Indv 103: What is Politics. Horrible Class. I have an "A", but he is not a good teacher. He is a bad lecturer, less than 1/2 the class shows up, he mocks students and makes them feel as if they were very small. I regret taking this class
i am currently in professor gibbs' "american foreign policy" class, and i completely disagree with previous comments. dr. gibbs' lectures are wonderful, informative, and yet self-ironic.
Really Really Really hates G.W. Bush
Yes, Professor Gibbs is critical of George Bush...this is not a bad thing! Gibbs is informed, logical, and open to other opinions.
While well-informed and often quite interesting, lets his own political views be known far too often and uses the class to get on his soapbox.
As long as you don't get frightened by any deviation from mainstream news, Gibbs is intelligent, balanced, knowledgable, and fairly open minded. Just don't expect that much help outside of class as he is one of those "very busy and important" types.
He sucks
Dr. Gibbs is very knowledgable in his subject area, and tends to think he is always right; he seems to get somewhat offended when a student points out a mistake of his. I found this class fairly interesting, especially the CIA Covert Operations, he teaches students not to blindly follow the gov't
Great guy love his classes took all I was allowed to take. Very demanding on class load but everything required is interesting.
Very intelligent, however, you can tell he was probably picked on in school and is making up for it now by belittling students and squashing any thought opposed to his. Did not speak about his views much due to recent allegations that he is a communist (true or not I am not sure). However, the class itself is very interesting. Just don't talk.
Big regrets taking this Anti-American course. It was a soapbox every class for Gibbs to talk**** about America. SOme points were interesting, but strayed far away from subject matter. Very bias and infuriating.
amazing class, and witty professor
the class was supposed tobe a history class, but turned into a conspiracy lecture. the man does not like america or anything to do with authority. doesnt much know what he's talking about, makes a lot up. not very accessable, and if you do go to office hours, you leave more confused than when you got there. tests and papers biased and suck..liberal
last rater needs to get his facts correct. Gibbs has never taught HIST 438.
Dr. Gibbs doesnt like anyone to be late and will call you out. He assigns alot of reading but most of it has not been tested on so don't go overboard with it. He knows more than anyone at the UofA about Covert Ops, but he is very cynical at times which if you don't have your own convictions will bother you. Dont talk in class if ur clueless
Great class, very interesting material. He is the best lecturer I have had yet at U of A.
He is an excellent teacher. He doesn't make things up as others say he does; his work is well researched and his opinions are well founded. People who don't like his work simply disagree with him and in true conservative fashion cry conspiracy theorist. What Gibbs thinks of you doesn't even matter b/c the TA grades everything. Very smart man!
Gibbs is an economics-uber-alles guy, and if you're anything short of that you're going to find stuff to argue with. If you can get past that, he's brilliant and fascinating. He packs 50 years of foreign-policy scholarship into 4 months. A tough grader but a pretty fair one. Exams aren't too hard. One of the best classes you'll ever take.
fabulous.didn't know or care about foreign policy until Gibss.VERY professional(refreshing).made FP easy to understand and interesting.encourages comments of all kinds.ppl who say he is anti-communist or wtvr are just scared.amazing teacher, LOVES u 2 raise ur hand.no matter your view.shocking how helpful he was w the paper, REALLY helps w sources
Dr. Gibbs is an excellent professor, and I loved his class. He really makes you think about things that are happening in the world. I loved every moment of his class. I was impressed with his method.
The guy is going to have his haters simply because he is so out there with his (admittedly leftist) political bent, although his barrage of facts could make any conservative apologist blush. He's a class act, a funny guy that makes you think during lecture and realize that the skills he teaches you will use for the rest of your thinking life.
I was very excited to take this class, however; once we began, lectures were very boring and not required to go to. The test are very biased and you need to relate to what Gibbs and the T.A's want. I have over a 3.5 and I had to take a W because of the test. Gibbs is a very liberal teacher who is also extremely rude at office hours. STAY AWAY!!!!
I was expecting...politics, but didn't get much. T.A's are a joke and grade based on what there views/beliefs are...which makes it hard for a republican like me. Not an extremely hard class, just surprising when you get nothing but C's for quality work. Not recommended, stay away.
The class what called "What is politic?".....I still don't know . The class isn't too bad though. 3 exams (1 take-home). You do not need to attend lecture. He knows what he's talking about and is passionate about what he teaches...but not a great teacher.
Fairly easy course provided you say what the professor says. Going to class is definitely optional. You will rarely interact with Gibbs, the real issue are the TAs. Look for the kinder ones if there are any because some of the hardliners will grade a lot tougher. Course is easy, take home final that only can improve overall grade. Do it to it.
I love this man. He is highly intellectual, and he has a great love for humanity and knowledge. This class is the highpoint of my week.
What is Politics? This class focused on arguments, propaganda and the Soviet Union. Didn't really match with the title of the course but is one I'd recommend. As long as you study and do the three assignments, you'll be fine. Definitely a lot better than some of the INDV's my friends have been in. Gibbs' TAs do the grading, he just lectures.
There are only two midterms and a paper for this class and an optional final worth 40 percent of your grade. He is boring at times and class is not mandatory as all the lectures are online. Once you get into the russian revolution it is interesting. Not really about politics though, only fallacies and propaganda.
I took his class What Is Politcs... DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. It was by far the worst and most pointless class I have every taken. His lectures are random and mostly pointless. He is a hard core democrat. He expects you to participate in discuss but if your opinion does not match his he spends the next 20 mins explaining why your opinion is wrong
Do NOT take this class. It was incredibly boring and he is very unclear. Everything is online so that is good if you don't plan on going to class every day. It seemed like his T.A.'s had no idea how to grade because half the class would get 99% and the other half the class would get 50% for the same quality of work. VERY VERY BORING, not intersting
NO need to go to class, his lectures are redundant. TA's grade the papers, and there are two in class tests one take home, and an optional final. You have to use their opinions on papers, and your grade depends on which ta grades your paper. Fairly easy, but soo boring
This class turned out pretty easy, but Prof. Gibbs is an awful lecturer. There are 3 midterms, and an optional final. I didn't have to take the final cause I already had an A which was nice. Overall though this class was extremely dull and boring. I would not recommend unless you are desperate.
By far the worst class i've ever taken. I never missed a class and still managed to get a C. He doesn't grade anything. His TA's grade the the two tests and one paper. There are only 3 grades in the class! DO NOT TAKE THIS!!!!
Lectures are dull at best, but the two exams are pretty simple. The essay is a little trickier, but ask questions about your analysis and ideas and you should be fine. The TAs really do the work, but if they are anything like the TAs I had, they are plenty helpful. The class isn't a big deal if you can make it through the boredom.
The class was called "What is politics?". I felt like we didn't talk about politics at all. The class was very easy. I did a total of about 30 hrs of outside work for the entire semester.
I went to the first two lectures and couldnt go anymore they were so dull. I never went to class except the day before exam and the day of, i ended up with a C which isnt bad seeing how i never went or took notes. It;s an okay class but not my first choice
He is certainly an opinionated teacher. He knows what he is talking about and brings many interesting topics to discussion. You will learn mostly about the dirty / not well known U.S. foreign interventions. I enjoyed the class, I learned a lot because it was not the events you find in a normal American history book. Got a B.
Gibbs is passionate about International Relations and it shows during his lectures. Take this class, he will teach you things that you never knew about politics and Government goings-on through history. Awesome class and I urge everyone to take it even if you don't have to.
Gibbs is by far the best professor I have had at the UA. His lectures are enticing and the content is great (supported by the fact that I went to my 9:30am lecture half dead from my 21st the night before at the Buff!!!) . I HIGHLY recommend his HIST450 class on US foreign relations since 1918; dont listen to those slackers who denounce him!
Very fun teacher to listen to. Unabashedly realistic in his assessment of history, despite it being politically incorrect. Tells it like it is, and not how we want it to be. Tests are writing-intensive, while term paper is large and professor grades and ensures against plagiarism like a nazi.Looking to take another class with him.
One of the best professors I've had. Currently trying to get into his clas senxt semester. You can tell that he is passionate about this topic and he is incredibly knowledgable. His humor is incredibly dry and probably goes over many students' heads, but nonetheless makes class even more interesting. Get a front row seat in his lectures.
A great lecturer. He is very opinionated, but he is pretty brilliant. The exams were easy, as was the paper. The readings were very interesting but ultimately unnecessary.
Very smart guy, but the TA grade all the tests. Your final score is based of just 3 Test and an optional 4th final. His politics class doesnt even talk about politics. I don't recomend taking it. Other classes might be better
I don't recommend this class. It is boring and he is very opinionated and if your opinion doesn't match his your wrong. The class is not focused on What is Politics at all, it is more of a discussion politics during the 1900's. This class is a breeding ground for liberal minds posed against the US government.
So boring, do not take the course. He is a smart guy, but the class isn't even about politics it focuses on propaganda and World War 2. Got a B but I hated going to class everyday. Find a different Indiv
odd dude, but the lectures pose interesting questions and definitely illuminate perverse politics. TA's grade everything. Easy tests and such, but not really tied into the subject matter and very subjective based on the TAs grading. Personally didnt write the second essay, told them i got a 90 on it, got an A overall so doable, but not fulfilling.
I found this class very interesting I went everyday and actually enjoyed the lectures but the grading SUCKS you have basically 3 things that determine your whole grade and most of them are papers. the only reason I DO NOT recommend this class is because of the grading otherwise its interesting
The most interesting, most informative class I had during my time at the U of A. Mr. Gibbs is very knowledgeable and makes himself available for questions. I'm a right-winger and a veteran, so we agreed on almost nothing politically, but he's a respectful guy who won't shut you down just for having different views. Great debates, and a great class.
Gibbs arrives to class empty handed and makes his way to the podium. The moment class is set to begin he dives into his lecture at a brisk, energetic pace. Instantly, I'm mesmerized by its content; fascinating, accessible, vast. I type furiously. But suddenly, it ends. And for the first time in my life, I don't want class to end.
This professor is excellent and passionate about his work! Just remember that his class may offend you and be prepared to learn a lot.
The information he knows regarding the CIA and its operations it absolutely incredible. This class was one of my favorites and would recommend it to anyone. Only bad thing was he grades hard and only grades you on your mid term, research paper and final. Mr. Gibbs is a bit egotistic in his views but does invite students to discuss their views.
You're lucky if you get to have his class. He's a genius and has his Dr. from MIT. This is the best class I've ever taken. I never liked history but this blew my mind. He can be hard because he's incredibly smart but if you want a great class where you just have to write down the 3 things he writes down every class to make an A lol, take this class
Sharp thinker, great teacher.
EXCELLENT! The best. He has opinions about US foreign policy, based on his knowledge. Everyone should take his classes.
This is the worst class I have taken so far. It is extremely boring and your grade is only based on three things. At the beginning of the semester I went to class every time but towards the end found them to be useless to attend. Unless you have to have this class, I recommend you don't take it.
Professor Gibbs is a very smart man and definitely knows what he's talking about. However, this class was one of the worst I've taken. Grade is determined by only 3 exams, attendance isn't record (even if you show up), and the material is dry. Don't take this class unless you need to.
Fantastic, brilliant, inspiring. A true teacher, passionate about revealing the truth and eliminating white washing from American History.
Prof. Gibbs gives students an adequate introduction into political ideas, encourages critical thought about mediagovernment claims about US foreign policy. He is VERY critical of humanitarian approaches! Unfortunately, he sometimes fails to take theory seriously and is quick to claim that economics explain almost the entirety of foreign policy.
Dr. Gibbs is not a particularly nice guy but he is brilliant and I found him and his class fascinating. It's true though that there were only 3 assignment all semester but I didn't think he graded them too harshly. Just be ready for him to bash on the United States government and its foreign policy all semester (which is deserved).
Attendance isn't mandatory, but highly advised if you want to pass. No homework and only 3 exams for the course. Gibbs is very intelligent and informative but the lectures can be dry. Overall a good class and an easy enough gen ed if you are willing to show up and listen.
Gibbs is arrogant, unfriendly, and doesn't care about students or bother to learn student's names. Don't bother doing the readings, they never come up, except for 1984. He has TAs do all the grading, there is no transparency or rubric. TAs are lazy and take weeks to grade assignments. Worst class ever. Don't take this class unless you HAVE to!
Yes, David Gibbs is a little dull, but he has a dry sense of humor. He mostly uses sarcasm in his classes. He welcomes opinions from students.
He is liberal and I love it. He is amazingly smart; yes he can be dull sometimes. You can learn a lot from him.
Prof Gibbs was, to be nice, a piece of work. I thought his lectures were interesting once he actually got into the propaganda stuff, but the first 2 months are just about logical fallacies. There are 3 midterms and an optional final. Tough grader and he is unhelpful! His T.A.'s helped a lot though with essay critique. Read 1984!
This was my first experience with a class that focused on politics so i was not entirely sure what to expect, However much to my surprise this was one of my favorite classes. Although challenging the class was extremely interesting. lectures were simple w/out ppts but he keeps the lectures interesting and there are only four assignments due.
This class would be great with a different professor. Gibbs is arrogant and unfriendly- on more than one occasion, I asked for help and he said no. He tends to speak more about himself than the material. Class is easy as there are 3 tests and an optional final. The TAs for the class are amazing and it can be a really easy A if you seek their help!
Most oftentimes, Gibbs uses the lectures as a platform for his personal beliefs. That's pretty ironic in a class that focuses on propaganda. It wasn't worth to get up at 7 AM when it was more than a 50/50 chance I'd just have to listen to him rant. Would not take again or recommend.
I am an Econ major, and I went into this history class thinking it was going to be painful. It was not in the slightest bit. Mr. Gibbs is a very sweet and intelligent man. He really knows his material and takes the time to make sure everyone understands his points. 10 Papers + attendance is your grade. If you average A on the papers, no finals. (:
Gibbs is a smart and intelligent man. Yes, he can come across as 'arrogant' but that's his personality, get over it. He likes to shares his opinions which is fine. Overall, course is great and simple - ATTEND CLASS take notes and you will do well. TA's Joe, James and Clea are very helpful. I personally went to Joe most of the time and he was great
Opinionated and massive knowledge on all of the subjects. Uses a lot of interesting sources that show the real picture. Don't take this class if you are die-hard Bald Eagle who believes that the US doesn't do anything wrong. Attend the lectures and you should pass. There was only 3 grades the whole class. 2 exams and a Final.
Prof. Gibbs is GOLD, his lectures tend to give out a lot of info so you might want to attend those. You will read George Orwell's 1984 (which is awesome). A couple of essays and extra credit opportunity. Make sure to study the fallacies for the first exam, and George Orwell's book for the second one. Overall a piece of cake, I hardly showed up.
Amazing lectures. Doesn't take attendance, but you wont do well if you skip. No homework, just listen and take notes in class and you'll be good.
Gibbs is a good professor. You can get abundant knowledge from his class. However, it is hard to take notes in his lectures because he never uses powerpoints, and all grades are essay exams.
Only graded on 3 midterms and optional final. First midterm is a twelve question test based on the first 6 weeks. Second midterm is a take home essay. Third midterm is an in-class essay. Midterms are not too bad if you go to every class and meet with your TAs. Pretty manageable class if you show up.
Although attendance is not mandatory, you must show up to class if you want to do well. Lectures easy to follow, so you wont be bored. Class is very test heavy, those are the only grades in the class, but there is an optional final if you feel unhappy with your overall grade. Class content was very interesting and will be useful in later life.
Great professor. Kind of a hard ass. He likes to ask people questions and he will end up answering the question. Only a midterm, rough draft of research paper, and final draft are grades in the course. Teaches a lot regarding foreign policy. Easy grader, would recommend to anyone.
This course made me nervous when I first selected it, but, honestly, it was a pretty solid choice. It is graded by few things, so you have to do well, but as long as you study, you'll be fine! The reading was not very necessary except for definitions on the first exam. Second exam was a take home essay. Third was in class essay. Very helpful TAs!
Gibbs is the man. Took him my freshman year. One of the most interesting dudes you will ever come across. Take for the life experience. Listening to him is awesome.
He has a lot of interesting lectures. If you are not a good tester then this class may not be for you. The grade is made up of 3 tests and that is it. Overall a really knowledgable guy and I learned some cool information from the class which is all you can really hope for.
Professor Gibbs is one of the smartest guys out there. His lectures are always super interesting and attendance isn't mandatory but you won't do well if you don't go. The tests are hard but if you study a lot you'll be fine. The TAs are also super nice and helpful. For sure my favorite/most interesting class !!!
Gibbs means well. He has a specific style and I respect that. But his class made no sende in terms of structure. I felt confused as to what our focus was. Great guy, had excellent things to say. But some direction would've been great.
Your grade is based on 3 exams(and an optional final), thats it! If you don't study you won't pass the exams. A lot of people have negative opinions about Professor Gibbs, but I think they were just upset with their grade in the class. If you go to class and study, you'll be fine. Read 1984!
This class is super easy so long as you agree with the professor. He does not tolerate or accept dissent, but if you figure out what he thinks and write the same thing, he'll give you a good grade every time.
This class wasn't hard but there were very few things that were entered and the things that were entered were graded very harshly. This professor is not the most respectful to say the least. He would call out every student who came in late and disrupt the whole class. Students were not respected at all.
He is a nice guy and I enjoy listening. First test is kinda tough but its ok. Go to class or you will literally fail and check his website before every class.
***NOTE: Have not taken gen-eds with Gibbs, just HIST300s/400s for major You HAVE to show up and you HAVE read. That being said, his lectures are fascinating, he engages with students a lot, and I have re-read some of the readings after the class finished. His classes are a lot of work but they are 100% worth it if you have the time to put into it.
There are three tests with an optional final. If you do not do the optional final each midterm is 33% of your grade. If you do the optional final, the final is worth 40% and the other 3 tests are 20% of your final grade. Make sure to know your fallacies and read 1984.
The class is highly lecture based, with only three midterms taken for the grade. The first midterm is an in class multiple choice test, the second is a take-home essay, and the third is an in class essay. An optional final can be taken to raise your grade. The out of class readings are pointless, other than the assigned novel 1984. Go to class!
He is a very disciplined professor, calls out students who are one minute late, which is unnecessary. He is very enthusiastic about the subject, but his bias is very clear. Other than that, he is a great professor, not your typical history course, it is more a political science course.
Professor Gibbs was a very understanding professor that cared about his students doing well in class. You must attend lecture or you will not do well on the tests. It's a pretty easy class if you study and pay attention during lectures.
2 exams + the final (all essay and short answer) make up the whole grade. Gibbs is old school -- the vast majority of the exam content is based off the lectures, so I'd recommend going to class. He really knows his content, but if you'd be annoyed by an obvious ideological bent, don't take the class. Overall, doable + interesting course
Do you like cold calling, one-sided lessons, and extremely vague criteria on tests? Then this class is for you! This professor taught very repetitive lessons, orally, only of which maybe 20% was relevant to the tests, of which were 1/3 of the final grade, and were poorly structured and boring. You could not pay me to take his class again.
I took Introduction to Political History in Fall 2021, it was one of my favorite classes. Its lecture intensive and your grade is based on 3 exams. 2 of the exams are multiple choice with a writing component and the last exam is a timed essay. If you skip class its difficult to catch up. The textbook doesnt help, I wouldnt recommend buying it.
The class was easy, and I would take the class again but not with this professor. It was interesting, but the lectures were pretty boring. The tests were hard but not impossible if you go to class. Overall a nice enough guy and a decent professor, but it wasn't for me. Also there are no assignments! If you test well then it's an easy gen ed.
Gibbs is great if you absorb lectures well and are already interested in history or political science. He's old school - 2 handwritten exams and 2 papers makeup your entire grade. Attendance isn't mandatory but he tests on the lecture alone, so show up. Slightly boring lectures, if you can follow instructions and write well you'll do fine.
His capstone class was pretty straight forward and I felt very lucky that he allowed me to pick the topic I wrote considering it was a couple years outside of the set time frame. Attendance is required, midterm and final 20 page paper. He is very knowledgeable so he can point you in the right direction if you're lost!
Dr. Gibbs is extremely knowledgable. The exams are entirely based on lecture content so if you don't show up to every class, you won't do well. His classes are very informative and he's good at answering questions - don't be afraid to engage with him. Some reviews say he's boring (maybe, if you don't care for the subject), but he can be very funny.
Gibbs is old school, only has 3 things in the gradebook, 2 multiple choice exams, essay exam an optional essay, and all of the material is only in oral lectures with little to no visual aids so if you miss a lecture you're going to miss a lot of material. Likes people to engage, but can get a little boring, not the worst professor but not engaging
Gibbs is great, but don't bother wasting your time, and his, if you're not a highly motivated student. Not because this class is hard, but because it is so engaging and interesting.
Prof. Gibbs is a fascinating professor. He describes himself as "not a feelings" guy, so he's not really someone to find support and make connections with. But he makes up for it as an instructor. His lectures are extremely interesting and the guy has knowledge for decades. Taking his courses are really cool experiences. But come ready to learn.
Prof. Gibbs is very knowledgeable, but attendance is mandatory as exams rely heavily on lecture content. The class can be engaging if you're interested in the subject, though some may find the professor's bias evident. Using unstuck study alongside the textbook helped me prepare effectively.
Professor Gibbs is extremely intelligent. His lectures could be a bit monotonous, but the actual content of them is interesting, insightful, and relevant. Just make sure to show up for the lectures and you'll be set.
The class was based on 3/4 assignments, and the papers were a pain because he's obsessed with students using AI, so you have to incorporate lecture notes. The TA, James, who graded everything, was a terrible grader. He gave no feedback and would scribble some nonsense feedback that you couldn't even read. There are plenty of other gen eds to take.
