Dr. Dave is Great! Lots of interesting guest speakers. Could do without the class being on Friday night but the lectures are great lots of discussion and debate.
The exams are really difficult for this class. You have to learn the info by heart to do well. But, Dave is a great professor!! He challenges his students but wants you to succeed, so he will help you out by giving extra credit and study guides. Also has games and guest speakers in class. Not an easy A but one of the best psych classes at UCSD imo
To put it simply, David was a great professor. He somehow manages to make a 3 hour lecture engaging and interesting. Class grade is composed of 2 tests (40%) and 1 group poster presentation (20%) but it's reflective of class material and you have to genuinely learn the material instead of just memorizing. He's really funny and relatable to students
Dave is the best professor I have had here. He explains concepts really well and makes hard concepts easy. Kept my attention even in a 3 hour class and made it interactive and fun. Very helpful when you ask questions. Test is all free response but if you study the study guides and go to class, it won't be hard. Take him!
Dave is a pretty good professor. The material is easy to understand and the delivery is great for the most part, and you can stay engaged. Mandatory attendance is kind of obnoxious in a college course, and his exams have the strangest format but he is a professor I would recommend.
Dave's lecture style is really different from most professors. His quirky sense of humor and interactive lectures keep students engaged and involved throughout. He reinforces concepts through relatable examples that make them easier to remember. Tests are based on a study guide that he provides. This class was fun but I also learned a lot!
He is the best professor I've had in college. The class is super interesting and he sticks to the lecture material so you know exactly what he is testing on. The tests are open-ended but there's plenty of extra credit. He also gives the readings before the class starts so you don't have much homework during the quarter. Highly recommend taking him
He's hilarious and a total dad. Grading scale is very clear and always always do the extra credit!
Dave is a great professor because he goes through lecture material and makes it interesting. I think that the exams are fair but it takes up so much time to study because it's just pure memorization. If you take him, know that you have to work for it! No easy grades
Really great professor. He's passionate about the subject matter, and is funny and engaging. His lectures are largely discussion based - you spend a lot of time talking to the group you sit with in lecture about various topics. The tests are only difficult if you don't study and don't know what you're doing. Make a quizlet and you'll ace it!! :)
David is a really nice professor. His lectures are engaging because he provides various examples. Also, he gives extra credit lecture and reading study guides which helped to study for midterms. His midterms are straight from the study guides, but you really have to study for his class. Be prepare to memorize!!
Dave is a really good professor- easy to understand and his lecture slides are straightforward. He's an approachable guy. I'm not a fan of his exam style. It's all free response which makes it harder than other psych classes. It's a fair exam because he gives you a very detailed study guide that you fill out throughout the quarter but it's a lot.
Everything he puts on his tests are from the lecture study guides and reading study guides. If everyone turns in the study guides he tells you what will be on the test (specifically). Class is super interesting and easy if you pay attention!
Fun professor who makes the subject engaging! Straightforward tests
PSYC1 for Spring 2017. 2 midterms, an annotated bibliography, and poster presentation count for our grade. Attendance and SONA didn't raise our grades, but they could drop it if we didn't participate in it, so that sucked. He had 'study guides' for lectures and the readings, where if you filled it out, you could get +3% extra credit for midterms!
Dave is a great person and a great professor. He knows what he is doing andalways come prepared to teach the class. He makes things easy to learn with his easy lectures and study guides.
Dave makes you work for your grade, but he's very clear about his expectations from day one. You can get away with not going to class, but you should definitely go -- his lectures are interesting and there's lot of group participation. His exams are comprehensive, but you are completely able to get 100%. Same thing with papers and group projects.
Dave is honestly so great, he gives you a clear outline of what you need to know for the class and expects you to fully understand the material. His exams are straightforward but definitely be prepared to thoroughly learn the material. This class is a lot of work, but you know what to expect from the start!
Great professor, is always willing to listen to concerns and questions. Pretty laidback person in general, so as long as you don't do anything stupid, he's generally very understanding for your needs (aka needing to send electronic copy of hw due to printing difficulties). Very straightforward in telling you what to study, you basically can't fail.
"Body Image and Attraction" I appreciated how he was extremely accessible outside of class, and responsive by email (even though he didn't live in San Diego). His office hours are helpful when it comes to papers, and I liked how some were mandatory because it made them less intimidating. I would've liked optional extra readings, though, for interes
He was such an engaging professor! Lectures were entertaining and he explained material very well. There were a lot of assignments, but the study guides were helpful for the test. I could've done without the paper. His activities for lecture were also entertaining, like the mating activity.
Dave's one of the best professors I've had the pleasure of knowing. The enthusiasm for teaching & care for students will definitely leave a lasting impact, and he has earned my respect and trust (which is a very hard feat). My only critque was the difficulty he had adjusting his lessons from semesters to quarters, but with time, he will perfect it.
Dave's class is so awesome because it is so interactive. You don't just read from the textbook and listen to lectures, his lectures involve lots of group discussion and team led activities that actually make you think and understand the material. What the assignments are, are clear. You have to stay on top of them yourself to keep up.
Dave was super rad. I've had him for two different courses , both of which were very similar in structure. From the start, he makes his expectations clear which allows students to get ahead if need be. His tests are pretty straightforward since he has students fill out study guides that literally cover everything that will be in the test.
Dave is a wonderful professor. He takes a basic intro course and makes lectures interesting and entertaining by presenting terminology and research in a way that is easy to understand and captivating. He does this through the use of well organized slides, enthusiastic speech, and well placed videos/ graphics.
You write one research paper on an experiment you yourself conducted with your group throughout the quarter. You turn in your paper section by section for a grade and he gives amazing feedback to help you improve for when you turn in the final paper. You are put into a group so definitely try to pick a good group.
Interesting guy. This class was really frickin' tough and mentally+physically challenging, but as long as you stay on top of everything and don't procrastinate, you'll be fine. Grading comments are hard to read so be sure to ask for clarification if needed. Can be a bit harsh but ultimately fair to all and it's not difficult to get on his good side
Provides personal feedback. Not difficult in terms of exams or reading but huge emphasis on group research project as well as personal research paper.
Dave seems very accomplished and is an amazing professor. Love the suggestions and feedback he gives you on your projects and papers because he really wants students to learn how to excel. His class promotes engaging with the material and provides an avenue for his students to become little scientists. His instruction is grade A!
Dave is a interesting professor and a cool guy. This class, actually Lab, is a challenge if you don't like working in groups. picking a good group is essential to a good grade. Also, you have to choose your topic for the whole quarter in the first time you meet, so try to have a strong idea from the get go. You make a real experiment, tho, nice
Dave is by far one of the best professors I've ever had. His lecture and reading study guides are comprehensive and make studying easy. His lecture style is easy to follow so that when you go back to look at slides after class you know what you're looking at. A great class, would definitely take it again.
Dave is an amazing professor who cares, is funny/awkward, and easy to talk to. I am super not a fan of research papers, presentation, and three hour classes, but he tries to make it a little entertaining. If you have questions, you can email him or set up an appointment and he is very helpful and guides you through your paper if you reach out.
Great Teacher
He's the best! He is engaging with his lectures and really does well in keeping the class upbeat. I appreciate how much he cares for us as students in the way he devotes his time and energy into us through his feedback, hours outside of class, and teaching. He listens to feedback well and does really respect his students, which is awesome!!
Dave is an awesome teacher with clear presentations, clear guidelines for your paper, and very entertaining. He is entertaining by being very open and willing to engage with his students no matter what the topic at hand is . He is very respectable and will help you every step of the way if you need it.
Take his class! I've taken psyc 104 last year, and decided to take his social psyc lab class with him this quarter. He really tries to work with his students if we needed few more minutes to turn a paper in due to traffic and such. Also, his lecture doesn't need any reading except for few pdfs he gives us, so you don't need to buy a textbook.
This was class was one of the harder classes I have taken at UCSD, but Dave made the class enjoyable. He was very humorous, brought snacks to class, and when you needed help on something he explained it thoroughly. There is no book for this class, but there is a research paper where you conduct your own research - it's difficult, but fair.
Dave is super rad. Knows what he's talking about and facilitates discussion. He expects the class to participate so don't zone out. But his lectures are so interesting that you wouldn't want to anyways (except the stats lecture, bring a pillow for that one).
Dave is a great guy. Great teacher as well. He has a quirky sense of humor and keep the class engaged with it. You can tell he doesn't care about what anyone thinks about him so he does his own thing and it's pretty admirable. The main project is a research design and paper. It's broken down week by week so it's not that bad over all. expect 2 work
He is a great professor. I learned how to conduct a simple experiment through this class, how to interpret the data, and write a scientific paper about the results. The best part is learning how to analyze statistical data and formulate it into words. That's going to be really helpful for the future. He is nice and cares about his students.
Dave is such a nice professor. So enjoyable in his class and I dont even notice how fast time passed in a 3hour class
An amazing professor! While the course itself is challenging, Dave is always willing to help his students and provide feedback when it comes time to write the research paper. Take him if you get the chance!
Professor Dave is by far the best teacher I have had at UCSD! His lectures are so interesting and engaging. It is not for the faint of heart. If you are shy about sexual content, do not take this class; otherwise, TAKE IT! The information you learn is very worthwhile, plus you learn how to ACTUALLY write a research paper. Like, a legit one.
Going to class is a must, Dave is a great professor who thoroughly explains the material in such an easily understandable way, I'm so glad I took this lab with him
Social psychology lab. HIs lectures are really interesting. Half of the class we work on our group projects, presentations, or activities. His class is very interactive and engaging, he presents theories by using real life examples where we engage with one other as a class.
Dave is a great professor, he makes it very clear what we need to do every week and the work actually helps with developing the skills in terms of psych research and understanding the topics. Need to invest time in the course to get a satisfying grade.
Dave is an excellent professor. He explained his lectures very detail. And he used examples from different study to help us memorize the key concepts. His test is easy as long as you study the study guide throughly. He is a chill professor and never make me feel sleepy during class. Recommend to take his class!
David gives interesting, fun, and concise lectures, I never feel bored or have the desire to look at the clock when I am in class. What I love about this class is that everything has a point to it and so you want to learn and master the course material not just for a grade. If there was a tinder version of rating professors i'd swipeTF right.
This dude teaches like youre in high school again. His topics are so simple and easy that he has to make his exams purely memorization based. You are required to memorize word for word pages of notes. He only accepts HIS definitions of things. His definitions clearly resemble how this man lacks confidence as he has to try to big d his students.
Great professor. Really interesting material
I strongly recommend taking PSYC 104 if you are willing to put in the work to do well. This class is not for people who only do the bare minimum. There are group poster projects, several study guides, and tons of concepts to learn. The midterm was not as hard as I thought it would be, but it was still challenging. DO THE STUDY GUIDES TO DO WELL!
Dave is a great professor. He makes the course material interesting through fun activities (like student-run auctions and skits), videos, and personal anecdotes that help us understand the material better. There is a lot of in-class discussion. The course itself is not difficult. There are many extra credit opportunities and tests are clear.
Great professor! Lectures are interesting and very informative. Only hard part is that the exams are free response so you really have to give yourself wnough time to study and know the material
Professor Frederick does a fantastic job at keeping the class pretty organized. His syllabus is very in depth and provides many information regarding how the class is structured and how he will be grading. When you think that you may not be doing well, he offers different ways to improve ourselves.
Attendance is mandatory but the lecture is fun and interactive. David plays some illustration and fun videos for us as a break from lecturing. Filling out study guides are very useful. Experiments and studies brought up are interesting as well. Theres not much reading to do. Just know the lecture material very very well.
Dave is a really great lecturer. He made all concepts very clear and interesting. The three hours really fly by. He makes lectures interesting with a lot of videos, group discussion, and little skits. 10/10 would recommend him if you want to learn some cool stuff and not off yourself every time you look at the clock. Theres a lot of packets though
I learned a lot in this class! Professor Frederick made lectures very interactive and this made the material in the class stick better. He made you discuss a lot with classmates, and share opinions about many topics. Tests are all memorization from the study guides, so make sure you know your stuff! Pay attention, come to class, and interact!
Take this class if you actually want to learn and participate. David has a very structured curriculum and the study guides will help you boost your grade and pass the exams.
Although the professor is GREAT the class itself is pretty difficult. That may largely be attributed to the fact that I don't have a great Psych background. Prof. does a really good job explaining things and his lectures are note-taker friendly and thorough. He gives out study guides that are helpful and help you on exams but there is group work:(
He's really great and you learn so much. He really grades hard on the research paper, but only to push you to do better on the final paper. Go to his OH, they're fun and he gives useful tips and helps you get back on track if you feel that you're falling behind.
Dave has lots of class activities and group interactions. He is understanding and considerate of his students and cares about them. He explains his materials thoroughly and always available thru email or in his office. Class attendance is mandatory and lab requires lots of reading and writing, but it helps you to write a great research paper!
David is one of the best professors I have taken at UCSD. Although the whole class revolved around a group research project, he made it easy to finish in time. He is enthusiastic and facilitates great conversation.
David is a charming professor. He can always give us inspiring classes and vivid examples. His lecture always contains videos, student interactions and sometimes movies. Though the class is fun and inspiring, the exams are very exhausting. That's because all questions are FRQs! You have to fill all blanks correctly or you get 0 points!
Initially, I felt overwhelmed by this class. The syllabus is extensive and there are large assignments. However, Dave is great. He's communicative, funny, and engaging. He's accessible and makes his lectures fun, which makes the material easier to understand. The class does take hard work & commitment, but the takeaway is worth it. Take his class!
Dave is one of the best professors I've had at UCSD, took his 104 class, didn't do so well but I enjoyed him so much I decided to go ahead and take his lab class. Very accessible and really wants the best for his students. As long as you stay on top of your work and go to class you'll do great (lab is MUCH easier than 104, and way more fun!)
This quarter I took Dave's gender psyc lab and it was the best choice that I could have ever made. This class helped reinforce the research methods that I learned from social psychology. I joined the class knowing the basics about psych research methods and I left knowing much more about confounds, noise, and the main effect of IVs on the DV.
Dave is honestly one of the best psych professors I ever had. I think the fact that the class was relatively small allowed us to actually interact with him more often. I think his lectures are pretty on point, as they really help in writing your paper in the class. He provides you with study guides that are easy extra credit!
Dave is a great professor and an even greater person. He guides step by step on how to write our papers and even includes great reference papers from past students. He facilitates a comfortable, suitable environment for college students, but also makes up work for our grade but docking off points for even small mistakes.
I have taken Dave's classes for 2 quarters in a row (PSYC104, PSYC193L) and am very sad I am not able to take another one next quarter. He is the best professor I have had at university hands down. His lectures/study guides provide an easy-to-follow structure that highlight the most important take aways. Expert in human sexuality and body image!
I thought that the class would be difficult to manage. However, Dave always emails us to remind us about each of the assignments. He helps make it manageable by splitting up the work for us and leaves very helpful commentary to help make our final projects better. I would only request is that your commentary is in more legible writing or online.
One of the best professors who teaches at UCSD. His classes definitely require work, but it's worth it for the amount that you learn. Personable, brilliant, and fun. I absolutely recommend him.
I have had Dave as a Professor for 2 quarters now, both 193L. He is a super nice, funny, and respectable person. He made learning and doing research fun. I highly recommend you take his classes.
Dave is an amazing professor. If you have the chance, take him! I took his class for two quarters (PSYC 104, PSYC 193L) and I have learned a great deal from him. Lectures are engaging and funny. Homework and midterms can be difficult, but definitely promotes learning.
It is my 3rd time taking his class! Dave is a good professor whose class makes you want to learn more. He doesnt just tell you about what he knows or what to do, but engages you into thinking whether a statement is true or false. He gives useful tips during office hours. Anyway, I am grateful(^-^)
Great class, but DO NOT procrastinate. It def requires some level of time measurement.
Really great professor and class! I didn't have any experience in research besides my introduction research methods, and I feel way more experienced after completing the class. His lectures were well prepared and presented well. The experiment and research paper was structured well so the work was not too much at one time.
This class is taken for research requirement. I had much more funs than I expected. The way Dave design his class, writing one session of the paper each week, really give me Insights on how to write an APA paper. Also Dave is really nice. He brought snacks to the class every week.
PROS: Funny guy, knows his materials well. Organized. Makes a 3hour class bearable. Provides study guides. Interesting topics CONS: Attendance is 5%. You basically have to memorize the study guides. Tests are structured in a way that you need to get four correct answers to earn one point. Getting 3/4 blanks correct would still give you 0 pts.
took his 104 class first & although I only got a C in that class, I decided to take him again for gender lab bec he is an amazing lecturer and I know I can learn a lot from him even if he's pretty challenging. He provides a detailed syllabus and as long as you follow that, you'll do well. He doesnt round off final grades tho. So 89.99 is still a B
He will mark you off even for the slightest mistakes which for some might be a negative thing but if you're actually into research then you'll learn a lot from it. He gives detailed remarks on your paper, however his handwriting is far from legible so make sure you double check with him so you can utilize those remarks for the final paper.
Very difficult class with very intensive grading. However youll receive a lot of harsh, yet good feedback about your work. Dave is a great professor who genuinely prepares you for what writing a real research paper is like. Also I cant really see why people are complaining about the class especially since we were given 8% extra credit
I took 193L with Dave and he really did give us a lot of great advice when it comes to writing a research paper. His writing is barely legible but he is willing to answer any questions you have. The research paper is intense but manageable; and plus there're no finals in this class. I would def take him again for another Lab class!
One of the best professors at UCSD for sure. He gave out detailed lectures on research methods with hilarious lecturing style. A very loving and caring professor indeed. But be aware of the amount of time and work you need to spend to succeed. Heavy paper and worksheets throughout the course.
Overall the class was really fun and the professor was amazing! However, there is a lot of work outside of class. Be prepared to dedicate a lot of time working on the group project and personal paper.
This is my 3rd class with Dave. He has a standard format to his classes, where he lectures and you fill out packets which provide all the information you need to succeed in class, from definitions to "how to's" on how to write your essay (which is requires a ton of work!) He is a detailed lecturer, who also manages to be funny and approachable! :^)
As a teacher, he cares for his students. His lectures are constructed to help you understand the concepts (examples, templates, anecdotes). This is a lab class, so expect to put in the work (weekly assignments: paper drafts), but it's doable as long as you're on top of it. He's also very approachable, so go to him if you ever need help!
Professor Dave sets clear expectations for the class, which is to show up to class and fill out the lecture notes/study guide packet. His lectures are engaging, as is the topic, and he facilitates a positive learning environment by answering any questions that may arise during lecture. This class is difficult, but I really enjoyed the material.
Has lots of EC. Exam all free response Able to skip final to earn a at most B+ Posts lecture notes. Attendence mandatory.
Ive had Dave before for a different class and his classes are basically set up the same. He has PowerPoint lectures and we fill out study guides during lectures and the material on the study guide will show up on the exams. He presents material in a funny way that will help students remember the information. He also brings interesting guests .
Dave is your typical geek professor with a quirky personality. He definitively makes you feel like you belong and captures your attention. The data collecting, lab paper, and poster presentation is definitively alot of work. He is very quick at responding to emails and gives great feedback. I do not regret taking him twice for PSYC 193L for credit.
Professor David is really nice and quirky. He has interesting lectures, but his study guides are very tedious. There are four study guides and a project that's 20% of your grade, all 5 points. It's easy to miss points, also. Do not procrastinate on study guides, they take a lot of time. Attendance isn't mandatory, but I recommend going for points.
Super organized lectures. 2 study guides, 1 research paper, 1 group project or 2 indi projects. Very little readings, guest speakers for lectures. Time consuming study guides and research paper so as long as you're not procrastinating, you'll be fine.
Professor Frederick is a really cool professor. I took him for both PSYC 193L and PSYC 104 at the same time and he's pretty straightforward. No quizzes or exams. You have study guides due roughly every 2-3 weeks. If you go to 9+ lectures you get extra credit. Don't procrastinate on his study guides. Overall I am glad I chose to take his lab.
Dr. Frederick was a really good and interesting professor. He tries to make class fun and lighthearted and really interact with students. For PSYC 193L: COVID-19, there is an option of either going to all of the lectures and doing a group project, or non-mandatory lectures and doing 2 presentations. I did the first option and I highly recommend it.
Lectures are great, especially since online school is difficult, he does really well. He's engaging, hilarious, kind, and is actually quite knowledgeable. He will be missed at UCSD
Really great professor! He doesn't do exams but he does do extensive study guides to cover those points. He made class exciting because he was funny and a very good conversation starter. Make sure to read and I would definitely recommend going to class!
My favorite professor this quarter.
Great professor! Grading is pretty fair and allows for students to be creative with their work. Overall one of my favorite psychology professors.
Prof. Frederick is really incredible. There are no exams, large study guides take their place. The study guides consist of a factual portion, which is questions and answers, and a thought question. The thought question is basically a short essay. He is very clear with the grading and the lectures really keep you interested.
Dr. Fredrick is a really awesome professor. He doesn't have exams. We just need to do weekly study guides reading, and the instructions and requirements are very clear and detailed. The lecture class is pretty cool, the contents are very sticking on our real lives which is very useful! So sad he's leaving UCSD soon, but he's going to be missed!
For the online version of this class, instead of exams he utilizes study guides (which consist of factual portions relating to the readings and thought portions which are similar to free response questions). Beware-- the study guides are stand ins for exams so you have to grind as though you are studying for an exam. Dr. Frederick also pretty cool!
I really enjoyed his class! It was engaging since he did class discussions, showed videos, and had guest lectures. The work wasn't overwhelming because we had a moderate time to complete it and the readings were actually interesting. He had a great sense of humor which made the class more enjoyable. I would definitely recommend him for others!
Professor Frederick was very entertaining and keeps you focused during the lecture. There are 4 study guides that take the place of midterms and in my opinion that's better because it takes the stress off having to cram for a test and allows you to slowly go through the topics and theories. No final test only a final project that allows creativity.
I have enjoyed Professor Frederick class so far. I honestly don't see how I don't get an A in the class. I am taking this during lockdowns, so the class is 5 study guides and a final project with so many extra credit opportunities that you could probably bomb the project and get an A in the class with 100% on the SG. Funny. WouldTakeAgain.
I've always been a good student, and my grades have typically been well above average. I expect to get an A in this class. Class was all online with no exams. Attendance was optional but if you didn't attend you had to make up for it with extra writing. Grading isn't crazy hard; you have to put in work. Professor Frederick makes the class so fun.
David replies quickly and respect his students. His study guide is good guider and I learn by finishing his homework. However, materials in class are not as interesting as in study guide. Also, I am confused by the grading criteria, I did a lot of work once but the grade is not satisfying.
Grading is confusing.
The professor is very pleasant to work with and his lectures are interesting. There are four study guides and a final project. Overall, this class was very enjoyable.
Frederick is one of the best profs at ucsd in my opinion he puts so much work and effort into making lectures interesting as well as engaging. He really cares about teaching material that matters to us and he's really understanding about extensions or deadlines. I really appreciated the effort he put in!!
Really amazing guest lectures and actual lectures, gives a good range of in depth topics, but classes tend to not relate as much to the grades and homework/tests.
4 study guides and a final project. Prof Dave's such a big friendly giant that gives super interesting lecture with a lot of guest speakers! The speakers add so much to the class and makes it worthwhile to attend his lectures. Definitely take him!
Dave is a great guy. He makes lectures funny and interesting. He really knows what he is talking about. I took the class online because of COVID, there were four study guides with a factual portion and a thought question (like a mini-essay) and one final project. They were not extremely difficult but they do require time put into them. 5 stars.
Professor Daves class was my favorite! His lectures are really interesting and he keeps you engaged throughout. You do have to put time and work into the assignments, but they are usually broad so you can explore topics of interest to you and I found the assignments to be quite enjoyable. I would highly recommend any of his classes.
Dave is awesome. He cares about the subject matter and also cares about engaging with the class. Took his class online (mid-pandemic) so I'm not sure how his classes are in person, but classes are mainly lectures with the occasional guest speaker (all of which were awesome). He answers questions about assignments promptly, and def suggest his class
His lectures are well thought out and his guest lecturers add so much to the class. I'd def take prof again but too bad he's only gonna be here in the summers :(. The study guides are pretty easy but tedious. The final project is pretty much up to you but it's doable. No exams or quizzes. Prof is approachable and he's super caring!
What a fantastic professor. Please take his class if you want to learn a ton, experience amazing lectures, and have a good laugh too! Seriously such a caring and fun professor. The class work was the right amount of difficult for the content and the final project was super fun. Seriously cant say enough kind words about this wonderful prof.
Class was interesting, professor worked hard to make sure lectures were engaging and brought in fascinating guest lecturers! The thought question portions of the study guides were graded very harshly (no clear grading criteria, ex.'s provided resulted in a worse grade) & difficult to get an A. The final project was graded too tough in my opinion.
This professor is great and has a great attitude and holds your attention in class. The study guides are the homework and include a lot of reading each week. It's so important to manage your time wisely with this class because it's easy to put it on the back burner. Overall, you learn a lot of new interesting things about psychology.
I really enjoyed this class! The professor really makes an effort to make lectures interesting and engaging. Lots of reading but it's not too bad. No exams just study guides which I prefer because it forces you to actually read and learn the topics. This class was really flexible. I recommend!
Professor Dave was great because he was very accessible, replied to emails reasonably fast, organized the course well (assignment dates and files available on Canvas from the very beginning), and slides were actually helpful for the assignments. Lectures were engaging and relevant to material. They were also clear and audible.
I came into the class thinking it would be difficult and time-consuming. However, it was very enjoyable. I do not normally like 3 hour classes, but Professor Dave made it manageable. Guest speakers are great! You learn a lot from Professor Dave too. He's easy to contact and is nice. Lots of extra credit opportunities. Do study guides early though!
Dave is fantastic. The class was very enjoyable and I learned a lot. I will be taking him again. Also, he offers extra credit!
If you have a chance to take this class, I really suggest you do!! It is a lot of work, but worth it. There were 4 study guides which he gives you two weeks to complete each and a final project that is open for you to decide! Lectures were so great and guest speakers were the best! One of the best professors ever!
The topics covered in class were very interesting. I generally enjoyed the lectures and the guest speakers were a very cool and knowledgeable addition. However, the class is very reading heavy and a lot of study guides that need to completed (which are very time consuming). In order to do well it is imperative to stay on top of your work.
If you are a procrastinator in any way, shape, or form DO NOT take this class. I found myself struggling to keep up with the work bc it requires tons of reading and writing. The grading criteria is also not 100% clear and I saw a lot of fluctuations with the grades in my study guides. Dr. Frederick is a great lecturer but the class structure isn't.
Professor Frederick is a great professor who really cares about his students! He has us complete 4 grade-heavy assignments that are difficult but he is good at teaching the concepts. We do not have a final but we do have a final project. Overall, his lectures are interesting and keep you engaged.
Professor Fredrick was a great professor because he was guides you through the process of the paper writing, and make the grading criteria very clear. His lectures are very enjoyable because it is divided into sections so it provides a lot of different things to do and listen to in class. Guest lectures are wonderful!!
Professor Dave is by far one of the most dynamic people you will meet. Not only is he funny and engaging in matters outside of academia, he really breaks the class down into an outline to help mitigate the research paper. The feedback you receive on assignments is constructive and useful and he is extremely accessible via email and outside of class
Professor Dave is one os the few good professors I've had at UCSD. He is straight forward with his expectations, grading, as well as lecture information. The class may seem overwhelming at first, but once you get the hang of it, it's really such a great class. I think I've learned the most in this class throughout my 4 years, no cap!
Great lecturer and great class overall. The structure is built around your own learning and practice when it comes to lab/experimental research. It is work heavy though, and you will be doing hefty assignments back to back between deadlines. Its an overall insightful and great learning experience no matter your motivation for taking the course.
Professor Dave is wonderful! He gives detailed feedback and responds quickly to emails. His lectures are great, especially when he brings in guest speakers who all specialize in different topics. His class is pretty simple too: two study guides (start them early!) in place of assessments, a group project, and a final paper. Highly recommend!

I really enjoyed Dave's class, especially for being an online course this quarter (I usually hate online lectures). I like the topic material available for completing the research project. Grading expectations are really straightforward, which is nice (no confusion about what you should be doing for the course). Would definitely recommend.
The best way that Professor Dave created an amazing learning environment was the use of his guest speakers. The people that spoke were so interesting and had amazing stories to tell! My absolute favorite was Jessica Lynn and I will remember her story for the rest of my life.
He from the 1st class made it easy 2 want 2 be involved. Cares about his students. Responds to emails quickly. Provides a 24hr grace period for all assignments. No exams/ quizzes & assignments let u tailor class material to what interests u. Assignments werent annoying. He gives lots of reminders about whats due which is so helpful.
I enjoyed all of the guest lecturers he got to speak. Overall, I loved the content of the class and the professor. Definitely recommend!!
Professor Frederick was a really helpful. I took his social psychology and social lab courses and I enjoyed the structure of it. He gives pretty lengthy homework called study guides but it's essentially the main thing graded so its a fair amount of work. I appreciate his good feedback too his classes are engaging and fun!
Dave is a really kind and caring teacher who gives amazing lectures. The class has study guides that take a lot of effort, and it can be challenging to get a perfect score on them. Aside from that, the class is very enjoyable and if you pay attention and put in the extra effort, you will succeed in the class.
Prof Frederick made the online experience of taking an upper-division psychology lab class manageable and enjoyable. I was nervous coming into the quarter with a few heavily weighted assignments to decide the fate of my grade, but Prof made his expectations clear and provided excellent feedback. The group project made the class fun & interactive.
Professor Frederick is a respectful professor who gives his students many opportunities to work on improving their writing (specifically, APA style). Not only does he give clear instructions during his lectures, but he separated the sections of the paper to allow us to learn steps at a time. Luckily, this has stopped me from feeling overwhelmed.
Huge learning experience and solidified my interest in research! Assignments had clear guidelines, and he did a lot to guide us on the study guides and final paper. I also liked having to turn in drafts of my paper every week. At first I wasn't sure if I wanted to attend class, but the engaging lectures and great guest speakers made it fun.
I really liked the course but, especially given online circumstances, I am not a huge fan of the Study Guide format for class instead of the typical lecture-exam format. While it is helpful that you can work at your own pace, I believe it makes it harder for students with disabilities who need that structure.
He was funny and understanding, I would definitely recommend him! I enjoyed the team activities we did and the final paper we completed wasn't too hard to do. We went through it step by step, too so I didn't mind that we needed to work a bit harder for the grade. The study guides were doable and overall I learned a lot from this class!
Professor Frederick is an amazing human being. He is definitely one of the best psychology professors I have had. He is very understanding and accommodating towards student needs. Furthermore, he makes class not boring by having lots of engagement with other students. Class is a good mix between interaction, guest speakers, and lectures.
He always gives us specific feedback and invites many speakers that help us to think about a career in the psychology field.
If you're thinking about taking a class with Dr. Frederick, do it! His lectures are really engaging and he does his best to connect with his students, even in an online setting. Overall, I learned a lot about how to apply psychological concepts to real world scenarios and learned so much in his class. My favorite psych class so far!
Professor Frederick is funny and makes class engaging. He truly cares for his students. I also love the way he structured the research paper. We were able to work on the paper throughout the whole quarter rather than working on the entire paper in a short period of time. Study guides were also so much better than exams. I hope I can take him again!
I was really dreading having to take a lab course because it seems scary, but the way he broke down the components in research really helped me understand how a lab is really supposed to be run. Engaging research topics, and the interactive parts were actually helpful.
Professor Dave is one of the most engaging professors at UCSD. This is not an easy class, you need to put in the work, but a good grade is achievable if you try. Professor Dave is passionate and makes the class fun. Youll gain valuable skills from this course, and also hear some great jokes.
This is my second class with Dr. Frederick and it was my favorite of the quarter once again. He gave us the option of not having to attend any lectures and submit an individual project or mandatory attendance for lecture and a group project. Very interactive with great guest speakers. Homework takes longer than you'd think but very fair.
This is my second class with Dave. This man has changed my lifefor the better! He is a tough grader, but I cannot imagine my time at UCSD without having taken him. His lectures are captivating, he listens to his students, and he really wants you to succeed. His material(s) are accessible and relevant. Please take any class you can with him!
