great guy, funny teacher, fun teaching methods and he explains himself
Very good teacher. Somehow the geeks on planet math didn't breed another crappy math teacher, I don't know how but they did.
Gilbert is a really cool teacher for a very dull subject. The book is really easy but kinda time consuming. He is very funny and a fair test writer. Do the homework and you will have no prob.
Great teacher, lots of extra credit! Really easy to understand. Very approachable guy. Kinda goofy in a good way ;-)
very good teacher, very clear and easy
I agree with everyone, he is an awesome teacher and a really nice guy too. Im awful in Math and I did well in this class. I highly recommend him!
Great teacher, i took him twice (different courses). Fun, relaxed personality. Do the homework pay attention in class and you should have a good grade. The material on the tests are presented in lecture, so its a matter of remembering how to do the problems.
Gilbert is one of the hottest teacher in SBCC. Not only that, he is also a very good teacher. He explains statistics very well. The homework is timeconsuming, but as long as you do it, you won't have any problems with midterms, quizes and final ... At least you will have a B on this class ...
i loved this class so much! he is the best stats teacher at SBCC for sure! not to mention the hottest! i love to see him smile - it makes my day:)
This is a great Stat prof. His notes are very clear and easy to go back to when you need help on the homework. He also has a nice smile that helps ease the pain when you are learning t scores and all that other fun stuff!
Super hot teacher and the class is good too :)

This guy is awesome!! If you want to learn math & have fun at the same time, this is the guy to take it with!! To succeed in the class: do your HW assingments & attend class regularly. His quizzes are HW based ?'s (easy). If you do well on this, you should be excellent for the midterms. His grading is flexible & does give partial credit.
At first I thought he was a great teacher, but then I relized he is a gerk who sees everthing black or white. He is harder on the top students, which I think is unfair! Hes not hot, maybe semi-attractive, but so far from hot. He is a pretty good techer overall though, as I person I think he is an ass!
This guy really knows his stuff, but he has a napolean complex in that if he isn't right, his world crumbles. He doesn't "help" his students, he directs them. Not a very hands on teacher. But otherwise, if you are math savvy then go for it.
good guy, i strongly recommend this prof for stats
Easygoing, accesible, helpful. Nice guy overall.
Gilbert is a piece of work. He doesn't realize how obvious some of the stuff he says is, for example, he will say stuff like "this is true for cars but it doesn't have to be cars, it can be dogs cats,...I don't care."
the online class was pretty easy- we were allowed to use a page of equations and notes on each exam, but we had timed online tests every week or so. it was work, but the quizzes keep you on top of things.

took his statistics class online. Do the reading and complete the weekly quiz. Tests are on campus and if you're on top of things they're easy...Good teach....Got a B
good to see a job well done
Gilby definately knows his stuff, but he doesn't relay that info to his students well. He also loves to be very vague on any kind of quiz or test. I've just become fed up with him and wouldn't take any class of his again.
I HATE HIS ONLINE CLASS. HE SEEMS LIKE A SMART GUY BUT IS NOT TO HELPFUL IN HIS ONLINE CLASS. HIS EXAMS ARE REALLY HARD AND DO NOT APPLY TO HIS HOMEWORK. I RECOMMEND NOT TAKING HIS CLASS.
I took his online class. Everything he posted online sounded like he was really tough, but he's actually a very nice guy. For the online class, exams are on-campus. He was very helpful in allowing me to reschedule my exams when another class interfered. Very willing to help, very accessible. I'm not a math person but he made the class fairly easy.
He's cool. Get use to his personality. He makes this lil smirk when he's about to be sarcastic but in a way that is sly. Do all your hw bcause sometimes he asks for it & on days when there r too many absences and u look unprepared, he'll ask for hw ;) ! He's mellow, and a great mathematician. Down to earth kind of guy BUT tests r tricky so study!
Gilby is probably one of the best teachers I have had so far at sbcc. His tests are pretty tough, and he likes to be vague about what will be on his tests, but I learned a lot. I actually thought i was going to fail this class, but i ended up getting a B. But by all means, do not expect an easy A. Be prepared for word problems.
Great guy. Helpful. Presents information very clearly. Tests are tough so keep up with homework and studying.
He makes the class so much fun by telling stories and applying them to the class. The fact that he is so hot also makes it worth it to come to class ;)
I took Gilbert online for statistics and while he may be a good in class teacher his online class was horrible. Nothing was clear and it is very hard to take math when you aren't being taught. LOTS OF WORK, and it didn't pay off (at least for me). Think twice before taking online he may be better in the classroom.
Hot??? Helpful??? Definetely not. Smart, yes, but absolutely lacking in that quality which makes a student feel secure in asking questions. I got the impression that he is bored with teaching. Too many put downs at he expense of the students and Tons of homework.
He is a great teacher. He breaks down the material and makes them really easy. I took him for both 130 and 131 and it helped me alot. I got D in HS calc and the grade jumped up in college. I also got interested in calc. Take him for calc!!!Good Luck!
This teacher makes many mistakes on syllabus and quizzes. Would give students free points than to take constructive feedback. Hard on the eyes: short, small buggy eyes and abrupt manners. If you need a passing grade, you would probably do okay with this instructor. But if you want to actually learn statistics, take this class with someone else.
His class was easy. Although I find myself to be math oriented. Stats is pretty basic math, just applying it differently. He will help you if you ask, plus he has office hours. His tests are straight forward and do not intend to trick you. He does not put material on that you have not learned.
Took his online class. I thought it was extremely hard, but got a B. MUST do homework in book and online. MUST take quizzes and tests. Go to his office hours for help. Not impossible but takes time.
Worst teacher ever! Gives 10-hour homework assignments and then doesn't collect them! That's just lazy!!! Close your eyes and you can imagine you are listening to Dennis Miller.
The online classes are rather annoying. The program minitab and the assignments given are extremely annoying as well. I would rather he just make us do all the homework and turn it in. The math discussion are also kind of annoying. NOT RECOMMENDED FOR ONLINE. Heard he was a good teacher in class though.
He teaches the book as if you already know what is in it.
I was so nervous about taking math 117 becasue so many people told me it was incredibly hard...but It is so much easier than actual math. Mr. Gilbert is so awesome he makes everything understood and is willing to help you if you don't. I hate math but i got A's and B's..i deff reccomment him!!!!
Absolutely loved Gilbert. He recommends homework but doesn't collect most of it so it doesn't bring down your grade. He is willing to discuss grades and will happily work out problems with you. Take this teacher.
Great teacher for a very hard class. Took it online and he was very understanding. Didnt do much of the online work cuz it was bs but got B's on the tests and passed fine. grades tests easily. this class really sucks, but he'll help you pass. take him over others
Took on-line class in summer. Very, very well-organized, which is key for both on-line and summer. Instructor was clear, fair and specifically warned that the class would be very fast-paced and require a substantial amount of work. Both were true.
Mr. Gilbert is the best teacher i have ever had in math!! He is very helpful and explains everything in a way that is very understandable. He answers all of his emails in a timely fashion and if you cant make his office hours he is willing to schedule a time to meet. Take this teacher over all others! He is the best by far!
LOOOOOVED this teacher. Knows his math. Best math teacher at city college. Willing to help, he really cares. Highly recommend him over all others!!
SO HARD. I took his online class, and it was the hardest thing ever. Don't take him, he is really unhelpful and the class is so difficult.
You'd best be a really motivated person to take his online class. The class is hard. He posts great powerpoint lectures and many resources, but despite what he may tell you, rarely answers e-mails, and even then takes 5-6 days to do so. The labs he assigns contribute little to your knowledge, but a great deal to your workload.
mixed feelings about gilbert. He is an amazing teacher, really has a gift. He's extremely clear and got me understanding almost everything he covered. BUT class is so boring. hes completley monotone, never smiles. no sense of humor. he gives strenuous amounts of hw. if your going for easy A this is not your guy. if yer into math n wanna learn do it
Online course. Be prepared to do A LOT of work. Stats seems intimidating, but it's just a bunch of formulas. Online course is overwhelming at first, but don't find behind & you'll be fine. Gilbert is a stickler for rules. Gave student a 0 for not stapling the lab pages together. Final exam is long, pace yourself.
I missed the 1st exam out of 4 (the easiest)in his online class. Even though I spent a ridiculous amount of time trying to get A's on the other tests, I only had a B average NOT including the 1st test. He gave me a D. In my opinion, he is one of those teachers that doesn't care about anything but exact points. Online is WAY harder than expected.
Good professor. Challenging class. Go to class & pay attention. Do all the assignments. Not an easy A but achievable if you put in the time.
I really like him but I can see why others might not. He's a fantastic teacher, really knowledgeable, but it's certainly not an easy class. If you just need to pass 150 to transfer, find someone easier. If you really care about knowing the material, he's your guy. Be prepared to work hard and take moderate to difficult tests.
Online summer course requires commitment and focus, but the work itself is not too difficult. He is a very generous grader on tests.(gives partial credit) Though the test can be hard, and you will spend a tone of time on hw and quizzes, it's not as bad as others are saying. Make sure you are not taking any other classes in the summer.
Worst professor at SBCC. Took his class online and found it almost impossible to get email responses from him. Despite his approving my proctor on the first day of class, he forgot about it and didn't send an exam to my proctor so I had to fly across country to take 1st exam on campus. 3rd exam he also failed to send! HORRIBLE professor!!
Great teacher! I've found that the people who complain about him in class tend to be the ones not trying hard/doing well. Very clear but read your book- I took his 150 & 160 b/c I liked him so much but he definitely is not as thorough in the higher classes (rightfully so).
Online class. Just awful. Ruined my high GPA. First D in my life. Hours and hours of online homework. Same from text book. Exams are extremely hard. His study guides do not help for exams. Horrible experience. Would not recommend.
It is a difficult class and my suggestion is to do the online homework over and over till you achieve 100%, print out the homework and use for open book quiz and for the labs hire a tutor. Class is NOT entirely online as advertised. You will require a proctor if not taken on campus. Subject is difficult, I have not had a lot of interaction with him
Took this class online and did decently well (B). There is a lot of online homework that is very time-consuming but it helps with the test. There are also lab assignments and exams are on-campus. Exams aren't easy, but not impossible either--you do need to study. For the on-campus exams he seemed friendly and helpful enough.
I took his online stats class and it is pretty much a teach yourself class. He does provide many PowerPoints and helpful links but you must be completely self motivated. He is also extremely helpful during his office hours so take advantage of that. Lots of homework, three labs, 4 tests and one final and he drops your lowest test score.
Such a great teacher. He is very fair and makes all the material so easy. 3 midterms, a final, and weekly quizzes that you almost always take with a partner. The hw is not always mandatory, he let's you know when he will collect it. I am usually awful at math but he made this class SO easy. I loved it!
I loved this guy! He is a really nice person and awesome teacher. He loves answering questions and knows how to explain things really well. I suggest taking the class in person. Online stats seems a lot harder. Plus you learn more in person.
The online class is hard. So, be prepared to work through every single problem. The professor has everything organized so that the class moves along consistently; building on each previous subject. Notes are used on each exam and final, to save space, I programmed the statistics formulas into the calculator. Great class and I learned a lot!
Honestly, it wasn't awful. I did it for the summer online and it was really fast paced but not impossible. I agree it should be your only class if taking it over the summer. He was fair, allowed notes, gave partial credit, etc. you get what you work for :)
I took Gilbert's Stats class online over summer. It was definitely fast-paced, but manageable. Out of 30 hw he drops the lowest 8 & out of 15 quizzes he drops the lowest 5. Very fair. Since hw/quizzes are online & basically open note, if you stay on top of your work and make good note sheets for the exams, you'll be golden. I did that & got an A.
Didn't respond to emails that I sent in regards to questions about the text. May not want to try this unless u have experience with the subject. Having a teacher assist you, and answer questions that you will deffinitly have is crucial.
David is the absolute best teacher I've ever had. I have always been a C student in math but received an A in David's Stats course. Show that you want a good grade and are willing to work very hard, and he is so accommodating and helpful. Show up and work hard! I would take this class over just to have him as a teacher again!
I have trouble with math and I passed with a B, but it was grueling. You'll need to work for it. The class is pretty well-structured and looking back, it wasn't so difficult, just that in the time you have to learn everything it can be a lot of new material, especially if you're not a great math student. I'm glad to have passed through this class!
Took him for an online math class and I had to drop out because he was such a bad teacher. He never answered his e-mails so it was basically a self teach math class. He gave us a study guide and I studied everything on it, but the test had material that we never even went over! In addition, I went to his office hours twice and he wasn't there.
Eventhough it is really hard to stay contact with him. He really a fair grader. It's not an easy A but do your homework, quizes and extra credit. He will drop some of your lowest score which is nice. Make a study group and find some math tutor. It will help you.
Obviously, my grade is a little different for Mr. Gilbert, as this was an online class. The tests are HARD, unless you are really good at math. My teacher was more the online module than Mr. Gilbert, and it was alright. It was pretty clear, and thorough.
Not the worst math prof, but wouldn't take him again. Lectures fast, is obnoxiously condescending. Assigns alot of HW from textbook; collects it randomly. Weekly quizzes are challenging if you don't get through all your HW. Tests are ok, but he throws in some fiendishly hard qu's sometimes. If no calc experience before, I recommend a diff prof.
I have never been very strong in the subject of math so I expected this class to be tough going in. However, I feel that David Gilbert did not present the material in a thorough manner. He rushes through lectures and speeds through problems. People who struggle in math probably need a teacher who is slower and more methodical.
Gilbert is a great teacher, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Be disciplined, do the homework (frequent, but not inordinately excessive) sit in front, pay attention and ask questions, and you should be fine. If you are looking for someone to "cut you a break" or "be a bro", look elsewhere. I have tons of respect for him and glad I met him.
Although an online class, exams must be taken in person either on campus or with an approved proctor, which can be difficult to arrange. He deducts points for silly things like not including every simple step and using mental math instead. Tough concepts. Almost no feedback. Rude by email.
Terrible. Aviod. You take all of your tests and homework online, and are forced to take Exams in person on campus. The exams have material different from the Hawkes Learning exercises, and he deducts points for stupid things like not including work where it wouldn't matter anywhere else. Stiff and unresponsive by email.
Professor Gilbert is not a bad teacher if you are good at math. The class is easy if you study and do the homework. There is a lot of homework assigned but he does not collect it each class. There are quizzes but most of them are group quizzes. The tests are not hard at all if you study. Get ready to pay attention and you should get an easy A
Don't take this online class. Super tough, and if you get behind, it's game over.
he does not seem to care about the slower students in the class, no clear understanding of his lecture. Lots of homework.
Professor Gilbert taught well and gave good examples in class of the lesson, but his exams were way harder than any of the quizzes or homework which were the majority of your grade. That was unfair. Class average grade before the final was 61% That is awful! He also talks condescendly to his students. Overall very hard class. Would not recommend.
David is a great professor! He clearly loves the subject, as well as teaching, and answers questions thoughtfully and clearly. He assigns homework almost every class, but he doesn't grade all of it - and he won't tell you beforehand whether he will be grading it or not. As long as you study and do the homework, you will succeed in the class.
good professor!
I took this as an online class which I would not recommend because you are essentially left teaching yourself all of the material. There are weekly online quizzes and a fair amount of homework. The tests had to be taken in person at school and I found them fairly difficult but he lets you bring half a page of notes for every test.
For the online class, he basically just assigns reading and homework from the textbook/online platform without any lecture info at all, so I cant really say a lot about his actual teaching. There are three tests worth 17% each and the final is another 20% on top of that, so if you dont study, youre out of luck. Barely passed this class.
Taking stats online is quite difficult unless you are familiar with this type of math. Prof Gilbert can seem short in his emails, then again he is simply responding to your questions without a bunch of smiley faces. I enjoyed his class and I truly believe he cares about his students and wants everyone to succeed. Take in person, not online!
Mr. Gilbert was a really great professor! I'm not a huge fan of math and I've always struggled with it but his lectures were always super easy to follow. He explains topics very clearly and helps you understand. Definitely a lot of homework, but it's usually pretty simple. I would take him again, and I recommend taking him!
I took this class online. All the homework and lectures are through an online program. He doesn't actually teach and if you have any questions, you can expect him to answer with "it's in the lesson". He kind of just oversees the course. I'd only recommend his class if math comes easy. If you need a teacher to help you lean, steer clear!!!
The best professor of my first semester. Calculus is pretty hard, and professors makes it clear that it is necessary to do a lot of work to get it. Be ready to spend couple hours after each class on a homework. There are a lot of group quizzes, they really help you to study, not to remember. It is also allowed to use graphic calculator.
I have never rated a professor before but I thought if I could rate one professor, it would be David Gilbert. He is the "It's in your book" type of professor. I am very thorough when it comes to covering materials and questions and he is no help at all. I would seriously suggest not taking him. Avoid at all costs.
Professor Gilbert... ONE OF THE WORST professors that I have ever had... There is NO zoom or class meetings. LOTS of homework. If you had questions about the material, you email him & he will email you back 4 days later OR not at all.. Tests are SOOOO hard with barely any partial credit!!! The class average for tests was around a 65% to 75%...
Took his online class after already knowing statistics from high school. If you don't already know the information this class isn't for you because he doesn't teach. I was having technical difficulties turning in my exam and turned it in within seconds of the due date and received a zero. Took my A to a C. He ignored all my emails. Has no empathy!
Dear students who want to teach yourself statistics while never hearing from your professor. You have found the perfect class! If you are the kind of student which enjoys long hours of working on a program which you go through to teach yourself everything you need to know than this class will be perfect for you. He lags to answer emails too.1/10
This class was very hard and it was difficult to get in touch with Mr.Gilbert. I was constantly trying to get ahead and it still wasn't enough. The tests and lab were pretty challenging and it was all self-taught. Mr.Gilbert does not respond to emails timely and when he did, it was very blunt and short. If you are good at math, knock yourself out.
Tests were difficult, there were some questions that we only went over once in class that were on the test, but overall not too bad. He uses your grade for the final to replace your lowest test grade which is awesome. This class definitely required a lot of effort to be put in. I definitely suggest making a study group/going to the math lab.
Terrible teacher. Starting with the lecture that has no explanations of the material, but only straight exercise examples. So one wouldn't be able to understand why are they studying this. Secondly, homework was 8% in the beginning, mid class he changed it to 12%, and then at the end after you already knew what grade you had, he changed it to 18%
this is the first math teacher I've ever had that asks test questions asking you to define mathematical terms. math has always been about remembering formulas, but he just asks for too much; it's like he wants you to get a lower grade. In a test week, expect the same amount of homework as usual, with an additional lab assignment on top of that.
Literally the worst math 'teacher' I've ever taken. All learning done is through online quizzes and homework with no direct feedback/direction from him. The most hands off teacher I've ever taken and never actually taught anything himself, only the paid online book.
This man is the worst math teacher one can possible get. He truly wants you to get a bad grade. Usually his online tests are available for four hours. On the final (double the size), he only opened it for 3 hours. Truly unnecessary. His online labs also make ZERO sense. It requires you to use Windows on a Mac computer. Absolutely Useless. Avoid!
Took this course for the summer be ready to not feel like its an actual class. Everything was on Hawkes Learning professor only put out exams and labs using SPSS with poor instructions. Also you have to buy the expensive calculator on top of buying a whole textbook just to get the code for the online Hawkes Learning.
David Gilbert is by far the worst professor I have ever. Decent lectures. Incredibly long tests, around 20-25 questions in 2 hours is incredibly unrealistic. Most professors give 10-12 with that time span. Hard grader as well, he barely gives partial credit for tests questions. Its embarrassing that SBCC has a professor like this. Stay away.
Gilbert is the teacher that never teaches. You learn more from the book than the actual class. He is a very tough grader and your grade depends on three tests and few quizzes. If you miss class, you have to hope that he puts the material on Canvas or else you are screwed. He embraces a "mid" teacher. DO NOT RECOMMEND. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. You learn more from the book them him. He gives the "idc" attitude and seems like he does not care about his students. Graded by only three tests and 5 quizzes. tutor is mandatory in order to understand this class. he assumes that you know information about the subject, but in reality, you don't. DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS CLASS
all of the reviews may have been for online. I had Gilbert in person and he was AMAZING. Probably the best math teacher I've ever had. While class can get boring, his teaching is very straight forward. You get to do quizzes with the whole class, and you get half a piece of paper to write notes on for the tests and final. He loves helping.
Love his class. Everything is straight forward in his class. Show up and pay attention and it will turn into an A. He allows a notecard on tests. He says "i dont care" and "do it how you want" to many things which allows you to not be confined to just the way solves the math problems. The way he teaches is entertaining and he has a sense on humor.
I loooved Mr. Gilbert he was so awesome I took Stats and he was able to explain everything clearly and made it straightforward. If you do the homework you'll be fine but if you dont you will not pass. He was so funny and encouraging i'd definitely recommend.
I would not recommend this teacher. It's as though he wants you to fail. He doesn't teach, doesn't respond to emails promptly. Terrible communicator. I'm surprised SBCC has not fired him He makes learning miserable. AVOID HIM AT ALL COSTS. I loved college until I encountered him.
Doesn't explain how to solve a problem besides solving examples on the board with little to no explantation. Attendance is mandatory and effects your grade. After receiving a concussion and showing up now more than five minutes late, he marked down my grade even after explaining the situation, causing me to have to withdrawal. Zero empathy.
I honestly don't know if there is a teacher on this planet worse than David Gilbert. He expects you to teach yourself everything off of an expensive paid course! On top of that, everything your exams are on, have nothing to do with the things you have been learning off that course because he makes them himself. (Terribly I might add.) Dont Do It!!!
He is a great in person teacher. He explains the concepts very thoroughly and is always offering to answer questions or spend time outside of class on subjects. His syllabus policy is very beneficial for students as well due to his willingness of dropping 10 homework grades if scored low and he could use the final to replace one of the exams
Gilbert himself was okay. I struggle with math so this class was difficult for me. Lots of homework and quizzes. There's 3 non cumulative exams and then a cumulative final exam. We also had 2 labs, a 3rd for extra credit. I recommend doing those at the math lab, otherwise it can be very confusing. Do the work and participate and you should pass.
Never miss a class. You'll never catch up and he will be no help at all. He barely will respond to emails and if you ask for help he's very inattentive. His class is very notes based with little hands on trial and error. Each test will be able to make or break your grade. Definitely not my style. Most people in my class really struggled throughout.
Prof Gilbert's class is straightforward - show up, pay attention, and you can get an A. He's hands-off but allows flexibility. unstuck ai was a lifesaver for test prep along with the textbook. Overall, a decent math class if you're self-motivated.
if you are taking this class, be ready to put the rest of your classes on the backburner. professor gilbert is not the nicest in emails, and will also not accept any kid of late work. you will be doing a LOT of reading, but his lectures are helpful and easy to follow, and his canvas has a lot of resources (like videos for each and every chapter)
I was worried about my grade and asked for help multiple times, but he only said to "keep trying." Despite never missing class, I had to drop to save my GPA. Most students dropped or failed. He ignored emails, admitting he saw mine but didn't reply. My friend, sick on exam day, got no response and was forced to take it with only half the time.
The class itself is not particularly hard, just slightly frustrating as his teaching style would be more suited towards in person. He gave us homework during spring break though, that was incredibly frustrating.
Cares for students' success. Quick response time, whether in person or replying to email. Entertaining, fun, easy lectures. Lectures are for the most important; the rest of the chapters are up to the student to study. Clear directions. Homework matters. Fun, easy personality, approachable. I bugged him with so many dumb questions, lol.
The most indifferent teacher I've ever had. Barely wants to help at office hours and doesn't care if you do well.
Easiest math class I've taken. First third is Math 150 review; new topics like integration by parts, parameterization, and series are manageable with a solid calculus foundation. Exams are light and similar to homework. Quizzes are group-based, so it's hard to do poorly. Instructor explains well and answers all questions. Highly recommended.
He was good but for my learning style not that great. You kinda have to teach yourself I would say go to the math tutors they helped a lot but also if you missed class your grade goes down.
amazing teacher
Math 117 was one of my favorite classes in all of collage, Prof. Gilbert was kind and had some awesome lectures, he was a tough grader though
One of the best teachers you know!
