Fun, interesting discussions in class. Good guy.
awesome, i am an EE major and his was the best class that i ever had
No Comments
smart guy. It helps you alot if you are a good writer. Need more profs like him here at rutgers
what a teacher should be. he's demanding, but fair. tough on attendance, and a lot of readings, but a fantastic teacher. lectures are extremly interesting, you'll actually want to go to class, which had never happened for me before. a good guy.
Greatest professor i have ever had here at rutgers. i would recommend all three of his classes and whatever seminar he teaches. glad to have him write my recommendation 4 grad school
good class, good guy, most important things you need to know for exams are the things he tells you in lecture, if u dont go to class realy awesome notes are at firstclass
Great teacher. Good lecturer. He is very organized as well. he will never try to belittle students and he is a nice guy. Take a class with him
Nice guy, generous grader. Lectures are interesting, and worth going to (and attendance is counted). Very few assignments other than reading.
Great professor, my favorite as a history major at RU. One of the nicest, most patient people you will ever meet, a great lecturer and mentor. Always fair and respects all opinions.
One of the best teachers I've ever had. Couldn't prepare you enough for the midterm and final. Highly recommend him.
Excellent professor, lots of reading but its enjoyable and only 1 exam and 3 essays for ForPol 1898. Great guy overall.
Foglesong requires a lot of reading (especially for the seminar) but it's worth it. He seeks participation in his classes and he never makes a student feel dumb when they give a wrong answer. I really liked being in his classes because he's approachable, fair, and demanding.
awesome teacher, definately knows his stuff. seems like an easy grader. keeps attendence, but pay attention and it's easy B
Great teacher. Very interesting. Knows his subject extremely well. A mid-term and 3 papers. Reading can be tedious, but I definately recommend him!
A very straightforward class. If you do the stuff it is a relatively easy course. Prof Foglesong really knows A LOT of stuff, and seems to have answers to everything relavent to the class. He is not an amazing prof in the sense that he is funny, but he is really good because his teaching is so clear
Great Class. A wonderful professor. alot of reading, but this is true of all history classes. clear requirements.
just finished my second class with him. i would take any class that he offered. there are no surprises, he grades fairly and gives constructive criticism on essays, and your answers in class are never "wrong". he is everything a professor should be. essays have never been so un-scary. ...just save enough for books.
Go to class and its easy
I needed history classes to supplement my poli sci major and this one fit into my program. He looks at things objectively, does not force a point of view or philosophy on you. Used different media to make it come alive. Not bad looking for an old short guy. ;-)
Great professor but watch attendance. I got all A's and he gave me a b+ final grade. Study for tests youre good.
this class only has 3 papers...attendence is required but has no bearing on how you will do on your paper..hes interesting..filled with info and a fair grader...very insightful and not a jerk
I started this class knowing nothing, wrote 2 of the papers still knowing nothing, and I'm (so far) getting a B. Very approachable and fair guy. Don't be fooled into thinking he's the devil because of the huge amounts of readings he assigns.
Fogle kicks ass!very kind and helpful man. extremley detailed and clear lectures, you will come out an expert on the subject.excellent analysis, fascinating indepth coverage,a model history professor.
Finished 3 classes with him over the last year. Definitely the best professor I have ever had. I look foward to taking more classes with him. You learn a lot from the books and his clear lectures. Extremely fair and a great guy. Highly recommend taking his classes.
Great class, great prof. The readings get to be a bit tedious, but I didn't have much trouble skipping one or two, (or three...). Great guy, very easy to talk to, really gets students involved in the class. Obviously cares about the topic and the students.
His lectures are amazing structured and he gives detailed info without rambling and going on tangents. He just gives papers so mostly have to do the readings that pertain to your papers. He also shows some worthwhile movies. I've taken two classes with him and am going to take a third in the fall.
Excellent prof! informative, lucid, well organized lectures, maybe a tad aloof, but helpful, completely reasonable with grading and incredibly knowledgeable, a true expert in his field . leaned a lot in his class. Svaner is an very helpful TA, an extra bonus. Anyone interested in American, Russian relations should take this class.
The guy is brilliant... He knows absolutely everything, and teaches very effectively. His grading is hard, and the TA has too much power in the outcome of the grade. I recommend taking his class, but be prepared to work very hard. Also come to the classes because they are mandatory.
He knows everything you could possibly ask him about the Cold War. Entertaining lecturer. Most of the assigned readings can be skipped with no negative repercussions. Inconsistent grading though... I got a C+ on the first essay and an A on the second essay, and I thought there wasn't much of a difference in quality between them.
excellent teacher. i love this guy! he really knows his stuff, and he's a very good lecturer. it's easy to pay attention in his class. just make sure you start defining your midterm and final exam IDs as soon as you learn them. IT SAVES A LOT OF TIME.
A bit overrated here but a decent professor overall. his lectures could be boring and he moved too fast. he presented every viewpoint but never gave his opinion which was weird. easy grader. exams take forever to study for but are easy with the review sheets. discussion sections were pointless. was a bit intimidating to talk to alone. very smart.
Professor Foglesong is as smart as they come. He knows everything about history and makes it interesting to learn and easy to understand. This class is a lot of work, but it is doable. Highly recommended!
Eh, I thought the class was just ok. No doubt he's super smart + knows anything/everything on the Cold War/Russian history. But I found him boring at times and that he couldn't relay the info in class well. The reading gets annoying. I thought the essays were hard, but they're doable + they pretty much = ur grade.
i was really nervous registering for an honors course with him, but i learned SO much and he was very helpful/organized, recommended
Cold War class was pretty boring, but the class is not too hard. 2 essays plus an in class final = your grade
Hands down my favorite professor at Rutgers. His lectures are well-structured and fun to listen to if you are interested in the subject matter. He's also really nice and makes an effort to know all of his students by face and name. He's a fair grader and spends a lot of time on each paper he reads (I spied on him grading a paper once lol). TAKE HIM

Great Professor. 2 five page papers, midterm, and final- lots of reading as well. He gives you a sheet of possible ID's before the tests, but on the exam, you have to answer 10 of 12. Overall, the class isn't too bad. If you want an A, do all the required readings and prepare for the ID's
He is a great professor to have for any class. Exams are all identification where you answer 10 out of 12, not a big deal. You can learn alot from him if you pay attention. A paper or two is required for some courses that he teaches but again not a big deal. Keep an eye out for Foglesong.
At first I hated this class, but by the end it was my favorite of the semester. He def knows his stuff and tries very hard to make sure you do too. Read for the essays (which is a lottt of reading) and it's an easy B+ or A. Overall, I would definitely take another class with Prof. Foglesong.
He was really intimidating in the class and the class was a little boring in the beginning but it got much better as class continued. The class is made up of two papers and a 10 ID in class exam. If you wanna do good, do the readings even if its a lot. He himself is a good lecturer and was interested in the topic. Overall, I enjoyed the class.
Great Professor. Very knowledgeable and lectures very effectively, answers students questions completely unlike some teachers. You will have to put in some work for the two papers and final exam (do the readings) but if you want to do well the material is straightforward and the teacher is very helpful. Great class overall
Prof. Foglesong is THE best professor at this University. His knowledge of subject matter is endless. Great guy and actually WANTS to help you. Always avail for office hours. Very engaging and uses a plethora of materials(readings, books, films) This is my 2nd class with him and would take more. Leaves nothing out and clearly sets his expectations.
Such as good professor!! Really knows a lot about his subject and shows it in his lectures. He tries to incorporate visuals (art, movies etc) into the lecture to make it easier. 3 7-8 page papers and that's it. You WILL need the books and you will have to read to pass. Not the easiest class but def one of the more informative.
One of Rutgers' great professors. He definitely knows his stuff and does an excellent job teaching it. He is extremely strict about attendance but once you get to know him he's a sweetheart. Examines all sides of issues but lets you know his opinion. He is truly dedicated to helping students learn, rather than a spewer of info. Take him.
Great Professor, the lectures are all power point and he loves questions. Very approachable if you need something, his classes are very book heavy and you have to read to pass the papers. 3 (5-7) page papers and a final. Recommend Foglesong if you like history of any cold war subject.
Foglesong requires attendance and sets the bar very high in terms of workload and expectations but not in difficulty. he's also interesting and teaches effectively, and you'll learn quite a lot. if you show up and do the work you'll be fine with an easy B or higher, if not you're beat and will have a hard time passing. definitely recommend
Wanted to take him this spring. This class is overwhelming at first. Mandatory attendance and 2 7-8 page papers and an optional final paper or in class ID final. Lots of books that are quasi-exspensive. Read them and you'll pass. Powerpoints online to help you. Lots of films and gives you an easy day papers are due. GREATEST. PROFESSOR. EVER.
I'm a science major and don't like history, but the class was very interesting. When you leave the class you will have such a better understanding of the cold war. The readings are heavy if you have a busy schedule. But if you love history & like reading, this is good for you. Great teacher, very knowledgeable! Go to his lectures & participate! (:
One of the best lecturers I've ever had (granted I'm pretty interested in the subject). Fantastic professor who knows a ton about the topic and is able to keep it interesting the whole time. Grades were three 5-7 page essays and a small final, and he's very fair with grading. If you want/need to take a history class for any reason, take this guy
One of the best professors I've had while at Rutgers. Is always prepared for class and knows how to properly deliver a lecture. Occasionally changes it up and shows documentaries and movies from the era. His assignments arent too difficult assuming you pay attention in class and take good notes. Its a big class, but the Prof. tries to form bonds
My third course with Professor Foglesong. My favorite Rutgers professor. Highly recommend taking him for any course- usually 3 5-6 page papers that aren't graded too toughly plus an ID exam.
Foglesong is one of the smartest professors in the history department. Every student should take at least one of his classes.
My absolute favorite professor. As long as you show up to lecture and read what's required you should be fine. He is a pretty fair grader when it comes to the essays, and the final exam is easy. He knows so much about the subject and is really good about helping all the students. I definitely recommend this class.
I took the class, US History 1914-1945. He lectured on and on about politics at the time and through every confusing political term in the book at us during the lectures, which consisted of deciphering political cartoons 80% of the time. We had t do 6 essays and the essay questions were confusing and lengthy. Grading of the essays was really harsh.
Prof Foglesong is one of the most knowledgeable educators I've ever met. He is always very well prepared. He encourages healthy debate in his class. There is a LOT of reading required but I'm a history nerd so it was interesting reading. (Be prepared to read about 100+ pages per week) 3 papers and 1 exam. Not the hardest class but not the easiest.
I'm not sure how anyone didn't get an A in this class. Never did the reading, except when I had to skim certain chapters to write short papers. Those papers simply regurgitated the lecture material with several citations and got A's. No final, no midterm. Really nice guy too.
Fogelsong's History of the Cold War was probably the best class I took at Rutgers. I studied political science and economics, but the subject sounded interesting so I signed up on a whim, and I do not regret it. Despite the uncomfortably tight seating arrangement in Van Dyke Hall, the lectures offered a remarkable perspective of the Cold War.
Prof. Foglesong is one of the best professors I've had at Rutgers. The class was made up of three 5-page papers and a final exam. Be prepared to read 100+ pages a week, an impossible task. But just do the best you can because taking his class is a MUST. If you do what you have to, you can easily get an A.
Extremely boring lectures. He requires that you sign in every day, so if you like to skip class don't take this class. He shows movies half of the time. All you have to do is hand in 5 short papers on assigned reading, and a final, so as long as you keep up with work, there is no reason not to get an A.
The lectures are awesome. He is an outstanding lecturer and knows everything there is about the Cold War. Uses a ton of cartoons to illustrate his points. Attendance required and more than 3 misses and you lose 2% of grade. Tons of reading, 300pgs/week. Impossible to keep up with. Papers aren't hard but do your reading for them. He knows.
You do need to go to class (attendance matters) and if you don't read the assigned 400 pages a week, you MUST use them in your 3 papers (5-7 pgs each). Gives an ID midterm and 2 easy in class writings on terms. He's an easy grader. He wants you to succeed and even though his lectures are long, you'll learn a lot. This man is absolutely brilliant.
The man does not care about anything but what you put on a paper. He doesnt care if you were sick for a week throwing your guts up. Avoid him, there are nicer and easier professors in the department. I got a B+ but i worked my ass off and it didnt even matter to him how much i tried or even how many hours of work i put in.
Great professor. He doesn't just teach an event, he also teaches the different interpretations of the event, and more importantly, doesn't make it sound boring. Also likes to mix it up with some videos, and also offers optional readings if you're especially curious about a certain subject.
Honestly extremely rude. I went for extra help about my essay and he said the term "i don't care if you dont think so , im not going to fight with you on this". He lectures right in your face making direct eye contact. Do not take. There are so many nicer and easier professors in the history department.
Foglesong makes you purchase 6 books for his class, only 3 papers and a final, but he expects you to read about 500 pages a week. Funny thing is if you dont you truly fall behind. He also plays Russian films that dont relate to the essay questions. Avoid at all costs I beg of you. he grades rather rough too and its a pain to sit through his class
i love to read, but he expects you to read over 500 pages a week. he actually expects this. Hes very rude to students and he really needs to be evaluated by the board. way to old school for modern day college, stay away from this man if you can, youll be bored, over worked, and under graded.
very passionate and kind man, but SO reading heavy, 100+ pages per week :/ I personally didn't do much of the readings and somehow still finessed on my essays with A's but he's a somewhat easy grader for papers imo. Haven't taken the final yet but its only 10 identifications!
He's nice but expects a lot of reading. However, I didn't read much but still get B+ or above in the papers. The final is very simple compares to other professors, only 10 IDS and count as 10% of your final grade. So take him if you want to learn the history about Russia.
What a gem. Had him for Russia in War and Peace and although I was quite literally buried in reading all semester, he was a very fair grader with papers and was truly very nice. His lectures are interesting and he's super passionate! Small setting class but you get individual attention.
Fantastic. I took him for America, Russia, and the Cold War and he truly engages his students and is passionate about the material. Expect anywhere from 50-250 pages of assigned reading per class, and while it isn't absolutely necessary for lecture, you need it for the papers. Challenging but not impossible. Don't be afraid to participate either.
I had zero interest in the Cold War until I took this class. There is A LOT of reading, but if you plan out your essays and skim read and highlight main ideas you will be fine! There is only one exam with 10 IDs which is pretty easy if you study the list he gives you. Hes super funny, and obviously very passionate and knowledgeable!
I took Dr. Foglesong's History Seminar class in the Fall of 2017. We had to write an original research paper of 20 to 30 pages. Dr. Foglesong does have high expectations, but he is very helpful and gives invaluable feedback. He helps you become a better writer and thinker. Great professor.
Dr. Foglesong class on the Cold War is amazing. He known's everything there is to know about the Cold War. His lectures and readings were great. Grades were, attendance, Three, 5-6 page papers, and a in class mid term exam. He gives detailed feedback on your papers and helps you become a better writer.
Dr. Foglesong's class on America Foreign relations is great. It traces American history from 1898 to the present. Lectures were great and informative. Grades were, attendance, three 5-6 page papers, and an in class, mid term exam. Great professor and great class.
I have yet to come across a professor at Rutgers more engaging, brilliant and inspiring as Dr. Foglesong. His lectures are a treat, especially if you're into the subject. He encourages class discussions and invokes thought. He's a tough grader, and has a specific way he wants papers written. Do yourself a favor and take one of his classes.
It's difficult to take notes for his lectures cause he uses images mostly. Make sure to take great notes cause they will come in handy for the papers. He is a passionate speaker and cares that his students learn the material. I rarely participated in class, handed a paper in a week late, and still got a high B+. Put in the work and it's an easy A
Professor Foglesong is a great professor with great and interesting lectures... BUT when it comes to writing essays, it's tough. He is a tough grader and will knit-pick your essays. However, whatever feedback he gives you is really helpful. He is overall a great guy.
Great professor with great lectures. Lectures can get boring sometimes, but it's whatever. He is a tough grader, when it comes to grading essays, but his feedback is really useful, plus he answers your emails relatively quick.
Very intelligent man, his library of knowledge is so vast. He is a tough grader but he makes you into a better writer. He is also an understanding individual. We need more people in the world who care about history/politics/ etc as much as him
Probably my fav professor so far at Rutgers. Super knowledgeable, yet isn't too hard on grading. There is a ton of assigned reading, but should be a very easy A if you read part of the assigned readings.
took both 512:352 and 354, enjoyed both immensely. he assigns a lot of reading, but you don't really need to read it any more than what you need for the papers. grades fairly, highly recommend.
It was my first time taking Prof. Foglesong and I thoroughly enjoyed his class! His choice of books, the lectures and the way he interacts with a student is something I envy about him. Class consisted of 4 essays no midterm or final, if you participate he raises your final grade. Foreign policy course was enjoyable because of Prof. Foglesong
He is an amazing professor, is so knowledgable, and has lots of experience. I appreciate how he was able to challenge popular beliefs on this topic, which made me learn a lot. There is a lot of reading, but it's manageable. He is very helpful when writing the 3 essays, and provides lots of feedback. I would definitely take another class with him!
Russia in War and Peace was the best class I've taken at Rutgers so far. There's a lot of reading, but I found it all to be really interesting so it wasn't too bad. 4 essays (3 shorter ones and a final) for your grade, and he always offers to check your outline before you write it and gives good feedback after. Lectures are really interesting too.
He's a great professor who is highly knowledgeable. The only issue is that it's difficult to learn every single detail about events and in between.. especially with other courses. 4 essays aren't bad until you realize his grades are based on how much information you know. Do not take unless you LOVE history and don't mind less than an A.
Professor Foglesong is one of the most passionate teachers I've had so far. His lectures are entertaining (if Cold War history is interesting to you). The readings and essays require engagement with a variety of sources from different historical schools. Because of this, this class will prepare you for writing contemporary history in the future.
Professor Foglesong is great. He gives really good lectures and is a fair grader, the only thing you have to watch out for is a lot of reading depending on the course. He's also super passionate about his topic and always is happy to help when someone wants to learn more. Really nice guy, I've taken two classes with him and can't recommend enough.
Super nice, passionate, & understanding, his lectures are heavy, a lot of information to process. Assigns multiple long readings per class and doesn't really discuss the readings. No assignments, only 4, 5-6 page papers, I would not recommend taking 2 of his classes at the same time as you'll end up doing back to back papers with lots of reading.
I respect Professor Foglesong for his vast knowledge and passion for the subject, but he does have very high expectations. He assigns lots of reading and complicated essay prompts, and he expects quality participation. If you like the subject and are ready for the commitment, you will learn a lot from his class, but be prepared to put in the work.
