Best teacher I have so far, at first he seems a bet too fast, later you realize he is motivating you to learn more and actually want to learn. Good sense of humor. Fun class, extra credit and bounce points….(Aaaaaaaaaaaahh) love this teacher. And would r
very easy class. great teacher!! He gives you learning objective before exam and that makes it pretty easy for you to study for exam. and he is very helpful.
This teacher is so amusing! Biology is boring and hard, he makes it easy and interesting! Just do all of your work and go to class! He cracks me up! Study for the exams, they make your grade!
He is amazing! Just study his study guide before the exam and you will get good grades.
Great tacher. Bio. was one of my worst subject, and I got a B in his class. And I actually learned something in his class. Study his study guides, cz that's what he will test u. Make sure memorize his defination of vocabs. word by word.
Fretz is a really cool guy. Not to mention he is a very good instructor. He teaches the key points of what you need to know, and doesn't ****.He makes sure he goes over the material to see if any students have questions too.
great teacher. very clear.
He has a very boring voice. But you never get homework and his tests are given to you by the review sheets.
The BEST teacher ever!!!
Excellent teacher and very funny!
this teacher is super chill. just take him. i hate bio, but loved this class. he is really funny. got an A, had to work for it though.. offered to write a letter of rec for me, even.. awasom! voice is like johnny depp. "DOWN YONDER" "sure w
Recommended. Besides being a great teacher, he is soooooo hott!!!!
Really good teacher and ABSOLUTELY HILARIOUS!!! He really does know his biology and he is very spontaneous in answering questions that students have. If you do the work, go to class and study for the tests you will do well in his class.
I like him a lot! HE is so funny! Even he doesn't laugh a lot.but he likes to make jokes.I got an A even i don't like and don't get Biology. BUt you do need to work hard for it. BUt it will be an easy B. Test questions are all on the study guide.GOOD LUCK! TAKE HIM!
Mr.Fretz. Wonderful teacher, knowledgeable, helpful and most of all CLEAR about his Exams. He believe in reviews and he gives you a chance to not only learn but to participate in class activities. Absolutely great. totally recommend him, He is one of a kind.
Extremely intelligent & entertaining. Great teacher to take in evening classes: he will keep you awak with a few good laughs. Excellent!
Great professor! Very articulate and presents topics and concepts clearly. Study guides are helpful. Tests are fair. I was able to understand biology for the first time. A must-take at IVC! Best guy ever. I have never laughed harder in a class. Added plus: he is one HOT old man!!!
He explains the material very well and gives great study guides. Go to class and do the work and you'll succeed in the class.
What a really CooL teaCher... He explains clearlY, sometimes add jokes.. MOst donE great on his tesT....
IF YOU DONT TAKE THIS CLASS..UR A FOOL!! GOT A B (ALMOST AN A) IN THIS CLASS, AND I'M NOT EVEN GOOD AT BIO...SO EASY! THE LEARNING OBJECTIVES HE GIVES B4 EACH TEST...BASICALLY "IS" THE TEST!
Awesome! I love him! He makes the topic so interesting and he is hilarious! He has a very dry, sarcastic sense of humor but it is great. I loved going to this class. It changed my whole perspective on biology, which led me in a whole new career path since I never thought I could do the science.
He tells you exactly what you need to study for his tests. It can be an easy A if you study his learning objectives.
Listen, English is my second language. he is the cool person , what u need to do is just study learning objective then easy A+
Very easy class, just show up. You can't make up the labs. Class is not that interesting, but he makes the class fun and enjoyable. If you have to take a lab, take his class. Tests are a breeze but he docks points for the smallest mistakes.
This was one of my favorite classes. He keeps the subject interesting and provideds good study guides. This is a good class but if you ask questions out side of class he rather just flirt with you. If you're serious about learning Bio. then this is the class for you.
I LOVE FRETZ! He gives you a study guide that tells you what is going to be on the test. You just need to study that and you will be fine. He also makes the class fun by cracking a few jokes here and there.
For Korean and Chinese students, not recommended!
He's awesome and very helpful. And beisdes he has a great butt!
I LOVED THIS CLASS! FRETZ IS A GREAT TEACHER! HE IS VERY EASY TO FOLLOW AND ANSWERS ALL QUESTIONS. HANDS OUT STUDY GUIDES BEFORE EACH TEST (WHICH BASICALLY IS THE TEST)...ADDED A FEW CORNY JOKES EVERY NOW AND THEN WHICH LIGHTENED THE MOOD...NOT TO MENTION HE IS PRETTY GOOD LOOKING
Super cool guy and really helpful. Would recommend him to anyone and I hate bio! He's got a nice butt too....
Was a very easy teacher. Provides very helpful notes with entertaining, hilarious comments on biology in general. The tests are both multiple choice & written, so if you suck in one, you can do well on the other. Also an article essay. Ask him questions on the side and you get an answer to almost anything. Found my major because of him.
I was pretty reluctant to take Bio. but he made it quite amusing. Although his humor was sarcastic and sometimes inappropriate, it was always perfectly timed. quizzes were easy if you studied what he told you to. not clear or helpful at all unless you keep buggin the crap out of him. then you're his favorite.
Take this teacher
He's so awesome! The class was a lot of fun. I actually looked forward to going. Honestly. Definately take him. It's so easy, so fun, and so interesting. He makes sex seem funny!
He's a great teacher. Definetly the most interesting classes. Very informative and funny. His classes are VERY hard and challenging, but I enjoyed them very much. I highly recommend taking Biology of Human Sexuality with him.
OMG!!! dont read anyone else's rating except for mine! Honestly, this man is a a nightmare. He lectures facing the board. He has unclear disoragnized notes. Explains nothing. Expects u to understand what he is saying. Talks like we are bio experts when its just f*cken BIO 1!!!!His study **** packet is hard!! u wont be able to answer it. A
Just study what he lectures and his objectives, go to class and you'll do great. If you need powerpoint and can't comprehend basic english, then take another teacher.
this class was SO EASY. Fretz gave us the study guides of everything that would be on the test.. there were no surprises. And there's a project in the end where you could either give an oral presentation or write a research paper.. most ppl just read straight out of the book and they got A's for the damn thing so yea.. easy class and fun subject
One of the best and most knowledgeable teachers. He should have majored in sarcasm. Subject is not the most interesting at times but makes it interesting.U get study guides in the class which are pretty much the whole tests.U at least have to put forth the effort to actually memorize it and u will get a good grade. Lazy students maybe overwhelmed.
Hes a fun teacher, the test are really easy, just pay attention in class and you be fine. There is always extra credit on every test. show up, take notes, youll ace it!
His quizzes are very easy. He will tell you exactly what is going to be on them. However, if you are a serious student who enjoys biology and really want to learn, take Prof Kaufman. Fretz just tries to get the lab over as quickly as possible. It is obvious that he doesn't enjoy doing the lab.
The exam is striaght from the study guide. He will give you the study guide 1 or 2 weeks in advance. There are multiple choices, short answers and 4 to 5 essays. The essay questions are given a head of time. Extra credits are given in the back of each exam. DON'T CHEAT ...HE WILL GIVE YOU A BIG FAT "F" FOR THE SEMESTER!!!
easy class, take it for bio credit, super funny professor and study guides very helpful on exams
dont buy book coz u wont use it. definitely memorize the study guide answers bcoz the test is exactly the same. doesnt take attendance but need to show up on the day he hands back the test so u can get 1 extra pt just for showing up that day. lectures r EXTREMELY boring, he goes on & on 4ever, but at the same time his humor makes up 4 it.
Easy A dude. No book needed, just stick with his study guides. Take notes, listen once in a while. You won't regret it. Only way you won't get an A is if you don't put in any effort.
This guy is awesome and everyone should have one class with this guy.
just a wonderful teacher he is number one so much care for student spend a time for his student a lot. he is a wonderful wonderful teacher i ever seen.make the class and lucture so easy for you to can underestand he is just excellent.
awesome professor. anybody who doesn't know if you want to go into biology yet, take his class and you will definitely enjoy biology even if you don't think you will... gives you all the tools necessary to get an easy A!!!!!!!!!
Fretz is the funniest instructor i've ever had. His class is interesting and very easy!
first test... over 50% of class gets D's or F's? *bravo* he may be an easy Bio1 teacher (iono) but definitely not for BIO93. he likes to zoom past his slides, and refuses to post them up online because he thinks we dont need it. my favorite quote? "dont despair if u failed ur first test, u can still pull off a C if u try really hard"
Fretz is an absolute joker. His dry humour sometimes sarcastic is what keeps us interested in class. Well thats for those of us who understand his jokes. He gives clear guidelines which you cannot go wrong with. Highly recommended and he knows about soccer
OKI, BELIEVE ME I GOT A+ IN THIS CLASS BUT LEARNED NOTHING, IF YOU ARE REALLY LOOKING TO ACTUALLY LEARN DON TAKE IT WITH HIM, NOTES ARE JUST DISASTER
Very Easy. He does all test based on lectures only. Make sure you take good notes, ask questions and you'll be fine. One of the easiest classes taken.
hes a pretty cool teacher, cracks some funny jokes sometimes and likes his subject, he gives you review sheets that are exactly like the test, i recommend reading the chapters to better understand the subjects esp for the multiple choice but if you work hard and attend his class regularly you shouldnt have a problem at least getting a B.
Well what can i say?THE WORST PROFESSOR IN THE WHOLE CAMPUS!!! I got a C by studying like a MULE!!! he is DISORGANIZED and Simple DOESNT KNOW HOW TO TEACH. HE EXPECTS THAT EVERONE TO KNOW ALL THE INFO. If you ask questions he would say LOOK IT UP.TEST ARE ABOUT70% OF THE CLASS AND EXTREAMLY HARD!! IF you are not majoring in BIOLOGY DO NOT TAKE HIM!
If you want to major in science related fields, do not take him. You will hardly learn anything from him. IMO he is not that great at teaching even though he seems to consider himself a decent teacher by throwing sarcastic jokes and analogies (sometimes races related). But you will get at least B if you study his learning objectives thoroughly.
He isn't as easy as I thought he would be. But he gives an objectives page of exactly what the test would be like, its just getting all the answers to the questions that takes some time. But put in some study effort as soon as you get the objectives and you will atleast get a B.Offers ExtraCR!
he is a funny, nice teacher. he gives study guides, so his class will be pretty easy if you find the answers and memorize them.
Mr Fretz is great! He is really funny, although not everyone got his humor. You can tell that he knows a lot about this subject and is helpful. make sure you show up to labs, turn in your homework and study for his quizzes.
He isn't easy as people say he is. Exams are 70% of the class. Tests are 50% short answer. Spelling counts!!
His a great professor overall. But i got to say, his class was vwey challenging since the test definition has to be 100% correct from the notes or either the book.. you cant write the definition you know it as, and etc. If you do bad on your first test, he gives you a extrecredit type opportunity. Its (2) article report about 5 pages minimum. Easy
This guys is the most horrible teacher at IVC. The grade u get in his class depends on how much he likes u not how hard u r trying...he acts like hes some celebrity and u ll have to go to his office even if u have a yes or no question...very unfair when it comes to grading...I have never had a D or even a C in my classes. All As and Bs and i got a
I love Fretz and I'm not even finished with his class yet! He explains everything extremely clearly and professionally and gives review sheets for tests which help out a lot, and he's hilarious! Glad I have him as one of my teachers this semester.
This class was difficult if you didnt go to class. but even if you did attend, the test are still very difficult. forget about multiple choice, more than half the test is explaining everything down to the T.
you must be able to write a 100 words in a minute to take notes in his class. he shows some powerpoint and let it on for less than a minute and i barely took 10 words. you also need to memorize every single words that he gave if not it'll be marked wrong on the test!!dun take him he is crazy
his lecture is not clear, teaches of powerpoint, but his study guid is very helpful, he actually tells you what is going to be on the exam, for example, his exams has short essays which he will give you 4 essay questions, and in exam it will be 3 of those. ALso he will tell you which words you must memorize and which one you need to know. Well i go
Teacher goes thru lecture & explaining the lab really fast & does not answer questions very well, but just right down what he writes on the board & study off the study sheet. Be sure to pick a smart group of people to be your lab partners & you'll be fine. I think it's a pretty easy class to take grade wise.
I LOVE HIM!!! He's really good and my favorite this semester! The tests are right from his notes and getting down the notes isn't too hard when they're RIGHT on the powerpoint or he writes them on the board. Plus, he gives study guides before each test and if you know the study guide, it's a GUARANTEED A!!! TAKE HIM1
I gotta say I hated bio before dr. fretz. but he makes it so easy to understand, I actually enjoyed the classes. he is a funny guy too.. just make sure you write lots of notes during class, and study the study guides and you should be able to do good. he is definitely one of my favorite teachers, very fair when it comes to grading, work for it!
Professor Fretz is one of my favorite professors at IVC. His lectures are interesting and tests are fair. He gives you study guides that contain most of the concepts on the test. I can't stress the importance of attending his lecture, unless you want to struggle for a good grade. Good notes will make studying for his tests much easier. Great Guy!
May be he is a good teacher for bio 1 but believe me he cant teach bio 93 ! his lecture is not clear.he actually tells you what is going to be on the exam but he grades so hard !! dont take him for bio 93 , u wont learn anything !!!1
Professor Fretz provides clear lectures, follows his syllabus (which leaves little room for confusion), and is absolutely hilarious. Definitely take his class for BIO 1 ? you will laugh and learn!
He CAN NOT teach bio 93 !he just read off the powerpoints!! he didn't post the power points online !! he grades harshly...overall the class was a joke and I did learn NOTHING !
I agree with others; he can't teach bio 93. he gives you study guide for each exam but they cover evrything he teaches and there are alot of questions you see in the exams that aren't addressed in the study guides. exams are hard and I agree he grades harshly
He is AMAZING. And quite easy if you keep up with his notes and lectures. His study guides are EXACTLY what the exam looks like. Yeah, you have to study, but it's a GUARANTEED an A if you do! I looooved him! Can't wait to take more Bio classes with him! :)
Fretz is amazing. I dreaded this class because I am not a science person at all, but I loved it, understood it, and aced it thanks to him. He's hilarious and disregarding his sarcastic facade, he is very helpful and approachable. don't need the book. study guides are very helpful. took lab with him also and it was really easy.
It was extremely easy, only 3 tests and he gave us study guides which basically told us everything on the test. I'm asian, and he was never disrespectful to me. His two favorite students were foreign! I asked him questions and he was very helpful. Easy A, but you don't quite learn Bio well...
very knowledgeable professor. very funny and very intelligent. strongly recommended and you will do well if you put in the effort, unlike some professor.
Great Professor. Crystal clear study guide - study hard and make sure your definitions are straight from lecture. Stay for the entire class to gain ec points. Extremely funny + super sexy.
He talks fast, but he gives you the list of things to study before tests. Labs are ok. Nice person and good teacher!
Easy A. Fretz is funny, which always helps get through class easier. The material he gives is very basic and straight forward. Fretz gives you a study guide for each test or quiz that has everything you need to know, and the study guide is very basic and simple. The tests are generally half multiple choice and half short answer.
I am currently in this class and it is good! Don't miss lab and don't be late. You will get a late mark on your homework and loose 50% of that lab work grade. Simple enough just be on time. He is funny easy to sit through and is sexy! Take this class for lab and you will enjoy it.
omg he is the best bio prof ever, i loved the class, his lectures are fun, 4 exams, study guide is given and be sure that you can answer all the questions on the study guide, he's sooooo kind, if you have any questions just go to his office and he'll give you the answer and explains it fo u untill he makes sure that you get the whole thing, perfect.
Very good teacher. He's not easy compared to Riegle or Rodriguez because he gives essay ? on the test. And he's very organized in teaching the material.
the only hard part is that ur grade consists of only 4 exams. however, the exams themselves are easy enough if u master the learning objectives (study guides) that he hands out. His sense of humor is precious and u have to go to every class
Funny. Abs. MUST attend class bc he gives definitions that vary from other sources (book, wiki). Can get away w/ not buying text IF you attend all classes. Start study guides when you get them, 100% of test answers are in the guide & he will give you the answers if you ask in class/office hours. Highly recommend. Grade is test scores+short paper.
He is a great teacher. He does expect a lot from his students, but he gives detailed study guides and will explain any questions. He is really funny and makes zoology a more relatable topic. It does require a lot of studying and paying attention, as well as attending all labs, but this class is worth it. I really enjoyed it!
Must attend all classes to get his def for terms..all tests are just like the study guides...class is boring overall...DO NOT purchase the textbook..total waste of money
You must attend every single class in order to get the information on what will be on the tests. Fretz has sarcastic, dry humor that is appreciated by some and hated by others. As long as you attend class and thoroughly know the learning objectives for the tests, you should be fine. Only one homework assignment, 4 tests, but you do have to study!
As long as you pay attention and take notes, getting an A is easy! Don't buy the book. Use the study guides for tests, and review your notes. Good teacher, very funny!
i really enjoyed this class. great professor with a funny personality. get to know him and take his class because you will be in for a treat.
Second time in one of his classes and I love em. he knows everything about what he teaches and will make you understand it. Includes subtle yet VERY funny humor here and there to liven up the class. You must study though but he literally gives you all the info you need to get an A. so come to class, study and you'll be fine.
Fretz he loves animals. When you are in lab remember to do your lab assignments 100% correct so you get full credit. Be clear and concise! Communicate with this instructor and get to know him! My advice be sure to write down everything he writes on the board, study the study guide he gives you for a Lab Practium a week in advance. Nice guy!
His class is great! I am in high school, and his class is so easy that I even got an A in his class. The best part is that he covers everything in class so I never needed to buy the textbook. As long as you study the Learning Objective thoroughly, you will do perfectly fine.
Don't buy the book and go to every class. If you're not in class you won't pass! His tests are exactly what are on his notes and study guide if you don't use his words you get marked Down
Attendance not mandatory, but essential for knowing what's on the test. You don't need the book. Take good notes, ask questions and study the learning objectives and you'll get an A. There are three exams, a weekly workbook, a final and a research paper.
you HAVE to be present for every class and take super copious notes. hes kinda sarcastic but hes really funny. i hate biology and he made it more interesting for me. i still got a C in the class but like i said science is not my thing. he gives you a study guide so as long as you study u should b okay
He is nice and has a dry sense of humor. Do the study sheet and you will do fine on the test. Do the extra credit it helps a lot. I didn't even buy the book and I did fine just going over lecture notes and studying with other students in class. He knows a lot about zoology and taxonomy. Don't worry about putting too much time into the paper.
He's hilarious. I really enjoyed his class because it was entertaining. He's a nice guy and pretty lenient on things. Just pay attention, show up to class, and don't worry about the text book.
He has an office hour, but whenever I went there to ask questions, he asks me back. Not a helpful teacher but fair. Got a B before final but ended up with an A. There are 4 tests total (3 midterms and 1 final). He gives study guide and longer written question ahead. make sure make his longer writen ahead before final because its sometime tricky.
You will laugh in his class, as long as it's not at your expense. He makes jokes about foreign sounding asian names and gay people - but that gets a laugh from majority of the class so it's okay. The key to acing his class is to take exact notes and reproduce them precisely, in his exact language.
If you like biology don't take him. He's a misanthrope. He hates himself and all humans. He doesn't teach you anything from the book.. it's mostly from his mind.
He is a tough instructor and strict grader. In order to pass the class, you must copy his lecture notes word for word. Sometimes, he does suggest on what to study on for the exam. Don't bother to buy the text for he even does not recommend to buy it. If you have difficulty with Human Anatomy, take it with another instructor.
Extremely hard because he is picky on word choice. Be sure to attend class for a fun clear understanding of material and do the study guide the minute you get it so you may check with him on word choice. It is highly essential. Easiness of getting an A depends on class type. Generally you have to work for it. A reflects the work you put in.
VERY HARD TEACHER. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
Very easy teacher for the bio lab, does require your answers on the quizes to be word for word from what he says. Amusing to learn from and talk to. Makes labs easy to understand and follow.
He?s a well-knowledge professor, but I don?t like the way he teaches and his attitude toward student. I don?t feel that I?m belonging to the class unless you are biology major. He confused me with his Power Point and stuff. I didn?t take BIO1 before taking BIO5. It was my biggest mistake.
He's very picky about wording on labs/tests. but then again, he gives you study guides and basically tells you what will be on the exam. Also, pay attention whenever he's lecturing because he's basically answering all the follow up questions assigned. He's very witty and funny, personally I enjoyed his class.
Hilarious guy. Easy class if you already know some basic chemistry (for first third of course). Gives a lot of material and notes you can study from, so you can't be unprepared for tests. Great class. :]
Do NOT take him. He is VERY picky. I do not recommend him. Funny teacher, but VERY VERY strict. The comments below that like him, are wrong.
He is very funny, but he is super strict ,if you misspill your answer is wronge, this is not fare and, for me as an international student I can't understand as much as native. So his tests are not the same as the LO. That what makes me angry. But he is a good science teacher after all.
Super Super Super easy! Just take good notes in class to study for the learning objectives. That is it.
You must pay attention and write down like everything he talks about in his lecture. Study those, and this class can definitely be an easy A. DO NOT SLACK OFF. The first test was incredibly easy, the second test was the hardest, and the final was in the middle. STUDY A LOT FOR THE SECOND TEST
As long as you attend all of his lectures and pay attention to what he says, you will be fine. The learning objectives he gives out is exactly what's going to be on the test. He's extremely helpful and HOT! Thank you Dr.Fretz, I loved your class so much<3
He is absolutely a great teacher. He lectured the whole time during his three hour classes, but not a one of them ever got boring. As for his tests, they are entirely based on his lectures, and he gives you "Learning Objectives" that tell you exactly what you need to study. However, his tests are no piece of cake, but study hard and you'll do fine.
No homework. Don't need the textbook at all. Take notes on his writing on board n from ppt and lecture. Must study for the study guide if you want an A. Helpful extra credits on exams and must attend the day exams given back bcaz he gives extra pts for attendance that day. Exams are everything on study guide. Nothing tricky. Recommended!
Amazing teacher ! Gives you a study guide on every test , super interesting/funny lectures,You dont need the book, honestly dont need to take notes just download his power points N study that, take him great teacher Very lay back TRUST ME! PS. BE PREPARED TO SEE SOME PRETTY GRAPHIC IMAGES , I WARNED YOU ;D
I LOVE THIS TEACHER! very interesting lectures and the tests are strictly by the lecture. DO NOT buy the book because if you do you will not need to open it once! He is a very funny and he knows his stuff! TAKE THIS TEACHER!
Professor Fretz is funny and interesting. His lab class was an easy A as long as you go to class and do your weekly lab. Take him, you will not regret it.
Any science lab is such a bore, but Fretz makes it bearable and manageable. He's lenient, funny (def sarcastic), and relatively easy. He grades labs very hard in the beginning but once you get the hang of it, it's easy to pass. Advice: Study the objectives for his quizzes word-for-word. He's picky about what you write.
Interesting class and easy. Also, the professor is pretty HOT.
Straight forward class. I did badly on the first test because I did not memorize the notes verbatim. After that I wrote down exactly what he said in class, made flashcards of them, and got an A on every single test after. I never opened my book so I don't recommend buying it.
Most difficult class I've ever taken at IVC. You have to copy the notes verbatim from the board and regurgitate them verbatim on them test. Even fussing up on one word renders the entire answer wrong. I don't recommend taking this professor for Biology.
I used to LOVE bio and he made me hate it! your grade is based on only 3 tests, he uses an out dated book in which "is wrong"(waste of $$) in his opinion so his tests are based on what he says only. hes boring, in a bad mood and doesn't care. HORRIBLE PROF.
He's full of himself, He sounds like weatherman, the plus is that it's easy to understand. during the lectures he picks out something he doesn't like about one of the students and he will ambiguously tell the whole class his opinion of it in a hateful (but jokingly) way. If you take him, make sure you don't have any fault and don't make mistakes.
DO NOT TAKE FRETZ IF YOU EXPECT ANY KIND OF HUMAN CONSIDERATION. 3rd week of summer I had surgery to remove a painful cyst from my spinal nerve. Post-surgery, I went to hand him my doctors note & negotiate a test date. When I tried to talk, he did not even look at me, told me he didn't care, and crumpled up my doctors note in front of everyone.
EH. Not bad or good. Take GOOD notes, memorize verbatum, copy exactly onto test. Very simple. Come to lecture everyday. Use notes more than the textbook. DO THE STUDY GUIDE (learning objectives). Tests are pretty tricky. Very sarcastic. I thought he was pretty sweet/nice about missing class or arranging something. Not a bad idea to take his class.
Easy A if you memorize everything on the learning objectives. It should take a solid 10-12 hours per test, so don't study the day before. I found Fretz kinda funny, as did most others. Really easy class. Would take him again if I needed to.
Hes not funny and makes jokes that are slightly offensive. He swears sometimes if that bothers anyone. Overall, this is like a slow high school class. You'll learn more in Psych of Sexuality. I took this class out of interest, kind of regret it.
Easy class very similar to a remedial high school class. You do NOT need the book which is unfortunate because it will not help with the test and sometimes even contradicts. Gives you many opportunities to get an A as long as you put in minimum effort of just attending class, gives lots of extra credit, and review sheets with all the answers.
Very easy class. You do NOT need the book or go to class if you can get the powerpoints from somebody. He's a pretty cool guy as long you're not stupid otherwise he'll make you feel stupid. Sometimes funny, sometimes he tries too hard though. overall great prof. and class. Passed without a problem
The class was great and it isn't too hard as long as you attend class and study. Study guides are provided which cover everything that will be on the exam. There's no homework grading is based on exams and in-class work (which is just copying information into a workbook). Professor Fretz does a good job teaching the material and is very helpful.
Don't bother buying the text book. Memorize the study guide and you'll be fine. Pay attention in class, he hates answering stupid questions. He's offensive but hilarious
Good professor. Very straight forward. Honestly do not buy the book unless you never show up to class. The learning objectives are exactly whats on his tests. I like his traditional attitude towards gender roles and he forsure missed his calling to be a weather man. It is hard not to pass his class. Just take good notes and study them.
He is the worst instructor I have ever seen in my entire life. He is full of complex, enjoyes all student be scared of him. He is the only instructor I see all his multiple exams has about 5-6 correct answers. if you choose 2 or 3 out of 4 correct answers he make it all wrong and you don't get any point for that question. do not even take a risk.
Simply the best Biology/Science teacher I've ever had, I go to UCLA now and this professor is still one of my favorites of all time, had to come back and rate him out of nostalgia of the class. He's really passionate about what he teaches, is very succinct and clear. Also hilarious.
Very intimidating which makes it difficult to ask questions, he is not afraid to make fun of students. Lectures the whole time in class. Tests require 8-10 hours each. I would not recommend this class if you are not a Bio major. What you won't find out until the end of the semester is that you can go to his office hours to check tour review sheet.
Very clear and straightforward in lectures and what's on the test. Take lots of notes, he tests you on his lectures not the book. He was pretty funny but makes fun of students easily so don't ask stupid questions. Tests were a bit hard but they are the majority of your grade so just study a lot. No homework and don't buy the book!
Really good prof The best one I had just take notes and you are OOOkay
very hard to get a A
Very entertaining with his dry humor. Gives little opportunities for points and is strict. Make sure you are on time and commit to finishing your Lab and studying for tests because they add up. He is kind of friendly but he gets ticked off at times especially when you ask him a question and he thinks you weren't listening. Overall average teacher.
study guide tells you what will be on the test
Fretz will be my most memorable teacher at IVC of all time. He's so funny that ppl don't understand his humor. I got an A and earned it. Show up, listen/record lectures-use them to answer learning objectives (study guide that's so straight-forward & helpful). I typed my LO (3 days), added pics, read them for 1 day; connected ideas. BAM SALMA HAYEK.
I, seriously, had to come back and rate this professor. Excellent professor and very very easy class its an easy A . I will recommend him. The most easiest class i Have ever taken.
Do not take. He'll mark you off for points if you are missing a single word in a definition or switch words or have incorrect grammar, even if the answer means the exact same thing.
A lot of students complain about how rude he is, which is true. It's hard to ask him questions without feeling like he will make you feel stupid for not knowing the answer
I dont understand all the positive reviews. Fretz obviously doesnt want to be there when he teaches and marks off a ton of points off your homework and tests... a lot of students are complaining
SO nitpicky when grading. he write mean comments on your papers if you get something wrong and he likes to make his students feel inferior
The exams are 100% based off the study guides given to you. He is a toughstrict grader though. There are 3 exams, 1 cumulative final, and a workbook of activities done IN class, and that's it. No homework. If you come to class, take good lecture notes, and know the study guide information, easy A.
I'm 100% sure he writes his own reviews. That is my only explanation for all the positive reviews. He lectures are so boring. Its so funny to look around the classroom, half way through the lecture to see half the class falling asleep. He is the toughest grader ever! Also, if you ask him questions he answer with such an undermining tone of voice.
Very sarcastic. When it comes to lectures he's clear and concise. Go over the learning objectives and you'll do just fine. Best bio professor at IVC hands down.
I took his human sexuality class and I was really surprised at how interesting he made it. He's really funny and makes the lectures less boring. Tests are really easy and you can study the day of and still get an A.
The class in itself is easy. Dont need txtbook He gives study guides for each test and everything on it just transfers onto the test. MAKE SURE to take good notes (word for word). Has a sarcastic sense of humor that some may find offensive but he grows on you and is actually a very nice person. Just show up to class, and don't ask silly questions.
Professor Fretz is awesome. He is extremely clear and helpful. He truly wants everyone to do well in his course. Concise study guides are given for each test, and tons of extra credit is offered. Interesting course, minimal timeeffort required for an A. Wish he taught more courses!
You do not need the book and the tests are solely based upon the lecture notes. He also does not post the notes on blackboard so attendance is mandatory if you want to pass this class. Funny guy and willing to help if you have questions
He is a tough grader. He expects word for word answers on the quizzes with what he says in his lectures. He does try to make the class entertaining though and is quite funny. As long as you follow the instructions and turn in your homework each week with some effort put into it and study from your notes for the quizzes you will easily pass.
He a stern kind of guy. I guess that's fine but for the most part he doesn't like it if you have multiple questions. I would take a different professor.
Straightforward class. Show up to class and take really good notes, word for word from his lectures. Doesn't post them on blackboard so attendance is mandatory. He gives a study guide for each unit which tells you what to expect on the test and goes over any questions you may have about it. The tests are short answer and multiple choice. Very clear
Terrible teacher. He makes Bio 1 very hard, his tests are miserable. He puts more than a couple right answer per question on the tests. Tests are really long. I would never recommend him. He thinks he is hilarious. He is not friendly at all. Plenty of people failed the class.
Very dry-humor, but that's right up my alley. You have to show up in order to do well. Since he doesn't post the power points online, you need to take really detailed notes. Test questions are straight from the PPTs and he hands out very detailed study guides. Down to earth and understanding teacher, fun conversations to be had!
Go to class, pay attention and study for the tests and it's an easy A. He makes lectures interesting so they fly by and is very clear about what will be on the test. I am taking extra science classes just to have him again! He's funny and nice.
Just go to class, take notes word for word, do the labs and you'll get an A. I don't know what other people are complaining about on here, but he was a great teacher. Study guides were all straight forward. He even goes over them with you! Such an easy class that it was basically a waste of my time, but I needed the credit! Labs are interesting!
Terrible professor, never smiles, not friendly at all. For those who is having trouble with Biology I would not recommend taking him, makes Biology even harder. Tests are extremely hard. A lot of students failed in the class.
The best biology teacher at IVC. All you have to do for his exam is just memorize things. He provides study guides for all of his tests and as long as you study off it, will get you a good grade.
Professor Fretz is one of the best teachers I have ever had. He is very knowledgeable and great at explaining very complex topics. He makes even a nearly three hour class super interesting and enjoyable, he has a sarcastic and dry sense of humor so I feel like I was just laughing the whole semester. Seriously, a stand-up guy. Very clear. *ThumbsUp*
Easy class
I was sick for most of the semester, so I didn't pass. But for all the lectures that I did show up for, they were extremely worthwhile, interesting, and pretty straight forward. He also very nice and likes to make silly jokes which made the class less boring. Only downside is he spoon feeds you the material, but the test are anything but easy.
Gives extra credit on test(about 5 points on each 70point-exam) , very good explainer, gives study guides for every test and will only test on the study guide. READ the study guide and you should be fine!
Dry sense of humor. You MUST go to class and take notes word for word. His one downside is he is EXTREMELY picky on wording on tests. So take HIS notes down in class, and memorize them. Study guides are crystal clear (including noting what will be an MC question and what will be a short answer). No surprises in this class. Also, he's hilarious.
He's got some great dry humor. He's very specific with everything he says and is picky yet fair. What I mean by this is whatever he says will be on the test and he will look for exactly that. If you give a general answer he will award some points, but will only award full for specific answers. He won't pick favorites or hold a grudge. Take notes!
He is very straight forward and quite strict when it comes to giving off points on the homework. Quizzes are easy if you just pay attention
Any grade lower than "C" in his class automatic F. Attend ALL lectures even if ur sick, tough it thru & do your best to take notes on everything & always go back on your notes to make a separate study guide which he provides. Fretz always makes time to go through the study guides with the class once/twice prior to the exams very generous.
Great profesoor , dont think about it, just go ahead. Im an international student and I did not face any difficulties.
Lots of great professors at IVC, this "man" is definitely not one of them. Avoid at all costs. Once you are on his bad side, you automatically fail. Surprised he still here, he not an asset to IVC. Hire someone else.
Professor Fretz is probably the best professor I have had at IVC. He makes you work for your grade, and actually TEACHES you about biology. Take him!
Fretz is a great teacher! you will do great if you really study what's on the learning objectives and ALWAYS come to class, if you dont you will be super confused. he posts NOTHING online so take lots of notes. tests are exactly like learning objectives but they're a mixture of written and multiple choice so again, you really need to study
Awesome professor, truly. His brand of humor is sardonic-I personally thought he was hilarious, but it may not be for everyone. If you want to pass: use the study guides and make sure to use HIS definition of terms (in this area he is very particular). This means you will have to show up to class. I definitely would take this class again.
Funny guy, huge ego. Lab quizzes are easier than lecture tests. However make sure you don't miss any labs as he will deduct 10% off your grade or fail you!!!! And the people who gave him a chili pepper obviously have daddy issues.
literaly just memorize the studyguide and tou will get an A on every exam. Super easy class. Professor does have a big ego and is a bit moody making him not very approachable. But overall just befried someone get there notes do the studyguide and u good. He doesnt do anything on blackboard so u would have to show up if u dont know any1
That ego is very huge. nobody ever wanted to ask him anything because he can be very rude.
I'm a high school student taking this course and it wasn't hard- IF you go to every class and take detailed notes. The tests are straightfoward because he gives you study guides and goes over them, and everything on it will be on the test. Make sure to always use his definitions word by word. He has a dry sense of humor & makes lecture interesting
This was the best science class I've taken in my life. Fretz knows his stuff, has a great personality, and an A is easily obtainable if you memorize his lecture notes.
worst.I'm writing down all his notes, doing the study guide but he still grades hard. He uses slides randomly. He doesn't give you a clear indication on topic transitions, what to write down anything; hard to follow. Doesn't repeat anything, goes by slides quickly, you have to write everything he says word for word on tests or it's completely wrong.
Really funny. Nice professor. Easy class. To get an A just make sure you study the study guide and do homework. I got over 100% in the class, just do your work and your good.
Very easy A if you study his notes thoroughly. Tests questions are almost the exact same as the study guide. He is very funny as well. Overall a great professor.
I got an A in this class thanks to a friend. It was near impossible for me to get even a B, but thanks to my friends study guide I was able to get an easy A. Long story short, always take this class with a friend who takes good notes. It will save your grades!
One of the worst teachers that I've ever had, Fretz is incredibly pompous, rude, arrogant, and sarcastic and does not deserve to work at IVC or any school for that matter. He's super obnoxious, and once your on his bad side, he will not help you if you have problems on the class. He has also called his students stupid & refused to help his students
I heard really good things about this prof but in my experience with him was not pleasant. I have never met a more rude prof. Book is not mandatory as he feels he's better than it...? Tests seem easy, but he'll mark it wrong if it's not the EXACT answer he wants. If you do well in BIO, you'll do fine, but if you struggle, avoid this professor.
Extremely rude! Talks a lot about his personal interests and wastes our time, then rushes through the slides. If you miss a word like THE, he will mark your entire answer wrong. Always in a bad mood and will get annoyed if you ask for help. Avoid at all costs, find another professor, or even take BIO1 at another college, but don't take him.
He is a very intelligent professor. Although he has many downfalls while teaching this class. Some of the following were issues I faced while taking his class: Answers need to be excatly verbatum, fast paced, uses perplexing language which some people dont understand, no second chances. I would def recommend someone else or drop the class.
You have to know all the notes verbatim to what he lectures in class or else you will fail. You can literally miss any single word in the definition that has no relation to the answer and still get the answer wrong. He is completely rude when you need him to clarify and doesn't really care about teaching. He just really likes biology.
Idk what the last person was talking about professor Fretz being difficult. In my Bio 1 class around 15 people got A's. If you study and know the study guide perfectly you're guaranteed A's on tests. If you dont study it you will most likely fail like the previous rater who got a D+. Solid teacher, would take again.
Fretz gives enjoyable lectures and knows his material but he is a very strict grader. Even if you write down the answer word for word from the textbook he will mark you wrong because it isn't the answer he gave in the lecture. Most students failed his BIO 1 class.
Fretz is a nice guy with an amusing dry sense of humor.
Fretz is alright. Has a clear grading system and as long as you follow rules you will pass. Labs are pretty easy and straight forward. His humor is sarcastic and relieves class stress. Do write what he writes on board because those will be the answers. Labs are done before scheduled time. Do recommend his class.
DO NOT EVER TAKE HIS CLASS, The worst professor that I ever meet more than half of the class was getting F after the second exam some of the students only get 7/60 when there only few student getting F, it might be the student's problem but when more than the half of class is getting F... you know really tough grader, makes you hate BIO
Had an awful experience in his class awful prof grading based on 3 exams do not take it and the grading is awful marks you wrong for the whole question if you are missing only a tiny point. not caring for students. DO NOT TAKE
lol know the study guide and all of his definitions word by word and you will pass. It's easy.
2 pieces of advice: 1. STUDY THE LEARNING OBJECTIVES. Everything on the exams come from those. 2. DO NOT bother him before class. He is happy to answer questions after class and during. He knows his stuff and offers a class w/out a book. Stellar professor & has made bio (an otherwise horrendous subject to me) entertaining and easy to understand.
Fretz makes bio easy! As long as you attend every class and take good notes, the study guides are simple and the exams are practically the same. No textbook required, 4 exams. Bio is always a lot of info to retain but as long as you start studying the learning objectives early, you'll pass just fine.
I am happy I ignored the bad reviews on him and took the class. This summer taking his class has been fun. Made an almost 3 hour lecture not dreadful. He's very straightforward. Zero surprises on exams and makes bio fun. His learning objectives are the test. Study those and A's on exams will be yours. Another plus, no book needed :)
Super difficult professor. I wouldn't recommend you taking his class unless you know you'll be able to handle MEMORIZING the study guide--and the study guide is based off of lecture, so if you miss a class, you're screwed. He is SO specific on tests. If you have the answer correct but you don't word it how he did in lecture, you aren't getting it.
Fretz reminds me of the high school teacher who's too tired every day and sick of everyone talking. Laughs seem to bother him and gets especially angry if students are being students before a lecture. The tests are long and he's terse when you ask him a question
I took Fretz for Bio lab and his lectures were extremely boring. He's very monotone and it made me doze off quite a bit. The labs were easy because we were doing it straight out of a lab book. Quizzes were easy too. If you come and do the labs according to his criteria, you'll get an A. He's just uninteresting and sarcastic. Also, he hates phones.
I really enjoyed having him as a professor. I know a lot of students say hes mean but once you get to know him he is actually pretty funny, nice and caring. He is particular about the wordings on his exam. Just make sure to take lots of notes and study the learning objectives.
He is very particular about the wording on tests. I thought I would do well in this class but unless you are great at memorizing you won't pass this class with an A.
He's nice (tho I don't think he liked me) & the class is clearly defined. Participate during labs & show up for attendance. He's kindof funny & tries to finish the labs earlier than the unnecessary 3 hours. Labs are graded on completion AND correctness, quizzes are laid out in study guides but usually fill in the blanks. He's a good prof overall
This professor stressed me out all semester, but overall the class wasn't as bad as it could have been. The labs are graded pretty harshly, scored quite low on the first few. The quizzes are not terrible, he provides a study guides and VERY QUICKLY goes over the answers. Make sure to pay attention to what he says because he is very precise.
If you had struggled with biology, I would recommend not taking his class. He talks a lot during lecture but it isn't focus on the main point. He talks very fast so it's really hard to note what he says. Test is not easy too.
Attend class, take notes, and study learning objectives which he passes out in class. He has office hours available so you can always meet with him if you have any questions. I definitely recommend him. It is biology at the end of the day, so you can't get away with not studying; however, everything you need to study is in the learning objectives!
Professor Fretz is by far one of the best professors i have had in college. Science is not my thing, but he makes class entertaining all while teaching the material. Everything you need to know is on the learning objectives he hands out for the tests. very caring, and is always willing to help, especially during his office hours! highly recommend.
The only way to fail this class is if you are lazy. This professor makes an otherwise dull class very interesting. He is so funny with a dry sense of humor and so engaging. I found myself reciting facts to everyone around me. The expectations are clear and he gives study objectives for tests and allows you to ask questions on them beforehand.
3 exams and 1 final plus an in-class workbook make up your overall grade (the workbook being only 11% of your grade). I wish I took another science or another teacher that offered HW. Really regretting taking this class, it's the hardest class I have ever taken. I am not a biology major and this subject matter is like a foreign language to me.
I am heavily concentrated on biology (even as a math major). He is the BEST biology professor I've ever had. I never bought a textbook, but his lecture along with PowerPoint was amazing and informative. He gives out study guide 1 week before exams and if you go to classes, take notes and understand everything on the study guide, it's an easy A.
I took his bio lab with his bio 1 lecture. We had to finish one lab assignment every week as homework (which can take up to 2-3 hours if the lab was long), but his lectures were interesting and he makes a lot of good jokes in class:) Easy A if u go to every class, turn in homework, and spend 1 hour for each quiz.
It is important to attend his lectures and take notes. He gives out a study guide which are so similar to the test. He gives extra credit on each test. I recommend taking his class.
The class is tough. But it's very straight forward, and easy A course if you take good notes in all the lectures, which are very enjoyable. The professor also passes out learning objectives every unit, which are basically study guides for the test. Review it along with your notes, and then the tests would be a breeze. Studying is the hard part.
PROS: gives you everything you need to get an A+ No homework Free points via lab notebook w/ answers given in class Quizlet has all the answers to the studygiude Study guide the whole test word for word CONS: Very heavy on memorizing Prepare for hours and hours of memorizing everything he writes and says TL:DR You'll do fine if you study hard
I love him. If bio doesn't come easily to you, spend 10-14hrs studying before each test, or you won't be able to get an A. No other homework though! Memorize HIS definitions, he's particular on wording on tests. BTW, his humor is dry and hilarious. Just write down EVERYTHING he says in lecture, STUDY 1hr/day several days prior to tests and bingo.
Hardest professor Ive had. You wont know your grade until end of semester. So if you fail at the end, you waisted all your time without even knowing. He doesnt have anything online. Lessons are very hard you cannot understand anything. Will never take this professor again. Would not recommend professor to anyone.
He lectures, you take notes, and do easy in-class work. No active participation required, group projects, or homework. Lectures are thorough explanations and visual drawings to really help you make sense of biology. And exams are just exactly what he lectured on. He doesn't care much whether you are on your phone or laptop. I miss this class somuch
I don't recommend taking his class, if you are a DSPS student. He is not working with DSPS office, so you will have lots of problems for exams. You never can't see your grading up to the end, you can't see your Bio class on Canvas! you'll have more than 1 answers to choose as best answer on multiple choice exams!!! He also speaks fast :((
I retook his class and barely got a B. It's a very challenging class. He grades by what he wants to see. He is salty as well. His lectures are pretty funny but you have to take notes everything that he says and talks really fast. His lectures are very informative, and he answers you ask. Too much to memorize, more than 150 things for one exam.
Although he seems like a nice guy and is quite funny, I would not take his class again. He shows power points for the most part, and goes through them extremely fast. If you're a slow writer, find another professor. But, he does give out helpful study questions for each exam.
Really great lectures with memorable real life examples. Study the learning objectives he gives out before each exam - they are exactly like the test questions, so as long as you got them down, you should do well. Don't skip lectures - the exams are based on his own definitions given in class, so don't rely on the textbook (not worth buying).
hes fine. take him if you need. not a very warm person but a fine professor. not an easy class, but its doable.
Professor David. J fretz class is full of knowledge and inspiration, and you can enjoy his sense of humor together. If you want to learn something and earn A, be diligent!. Use his official time. He always enthusiastically teach you. I took professor David. J Fretz two times (lecture and lab), I really enjoyed it and will study more by myself.
He is knowledgeable and humorous. His lectures are clear and is the main source of the questions for exams.
He has a dry sense of humor and at first I hated him. He lays everything out for you and if you don't come to cass and don't do the labs you will fail. He will stay after class and help you if you have questions. He does not like excuses or being late. Come prepared do the work and you will pass. He is rather funny once you understand his humor.
I took his Bio 1 class over the summer, and even though he said that he would online proctor the class in the class description, he didn't. He even made the tests open note the night before the test. His tests were out of 75 and if you get over 70 points, any extra points you got would be extra credit. His narrated PowerPoints were very clear also.
Omg his bio 1 lab is fairly easy and the labs are fun to watch and learn, however, the quizzes are not it. It is multiple choice and usually there is only 4 choice to pick from. But not his quizzes; he gives you 7 different choices that some are similar to each other which confuses you and gives you a lot of questions and not a lot of time.
I took him online over the Spring for Bio1, hes a super tough grader, good luck if you take the lab. If you email him a question he either ignores you completely or responds coldly. Giving a 1 because he doesnt communicate, oh, and you will never know your grade! There is no way to check your grades in canvas. Like, What? Very weird...
Doesnt require lectures & doesnt give home work, just quizzes that you can do anytime before the midterm. His quiz & exam questions are based only on his lectures, and the exams often have repeat questions from the quizzes. Overall, the least stressful class I took this semester, would recommend! May be difficult to contact outside of class.
Its a no for me
READ THIS: Took course online. Only provided lectures to be tested on. REALLY TAKE YOUR TIME IN TAKING NOTES. It will determine your grade. Focus on the learning objectives. Quizzes and exams are open notes. no proctorio although he does mention it in syllabus. Just take good notes and you will do good! hard topics but not bad with notes
Run Now! He is trying to trick students minds - very sneaky. His words from his emails/messages are very manipulative to where you would think something is wrong. The Quizzes so tricky, so all things we studied, his test will twist your mind. He wont give you pdf slide to learn from but listening is a must by force + trickiness, 80% will fail/drop
I am 100% sure this Professor has a high amounts of drop out/ew's/withdrawls/F's as the way this professor is teaching, will only teach about 10% of students in a class, in person or online. His test tricks you to a point where every answer has 1 word different, and says zoom is for losers where his goal is to test his way of teaching to fail many
Bio class that's focused entirely on lectures, all of which you can download if need be. Professor Fretz himself uses a lot of dry humor and has relatively entertaining lectures. The class was completely open notes, but every question and answer is from the lectures, NOT the book. Also, be prepared to never have the opportunity for extra credit.
Took this class in 2021. No zoom no proctorio so far. Graded only on 4 quizzes and weekly lab hw. Need to watch recorded lecture (1-2hr) to complete lab hw (takes 3-4hr). EXTREMELY PICKY on lab. Study learning objectives for quizzes. God quiz answers have like 8-10 choices and you don't know whether it has 1, 2, or 3 answers. I cry
He assigns no homework, his whole grade book is quizzes, lectures, and tests which is super nice. However, he'll assign up to 4 50 minute lectures a week and will just blurt the information in the video so you have to constantly pause, thus, taking way longer than 50 minutes to finish the lecture. Beware, he gives no extra credit!
He is OK as an instructor but goes very fast on chapters so be ready for that! Tough grader but the good thing about quizzes he gives a study guide that almost 100 % matches the questions on quizzes. My advice is be very close and exchange numbers with your classmates since 4 of you will be doing labs together during the whole semester which helps
His exams are clear: if you can excellently answer ALL learning objectives, you'll do well; exams are based directly on these objectives - no tricks. That said, the hard part is making comprehensive, yet concise notes to help you study. This class requires a lot of study hours: though it's not on the syllabus, you might have to sign your life away.
Exams are straightforward. Know the learning objectives (that he gives you) well and you'll be fine. Make sure you spend a lot of time studying and making good notes! Everything comes from lectures. The textbook is not needed, so don't buy/rent it. The professor is pretty funny. Be diligent and stay on top of things. Be serious, but crack a smile.
All the information for exams is in the lectures, and you're given a sheet with clear learning objectives to prep for the exam. Take good notes and study enough, you'll do fine in the class! Professor Fretz is hilarious and it is easy to contact him for questions.
Professor David is an awesome professor. Highly recommend taking him as he made the course a lot easier. Very clear with instructions regarding tests, quizzes, and deadlines. One thing for students that are taking his course, start studying beforehand for tests and keep revising it everyday since there is a lot of information.
If you aren't good at bio or a fast learner, this professor is not for you. he goes through material pretty fast in-person lectures and he tends to go off-topic mid lecture, I'm always so confused. if you mess up an exam, its hard to recover since your grade is only based off quizzes, exams, and 1 project. he's very smart and well respected tho.
Beware, I believe that most of these positive ratings are written by him, he has a very distinct way of writing. I registered with Fretz because of the good ratings, but his teaching style is the worst i've experienced at IVC. He barely response to emails, and his lectures are fast and difficult to understand.
The gonad
Professor Fretz was an amazing biology teacher. He is very lecture-heavy, but if you pay attention, the exams are fairly easy. He has a good sense of humor and the labs are very easy. Attendance is only required for the labs and there is no other homework aside from labs.
I took this class as a GE and I did do good but I had to really try to do good, way harder than my major classes. This professor absolutely blows, all he does is look at his pp lectures and read it alost looks like he is learning off his slides. I have a good feeling this guy makes accounts to raise his professor rating. HIS RATING IS NOT ACCURATE!
His class is very lecture heavy and you have to pay attention to everything. All he does is read off the PowerPoint and go at a very fast pace. For some reason, he gives mp4s of the PowerPoint instead of giving legitimate PowerPoint for the content he is talking about. Very rude. Not many assignments that can help boost your grade.
Class was all lectures, which consisted of him reading off slides too quick to the point where you can't get complete notes down. As others have said, he never, not once, input grades throughout the semester, you must wait until the last week of the course to know how you're doing. Quiz questions are often misleading or trick questions.
Very funny guy, this class is straight up just memorization (a lot), gives you a study guide that tells you what's on the test. Only complaint is that he isn't very tech savy, uploads his lectures as videos that vary in quality, kind of frustrating. Overall easy class, sometimes gives extra credit just for showing up so keep that in mind.
Professor Fretz is hilarious and makes the class more fun, there are four lab quizzes and three exams(no final), for which he gives study guides. Pretty much everything on the exams and quizzes is from the study guide(learnig objective), so as long as you study the topics covered on the study guide, you should be fine. His canvas page is a mess tho
This class was a mixed bag, if I was to be honest- the examinations were very clear, with lots of extra credit opportunities. However, the logistical end of the class was quite bad, as his bookkeeping system for grades was inscrutable, and the way his powerpoint lectures were uploaded was very confusing- they were uploaded in mp4 format, not .pptx.
Labs weren't really difficult. Lectures weren't particularly stellar since he'd usually just read off his slides, but he'd sometimes stall on uploading the powerpoints on canvas so there's that. Learning objectives are basically what's on the quizzes and exams, but the hard part is just remembering every little detail or identifying pictures.
Professor Fretz was pretty funny and his class wasn't too hard. There is a semester research project which was pretty easy. There are quizzes online for each chapter which had multiple attempts on it. The Exams in person needed a lot of memorization. If you memorized the learning objectives you were good for the exam, plus he gave a lot of EC.
Professor Fretz is THE WORST professor I have ever had. His lectures are extremely fast paced and there is no time to write anything down. He hides his grade sheet on a word doc at the bottom of the page doesn't update it. His tests have lots of typos and require you to remember exact explanations from his lecture.
His tests have lots of extra credit questions on them normally; His lectures are not very helpful though. Goes through slides very fast. He does use test questions directly from what was mentioned in lecture, so you do have to pay attention & show up. Labs are graded easy if you complete them.
Professor Fretz is the ultimate professor: a good sense of humor, includes odd but interesting answer choices on tests, referenced Jerry Lee Lewis once, appearance reminds me of Ronald Reagan. Great.
Professor Fretz is awesome. He has this type of humor that just gets me cracking up. If you take Fretz it is REALLY important you attend every lecture. He posts learning targets and literally everything on the learning target is the test. Everything on the learning target will mention some sort of info you get at the lecture. Easy and fun class.
Prof. Fretz is a great professor. I heard he's more interactive in his labs than his lectures. Goes over slides fast, but he'll post his recorded lectures. learning objectives are all that you need to pass the exams and quiz There is extra credit in the quizzes and in the two midterms. Just pay attention, attend class, study hard and you'll do fine
I LOVED Professor Fretz! He was SO funny and his lectures were so fun! This class is tough I will say, but if you put in the work and ask him for help if you need it, you will do just fine. He really wants to help those who put in the work and trust me, he can help a lot. If you are not one of those students, he is not for you.
Fretz does NOT care about the pace at which he teaches. He is so quick that it's difficult to take notes, and he makes us watch a 1-hour video if we miss/review any lectures at home. I end up not taking notes anymore and caring, which is terrible. His lectures aren't dull, though; they're sometimes funny. Tests depend on his learning objectives.
Professor Frets makes his test 100% his study guide. He has no final. You barely have to try on the labs to do good. He gives a lot of extra credit. He is very funny.
Fretz is a pretty funny person and is very nice when it comes to giving out extra points on quizzes. There were 4 quizzes and each had a study guide which he gave us all the answers to. Overall he kinda just shows you what to do and then leaves you to go do your thing as he watches. I liked the class and for a lab class it was pretty simple.
Professor Fretz is a pretty good teacher. His class consists only of tests and quizzes, with no homework. Quizzes are done at home, and the tests are very lecture-heavy. Everything on the tests will come from the lectures. He states that sources taken from outside the lectures will not receive credit, and terms must be from his lectures.
Hard and lecture heavy teacher, gives out learning objectives prior to each exam that are identical to the exam. I recommend this teacher only if you have excellent study habits or else you may fail. The class is straightforward, 3 exams (half written/half multiple choice),online quizzes, and one workbook from in class activities. He has jokes too
Professor Fretz is a funny guy who makes lectures engaging. Tests are straight from the study guides, so attend class and use unstuckstudy ai to ace the exams. Tough but manageable with effort.
Labs are easy. He's sarcastic and hilarious. 3 lecture exams, 4 lab quizzes. They are not hard if you actually study. Its just memorization, don't study last day and you'll do fine. learning objectives are basically whats on the quiz/exam + xtra credit points and curves. does go fast during lectures tho. I dont recommend written notes. Type, trust.
I'd highly recommend him. Professor Fretz, beyond providing engaging and funny lectures, outlines almost exactly what you need to know for every exam with the learning objectives, making this class manageable to study for. Re-watch lecture videos and go to office hours in order to get a better understanding of the content and to ace the exam.
Please lock in right at the start of his class. Please re-read your notes and memorize them. It will cost you so much if you mess up on the first exam. His grading criteria is exactly like his learning objectives. Please, PLEASE do not procrastinate. You will do fine if you just lock in right away. SWEAR.
I loved him. Good humor. His learning objectives are exactly what you need to study, and what's on the exam. Always up to explain something you don't understand, and many extra credit opportunities.
Professor Fretz's class is very lecture-heavy, and he emphasizes using his exact definitions from lectures. Grading is strict—forgetting a single word can result in no credit. Lab work is graded even more harshly, with points deducted for minor issues like drawings not meeting his standards.
The class is solely based on lectures. He uploads them but he doesn't always post on time. Look at the syllabus/class outline because most of the information he tells you is irrelevant. Very inclass work so tests determine your grade. No hw
You'll basically be copying the slideshow definitions during the entire lecture. He sometimes skips some vocab or goes over it really quickly, so you'll most likely have to show up to office hours or ask during lab. There's a lot of content and he's very particular about the wording so it's a pretty difficult class. Very funny professor though.
As long as you can memorize you will do fine. All tests are based on lectures but you dont have to go to every lecture imo. No final and labs are basically coloring papers but his last test oh my days that was horrid. Lab quizzes are easy as long as you know the images. Just be careful of the last exam it was 50 pages of straight memorizing
Overall, a good class and professor. It's a lot of memorizing so do not slack off. Take time to study and you should do fine. I wish I had spent more time studying for tests and quizzes. It is a very lecture heavy class so type the notes on the slides and you will be good.
Straightforward class, 3 tests/4 quizzes. Lectures are an hour of copying notes from slides, so I rlly recommend typing. Learning objectives given each exam are exact to the test, w/ EC. Just be aware this class is ALL self studying. It's definitely possible w the learning objectives, but use your time wisely, and do well on the first test.
His grading can be weird and can take a while for it to be graded, and he doesn't respond to emails on time. His exams have errors at times, along with info. If you study enough and pay attention you will def get a C/B. I have to do P/NP cause I had no clue if I would get a B or a A and he didn't grade the final until weeks after.
didnt wear my seatbelt on my way to class hoping i wouldnt make it
If you don't already know biology well, this class is really hard. The exams are proctored, super fast, and also have short essay questions. If you don't have everything memorized and spelled perfectly, you'll probably fail. His exams are worth the most points, and everyone agrees there isn't enough time. Don't take if you don't have too.
impossible to get a bad grade in this class. The Learning objectives are exactly what's on the tests and quizzes. Tips: 1. Dont write,TYPE your notes, lectures can be fast 2. the learning objectives ARE the study guide. 3) DONT SKIP, lectures are posted much later.
Super funny guy, he managed to keep me awake and focused during 3 hour evening lectures, not many can do that. He basically tells you exactly what will be on the test, plus provides a full page of extra credit. Plenty of people had over a 100% in his class.
BIO 1 is a non-major required biology class that is overall pretty easy. Your grade is pretty test heavy, but he lists out everything you'll need to know specifically for each exam. It's biology, so ofc it's primarily memorization, but he makes it easy for you. If you do not do well on exams, or subsequently his class, it's entirely your fault.
Professor was fun for both online and lab class! For lecture, there were quizzes every week and 3 exams. Lab was four quizzes. So long as you studied through the learning objectives, you will pass. Copy his definitions for written responses. Try not to skip class for lab, as it can tank your grade. If you get sick, let him know when you come back.
Has you buy a book that you will never use because he only uses his own info even if it's wrong. Only gives you 50 to 55 mins for exams that have 60+ questions some being written all proctored. If you don't listen to every word he says you will get his essay questions wrong-it must be his wording only NOT the book. Do not take unless you know bio!
Just don't take if you do not need to. Bio as a GE class should not be so hard! It was my hardest class, and I want to go into Law. No time to even think during a proctored exam. He is nice, but really bad at answering emails.
Trust me and take elsewhere he is a very unfair grader his exams are all that matter in this class and you don't get much time to do them.
please ignore these salty kids in these reviews. his class is seriously a free A. His study guides (learning ob) is LITERALLY word for word the exact same questions on his exams.Such an empathetic prof that helped me through a pretty hard period and really does care for you. take his class + he's funny sometimes
Do not take David Fretz's class. Thank me later or find out for yourself…
Learning objectives helped tremendously. Heavily relies on exams tho. Keep an eye on deadlines (missed a few quizzes). No assignments. No extra credit. No late credit. Lectures are a-okay. Grades are manually graded on a spreadsheet. If you're taking this class, you might need to lock in lowk. Otherwise funny and respected professor.
DO NOT TAKEI saw that there was missing work on my grade sheet from three years ago so I emailed him asking if I messed up.He sent me a one sentence reply that was very condescending. After the first exam he shamed students who didn't pass by telling everyone what they got wrong in an email.Hours of lectures a week and a book that he says is false.
His lectures go by so fast, he skips slides and he doesn't care if you miss notes. So type them, don't write it out by hand. His tests are lightwork. He literally tells you what's exactly on the tests/quizzes. Just an average joe. Kinda mean. He got nicer later on, maybe he got laid....
If you're not getting an A in this class, what are you doing? Just attend class and type out the lectures. And everything on the quiz and exams are listed on the learning objective he gives. Bad reviews are from ppl that probably didn't attend class, didn't take notes, or waited until the very last minute bc this class is an EASY A.Just type FAST
Dont listen to the bad reviews. All you have to do is take good notes and look at the learning objectives. I took this class over the SUMMER, meaning it's faster paced. And I missed TWO WHOLE quizzes and still ended up with A-. Also took bio80 with him, and a group of friends consistently scored over 100 on exams. skill issue if ur failing
pretty easy course if you can self-learn, easy material. but posts slides way too late and gives little time to study for. there's learning objectives for everything and it's just all memorization. easy A but can be stressful if you can't self-learn. attitude can be a little discouraging, but pretty nice guy when you talk to him individually.
Memorize all learning objectives and you'll do fine on the test, they're basically word for word. Don't think he knows how to use canvas bc he made us turn in a presentation via usb, and has lots of trouble making the quizzes. The quizzes are easy and have multiple attempts. Gives us a separate email for contact but still replies super slow.
By providing learning objectives that you can just memorize for the test, getting an A was not super difficult! Note taking was difficult as he goes really fast and skips a lot of information, but as long as you do the learning objectives for the lab practicals and tests, you can get by. Seems like a good guy, just didn't really get to know him.
He's often in a bad mood, gets annoyed by questions, and makes you stay until the end of lab (even if you're done). Goes through notes EXTREMELY fast. Learning objectives help, but be ready to self-study. He makes you get the textbook even though it's never used and complains it's wrong. Lab quizzes are free response and difficult.
