any of us. He's such a boring teacher!!!!

definitely do not recommend this class. he talks about psychology and says it'll be on the test. says you never have to read the book and then puts stuff from the book on the test instead of what he said in class.
terrible. the man is a total snooze. lots of homework and reading. makes tests so you fail. dropped a 300 page binder on our desk the first day and said this is your homework. Had to grade his tests on a massive curve since everyone failed. don't take his class, and don't take greenham-conways psych class either. You'll be sorry. I did both.

The homework was a breeze but his lectures were the killer. I couldnt sit through them. I came from having the highest grade in my class to a c in his. and I was in Ap Psych. I used to love psych this class was a kill joy.I got nothing from the class that i didnt already now and any new stuff i didnt learn because his lectures didnt make sense
the lectures are so boring and he grades you on attendence so you have to be in class or your grade will suffer. The tests are very hard and the class is a bore. I used to like psych before i had this class.

I thought Dr. filak was a good teacher. He was thorough and explained exactly what was expected. We also had good lecture time and participation.
He was a bad teacher but i would have to say to take his class. Just do all your homework. Then if you do really bad on a test (Which you will) Take the time he gives you to write down all the ones you got wrong, because that is what the final is made up of. The curve he gives is fabulous. I got a 25 out of 50 on a test which was condidered a C.
don't take his class. you'll be bored out of your mind. psychology is my major, and he made me want to re-think it for awhile

Structured, disciplined, and at times, you find yourself having yawning contests with other students. How you take notes affects how well you do in class. Tests are relatively easy because its all word-for-word from the book. Copy test answers for Final! Very educated teacher but you watch a lot of movies and take notes on them.

David is the worst teacher ever. He is very unclear when he teaches. You take a lot of notes. Pretty much the entire class was notes. The tests are not easy. But he does use a curve so a lot of people pass. I would not recommend taking his class

Horrible Teacher!!! DO NOT TAKE!!! He thinks everyone knows is terms on day 1!! I am warning you, he is horrible. He is mono toned, horrible joke teller (I think its jokes he tries to tell), and the movies are a snore fest. If you have to take him pay attention and hold on for dear life. He does give 6 points for every day you stay for class.

I have found Mr. Filak to be a very wonderful teacher.Along with a study guide, he gives his students a clear foucs on what needs to be covered for the tests. I feel that the only reason someone may not pass this class with an A or B is because they arent trying hard enough. If you follow the study guide/reading assign you are guaranteed an A or B

Not a great teacher. Very monotone, boring, doesn't lecture much or explain the material. Writing assignments are easy, but he doesn't really prepare you well for tests or quizzes.

This class is very challenging and requires extensive amount of studying. When Dr. Filak lectors he is hard to follow. The exams cover a large amount of information and the questions seem almost like trick questions the way the professor words them.
He's a very smart man and knows alot about the subject but since Psyc 101 is one of those classes that everyone has to take I would not recomend him for anyone who doesn't plan to MAJOR in Psychology. His tests are difficult, there's a lot of reading, a lot of random assignments and no extra credit. Also if you miss just one class you're screwed.
If you pay attention in this class you will be fine, yes the lectures are extremely boring, but much information is provided. The movies are dreadful, and the notes are very informational. If you're not too bright, don't take this class :]
despite what most people here rating him think, he's really not that bad of a teacher. he makes the class so easy that you'd have to try to fail. he's slightly boring i guess, i'd be more interested if he seemed more excited about the subject himself. but half the kids who took his class were just really lazy, immature first year students. thats it
Dr. Filak is a very boring teacher. He is rather unhelpful, and takes little interest in his students. He had a special schedule for his final, and didn't inform his class. He just shows movies, but the class overall is very lame. If you want to actually learn something about psychology, don't take him.
Talk about a boring guy. He mostly showed videos and if you took a psychology class in high school then you've probably seen most of them. I felt bad for the people who hadn't taken the class bc you are kinda on your own to figuare everything out. He could've done so much more intresting things for the class to learn but he took the lazy way out.
He was a good teacher. He gave a 10 percent curve to every test. When i should of got d's i got c's. I past with a B, and i never remember complaining. The videos are interesting and he gives you all the info in notes for the tests.

Teacher isn't that bad. Curves the tests. Tells you what he wants on the tests, final exam is 25 questions from 4 tests WORD BY WORD. Homework = easy points. You don't have to pay attention to the lectures, but they help a lot, just read a little bit. Kinda boring, but it's school, not a show.
Not too bad of a professor. It's not an easy class,but not hard either. I got an A. Just show up for class, do the homework and study guides and you will do fine. You don't even really need to read as long as you do the study guides (I answered mostly with vocab). He does curve exams 10% and give a little Xcredit.

I'm taking his class right now. Tests are rather easy if you study. The homework is annoying and really doesn't help you learn anything. Grades on attendence. Some people in my class are obnoxious and talk throughout...he does NOTHING to get them to stop. He doesn't seem to be interested in getting to know his students a all.
everything you need to learn for the tests, you will need to teach yourself by reading the book! he only goes through tables and charts in the book and you have to read the chapter to understand the concepts. the tests are not difficult but cover about 3 chapters. the studys guides are a page front and back x 3 chapters but test is only 50 quest.
has 10 point video exams. easy. tests that are 50 questions have 300 questions worth of questions on study guide. 4 unit test total and a final. you basically learn only if you read the chapter and do the study guides which take you about 3 hours to finish. if you take him, you might as well take the class ONLINE! tests are not too difficult tho
He's a pretty smart guy. He knows what he is talking about. You have to do quit a bit of reading if you want to do good. He's kind of monotone. If psychology is your thing you'll like him.

I took this class over the summer. The main thing I noticed is he seems to take NO interest in his students. The tests were difficult, and he does not adequatly prepare you for them. The homework is usless and often unrelated to the topics discussed in class.
The lectures are pointless, but he takes attendance. In our row of 4 students we divided up the study guide questions and then emailed them to each other. Do this for every test and you will get an A with the curve. I spent the lecture answering the study guide questions, then studying once completed so I did have to study outside of class time.
In Psych 101, he gave us study guides. I recommend ignoring his lectures on the chapter and instead doing those study guides all the way through, IN DETAIL. His lectures are not enough for the tests. I got an A in the class just writing up the study guides and taking notes from the actual book.
soooo boring. the homework is easy but the tests can be tough because he goes through notes on a power point way too fast. i would suggest taking your own notes out of the book during class while he is speaking & just listen if he says "you will need to know this for the test" or something about homework bc he always changes the directions. This guy lectures about stuff that, for the most part, is not even on his tests. Just read the book and you will pass the tests. He also has these AV quizzes he gives the answers for the class before. Points deducted for absences. Very passable class just very boring. And if you ask a question you will feel belittled

He teaches things that aren't on the tests. His videos are older than he is. He gives really boring lectures, but is extremely knowledgable about what he teaches. He wrote the textvook, but DON'T BOTHER BUYING THE BOOK.
If you dont read the book you will not pass the class. Do the study guides and attend everyday he takes away valuable pints. If your not good at taking your own notes out of the book you will not pass.
Read the book and studied my butt off to pass. Tests are difficult and he is incredibly boring. Could have taught this stuff to myself and learned as much. Too many other cool psyc teachers to take besides this dude, wish I had known
Very Dry..Lectures way too fast - His overhead slides that he lectures on - he flipoo fas thru therm you cannot take notes. Have to memorize pschologist and what they are known for - gives 2 tests on the same day all the time. His grading system very confusing

Dont bother listening to the lectures, if you read the chapter and fill out the study guide you'll do great. also recommend splitting up unit study guides between classmates. I took the 6 week course and got a 96% doing this. I recommend taking a night class though.
Dr. Filak is a little boring but he knows exactly what he's talking about and is very helpful. He lectures and then shows a supplemental video. If you pay attention in class, take notes, do the readings, and fill out the study guide, you should have no problem getting a good grade. Basically act like a college student since that's what this is.
DOES NOT TEACH! straight up worse person to understand. he doesnt let you copy notes from off the overhead. You honestly can not understand ONE SINGLE thing he says. I have to teach myself all the material
Very smart guy but does not give you enough material to study for the test so you have to do that on your own if you want an A. Assignments are super easy but the tests are harder. He curves tests which is kinda nice but if you want that A, you have to be devoted.

I had him for Psych 101 on Mondays 1-3:50. He always gave us a break. He has a monotone voice. Do the homework, it's pretty easy and easy points. He has you take an AV exam and a regular exam. It helps if you took a Psychology class in high school like I did. I got an A in that class.
Super boring. He knows what he is talking about, but psychology should be an interesting topic and he sucks the life right out of it. He very monotone and it is all note taking and boring "film", as he would say. Avoid him if you want to stay up in class.
He laughs uncomfortably... Rants about modern technology... Everything is clear, and you KNOW what he likes. NOT afraid to call students out. He also works out. I was conflicted in my "hot" or "not" rating. Nicest guy you'll meet. Resembles a certain character from the Lovely Bones.

Hes very monotone. Jokes suck. His slides are useless, he puts a full page up, talks about it for 15 seconds then puts a picture of some dude up and talks about it forever. Tests are very hard. You have to buy a book with the home work. He is one of the most boring teackers out there. Dont recomend.

Extremely monotone and dry. His "lecture" style involves flipping through a slide quickly while assuring we would cover it in the film. He'll put a 40 minute film on that he relies on to give us all the information we skimmed over in the notes. Be prepared to teach yourself the material. His class isn't terribly hard, his teaching is nonexistent.

Dr. Filak is an extremely educated man. I went for extra help to office hours, asked questions, did the assignments, and read the chapters and got an A without a problem. I was in a 3 hour class and we always got a break halfway through. He does not spoon feed you the material on the test and he does hold his students accountable for reading.
He does not know how to teach what so ever. I would not recommend him to anyone.
Mr. Filak is very educated and it shows-if you pay attention during lecture, read and ask interesting questions, his answers usually pay off. If you read the entire chapter (and focus and absorb the reading), you can get an A on each test. Enjoy the class time but independent study is required. I like that he expects college-student effort.
This intro to psychology class was very interesting and spawned a new love for psychology for me. Homework is easy, discussions are easy and mostly opinion-based,but tests can be tough if you don't do the homework, or reading. If you miss something in a discussion,Dr. Filak will give you a tip and does so very kindly. I'd definitely take him again!
Test are extremely difficult. The homework is easy and assigned often which works towards your benefit considering it saves your grade. Lectures are very boring and not really helpful.
He starts off class with a lecture and power point and then there was a break and then watched a movie. I really wish he would've taken the time for class discussions and made study guides and actually reviewed our test's with us. He has you rewrite the questions and answers as a "test review". Honestly I regret taking his class.

He wasn't the best but not the worst. Exams were a bit difficult, he just zoomed through the powerpoints, didn't get much written. The exams weren't worth as much as i thought. Assignments are INCREDIBLY easy, basically copying from the workbook. If you take notes in class & from online quizzes, & do the short writing assignments, its an easy A.
If you love lectures you'll love his class. Majority of the class slept while others left during our break... he talks forever and even though he presents power-points they're not helpful. be prepared to teach yourself. (-:
I wish I looked him up before I took the class. He lectures the whole class and if you think you can take notes, think again. He purposefully does not give you time to take them. The quizzes he gives are nothing like the actual tests. PREPARE TO TEACH YOURSELF.
Professor Filak is very nice man, although sometimes he does go off topic. He also lectures majority of class, which makes it hard to stay awake. He does have a clear grading criteria, if you do the mindtap quizzes you'll pass the class. All and all, just keep up with the homework (mindtap quizzes) and reading and you'll pass the class.
He's super easy! Took him online for my first online class. He responds really fast to emails. He's also very understanding if you miss a quiz. Everything is online, you do use the textbook, however online version is easier to use. Quizzes and tests super easy! Everything else must be turned in on time. There are discussions that are easy as well.

We had class for 2 1/2 hours and he would only teach one section out of the entire chapter during class. The students had to teach the rest of the material to themselves. He wastes time showing pointless videos.

Prof. Filak is a really nice guy but his lectures can get a bit boring. He has great materials and everything he does is online. Pretty easy class and if you do all the small quizzes online then you should pass.
I took this class online and it was a easy A. As long as you do the objectives(require lengthy answers a min of 1,000 words), quizzes( up to 3 attempts and best grade is taken), and participate in the discussions you would get and A . Whenever I had a question he was pretty good with responding that day. It is a Psy class, a lot of reading
Hes make you turn in assignment every week including 15 question quizes every Sunday. Classes are long and boring. I had to buy a new book even though I already had one just so I could get the code on the back to do the 15 questions otherwise you fail the class. He does not prepare you for the exams.
Dr. Filak is a nice guy. He might have a dry sense of humor and speak in a monotone voice, but he is very nice. I took the 2.5 hr class one day a week and it was very long. As long as you show up, you get participation pts. Be prepared to read read read. But majority is common sense
There are really no surprises in this class. Everything is well laid out in the syllabus with open book quizzes each week and easy homework assignments discussed in class before they are due. Basically you just need to study for the exams and show up to class as it's part of your grade.
Not a bad professor. Easy to get a good grade as long as you do your work, like any other class.

Yeah hes a pretty nice guy, but not very personable, lectures were boring and in my opinion usless. After lecture hed usually play a video that wasnt much more interesting than the lecture. One good thing is if you follow the syllabus everything is laid out for you.
I would study hard for tests but would bomb them. As long as you do literally ALL of the writing assignments and do the online quizzes (get good grades on them) you will pass. Thats how i passed. His lectures are so boring and I havent learned anything from him. Take advantage of the test corrections! The same questions will be on the final!
Professor Filak has an absolutely amazing online Psychology 101 course. His syllabus and modules are so organized and clear compared to other online courses. Participation in the discussion boards with the other students is very important. Quizzes and exams are easy because you are able to use notes.
