I took his 3 hour class and he did not bore me at all! He's very well spoken and it's just nice listening to him talk.
Not too shabby. Was very understanding with me and generally a good guy. Well spoken.
He's a fantastic teacher & you'll learn alot from him. The downside - he's a really hard grader. I haven't gotten anything less than an A on a history paper and he gave me a C and even told me to consult the writing center. So watch out for his crucial grading!
He's a good teacher, it's a lecture class but for simply just talking he does a good job. Obviously loves what he does, ask him anything, he'll probably know it and have a story about it haha. Yeah, 3 tests, final not accumulative. But, participation is accounted for. read the book!!
Lecture class, skips around when he lectures although he does tell some interesting stories. There is no curve or extra credit so the three tests make up your grade and they aren't always the easiest things. Try to go to the review sessions.
This guy is a trip. Has a interesting voice and sometimes funny. He is very professional and can make students feel pretty stupid. Follow his directions to the "T". He is a very firm grader, so be sure to read and study. Also, he always gives two papers a semester.
His voice and gestures while speaking are very dramatic and make what he's talking about a whole lot more interesting. He's a pretty fair grader on tests, but somehwat unclear on papers. He's pretty good looking too!
He is a great lecturer, very clear and knowledgeable. He prescribes a lot of reading, but I got an A in the class without even opening one of the four books. His lectures tell ALL, and are very engaging. He's not easy, but if you listen you will do well. I would highly recommend.
One of the best profs I've had! Very interesting, engaging, and entertaining prof. He intertwines contemporary stories with the history he's lecturing to make it easy and fun to learn. Difficult grader, but I'll take the next class he teaches!!
He is very smart, class is very interesting, but he sounds like kermit the frog so I was constntly annoyed by his voice. Other than that he is cool.
He is very enthusiastic and gives an intersting and informative lecture. However, that's all it is: lecturing. It's a marathon to keep up w/ him. There's absolutely no class discussion or emphasis on anything in particular so analyzing the material as he expects in papers is quite difficult. Yes, he is a very tough grader! But fair.
Wonderful lecturer. Very interested in what he is teaching and has a wide range of knowledge about it. Book is unnecessary, at least in summer session. Just make sure you attend class and TAKE NOTES!! And definately define those keyterms he gives you.
Fantastic professor! I had a lot of trouble with US history until him. Very interesting stories, throws in facts that make the story more interesting. Puts everything into context, like how one event affects or is comparable to another event. All in all, FANTASTIC!
All he does is lecture and he is boring as hell and sounds like Kermit. Also he yells all the time instead of adjusting his voice to the size of the class. by far not my fav
SO HARD!
This professor is so HARD!!! Lectures are boring as hell, and its almost impossible to pass his tests.. DO NOT TAKE
wow, i dont know wat you guys are talking about, but his professor has so much enthusiasm in his work that class is NOT that boring. Every class is different with a different type of story each class. Ok, so the tests are a little hard, but just cuz it was one class a week. REALLY GREAT TEACHER!
Ok so here it is: this professor is HILLARIOUS. He flips out over nothing and he has all these weird ass comments that'll catch you offgard and keep you awake. ex: there were so many prositutes during the guilded age that if you swung a dead cat while walking down the street you'd hit atleast 10.(or something like that).
He was a very good history teacher. I actually did not fall asleep in his class which was very suprising for a history class. You will do well if you take good notes and keep up with the reading. his exams arent very hard at all. the key words he gives you is very helpful also.
tests arent that bad. he is very passionate about it and his lectures were never boring. take him.
A lecture class, so sometimes it was boring (unless you love history), but he is an extremely good lecturer/speaker, very prepared for class. Look at the online quizzes (website on back of the book) for many of the test questions. Do the reviews.
I have a bias in that I love History, but his lectures really were not boring at all. Funny, insightful, information packed lectures delivered with enthusiasm. Take test studying seriously and you will have no problems.
Has a very commanding presence and voice and really knows his stuff. Very helpful, never any surprises on tests, nice guy. I would definitely recommend trying to get him if you take a history course.
This was a very interesting class! However he tried to cram too much into a 5 week summer session, 2 exams and 3 papers on some very long books, in addition to the regular textbooks. It was insane! He would probably be all right in a regular semester, but don't take him in the summer!!!!!!
Class was interesting and it was an interesting topic. It was summer class so schedule was very packed but overall it was good. He kept the lectures interesting considering they were 2 hours a day, 4 days a week and the exams were very straightforward.
This teacher sounds like Kermit the frog. Class was interesting, but a lot of work for a summer course! 3 books and papers on top of the lecture notes and exams. Material isn't hard, but take during the fall or spring to avoid heavy course load.
He is an amazing teacher who knows his information and really helpful if you come to class you will have no problems when it comes to taking the tests. You don't really need the book but it does help because he moves very quickly. Has a good sense of humor and makes the class interesting with his explanations. If you can take his class
Took it over the summer, a lot of work but fun! He made it very clear what exams would cover, which was nice.
Good Speaker on boring material
good teacher. clearly passionate about history. Not super easy, but very fair.
Terrific teacher. Speaks extremely clearly and is very interesting. I actually enjoyed going to this class. He takes role so be sure to go to class. He gives you a study sheet for each of his exams (3) and they cover exactly whats on the study sheet. Go to class, take notes, review them for the exam, and you'll get an A.
One of the best professors at GMU. Lectures are interesting; he is fair and straightforward. Classes are enjoyable to attend. Would definitely take other classes with him.
Sounds ever so slightly like Kermit the Frog. If you like history you will like this professor. He makes an effort to answer every question - if he doesn't know it on the spot he will look it up. His lectures are crammed with info and his grading is firm but fair.
AMAZING...one of the best professors i've had. he's so smart, very clear, super interesting and overall perfect professor. i wish i could take more of his classes b/c honestly, i learned a ton about history and felt smarter every time i left his class, he is enlightening, fun & a great professor who actually teaches you valuable material!
Great guy and wonderful professor. He seems a bit intimidating at first, but he just wants everyone to put in their max effort. I took him for both sections of American history (601,602) and I didn't regret it one bit. He has a great sense of humor too! Highly recommended.
Overall, a good professor. Lectures are very informative and interesting. He is a fair grader. I was sad the class was over. My only criticism is that if you try to talk to him one-on-one, he is a bit aloof. He seemed to be friendlier with students who had taken other classes with him though.
Dr. Gerleman is the best professor I have ever had. He is so enthusiastic when he teaches, I always feel smarter after I leave class. The tests are in a variety of different formats which I really appreciate. Be sure to attend classes as he takes attendance for a grade, but I would sincerely never dream of skipping his class. Truly the best prof.
If you don't like history don't take this class. there is too much information for you to remember for each test. every class is extremely heavy in lecture and a lot of information in one class. be sure to read the textbook and the glossary it will help.
Don't take this if it is a general elective. Take Western Civ. He expects you to know the whole history of America by the end of the semester. Goes way to fast with powerpoints and has too much information. Boring class. Has a sign in sheet going around class every class. 3 exams, 1 essay, and an extra credit essay. Do bad on any of those and yikes
Prof. Gerleman is a great professor its just there are only 5 grades in the entire class. This section is extremely lecture heavy and test heavy. There is entirely too much information to memorize for a test. I will never take a exam based course ever again
He has to be one of the most boring professors ever. Long and boring lecture with endless quizzes and exams. I border lined failed.
Stay away , he is the most knitpickey prof ever and he will fail you.
hard tests, long lectures. boring. get ready to work your butt off
Best prof at GMU, period. My hand's still killing me from all the notes- tons of lecture and you better attend/listen, but his stories/extra tidbits make all the info so palatable and his animated lecture style is SO MUCH FUN. He cracked me up often (without trying). Detail oriented, follow all directions for papers.
This prof is the best, I hate history and he made me want to pay attention and learn. Went and hung out in office hours to go over tests and go points back cause I caught a mistake. My friend and I are the only ones that got those points back, so go to office hours.
This is hard, if you havent previously learned some of this information it is kind of hard to retain. His lectures arent clear, test are tricky, but if you go to class every meeting itll bring your grade up
Exam heavy so make sure you pay attention in class. The whole lecture is about history that you learned all through high school but with detailed questions on the exam. Attendance will boost your grade and so will the map component at the final. Very passionate about what he teaches but if your tired you will zone out. Note heavy and barely passed.
Worst Class ever! No curves! Take History with any other professor if you want to have a good grade. Tests are tricky and there's no homework assigned which is bad. The class is based on tests and the slides posted on BB are way too long. If you are going to take History with this professor be ready to suffer! It's Horrible!!
Hes a respectful professor, but grades harshly on all the assignments. He does not curve whatsoever. His lectures are very long and heavy.
I loved his lectures. He is very eloquent. His syllabus is easy to understand. It takes time to settle to his style of lectures, but after sometime, you would be able to see what he is trying to convey. If you are not interested in history be prepared to read quite a lot.
He is a really knowledgable professor in Mason. The lecture he delivers is attractive but extensive. The tests are really difficult (three tests each constitutes 25%) and he won't curve your grade at all. No homework to boost your grade.
Really amazing professor. He's very knowledgable and makes a core class interesting. He takes attendance daily so you have to show up. I didn't use the textbook except for the final paper, his power points are all you need to pass **the power points he uses during lectures are NOT the same that he posts online so you have to show up.
His lectures are very boring if you are not super into history. He knows what he is talking about but has no idea how to convey it to students in an interesting way. His tests make up 75% of your grade and are not curved at all. He also does not put the same powerpoint on blackboard that he uses in class. Powerpoint have too many words on them.
If you are taking this class because it's required and need to take it, DO NOT CHOOSE HIM. He's a really smart professor but he will have no mercy in grading or late work. There are only 4 assignments that make up your grade. And the tests are really really hard. His lectures are boring and not worth going to class, but attendance is mandatory.
He knows what he's talking about but his class is hard. Vey lecture heavy and they are boring. Tests are hard but passable. Take him as long as you don't expect an A.
If you need a professor who cares, not him.
I took his hist125 this summer2020 online. There are eight quizesstwo examsone final paper. If you plan to read carefullythen they are easy to get 85-95. For the final paperplease take your time at least one month to prepare it.
Honestly, If you struggle with history, do not take this professor. He speeds through his lectures/slides and doesn't allow technology to take notes. Not enough time is given to write down the information on the slides. Very intelligent man but the type that has to let you know it. Class will only be interesting to you if you are a history buff.
I had him during the pandemic and it was asynchronous, very little contact with him. Powerpoints and the textbook were the main source of learning. Only things in the gradebook are quizzes and tests and one final paper. The quizzes+tests are all almost word for word from either the ppt or the textbook. Overall was alright, wouldn't take again tho.
Good class if you want to learn something new. Dreadful if you don't care. He'll call you out if you're dozing off. I'm pretty sure he had memorized his lectures, which made them pretty seamless and jam packed with info. Didn't need to study for his tests just because i was so engaged with listening in class.
Gerleman lectures like he's telling this grand story. Honestly, I'm a nursing major and history does not interest me, but he made it fun. LISTEN IN LECTURE OR YOU WILL FAIL, its not all about notes, the little things he says are tested on. I worked my ass off and I'm barely passing. TBH his exams and biweekly quizes are the bane of my existence.
Don't take this professor if you don't love history. Prof. Gerleman is pretty solid. He definitely knows he's talking about & the entire class is lecture. Be prepared to take notes AND listen during whole class. Grades are made up of only biweekly quizzes, 3 tests, & a final exam & paper. I love history, so I was engaged and enjoyed the material.
Love it! I'm still in the process of taking it, but I'm having a grand time! He is a very engaging lecturer, and you can tell he cares about what he's saying. GO TO CLASS. Not kidding. Quick rec: take notes on what he says while in class and look over the PPTs after! Expect to study a lot, but exams aren't unfair. Reach out for help, he'll help!
He is very enthusiastic about history, which is nice. But I highly dont recommend this class if you struggle with attendance. Missing a few lectures can heavily impact your grade (some of the things he says may not be on the ppts so you should take notes). There are also quizzes every 2 weeks, 3 tests, and a mandatory final essay.
Amazing professor who knows his stuff. There is a new lecture every single class, so skipping is not an option. I love history, so I understood the material and paid attention during class. If 1 hour lectures while taking notes aren't ur thing, i would recommend choosing something else. Bi weekly quizzes, 3 tests, and a final paper. Good luck!
His lectures are interesting and he's a really good storyteller, but if you're just taking the class for the credit maybe pass on him. I found it hard to figure out what would be on the tests from the book/lectures so I would always study the wrong things; I ended up getting an A, but it was tough. Also , which was a bit distracting.
I don't hate the professor, I just strongly recommend someone else if you aren't actually interested in the class. As someone who isn't very interested in history, I found his lectures extremely dry, and I get the feeling he tailors his classes towards his lectures towards people who are interested in history. If its for credits, find someone else.
From 3pm to 4:15 all he does is talk at the front. Only grades are quizzes and tests. Tests are 50 questions and 65 minutes to complete and the questions are worded very difficultly and are extremely hard to understand. I will probably have to retake this class with a different professor. only take him if you already understand history.
He knows his stuff but speeds through the lectures. His way of talking and wording makes it hard to understand the lesson. Also make it hard to understand the questions on the quizzes and test. The only form of work in the class are quizzes and test. Confusing to know what to study. I currently have D+ in the class and trying to bump it up to a C
Professor Gerleman was awesome! I enjoyed his lectures and did not find the course work to be too difficult or time consuming. I was one of a few people who still was going to class by the end of the semester he was appreciative of that by giving us extra support prior to the final.
Show up to class and be willing to read the entire textbook if you want an A. He gives out a final paper with a final exam, do the paper before finals week comes or youll be stressed out as it is. He'll also speed through lectures, overall take him only if you love history with a passion. I dont hate history and I thought id do well, I was wrong.
This professor is very lecture heavy & his lectures require a lot of attention. It's not mandatory to go to class but would be recommended for better understanding. He gives quizzes every two weeks and there's two exams before the final. There's a final paper that is required or it's an automatic failure of the class, an exam, and a map component.
Trust. A final paper AND a final exam. I couldnt study for the final exam and did poorly on the final paper. took me weeks of outlining and revising to even do mediocre on the paper, he barely gave any input. take him if u only love history and I dont recommend. ill have to retake this class b/c it destroyed my gpa. ALWAYS COME TO CLASS IF U TAKE.
I was supposed to take this class with a professor I was familiar with but ended up with Professor Gerleman instead at the last minute and I regret not swapping professors then. REQUIRED final paper or fail class automatically, very lecture heavy and quizzes don't come exactly from what was said in class. Take at your own risk.
His lectures are very well-prepared, but you can use his slides and the textbook to get the necessary information. This is the most basic world history course so you can easily use resources to get great scores on the online quizzes and exams. Do well on the multiple choice and you can get away with the bare minimum on the mandatory final paper.
Dr. Gerleman is great! Very passionate and knowledgeable of history. His HIST 125 section is not that hard imo. Just go to class and read the textbook. You can skim it if you don't really care about history, he goes over the important things in class. Will gladly answer questions. Don't procrastinate on the final paper tho, but it's kinda easy tbh.
Fairly easy core requirement class, but he was very engaging. There were only a few quizzes and exams and they weren't too hard. There is however a final 5-10 page paper, but that's honestly the worst thing and you can start it as soon as the semester starts.
I learned English as a second language and have had no problems communicating and understanding people and professors except him; he uses big fancy English words that made no sense. I always watched the crash course videos he posted, but, the class was still very engaging, so I showed up despite not understanding him well
This class ended up being way too much reading and writing. If you read all the assigned material it will take you 3+ hour. You will also write a minimum of eight pages a week. There is also too much unnecessary group work every week. Be confident in your abilities to know properly research and cite - very important.
I took this class because it seemed interesting - ended up spending at least 15 hours a week outside of class to get an A. Dr. G knows what he is talking about, and lectures were always interesting, but there were entirely too many papers and readings. Lots of group discussions and grading was tough. I learned a lot but was under a lot of stress.
Find it difficult to figure out what is going to be on the quizzes/tests even with the study guide. DON'T SKIP CLASS or you will miss out on a lot of key information.
His class was enjoyable to listen to, his assignments, quizzes, and tests are all online but needed to be done in a certain time frame which is reasonable. He tries to make the stuff we learn relatable and a bit more fun to understand. At the end of the day its just a standard lecture that you sit through and just listen.
he's nice and lectures are interesting if you like history. questions on exams are confusing (wording THROWS you off), attendance not required, and write a final paper only uses primary sources... for a 100 level course class.....
Always behind content, three exams, and one paper counted as a final. Attendance isn't required and posts all sides online. Only professor that was available for 122 spring 2024 so I had no other choice.
I always admired studying and learning about American History, until Dr. Gerleman's class. The only good thing about him is his lectures. The issues are the final paper which only allows primary sources, Exams & quiz questions are hard to read because of wording. Unfortunately, he was the only professor teaching. Please try to avoid taking him.
Very easygoing in class and clearly has a passion for history. Assignments were relatively simple (readings + quizzes alternate every week) and assessments/exams were no sweat (3 exams + map labeling). There is also a final paper, with somewhat annoying requirements. Try attending every lecture and take notes as his uploaded slides are sparse.
Dr. Gerleman was okay, he was very nice, but I honestly just didn't enjoy the class, as the subject matter was very dense and dull. Quizzes every week, a midterm, and a final is all that counted for the final grade. However, he did let us do a presentation for extra credit. Was available anytime you needed help and responded right away to emails.
Professor Gerleman is the best. His lectures show his in-depth knowledge of History, and he cares about the students' success. If you do not do well in his classes, it could be because you either don't pay attention, take notes, or read the material. He lays out the course materials in an understandable way and communicates expectations. 10/10!
He is okay. His lectures are pretty interesting but I would say he is a tough grader. A bit condescending sometimes as I wish he acknowledged not everyone in the class is a history major. He does pass around an attendance sheet sometimes. He did 3 tests and short writings for grades along with quizzes.
Amazing lectures, and I highly recommend him for any history major. His class is difficult, and quizes can be rough, but if you genuinely enjoy the topic I have not seen a better speaker. I can understand how his class may be more difficult for those who do not enjoy the subject, but if you do, he is an amazing teacher who enjoys his job
My level of disappointment with this man cannot be understated. Truly believes there is only one side to history. Most of the history content taught isn't the main ideas of the time period. If you're a freshman, this class will be difficult; if you're in an upperclass, your time and money are better spent elsewhere. Truly an insufferable man.
Very unsympathetic towards students, you'd think you're taking a level 400 course with how he treats his class. Was difficult to work with regarding turning things in late and overall just did not allow any kind of flexibility. Lectures were informative, however I would NOT take again just due to his insensitivity.
The lectures are very good, he knows what he is talking about. However, he's a bit condescending. Clear grading criteria, 5 mini-essays, 6 quizzes, 3 exams, and a capstone paper. He's very persistent on Chicago Style citations and requires only primary sources used for the final 5 page paper. Other than that, I enjoyed listening in the lectures.
I do not recommend this class for anyone, i have no clue why his rating are this high to begin with. He is not willing to help, the class is very test heavy and he is genuinely so hard to understand. I tried to focus and learn but its almost impossible, I typically don't go out of my way to write a review, this is my first and last hopefully.
All you do is listen to lectures, no in class assignments, expected to just watch random youtube videos and read PowerPoint slides and expected to do good on exams just from that.
- Heard talking bad about students - Wants students to fail - Sounds like he is being nice, however has attitude behind his voice - Does not help you get started in the right direction
Looks forward to students failing and prays for their downfall.
Cannot teach
So hard, don't take this professor, the only good part is the lecture slides, and the online quiz. Tests is so hard
Don't take this class.
I didn't have the best experience in this class. It's partially on me because I didn't consistently study, but at the same time, I found it hard to follow along during class! I wish the class was somehow more interactive.. I mostly felt lost because of the heavy lectures and the confusing wording. It was just too much to absorb/memorize at once.
Class is very hard, he will provide for you a study guide papers for each chapter but inside you will have to go and find yourself a definition for each terms, but learning only the definition will not help you because he will give some of the question outside of it and required you have to think logically if it links together or not
Lectures are all over the place and jump quickly between locations and topics, which makes them hard to follow. It's often unclear why we're covering certain things or how they connect. The study materials didn't really help with quizzes or exams. If you are not a history major, don't take his class if you want to do well.
His lectures are pretty good IMO. His exams are definitely harder than the essays and quizzes, but not that bad if you invest enough time into studying(I threw the second midterm so my grade died). I'm not sure if his reviews are skewed because there's a large proportion of freshmen among his students, but I thought he was relatively decent.
