David Foltz's class was a total waste of my life. I'm pretty sure we just had class just to have it. He's also really strict with absences. I missed 5 classes. I had an A and it went down to a D just cause i missed a pointless class. Plus david is an a**hole. He's really sarcastic and thinks he is amazing. Don't take from him.
This is a basic level english requirement for every freshman to take. David is under the assumption that this is LIT 409 or some high level class. In his words "An 'A' is worth a lot more in my class." You will not get an "A" in this class no matter how much effort you put in.
very very hard. english 103 is supposed to be an easy class and he makes it much much more complicated. if you dont participate in class you will get a c. he acts like it is a high level course and does not ever ever ever grade for good effort, only on really hard things. and i have a 4.0- before his class....
This guy sucks do not take him. Hes cocky as**** and thinks hes always right. Treats fresman english like grad school. Oh, and if your in the greek system, he hates that too.
Do not take at all costs. he is cocky and arrogant. he talks about professionalism in emails, yet addresses the class as "kids", which has never once happened to me even by the most respectable professors. he is maybe 25, yet is always trying to come across as older. He gives you no feedback, therefore making it impossible to improve your grade
He is the most pretentious, arrogant teacher I've ever had. At only 24 years of age, he insists that his students refer to him as "Mr. Foltz", all the while referring to us as "Kids" in the headings of his emails. His arrogance is to such an extreme that, more than likely, he is the only living man who could make a 100 on all of his assignments.
The most arrogant guy I have ever met. He actually made us read an article entitled "An A for effort? Not in my class." It is so ridiculous that he made this English 103 freshman gen ed class what he did. He is completely full of himself. He makes you doubt every aspect of what writing skills you "thought" you possessed.
David Foltz is the worst teacher I have ever had. To him, english 103 was a graduate level class. What really irritated me about him was how he refers to everyone as "kids" when in reality, he's just a few years older. Thinks he's the English God. DO NOT TAKE HIM, especially if you expect an A, regardless of how hard you work.
David Foltz is all about participation. Most of the students grades dropped towards the final paper. I didnt worry too much about it and was assuming to take my C and forget all about ENGL 103. I turned in a half-a**ed paper, expected the worst, got a good enough grade to finish with a B. Arrogant at times, always there when needed. Sweater-vests.
David Foltz is the worst teacher I have ever had!! Not only is he arrogant, but he never grades papers on time, and thinks that his intro English class is the equivalent of a graduate level course. He's VERY arrogant and pompous...try to avoid him at all costs!!!
I am over 30 Mr. Foltz (probably older than you) and I know you are a good teacher. But you could be better, not just teacher but person, without that unnecessary callousness. With all my life experience you managed to almost break me, be fair with fellows in their 20's.
Ugh! I can't stand him, his questions don't make any sense, he's always late for his morning classes and he has a smart mouth! Do not take him ever!!
This class is extremely difficult and you will have to put some effort into making an A, but overall I like it. If you're interested in the subject, he gives interesting insight about it. Is a little arrogant but funny. Also has trouble making his early classes on time.
He takes class seriously. Come prepared to do work, especially at a high level. He expects a lot out of the students. He is terrible at getting grades out to let you know how you are doing. Due dates are always changing, which can be frustrating. I enjoy the material, but take the class with caution, you will work you a** for for a B.
Prof Foltz is a good teacher if you are willing to participate and come to class. I got an A in the class because I was willing to learn and apply what I learned to the assignments. I don't agree with the other ratings. Prof Foltz is sarcastic but he is not intending to be malicious. Overall if you come to class and show improvements you'll do fine
He's a good teacher but you better be ready to work and participate. He expects a lot from everyone. The class starts out really hard since he wants people to drop to cut down the class size. It get's easier throughout though. He doesn't keep the grades updated which is annoying. If you actually want to learn, he's a good teacher.
Very difficult professor but he is always available for help. Take him if you want to learn about literature, do not take him if you want a GPA booster.
This teacher thinks he is Gods gift to the Earth. His arrogance far precedes his intelligence on the subject and seems like he takes pleasure in failing students. If you want to learn about literature he will teach it to you for the price of your grades. You would be better off teaching it to yourself.
He expects a lot from you. The only exams are mid term and final. Both are short answer/essay and very detailed. You pretty much have to read his mind to figure out what he is going to ask. He is never in class on time. You will not get grades back in a timely fashion. Did an essay and he just put a grade at the top, no reasons for the grade at all
I actually like Foltz. yes, he's a really difficult teacher, but you're at college to learn and this class will challenge your opinions to the core. So worth it. Pay attention, come to class, and participate. Be up to the challenge.
Difficult professor but was always available if you needed help.
Had some of the most interesting discussions in this class. It's not terribly difficult if you actually read what you're assigned and pay attention in class. I thought he was an excellent teacher.
If you don't want to do a lot of reading, and are more interested in in-depth discussions, then Foltz is a good choice. While he never assigns a lot of reading be prepared to discuss the readings a lot deeper than your typical 200 level english course. He is not an easy teacher, and my class got way off schedule. Would take this course again.
Fascinating and enlightening class discussions. Class was not easy, but I grew a lot as a writer and thinker. Very rewarding if you put in the effort throughout the semester. He is clear about his expectations and is very fair to his students. I wouldn't have wanted to take this course with any other professor.
His class is very enlightening and rewarding if you put the effort in and want to improve your reading and writing skills. If you are interesting in learning a lot about your abilities as a reader and writer then I highly recommend this class. The grade you get is the grade you earn, and he helps you as much as you'd like.
Fantastic class. Foltz is so smart. Demands a lot. I like that. He does not like morning class. Great literature choices.
I was making a B in the class all semester until the very end, I visited his office about 5 time in the last two weeks and he game me an A. The tests have an essay, and his papers are hard to understand. But visiting his office really helps a lot.
helpful if you go to him and ask specific questions but you have to earn your grade!
He's not the easiest professor to get in contact with, but he does the best to keep in touch with his students through his office hours. I Had an 8 am class and as terrible as those are, this one was not too bad. The class consists mostly of discussion of the reading which are pretty interesting if you take the half hour to read whats required.
HE was great! entertaining and engaging with the class. The tests had essays, i visited his office a lot near the end of the semester which helped my grade a lot i think. He tried to help his students, so if you're not doing as well as you would like to just go visit his office and just talk to him, it will help.
LOVED FOLTZ :)
most boring class ever. DO NOT TAKE
This is the type of class that is hard, and its difficult to see what you can do to improve. Very smart teacher, but sometimes he goes so in depth that I can't follow what he is talking about. Grades heavily on class discussion. Do not take if you want an easy class, however there is little reading for homework, compared to other English classes.
He is ridiculously hard. His pop quizzes will ruin your grade, so you have to keep up with the reading. Your paper is worth 45% of your grade, so you better do well. I had never gotten a grade lower than a B in English in my life before taking this class.
Mr. Foltz is the professor that you take to learn, not to get a grade from. High level thinking, participation, and hard work are required to be successful. Office hours are the guaranteed difference between good grades and bad ones. Put time into the class, listen to his advice, and ask questions all the time.
Dr. Foltz is a difficult teacher. He takes his gen ed class way to seriously. You have to keep up with the readings or you will fail all of his pop quizzes and exams. He is really strict on grading and class participation. If you do not talk during class he will give you a F for participation. I do not recommend this teach to anyone who wants an A
Do not take him!!!! His class is ridiculously hard for a English class, and one that's a gen ed at that. He has a great personality, but if you want to take a class where a single paper is worth 45% of your final grade, then he is for you. I'm a science major, and his class was the most stressful out of that entire semester
Professor Foltz is a nice enough guy as a person but as a professor, he likes to make things harder than they need to be. He tries to sound smart and ends up confusing the class and not making any sense. There were few grades for the class and he grades hard. I do not recommend him.
Foltz is a great guy and a good teacher if you enjoy literature. His class is challenging, but if you read you will do very well. Not very much writing in the class save the exams. Make sure you participate in the class and speak up, he grades harshly on participation.
In-class discussions are intriguing and fast-paced but 1 paper, a midterm, a final, and difficult pop quizzes are what make up your grade. Foltz wants his class to be his students' top priority, which is not the case when you teach a gen ed. Reading load is not heavy but be prepared to discuss things extremely in depth.
Do not take! It was the most difficult class I took this semester and I'm an engineering major
Avoid if at all possible!!! Foltz makes this class way more intense and rigorous than it needs to be for a GenEd credit. Try and get another teacher if you absolutely have to take a lit class
Do not take this class if you are expecting just an easy Gen Ed English. Expect in class discussions heavy on the language of the text and quizzes that expect you to have actually read the material for some reason. Foltz is clearly passionate about the literature he is teaching but he also gets not everyone else is. Use his office hours!
The reading load is not heavy, but discussion in class is, which is nice. Your grade rides MAJORLY on a final paper you have to write that you have to write on top of taking a final the same week. He takes his class too seriously for a gen ed but he's understanding if you talk to him and willing to help out.
Foltz is pretty brilliant when it comes to textual analysis. He makes great points that are always useful in writing essays and studying for tests. He expects a lot from his students, but he understands everyone's needs. Utilize his office hours and he will lay the world at your feet. Don't be misled by the difficulty; best class I ever took.
This guys will load u with tons of works u better take some other class rather than taking his class. Very few people score A n B in is class, other get C or D. I will recommend to drop this course if u have already registered for his course.
I loved this class. I wish he taught something else so I could take it. Read the most amazing stuff.
Don't be intimidated by the level of difficulty for his courses he is an amazing teacher and will always help you as long as you ask. he is a tough teacher and you do read a lot of material in his class but the discussions are great not like any other class
My god his class was absolutely amazing. This guy is really passionate about brit lit and you get really in depth with each storypoem you read. I learned a ton. He's really big on participation and your main worry is the big paper at the end. I think he's a pretty easy grader. I talked 0-1 times and did okay on the paper and came out with a B+.
I enjoyed his class and he genuinely cares about the students. He is a tough grader for participation and material, but I had this class as an 8am and enjoyed it. Not an easy Gen Ed.
Participation is literally the most important thing in his class. The exams make you recreate class discussions so make sure you take good notes. Don't skip. He is brilliant, but he expects a lot from his students in class and out of class. Keep up with the reading. His quizzes are not as easy as he says, read closely!
Foltz like to talk... a lot. Some points he makes actually relates to what is being read, but he likes to go on life lesson tangents that have to relation to the class. He takes a while to grade things so you never know where you stand in the class. As a gen ed, I would not recommend taking him.
This is not for you if you want an easy gen ed grade. Material for tests comes from in class discussion of the text so you must take detailed notes and read diligently. He is passionate about the material and is understanding of student's needs but that does not diminish the rigor of the class. Grading can be slow at times. Use his office hours!
This is a tough class but that doesn't mean it's not fantastic. If English is your thing, this is the class to take. You'll have to work for your grade because, duh, you're in college. He's not out to get you, I promise. Use his office hours because he's there and willing to help you (but not to do the work for you).
If you're trying to find an easy gen ed class DO NOT take him. He gives very detailed quizzes from large amounts of reading. Not many grades in this class and he takes forever to give back graded material. You also have a paper thats worth almost all of your grade and a final exam on top of that. If you want an easy A, don't take this class.
Don't take this if you're looking for an easy gen ed. I talked every day in class and still got a B- participation grade. Plus, one essay is 30% of your grade. He never gives a straight answer to even yes or no questions.
Foltz literally tells you to drop the course if you are looking for an easy A, as an STS class should be, due to his teaching skills and tough grading. High volume work load and the quizzes are basically, what is the third word of the second paragraph. BUT utilize office hours and he will help as best he can. Nice guy overall.
Great class if you enjoy reading and disusing the material. You go really in-depth in the novels and its easy to see Foltz knows his stuff and is passionate about it. But if you aren't a good writer you will have to work hard for a B. overall great class, but you will have to work for your grade. Always helpful during office hours
Participation is everything in this class, but it's not an easy class to participate in. Professor is very quick to offer criticism, but rarely offers any suggestions to improve. I'd never gotten below an A on a paper before I took this class, and I failed both of his papers. He told me there was "only one remotely good sentence" in one of them.
Foltz knows his stuff and is very passionate about post war lit. He told us at the beginning of the semester to drop the class if we weren't ready to dip into the material. The class was mostly pretty enjoyable, except the fact that if you don't talk a ton you're not getting above a C. Good luck getting an A in this gen req.

Professor Foltz's class is tough, but overall he is very passionate about what he is teaching. I found that his classes were very interesting, and as long at you did the reading you were fine for the quizzes. He is very accessible during office hours, but if you have a lot of questions it's better to schedule a time near the end of his hours
The teacher said it himself on the first day: "I do not recommend you take this class", and I could not agree more. He is a ridiculously hard grader and your opinion isn't right unless it's his. Even his colleagues told me he is an outrageously unreasonable professor... sign up for literally anyone else you can get besides David Foltz.
Lots of reading. Lots of it. Lots of analysis. Lots of writing. Its an English class.. this stuff was interesting at times. And participation matters. He also makes you set up times to meet with him at the library to go over papers and stuff. Overall, he's a cool guy. Class is a lot of work though.
Prof. Foltz gets a lot of flack but his class really is helpful as far as deep and critical thinking go. It can be confusing at times but if you pay attention and ask questions you'll do great. He loves participation, so it's great if you love to talk. Start early on in the semester and it'll only get easier. Not a lot of reading.
He gets a lot of flack for being hard but you will have lots of fun in his class. I didn't like it at first but was in love by the end. The reading materials are fun and interesting and it's not too much every night. He wants participation so make sure you talk a lot. I usually hate english but I loved his class
Best teacher I ever had at Clemson. Hard, but fair.
Foltz made it extremely difficult to make above a C in his class, and vocalized his level of difficulty from day one. I found it truly impossible to maintain a passing grade. Over half of our class dropped the course. Beware and avoid if possible.
Wonderful class- amazing professor. The discussions are so interesting! Professor Foltz can be intimidating at first, but stick with him because it gets WAY better.
Class can be tough but Foltz is a nice, respectable teacher. Chooses great books to read. Id recommend.
Get ready to read every night, youtube will help but won't help enough. Don't really know what to write down during class because he just talks about quotes and its boring. You just watch the time pass.
It seemed intimidating as a first semester freshman taking his class, but if you work hard and give good points in class, he can really see it and work with you if you have questions. It's a lot of work, but overall very interesting. Also, pop quizzes are a pain because they test random memorization from reading. I wish those weren't a thing.
I can't say enough great things about Mr. Foltz. His lectures are so thought provoking and led to very stimulating class conversations. His expectations are incredibly clear and he is so helpful during his office hours, so I didn't find this class as difficult as everyone says. If you enjoy learning and thinking critically, take this course.
Such a great teacher & really does care about his students. You must be willing to participate in class discussions so if you don't like doing work and/or talking in class- you won't do well. Otherwise, definitely would recommend.
Professor Foltz intimidated me during the first lecture. But he only does this to set a standard for his class. He wants students to work for their grade. That being said, if you try and participate in his class, you will have an amazing time. I honestly looked forward to this class every single time. 10/10 recommend.
To start, I understand many of the other commenters' feelings. Professor Foltz is incredibly difficult - but only if you don't do your work. Getting ahead on class readings and actually thinking about their meaning beyond the obvious will help you in his class. Just do your work and you'll do fine in his class.
David Foltz is easily my favorite professor I have had at Clemson. I enjoy reading books but I did not enjoy literature in high school. Taking his class I enjoyed the books we were reading and the discussion was interesting. He's a tough teacher but he clearly knows what he is talking about and genuinely wants you to learn.
One of my favorite professors. He definitely makes you work for your grade and the class isnt easy, but hes one of the best professors Ive had. Classes are discussion based which is amazing. Also, he is genuinely an interesting professor to listen to.
Foltz gives AMAZING lectures and is really clear about what he expects of you. I am not very quick at responding to critical-thinking questions so my participation grade was pretty bad, but overall I just really enjoyed the class. I definitely didn't ace it, but I would take his classes again just for the lectures.
Participation makes your grade in this class, go to class and office hours if you don't like to talk in class. Foltz loves what he teaches and wont hold back if you show you're truly interested. Never underestimate what you can learn from a "gen ed"
Great lectures, sometimes whole class can go off on a tangent some weird reads, mostly great reads READING QUIZZES MATTER TAKE THEM SERIOUS THEY ADD UP
the class is super interesting and mr. foltz is the best. the class can be difficult, but you learn to love it. if you're on the fence about signing up for the class, i say sign up for it. the reading seems strange at first, but it will make sense after a few discussions. HUGE tip: think about the reading a lot outside of class, it's ESSENTIAL.
One of my favorite classes and professors at Clemson. I took his class a little over a year ago, but both his inspirations and the material we went over has stayed with me since. There's a lot of reading, but they're enjoyable books. He gets really deep into meaning, and there's a lot of (awesome) class discussion. Tough guy, but kind and fun.
Dr. Foltz seems intimidating at first, but he is one of the most caring professors I've ever had. There's never a "wrong" answer to a discussion question; he did a great job conforming the discussion to how the class was interacting. The quizzes are usually given on Friday's, so do not skip. Don't be afraid to talk in class and ask questions.
If you get more than 4 absences, its a half a letter grade off for every additional absence, no matter what the situation is. Foltz is the most ridiculous and condescending professor I have ever had. He doesnt teach. He talks and rambles about pointless things and expects far too much for his gen ed courses.
I took this class wanting to become a better writer, but I took several steps back. Do not attempt to be creative in your writing, when writing your papers, write what he will like. He has a very pessimistic view of life. Tough grader, not fair either. Class discussions were interesting. More negatives than positives.
This class is not an easy A, and I found myself very stressed throughout the semester. However, on the last day I was surprised to see how sad I was to have the class come to an end. He's a great professor, but does grade toughly. I am grateful that I took him though. He makes you think about the world and who you are. Take it if you can handle it
He seems tough at first, I think he tries to scare people out of his class, but if you and the class engage in conversation, then he will become the coolest guy in the world. He is super caring and wants you to do well. My tip for him: TALK in class, he will never make you feel dumb for your ideas, and utilize his office hours. He wants to help.
Easily the most knowledgeable teacher Ive had in my life; it was a really interesting class overall. Respect the class even if its only a 1010 class; youll get slapped in the face if you dont
Prof Foltz is a solid choice for a lit class, and I really only started to appreciate him in the last month of the semester. Class discussions get somewhat philosophical at times, but its a very interesting class. He expects a lot out of you and "low balls" every grade, but at the end everyone ends up with As. Definitely go to his office hours!!
Foltz is a great teacher and lecturer. Get ready to work and pay attention. Go to class and participate and you'll do well, but don't expect this to be easy by any means. Textbook and attendance are mandatory.
One of the worst professors I've had at my time at Clemson. He often rambles on in his lectures which put the class behind schedule and often is late to his office hours. 70% of the class was ungraded at the time of the final so I had no clue what my final grade was going to be. Do not take it if you want to make a relatively good grade.
Prof Foltz is amazing & super passionate about what he does. His class is hard because of the material (Odyssey, Inferno, etc) but he tries hard to make the information clear & his office hours are great. Discussion is important so make sure you read so you actually know what's happening and can contribute. Attendance is graded.
This is NOT a normal english class. It's mostly philosophical, and there's no note taking from a ppt. Class is basically a socratic seminar everyday, and your notes should reflect that. You NEED to bring up a good point in discussion everyday or every other day to make an A. In other words, being present and taking notes everyday won't cut it.
Foltz definitely makes class interesting, I really enjoy all of our class zoom discussions. There is a lot of reading in this class, and there are very in-depth quizzes on them too. You can tell that he cares about teaching well, but maybe he takes it a little far for an STS class and it would be helpful if he had more visuals during his lectures.
I really loved the discussion in class. Foltz is very good at weaving in concepts with each other and making sense out of complex topics. More than a literature class, this is a philosophy class and it's very important that you add insightful things to class every day to get an A. He is a hard grader but you get a new perspective on life.
There are very, very few assignments given. Your grade will ride on only a handful of assignments. Besides that, Professor Foltz is amazing. Very sociable, isn't about strictly learning. Cares about his students and wants to get to know them on a personal level. Makes the texts read in class a lot more understandable through class discussions.
Professor Foltz is by far the best professor I have had at Clemson University. His lectures are simply fantastic and the seminars he conducts and creates within the classroom are amazing. He tailors the course material and coursework in a way like no other that makes the final weeks of his course not a hellish nightmare but a satisfying conclusion.
Honestly, he's intimidating as HECK, but his class yanked everyone's intelligence out of the ditch and made us think about things in a new way. Participation is SUPER important and you need to speak multiple times in a class. I am procrastinator #1 on this planet, but the assignment due dates are structured to help you avoid pulling all-nighters.
Never take this professor if you want to get a good grade. Talks a LOT, if you don't pay attention for one second forget it. Took forever to grade midterm and midterm had 64 questions plus 6 free response where he expected from us to write about 300words each question. Mind you, time limit was 1h 15min. Avoid this professor at all cost.
Professor Foltz is by far the best professor I've had at Clemson. Because his lit classes satisfy GenEd requirements, many people take it expecting an easy A, and it's definitely not that. I'm a science major, but I really enjoyed his lectures. A tough grader and demands participation, Foltz knows exactly what he wants to help his students achieve.
Professor Foltz hands down is the best professor that I have had yet. This class was mainly discussion based (based off of readings or videos). This course required two of the best books I've ever read (In Cold Blood and The Secret History). Foltz is super good at making his points clear and the class as a whole was very interesting. Good feedback!
Prof. Foltz was honestly just not the best person to be taught by. He was constantly behind on what we were supposed to be doing in class. He took forever to grade everything and was super harsh when grading for our participation in class. I talked a good amount in class and still had a B for engagement. I don't recommend him.
I had this professor for ttsb, and I was required to take this course. This class plummeted my gpa before I even started college in the fall. It is very lecture heavy, and if you do not participate you will have a bad grade. Not the way I wanted to start off college in the summer, and the tests are impossible. Avoid at all costs.
Prof. Foltz is an intellegent teacher, but he's bad at responding to emails and explaining. He gets distracted easily and many times I ask myself what's the point of this. After every sentence, he makes a note that "this will be on the exam so know it" but does a very poor job actually preparing us for exams. We have lots of reading and quizzes.
I took STS 1010 in the summer session.. it was not my favorite. He's a fun person, but his tests are difficult and he's sort of a harsh grader. He is always there to provide feedback even though some of it isn't clear. He inspires critical thinking and teaches you to really dig deeper into the context of things.
Dont take this professor if you just need a lot credit. He expects way too much from non-english majors, and gives you little to no guidance on what you are graded on. He is a great guy and very good teacher, but if you dont think exactly like he does, you wont succeed.
Professor Foltz is a nice and interesting guy. but for a class meant to be pretty easy and is pretty easy when taken by all other professors, it is HARD. He expects too many philosophical responses and takes a letter grade down in participation when on your phone without warning. participate as much as possible but you won't get 100 in P regardless
If you don't want to work, this isn't your class, but I like the guy. He cares and is interesting to listen to. Quizzes can be tough, most points come from engagement and midterm/final. (had him 2x and got points on both midterms bc he never handed them back) world lit was better than sts imo. quizlets available
Took him in the summer and did not know what to expect. STS is a tough class with a lot of reading but is also really fun to learn about some things you probably have thought about. Professor Foltz is a great teacher and I would recommend the class to anyone
I took this class for my non lit requirement as a freshman and it definitely was a junior level course. You are required to purchase paper copies of multiple books. class is discussion about the books which can get boring but you are graded mostly on participation. There are 3 total essays. He is difficult to reach and attendance is required.
Do not take this class with him. Not accessible outside of class AT ALL. Had to buy ~8 books for the class in paperback, no technology allowed in class. Super late grading and had no feedback once grades finally were posted. There was also a lot of room for interpretation on what he wanted to see on the essays.
Terrible class all around. We were supposed to have three papers for the class, but we only finished two that determined our entire grade. Most people did terrible on the first paper and it took him 3 months to grade. The course is book heavy but I never read a single one he explains everything needed for the papers in class.
Definitely a tough essay grader, so do not expect an easy a, but the lectures were super fun and engaging. Definitely go to his office hours for help on essays and keep up with the readings, because if you do not then you'll struggle, but the class as a whole is super enjoyable if you put in the work.
He grades tough but has given some of the best lectures of my college experience. If you can take his class, do it. The work you do is a lot but so worth it.
Super nice guy which made me enjoy the class but lots of reading and graded on a bell curve.
Seriously the greatest professor I had at Clemson. The most considerate staff member I have met here. Genuinely cares about your wellbeing. He is worth getting to know 100%. Cares so much about his students and wants everyone to do well, while making sure everyone is learning at the same time. TAKE. THIS. GUY!
He was such a nice professor and genuinely cares about his students. The class was largely lectures and involved a lot of outside reading, so beware. But overall he was extremely thoughtful and interesting to listen to!
Don't take Dr.Foltz if you want to save yourself from misery! Each class drags by like a slow painful death and it's like he enjoys watching us be tortured
Foltz is one of those rare teachers whose lessons you will remember for the rest of your life. He's a really interesting lecturer, melding philosophy, ethics, and current issues into each subject. He's that teacher who actually explains how the world works and why things are. However, he does make you work a lot and his class is unreasonably hard.
Very tough grader, only likes the sound of his voice, his way/beliefs or no way. There is so much reading and if you don't understand what he is talking about all the time then you will get lost. Grades very slow and makes a class that is not in anyones major so difficult for no reason. The prompts are so broad that it is impossible to please him.
The only hw is reading books. The assignments are reading quizzes that are very basic, the midterm and the final (there is optional extra credit). Dr. Foltz is a very good lecturer and staying engaged with the lectures was pretty easy. You have to pay attention in lecture or you will fail. Harsh attendance policy. Not super available outside class.
STS 1010 was so boring. It was a bunch of random stuff, usually a quiz everyday on the night before's reading. Foltz was okay, nice guy, but not really a good teacher for STS. I did not learn anything. Midterm was hard, and the final. Big project at the end that was a grade booster. Pick another teacher though.
Do not take this professor; do not take him. He only reports grades to you twice a semester because "that is what the University requires." Most of his lectures are him tooting his own horn, and on top of that the quizzes he gives ask you to recall very specific parts of sometimes long sections of reading.
Prof. Foltz is an interesting character. He doesn't allow technology in class unless absolutely necessary, notes are only about class discussion, test papers are written in class, and grades are only reported at midterm and semester's end. Logical thinkers might have a tough time following along in his class as lectures can get pretty abstract.
Very full of himself and thinks that his class is the only thing that matters because you chose to take it. For an intro level (3 credit) gen-ed you will find yourself working 10x harder than major specific classes. Daily quizzes at the beginning of class and on the first day of the course he makes it clear that he wants certain students to drop.
Loved taking the class, Foltz is a great instructor. Can be hard to stay 100% focused all class, but if you give the effort and go to office hours you will do great.
He's a nice guy but I wouldn't take the class again. The things he talks about are interesting but the lectures are mainly him talking about existential crisi for 50 minutes.Pop quizzes multiple times a week about the tiniest details from the readings. We took an exam over 2 months ago and he still hasn't graded them so nobody knows if they'll pass.
Great professor. Very insightful to life beyond class. Highly recommend
He is a great guy, and super interesting lectures! Good attendance policy, lots of pop quizzes on small details. I would reccomend this class for your lit credit as you only have to read two books all semester, which isn't much, and both are super interesting and make you want to read! Honestly, just read well and you will be fine.
Worst professor I have ever had. Extremely monotone voice that could be used as white noise to go to sleep at night. He takes forever to grade things, says he's going to do something and doesn't, has unrealistic expectations, encourages students to withdraw from his class, assigns very strange texts that are very difficult to read, etc. HORRIBLE
Foltz is a nice guy who you can tell truly enjoys what he teaches. Participation in class is crucial and taking notes on discussion is so important to do good overall. The quizzes are a little harder than he describes, I would recommend reading whatever is assigned twice before the quiz. Office hours also helped out a lot!
Professor Foltz's STS1010 is a challenge, but worthwhile. He's an engaging lecturer, encouraging critical thinking. The workload is heavy, but using Unstuck study alongside the textbook really helped me stay on top of it.
He is a great person, just not a great teacher. He returned the midterm grade a week before the final, and on the day before the final, still hasn't posted half the grades. We were supposed to have a final project as a grade booster but he scrapped it. So the final grade was decided by the midterm and final only. He also rambles.
I liked David's class. He talks about people “inevitably dropping the class” all semester long but it is just to make you nervous. This class is not an easy A. You have to read a lot for this class because there is always a possibility of a pop quiz on the material.
He's a great guy, but he likes to talk about random stuff. Extremely interesting lectures and information in class, and the stuff you talk about is what's on the tests. take notes!! grade was midterm, final, and participation. he claims you'll have other assignments but then inevitably drops them. The class isn't hard, you just have to contribute.
Mr. Foltz is an interesting professor and I truly enjoyed him and the course. The text are majorly weird though and, at times, made me uncomfortable. He dropped our second test so our grade was the reading quizzes (which you have 5 minutes to do) and 2 essay exams. Overall, it is not easy but it is manageable. Expect to ready ~40 pages per class.
I went to this class for one day, met this professor, and dropped it. I hated this class - the reading schedule was insane, he has a no tech rule, and he forces participation - I am so glad I dropped. I really disliked him. Save yourself the hassle and pick another professor.
Foltz was one of the most interesting professors I've ever had. The readings were really interesting, and while they didn't always make sense, he always explained them well. On the other hand, the class is really difficult, so if you're looking for an easy A, take a different class.
Id you're an upperclassmen you're used to the work load that his class has. If you're a freshman or sophomore looking for an easy A, there are other teachers. I will say all you need to do is read the readings, and show up to class ready to take notes and chime in. If you do that it's gonna be cake. He's a great guy and really engaging
He is an interesting professor, he takes time to get used to. Don't get scared when he tells you to drop the class, it really isn't that bad of a class. Really reading heavy. He only lectures. Buy the books so you can annotate because text is allowed on the tests. His lectures are eye opening and will leave you thinking. Would recommend.
Interesting professor and reading. Not an easy A so I regret taking it. Takes points off for missing class and tests were hard (with unclear criteria). Did give a lot of extra credit opportunities which saved my grade. Don't be scared when he tells you to drop the class, but it's probs best to take something else if you just want an easy lit credit
hard at first, but engage in class discussion and you'll pick up on it quick, hilarious guy and engaging lectures, sucks at grading on time but will push back exams, GET A STUDY GROUP, lots of material but all of the books are really good, and you get to watch a TV show, not an easy A but not that hard and worth your time if you like crime stories
