Great Teacher. I was kinda not wanting to take the course, but this professor is great. He explains everything and always has little lessons to teach. The essays will be tough, but you learn to become a good writer. Never dull class. Something always new is said. Great class.

i had this teacher for english 165.11 (2nd semester fresh, year) Professor Gaines was awesome, not only did we have hands on involvement when reasearching our papers, he was an easy grader. He also brings history into the classroom, and makes you think outside the box.

i liked him so much that i purposefully took him for the second one. hes an awesome teacher and teaches very untraditionally (dont buy the book, you wont need it) and doesnt tech grammer and stuff like that. we took field trips during class and generally had a lot of fun. i would recommend this class if you dont like homework. he was AWESOME!!!!!!!

This man knows his stuff.. Take his class, you won't regret it.. You have teachers that may impact your life in ways you wouldn't imagine.. he's one of them..

He is pretty easy, but a picky grader on essays. He talks about his life during class instead of giving assignments to take up classtime. Only work you really have involves the essays he assigns every 3 weeks or so. very opinionated but intresting at time

Dude was AWESOME! He is tough at first, and I learned that through my first essay where he stated, "This not a college level paper." But I learned quick. He taught us the little things that would really bring our grades down if we did them repetitively. Overall a great teacher. He's really funny, really opinionated, and a very fun professor.

His 1st essay is really hard so work extra hard on the first one. He wants it to be technical/scientific. Do not use words like also very so in your papers. His other essays are easier and his class goes by quickly he is very nice and wants you to make a good grade.

Prof. Gaines tries to make himself seem really tough, but he is not. Class is very simple, just do the work. He is very helpful and you really don't get homework, except the essays. He is really funny. Never cancels class, grades pretty fair. I recommend Prof. Gaines...especially to females. He LOVES females. (alot easier on them)

He is really nice even though u got to really work good on the papers he's kinda picky with certain words that u should not use (like,as,..)class is all about writing papers gives couple of quizes from the text and do some activities in class he's random takes u on fieldtrips on campus where u sit and write papers to get inspired

Great Professor! Classes are interesting (field trips and rants) and very entertaining. There are 5 essays, all somewhat easy, but MUST be 5 pages or more and must have what he wants in them. Tends to like the girls in the class more, so wear a short skirt when you turn in your papers. (Kidding.) Very fun class, I recommend him to everybody!

xtra cool dude..you'll read about 4 books throughout the semester-tests are essay questions over the books..if you like to read take him.he adjusts grades if you talk to him and he is very animated.

Professoor Gaines is awesome! He is a very fun teacher to have. He's not too difficult. You'll have to write about 5 papers at about 3-5 pages long, double spaced. The last paper due at the end of the semester is 10 pages long. I didn't think it would be very interesting but I had fun! :D

Best teacher I've had at SHSU. Took him for 164 and 165 and is always willing to help not just in Eng. If you go to class there's no reason you shouldn't get a high grade in his class. Does show some favoritism, but it doesn't affect the grading he just picks on you and expects more out of you.

He's a great teacher with a great attitude. Likes to joke around a lot, but he also expects his students to do their work. Tests are all short essay format, but if you do the readings and come to class for discussion of the readings the tests are easy. He doesn't hand out A's but he is always willing to explain how you can improve. Great guy!

He's great! I loved the fact that he kept class interesting! He's very hard on grammar but he will help you with anything you need help with. If you miss a day where you had to turn in an essay for the most part he'll let you turn it in the next time you come in. Not a bad teacher at all he just wants his students to be sucessful!

He's by far the best professor I've had at Sam. You learn more than english, but it's intense writing. If you're not a strong writer, don't be discouraged because he'll improve your skills. If I could take him again I would. He's a lifelong professor that I enjoyed taking. He's also very sarcastic and lilght-hearted so that's a plus!

I had him for 1301 and 1302. He improved my writing greatly. I highly recommend him. He's funny and interesting. Grades consist of a few essay, midterm, and a final. If you work hard and try he will take notice.

Took him for 1301 & 1302, he's the best teacher! Show up to class, because he gives you extra points on your final grade, does a lot of one page essays for completion, and 3-5 pg essays, but you don't have to be a great writer, just follow the rules he gives and you'll make an A. Final and Midterm are usually over grammar rules he does in class.

Amazing professor, but you have to do your part as well. You could show up and do the work, and be fine, but if you get the chance to talk to him, do it. He has an open door policy, free drinks and candies in his office, and that's not even the best part. Talking gives a chance for you to tell him how you work, and he can then help you do well. :)

He's a bit of a tough grader but always tells you what needs fixing. Don't be afraid to ask for clarification or help; he's open to calls at all hours. Be prepared to share experiences, stories, papers, and give answers as he likes to call on people to speak. Wish I had gotten into his class for second semester.

-Gives you an opportunity to get 15 points on one of your essays if you get a stamp from the writing center BUT you can only do this ONCE all semester so choose which essay you want to add points to CAREFULLY -Very tough grader! Watch your commas, and subject-verb agreement and tenses - Don't be afraid to text him if you have questions! Very nice

Took him my first semester as an incoming freshmen without knowing what to expect in a college learning environment. He quickly began showing us how to write college material. I barely passed my first semester with him, and now I'm making an A on every essay, and assignment he gives us.

He is a great professor. If you have free time go into his office, his door is always open to students and there are always interesting conversations going on in there. He is also more likely to help you better if you go in there and talk to him. You have to try to fail his class, it is that easy. Just do the work and you will be fine.

Professor Gaines is funny. Talked a lot about life situations and liked to interpret them with English in some way. He's a tough grader with essays but he doesn't assign much work. We had some little group skits we had to do but that was pretty much it. He's fairly easy and I would definitely recommend him!

I took Gaines my first semester at sam, and the class was pretty fun! He grades pretty heavily on wether or not you use grammar and verb agreements properly. His jokes do get pretty sexist. So if you're an easily offended female, sorry. Overall his class was easy i made a B.

There is no point in looking at the syllabus because he doesn't follow it. The textbook is not used at all so don't get it. Many group skits and he will assign a 3-5 page papers on Monday that are due Friday. His class was the most stressful and he can also be very offensive and sexiest however he is extremely helpful and if you try you will pass

Gaines was amazing. He isn't the easiest professor and at times his lectures can seem long and even strange, but they are always interesting! His grading is very fair, on one paper he flat out told me he didn't agree with a single word i wrote, but he said it was well written and gave me an A. His office door is always open and he's there to help.

I loved Professor Gaines. He was not the easiest of them all, but not too difficult. 5 essays total. Topics were very interesting. Grades based off of grammar. You can tell he actually reads your paper and takes the time to fix your mistakes. returns papers by the following Monday. He is there to help anytime! highly recommend.

Really good professor, what I enjoyed about this class was that he taught us how to prepare for the real world. He overall is an easy grader and is extremely funny. He does make sexist comments but he is joking around with them.

Good Guy.. Attendance is a must. For an English class not too bad. One major research paper and a few small assignments. Show up and you pass.

Very great teacher. Does not go by syllabus, but always sends emails out with examples. Only thing ever graded were essays, and class skits. Long talks about random things but super funny. Lets class out early on occasions.

Show up, do your work, easy A. However, he does not post his grades on blackboard and if you miss class one day, you might have missed alot. He usually makes assignments due the day of or two days after announcing the assignment. End of semester essay counts towards a big chunk of your grade.

Professor Gaines really cares about helping students and his class definitely is challenging, but overall, hes a great teacher. You have 5 essays and grammar exercises. He usually gives you As just for showing up and performing a skit. He tells funny jokes and is always available after class. 7/10 would recommend.

Lots of people complain about Gaines. I absolutely loved his class. If you get your feelings hurt or embarass easy avoid him. He is always ready to help you and replies to emails fast. I took him during the COVID-19 stuff, and he did his best to help. He is a good professor, and the ones that don't like him didn't want to do work they signed up for
