Tough grader, but I learned a lot. He is willing to spend time with us outside of class, which really helped on the exams.
deeg is a great guy.. but i think he made this class harder than it should have been- he wasnt very clear in his assignments.. and he is definately one to ramble
Great guy, but he grades papers like this is a 4000 level class. I got my first C on a college paper ever in here. If I ever have to hear about one more fallacy I'll go crazy.
Very hard! But he spent a lot of time with me outside of class. He has more office hours than any of my other profs.
great teacher, very helpful, made class interesting. the class has a lot of writing for a freshman course, and the grading is too harsh, but i definitely would take a class from Deeg again.
Wonderful instructor! I learned a lot in this class, and I am taking his Ethics class next semester. He is a tough grader, but fair. I am a better writer now than when I began the semester.
Outstanding Teacher!
Great class. Great instructor.
This class is best to take in the summer. He doesn't require papers then and explains materials thoroughly. Great professor and even though you may not agree with his philosophy, he does not penalize if you express your ideologies. Classes may be long and boring during summer but it is a lot easier!!!
Plato is the weirdest class I have ever taken. Deeg really makes me think in ways I did not expect. I would really recommend this class, but don't think it will be like your other philosophy courses.
Awesome class. Awesome professor. Deeg seems to know everything about Greek philosophy and history but he still respects student's ideas.
Great class. Great professor.
Very interesting class. Unbiased, intense lectures.
Excellent instructor and great discussions. He is the only person I know who can make John Locke interesting.
Modern Political was awesome. Great lectures, and he spends a lot of time with students outside of class.
He is the epitome of what a professor should be. Conducts the class in a discussion-format. Grades based on participation, so do speak. More available outside of class than he should be (which is a good thing). Very - no, overtly knowledgeable about the subjects he teaches and some of that will rub off on you. I highly recommend!
Deeg was a great professor. He was always willing to help out and also enjoyed teaching the subject. He sometimes went off on rants and raves, but it was definitely an informative and amusing class. I do not care for Philosophy but his way of teaching made it more interesting. Make sure you fully answer essay questions and always show up to class!!
Very well read and outspoken. Obvious passion for the students and the subject.
This was the most difficult class I have ever taken, but also the most rewarding. I have never felt so challenged in all my life as trying to come to grips with some of these ideas, but Deeg spent hours at a time outside of class with me (and others) to help me understand the material. I would definitely take another class with him again.
Interesting class, Deeg is very helpful, make sure ask questions if you dont understand. Participation is part of your grade and reading responses are easy and make sure you put some thoughts and relate it to the materials. Sooo easy class and Deeg is awesome!!! Ill take his class again!!! Learned alot too...I didnt know what/who Marxism b4
Took Plato as an exit, lesser of the evils I thought.Got an A but my God soooo BORING !!!Lots of tedious writing. He was ok, nice guy. Question to USF... why do you make premeds do these exit requirements when you don't make non science majors take say, Chemistry to exit?? Not fair and a double standard.
Took Deeg for Plato and Modern Political. Great instructor and always kept the discussions interesting. If he taught a few more courses, I would minor in philosophy.
Excellent teacher, he made things interesting that I never imagined would be. It's important to keep up with the reader response papers, though, they can really catch up with you.
Great teacher, though a little wordy. He really encourages class participation, and he is available outside of class.
Extremely knowledgable. I'd say "scary smart". Class discussion was always interesting, which is saying something when you're talking about Kant.
Great teacher! Really knows how to connect to his students and make things understandable. Very intelligent and very enthusiastic. He wants to see his students participate, understand and succeed. A good choice for AOK. Take his class.
This class was a real eye-opener. Deeg was the one professor I had who treated me as a person and with respect, and he was the one person who really challenged me this semester. I thought I was very secure in my understanding of my world, but this class made me want to through out everything I once knew and start over.
I took his logic class last summer. If he would have tested us on problems from the book it would have been better but his test problems did not come from the book and were much more difficult. He cared that his students learned the logic more than how they learned it and he encouraged group work. I highly recommend working problems in groups.
He is not very nice, gave "attendance quizzes" on days when he knew no one would be in class, which is the only reason I got a B. He is boring and talks the entire class period. Makes you write a lot of essays on really boring philosophy without specifying a topic. I wouldnt reccommend him for AOK.
Aristotle was my favorite class so far at USF. I thought I would hate the class and at first I did, but I am glad I stayed in it. The reading was confusing and a bit boring. Aristotle is a lousy writer. But the class discussions made everything worthwhile. Deeg made the words come alive.
He talks the whole class and makes you fall asleep. But he helped me out when I needed it, which was great. I just didn't like AOK.
The class was not only fun, but very informative. Deeg (Garrison) understands the difficulty in comprehending the written works of an author that has been long dead for the past 2400+ years, and he structures the class in a way for his students to easily disseminate the important information. Class participation is a must though, so come prepared!
My favorite class all year. The readings were not very interesting, and I did not much like the abundance of assignments, but Deeg made class interesting and informative. He seems to know everything about everything. Class discussions were fun and almost exciting.
Great professor. I am an engineering major and thought for sure philosophy would be boring. Not at all. Intriguing discussions, only a few essays. NOT a good idea if you have strong conservative religious views, however, very liberal and open approach. Loved him.
He has so much passion for what he is talking about that it is hard not to love Plato as much as he does. He's enthusiastic and if you read the books (or at least sparknotes) and have something to say its piece of pie. Participation is key. A few class papers, but he gives you 2 weeks to do each.
I had his Aristotle class and he could only show more passion by wearing a tunic while he taught, which I am sure he would love doing. You get out of the class what you put into it. He commonly asks the class what they want to talk about rather than following a set schedule, so read before class and participate unless you enjoy long uncomfortable silence.
I found him not very helpful. He expects his first year students to perform graduate level questions. Papers were difficult and we recieved NO feedback on them til 2 months later (and 2 papers later). While researching for the papers, i found pretty much his exact lectures. His specialty is history of philosophy, not actual philosophy. it shows.
Best instructor ever! I actually looked forward to going to a philosophy class (engineering student). He was always willing to spend time after class and had a lot of office hours. Only gripe, he takes forever to return graded assignments.
Deeg is a good professor. I found the essays fairly easy, sparknotes helps get around ridiculous philosophers like Kant. I found that taking notes helps, since all you need to do is some regurgitation for essays.
Deeg is pretty great, his lectures really enhance the reading, its not just a repeat of the reading. Ask lots of questions and have good responses on your response papers which are the majority of your grade, that and participation. Funny and very theatrical.
"Deeg" as he prefers to be called is an awesome professor! He shows great interest in the topic of philosophy and gives great background beyond the realm of the textbook. The class was discussion based so we basically were assigned readings and then talked about them in class. He only asks you to do a 2 page reader response once per week. No test.
Great & Interesting Class
He is very enthusiastic about philosophy and drama. He expects his students to speak up in class, but he is very easy! For the summer class, he did not have any exams only response papers for the reading. He is very knowledgeable in Greek and history, so his input is interesting. He is very easy to talk to and very helpful! I recommend him!
Deeg is an incredible professor. He makes himself available to students more than any professor I've ever encountered, and is incredibly well versed in just about everything. His knowledge of ancient history greatly enhanced the class. Can't recommend Deeg enough. Learned an incredible amount in a small period of time. Take his class.
Deeg has so much knowledge, it is unbelievable how much the man knows. Class consisted of a reflection paper every week on your opinion, so it is very hard to do bad on those. You talk about anything and discussions are anything the class wants it to be. My favorite and most interesting class BY FAR.
Absolutely brilliant! Extensive knowledge of the subject as well as a passion for it. Is open to discussion, gives his absolute all to students. Encourages discussion in and out of class. Always available, course work is manageable and he is willing to help if it becomes too much. Deeg is one of the best professors I have ever had!
Very cool guy that makes you like him with his friendly, interesting demeanor, then makes your respect him with his knowledge and insight. Very great class, especially to start off my honors college journey in my first semester.
Deeg is a great professor. His class is mostly participation based, with 12 short (1 1/2 to 2 pages) essays and one presentation. Participate a lot, and you will do fine. He grades leniently and fairly. He makes the class really interesting; it is obvious that he enjoys what he is teaching.
Deeg is great! His class is open to your own interpretations of the readings. He's pretty laid back, but he expects you to participate in discussion. As long as you complete the essays and talk in class fairly often, you should easily get an A in this class.
Deeg is funny and a very dynamic professor. He talks to you like a colleague, and expects you do the same. I hate humanities but generally enjoyed the class discussions because he related them back to the real world. You have to write short papers, participate and do at least one presentation and you'll get an A.
The readings were long and many were quite difficult, but out of all of the readings the whole semester you choose 12 to write a 1.5-2 page response paper on. Showing up to class and participating are essential, and don't be scared to go to office hours if you need help or clarification. Some of the lectures seemed long, but overall a good class.
You could hardly call his classes lectures. However, whatever you might choose to call them, they were incredibly long. He would have a student present for 5 minutes and the rest of the class consisted of students commenting something somewhat related, him going on for 10 minutes and then saying "what else..." and then the cycle repeats.
First of all, he expects you to read about 10 books in one semester - PHILOSOPHY BOOKS. If you're new to philosophy, that is a ridiculous amount of material to digest in one semester. You have a paper due each week, a presentation, and one poem memorization. His course description is nothing like the class. Makes students talk the whole time...
Excellent professor. Very enthusiastic and knowledgeable. I am a business and accounting major. I have no interest in philosophy. He made the subject interesting and enjoyable. The readings were confusing, but I understood them after his classes. A lot of hard reading, but really good discussions.
I took his Acquisition of Knowledge course, and while I found his lectures/discussions to be very boring, it is relatively easy to end up with an A. You have to write 12 papers by the end of the semester but there are plenty of opportunities to make those up if you missed them. Just show up to class and participate every once in a while.
I took Greek Studies. Only grades are participation, two presentations, and 12 1 and 1/2 page essays on the reading for the class. Not too difficult, but I would recommend having a little background in Greek culture before taking it so you understand the discussions better.
Deeg is a pretty chill teacher. In all honesty I sat on my phone most of the class, made a couple comments every now and again, did my reading papers and presentations and got an A. As long as you get the work done I don't see how you can't pass with an A. He uses a couple different books throughout the course but they're all pretty cheap.
Deeg is the best! One of the best professors I've ever had. He was so passionate about ancient greece that it forces you to be too. The class had 2 presentations and one reading response paper each week. Lots of reading, but nothing too difficult. Make sure to speak up in class. The books aren't because all the readings are on the internet.
Deeg, as he prefers to be called, is a great professor! He may give many papers, oral presentations, and assorted projects, but he is helpful, hilarious, and very inspirational! You must be an active participant in his class! He does not do many, if any, quizzes or tests; the class is discussion and presentation/paper based. He is truly amazing!
You reed good Greek and philosophy
Participation and some papers of philosophy. Pretty east, but you best like reading. Not too bad though, mostly Greek stories.
This is one of the most boring classes I have ever taken. He's a nice guy, but is very into his philosophy, which if you aren't a philosophy buff, it's gonna be a rough ride through the discussions and lectures. Papers due at least once a week, plus two presentations, and a poetry reading. Glad it's over.
AOK. Actually so boring & frustrating that I thought about dropping Honors. He's fine, beware that participation makes up a lot of the grade. He says he doesn't want to lecture but ends up talking 85% of the time then going "what else?". You have to write 12 1.5-page papers by the end of the course, but there's EC that counts as a whole paper
Turn in a short essay per week; if you try you'll get full credit for the essay. No tests. Easy A! Every class is discussion-based. He likes to talk a lot. I spark-noted most of the reading. I would take him again.
Incredible professor. One of the most passionate and intelligent people I have ever met. If you have interests in Greek philosophy, literature, or culture, absolutely take him. I took him for IDH 2010 as well, and he left an incredible impression on the person I am. Take him, you won't regret it.
Deeg is a fantastic teacher! I took him for AoK and a Greek Philosophy class, which were both phenomenal! He is very knowledgeable, approachable, and is down right funny at times! Anyone who says otherwise obviously didn't participate in class or talk to him. Write the papers, do the presentations, and participate! You'll do just fine and enjoy! :)
Like all IDH classes, they say you need to speak up in class often for participation points, but I just said a few things here and there, do the papers and assignments and was fine. He is a nice guy but don't count on class ever ending early! He likes to drag out conversations for as long as possible.
Deeg is a really funny guy, he cares a lot about his students. Half page papers due every class and lots of smallish writing assignments throughout the class. Major project is to memorize a 15 line poem and recite it. Based on what I have heard from others taking AoK, he is by FAR the easiest professor for this class.
The class was fun to go to but the studios were usually annoying and inconvenient. Be careful not to procrastinate because the final portfolio sneaks up on you and he changed the date to 5 days earlier only 2 weeks before it was due, then didn't post it on canvas. He also requires you memorize part of Song of Myself which no one else has to do.
I'm dropping out of the honors college after taking this class. After participating too all extent except missing one assignment worth 5%, I received a B in what should have been at least an A: (1) he doesn't grade anything until finals week, (2) most of the coursework felt like busywork. This was a horrible first impression for the honors college.
I dreaded going to class every morning. The "discussions" basically consist of Deeg going on about things that don't matter or make sense. I gained absolutely nothing from taking this class, but if i was forced to take it again I'd probably choose him because he's the easiest. Good luck not falling asleep in class, though.
He is a super nice guy overall, and writing reflections for the class discussion are simple just annoying to do. Very easy to get an A. For Honors, the only issue is there is little guidance for your mini thesis. Other than that, very easy class. Participation is easy, and if you miss a few classes it won't affect your grade.
Greek Politics (Section10) Deeg is the most chill professor ever. You don't even have to do all the readings, just the oens you write a response for. He likes to lecture more than let you discuss (which is fine with me). He is sweet and knowledgeable and his class is an easy A.
I don't have anything against Deeg, as he wanted us to call him. However, his lectures did tend to carry away from the subject. Although it is a seminar style class, he was talking the most and his lectures tended to drag on. However, he was very lenient in working with you to fix your grade and help out in any way he can.
He is a really nice guy. Do the work and you'll get an A easily. However, the course is a little unorganized and messy, so be ready for some surprises. Overall I liked it though.
Deeg is one of the best. Prepare to write about 200 words before every class (not that difficult, dont worry). Make sure youre prepared for class by doing the assigned readings and youll be great.
Shakespeare class. PARTICIPATION. Geeze, I feel like I talked multiple times every class and still didnt get a perfect participation score. Also, he has no rubrics for any of his assignments he just sorta grades willy-nilly. Not my favorite Professor but the lectures were fairly interesting.
He's pretty chill in class and will talk to you outside of class material. It's easy to skim through plays and discuss it with him during class. He also is heavily interested in Shakespeare which makes listening to his lectures entertaining.
Kind of an annoying class. Long discussion posts every week, a few papers for exams. No rubric, takes forever to grade so you don't really know where you're at. Acts like it's discussion based but instead lectures a lot and is a backseat driver for any "discussions."
The class was not really my cup of tea but Garrison did not really help with that much. He was not particularly tough but his lectures were not the most engaging and the class mates was not very participative.
Entirely discussion based, only a couple grades throughout whole semester, I think he's an easy grader. Not too strict on attendance. Interesting classes. You'll hear him say "what else?" a lot Lol.
Deeg is great. He gives good feedback on how to improve your grade, and he's super friendly and approachable. He can be easily reached out of class, and his assignment rarely require extra help.
This class was really different than others since it is discussion based so participation is extremely important as it takes up the majority of your grade. Professor Garrison was very knowledgable about the subjects discussed in class which made the discussions interesting and he was always easy to reach out to when help was needed.
Although most of the topics covered can be very boring, to get an A you have to read the materials. Additionally, participation is worth 40% of the total grade, so try to participate at least once in every class. You can skip reading the material and participate by adding something interesting to the class, but that won't save you always.
Can't complain, he's a very fair grader. Treats all of his students with respect and fosters some genuinely interesting conversations. Only downside is sometimes he interrupts his students then goes on an unrelated tangent for a while. But that's a pretty minor downside compared to all the good things about Deeg.
Deeg is great. Although participation is fundamental so make sure to do the readings! The readings can also be long, so be ready. He is super smart. I enjoyed it when he went on his relatively long tangents. I'll take him again for sure. There is a total of 12 papers due, one per week. However, deeg will be flexible with these, just communicate.
this class is completely discussion based which made it torture for me. deeg is very nice tho and will only call on u if ur hand is raised which cant be said for all professors of this class. discussions were boring.
deeg was great. His class is completely discussion based along with a final research paper, just complete those and follow the rubrics and you should get an A. The discussion material was usually interesting and deeg was very responsive and involved in the discussion, making them very interesting and insightful.
AOK was a very easy course with deeg. Not sure how he is with other courses, but as long as you do the discussions and major assignments you'll be fine. He tends to go off topic and drag discussions out until the very last minute, but cool guy overall.
Amazing professor. Very smart and cultured. His class isn't much work and he's very flexible on deadlines. As long as you show up to class, you'll be fine. Deeg's main focus seem to cultivate curiosity. For his Shakespeare class: you read 2 acts per class (short and doable). 2 presentations, 2 dramatic readings, 1 final project (write your play)
He is fine in AOK but attendance matters a lot because your grade goes down each time you miss class. Otherwise discussions are based on the readings and sometimes they can go off topics so it does not really matter if you read or not. He goes on a lot of his own rants which takes up a lot of time but they are just really long and boring.
One of the best professors ever! He is genuinely one of the most interesting guys ever. He is a philosopher who rivals the greats and always has insane stories and limitless knowledge on everything. He told us how he used to track bears through Canada and train Marines. His grading is easy; just show commitment and thoughtfulness.
