I agree with the comments already made. This professor is nice, but he cannot teach economics to save his life. None of the information on the tests is covered in class, and I didn't learn a thing.

Seems like a nice guy, I just don't get anything out of his classes. I also feel confused as to what to study for his tests.
Hard class and he is not very clear on a lot of his assignments. Tests are also tough.
you get nothing out of his class and he never makes it clear what are on the tests.

Nice guy, but a poor teacher. I had to drop his class, and I am an A-B student. Not difficult, just doesn't seem to know how to make tests.
If you want to pass an econ class do not get this guy! He can't teach, his tests are insane, and you leave every class learning nothing and feeling like you just wasted an hour and a half of your life.
He's a pretty good professor. he teaches things different though.

Take ANYONE else..

Gay is a very nice man but he exams are crazy and don't seem to cover class material. I'm a a-b student and received a "D" in his class even after several office visits and studying my butt off. It's like you get it with him or you don't.
Seriously bad teacher, I should've dropped the class but didn't. I'm stupid, do not enroll in his class, he's hard and quite NOT COOL.
I could not stand this class! He tells you to come to his office if you have trouble, but he's no help at all. Everyday he would waste tons of time talking about nothing related to class, and his tests are crazy hard! Do not take this class!
He's not very good at actually teaching the material. I am learning what I need to pass the tests with the textbook only. I would never go to his class if it weren't for the attendance policy.
Do NOT take this guy if you even want a chance at passing this class. He is the worst teacher I've ever had. He spends more time asking if the volume of his voice is ok and if we can see the markers b/c of the glare on the board. I had to drop with W.
Does not teach the material that ends up on the test. Talks more about the volume and markers than about the actually class. Take someone else!

Very unhelpful, makes you do pointless activities, take anyone else
HE SUCKS! class sucks, he's totally unhelpful..sucks sucks sucks
Do not even think about taking him if you haven't had Macro. He's pointless, and the lecutres are absolutely unrelated to what's on the test. But, the tests aren't unreasonable if you don't mind teaching the material to yourself and you've had an econ class before.
This class was horrible and he was even worse!! This class is ridiculously a waste of time and he was very unhelpful, and crazy!!!

Gay is the worst teacher I have ever had before in my life! He doesn't know how to teach! He does't explain anything. He spends most of the class expaining things that aren't even relevant. His tests are very very hard. I would recommend not taking him if at all possible. Seriously!!!
All you will hear is, "Can you back there see this color marker on the board, I mean is it ok, are you sure?" If you're that worried if we can see the green marker, just use the freakin black one, seriously. Not a good teacher, attendance policy is crap. He does it just so people will come.
Mr.Gay is by far the worst teacher i have taken at the U of A. He is not clear, cares too much about the color of the marker, and WILL NOT HELP YOU. so if at all possible.....STAY FAR AWAY!!!
Quite possibly the worst teacher I have ever had. His tests are so far off base from the lecture, you can hardly be sure if he gave the exam to the wrong class. If he would spend more time on examples, and less worying about marker color, things might be different. Especially steer clear if it is offered through the computer.
take him during the summer and get the tests from his last semester. he'll put factoids on his tests and each test contains questions from the last. i could see where he would be difficult in a lecture of 150. in the summer, he's not bad at all and very helpful.
ooooooooooh David Gay, the worst teacher ever, guys don't ever take a class with him, BORING, and he is trying to be funny where he is not :( :( .. If you have to take ECON, take it with ROBERT STAPP he is the best ever

This sucks because I am just another student who feels this guy is a disgrace to the University. Gay is with out a doubt the worst "professor" I have encountered. I would love to see him fired.
Worst teacher I have had at college. Makes a class that should be easy hard. I didnt believe it and did not drop him and its a huge mistake. I m sure he is good at econ but he is still an itiot and noone should have to listen to him ramble about the color of his markers or if his voice is loud enough.

He is a horrible teacher, he teaches nothing, he takes attendance (easy to get around, but still annoying). He can't explain anything, there is no use ever going to class except to sign in. don't take him if you have another choice
I had no idea that people would be rating him so lowly. He's not my favorite teacher, but I found him to be above average. I did have him for a summer class, however. Maybe his teaching style is different then. Although even though we had class in a 20 ft x 10 ft room, he did always spend waaay too much time asking if everyone could see the board
He is a nice guy...BUT the worst teacher ever! He doesn't explain anything that is going to be on the test. One day he got on ebay to show us a car he had! The only grades you get are test, and His test are hard and he just is a horrible micro teacher! Seriously don't take him!
You learn nothing in his class.
Overall he is a horrible professor. The lecture does not cover anything that the test does. He uses a lot of graphs and word problems on the test. He does give bonus sometimes so take advantage of that.
STOP NOW! If you are even looking at this you're in trouble. I'm a studious person, but it doesn't help in his class. He sucks that's all there is to it
Gay is not clear on anything he says. I have put my effort forth and have gotten nothing in return. He is a horrible teacher and the business school should find a new teacher to teach econ.
Run away now! If you have even thought about taking this teacher RUN!! I don't know what the business school is thinking, they need to get rid of him and find a replacement...NOW before any more students suffer! DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER!! He will be the death you!
Professor Gay is a really nice guy outside the classroom, but is very unclear and scattered in class. There were lots of incoherent notes and graphs that didn't make much sense... even after hours of studying I was still lost. I tried very hard to get through it, but ended up dropping because of his ridiculous tests.
Good buy, but not a very good teacher. Go with Mendez if you can. He always wears black jeans as if it were the 80's. Overall hes a cool guy that know econ, but doesnt know how to teach. But he did leave the answers to the test on the test so that helped get me through with a decent grade.
Managed to make FBC a difficult class, what does scavenger hunts, etchings of peoples names in the sidewalk, and being required to see the arts school's plays have anything to do with Bussiness? Also check blackboard alot cus he will change due dates on it with out telling you and expect you just to know that he did cus its on blackboard.
Horrible

This dude should not even be allowed to teach on campus, i go to class and come out less intelligent. Dude cannot teach, very difficult to listen to. Stop now if you are even thinking of enrolling in his class.
Not recommended at all.
HORRIBLE TEACHER! Very hard tests and very hard to listen to. Also, he's really just not very nice. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS! Take David Johnson instead.

DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER!!!!!!! MOST OF MY CLASS HAD TO DROP IT....NOT A GOOD CHOICE AT ALL!!!!
HORRIBLE!!! Please do not take him if at all possible. I'm having to re-take the class during the summer. I studied for 10hrs on one test and received a 33%. He says he will help you but it's a lie. DO NOT TAKE!!!!
He is very very confusing! Do not take him. I studied for the tests and made less than a 50% in his class. I have to take it over now. He doesnt have a good teaching method. He is very unorganized. The tests are extremly confusing. 4 tests and a couple other assignment make up your grade.
Not good at all. The book teaches one way (and is understandable). He teaches another way (very confusing), and the tests are a 3rd way (extremely difficult). Avoid him like the plague.
Don't take this guy. I've heard nothing but bad things about him. WARNING: His test are very difficult.. You can't possibly do well on his test because he is so unorganized and distracted.
Terrible teacher
he is the worst teacher I have ever had. his tests are impossible to do well on and he rambles on about nothing all the time. you will learn nothing from this class.
He is the worst teacher known to man. Do not take him. He is absolutely TERRIBLE. Hard tests. Doesn't explain well. Do NOT take GAY!!!!!
Terrible teacher, my worst yet in college for sure. Very unorganized and scattered, hard to respect him at all because he has few redeeming qualities. Material is very hard yet you learn nothing from Gay your only chance in this class as I have done is to pick up the book and learn yourself. This guy is a disgrace to all the good teachers at U of A
Had him for ECON 3333/4033 advanced level economics classes. Yes, he is difficult but once you give him a chance you will find he is absolutely brilliant and has much to offer. Brush up your essay skills as most of his tests are in blue books. Also be attentive to detail and write down the stories he tells.
Dr. Gay teaches pretty well and the class isn't that hard but he's one of the most impersonal professors I've encountered. If you go to office hours you get the same schtick that he gives in class every day. Asking questions will often end up with him giving you a run around instead of the straight answer. Decent lecturer, not much beyond that.
WORST TEACHER I HAVE EVER TAKEN! he rambles on about things not even related to class, he knows a lot cannot translate his information to students! he is just not a very good teacher. Over half of the class dropped after the first 2 tests because they we're failing.
He is the worst teacher Ive ever had. He doesnt help you and you dont understand him either. Always go to class b/c he gives points for that and make sure to check your grades on the books website not on blackboard. Also look under textbook resources on the website and study the e study guides. He uses those guestions on the tests!! Good Luck
Gay is the corniest proffesor ever, he is annoying. He doesn't teach, he just tells corny storys the whole time. I was an Honors student till i took his class, he didn't even record 2 of my test scores for my final average. Then it took him months to fix my grade, his class was a pre-req for my others so i had to change my schedule. DON'T TAKE HIM
Dr. Gay is very difficult. The class appears structured throughout the first couple of classes. However, he overuses the textbook Web site so much that it is difficult to understand what is due and when. The tests are ridiculously difficult as well and impossible to bring up your grade. If you like scattered teaching, take him.
Professor D. Gay is an interesting fellow, yet he lacks the professional skills to utilize that quality in creating an interesting and engaging learning environment. I am a 4.0 student and highly interested in economics; however, his inability to make any sense through his anecdotal style educational rambling has changed my overall opinion of WCOB.
He's a smart and friendly man with a rather odd sense of humor...but he's a horrible professor. He goes off on tangents, and doesn't teach a lot of the material he tests over (most of which isn't in the text book, either).
There are many people who hate Dr. Gay's class for various reasons. However, every question on his tests are directly from the study guides. If you go over these questions beforehand, it is not hard to get an A in his class.
Worst professor I have ever had. Seems to know the topic well but has no idea how to teach it to his students. Tests are impossible. Do whatever you can to avoid taking his class.
Its difficult to figure out what will be on the test and wont. He rambles a lot about current events but if you can search through the rambling you can learn a few things about econ. Not a walkthrough class by any means and you have to be really anal about your work or you will end up with a few missing assignments
He talks a lot and tries to be funny but it's not funny at all. He doesn't explain the concepts clearly, so you would need to read the textbook after to understand what he said.
Dr. Gay is very energetic. He really knows what he is talking about. But his lectures are often boring and unclear. The tests are not very easy but not very hard. To do well you have to study the book and do the study guide.
He knows the information, however he doesnt review everything that will be on the test prior to the test, so they are difficult.
Nice man, but a horrible teacher.. He would ramble on and on in class which made the class boring and hard to study for. I never knew what was actually going to be on the test. Don't take him!
Had him for history of economic thought. Nice enough man, but the class was somewhat without goals and I never knew what was going to be on the test.
Ridiculous curriculum, 3 tests n.i. final, a couple quizzes. Pretty terrible at getting ideas across. tests resemblance to lectures are terrible as well. Really dont have much good things to say. Also reluctant to help.
I ended up dropping this class before the drop deadline because it was impossible to learn in there. So, as honest as I can be to save you time, money, & avoid failing at all costs, please AVOID Prof Gay. Do not make the same mistake I did and take him based on the convenience of the time that the class was offered.
horrible! cant learn
I think he is crazy. He taught very little and mostly told random unrelated stories. I would try to get someone else.
History of Economic Thought. Very tough teacher. He's not unpleasant in class but he is hard to pay attention to. Speaks too quietly sometimes and goes off on tangents occasionally. He's a good guy outside of class though.
This guy is a joke. He gave my class a quiz that counted before we ever did homework or he taught us anything. DO NOT TAKE GUY!
This guys is a joke, I hated his class. He gave us a quiz before he gave us homework or taught us anything. DO NOT TAKE.
I was honestly amazed at the ratings people are giving this guy. He is one of the best and easiest teachers I have ever had. Extremely nice and intelligent. I've taken Econ classes before, and he does a great job.
If you actually do the work, you can understand the class. He has high expectations and that's why most students don't like him. Most people just don't want to work that hard.
If you want to actually learn economics then there is no one better! Dr. Gay is extremely intelligent and yes he has high expectations. Your answers have to be detailed! For those complaining about the day 1 quiz - it doesnt affect your grade and if you had stayed in the class long enough you would have learned that he just gives the quiz to s
Intro to MicroEconomics - He is a tough Professor, expects a lot of outside work from his students; but, he is willing to answer questions all day long if students will ask the questions. Show up to class, do the work, and you will pass; this is not a teacher you can play lack with.
He is honestly the worst professor I have ever had. I don't know what they pay him for. He about nothing that will appear on a test and his tests have misleading questions.
This is truly the WORST teacher I have ever had. I am an economics major with a 4.0 and had to drop the class within the first month. If you want to learn MicroEconomics please do not take this professor. OR ELSE!!!
Absolutely horrible teacher.
He's a hard teacher and expects ALOT. If you take him come prepared or get the hell out. SI instructors seem to be more helpful than he is.
Dr. Gay isn't as bad as previous comments suggest, but he is definately not a pushover. His tests do not seem to cover the material he lectures about, he has irrelevant coorelations between the work and marriage, and the homework is almost impossible. SI is the bright spot for the course but overall he seems to be a nice man.
Seriously the hardest teacher I have ever had. I attended class regularly and got nothing out of it, and no support from the professor.
Anyone who complains about David gay is simply a spoiled brat with a disposition to whine over anything. Everyone unarguably agrees that he had to dumb himself down to explain concepts to us. Ver abstract guy but by far the most caring Econ prof I had. Loved him. Won't make life painless for u. He's an educator. Brilliant. Incredible
There should be a color lower than blue face just for him.
don't do it..there's no turning back..
Not a good professor at all. While yes, he is very smart, does not explain anything well. Literally taught the class to myself.
He is awful. Get anyone else but him.
Dr. Gay is horrible. Even the SI leaders as well as other faculty note on his teaching skills (or lack thereof). His demeanor is absolutely annoying, his examples are stupid, and he is absolutely no help to his students.
This teacher is the worst professor at this school. If you have other options, use your brain and take them. He explains nothing, spends an hour and a half explaining simple concepts, and leaves off 25% of material that will appear on the test. Congrats, "Dr." Gay! You're awful.
Absolutely the WORST professor at the University. I have never hated a class before - Dr. Gay changed that for me. I would rather have a root canal than sit through his unorganized lectures. He takes months to grade exams and assignments. Don't take his class - for any reason. Change majors if you have to. Trust me.
He seems like a kind person on the surface, but do not expect him to help you. He will push you off onto tutors and SI leaders, who are great, but they aren't the ones making the tests. His lectures are difficult to understand, his quizzes and tests are written to trick you, and he doesn't want to help students in any capacity. DONT TAKE HIM
Worst teacher ever.
Not structured lessons, tests are highly inaccurate at testing what is taught. Drop this class is you get this professor.
David Gay is by far the worst professor I have experienced. Went into his class expecting an easy A. Now I study more for this class than my upper level science courses to hopefully pass. Definately avoid.
HORRIBLE DO NOT TAKE HIM!!
Worse teacher I have ever had. Questions on test have more than 1 right answer. Took two test to my old high school econ teacher. She said, "he worded things confusing and these were bad questions."
Lectures are entirely pointless. He expects you to devote a lot of time to his class, be it self-study or "field trips." Class attendance counts for nothing. He will NEVER let class out early. Test questions/answers consistently had misspellings in them; Questions are designed to trick you. Do not take him!
Dr. Gay is a very intelligent person, but his lectures are hard to understand. It was hard to even no what was important and what was. His test are written to trick you. If you want to sit in class and here is this too bright then take. Otherwise stay away
He was hard & difficult to understand.
I dont think I learn anything from his lectures. His test is unpredictable and hard.
Has absolutely no structure to his lectures. Tests are hard because he doesn't teach anything.
Worst. Switch out now if you can! I taught myself the content of this class because when I went to class he just confused me more. Tests are extremely hard. He gets off topic a lot during class. I hated this class.
terrible teacher. grades for this class weren't posted until 2 weeks before semester ended leaving many kids stranded with being a semester behind on such an important prerequisite business class. If you're stuck with him for FBC switch if you can or your gonna fail.
The expectations set at the beginning of the class and the reality are two different standards. Not only did he make it impossible to get in contact with, the criteria for grading essays seemed as if I was Junior level English major. All in all I would agree that he is a terrible professor. Haven't talked to him much out of class and hace no desire
He is the absolute worst teacher I've ever had. Drop his class if you can. Over half of his class is failing and unable to move on to required business courses next semester. If he doesn't like your work he will give you a zero, no questions asked, no partial credit, no extra credit. Very rude and difficult to talk to. Will not reply to e-mails.
absolutely horrible.
The absolute worst professor at the University of Arkansas. His lectures are completely irrelevant to his tests. Although I went to class and payed attention everyday, I literally can't tell you one thing I learned. Avoid this teacher at all cost, or drop him immediately.
If you sign up for this class be prepared to make a C. Run away as fast as you can.
Nicest guy in the world and really tries to help his students. The previous comments aren't very accurate. He always gives study guides, study sessions, SIs, and the tests are always exact questions from previous tests with a little bit of new material. He expects hard work, but he will curve grades. gives stuff away too, for good work a lot.
Horrible. Difficult to follow. What he discusses in classes in rarely on the test. I haven't learned a thing and I went to every single class and listened. HORRIBLE
Do NOT purchase textbook for ECON2143. He knows the material, but only though an educational level-no "real world" experience. He usually talks in circles during the class and rambles on about nothing. Learned most of the material needed on my own outside of class. Tests are multiple choice but consist of tricky questions.
What he talks about in lecture rarely has anything to do with economics. He's an awful teacher. But, If you go to SI and do the practice exams you should be alright.
I got an A in this class very easily. Some people have trouble understanding economics. Not Dr. Gay's fault. I thought it was very interesting. Attendance doesn't count against you and SI is mandatory. Really interesting class.
He talks about random things that have nothing to do with the test he is just not a good teacher you have been warned if you dont already know econ then good luck in this class
AWESOME teacher--brilliant, knowledgeable, challenging, helpful, engaging, funny. But tests were crazy, unpredictable, and questions were often not related to the course material. You'll learn more from him than from almost any other teacher, but test grades may not show it. Overall assessment: HIGHLY recommended, but proceed at your own risk.
David Gay: listen very, very carefully and do exactly what he says. Take notes like crazy (even if others are not), re-write them, study them, re-write them again. IMPORTANT: don't give up. This is a tough professor--do not underestimate him or his class.
If you can take another professor
I attended class every day, attended SI every week, and met with Dr. Gay at office hours a number of times and still barely got a C. I studied like crazy for exams, but there is no way to prepare for them. I did not hear of anyone doing well in this class. Don't take it from him if you want an A.
My SI instructor helped me get a C in this class. Dr. Gay is a good guy, but he the material on the test is nothing that we went over in class. Sometimes it doesn't pertain to what we have learned
He is always going off the subject. If one does take him you will have to depend on your S.I. leader.
he is a very hard teacher the tests have nothing to do with his lectures, you really don't learn much from him. must read the book and do it multiple times if you want to get atleast a B on the tests
One of the worst 'teachers' at YOUofA. Seems like tests are intentionally designed to mislead you & he's little help. Material is a joke & his delivery is the punchline. Continually off topic and wastes SO much of your time. If you like kazoo solos, cartoons from his youth, or Happy Birthday in Italian (to himself) - have at it, otherwise run now!
Going to class is honestly pointless because whatever is put on the exams does not match at all what he covers in class because he's so scatter brained. He has good intentions as a teacher, but just doesn't present info clearly or easily. Exams are hard, and it's hard studying for them too.
Makes absolutely no sense in class. Nothing he talks about in his lectures is on the tests. SI is required and even that doesn't help too much depending on who you have. There's no work for this class but it is an impossible class to take, especially if you're looking to learn something.
He is a super smart man when it comes to Econ, he just cannot say it in a way a student will understand. SI's? Don't help. He typically rambles on about nothing for the entire class. This is the class to take if you want to fail. Tests are awful never once made anything above a D. If he was your only choice like he was mine... wait a semester.
Awesome class! I had no interest in economics before this class but his quirky sense of humor made it enjoyable. While his tangents may seem random, don't tune him out. He usually ties them in with his lesson and they will help you on the tests. The tests are mostly comprehension. Amazing professor and great guy! I'd highly recommend his class!
He just rambles and is way too hard to understand. His tests are impossible and attending class prepares you in no way. He will rank about his life for the entire class instead of reviewing.
Great guy! Cares about the students
He has a tendency to ramble a bit, but this class was fantastic and extremely interesting! If you're not in to numbers, but need an econ course, this is your class. Easy book and most of the first test came directly out of it. You have to know your stuff for the tests, but as long as you give a comprehensive answer, you're golden. Great class.
HORRIBLE. you HAVE to get the previous tests and study guides from people who have taken the class to atleast get a B. He's one of those who has 3/5 answer choices that could be correct and you have to choose the "best one". nothing he says makes any sense. he rambles about apples/orange/kazoos. SO hard to understand what he's talking about. AVOID!
Just not a good class
horrible horrible teacher. worst experience of the business college.
Lectures are incoherent, tests are tremendously difficult. Don't rely on the textbook to make sense of the class it won't help. Take any other professor. Avoid taking at all costs because I barely got out of there alive.
Tough grader. Attendance and reading the text is essential. You must be able to grasp ideas and make inferences on tests.
Okay, any positive reviews of him on here are probably him writing them. I haven't found one person who thought he was a good teacher. He is known throughout campus for being the worst to take a class from... I'm sorry if he reads this but my grade is important and if i can spare someone else the pain and stress, I will. Take ANY OTHER PROFESSOR.
Absolutely the worst class I have ever taken. Have always been an A's and B's guy, but I'm struggling to even PASS this class. Nothing has really helped, taking his tests are like trying to hit a baseball blindfolded. Better read your textbook and take the FAQ's because lectures are pointless.
You must attend class and pay close attention to do well. That said, Gay doesn't do a great job of explaining all of the material and there is S.I. that can be really helpful. If available, take Tyler Lowery for it. He's a bit crass but will help you greatly understand the material and what is required. Quite a few extra credit points available too
Extremely unclear in class. Rambles on about nothing. Went into this class with a positive attitude despite awful reviews, but this class is truly awful. Attending class and reading the textbook will hardly help you at all. Bad, bad, bad, avoid at all costs if you want to keep your good GPA.
He says attendance isn't mandatory then grades you on it, and gives pop quizzes. Every class is like story time to him you never learn. He waits until a week before a test to talk about things that are relative. Thank God for SI leaders. You don't necessarily need a textbook but it would be good to have one or know someone who does just in case.
I took this class with a positive attitude despite the bad reviews. But, if my review can save someone from taking this awful class then that will be the only thing positive that came out of taking the class myself. Avoid this class at all costs. The SI is your only hope, and is still not enough to help you learn the material.
Literally the worst teacher I have ever had. This is an intro class to economics and he teaches it like a 4000 level class. He is very vague in his lectures and doesn't just straight up tell you what he is talking about so you have to figure it out. And he only goes over a handful of concepts then you have to learn the rest on your own. Stay away
Lectures over material that's not even about the class. Spends a majority of every class off on tangents or talking about how to use blackboard. I feel like he's there to fail you, not teach you at all.
Dr. Gay is a different kind of teacher, but if you go in with a positive attitude and try to learn, then you will. do the assigned reading, take lecture notes, and go to S.I. to learn a lot and do well in the class. You should definitely talk to him outside of class; he is a really interesting guy that you will really want to get to know.
This class made me spiral into depression. He seems like a nice person, but he's terrible. Tests are deceiving. Don't do it.
He's a horrible teacher. I learned nothing. Can't take notes on laptop.
He is a nice person and a terrible teacher. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
The worst professor in the world. I was only able to pass due to Tyler(SI leader).
I dont recommend taking his Basic Econ class. It was a waste of time sitting in his long lecture classes and textbook cost almost $200. Had four exams and including the final. Plus quizzes and test online due weekly.
Above all else in this class, BUY THE BOOK. It is absolutely necessary, as other than your SI leaders, you will be your only effective teacher. Even though MyEconLab is the class, you still have to show up to be counted in attendance. If you have problems teaching yourself, showing up, or reading books, don't take the class for your own good.
I had Dr. Gay for basic econ and expect to get a tutor and make sure you take it with a friend. you will struggle and he never will help you or give extra credit so if you have to take the class take it with Aaron Novanty. too many tears and office hours are worse than classget a tutor. The way he words his test questions make it difficult.
Dr. Gay thinks he is helpful and clear but HE IS NOT. Every time I talked to him (class and office hours) I left more confused than I was before. He has good intentions but his teaching style is hard to adjust to. If you have to take it save up $200 for tutoring throughout the semester, its your only hope.
Terrible. He is the most unclear, most unhelpful professor, EVER. His lectures are confusing and he teaches everything like it is a "review". Quizzes at the most inconvenient time frames. The SI sessions (which he doesn't teach) are helpful, but I could only learn so much in those. You must read to stand a chance.
Nice guy but a really, really bad teacher. You won't learn a lot from lectures but if you read the book you'll do fine.
I can't believe this guy is real.
Dr. Gay is not a professor I would take again. He would often tell his two sections different answers to the same question. He goes off on tangents during lectures and sometimes never comes back. If you have to take his class, your textbook is going to be your new BFF by the end of the semester, because he does not explain economic concepts well.
Lectures are all over the place and barely cover anything from the book. Super tricky wording on tests. Even though it's just an intro class, you will have to study more than you would for 3000 level classes just to get a decent grade. Save yourself and take any other professor!
If your in his class just turn and run! He feels the need to give 45 minute introductions that have no point at all and then he just skims over what he wants you to know. If your thinking about not buying the book you will fail.
This guy is hands down, the worst teacher I have had in my life. I will drop out of college before I have him as a teacher again. He does not teach during class. he assigns podcast and reading and expects you to just know the information. SI and the book is the only chance you have. Just don't take this class if he is your only option of a teacher.
I am a junior and he was seriously one of the worst profs I have ever had If he is the only prof left for that semester then take it a different semester
His lectures only provide you with real life examples of what is going on in the book. Only about half of the stuff he lectures about is on the test. The test are all multiple choice, but all the choices are very similar
Tests are very hard, haven't passed a single one. Reading of textbook is required, along with going to every class, studying martial before and after class, basically just constant studying of material(there's lots of it). his lectures don't teach anything and it's super boring
if you're in this class GET OUT WHILE YOU CAN. This is no joke. Dr. Gay seems like an awesome guy but his tests are extremely hard and he doesn't curve anything. There is also homework and quizzes every week. I've never made below an A in my life and I've struggled to keep a C this semester. The required SI drill is the only thing that helps.
Will literally make the class harder and wont curve exams in the beginning to weed out the people who wont get a good grade and lower the class average. Constantly goes on rants about politics and insults SO many people. Exams are super abstract despite the fact that the material is okay in the difficulty level, but exams are 110/100 points.
Goes off topic in class often and expects you to be able to relate it back to what you're learning. You will feel like you understand the material from the book and then he will lecture and you will feel lost. Studied very hard for exams and yet felt as though I was unprepared every time due to his elaborate and deeply comprehensive questions.
Outside of class Dr. Gay is very understanding and I respect him. He let me retake some assignments that I was unable to complete once. However, in class he will lecture about one topic and then expect you to know ten topics for the exam; with very conceptual questions. Does not seem to be bothered by the fact 3/4 of my class dropped by November.
This teacher required a lot of outside work in order to pass the class with a C. The test did not mimic the homework, SI questions, quizzes or pre-tests . The real test were a whole other ball game. He doesn't teach you. You get a review over what he thinks you should already know from doing the moderate level outside work.
Worst teacher in WCOB. -Rambles the majority of class on topics not related to coursework -Did not clearly answer questions from the class, he would avoid the question or blatantly talk down to the person asking the question--This led students to avoid asking Q's -Refused to post the grade distribution, so nobody knew where they stood Avoid!!
Dr. Gay seems like a genuinely nice person but he is a horrible teacher. His tests are irrelevant to what he discusses in class. The practice tests do help a little bit but not near what they should. Go to SI EVERY WEEK because this is the only way you'll even be able to remotely understand what is going on in lecture.
Simply atrocious. This professor will make you wish you never took economics ever. This has to be the most disorganized and careless professor I've ever had. The tests are stupid difficult for the level this class is at, the material is all over the place, the professor "teaches" for about 15 of the 75 minutes, leaving the remaining 60 to nothing
Super hard class. Took this class for a requirement and did not miss a class and still did not pass. I paid a tutor 5 times who walked me through every test and still that tests were hard and unpredictable. I would definitely not recommend this teacher, he was an assist for a teacher at Oxford and teaches at that level.
Better know the principles of macro and pay close attention to the "stories" he tells because a) if you don't know the basics you will fail and b) he will always put a topic (not in books) discussed in class on the test. Be prepared, if he asks you to look something up for the next class, do it. If no one participates, expect a pop quiz.
Very funny and charismatic, great guy. Horrible professor.
RUN FOR YOUR LIFE!!!! Do anything you can to not take this class from him. Drop out of college -whatever it takes. He goes off on tangents and stories instead of teaching. And get this, that's what's on the exam, except only sorta. It's actually out of nowhere. NOWHERE. You think you know the material after reading the book but you are wrong.
he is a terrible professor. His exact words were " if you are in Greek life you will not pass my class." If you don't think like he does then you will not pass his test.
I am on a sports team at the university here which makes me miss class on occasion which did not work for him and basically told me i would fail no matter what i did. his test questions do not even relate to the class sometimes and brings up trick questions all the time on his tests.
Dr. Gay is a really nice man, he's just not a very good instructor. I don't think I would've passed this class if we didn't have SI. Make sure to attend class and SI. I slept through my final and he still let me take it, however I don't reccommend this.
Made the class way more difficult than it should have been. Lectures are a complete waste of time. If he didn't take attendance, I could've not shown up one time and made the same exact grade. Half of the class withdrew after the second test. Worst professor on this campus.
wow. Simply astonishing.
I studied abroad for this class because I was told it was a lot easier. It sucked. There were so many papers dues, at least two due a week. Said we would have quizzes, never did. We had a final split into two days. I don't think we have learned enough to have a two day final. Overall, he is a very nice man, but the class has nothing to do with econ
Run for your life. I wouldn't wish this class on my worst enemey.
