Best teacher ever.

Dave is the greatest. Rock on, man.
Great dude!
Hardest damn class I've ever taken. But this prof is a wonderful teacher and a fun guy.
Great professor, nice & funny guy.

A lot of talk (and power point slides) on sex, and a lot of fun :)
The only redeemable prof in H2P 1. He doesn't really make much of a point, but neither do the other 3 profs. Talks about sex a lot, but he's a classicist so that's to be expected. Tends to irritate or intrigue the pathetic honors freshmen in the class.
Dr. Fredrick's the coolest!
he was a pretty good teacher, it was a hard class..but dang it! i friggin deserved an A! i had like an 89.5 and he wouldn't give it to me! suck
superfun guy! keeps you awake talking about sex! is weird about his grading....
True he does favor the controversial. He is also challenging, don't expect to just slide through the course and get an A. It won't happen. Even if he helps you with something don't think that your are automatically guaranteed a good grade.
Yeah, he tends to stick to tough subjects....tough because he always expects you to do more than you thought you would....really likes multimedia, especially assigning projects that include making websites/videos etc....and those arent the most educating
Dr. Fredrick makes you think outside the box. He is the winner of the most prestigious teaching award in classics and has a unique style. He knows his material and he can teach a wide range of subjects. I always learn a lot and have fun in his classes!
this is the best professor i have had yet in college. he keeps his lectures interesting, and he challenges his students to think outside of the box and not to take anything for granted. Highly recommended.
Intro to Gender Studies is great. Dr. Fredrick is a picky grader, but it is possible to make an A in his class with a little extra effort. He really knows what he's talking about and is good at explaining it. Take anything by him if you possibly can!!!

Good teacher, knows his stuff, nationally renowned. Very interesting, and makes H2P II a bit of a letdown, so get ready for it. And the above poster is pompous.

AWESOME professor. great teaching style that keeps every lecture interesting. always glad to help you.
Excellent teacher who forces creative thinking. He's definitely gender issue oriented, though, even in non Gender Studies Classes. He presents material clearly, however, and helps students make meaningful connections within literature. I've loved this class so much I'll have him again next semester!
Fredrick is a very interesting teacher. He likes to help his students understand and explains things in a very clear way. He is also very funny and open. His teaching style makes people take more of his classes. Although he likes details, he isn't a jerk about it. He is a really nice person.
He's a goody guy. He is much more interesting than the other H2P teachers. He has a relatively lenient grading style. I wouldn't recommend H2P, it's a waste of time.
Cute, funny as all Hell, smart as a whip, and can make the most boring crap entertaining...take his class!
awesome professor, tough grader.
Alas...I too am a Frederick fan. He's just so damn amusing! I don't know one person who hasn't cracked up during his lectures at some point, and usually they are a theatrical intertwining of tremendous amounts of information and knowledge with witty asides and humorous remarks. Good guy.
Incredibly entertaining, as well as incredibly educational. A rare mix, and well worth the effort it takes to get through his classes.
Very funny guy, hilarious in fact. So obsessed with the phallus, he might just be gay (not really, but you get the point). Something about him irked me. It was inexplicable, because he's a great teacher and very entertaining. The dude just creeped me out. I hear he's the toughest grader also.
Thing is,Fredrick tries to be a weird college student whenever he's in drill, and despite that,he can be extremely boring in lecture(Ex:chinesecalligraphy).H2pI is much more of a grind than 2,and the lectures just aren't as good (material=suck). Not really a fan of his personality, but he's accessible.
A tough grader, but gives enough small assignments that an A is totally attainable. Incredibly helpful and makes even the most boring of subjects incredibly entertaining. The best professor I've ever had. Rome on Film is a great colloquium, even if it requires a lot of reading.
Dr. Frederick is probably the best teacher I have ever had. His lectures are so interesting and the class is very enjoyable. Tough grader, but he gives extra credit opportunities. I highly reccomend him and everyone that I have ever talked to agrees. A++++
Best. Professor. Ever!!!
You have to write four 8-page papers, but I acutally had trouble fitting everything into that limit! A very entertaining/interesting class. You have to buy 8 textbooks though and read around 90pgs/wk. Good reading though. I LOVED the class, but it is rather time consuming. Made an A, but worked for it.
His a really funny guy and an interesting teacher, but his obsession with sex is a little creepy. He knows his stuff though and he's a million times more entertaining then Cochran or McCray. If you want to stay awake, I'd take Fredrick
Dr. Fredrick is by far my favorite teacher. He makes our Latin class very fun and he is very easy to approach. He talks to the class like he is on our level. We call him Dave and it was cool how he remembered my name the first day of class. Dave is awesome and would recommend him to all students interested in classical studies.
By far the best of the three 1st semester H2P profs. His lectures are insightful, irreverent, and full of character and enthusiasm. He obviously loves his subject, and he expects you to, as well. It seems like he thinks H2P is the only class you're taking and he can condescend his students in his drll, but in a very funny and subtle manner. A-
Oh, Dr. Fredrick! Always so full of enthusiasm and witty comments! However, Dave is fairly obsessed with sexuality and the "Penetration Model", so if you're not really into that (I'm not), then he probably isn't the best choice for your H2P I professor. He is extremely knowledgeable, though, and you will learn A LOT in his class!
Dr. Fredrick is hot; he talks about ****es a lot. He explains difficult concepts clearly and in a detailed manner. He grades tough, but prepares his students well for papers and exams. I <3 him.
Dr. Fredrick is the best lecturer in H2P1! He is very funny and his lectures can actually be interesting. However, I am unsure that the penetration model deserves the amount of time he spends on it.
Oh, Dr. Fredrick. Had him for both Classical Studies-Rome and study abroad in Italy. All I have to say is, if you don't take his class, you'll miss out on a lot. He's a hoot, explains things so well, and presents a lot of interesting information so you don't need Sudoku to keep you awake.Probably one of the profs I've had here and I'm in my 3rd yr.
Dr. Frederick is one cool cat. Kind of an oddball, but that's what makes him so endearing. Be warned, though--- if your cell phone rings in class, he will answer it and start speaking Italian to the person on the other end..... I'm not even good at Greek and I'm still loving this class.

I had Fredrick for the first two semesters of H2P as my drill professor. He's funny and knowledgable on what he's talking about. Big on class participation. A harder grader compared to others. Reading is NECESSARY for good grade; he will use the text for every class. Be prepared for deep discussion and dirty jokes!
Dr. Frederick is most certainly dynamic. I also think he may worship Freud when no one is looking. He frequently references psychoanalysis and uses sex as a means for explaining many cultural phenomena. Overall, however, he is a great professor and I would highly recommend him, unless you're easily offended.
One of the best professors I've had yet. He is easy to talk to, humorous, and creates the most intriguing slide shows. However, he is very blunt and is not for the easily offended. Blantanly discussing sex, violence, and immoral issues do not bother him in the least. I'm looking forward to a semester in Rome with him! He is an amazing teacher..A++!
He was my H2PI drill leader. Most of what he said was interesting but way over my head. There is tons of reading, and usually weekly quizzes on it in drill. However hard, though, I still think he's the best of the 3 H2PI professors.
Good things: Funny, explains difficult material clearly. Bad things: He no longer seems to prepare very well for his classes. If he bothers to make a syllabus, he does not follow it. Assignments are often mere afterthoughts and will be sent out via email 5 days before due dates. Curses in class. Doesn't always answer emails.
This class is tons of reading and the papers are pretty difficult. He doesn't clearly explain what he wants on the paper. Awesome teacher and really intriguing subject though. Just a tough, tough A.
Amazing teacher; Dr. Fredrick has a true passion for his subject and for teaching. Digital Pompeii has been one of the best classes I've ever taken. There is a lot of work involved, but it was totally worth it to see all of our hard work come into fruition.
Take this guy. Knows his stuff, teaches it well, and is freakin hilarious too.
A genius Latin teacher. He expects a lot, but I never feel judged when I mess something up. He's funny and a great teacher of grammar and scansion. A must have for any Classics student.
Taking his online CLST of Rome class. He uses an online video game and a ton of readings. Not only does the video game downloading take forever, it literally kills your laptop. My laptop catches on fire. The questions for papers and short answers are the most random questions that do not relate at all. Way too much workload for 1000 level course
I'm taking his online class and it is a JOKE! He does not respond to emails EVER! Plus, the game literally kills my computer. I have to go to campus and use a specific computer in order to play it! His essays are completely made up out of no where. Worst professor ever! I highly recommend not taking anything this man teaches...
DO NOT TAKE! Extremely unhelpful professor. Lectures are super long with no organization. 5 two-page papers and 3 four-page papers. Quizzes. No tests. Gameplay that has tons of glitches and overheats your computer. Tons of long readings. There is not time to get everything done for this class if you are taking other classes. Didn't learn anything.
Dr. Fredrick's course isn't actually that difficult. Yes, there is a lot of reading material, but as long as you keep up with his games and read the books required, you should be find. He is always there to help. His essays may come off as confusing, but he allowed me to come to his office, so he can explain it well. The game does have glitches.
The game glitches up and sometimes you spend a long amount of time playing but not learning much buy try to finish it as fast as possible. Gives you over four different articles for one single lecture. Not to mention how he has 3-4 page essays every two weeks and quizzes weekly as well. will take FOREVER to grade your stuff and give you feedback.
Pretty tough grader on essays, but his quizzes aren't hard if you played the gameplay required and did a little reading (cliff notes can help). Gives good feedback on essays and likes to joke around with the students.
I have never dropped a class before or left a review but I am doing it for this prof (and I am a senior). DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. I am taking it over the summer and every 2-3 days he has about 5 quizzes, 6 hours of video game play, hours of lectures and readings, and an 4 page essay due. Way too much work for just a 1000 level course.
There are bad classes and professors but this is the absolute WORST class and professor. Whatever you do DO NOT take this class. It's a joke to work this hard for a humanity credit and an online class. You are constantly playing a video game that waste so much time, reading, listening to horrible lectures, taking TONS of quizzes and writing essays.
Took 1 of his level 3 classes before and I don't get why THIS ONE IS MUCH HARDER AS A LEVEL 1. Here are some of the problems I had. -Game glitches, hours of unnecessary gameplay -Oversaturation (wants you to do MUCH MORE besides his long and poorly designed levels) -Gets his TAs to negative vote these types of comments (confirmed by contact there)
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. HORRIBLE. I am in his online Ancient Rome class were you have to play a video game. Sounds fun, it's not. He makes the class so hard & none of his questions make sense. 3-4 page essays every two weeks & he takes forever to grade. is a really hard grader & never responds to emails. Video game makes your computer overheat.
I put hilarious because I feel this class is a joke in general. the game is a GIANT BUG that messes up. Freddy boy expects you to also do multiple readings and lectures. He somehow feels that a level one class should be this complex. If so he is deluded. Put 50 on the table he'll get his TA's to negative vote people's comments next semester!
He perhaps just potentially screwed a lot of his students over to do worse in class because of his game. He left it unpatched and frozen and his recent patch update to the file doesn't even work. I used to like this class but now I saddened to know my grade will significantly drop for reasons outside of my control. Thank you very much, David.
The class has alot of things that go into it. The game is fun, but very time consuming. there are quizzes on the game, lecture, and readings. there are about 5 papers which are a mix of the game, readings, and comparing history. There are things that are easy that weigh heavy on your grade plus there is extra credit so the class is do-able.
Super easy class if you do the gameplay, quizzes, and essays. SO many extra credit opportunities, dont worry if you get a bad essay grade or miss a quiz. The required reading material is not needed, you can find most books and stories online.
This was the hardest class I have taken so far because the setup was very odd. You play a video game for half of the credit and then read books about Greek Mythology and are quizzed over both the gameplay and the readings. He takes FOREVER to grade essays which is very difficult to write another one when you don't know how you did on the first two.
This class has a lot going on, game play, quizzes, books, lectures, and then essays. The biggest drag of this course is the essays, he says don't just write down what happened in the books or just answer his lists of questions but thats exactly what his prompts are, a list of questions. He also doesn't answer his emails and grades the essays late.
A lot of people complained about this class, but they were also the same people who admitted to not reading, watching his lectures, or playing the game. Honestly, you don't have to read or listen to his lectures to get an A, but the essays are sorta hard if you don't at least read. The game makes things REALLY easy to understand. It's not hard.
Dr. Fredrick is a funny man but thats it. He expects SO MUCH from his students: we have to write a 5 page paper every week, along with do a group project every week, along with read multiple books a week. He acts like this is our only class, and then when we get to class he expects us to be experts like he is. I hate this class so much.
This class was very unique. You do play a game, and it can be a little clunky. Overall I enjoyed the game portion. Dr. Fredrick does take a while to grade assignments, and really disliked how 1/3 of my grade was decided in the last week of class. But if you read the books, and play the game you should do fine.
I feel like the victim of a poorly executed passion project. The majority of this class is based on a video game that the professor made, which makes me feel more like a beta tester and less like a student. If you like scriptwriting then this is the class for you.
I've never had a professor expect so much from students and be so lazy and uncaring in return. He refused to meet for weeks at a time and did not follow his own syllabus procedures and operated as he pleased with no thought to the students. He's egomaniacal and thinks his 2005-quality video game should teach the course since he can't do so himself.
He is meticulous with his grading (gives decimals). There's so much work for his 5 assignments, & he expects more than what the prompt is given. The quizzes are fine, & the amount of time given to complete the assignments is fine too. Just be prepared to spend more time on this course than expected. I do not recommend this class as an elective!
I was going to dogg on his terrible game and class in general, but I literally didn't even do the assigned readings, or play the game and I still got an A. The majority of the points are based on 5 mini essays which you can easily do well on with a little bit of finesse. Don't do this class, do something in person and enjoy your time with it.
Lax on due dates and gives lots of extra credit. (Game Design I) felt very experimental. I enjoyed looking at game design from both a technical and artistic lens. Worst part was group projects when you got clueless people on your teams. I enjoyed this class and actively looked forward to the lectures. They were very interesting. He deserves a 4.5
course work is interesting, 3/5 of testing assignments in less than a month is a bit ridiculous, i wouldn't take unless you are extremely interested in classical roman studies.
Don't take this online, I haven't learned a thing. They think the game teaches you but it doesn't. I'm super interested in classics but this was a bad start.
There is a clear political bias that he pushes onto students throughout the whole course, and it is prominent. Otherwise his classes are fairly easy, lectures are good, offers extra credit, but its difficult to understand how he wants certain assignments done. For Classic Rome, exams are designing game levels, yet I never really knew what he wanted.
Do not take this class. You think it'll be fun but it's not. These tests have given me so much anxiety because the topics are so confusing and for some reason, he grades kind of harsh. Definitely not the easiest gen ed, pick something else. He's a nice guy, but holy cow the prompts are so confusing.
The weirdest course I've ever taken on this campus. I took it online (don't recommend) which consists of a video game and exams about every other week. Exam prompts are vague, yet graded harshly. Yes, there are many opportunities to raise your grade, but you'd be better off taking a less challenging/time-consuming elective.
Me and everyone else who took this class struggled HARD. He takes moths to grade exams and for each exam you make a video game level in essay format (its weirder then it sounds).
The exam instructions are confusing. He's a tough grader and strict about deadlines but not too concerned about getting grades out quickly. We were going to do a project where we'd write a myth so, I wrote a rough draft. Then he changed the assignment completely, so much for my rough draft, serves me right for being excited about the class. 1/10
Unclear grading criteria, expects students to be fluent in Latin for first semester Gets angry when the class is quiet but berates those who get something wrong with insults Few things graded so expect to struggle immensely Nonstop goes off on unrelated tangents Intense assignments that are for graduate students not beginners
I took Latin not knowing anything-I was the only person in there who had not previously taken a Latin class in high school. We met for office hours, which was helpful. He cares about his students and builds personal connections with them. He likes to go off on tangents and show us cool things such as video games he designed about what we're reading
Not only does Dr. Fredrick CONSTANTLY use language and make innuendos that makes the entire room uncomfortable, but he also lacks any sort of organization at all. He will give you an assignment that has you doing 600 different things but won't ever grade it. Want to know what your grades are? Good luck- you won't!! Complete waste of time.
