Relies on the book too much and goes WAY TOO FAST, without caring how lost students are, but, he explains chemistry better than anyone.
Very clear, Does not rely on book because he knows much more than the book does and knows how to explain it correctly and clearly. Excellent instructor, would definitely reccommend Tests are tough, but are worth the learning. The curve is also very fair
Always willing to help and explain. Takes the time to go back and clarify any confusion or reinforce any old material. Extremely knowledgeable of the material he is teaching. Tests and quizzes are very difficult, never multiple choice. Not an easy A.

he's awesome
Best Chemistry Instructor ever had. Explain chemistry well and clear. Not a easy A though, but learn a lot.
the best teacher i have ever had in my life!!! he is cool and smart. if you want to learn real chemistry and remember your stuff all your life, this is the best teacher to get...but he is not easy.
Best chem teacher i've had: very knowledgeble, helpfull, and approachable. an amazingly interesting person as well.
lazy teacher
he's just awesome..pretty tough, but awesome...
Great guy, super smart, passionate about the subject matter, and a pleasure to listen to. He's world-class. Take him if you can.
the best education so far with the worst grade i have ever recieved in school. but none the less an amazing journey with a brilliant, smart, and thoughtful guide.
i always hated chemistry, teacher is okay i guess because there's no homework, tests are easier than quizzes, easy to bs on lab reports and that's about it. highly recommended
very intelligent man, however he is either very busy or lazy.... consistently late to class, takes forever to grade and give back stuff. tests are usually short answer (not multiple choice). labs are laid back. one of the best chem teachers i've had.
very knowledgeable about the subject matter, very passionate about his teacher, very enthusiastic everyday, very fair in his grading, there is no better chemistry teacher than dr.gray, you will learn so much from this man
He's a cool teacher. You'll learn a lot from him and be able to stick all those nasty chem stuff in your head. Just listen and class, get what Gray's talking about and you should do okay on his quizzes and tests. Great chem teacher!! =D
HE IS THE DEFINITION of the best TEACHER. He sets high standards 4 himself and u. He will help you MASTER OCHEM EVEN IF ITS THE TOUGHEST SUBJECT. HE IS TRULY BRILLIANT. you have to work hard to earn a good grade, but it is nothing unfair he tests you in.
I learnt so much from him. He is very well rounded in pretty much everything. If u do not understand something, he will not move on until u completely understand it. His exams and grading is extremely fair. he will test u in only what he has taught you.
Taking him = suicide. Tough exam. Doesn't know how to teach! He may offer u a little help if you dont drop the class. But...not dropping the class would just make u end up with D
He pretends he has fun, which he isnt at all. Make stupid joke. Then there comes the very hard exams. He would just tease u if you end up with C or below. Screw him. He makes me hate chemistry!
I personally think he's a nice guy to hang out with. However, if you want to have a better transcript, better not to take him...
He's a fun person. Makes a lot of jokes during class time. Some people may enjoy his jokes, some may not. I'm the one who likes his joke though. But his exam is a joke too! Are the exam designed for grad students!?
Worst teacher ever exists in this planet. His exam are very very very hard!!!!!! AH!!!!
I would say he's the toughest instructor in the world. What can i say!? I get a D
He thinks his students are from Caltech. Picky in lab.
I can't understand how can a human beings can stand for him. He's extremely picky in lab. Exams are really really tough...
Nice, cool teacher. He's pretty easy with the Chem 50 lab. He's really good about helping you light your Bunsen Burner.
He is really great! I dont understand how others rate him but the only thing I can say, he is too wonderful to be chosen. His exam is hard but if you attend the lecture and study the notes, believe me you won't regret!!
Nice, fun teacher who actually makes everything seem easy. I don't know what everyone here is complaining about. When you go up to chem 1b you have to study your === off to get a good grade. This is not chem 10 anymore. He explains and grades good.(curve
boring, talks a lot & in a monotone voice, not fun or creative, hard to get A's on exam!
!!!!!BLAH BLAH BLAH, THE BEST CHEM TEACHER IN DE ANZA, WANNA ENJOY CHEMISTRY, TAKE HIM.<<RECOMMANDED>> AND PLEASE DON'T READ BUNCH OF B.S. THAT PEOPLE WROTE HERE, ENJOY IT!!!!!!!!!!!
I love the way he teaches and explains, but I hate him because he favors some students over others. Discriminator!
he knows his material very well, but he teaches his students as if they have just finished graduate level chemistry. tests and quizzes are unbelievably difficult. take him if you are experienced in chem, otherwise, stay away from him.
Mr. Gray is one of the best science teachers I have ever had! He gives clear notes/lectures, helps you understand, and has an uplifting approach to a hard subject. 4 essay exams, 4 quizes, 1 final.
mr. gray is off the chain! very clear, well organized and easy to understand. He is also hella funny. One of my favorite teachers ever.
He's hell of difficult. dont buy him at all if u wanna get a high grade.
A fun professor that looks like a surfer and has a charming southern accent :D! He's intelligent and clear with lectures and labs and what's needed for the course. He's fair and usually gives students extra time to finish projects.
concepts, concepts, concepts. that's the only thing you hear him say. if you enjoy definitions and concepts ONLY, then take him, otherwise it gets boring. CONCEPTS!!
This guy enjoys o-chem. If you get the chance, please take him for this subject. A lot of what he teaches is on the Chem GRE. In fact, he has a clue as to what is neccessary to understand before you transfer.
One cool and smart hippie....has an in-depth knowledge of chemistry....managed to get me interested in quantum mechanics.....
I think he's cool and overall a great kind of a teacher and knows his stuff. Donw worry about what those ****s's wrote down or up there.****.
He is very, very easy...no prob getting an A or B in class. Sometimes you don't have to read the book. He's willing to go over things again. He is hella hot.
In fact I took him for 1A and 1B too. Good teacher and a very active teacher. He's always finding new ways to make students understand what he is talking by using visual techniques. Recommend this hot teacher to everyone to take 'n the future.
hard tests, but he is BY FAR the BEST teacher alive--there is not enough good things to say about him; you cannot find a better teacher--or a cooler one!!!
****en teacher with the ability to talk about nonsense concepts. dont' care about labs and make u turn them in.
he kicks you as. a teacher that is not dedicated to chemistry but just jokes around and talk to people meanwhile grading exams. when you ask him a question about your exams he can't give you a precise answer. just ramble whatever he thought you didn't
The best chemistry teacher at De Anza. Uses excellent examples to help you understand an otherwise confusing course. Is funny, energetic, and youthful. Cons: lacks punctuality on quizzes. Tests exactly on what he says. Comes highly recommended!
You can't go wrong with Dr. Gray. He's the king of chill, extremely knowledgeable, and the best chem teacher you will ever have. He has creative and engaging ways of explaining the material, and if you go to his lectures you WILL learn a whole lot. Too bad I can't take his o-chem class... =/
Dr. Gray is one cool guy. Dr. Gray's Chemistry class is one awesome experience. you learn alot, he makes you want to study the material, and he teaches it well. He makes it fun to learn.
Hahah, I bet all the negative posts about Gray are from one specific person who is very outspoken (annoying) and has a grudge against most teachers' classes she doesn't do well in (not to mention any names) ... Gray is an awesome teacher, take him if you get the chance.
real nice person. he seems real busy, tho. like i had questions but he was not in his office and i asked him questions from the text and he kinda did not know the math real well. i had fun in his class, but i don't think i learned much. got a good grade i am not sure i earned.
This guy is pretty cool. He is down to earth. He goes more for concept then anything, just pay attention to his lectures and you will be fine...
i had him for three quarters and as a person i LOVE him. he is soo chill and if your guess is he takes a couple hits before class you would be right on, but he went to berkeley so what surprise is that? hes hot and just fun to chill with during office hours. unfortunately, hes way too easy though
Take him for GChem, don't take him for OChem. He doesn't organize stuff really well.
The good things to take him are: 1.his tests are from the lecture notes. 2. He knows a lot and teaches so well. 3. He is hot and fun.The bad thing to take him is no extra credit given through out the quarter. However, he may curve the class depends on the performance

He is very hard and unclear
Very clear and time efficient with lectures. Great substitute. Dr Muzzi made a good choice on substitute!
I hate chem but I LOVE DAVE! Clear, meticulous, quiz/test material predictable, no tricks. Helpful in office hours. He's accessible and aproachable. Exceptional professor! Exceptional person! And HOT! What more can you ask for? Take Dave for Chem if you're lucky enough to get into his class.
Dr. Gray class isn't easy but he isn't that hard either. He explain the concept well and is always there willing to help. You got to study his notes and the book to earn an A in his class. No suprises, he'll test you on his lecture note and the assign book work. Overall, he is a great insturctor who teach mostly chemistry concept.
Dr. Gray explains clearly in his lecture. Tests will be hard if you only have 1/2 of the understanding. Helpful ALL the time, provide help on office hr + aim. Lectures will be posted as mp3s on his website for review. Moreover, he is HOT!!
most awesome chemistry techer ever
Had him in the past yr. He's easy in the beginning but around midterm, literally HALF the class is gone due to poor grades! Easy at first, but then gets tricky, DO NO be fooled! Helpful..
People quit your b*tching, if you payed attention to lecture, read the assigned reading, and actually studied, you would have got at least a B.I struggled through chem50 but dr dave made 1A interesting(getting A's so far). FACTS: uses AIM, lectures available online in mp3, tests are given from lec notes.I would take him again for chem 1B.A+++teach
Now u all know how gud Dr. Gray is now rite. So y u'all complainin. If u put in the effort, u reap the reward. Dats d way d game is played. So stop player hatin u'all.Read his notes(its on mp3),go 2 class and please read ur txtbook and u'll do fine. Its not an easy class, neither is it a hard class.I shld know, I hardly ever read but I got a B.
He's alright. Not great, not the worst at DeAnza College. Muzzi and Fisher are better, though, if you want to be challenged and really want to nail the chemistry concepts cold.
Awesome Chemistry teacher. He knows his****. Very helpful and nice. He is kind of a softy. I had him for lab and another teacher for lecture and I learned more in his lab class than I did in lecture. He is VERY helpful. Too bad he would be teaching for a while :(
It's easy to get A in his class. He's very clear in lecture and so easy on giving test.No one can say that his tests are hard. Just pay attention on the lecture and a little bit studying you'll get an A.It's just 87% for an A so it's way too much easy compare to other instructor.Very understanding and know his stuff.
Dr. Gray is an excellent instructor because he knows his material well (he doesn't use notes when lecturing!) and communicates them to the class exceptionally clear.Test wise,I wouldn't say it is the easiest, but everything is covered in lecture, so if you study off the notes & read some, you'll be fine. Take him, he really cares about the class.
prof Gray is very knowledgeable and his lectures is very clear. MUST take teacher!
He is nice, and this class is easy A.
If you want to get an A, all you have to do is read the textbook and study lecture notes. He asks a lot of "why?" questions on exams that are not explicit in lecture. But if you read the textbook, (which i did not) you should be fine. Looking over his old tests is also a really good idea (which I did not do either, but wish I had).
Extremely good teacher. He is the type of teacher every student would love to have. If you attend his lectures regularly, you learn all the concepts in the class itself. He makes the course material so easy to understand. Labs were great too. A very student friendly teacher. Exams are not hard if you study well. I did and am expecting an A.
I have yet find a single flaw in his teaching. He's a good lecturer, give students great visual, even record his lecture so student could go home and listen to it again and again. I just really really really really really wish he would teach chem 1b. like REALLY
His lab-lecture is clear, concrete and very easy to understand! Lab exams are easy. He is a nice guy who smiles a lot to students. He won't give you pressure so that you will find yourself very comfortable and relax in the class. Easy A.
Very good instructor. His lectures are very clear and he is very knowledgeable. Highly recommended for people that need a Chemistry background for their major. Exams are not too bad, just take notes and study. Lab is fairly easy. Not a breeze-through class, but you will come out with a great understand of the topics in class.
Extremely helpful professor! He lectures with passion for the subject, which helps keep you awake! He also gives you a lot of hint on what's going to be on the tests and quizzes, so passing won't be a challenge! Highly recommended.
take him if you have a chance.I hope he will teach Chem 1B this quarter.
Dr. Grey is an awesome teacher! He records his lectures so you can always go back and listen to them. His exams/quizzes are tough but this class definitely prepares you for Chem 1A. He's always open to questions and is always available during his office hours. Study and do practice problems and you'll do fine.
dr.gray is soooo helpful! i love his class..his lectures are sooo clear and he records his lectures for you! geez, what other teacher does that?! he always takes the non-english speaker into consideration. hes really nice and funny. love his class! i really want to take another chem class with hiM!
He is very nice and extremely helpful. He is a great teacher.
If you wanna get ALL good Chemistry knowledges... Dr.Gray is your best choice. And if you're the lazy asses, stay out of it.
He is an excellent instructor in Chemistry. I have learned a lot from him about Chemistry. His test is quite hard because u have to understand well his lecture. But u can listen to his recorded lectures over and over again. It really helps that way. I highly recommend Dr. Gray to all De Anza student who love Chemistry.
His tests are pretty damn hard. Make sure you study his LECTURE NOTES. The book gets a bit dumber with every edition, he said so himself. He is all about theory so you will learn a ton. Plus if you miss a class, he records lecture and takes pictures of the notes, so he's the ideal teacher. I recommend G. Marc Loudon's Organic Chemistry 3rd ed text.
Had him previous in 1C, had him in 12A, 12B, and now 12C. He's an awesome teacher, very clear and super nice. He wants u to learn. His exam are all based from lecture. If you study, like really study, it's not hard to ace his class.
Dr. Gray is the best chemistry professor at deanza period. He records lectures, takes pictures, never goes off subject, always completes his lectures, never puts anything on exams he has not covered, always in office hours or in lab to help.. the list goes on and on. This class is no piece of cake, but if you put your time in, it will pay off.
General Chemistry or Organic Chemistry, he has to be my favorite teacher at De Anza. He tries to be clear as possible, he wants you to learn, but also spoon feeds you the material. Don't forget to study. The hardest thing he'll test you on is synthesis problems, but you have to practice and really understand it to make it through.
Dr Gray is a great teacher. Everything is pretty clear and the tests aren't really that difficult, they're pretty much straight from lecture notes. EVERYTHING is posted online, including recordings of the lectures, so you don't ever even need to show up to lecture except for tests. Everything is organized from the beginning. Take Dr. Gray
Dr. Gray he is rally good teacher. by this i mean he wants you to learn the matrial and he is diffrent type than all teachers. He records his leactures and scan his notes. As for his tests he has alot of "why" questions. All the test and quiz material are from his leacture. But you have to study hella uim mean hella alot to get an A
very good teacher...explains well, record his lecture and saves the picture and put it on his website for us to download, give review before exam...if i study harder, i think i would get an A....
He is an awesome teacher. He is helpful and nice. he wants us to study. His tests are very hard. Remember to study the notes, and understand clearly all the material because he always ask student to explain and discuss something in the exams.
Gray is an awsome teacher. he is a teacher that wants his students to pass. he also records his lec. and put his notes online. As for his tests if u understend the material clearly than it's doable.
He's a great teacher, very clear and explains questions well. goes fast enough so people that understand not get bored but slow enough for slower students. the main lecture exam isnt too tough as he puts whats on it a o getweek before the test.BUT beware the lab, it isnt just for fooling around, the lab quizzes are HARD if you didnt study, take him
the best chem teacher...no doubt
my favorite chem teacher at deanza so far!! very clear lectures, easy to follow. doesn't talk boring, monotone, doesnt put you to sleep. test based off all lecture notes. only chem class where i can still actually remember everything i learned!! and he posts recorded lecture notes and audio clips which are really helpful
I heard that concepts are really important for Dr.Gray but his is not really going deep enough to make that understanding for people.
He Doesn't waist your time with worthless things. gives you reasonable time for exams, identical questions to lecture notes. He tries to be really understanding.
He is extremley straing but in an interesting way. Take him if you care about concepts, but if you are not a conceptual person, Gray won't be your smart choice.
Great Teacher. He is very dedicated to his teachings. He will make your Chemistry experience valuable.
Amazing!! I can't say enough about professor gray, i love him! One of the Best teachers i've ever had. He made me enjoy chemistry, and I really dislike this subject! Very Helpful and such a dedicated professor!! :)
He's a great professor. You can tell he cares. He reaches out a lot and is very approachable. Best Chem teacher, for sure!
best teacher ever! actually cares about his students and gives out really nice and clear notes.
He's an amazing professor, I've taken him 2 times, i love professor gray, hes helpful and such a great teacher. very passionate!! :D
Professor Gray changed the way I feel about learning science. His straight forward, down to earth style helped me gain confidence as a student. Thank you for everything professor!
His lectures were organized and the tests were extremely fair. Dr. Gray is an amazing professor and a decent human being. Attend every lecture and form study groups to get the most out of the class. Practice a little bit every day. Ochem is one of the most valuable and most memorable classes you will ever take and De Anza.
Dr.Gray is awesome teacher at De Anza. Super clear on the lecture and make subject more interesting. He is really helpful if you ask question. Some ppl said his class is just memorizing and easy but it is NOT TRUE. if you only memorize, you will not pass the class. Understand the concept, practice problems and ask questions. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED <3<3
He is the best teacher I've ever had. Always help students and really want them to do well. not just memorizing but also learned something. he made such a hard subject fun to learn! Thank you Dr. Gray!
HE IS THE BEST!
WONDERFUL TEACHER!!! CAN NOT EXPLAIN HOW FANTASTIC CHEM 12A IS FOR ME!
Excellent instructor, extraordinarily clear in communicating both the lesson and the background theory. Posts lectures and notes online, heavily emphasizes material he plans to test to eliminate surprises, runs a more relaxed lab section reduced emphasis on lab reports. Quizzes and exams can be brutal if you're not well studied in synthesis.
An amazing instructor. First of all, he made a 7:30 AM class enjoyable, which is a feat in itself. Very articulate and clear teaching style. Helpful lecture notes that he also posts online along with audio. He provides all the resources you need to get an A. Just put the work in by studying often, reading the book, and practicing problems.
Words cannot describe how much of an amazing teacher Dr. Gray is. After taking him for the entire ochem sequence, I can safely say that without a doubt he is the best teacher that i've ever had in my life! There's a reason why his sections fill up the fastest during registration; he's that good. If he's teaching, take him and you won't regret it!!!
I used to hate Chemistry before taking Organic Chemistry with Dr. Gray. He is absolutely helpful, generous, and intelligent chemistry instructor. I barely opened the textbook to read and understand the material because Dr. Gray's notes are rich, and easy to comprehend. I will never forget him and my lovely classmates.
Easy class with clear lectures and easy quizzes and exams. Sometimes some questions in the exam are a bit challenging but overall they are easy.
Easily the best chemistry professor De anza has to offer. It's obvious that Gray is passionate about what he does and he cares about his students. His lectures are clear, and he records and posts all his lecture notes on his website. Always available for office hours. Makes class fun. And in conclusion, you won't regret taking him.
Mechanisms learned from Dr. Gray are very helpful
Dr. Gray is the most caring professor I have ever had. He is by far the best chemistry professor at de anza. His exams are basically what he went over in lecture. No multiple choice, but he is an easy grader. He understands that chem is not your only class, so he tries to make it as simple as possible. Take him. You will not regret it.
Best prof at De Anza, hands down. Know everything he writes down, and you should be good. Very clear with what information he wants you to know. He may look like a giant goofball, but that's because he is! He made Ochem fun(ish), and he is very passionate about the subject. Also, if he feels an exam was noticeably hard, he'll curve to some extent.
Best best best science professor here. He grades super leniently and his tests aren't even hard to begin with (all answers come from his notes). His lab is very laid back, lab exams are practically free points. You can see why his class fills up almost instantly. Prof. Gray, if you ever read this, thank you so much for the great class!!
I took Chem 1B with him and he rocks. Although he had jury duty and was out for a month it was sort of an incentive to pick up the textbook more often. His tests and quizzes are all theoretical or mostly that. Being mostly theory does not make the class easy, you still have to study so no surprise there. I would highly recommend him!!!
basically take note and remember it
Dr. Gray is one of the best chemistry professors I have ever taken! His lectures are clear and easy to understand. If you need help he is more than happy to help you. For exams and lectures make sure you study his lecture notes well. I highly recommend him you will not regret taking any of his classes!
ALL written exams, so his grading is all based on his judgement. Not a really clear grading criteria. Take good notes in class bc all he lectures about will be on the exam. He scans & records his lectures for you too! Very cool & helpful when studying. A bit intimidating & not the type to round your grade up. No extra credit offered.
Ok so to be honest. Dr. Gray is a pretty easy teacher since all his quizzes and exams are come from his notes. Just study the notes, read the book for more explanations and listen to his records again. If you want to be challenged, then take Dr. Woodbury. But Dr. Gray is still the best because his lectures are clear and easy to follow. I love him.
Gray is funny, knowledgable, fair, and is always understanding. He gets frustrated when we don't read the book, but his exams/quizzes are basically his well-written notes. His exams/quizzes are doable if you study everything he tells you to (which is usually a buttload of material). He wants everyone to succeed and will do everything to help you.
Such a sweet and respectful teacher, he really puts in his time and effort into making sure our class understood everything. I wish I could take him for the rest of my chem classes at De Anza, he really knows what he is teaching and makes sure all of his students succeed. His lectures are really useful and easy to follow, and labs are enjoyable.
Professor Gray is a nice teacher. You will get an easy A in his class if you take good notes and study exactly what he teaches. He always tries his best to help his student to understand the lecture. Recommend take his class.
Very hard class . Ruin my GPA
Horrible professor. Tests are hard. Memorize useless mechanism. Learn nothing from his class.
Ruin my GPA. Regret to take his class.
HUMANE Delays exam dates to give us more time to study. Sometimes, a day off (or two) from lecture. HONEST Tells us what to expect for the real world/future. Finding a job took luck. And O. Chem. is where people change majors. HELPFUL Encourages us to read text, to visit office hours, & to participate. Posts audio recorded lectures/notes online.
Ruin my GPA. It is very hard to understand his lectures. Tough grader.
Clear, dedicated, detailed, devoted, helpful, honest, insightful, kind, organized, professional, thorough, and understanding: these are some of the words I would use to describe Dr. Gray. Thank you for a wonderful quarter!
Tough grader. He forces students to memorize everything
He is ridiculous. Tests are tough. Final is impossible to finish within 2 hours.
Not a class you can take with a Harry Potter reading level, lol. Thank you, Dr. Gray. You're saving lives. I don't want my pharmacist, nurse, or medical assistant to pass with poor sig. figs... or a Harry Potter reading level, lol. Weed 'ém out!
He is a tough grader. Do not take him. Ruin my GPA.
"Nothing worth having comes easy." I really appreciated the fact that I had to EARN my grades because I know the MCAT is going to be much harder. Dr. Gray is gives very clear and thorough lectures. And the waitlist speaks for itself.
"Nothing worth having comes easy." I really appreciated the fact that I had to EARN my grades because I know the MCAT is going to be much harder. Dr. Gray gives clear and thorough lectures. And the waitlist speaks for itself.
Dr. Gray is a good professor given De Anza's bad rep for their Science Dept. He works with you if you show effort. He is a perfectionist and to a certain degree, expects you to be one too. You learn a lot but it'll cost you. His intellect can be intimating but he is not arrogant about it & he is always willing to help and work with you.
Dr. Gray is very fair when it comes to the material he tests you on. He tells you what will be on the quiz/exam the class before you take it. And whatever he lists is what actually shows up. His lectures are very good and help you understand the material. However, he gives very little to no partial credit on exams so grading can sometimes be tough
You have to work for it, study, memorize and understanding things. It's not an easy A class, but easy A science class. If you're an international students and have such minimum knowledge 'bout Chemistry like me, you'd do fine if you spend at least 5 hours to study before a test. Taking note is necessary since it makes you focus in class.
GOD of chemistry, the most compassionate science professor I've ever had. The class requires a lot of studying but everything on his tests can be found directly in the notes. I wish I could take him for every chemistry class.
Dr. Gray used to be a legend in the chemistry department at De Anza. Lately, I think he has not been living up to this reputation. His lecture notes are scrambled and he cancels class too often and does not show up to office hours. If youre a student who likes organization and accessibility outside of class, steer clear of Dr. Gray.
Took the class the first time Dr. Gray taught it. In the beginning, he didn't seem very accessible or kind tbh, but as time passed, it was apparent that this wasn't true. He's kind and lectures are easy to understand- but be ready to put in the work to get a good grade. He is clear on what will be on the exam/quizzes and enjoys answering questions.
All of his tests are based on his lectures. The good thing is that he records his lectures and posts his notes online so as long as you memorize everything he says then you will get an A. Dr. Gray is an amazing professor and I would take him again. His grading may be rough, but the tests are fair.
Probably the best OCHEM professor available at De Anza. Although the material seems difficult, you should be able to pass, if not excel, if you take good notes. The quizzes/tests are 95% comprised of lecture notes, but refer to book for additional studying as well. I love David, hes a hunk.
do yourself a favor and take as much as classes you can take, with Dr. Gray. Ive been in de Anza for good 4 years and he is the best science prof. that I ever had.
He's a good teacher. Lectures are long and tests are hard, but if you study(!) you should be fine. It's not an easy class but definitely possible to get an A, I recommend him. No homework. We didn't use the textbook much but it's helpful to study from, he posts all of his lecture notes & lecture recordings online. I'm pretty sure he curves grades.
Gray is the best chem prof at de anza. His exams are completely based on his lectures and if you fail them, that's your fault. Seems intimidating at first, but he's super chill and can go off on tangents for a while. Lab reports aren't a thing in his class and you probably won't learn to use the NMR machine. Most Valuable Boomer. WOOOOOOOOW
Gonna miss this boomer. I learned a lot from him and he's one of the best chem instructors at De Anza. "Chemist by day, Rockstar by night". MVB in the chat.
Im glad that I took his class over this summer, he was very helpful and understanding, and also very clear in what to expect in quizzed and exams.
Professor Gray is a real gem. He's so kind and nice, easy going, chill. He's lenient when it comes to quizzes and exams. He gave us a day or two to finish the quizzes/exams. I feel like if you really want to know the materials well, then you kinda have to self-teach a little bit. The best choice during this tough time. TAKE HIM AT ALL COST.
His class was really enjoyable thanks to his personality and allowing us 24-48 hours for exams. His lecture notes are pretty good, and lab reports were not terribly difficult.
Nice guy. HORRIBLE time management. 2 Classes and a Lab were cancelled. Quarter ended with only 2 assignments graded. Things were not done being graded until 2 weeks into next quarter - too late to get a letter grade. If you want a teacher who gives quick feedback and gives quick grades, look elsewhere. Great person, just kept dropping the ball.
Honestly, as a professor, he isn't bad. His lectures are very in-depth and he answers a lot of questions in class. BUT the quarter is ending in two weeks and there's only one assignment graded. He continuously postponed quizzes and exams so now the last three weeks of the quarter are exams every Thursday.
If you have any decent study habits this will be the easiest A+ you get in a STEM course. You won't know what your grade will be during the quarter but his quizzes and exams are super reasonable and aren't meant to throw off students. Interesting guy, but was frustrating to deal with which is understandable because of the pandemic.
He's a pretty easy teacher to take during the pandemic. He allows 24-48 hours for quizzes/exams and his lectures and notes are easy to follow. The bad thing about him is that it's hard to reach him outside of class and he doesn't grade things on time. It is literally after finals and we're still waiting on our first exams to be graded
Gray will make a lot of chemistry puns. He is insightful on the college admin. There will be times where he is behind grading. Read the textbook, but generally, the exams were open notes.
Real nice guy, a solid choice for a chem class. There's definitely a lot of work to be done but he'll help out anytime you ask. Use office hours to your advantage, he's super helpful!
Dr. Gray is a kind and funny professor, but a slow grader and doesn’t really respond to messages. His exams and quizzes are straight from his lectures, but there were some inconsistencies on grading. CHEM 25 is pretty easy, and lectures are optional, but the way this class is set up, you aren’t able to see your grades until they’re finalized.
The best professor ever. There are 3 exams, 1 lab report, 1 lab exam, and 1 final. The only thing that I don't like is that he keeps delaying grading stuff. Anyways, taking his class is the best choice.
Summer '22. Chem can be a bit difficult, but he's not! Exams are free-response. Questions relate to topics covered in lecture/lab. He uploads his notes and audios of lectures (not right away tho, may take a few days) He is open to questions. You'll be fine if u don't fall behind! I did during finals week, caused my grade to plummet. You got this!
This is the first quarter back from the pandemic & if you are that kind of student that doesn't do well with written tests and no open notes.. run for the hills. He does not believe in multiple choices and no study guides. He expects you to memorize so much material in such and if you are not specific enough during the tests you lose points.
very interesting person and very knowledgeable about ochem. organic chemistry is about the hardest course you'll take as an undergrad so please expect to do a LOT of reading. exams are difficult; memorize the lecture notes,, lab reports don't happen LOL also doesn't ever update grades. this course is very hard but its to be expected, its ochem duh
made a breaking bad reference in class very based professor
expected the class to be more work but so far he's missed class from sickness & cancelled several labs + a quiz...moved an irl quiz online too. all circumstantial but he's also made every quiz/exam open note, which I take it is not his usual way to teach his in person classes. hw's optional except 4 some lab exercises, study lots for exam/quizzes.
Professor Gray is a pretty entertaining person. However, for his class, there is no homework. Your whole grade depends on lab exercises, a lab report, quizzes, tests, and a very long final. Be prepared to study plenty on your own. He goes through everything pretty fast during lecture. Difficult class, and he grades very slowly. Would not recommend.
Dr. Gray is an amazing professor. I'm not going to say his class was "easy" but it's definitely a fair class - if you do the work, you'll be well. His lectures can be boring but I highly recommend attending them in-person (get to know him, he's genuinely kind, caring, and entertaining). Exams/quizzes are basically copy/paste from his lectures.
Compared to my high school chem teacher, Dr. Gray was an angel. His lectures were engaging and the tests/quizzes were based EXACTLY on the lectures, which made studying so straightforward. I really wish he was teaching Chem 1B next quarter, that's how good of a professor he is. He didn't teach my lab section, so I can't comment on that. Take him FS
the kindest professor i have had so far! super friendly and easygoing, so i felt comfortable asking lots of questions. he always makes sure that things are fair between his grading and the tests, so even though grade is literally 100% quizzes and tests, it's super manageable. ps he records his lectures, but it's more helpful in person.
Probably my favorite professor I've taken so far. The course may be hard, but that's because Organic Chemistry is just hard in general, but Dr. Gray gives you all the resources you need to get an A, provided you put in the time and effort to study the notes and read the textbook. The class was well organized and his lectures great to follow/listen.
I do like the test formats being written response and not MCQ, but I did not like his lecture style. It felt muddy and unclear, plus he drifted off topic a little too much. He was still easy for a chem professor though, giving leeway and prioritizing students. Other chemistry professors in the department have clearer lecture styles.
Dr. Gray is the GOAT. He is a kind human being with super funny stories. I enjoy his lecturing style. 12A -- Difficult at first, but manageable near the end. 12B -- Hardest one, pattern recognition is key. 12C -- Hard at first, but easier as carbohydrates come along. He will help you during office hours. 100/10 professor, Awesome guy.
Took him over the summer and it was very manageable. He is funny, interesting, and a good lecturer. He can be a little disorganized at times but it will not impact your ability to succeed. He is very knowledgable about chemistry and makes class enjoyable. Highly recommend
Professor Gray's CHEM25 class is challenging but manageable. He's a funny guy and makes good chemistry puns, but can be a slow grader. Use unstuck ai and the textbook to supplement the lectures, which can be unclear at times. Overall, a solid chemistry class.
Professor Gray gives very detailed explanations, so the lectures are really helpful. The lab work is not heavy because he spends time lecturing. Exams relate to all lectures, so just review all slides for the quizzes and exams.
He's a nice professor and everything, and his tests are fairly straightforward but he is so disorganized, his formatting for the labs along with his class schedules and canvas are honestly a mess. His teaching style may work for others but it was hard to follow along for me, you definitely have to study a lot on your own.
He doesn't really teach, He will do lectures and then will not give you homework or study guides for anything. You're basically on your own and you barely know what if on the exam. He's a good person but I wouldn't reccomend taking him as a teacher if you want to learn anything
Dr Gray had a tough time this quarter due to family emergency so the course was quite disorganized. Even with everything going on, his lectures were accurate to the exams. All Canvas material were uploaded late, but I'm not going to gut his rating b/c I know he did his best despite his circumstances. It's easy to tell he cares about his students.
Despite the circumstances he was in early in the quarter, Dr. Gray still did everything he could to teach us all the content we needed. 5 exams throughout the quarter and 1 lab exam, with cheat sheets allowed. Records his lectures and provides notes for us to study with. Unfortunately, you will not know your grade until the very end of the quarter.
He had an emergency and about a quarter of the class felt a bit messy at first, but overall it turned out fine. It was easy to get an A if you kept up. After the first few weeks, things got much more organized. Honestly, take him He's probably the greatest chem professor at De Anza. He will teach chem 1A at fall so please take hiim!!!!!!!
The professor had a family emergency the first week, which impacted the course. However, he struggled to stay organized. He often said he'd do things but didn't follow through. Lessons felt more like Chem 1A, and study material didn't reflect the tests. I was stressed, frustrated, and confused and the lack of clear structure made it hard to pass.
Chem 25 Dr. Gray truly cares. Setbacks made the class fast-paced, & grades came at the end. I got a 61/125 on the first test but studied tons from that point,15 hrs/week, MSTRC tutoring,YouTube, office hours. If you don't understand chem well you're going to need to plan REAL study time minimum 10 hours per week to get an B or an A in Chem class.
If you have the chance to take him, DO IT! He is amazing at explaining. I took chemistry for YEARS in school, he taught me everything i didn't in the span of 3 months. There are a lot of exams but he is very clear on what topics he will test us on. The only reason he has bad reviews is because of an emergency last quarter that caused a setback.
