great teacher
Very helpful and knows his stuff!!!!
Take notes.
Good teacher. Take good notes, do the readings, and you'll do fine on his tests.
A very good teacher. Speaks clearly in his lectures so you can take good notes. You don't need to buy the textbook, but buy the novels. I recommend taking this teacher.
A lot to read, but very much required to pass tests. Very thorough in his lectures.
This Asian Traditions class was VERY interesting. There is a lot of reading and TONS of note taking (since there is no actual textbook for the class). If you do the readings (in the novels) and take good notes, you will do fine. He has a sense of humor 2.
I swear by this site. Yes, he is an incredible professor. I hate history and I passed without a problem. The key is in the note taking. Read and you will do fine. If you aren’t sure about a history professor, Take Gordon and you might just want to ma
Took him for hist 100, and 103. 100 was alot easier, but 103 isnt as bad as the other history teachers i have had. notetaking is key and the readings, but they help your grade anyway and are easy. i would reccomend taking him.
He is great, very organized with his lecture and notes, the novels are great reads, always willing to answer questions. Take this professor if you have trouble or hate History, he will make it an enjoyable experience for you!
my absolute favorite professor. you will get as much out of his class as you are willing to put in. i take a class with him every semester.
gordon laughs at his own jokes and that's okay with me. this dude made seemingly boring stuff really interesting. loved the class. take it! take it!
I've never really liked history...but he made it interesting. He's very clear and organized with the material. The only thing that's not so great is there's a lot of material to learn. Overall...take him for any history class you can.
Makes subject matter extremely interesting. Gives essay question before test, so be sure to go over that. His notes are very well organized in an outline and all you have to do is listen and supplement the outline in your own notes.Fair to easy tests and very interesting classes.
He drives me insane. He's the most annoying man on earth, but very easy. He outlines his lectures for you so you can follow along. He made History fun and very easy to understand. His tests are easy if you go to class and prepare for the essay portion. Grades fairly.
Take his Asian Traditions class, it's really interesting. I will warn you about his fans and his habit of laughing at everything with his weezy laugh.
lmao. beware of the "Heuh" noise after every single thing he says. Oh and he drinks alot... the outlines help you tremendously.
Do it his way or fail. DONT WRITE IN PASSIVE VOICE!!!

First of all if you can get past how much of a dork he really is, the class is rather easy as long as you take detailed notes. For his class take notes and dates are a big thing especially on term ids. On his maps for the test you couldn't make it more simple. You might get tired of him laughing at what he says, but he is an easy teacher
Great professor, really knows his stuff. Easily distracted, though, but friendly and helpful. One essay, three exams and a few multiple choice take-home assignments. Be aware that this is a general studies course and non-History major students will be there to whine and yawn all through class, though.
Great teacher. Extremely knowledgeable and very passionate about his history. Covers the material well. Show up and take notes for every class and you will have no trouble at all getting an A.
He is smart and funny
Im really good at history, but struggled in this class. There is a LOT of studying and memorizing to be done. If your not good at taking notes do not take this class
Prof. Gordon is a dork, and he laughs at his own jokes a lot. Its kind of annoying, but he is a great teacher. He is helpful, and easy to understand. Ask questions, and take lotsa notes. The books you have to read are ok, but definitely STUDY for his exams. They are involved and hard. The paper is ok. Take him for a challenge in a gen-ed course.
Dr. Gordon is one of the best history professors I've had. He is extremely organized. The outlines are a tremendous help when studying. His tests challenge you, but they are fair and he's not a tough grader. Put a solid, not overwhelming, amount of work into the class and you'll get a good grade.
He is amazing and has lots of entusiasm! This was probably the most exciting class I've ever had :)
He is the most hydrated prof on campus - he drinks a gallon of water while lecturing. He has some unusual quirks, but he is clear and concise. Hardish grader - and don't plagarize, he'll know. Also, learn what passive voice is and NEVER, EVER use it, he marks off. And I gave him hotness points because he has lost some mad weight and is so cute!
AWESOME professor! He is really fun & funny to listen to. Make SURE you take notes and read the assigned readings because his lectures are his "textbook". He is really nice & understanding. Overall he is the best history professor I've had yet. I would def. recommend him to anyone. Go to class & take notes... you'll be fine. (Tests are easy)
It is hard to describe Gordon with 350 characters. The bottom line is that he is probably one of the best overall professors shepherd has to offer. He has a ton of office hours and is willing to sit down with you and help. If you have a choice between Hist 100 and 101, go with Dr. Gordon's 100.
Great professor ever! He is very easy, and he keeps you interested. This is a class where you want to ask questions. He is well organized and not hard to study for at all. He is an awesome grader and very nice!
Dr. Gordon was a blast to have.If you want a good history class that is fun with a man who knows his Asian History this is the man to take. His tests aren't too difficult and the readings in his class are different books about far east religion and culture.1 small paper. One the best history professors at Shepherd.350 characters don't do him justice!
Amazing prof. Extremely organized & easy to follow. Has forgotten more about Asia than I'll ever know. Very smart, helpful, and fun to take. Pretty easy tests, too, & just one small paper. 350 characters not enough. Will definitely take again.
GREATTTT! If you do a little bit of studying here and there its an easy A, and its all laid out for you + EASTERN CULTURE ROXX
this guy rocks my nerves and he is pretentious! I suppose he would be easier than some of the other history idiots at shepherd if you can tolerate his lameness!
So, Gordon and Hendrickson are tied for my fav History profs. Of course, Gordon is so freaking cute, so that's a plus for him. You have to come to class if you want to do well, but missing one or two won't kill you. He doesn't like cell phones in class. Good sense of humor. Not as bubbly and adorable as Anders... but a GREAT History teacher. A+
I highly enjoyed his class. Go to class, take notes, and study for at least an hour before the test and you should be good. I learned a lot from this course, I wish I had him for all my history classes. He will take points off of your participation grade if he catches you using a cell phone or any other device.
David Gordon is the best professor I've had this semester, and I would recommend him to anyone interested in Asian studies. He is concise, always answers questions, and extremely fair grader. I plan on taking him again for sure next semester, and praise him for his teaching style. Fair amount of reading, but most of it was highly enjoyable. A+
I hate history, but this class was fun. I learned a lot of stuff that i actually remember. There's a lot of reading, but its easy and fun. There's one paper, that's easy, its like two pages. The test are easy if you study. Make sure you take notes they'll come in handy. He's a funny man to watch, he drinks a lot, pulls up his pants a lot, and laugh
Good professor. There is no textbook for the course; he just assigns several small books to read. The essays on each test come from those books. There is only one paper for the entire semester. Lectures are kind of boring. But overall he is a nice guy and extremely helpful.
He makes you read a ridiculous amount of books and expects a lot for it being a 100 level class. Tests are hard, you must study a lot to pass. He expects you to memorize quotes from text to quote in your essay on a test, ridiculous. i loved history prior to his class.
I have had Dr. Gordon for more than 1 class, and I can tell you that he is both eccentric, difficult, yet rewarding. His class seperates people who like history and history majors. You really have to work, but once you do, you are prepared for anything.
Other than nitpicking on spelling and assigning book reports with 5-doublespaced page limits and then axing points for not going into enough detail/discussion, he's an excellent Prof. Fun, open to questions, and superbly organized with his lecture outlines, his classes will definitely give you an excellent overview of Asian history.
Very good professor. As long as you read all of the books, attend class, and study hard you will do good.
study and yee shall pass!!
if you dont read the books then you will pretty much fail. He grades very hard on the papers (which is stupid, he is a history teacher).
Dr. Gordon is sort of goofy but he is a great professor! He pretty much hand feeds you the notes and his tests are not tricky or difficult. He'll tell you exactly what's going to be on them and if you fail then it's your own fault. One paper for the class, I spent about an hour doing it and got a 96. It's funny to watch him lecture. Take him.
My favorite professor this year! Definitely not your average teacher, he's a real character you won't forget. You have to read a fair amount but the assignments that go with the readings are very straightforward. Read your books and study a lot and the class will be fun and easy. I've learned so much thanks to Professor Gordon.
Prof. Gordon is awesome. He's passionate about what he teaches and tries to make it interesting for everyone. The first day of class I was like what in the world is this dude doing...his water bottle is by his side at all times and he breathes funny but he is a good guy! Go to class, at least attempt to read the books and you'll pass.
The class is interesting as far as the material covered however his style of lecturing and how he tests on it vary greatly!! HARD tests
He gives you outlines so you know what you're taking notes on, but be there for the notes or you won't pass the tests. You have to read a few novels throughout the semester, too, and then there's an essay about the books on the tests.
I took him last semester. Very interesting class. Gives you outlines, however YOU MUST take lots of notes, and study that map he gives you. If a country, or city in asia is spelled completely wrong, its wrong no matter what. I thought the class was kind of hard. Then again it was an upper division class. Ended up passing though :)
Dr. Gordon is the best. His class is strictly lectures so be prepared to take detailed notes. Put effort into studying because his material on tests comes directly from what he says in class. If you want an easy, interesting, and fun history class, choose this one! Just be prepared to work and study!
Came into the class thinking I'd learn more about traditions, instead we spent the semester learning religions. Dude is crazy hard with his grading on tests and the one paper that has to be done. Needs to slow down so that students can get the notes on paper.
Cant answered detailed questions about his own discussion and grades papers harder than an english professor would. Too much information to handle and all tests have an essay question. Overall, heis a below average professor. NOT helpful at all.
Dr. Gordon is a wise teacher when it comes to Asian Traditions. He provides Outlines per weekly to coincide with his lectures. However, TAKE NOTES OF YOUR OWN. The three tests are straight forward an easy but I suggest pre-writing your essay response (Which you will know ahead of time) Great Professor very helpful and willing to meet at any time.
he is unapproachable inconsistent and is uninterested in the success of the students. you will read well over sixty pages per class. grading on papers in inconsistent. ignores your emails and gives little to no instruction in the class you have to teach youself
I took this class twice, because I had failed the first time. My grandmother is full Korean, so I figured I could learn a little more about Asia. We covered NO Korean history. Tests are difficult, he is quirky and kind of awkward, kind of rude and absolutely NO cell phone use or your grade will be lowered. Attendance is absolutely mandatory.
He is kind of a dic k and he is very full of himself. As a person I hate him and a professor I still hate him. I did not learn anything yet I felt like none of my tons of homework meant for anything since I basically failed it all.
He was always available in his office the directions were never clear and the feedback often said the work was good and few comments but then the grade was a C. He only grades on apostrophes, bibliography, and citations. The directions change in the middle of assignments and told that paper were so bad that we would have failed if graded on content
He grades inconsistently and does not care about the success of his students. If possible, DO NOT TAKE with Gordon.
Super hard grader, expects a lot out of his students
This class was brutal to say the least. You best get on his good side or he'll ignore things you say towards participation. I've never failed a paper before I took this class.
I took two classes with him (Hist. 100 and 340) in my first semester at Shepherd. I got along with him well. He was a hard grader but made me focus on my work more. Between both classes I had to read 13 books. I liked the class and the material. I would recommend him, specially his Asian history. That is were he shines the most.
Dr. Gordon's class was the best class I took all semester. He is so engaging and hilarious! I truly believe anyone who applies themselves will get a good grade. Although, I would not take this class if you don't like flashcards. Flashcards will be the best study tool to remember all the historical dates. Also, be prepared to take many notes.
Take good notes on lectures but also outside readings which turn into heavy point based essay questions for exams which you HAVE to know inside and out. Do not expect him to talk about these in class. Quizlet is a lifesaver with notes -- be prepared for A LOT of definitions (23 per exam - date, country, define, significance).
He is AMAZING! My all time favorite professor so far at Shepherd. His tests aren't that hard as long as you study for them and the content of the course is really interesting. He answers questions very well and is available outside of class. I learned so much from this class and would recommend him. Just don't use your phone in class.
Ok so here is the deal. Organization of material is logical and makes Eastern history much easier to understand. His test is standard T/F, multiple-choice and term ID, and essay. He gives you the two possible essay before the exam. Read two books, and three small articles, write one paper. Paper is not hard if you read the directions. Recommended!!
Must attend class to pass. He is extremely intelligent and understands what he is lecturing about. Buy EVERY book that is required for the course, you will need to read each one. I had 4 books to read for the semester. Attending lectures are crucial, and tests are comprised of even the smallest details he talks about in lecture. Get ready to study.
Professor Gordon gave amazing lectures! I learned so much from this class, but all of the tests he gave didn't really focus on his lectures. The tests are based off part lecture, and part book. (There was a total of 5 readings for this class) And every single reading I had a hard time understanding. There also was a lot of memorizing for the tests.
His lectures are excellent. The structure of his classes in conjunction with his outline sheets does a great job at preventing students from becoming lost. I learned a ton. However, my grade doesn't reflect what I learned. The exams are basically your only grades, and most of the points come from unrelated maps and essays about readings.
Overall pretty ok professor, if you go to class and take notes youll pass the class. Test can be hard if you dont study, but study the vocab and youll most likely get an A, but be prepared to read a lot and make plenty of flash cards
A KING!!
Very harsh grader and expects A LOT. Around 5 books to read, 1 paper, and 3 exams. He takes the material seriously and is one of those "I get paid either way" professors. Pretty boring class, especially if history isn't your thing, but attendance is important. Starts and ends class promptly and it is almost impossible to get lost during lectures.
Dr. Gordon is an excellent lecturer and knows exactly what he is talking about. Read three books, take three exams, write a five page paper and study in between and you'll do fine. He tests on the lectures and the essay question for the exam is based on the readings. The readings are interesting and he tells you what to prepare for on the exam.
Dr. Gordon was a really good professor who was very enthusiastic in his lectures and encouraged participation. Do be prepared for lots of reading though and make sure to study periodically and not last minute. The class is easy as long as you do try and study.
Not really a hard class but its harder if you don't do the readings or listen, now that I know lol. Many readings from different books. Lectures are boring and slow and we got an outline for each week which was nice. Easy to reach outside of class.
this class is pretty easy as long as you do the work. lots of reading is involved throughout the semester and the books are boring as heck. midterms/final is pretty easy as long as you study a little and do the readings.
This class had a lot of reading, but the books were weirdly interesting. Class could be slow moving at times but its surprising how much I actually learned. Tests/exams are easy as long as you study decently and the paper we did was generally simple enough. Dr. Gordon is a very nice guy and super chill with class so you'll enjoy it.
Fairly easy, there were several reading assignments and a five-page paper due at the end of the semester in addition to exams.
I enjoyed this class and it was easy with not much work. Exams were easy if you study and read the books, their was a fair bit of reading so beware if you hate reading. Only had one paper the semester and it was easy. Lectures consisted of him talking only, no powerpoints or anything so also beware of that if that isn't your style of learning.
Best professor that I have had so far. His lectures can sometimes be boring but they can also sometimes be interesting. His tests are simple if you study and the paper was easy. He is very happy to see students for office hours and is super nice and willing to answer any questions or help.
Great. A non edu professor who actually will include the books read in more than just papers and seeks to reinforce the data from them by discussion as well. He is a little weird, but a great prof.
I really enjoyed his class. One of the best classes I’ve taken at Shepherd.
Great professor! One of the best Ive had so far. Im not super into history but when Dr. Gordon gives his lectures, he makes them so fun and interesting. You can tell hes very passionate about what he teaches. Hes a very fair grader and provides the readings for you! As long as you pay attention and show up to classes, youll do well.
I took Dr. Gordon for my history credit, just like the majority of the class. He knew most of us were not interested in history but still went above and beyond to make the class enjoyable and not a bore. I loved when he would try to teach us how to write in Mandarin or would bring in props like Asian drums. His tests and paper were also not hard.
I LOVED this course. It is very text heavy, and all of his exams are on paper, so don't even think you're going to be able to cheat if you wanted to. You have to study to get a good grade and to memorize events and their time periods and dates exactly. You also have papers to write. He does grade tough, but he is so engaging and always there!
Very knowledgable, kind, and great at teaching. He cares about his students and is always willing to help. He has clear grading criteria and makes preparing for exams stress free. He sometimes offers retakes and also gives extensions if you communicate with him.
Test are hard, grading is difficult
To do well in this class, you must be ready to listen to him and write down everything he is saying. He doesn't use slides or any sort of written notes to copy from; he just speaks, and that's what you need to remember. He is very organized in the way he shares all information, which is helpful, and he also posts spoken lectures online before exams
Not very willing to help you if you need help. Not much homework to do, but not having homework didn't help me prepare enough for the tests. There are three tests, 2 midterms and one final. Five part tests- map, true/ false, multiple choice, term ID, and written Essay. All IN CLASS in your 50 minute class time.
He gives three huge tests, 2 midterms and a final. Alongside that, there is an essay that needs to be written, he himself stated that the reading given does not supply ample info for the essay. Said essay is graded like a midterm. Don't fail any midterm or your grade will drag and you won't get up. Didn't provide much help. Very lecture heavy
Dr Gordon is obviously very passionate about what he teaches, however the lectures drag and he does not go in timeline order for the civilizations so it gets very confusing very quickly. He does not provide much feedback on the exams, will usually just write "?" without giving any constructive feedback. He is v accessible outside of class though.
