I'm doing okay in his class but I'm STRUGGLING!!!! He rarely teaches things in the book and focuses mainly on plants and insects!! If he's teaching ecology, you might want to take him..but for Gen Bio, DON'T! When it comes to quizzes, they're hard because he doesn't teach. So if you are planning on taking him, expect to read a lot to learn and pass
He's super into Bio. He talks about his projects and shows pictures all the time. He really knows his stuff, but he seems to forget that he's teaching general bio I. His quizzes are outrageously hard. He barely covers anything in lectures and seems genuinely puzzled when most of the class fails a quiz because he skips over material.
Dr. Knochel is a vey nice person! He is fun to talk to and he knows a lot about plants and insects. However, when it comes to teaching General Bio I, he fails...he spends entrie class periods talking about random things instead of going over material. His tests/quizzes are hard and you bascially have to go home, read the book and teach yourself.
Dr. Knochel is one of the best teachers I've ever had. I am interested in going into nursing or becoming a physician assistant and he really encourages those of us that are interested in the medical aspect of biology. He's very smart too and challenges us. Highly recommend him if you're serious about biology.
Great teacher. One of the best I've had. Very inspiring if you're thinking of going into the medical field.
I was amazed w/ Dr. Knochel. He's the 1st Prof I've had that genuinely cares about students. He's very approachable. You do need to put in some effort and read some to get the detail. Quizes are fare and in line w/lectures, not like some other Profs I've had. Bottom line, you get what you put in to it. Treat it like high school and you'll fail.
Dr. Knochel is absolutly amazing. He is very educated in his field. He is great one on one as well in class. I remember he said something at the begining of class, "I cant open your skulls and pour information in so your gonna have to put effort in." Ive had alot of college professors and Dr. Knochel is one of the best!
Dr. Knochell, while sorta spacey is a really charismatic professor. He made me fall in love with Biology and consider it to be my major. He makes sure to let you know of different types of fields in the real world where bio. is used. Overall a great experience, you do have to either read the book or go to SI. esp if you're a little dense Good Luck!
He is a really nice guy, but you will def have to study hard and read the book for this class. He gives plenty of online notes that help. He goes on a lot of tangents about weevils/bugs or shows irrelevant videos. When asked if we would be tested on the material he was stumped and said no. Nice guy, but should be teaching plants/bugs instead
He does not really teach much. You will have to do mostly self-teaching and SI. You can get an A in the class, but it won't be because of Professor Knochel. His quiz questions are very good conceptually, but he doesn't prepare you for them. He really likes Weevils. Unfortunately slides on them aren't always relevant when talking about mitochondria.
Very fair. You can tell he really cares about teaching.
He has youthful energy that is a lot of fun in class if you enjoy biology. Be careful! His test's aim to trick. He uses lots of "D: Both B and C" and "D: All of the above" and they are often the correct answer. His love of biology comes across and students benefit. Love him! Would take another class by him, if one was offered!
Very nice person!!! Sometimes his lecture's can be very confusing or unclear. I have struggled with understanding the lectures sometimes because he goes off a tangent a lot.
He is a really nice guy and really wants to help but I honestly had to learn everything by myself. His quizzes barely had anything to do with the lecture and I went to SI to learn the material. The quizzes were very tricky but if you understood the material very well and are very good at answering trick questions, u should be okay with the quizzes.
You will enjoy being in his class. Do not miss any of his lectures. Pay particular attention to every single word he mentions during the lecture.Good luck!
His exams are verbatim what you find in your textbook. If are self-motivated and can teach yourself stuff, then this is class you can pass. He should NOT being teaching Biology 101. I am a straight A student and I got a C; a lot of the students in there are taking it for the second time. In other words "You have to REALLY want it".
Dr. Knochel's passion for biology is quite obvious in his teaching. He really loves what he teaches. That being said there are times when he's a little unclear and his quizzes are worded fairly tricky at times. There are MUCH WORSE professors out there and I'd suggest him to anybody who has a passion in biology and is willing to read the textbook.
I'm struggling. This is the hardest class I've ever taken. There is an expectation to MASTER the material, which is hard for someone that is taking it as a mandatory class and not in the field.
He cares about this subject, I'll start with this. I am a freshman this year and this is my HARDEST class. I went to help sessions 3 days a week. His powerpoints are a bit ridiculous, tons of pictures and charts. He is very confusing, and you need to be persistant in this class. GOOD LUCK - but if you want a little easier class, don't take him!!
Uses real world examples and is a challenging but fun and enriching class. Dr. Knochel has an effective teaching style unlike any other professor I've had. Provides a lot of resources to help you succeed.
Hardest class as a freshman. It's hard to understand him during lectures and quizzes and exams are hard. Powerpoints are somewhat useful, but have brief details in my pov. You're gonna have to STUDY STUDY STUDY for his class, going through powerpoints and the book.
This was probably the hardest class I've ever taken and I'm a 4th year college student with a BA in something else. Really interesting material, but you have to DEDICATE your life to learning it or you will fail quickly. Knochel is a nice guy, very charming, even though he seems to still be trying to find his footing as a lecturer.
He has great intentions for wanting to challenge his students...but sometimes the work load was just overwhelming rather than a healthy challenge. Other Bio TA's said his class is much harder than the Bio 1 classes they've taken. It's still possible to do well. The LA's help! READ THE BOOK! and go to class! I don't recommend for working students.
This is not a class you can slack off in. Knochel is clearly very interested and smart, but his lectures and powerpoints are sometimes extremely confusing. I had to basically teach myself most of the material, as his powerpoints didn't actually contain much information, and his lectures were very fast paced.
He is a great teacher for more advanced bio courses, however is FAR too in depth for gen Bio students as he requires them to have a knowledge of Chemistry BEFORE taking the Gen Bio 1 course. This leaves students who are there to understand the fundamentals..rather bewildered.
He was nice in the beginning but as the semester progressed he began to be outrageously tough for a beginners course and really unfair.
Study hard daily. He does treat all students with respect and provides lots of handouts that help me score higher on quizzes. You can't just go to class and think you'll do well. Once you get used to the level of learning he expects you can hopefully suceed.
Great class--tough but the support is there if you go after it.
He's amazing and very humorous! If you are into the work, you will like attending his class! He turns out to be quite charming as well.
He is very humorous which makes learning enjoyable! And which is why he became the first teacher to be my crush! I wish he taught General Biology II! I'd love to stare at him and learn again! Oh and he is pretty fare on the grading system! Trust me!
Lectures were boring i honestly wouldn't have gone if there wasn't in class points. If you are struggling try going to SI it is extremely helpful!
Dr. Knochel is a kind and affable teacher that really cares about his student's success. He is very approachable and willing to help. Lecture is pretty disorganized, I gave up on taking notes, too much jumping around. Overall, the course was easy and graded very generously, got 105%. I'd recommend him unless you really need regimented structure.
Prof K. class is very interesting, he gives students a lot of oppportunity to do better in class. ATTEND CLASS regularly and pay attention and you'll pass. I could have had an A if I didn't miss a few classes because he gives in class extra credit and his exams are not difficult.
Dr. K is an incredibly nice guy, too nice to some of the rude people in my class who wouldn't shut up. Some material is a little challenging, but those complaining about difficulty will not succeed in science. 105 was not at all difficult. Lecture can be a little scattered, but I would definitely recommend his class.
Knochel is a nice guy and a great professor. Sometimes it will be hard to follow him in lecture so it's important that you do your reading prior to class. If you do all that is required of you, you'll do well. If you do the minimum, this class will be more difficult.
Dr. Knochel is nice and helpful. His lectures are fun but hard to follow. He gives a lot of extra credit opportunities. I enjoyed his class
Dr. Knochel does not give good lectures in class. His quizzes have nothing to do with the readings or the lecture. Super hard.
Dr. Knochel is difficult to follow during lecture. He does not delve into the material and jumps from one topic to the next. The grade is based on weekly quizzes, which is usually over info that wasn't in his lectures. There is no time to get a firm handle on the information before he's moving to the next quiz.
AMAZING!!!!! Enough said!
Dr. Knochel is a super nice guy but lectures are incredibly hard to follow. Tests are tough but doable if your read the text book and draw everything! Seriously... draw the concepts.
you have to teach yourself wastes time
Dr k an incredibly kind man. He was available to help but has high expectations of the students to study for themselves. His lectures were a basic overview of the high points and he gave us huge amounts of external resources to support us. The quizzes were on the information given in the lecture in generalbut learning the concepts was up to us too!
Read the book. Do the Connect reading assignments, even if they aren't for credit. Lectures elaborate on reading, so if you don't read, its difficult to do the quizzes. That being said, just study the quizzes for the final. Most of the questions are similar or the exact same.
He is not clear in the way he teaches. Uses a lot of examples to explain one specific topic but there is no concordance between what he asks in the tests and what he explains.
I really enjoyed Bio I with Dr. Knochel. Its definitely not the easiest class in the world, but if you pay attention during lectures you should be fine. If he says something 2-3 times, it will more than likely be on the quiz, also if he keeps coming back to a specific diagram, be prepared to label it for a quiz.
Hard to follow lectures, but made a boring topic more interesting. Tests are difficult. I scored well, but when I left I thought, "That could be a 75% or a 95%"
Dr. Knochel is a great instructor. If you attend class and study on your own time you'll pass the class. He tries to make the lectures more interesting and really reiterates things so that we can get it stuck in our head. He likes to crack jokes as well. The quizzes every week aren't too hard if you study for them.
Dr. Knochel is a very great professor. There are weekly quizzes and as long as you read the chapters you'll do fine. Going to class is essential to your grade, because he uses Clicker questions. He is a great professor!
Brings a lot of energy to class, clear expectations and lectures are easy to follow. He does expect you to be on your toes and has graded in-class participation, weekly reading, quizzes and short homework. He can go a little overboard on the powerpoint, but never reads straight from the screen. Show up, pay attention, walk away with an A.
I took Gen Bio I with Dr. Knochel he is a very nice person, but his lectures are hard to follow. You will have to teach yourself a lot in order to do good in the class. It is hard to keep an A in the class but B is easy to get.
Took Dr. Knochel for gen 1 & 2. Very knowledge, clear lectures and a cool guy overall. No push over on quizzes and exams. An A is very possible with plenty of reading.
Dr. Knochel will make you love biology. He is passionate about the material and eager to help you learn it. He is the first professor I have had at UCD that provides (almost too much!) supporting material on canvas. If you take the time to study the guides posted and take the homework seriously, you will earn an A. Extra credit is given as well.
Best professor I've had at UCD!!! He makes it so that you're actually learning and not cramming stuff into your head. There was a quiz every week but only one final exam which was really nice because if you did horrible on quizzes it wasn't a big deal. He also curves his grades a lot. Read and do the material and you should earn an A or B.
legit
He was such an amazing professor! His lectures are really great and in depth! He finds relevant outside materials and brings them to your attention. He also shows videos of concepts. His tests are not hard if you pay attention, take good notes, and devote plenty of time to studying. Take lab at the same time, helps solidify concepts!
Great teacher. The class is not easy, but he is very clear about what you need to do to succeed. STUDY THE LEARNING OBJECTIVES! I know lots of teachers have learning objectives that have nothing to do with the tests and quizzes. His DO! He also records lectures so you can view them later. Unfortunately you have to go to class tho he uses clickers.
Awesome guy, his lectures can be kind of long and hard to follow, and there was a decent amount of homework in the class. Very slow to give feedback on grades and assignments but the class was interesting. Very quirky and random sense of humor. Cool dude.
Dr. Knochel is really funny. Totally worth taking with him
Dr. Knochel is a great biology teacher. It's not an easy class, so expect to put work into it. I also attended SI- THIS HELPED A TON! I would recommend attending SI as well. He was always very thorough and willing to help me when I had a question. He wants you to do well and he is reasonable. He's also super adorable!
There was a lot of material on the tests that we never talked about in class. He was a couple chapters behind the other sections. But he's a nice guy and definitely knows biology.
If you don't read the textbook seriously, you won't pass. It was pretty challenging for me as I didn't understand much from his lectures since it's hard to focus, so I had to read the book while LOOKING AT THE LEARNING OBJECTIVES. I think listening to the recorded lectures helps too. The clicker questions are important to help you raise your grade.
I took him for both Gen Bio 1 and 2. He's a pretty good teacher and definitely knows what he is talking about. There's a lot of homework, but it's not actually hard. His tests are kinda hard but it is possible to get good grades on them, overall it's a pretty easy class if you pay attention, study and do the hwk and online quizzes.
I had Dr. Knochel for Gen Bio 1 and 2. His lectures were easy to listen to since he throws in an occasional joke here and there. His quizzes can be tricky, but they are not difficult. Just paying attention in lecture will not be enough. READ the book and attend SI and LA sessions if you can, they are very helpful. I absolutely recommend him!
I definitely cried quite a few times taking this class. The quizzes each week were very difficult. However, the lectures, the teacher assistant help, and the online book quizzes helped a lot. Without Dr. Knochel's dedication and toughness there's no way I would've learned as much as I did.
Online evolution (summer). Was an intense class with a lot of reading but good interaction. Enough support from Dr. Knockel and interesting topics to learn the material. I would recommend.
If you take evolution online be prepared to read the textbook because NO lecture slides or any sort of supporting material is provided. It is a self-taught class. If you are good at reading even the smallest text boxes for quiz/test questions then this class is for you, if you however expect a professor to TEACH then this is not the class for you.
He may want you to show up and be attentive, but even if you don't you can still pass. Extremely boring and lectures are long and monotonous.
I hear a lot of good things about Dr. Knochel, but it's probably because i took such a dry class such as Biological Discoveries. He doesn't care about getting to know the class, even though it is a FYE class, and we only have like 20 people in the class. We used to have homework at the beginning of the semester, but we kind of just stopped...
Doesn't give good information during lectures. Doesn't prepare you for tests. Get ready to teach yourself everything. Would not recommend taking from him.
David Knochel is a SUPER nice guy. He is responsive, understanding, and very flexible. However, his quiz and test questions are literally made to fool you. He gives ridiculous questions and insane amounts of reading. I really like him but his format for his class is pretty terrible.
I came to UCD with few expectations. One of my initial classes was biology 1. I am very very impressed by this department and this class. Dr Knochel is a masterful teacher.
The best class I've ever taken. Dr Knochel clearly knows how people learn best. His class is innovative, exciting and interactive.
Dr. Knochel knew what he was talking about and wanted his students to succeed. The only issue was with his quizzes; they were very different from the notes and the lectures. The quizzes went way more in depth than what we went over in class. I would really recommend reading the chapters before you come to class. Its not just memorizing vocab.
He is the best professor that I have ever taken. He has made me passionate about Biology. He is usually behind other sections, however, you will know the depths of the material by the end of the chapter. He is clear about what you need to know. He is very knowledgeable about knapweed and various insects, so that was neat. I recommend him to anyone!
Dr. Knochel is one of the most competant instructors I have come across. He is certainly tough, but as long as you are showing up and participating in class, reading the textbook, and taking notes, you will do well. I would recommend this professor to anybody interested in biology.
Worksheets and the person sitting next to you teach more than the prof
Competent and diligent professor, definitely knows his stuff! If you ever have questions about science topics outside of class, he'd be more than happy to answer questions for you! Definitely one of the best professors to take at CU Denver. Thank you Dr Knochel!!
Dr. Knochel's online Ecology course wasn't as easy as I expected. Proctored quizzes and exams, so no using your own notes. Homework was time-consuming but enjoyable (read, take notes, answer in-text questions). Stay on top of the readings! Dr. Knochel posted great lectures, links, and responded quickly to emails. One large project, 2 exams.
A lot of what he brings up in class isn't on the tests or quizzes. The quizzes and tests were much more difficult than what we learned in class, and some of the wording was ambiguous, which made it hard to get a decent grade. He's a very nice guy, but the course doesn't seem entry level, and it seems like he makes things harder than need-be.
I have really enjoyed learning molecular biology in this class so far. Clear expectations, innovative class.
I know a lot of people really like this prof. I personally couldn't stand his lecture style, but am taking him again online, which is alright. His lectures were just so unfocused, rambling, & unhelpful to me. He'd also just throw a worksheet at us most days - I don't need to be babysat while I do a worksheet, I need quality lectures. Overall, eh.
This class is worth every minute. Challenging, fun, engaging.
I felt that his class was structured well but the quizzes and tests were very hard and confusingly worded. He is not a very good teacher so you will have to rely mostly on the book. He is a very nice person, but like I said, not a great teacher. I definitely do not recommend taking him.
Out of all the professors biology professors I know I will have to say that Knochel is probably the best one so far. I don't like how the other professors thought me and it just felt overwhelming and unorganized.
Terrible! His writing is often unintelligible, making it difficult to understand exam questions. His lectures and course materials are disorganized, and assignments lack clear grading criteria. He shows no interest in helping students. He often posts homework last minute, so if you are not constantly checking canvas, you will miss something.
Online general biology 2 was an interesting and very flexible class. Weekly homework and quizzes kept me busy. He uses recorded online lectures, most of them pretty good. Structure of class was easy to follow.
Dr Knochel is a passionate and hilarious instructor who really tries to make the class interesting. If you don't read the book or go to class, you will not do well. He posts his lectures online, which is a huge help. His lectures do not coincide with the book, so it is difficult to follow along but his class is not impossibly hard.
Don't take this your first semester of college. When you take this class, you cannot have a life outside of it, there are way too many assignments within a week, too many exams that are heavily weighted, and too many quizzes (also heavily weighted). His lectures do nothing to help your learning. You have to read the book or you won't pass.
Knochel wants the best for his students, he will push you to put in the effort. You must be dedicated to this class or have an advanced knowledge of biology before hand. You have to do the reading to be successful and the quizzes are more important than the homework sets.
Dr. Knochel is a really sincere, funny guy... but his lectures don't seem to cover all material on tests and quizzes. He spends a lot of time focusing on one specific part of the chapter and neglects to teach a lot of other stuff (that ends up on the test) you really have to read and understand the textbook to do well in his class.
It's always interesting to see an instructor that is so passionate about what they teach. The important thing if you're taking this class is to read the textbook and never miss a single assignment... I know it sounds really bad but each assignment makes it so you can do super well on the quizzes. There are 2 exams, weekly quizzes & homework
Very cool teacher, I honestly did not put that much effort into this class and ended with an A. Some lectures can be quite boring, but if you fall asleep in class he does record his lectures and puts them online. His class is very organized on Canvas and will have all the material available to students. Quizzes are weekly but online, and aren't bad
There's a lot of reading and online assigned homework + quizzes. I know many teachers base their entire class off of tests, but Dr. Knochel makes grades fair and you have lots of opportunities to make up lost points. It's an easy class as long as you keep up with the textbook readings.
Dr. David Knochel was very nice and provided us with help hours every week to explain questions after every quiz or exam. He also arranged homework for preview and review, so that students could get the general idea from it. I got almost 96 out of 100 in his class, but I got a very low score with another professor in last semester.
He's a wonderful teacher tbh. Right now, I have a B in his class but you could easily get an A, if you do good in his quizzes. I started slacking but I still have a B though hehe. Y'all should take his class. His classes are fun as well.
This class was tough being that most of the learning I had to do was through book rather than lecture (almost entirely book) and we had very little to go over in class.
Was there to answer any questions I needed and really cares about the subject. Uses connect homework, which makes you go over content at least 3 times so it really sticks. Provides easy extra credit and points just for attending study sessions. Also provides LOTS of study materials for his exams, which is much appreciated.
Dr. Knochel is great! There are 1 test and 1 final, and he gives a lot of extra points on both tests. He drops lowest quiz and homework grade too. You have to read the book and work for your grade. But it is a easy class overall
Take Dr. K if you are prepared to devote your life to Biology. His teaching style is definitely advanced, more for people who care to truly expand their knowledge. Not a class to attend if you're just going to memorize and not make connections. Also- HE DOES NOT KEEP GRADES. Drops even the GOOD scores and your final grade WONT reflect actual work.
Knochel was a nice guy. Class is spent listening to lectures or doing in class worksheets. The first half of the class was pretty easy and content got gradually more difficult throughout the last half of the semester so you definitely need to study hard and read independently in order to do well especially later in the semester.
Slow and easy learning pace at first but as the semester went on the pace got out of hand and the reading became a lot. lectures were okay as they were boring and didn't cover all the chapter material in the hour long lectures.
College science courses are a challenge. This class is no exception. This professor makes an amazing effort to get you going and get you on board.
Clear, easy to understand class periods with group discusions and interaction (150 person class but seems smaller!) Fun topics and class.
He gave a lot of opportunities to gain points for your exams and quizzes. His lectures were clear and concise. He also has an incentive for you to go and get help from LAs. His HW load were all do-able and can be easily done in an hour or less.
Lectures were boring at times. He briefly went over the hard material and skipped the easy parts for students to read on their own. Included his own work. Cares a lot about student's grade. Drops a lot of grades. Takes awhile to put grades in and grade tests. Gives out a lot of handouts for better understanding and practice problems. Great person
Best class thus far at CU. Professor with many years of experience and raises the bar high. Be sure to read the textbook carefully and get ready to work and learn.
Need to study at least 7 hours per week. The class is amazing and the assistance and help is there if you take it advantage of it.
This online evolution class was great!
Biology 1 with Dr. K is still one of the hardest classes I have taken to date, he really makes you work for the grade and he assumes that most of his students are going to go into the medical field and makes you work as such. I would definitely consider this class a weed out class but if you work hard you can survive it.
The organization and structure of the class was geared to help you get the most out of your learning experience. If you did what was expected, the amount you were able to learn is amazing! There are lots of quizzes which I like because they force me to review and study throughout the semester. Honestly, the class is challenging but easy to conquer.
I would have failed this class if it wasn't for the LAs.
Evolution course was great.
This upper division course in biogeography was probably the best course Ive ever had. The course was fully online, engaging and one of last in my degree. Thanks
Evolution for majors class was challenging. I liked the attention and atmosphere of the class even though it was online. Have been wanting the flexibility and this course was a full learning environment. Props.
General Biology course was great and I would take another class with Dr. Knoschel.
I am loving this ecology class. Professor responds to questions thoroughly and cares if we are learning. Various types of assignments and even some opps for field trips. Glad Im taking this course online.
Dr. Knochel is the best, best professor I ever had. He is very professional and caring. His lecture is organized so that you can really learn things. He provides 4-hour office hours per week so that you can stop by and ask questions. He respects every single student. He encourages and supports students. I am so lucky to take his lectures.
I am in the biology class for majors second semester. So far so good! Dr. Knochell provides easy to understand recordings and assignments. I think I am learning a lot and probably as much as I would in the same class on campus.
I am in the ecology course at UCD. I am learning a lot in the class and Inam grateful for the opportunity to work online.
This bio class is one of better courses Ive had. Instructor puts all concept lectures online, so I can listen and watch anytime. During class we have time to work on practice worksheets and ask questions. Truly interesting class.
Knochel is hands down just an amazing teacher. He keeps the lectures interesting and provides unbelievable amounts of out of class resources to make sure you have access to a learning method that works for you. The exams and quizzes cover the subject very well and if you show up and try at all nobody should have any trouble passing this class.
Sometimes he can get off topic & is kind of weird but hes funny! He doesnt really lecture as he prefers to give you worksheets to do in class. He creates groups and makes you sit with them to engage in small discussions. He makes class really easy & gives A LOT of opportunity to fix your grade! Definitely an easy A!
A good introduction to biology. Even though its a large class it felt welcoming and respectful. I would recommend this course as a great learning experience at the University of Colorado.
Dr. K is a nice and funny man. He doesn't lecture much, he goes over the main topics and hands out worksheets for the topics to help. He also has short answer exams which you can get points back for doing corrections. He really cares about you learning the material.
Dr. K really does get it when it comes to University. Understood completely everyone has different learning styles. Though he can occasionally get into harder subjects outside of the Gen Bio realm, he made it so easy to pass the class. Dropped quite a few assignments, but I recomment trying your best at all of them. Gave plently of EC opportunities
If you pay attention in class, he literally explains everything coming on the exams and he tells what to focus on and expect. There is 3 or more extra credit opportunity. You won't fail unless if you want to. I highly recommend him.
Online course was flexible and interesting. I would love to take other classes from same instructor.
Great professor for this course! Homework assignments and quizzes are tailored to give you all the information needed for the exams. Lectures are easy to listen to and good at clarifying material from the book. I took it online and there were a few glitches in canvas on the quizzes, but he would change grades if it was brought to his attention
Very quick responder which is nice for an online professor and is always willing to give you a second chance. The only problem is he has extremely hard tests and quizzes and wants textbook based answers, but besides that super sweet and even willing to help you learn.
Dr. Knochel was very nice, easily approachable. I also really liked how his tests were similar to his quizzes, as studying the quizzes would help me better understand the tests. I liked how Dr. Knochel have us a chance to learn the questions we got wrong on the test by offering a discussion. Overall I really learned a lot in class, and loved it.
This evolution class was incredibly interactive. I learned a lot and appreciated the quick feedback and lecture recordings. Wonderfully planned and organized class and thx!
This instructor has been very helpful, switching the course to online despite the tragic global crisis of coronavirus. Thanks.
Dr. K uses a reverse classroom system so as long as you do the online lectures and do well on the practice sets, you will be fine. Gives exam correction points of up to 25% back on the first exam, and 10% on the second. He utilizes LAs and office hours for additional help, if you begin struggling with the class, there are lots of ways to get help.
He is super understanding with personal and school life problems. Hes always here to help out. Hes lectures are online which is nice. He does have quizzes online. Make sure to do them! They help out with your grade a lot! Homework is sometimes online or in person.
The lectures doesn't help at all. Once you go to the lecture you don't even understand what he is teaching. I honestly wanted to learn biology but with Dr. Knochel I didn't learn that much. So if you wanna actually learn biology I wouldn't recommend this professor. He's really nice but he doesn't know how to teach.
An exceptional class i took for my major. Professor Knochel is brilliant w the science and was flexible with learning.
This online class was good. Learned a lot with thorough lectures and assignments. I would probably prefer this honestly to having to drive in to class because of the flexibility and great organization online. Thanks
An online class in a pandemic that is thus far well above my expectations. The class has good recorded lectures amd creative assignments too.
The evolution concept is very interested in me. From the beginning, he is seemed nice that you can earn easy credit from his first assignment, then GOOD LUCK at the rest. His quizzes are EXTREMELY HORRIBLE. The questions make you feel you are an idiot because you do not know the universe, not evolution. Learning objectives for quizzes are USELESS!
Good online course in biology. Recorded lectures are thorough and helpful and drops 2-3 low quiz scores. Final project for course is creative.
Dr. Knochel's online Biology class was very straightforward. I read the chapters, did the assignments, and watched the lectures. While the class was online and asynchronous, Dr. Knochel was positive and accessible outside of class. I plan to take more of his classes in the future.
Online class, intro Evolution. Well designed from a learning perspective.
Before COVID amazing teacher, now you barely hear from him. Wait long times to get response. You are teaching yourself and have quizzes, assignments, a test, and concept diagram. The quizzes are always the reason why I can't get an A. He has drops but my anatomy quizzes are easier than his. They are multiple choice and check all that apply. upset.
This class is very textbook heavy. Each week there is a chapter to read and a 10-15 question quiz to go along with it. The quizzes are heavily based on the textbook, so reading the chapter a few times helped me understand the content. There are recorded lectures posted for some chapters but not all. There is a project and one exam (final).
I was happy with my general biology class last year with Dr. Knochle. He was super helpful, easy to ask questions, and informative. His explanations of the biology topics were detailed, concise and on point. I highly, highly recommend!
Biology is a fun subject no doubt! And I must admit, this class is realy well done. Easy to understand activities and assignmentsand be sure to turn it all in and especially read and take notes from the book. Really good class overall
Dr. Knochel is one of the best professors at UCD. I highly recommend any of his classes.
I hated watching his lectures since this was an online class. I felt the lectures he did post did nothing to help me learn the content that was needed so I stopped watching them. He was incredibly disorganized in the way the class was set up. Supposed to have three exams only had one. Just an overall awful class, do not recommend it.
Took Ecology fully online and the material was very easy but also academically straightforward. Most of the assignments are quizzes that are based on the textbook. Each quiz covers one chapter from the book. Occassional discussions and 2 exams. Great class to take, especially for the credit.
He's horrible. His quizzes are never about content that he actually goes over and the lectures that he does post are so boring you will fall asleep. There is nothing interesting about his classes and he sucks.
I'm unsure why this professor has such a high rating, but I'm assuming his in-person classes are better. I took Professor Knochel online for Introduction to Evolution, and the class was quite awful. Teacher takes long time to respond to any questions, and does nothing for the class. Just overall a lazy teacher online...
I took Dr. Knochel for gen bio and ecology, both online. Loved him for gen bio, super easy and clear grading criteria. Ecology was a different story. So many application assignments straight out of the textbook and a project at the end that was not on the syllabus and came out of nowhere. Tests/quizzes were hard -- more specific than lecture.
I took his online course and he hasn't updated his lecture videos in a few years. His weekly quizzes did not relate to the lecture at all and I would try to go back and find the right answer in lecture and the book and was unable to find anything. If you need feedback, you wont get it on any assignment.
Professor Knochel, is passionate about what he teaches but not very hands on when it came to teaching. The course relied almost solely on textbook reading. I took this course as an elective but did not expect it to be as time consuming or as dependent on rote memorization as it was. Content was covered quickly with little time to digest.
Very good professor be ready for the work
Worst online professor I have ever had. Most of the links in the class do not work, including the lecture slides (multiple people have told him this and he hasn't fixed it). Takes forever to get back to students and clearly does not understand how canvas works. Quiz answers stay private so you never know what you got wrong.
This course was very flexible and had a wide variety of opportunities to learn ecology online, with discussions, quizzes, a big project and homework. Dr. Knochle cares a lot about his students and I learned a lot. I'm not sure what some of these students' low ratings are for -- they probably just didn't do well and are mad. Great online course!
The class is textbook-heavy, with weekly quizzes that require close reading. Though lectures are hit-or-miss, Unstuck ai proved a helpful study aid alongside the textbook. Overall, an engaging course, though the quizzes can be challenging.
Final project, 6-8 minute audio over a concept diagram we made, and the rubric literally said it had to be "museum quality." Weekly quizzes only open Friday-Monday. No open book/notes. He said the NORMAL average for the class is a B. In lecture videos, he said he "wouldn't cover this because the textbook does." Final exam + project is 30% of grade.
Dr. Knochel is a good professor. He gives a lot of reading, homework and quizzes. He uses the McGraw website and sends a 1-2 hour lecture video on canvas. Not a lot of communication with him, if anything you contact the grader and if they can't help then him.
1-3 hour-long lectures posted weekly. Weekly readings, homework, and quizzes. The lecture videos are several years old, and the audio quality isn't great (they were recorded during a class, so references made in the videos don't apply to current students). No review posted for the midterm. Hours of reading and studying outside of class.
General Biology online, 2010 and 2020, were great. Just complete the work and study.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HIM. Lectures were outdated and low-quality, links were broken, and the professor barely communicated The TA did all the grading, and most work was automated No study tools were provided, and assignments were long, repetitive, and often irrelevant. 2 tests all written answers. 3 hour long homework assignments. WORST PROF
Worst online professor ever
Communication was awful. The professor seemed checked out. For the few responsibilities he did have, like uploading class materials or posting grades, he clearly didn't bother to double-check anything. The course ran on autopilot through McGraw-Hill and Canvas, with no real involvement from him at all.
I wouldn't recommend this professor if biology isn't intuitive to you. The lecture videos are outdated, and the audio quality isn't great. I emailed the professor, but he never responded. He does offer several extra credit assignments which is nice.
Dr. Knochel is an amazing professor, I've taken 3 biology classes with him and he's a fair grader. He provides good feedback on project assignments. There are a fair amount of discussions and they aren't too bad.
