This teacher is a hard grader but you learn a lot He is passionate about literature,is very animated when reading to class-made it appealing. He is lively,very funny,could be a wild man but keeps it in check-good class. Can come off macho-but suspect inside there is a tenderheart .Recommend this class highly.

This teacher is a hard grader. If you don't have time to study and write a lot of essays, I do not recommend him. He talks a lot about himself and his girlfriend. (Or his ex) His final was on the research paper. I dont remember how many pages, but it's something like 20pages. Yes, a lot!

Yes, he is a challenge. Yes, it's hard to get an A. But you'll learn much more here than the teachers who give you an easy A for writing big words in your essays. If you want just that and no work, add another teacher. He's actually really funny, interesting and somewhat self-deprecating. The ego thing seems to be a front.

If you get an A (or a B) in this class, you know you've earned it. If you want to learn how to write well enough to exceed most teachers' expectations, then take the class.

the guys not that bad,but the class was hard. you do learn a lot though. if you like a challenge and want to improve your writting take him. if not talk someone else. the one thing i liked about his class was it was entertaining, not some boring english class. he always going off subject, but usally about somthing interesting.

There is goog and bad.. 1st the GOOD: He is very helpful and willing to help outside of class. I learned alot from his class about eng and a lil about life too.. he is interesting too.. aboutthe BAD: hard grader and class takes up alot of time.. But is worth taking if you want to to good in eng 21.. its a good chalange too. he's also kinda cute ;)

i definitely recommend this teacher if you want to learn... he is brilliant and knows what he's doing. i took his 8 week class and worked hard and got an a. if you're lazy he'll get on your case, but he's a really good teacher and his class is highly amusing.

I think I'm going to put some time into this class. Hopefully I'll get a B. My suggestion, take an easy class, there is no point in taking some hard ass class.

This Professor for sure knows his stuff! I am still in his class and enjoy every moment of his lectures. Some of his assignments are difficult, but if you work hard at them, you'll get a good grade. I will be taking more classes with him in the future.

I think this professor either pays people to write good things about him here, writes good things about himself and pretends to be a former student, or both. He is absolutely the worst teacher ever!

very funny guy. really knows his stuff and is one of the best professors i'v had. behind his ****y facade he's a very good teacher and really cares that we do well in his class. however, he is a really tough grader and some of his essays are difficult. expect to get several "B"s on his papers.

He is a very bad teacher. he always pay more attention to the girls and he assinse really stupid hw. he says that he understands us because he has been throught it. then he turns around and bites you in the ass. if you have no choice then take him but if you have a choice don't take this teacher. period!

Very hard class, dont take it if you only want credit for 101. always willing to help students at office hours. very helpful. makes you work and think but it pays off in the end.

Mr. Gonzales appears to be a hard A** at first but once you get inot his class and DO the work, he is really willing to help. You need to speak up in his class, he likes people who are outspoken and will fight him. If you need help...ASK!! He is willing!! I had to work my butt off for my B, it was worth it, and I know I learned alot because of him!

The guy gives you a template for each paper. How hard can it be? This is not a difficult class if you're there to work and learn. He does have a lot of issues and can attack students with a great deal of venom. He may joke around with you, but don't joke back...he can strike without warning. He is very insecure.

While your in the class it feels difficult but when i got my essays back i was happy. he gives you a template for every essay and the final is jut a bunch of deffinitions, but be sure to memorize. overall was an interesting class. DONT miss any classes and youll be fine. i got a B.

This teacher requires a lot of effort, however, I've gained more knowledge and wisdom from his class than I have from any other professor. He spells everything out for you, but requires you to think for yourself. If you want to actually learn, and become great, Take his class.

Wow, another GREAT class with Mr. Gonzales. I got a B and believe me, it felt great. He teaches English 102 a lot differently than 101. I would take him again, if he taught 103. He is difficult and he likes having SMART discussions with students. I really like this guy!

He's young. He's a little dysfunctional. He's got schtick. Despite the entertainment factor, he's serious about critical reading, writing, and thinking. Gonzales provides the tools and structure that can take you through 2nd year university if you want it. But you must earn a good grade; give considerable thought to your essays, and participate.

He will make you work your ass off. However, if you want to get better at eng., you have to write your ass off. He does talk about his life but he'll bend over backwards to help you out if you ask him. He also gives a speech in the beginning about how much pain you'll endure in his class but really he just wants to cut down on the papers he grades.

there are times i would think he is so smart and others i wasnt too sure. you dont know when he is serious, or not. but never the less i learned SO much on writing essays and if you try very HARD, you will get an A. he talks about his life a lot, but it kind of ties into the issues in the book. a lot of work.he likes people who talk!

I can say he's not boring because of all the different things he talks about but the way he grades in just unbelievable. On papers you taught you did good, he'll give you a C or even a D, and on papers you just BSed , you'll get an A or B. I would say make your paper long because I think he gives good grades to longer paper with no sense.

Hes funny and always tries to make his classes fun. He does make his essays long but they are just like highschool essays. He explains how to do each one but if you like missing classes then dont take him

Man, there's so much essays!! One after another. Gosh, there's no break with this man. But he's so kool. He really tries to entertain his class b/c he doesn't want it to be boring. He's not helpful when you ask a question. All he's going to tell you is to look it up in your book. He wants everyone to be independent, I guess.

Mr gonzales will make you write in his class, every type of essay there is process analysis, narration,compare and contrast, and argument and persuasion, but you need to learn this to move on to eng101.Just do it.

Professor Gonzales is an awesome teacher. He truly does not trust anyone, but is willing to tell you his whole life story, which is always hilarious. He's extremely helpful and nice, but you need to show that you care and not be intimatdated by him. Just try and write with honesty and you'll do fine.

i really enjoyed his class...he likes students who are socially aware and who put social issues in their papers. Overall i learned a lot and an A is not impossible...you just have to impress him with format and concepts.

This professor spells things out for you crystal clear. He provides you with the writing format, and leaves it to you to do the work. there is no guesswork. Although there is quite a bit of writing. Professor Gonzales is also very helpful if you need help with a paper. HIGHLY reccomended

This guy here is a character. He is ****y and seems like he has a chip on his shoulder. Other than that great teacher, really nice and clear. He is an Ex-jock and you can tell.. lol.. but totally chillable. He is hard if you dont know your stuff so be prepared. Awesome teacher, recommended if you want a challenge.

I got an A in his class and I was the only one in the class who got one.It's a challenging class but if you work really hard on your essays, you can get an A.If not, you can easily get a B if you do the work and try.If you have some prior knowledge of the English language, then this class should be easy.

Life changing professor. You def come out having learned something whether you do the work or not. Exciting experience every class; got me into actually liking to read. Take if you want to learn more than english but also improve your rhetoric and writting skills. Try him and see for yourself. always there to help improve papers, ideas, etc.

somehow, Gonzales is very sexy. but, that's besides the point. if you have a social life, a job, and another class, then don't take his class. if you don't, it's all yours. it's hard. it's a lot of work. but it's probably the only class i'll miss after the semesters over.

Gonzales is BUHDASS! I took English 101 three times at pierce and dropped with a "w" or fail because the teachers were horrible. HE is the BEST. Expects a lot from his students, but he is helpful. Those that hate him, are plain stupid. You don't belong in college. He has changed the way I write for the better. Can't wait to take him in fall!

He was TOUGH. But in the end, you knew he just really wanted to help you out. He's not a bad teacher at all. In fact, I discovered skills I never had because I took his class. Most of these skills are patience, perseverance and confidence. Hahaha. Seriously, though, he might be tough, but really, he just wants you to stop using run-ons & fragments!

Gonzales is pretty demanding, but I did take a 5 week condensed class... He's very clear about what he expects, and gives you very detailed instructions of what he wants to see in your writing. If you actually want to improve your writing, I would suggest him. Not an easy A by any means, the final is ridiculously difficult. Fun and helpful class.

He tells you what he wants and what he expects of you. I admit i was afriad in the beginning but as the semester went on I got the hang of it and because of him my writting got alot better! Alot of reading, analysis and essays in this class. There is a research paper at the end of the year.

If you are not willing to put hours (and I mean hours) of work into the work that he requires, then you might as well not step into his classroom. Although his methods are quite strange, my writing has improved dramatically. He is a tough teacher, and you have to devote a lot of time to his class. Who said college was supposed to be easy?

The semester started with the classroom being completely full.(Students standing outside the door and taking notes). By the end of the semester, there were only about 18 TOPS students. All those who talk bad about this professor are probably lazy. If you are interested in actually doing something, then I would recommend him. If not, don't bother.

One of the best professors I have ever had. The class takes A LOT of effort and time but in the end, you walk away knowing how to write solidly. I took him for both 101 and 102, wish there were more classes I could take with him. Also, the books and stories used in class are super interesting!

He is a helpful professor. When he see your working hard he is willing to help. I am an esl student. I didn't speak English when I came here. Although I failed the class in first attempt,I took it with him again passed at the 2nd time. but at the end its worth. I learned to write in English. So be ready to work hard and earn your grade.

This was the best teacher I have ever had. I took him for 101 and 102. I entered his class not knowing how to write a paper and not understanding, or liking, english. I now am an english major at UCLA. If you want to learn, take him. Looking for the easy A, wrong teacher. I got A's in both his classes and every english class from that point on.

Great teacher. Keeps lectures interesting and humorous, so class seems to fly by. Fair grader and he gives you plenty of opportunities to meet with him and discuss your current essays. Not uncommon to spend 45 minutes of class on irrelevant topics,then briefly explains a 100pt project.Told a boring story about his daughter and expected us to write an exposition on a "theory of art". I definitely will NOT say he is an easy teacher. That would be a lie. He's very informative, kind of a jerk (at first), but you'll become a better writer/speaker/reader all around. I thought he was funny?

This professor has to be my favorite professor in all of pierce. He's funny, helps you out, and is extremely straight forward so excuses don't work. On the other hand probably the hardest professor I've taken. This class will kick your ass, make sure you're not taking any other difficult classes in the same semester as him.

Rarely slept during the semester I took him. Not an easy teacher, however, he will help you a lot as long as you ask for help. Be there everyday and all he really wants is a clear essay. BUT ITS hard, but what do you expect from college? Writing essays seem so much easier after I took him.

He is a really hard teacher...but, if you want to learn how to write well, then he is the best person to take. In lecture he is very mean, but outside of class he is very nice. Do not take him if you want an easy A. If you want to learn how to write then take him. Seeing him during office hours can help you get a better grade in your essays.

&102. EASY A = NO, LEARN TO WRITE = YES. I do suggest going to see him in office hours with a completed essay a couple days in advance of the deadline. This will make things easy b/c his lectures are not that direct.

Mr. Gonzales will give you knowledge if let him to. I still use the skills and understanding I learned from his class but that doesn't translate to an easy A coz he is always looking to push you and make a better paper, my topics and ideas improved, but had bad punctuation and grammar problems so I got B+ always. He may come off as a jerk but he's seriously one of the few teachers on campus that actually wants you to work for your grade and understand the material. This professor honestly does care about all of his students. All you need to do is do as he says, and ask him for help! I took his class over the summer, and I can say that I improved my writing skills by a lot. I would recommend this professor to serious students only, because he gives a lot of homework.

The man knows what he's doing and has an odd way of trying to get the student to connect but it works. He's can come off as a jerk but he becomes more comfrotable. You learn a lot! I took him twice. english 101 and 102. got C at 101, had trouble organizing my essay, got B on 102, and because of him i learned how to read then write. at csun now but I wish i could take his class again and get an A since his class was the start of my turning point as an responsible student. If you wanna have the skill to write, take his class.

Mr. Gonzales is a hard but caring teacher. If you follow his templates exactly for his essays and see him in his office hours, you will get a good grade in his class. However, he is a hard grader and you will not get an easy A in his class.

If you aren't serious about his class you will FAIL. You have to follow the EXACT directions he gives to you. He is also not afraid to drop you out of the class for anything. If you pay attention and want a challenge, he's the right teacher. He will embarrass you in front of the class and FORCE you to participate, there is no escaping this.

Very helpful teacher, and makes a caring effort to really develop and strengthen your English skills, but you have to be there and awake for it to work. he's a hard working, no bull dude, as well as being occasionally funny.

This class is pretty intense. I took it the summer, and it took up most of my time. At the beginning he seems intimidating, but like he said he tries to scare off those who are not truly interested in learning. After a few classes he is more chill and very funny. His class is definitely worth taking! Essays are very easy for me now, thanks to him!

David is hard, but rewarding. But you need to do things his way. I am taking this again, but with a better understanding I have to work. He demands you work in his class, this is not for the fainthearted.

He is no joke. I took him for Eng 102 in the summer of 2012 and he had me stressed for 6 weeks. If you do things his way and don't be a smart ass you will be ok He is very hard, you will do double the work than any other English class He comes off as a jerk but he really is a nice prof. if you don't get on his bad side. AND DO EXACTLT WHAT HE SAYS.

This Professor was a great teacher! He knows what he is talking about and if you try a little bit you will get the grade you want! He will make you earn it which is his job. Take his class and you will find yourself actually appreciating a teacher!

Gonzales is one of the best professors at Pierce. He is CRYSTAL CLEAR on what he wants, however he is UNREASONABLY DEMANDING in the amount of work he assigns, considering this is a 3-unit class. We had 2 typed essays-5+pgs, 2 in-class-5+pgs, 1 critical reading logbook(should've been 2; we got lucky), research paper-15pgs and a final. DO NOT TAKE!

Early entry here as the semester comes to an end, I'll likely end his 102 class with a high B. Hard class, he is a very demanding professor but he's reasonable. If you're lazy just drop his course dude. Gonzales will either make you or break you. This is a legitimate English course and you'll know it quickly. Great experience. Not for the dumb lol

I finished winter semester with Gonzales. There was an incredible amount of expectations, in fact I literally cried three times this semester, I was so overwhelmed. I am an aspiring writer, so this class was challenging for me. He is amazing, and helped me take in constructive criticism. I'm glad he was my professor, just be prepared to work hard!

Prof. Gonzales is wonderful. His workload is insane, but he's more than helpful. NOT an easy A by any means. Definitely a challenge, but he keeps it fun as well. If you don't like sarcastic or snarky humor, you probably will not like him.

Very difficult instructor If you are lazy or procrastinate this class is not for you harsh grader ! Smart ass but yet funny, something is due every other day ! You have 1 day to do a 5 page essay every time a new essay is assigned !

Definitely must work for your grade, but I came out a better writer in the end. He was like a comedian, his sense of humor might cross the line w some. I was intimidated by him in the beginning but realized by the end that his 'strictness' comes from pure passion & he is a master in the subject. Gives helpfuldirect feedback if you ask for it.

I took professor Gonzales for the Winter semester. A very challenging class an professor, but I developed my writing skills - that's for sure. He is HILARIOUS! Gonzales cares about the success of his students. Take him!

At first glance he can be intimidating, and you may feel the need to run or drop the class. Don't. He's very friendly and funny. He tries to work with his students to get them the best grade he can give fairly. He requires punctuality and hard work but in the end you can pass with a good grade if you just put the work in. Hardest class I've ever taken in my entire life. I took him for English 102 and he made almost made me cry due to the excessive reading. I have never worked so hard in my entire college life. His lectures were great.. Thanks to him, he helped me see life in another perspective in terms of analyzing and critical thinking . be prepared to work hard.

I have taken him for three classes:21, 28, and 101 . I loved his personality and the assignments. 101 was the hardest because there are book essays. If you can go to his office hours, go! He will gladly go over your paper with you. He's an English Genius he just expects you to be the same and its very hard to get an A. His classes take dedication.

Use his offie hours!!!!!!!! it will definitely help you. Ask him to check your paper, and don't slack off. Makes you work hard for your grade. learned so much out of his class.

If you want to learn, take him. If you can take criticism well, take him. He expects the best and only the best. It's a lot of time and effort but it's worth it. He's intimidating but he's hilarious, outspoken, and amazing. He cares about his students. If you take his class use his office hours and do not procrastinate!!!

Prof Gonzales is not for the weak of heart, or the lazy. He will make you rewrite your essay 5 times and he'll only want to see the first and last copies, but you still have to have drafts for peer revisions! If you're not serious about your education, you will not pass this class.

I really struggled in his class, I was probably the worst student in his class but he is fair and compassionate. This class will make you think critically. Please, do not think that you can pull the wool over his eyes because he does not play that and will call you out on that. Overall, this class was fun and I laughed so much and will miss it.

This was the worst college course I've taken. English is my favorite subject, and I have always received A's on papers (even when I attended a good private school). Prof. Gonzales is a strict grader, yet barely glanced at papers. He helped me improve my writing greatly, however, his knowledge of the subject is overshadowed by his rude behavior.

You actually have to go to his office hours in order to get a good grade. He only assigns 4 papers which isn't a lot. He is really depressing, so be careful about that. He is pretty personal. Overall try to ignore him and go to his office hours. Really harsh and not very well-organized. He is really not going to talk much about English as a course.

D. Gonzales is a great professor, however he will make you work, he is not someone you can give bull to. Read the text BOOKS and you follow his essay criteria and visit his office hours you will pass.

Really this class should be taken if you are an English major. This class will make you work for the A. If you do not go to his office hours you will not pass. This class is very heavy. He wants to push you to question whether or not school is for you. Not for the weak minded.

I took him over the summer. He helped me learn how to distinguish nouns,pronouns, adverbs and the meaning of them. Also I learned how to write simple,compound,compound-complex sentences to extend an essay. If you do his hw and participate in class you will be fine. Study study those flashcards.

I took Professor Gonzales for a winter course and he was GREAT! His assignments were very clear and never once was i confused. He takes his time to make sure that every student understands his lectures and he answers all questions. I am happy to say i actually learned how to become a better writer in this class and he has a great sense of humor.

He's a great professor took him for eng 28 & 101 in summer 2015' and winter 2016' he's hilarious and very inspirational his lectures are very clear you ask for help and he will help you and give more advice if needed he's an easy grader as long as your try your best. Professor Gonzales is a great teacher. I look is english 101 class in the winter, it was difficult and he makes you really work for your grade but he is honestly such a great guy. I definitely recommend him and I would retake his class again.

I happen to love this professor! I agree that he might be viewed as challenging, but he gives clear cut directions. He explains exactly how to receive an A in his class, and by following his directions I have been receiving only As and Bs in his class. There is a lot of reading.

His lectures are pretty funny and inspirational sometimes, but he often gets very off topic. The class might as well be considered a 4 unit class with him, because you will be spending quite a bit of time in his office to get papers reviewed. Sometimes he is helpful, but other times he is just rude and makes you feel uncomfortable asking for help

Most interesting and helpful English teachers I ever had in my entire school career! He never has a moment of being the generic boring English teachers that teach by the book. He relates the readings to current events and even social constructs. He goes beyond to help you do good in the class and has the material being genuinely interesting.

Gives great feedback and several opportunities to make up work. Although has bit of an aggressive tone but he does not intend to come off that way. A real cool cat and his advice for life is a real plus

Get ready to conform, for what is likely to make you better. You don't have to agree with him, just follow HIS style of writing an essay and you should pass. Some advice, do not try to override his style with your own, the class assumes you're relatively new to writing critically, and he gives you a template to follow to ensure a solid standard.

I love this Professor, but he definitely makes you work for your grade. I learned how to write such strong essays because of him. There is no reason you shouldn't pass if you go to class, ask questions, and do the assignments. I will say that he can come off as rude in class when you ask a question but he really isn't that's just his character.

Overall a great teacher to me. he was very good at explaining what I could do to improve on my essays whenever I would ask for help. He's also a very nice and welcoming teacher so don't be afraid to ask him questions. He is a hard grader and could easily give you an underwhelming essay grade if you slip, so make sure to always put your best.

Professor Gonzales is very much a no-nonsense professor. He can be abrasive and blunt, so if you have thin skin, look elsewhere. That being said, he gives detailed feedback explaining his grading, encourages classroom participation, and cares much more than he lets on. If you want to learn, take his course; if you want to skate by, look elsewhere.

take the class. he gives enough time to complete assignments and allows late work. essays were broken down into two weeks, to give you enough time to draft and revise. Only 3 essays in the semester and he gives assigments that help prep the essay. He is very helpful if you ask for help! Be precise with what you need and he will try to guide you.

To do well you should/need to work with Prof Gonzales. He is super helpful and willing to support your learning, but you must reach out. His grading is critical, but vry fair. Again, PARTICIPATE! Online class for me. Took 101 and decided to take 102 because enjoyed it so much. He's a great Prof and provides useful feedback. Workload very manageable

After reading all the reviews of Professor Gonzales, I was nervous and I started off with a fail too. He wants to see his students succeed and will give you a plethora of opportunities to get your grade up. Gonzales provides clear instructions and is very quick at responding back to you. I like professor Gonzales he takes the time to attend to those who need the help, and does a great job of breaking down the guidelines that one should follow to be a great writer. He gives a lot of discussion posts and assignments meant to be preparation for the essays you write in order for you to not struggle doing things at the last minute. He gives great feedback and advice, replies really quick to emails, and gives many extra credit opportunities.

He holds the class to a high standard, but it's a college-level course so that's fair. His office hours were generous and he's willing to schedule meetings outside of them if they don't work for your schedule. He's super accessible and willing to help with assignments. There was a ton of time for assignments and no reason not to finish on time.

I attended his in-person class in the Fall semester of 2023 and it was actually quite good.The whole semester was based off one book. We did multiple essays based on the book and then combined all in one research paper.His directions on things are very detailed so it wasn't hard to understand.

Course isnt challenging unless you choose to complicate it for yourself.

This class was quite the challenge, but with the right strategies it's manageable. Definitely use unstuckstudy AI and the free textbook - they were essential for staying on top of the workload. Overall, an intense but rewarding experience.

If you do your work in his class you'll do fine and if you qualify any assignment up to research paper you can resubmit up to an A-

This prof was a lot of fun. I think some people feel like he's tough because his feedback can be blunt, but I met with him on zoom and he was super chill. You realize right away that he really wants to help you learn.

Took his class in person (being on time matters). He seems difficult to approach but does want people to succeed. He has pretty clear directions if not just ask. Youre assigned 1 book and write 2 essays on a topic he assigns, some discussions, then for the final combining the 2 into a research paper. Overall it's manageable and you actually learn.
