easy tests if you go to class and study the practice midterms
keep up with the work and you'll be fine. greatest class i've ever taken
...take if if you can make a cardboard chair to withstand your weight.
good teacher not very good at helping everyone in class cardboard chair=fun/hard
Great guy, but does not help everyone in class, he definately has his favorites, tough grader, very fun and interesting class
Projects are VERY challenging and complex for a lower division class. On grading, he seems more picky about writings than the actual project esp group project. Challenging and interesting, but wouldn't reccomend if you don't like to get your hands dirty.
Fun assignments, but you have to make sure they are done flawlessly or he marks you down! He does have his favorites and doesnt accept late work willingly..
what a terrible teacher. art is subject to interpretation. he grades by his likes, and if he doesnt like it, you are screwed, no matter what any other person thinks about it, including other professors who commented that it is good work
Awesome class if you like art. Such a good teacher if you are willing to get your hands dirty and be really creativeon the projects. He expects a lot for a lower division class, but he is a great teacher and the projects are a blast. cardboard chairs!
Great teacher and craftsman. He does expect effort so if you want to float through, take someone else. Projects are fun and interesting. If you're a serious art student, I definitely recommend taking one of his classes.
quit possibly the worst thing to happen to art
No Comments
horrible teacher, picks favorites, very hard chair project, art is fun but not in this class.
all above negative comments...also, being a dedicated and prospering art student, i took his class. never listens to your questions/picks favorites in the clas, and only helps them, poor teaching skills/disillusioned view of art
Amazing. Hey i paid for this classand expect to be challenged. Why wouldanyone NOT want to work hard and be critiqued.
He only likes the girls, guys have it 20x harder. I'm not a slacker either. Projects are challenging, you do learn a lot but good grades require intense effort; too much work for a undergrad class. GIrls, sign up for him, especially if you're hot.
i took him for both arts. i learned so much from him. you will work in his class, his grading is clearly stated as far as what he expects. follow that and try to solve the problem creatively and you will be rewarded. talk to him, he likes that.

not necessarily difficult, but certainly time consuming. very good, understanding, and helpful teacher, if not honest. wants you to do well. you put in the effort, he will help you succeed.
after taking this class i knew what i wanted to do for a career. he gives good suggestions and his projects are thought provoking and require a time commitment. take this class if you think you may want to do anything 3D.
clear only in lectures. his favorites are definitely hot girls, so he gives them secret tips and leaves everyone else out to scramble. he likes to babble. his emails are helpful, not his workbook. generally a crap teacher. useful only if you talk to him. i could pull a better teacher out of my ass.
One of the worst teachers I've ever had. Will spend 30 mins helping one student, so if you don't suck up, you don't get help. Very VERY set in his ways. His assignments have to be done his way, with his materials-- no room for creativity. Took his class: got a D, took it again with a diff. teacher, got an A+. Avoid at all cost.
mr fobes was one of the best teachers ive ever had. his assignments are interesting and allow you to work with a variety of materials towards the end of the semester. hard to get his help at times, but when he does help he does all he can. i enjoyed the class.
Fobes is weird. His assignments can be boring but if you make an honest effort you'll get a good grade. He's more about theory and technique. If you want to make beautiful works of art you won't get to in his lower div. classes. You'll get to experiment and you might end up with one or two really cool pieces.
Totally agree with everyone below!!!! Totally picks favorites and spends up to 30 min with his favorites helping them out while the rest of the class just sits there and waits. Documentation is a joke and takes points off for the stupidest things. Dont take him !!!!!
He wears thick glasses that look expensive. I wonder if he drives a porche? Other than those observances I think he was kind of mean and biased. People who take this class... Kiss ass. If you don't like to or don't know how... you need to learn.
he was probably the worst art teacher I have ever had. he picks favorites. he isnt clear about what he wants out of a project and he has high expectations for it being a beginner class. I do not recommend taking fobes if you want to pass art103.
He's a really nice guy to talk to but I wouldn't want him as a teacher again. He tends to play favorites, and doesn't leave much room for creativity on his projects. If you don't follow his rules you'll get marked down. He kinda expects a lot from you even though it is basically a beginning art class.
One of my fave teachers! Assignments were unique & interesting. He lectures in begining of class & sticks around to offer help & answer any ?s if you ASK! He expects you to follow directions exactly as far as technique goes but gives room for creativity. Do NOT miss class. He takes roll & absences affect the grade on the project you were absent for
the class is great- and the guy is really cool. i am a c student and i got an A in his class. ask alot of questions and have a good time. you will learn tons. a really good tip is to actually interact with all the other students for assignments and ask him questions if you dont understand. you cant miss a class though
Mr Fobes is one of the chillest Professors I've ever taken. His class is not hard, just time consuming. There is no way for you to fail his class if you just put some effort. I was very hesitant on taking his class because I read some of the negative reviews here. He ended up being my favorite professor. P.S "YOU MUST ATTEND CLASS EVERY DAY"
For a beginning level art class, he has ridiculously high expectations. Picks favorites. If he doesn't like you, no matter how hard you try (or how little) or how often you go to class (or not), you will recieve the very same grade. Will tell you what direction to go with a piece, then deny his part in it when it doesn't turn out right.
You will learn a lot of stuff in his class but the projects are so time consuming. I spent more time working on his projects then ART100 and ART258 combined together. He has high expectations on projects. Half of the class is focus on color when it isn't even a painting class. You will be sick of painting. Don't take if you don't have time.

You will learn from him. However, he is rude, condescending, & arrogant. It's a very expensive & laboring class. He changes his mind frequently. He doesn't except medical excuses. Don't be tardy (may take role 5 mins early) & you MUST attend class. He does pick favorites (those who kiss ____). If you want to try this class JUST take this class.
His grading is so subjective and if your willing to suck up alot and show up every day then youll get a good grade...otherwise, its a struggle
the person below must have been a favorite and a brown noser... trust me. he isn't easy and he will only have a top five in the class. if you are up to the challenge. do it.
This is a difficult and time consuming class, but it will help you learn a lot about color. If you stay on his good side, Fobes can be really helpful with the projects because he will take time to talk to you and help you figure out what you need to do. I would recommend this class if you have the time and patience.
This professor likes to play favorites and spends most of the class work time talking to his favorites. He also judges your work based on what he believes is art and is very picky. Tests are pretty easy though. He doesn't leave a lot of the assignments open for your creativity because you must follow his instructions exactly to get a good grade.
I learned more in Mr. Fobes' class than any other studio art class I have taken combined. The projects are detailed and time consuming, but with this knowledge you are building a base for all your upper division classes. The section on color theory alone is worth the price of the class. Mr. Fobes expects you to act like a college student- surprise!
I had Fobes for ART 101 & 103. He is a great Art teacher. At times he can give directions too long but he is definitely thorough! I learned alot of great techniques from Fobes and improved my skills. GO TO CLASS, buy the book to take online quizzes, do your work!!!
Mr. Fobes isn't easy, but he's a GREAT teacher. I've learned more from him than any art teacher I've had so far. He expects a lot out of assignments, but if you pay attention, he'll also teach you a lot. He gives points for creativity, but won't give you an "A" just because you "tried." Your work has to live up to his rubric for that "A" grade!
took him for both 101 and 103. amazing teacher. You will learn a lot from his class. Hard grader but that's what makes it fun and interesting!! Projects are time consuming so as long as you know how to manage your time, you should be ok. Don't except to be pampered with good comments on your projects though because you'll have to earn it.
He is the worst teacher ever, the most unfair teacher i have ever had. no matter how hard you try it will never be enough .... do not take his class
Unless you are an AMAZING artist, don't take his class. He makes his students feel like they're not good enough if their projects are not up to his standards. He joked once about those not making it in art will be pumping gas for him and the other students who actually made it. What a way to degrade half of the students class. DON'T TAKE HIM
Like any art class, the projects take time and you have one about every weekend. But I learned a lot the second half of the semester with paint and color mixing. Very nice man! Likes to add you on his Facebook.
DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER! He's projects are incredibly time consuming and in the end you'll still get a C because it doesn't live up to his standards. Always says colors are too saturated or too desaturated. He's an impossible grader and honestly does have favorites in the class. If he doesn't like you he won't even bother helping you!
Took him for 101 and 103. I did well in both, but he honestly does have favorites. If he's not interested in your work, he won't help. Extremely hard grader. At the end of last semester, we were a week by the time we started the final project. We ended up rushing through it, with him bashing everyone during the final critique. Ask anyone- it was aw
Great teacher IF you are a favorite. I have learned soooo much from him and I highly recommend taking this class if you have prior experiance and are willing to work hard to earn your grade. an A is not impossible but requires a good amount of effort. Go to class.
101 he is an amazing professor!if you are trudly interested in learning, take his class.he doesnt pick favorites, the truth is hes not going to sit next to you and make conversation, you have to talk to him!he is very critical and is a hard greater but when you receive a compliment you know you have really earned it!a privilege to be his student.
Has favorites. He is extreamly helpful but makes you work your ass off. also the class is expensive as all hell. If he complements you you have truely earned it.
Mr. Fobes was the best Art teacher I've ever had. As a 4th year, I'm sad that I won't be able to take any more classes with him. He is tough, but if you really want to learn and grow as an artist, he is the teacher you are looking for. I'm not going to lie, he expects a lot from his students.. so there's no room for slacking off. GO TO CLASS
it's true how he chooses favorites, and i wasn't one of his. i actually slacked off the whole year but yet i managed to pull off a B. i can say that he is very doable but that's probably not the same for everyone.
we had to work really hard on everything just to get it unfairly graded. his criticisms were never aimed at improvement. the quizzes are pretty easy if you have the book, so that can save your grade if your not chosen to be a "favorite".
His class is hard, and of-course hard to get A, but it's not impossible to get A. I got A for the class, and I really enjoyed working with Mr Fobes. He is sooooooooooo friendly and nice. it has been 2 years after I tool his class but we're still friends. You wont regret taking his class. I have learned alot from him, and even after I passes his cla
Fobes class was painfully hard for me. It was grueling to say the least. That being said, he is the most awesome teacher I have ever had! I discovered a talent that I never knew I had thanks to him. As for him having favorites, go to class and work hard on your projects! He knows bull when he sees it and he doesn't tolerate it!
He is an awesome teacher in the art dept. I had had two classes from him about 3 years ago, he looked strict in advance and harsh when he was in class, but he was helpful when you were being serious and he helped to solve all of your question. He is a great teacher I never been in SDSU.
I loved MF! I had to take his class because of a mandatory requirement and had dreaded it immensely. Fobes made the class fun to go to and I ended up enjoying it and learning so much about design/color. Its a ton of useful work though, so DON'T SLACK OFF. He's an amazing artist himself, don't underestimate him, there's a lot you can learn from him!
Mister Fobes is a great Professor. He is funny and genuinely cares about your success in the class. If you slack off you will regret it because there is a lot of work. He pushes you to your max potential if you take the class seriously. You don't really need the book, the online quizzes are the only thing I used the book for.
Amazing Teacher!Mr. Fobes is really there to teach his students to become better artists. Not to mention he is also a very knowledgeable artist himself. He definitely deserves more recognition. I recommend him 100%
I LOVED this class. I was scared taking it at first but he ended up being my favorite instructor. I signed up for another of his classes this semester. He is really helpful, but you do have to work hard in the class. However, his teaching makes it fun to do the projects, if you naturally don't sleep much. ;)
don't take fobes. He has favorites and I felt like you had to be an amazing artist to get an A on anything or get help no matter how hard you tried. There is so much work there were times when I stayed up all night working on a project. He always talks negatively about his students from previous classes and I just think its very demeaning.
WORST teacher and class ever. If your an amazing artist you may do okay. He is moody talks bad about people and there is so much work no matter how hard you work you will get the same grade.
So, you're taking this class since you love art.. right? I took Fobes for 102 (2-D design) and already knew I loved the guy. He is very clear and if you're interested in what you're doing, he'll be interested in it too. Have passion for your work and show up to class to work on the projects, it's free time to work! I LOVE THIS PROFESSOR! HE ROCKS!
Mister Fobes is awesome! He's my favorite art professor yet. Easiest? No. But his class is fun and I always looked forward to going. Seriously, take his class, no slackers though. :)
Fobes is just great. his class can be super intimidating, and definitely difficult, but he makes it not so bad. he'll help you with pretty much anything you need help with whenever you need it; super available. hard grader so do your best on everything. but he's really great, so take this class!
Had him for ART101 as well which helped in learning his teaching style. NOT a good class if you don't want to come to class and don't want to be involved. Great class if you are motivated to do well and want to produce projects that are interesting, cool, and sometimes functional! Fobes is awesome and passionate about what he does. Great class!
Fobes is a nice guy, really makes an effort to help you out when you need it. Projects are hard and he expects a lot, perfection is mandatory to get an A. He's a good teacher, but I feel like his grading methods are a little harsh and a little unfair.
He is a tough teacher and I spent a ton of time on his projects, but I did learn a lot and he knows his stuff
Fobes is an awesome guy. Get to know him personally because he's a pretty awesome artist and very interesting. However! His class is by no means easy. He's almost never satisfied with your work and you'll be required to put A TON of time into this class in order to get a B. You can't miss class, EVER, and don't plan on getting an A if you'r late.
BEST ART TEACHER IVE HAD. he is super knowledgeable and down to help. people who say hes too hard either dont work hard enough, or dont have a strong interest in art (some people take this for fun). with that being said if youre just looking for a "funzy" art class, take drawing. if you want to LEARN and BETTER your artistic abilities, take fobes!
In the end, I liked what I learned from this class, but it was REALLY hard. I understand that he's trying to prepare students for future art classes, but he's not very helpful or clear. Students were constantly doing things wrong because of this and he's often rude when you ask for help. Attendance is MANDATORY. I've had better art professors.
Fobes is a very passionate professor, and he know's exactly what he want's from his students. This class is by no means easy, it's tough and you have to put in a lot of work. But if you're in class and take time to do your assignment, he will be good to you.
Fobes deserves more credit then he is given. Yes his class is difficult and he is picky about your work, but if you ask lots of questions, show enthusiasm, and put in a lot of effort you will enjoy his class. He really knows what he is taking about.
I did not like him AT ALL! Attendance is mandatory or you get marked down, he's picky so nothing is ever right, he doesn't answer questions directly he just dances around your question then your still confused, and majority of the stuff you do in class is a waste of 3 hours! I definitely don't recommend him!
Loves art and is there to help you improve skills and provokes creative thinking. He has a very high standard for his students which is absolutely necessary as an artist. Had him for 2 classes and he was fantastic! He also really works with you when it comes to deadlines and creative license when you reach out to him.
A lot of work, but well worth it.
If your not his favorite, you wont get help. And if you need help you have to constantly hunt him down. Basically you need to figure things out yourself-like how to wire a lamp. Also, if your style isn't HIS style and if your not one of the favs then your grade will not be as high. Good luck aspiring artists!
He knows what he wants and you won't do well if you try and cut corners. You better have a car for all the off campus extra credit and ASSIGNMENTS! Tough grader, very picky about what he wants but if you go to office hours he will help you A TON, extends deadlines and will change grades. Takes attendance for credit.
Professor Fobes will make you work hard for your grade, better have photoshop downloaded to your computer. He confuses students when he explains projects, and hes strict on attendance. However, if you ask for his help, only given during office hours, he tries to help you as much as possible.
He's a really good teacher if you go to him for assistance. He seems to really enjoy helping students succeed. Genuinely nice person and clearly has a passion for art. Best art teacher I have had yet. However, you have to work hard in his class to get an A, but its worth it. I've learned so much about design, art, and myself through his classroom.
BEST PROF EVER. Took Fobes for Art 103/104 and wish I could take more. He is well known in the SD art scene. He was the art advisor so he knows his stuff. In Art 103, DO SOMETHING BIG/CRAZY/REVOLUTIONARY. He will 98% be down for it and help you with every step. Meet with him, show you're a hardworker, get on his good side, and he will love you.
If it's avoidable, don't take classes from this professor. It is very difficult to receive any help from him, and he expects students to read his mind on what he wants from a project. He doesn't explain projects clearly and can be very discouraging towards individual ideas/innovation. (The opposite of what an art professor should be) Don't take him
Mr. Fobes really cares about his students and will do as much as he can to help them get the grade they want. He is VERY accessible outside of class and willing to help students extensively on their projects. This course does, however, require a lot of work and time outside of class. It is also very easy to fall behind in this class.
This class was really interesting and good to take if you want to learn about how artists become successful in the real world. Fobes was a great teacher and made all of the assignments very clear. There was a little bit of busy work but I never worried about my grade in this class. Recommend for art lovers.
3 projects + a group project. This guy is super nice and responds to emails fast. Sometimes his grading is confusing. You have to use blackboard a lot to do "journal entries" to document how you did your project. He uses coursekey to give quizzes on readings he gives and to take attendance.
Honestly, this class is a tough one to get into for me, meaning it's super boring. The lectures are dry and guest speakers kinda keep saying the same thing so it gets boring after the first few. He does make some good jokes every now and then during lectures so enjoy them when they actually happen.
One of the meanest humans I've ever interacted with. You could spend days and hours on a project you're so proud of but he is so picky that it is all wrong to him. He is good at making you feel guilty or just bad in general. He tears you down just to say "I'm only doing this because it's the real world." He's extremely rude. I don't recommend.
Check your email and BB often because most assignments, updates, and extra credit opportunities will be posted every week. Clear guidelines to all assignments and he responds fast to emails. Three journals, weekly course key quizzes and speakers, a research assignment/presentation, and a paper. Fairly easy course.
I was so disappointed by this professor. The projects assigned were interesting, but he doesn't allow for any creativity. Projects were assigned with vague instructions and then critiqued based on very specific rules that were not mentioned when the project was assigned. Critiques were rich with criticism, but not the helpful constructive kind.
Amazing professor! This is my third and last semester with Mr. Fobes and I'm a little bummed to not have him for future courses. He's wonderful with making time with students but is not a mind reader. If you're struggling you have to search him out. He's a working artist but will always make time for his students! Love This Guy!!! Learned so much!
Mr. Fobes is a great teacher!!! ART104 is a good class for those interested in how to make it as a creative professional. Working artists are invited to give talks to the class then we write lengthy journals on the talks. Quizzes are open book and you can talk to your neighbors. Lots of extra credit opportunities. Easy group project at the end.
He brings in professional artists and they give you tips on how to make it in the art scene. You have to respond to the the speakers in three lecture journals (essays). It got a bit repetitive by the end, but it was overall a fun class.
Fobes is seriously an amazing teacher. He's also an art advisor so he knows what he's doing and what he's talking about. He's very attentive and will help you out a ton during his office hours. I learned a lot in this class, and although it was repetitive at some points, I think it was really helpful in the long run. I'd highly recommend him!
He is amazing, I was so worried when I first take his class because other people said hes tough but he isnt. As long as you come to class, do all the work, then youll be fine. People who always complain about him, they didnt do work tho. If you lost, then he will have video online that created by him for you to follow step by step! TAKE HIM!!
This was a fun class, he was very passionate about what we could learn from the speakers, and I did learn a lot that will probably be useful when I'm going into work. Had to do write ups about most guest speakers and a couple other projects but they were all relatively easy. You can't write about a speaker you didn't come to class for so go.
This class was really fun, and he was very understanding of how much time we needed on projects and made adjustments for this. As long as you finish the journals as he expects you'll do well.
I like Fobes as a person, but if you miss one class for any reason, even being sick, it will make your grade drop almost an entire letter. He is strict but the class is manageable and the lectures can be interesting.
ART101 fun class, both digital projects and analog projects, buy kit that he suggests (it's helpful), do your work on time, ask him questions!
Pretty rude dude who acts innapropriately with female students. Feedback wasn't constructive, he either liked it or didn't but wasn't very helpful telling you how to fix something. Heavy favoritism, would give A's to girls who put zero effort into their projects but gave low grades to those he rated as "a plus work" during class critiques.
Attendance is taken at the beginning and end of class, and he rarely cancels class. The course requires a lot of outside classwork and if you put in enough hours, it pays off. Fobes is passionate about teaching art, although he sometimes taches a little too fast. Making friends in the class will definitely help any confusion!
I have not had any issues with him. He is great! He seems to care and gives good feedback in my opinion. It was a very easy class for me, but I recommend to put in effort in your work.
The hardest part was how late the class met, as it sometimes seemed to drag on forever. Journals tend to get repetitive and many students do not take the lectures seriously. Fobes is very passionate about the course and gives a clear rubric for grading.
