Kinda goofy, but fun!
he is an awsome teacher, kinda dorky and really goofy, but he is more then willing to help anyone with anything ... if you have a question on an assignment he will gladly help you and make sure you leave with the correct answer. he really wants his students to understand the material. SUPER TEACHER!!!

His exams are too general. The material should cover more specific topics

out of all my classes, i cant stand this one the most
You can't understand one thing the guy talks about and he throws in too much stuff that isn't needed. Good luck!
It was his first year at the university. he is tough..but he does have inclass points to help you out with your grade. the test are hard..make sure you pay attention ..it will shows if you dont. he talks about his cats & plants a little too much. i'd hate to be mean to the guy cause he is nice & helped out when i had questons but i wouldnt take him
He posts all the notes on the web. If you know someone in class, help each other out, and you'll do fine.
he is a really hard teacher...if you are really not interested in plants then it is hard..his test require alot of work for each question..and each question is almost a page long..and usually have nothing to do with lecture.he does give you alot of points to help you raise your grade cuz alot of students are falling around this time. DO NOT TAKE HI
hard!! im an A student, studied my BUTT off for this course and only got a B because of lab!!! never got above a D on any test, they're really hard, only way to do well was to read, and read carefully because hes really specific and you dont know what hes gonna test on. he was helpful on homework but he does talk a lot about plants and his cats :(
Not a good teacher. Talks about his cats and plants way too much. His test questions are worded really awkwardly and are hard to understand.
I really liked Grise's class but, not the best for those not going into a biology related field. Lab is time consuming. Going to class is a MUST!! GO TO THE QUESTION SESSIONS before the tests and stay till they're over. I rarely read my text but I've never missed a class! Ask him questions, he'll always help.
I thought he was great. I wouldn't recommend him for someone not going into the biology field, but I thought he was great! He loves his job and is incredible enthusiastic. If you show him you are willing to learn, he will help you as much as he can. I loved his class, but I hated the lab! But if you keep your grades up in class (which I'm not go
He was great! you do have to work your tail off though. He loves what he is doing, and is great at explaining things. Alot of people that don't like him just didn't try hard enough! He likes to talk about his cats...and he loves plants! (He brings one to class everyday) So I would reccomend him if you are a hard worker
He's horrible. He teaches things are useless. I wish we have better teacher in our school. PEOPLE, NEVER TAKE HIS CLASS! maybe i'll take BIOL 1407 in other school. He made me thinking about transfering school. NEVER EVER TAKE HIS CLASS!!
Great Professor, Teaching is incredibly awesome. Pretty Challenging exams, you must go to class and ask mentors if you don't understand something.
I would avoid this class. I think if you are a biology major you might love this class, but I am not a bio major...so I hated it!! To me he does not have a good attitude at all and acts kind of cocky! I pretty much survived the class through my $200 text book!
Hes a cool teacher..I've had him last semester for bio 1406. i had a C 1st semester but i got the hang of it and now have an A this semester. If you have trouble ask the TAs for help! its why theyre there. Going to the SI sessions are EXTREMELY helpful. Plus be sure to take his practice exams over and over again till you get a 100. It really helps.
Great professor! You definitely need to work and keep up with the material, but his teaching style is very helpful. He stresses the big picture not the little details. I took him for 1406 and 1407, and I would do it again. Take it!
Hardest teacher I have ever had. Make sure to read the chapters he assigns for team learning assignments, pay attention to powerpoints, and take as much notes as you can. Tests are very hard, at least for me, he is a very picky grader on free-response portion. I have worked my butt off the entire semester and I still have a D. Avoid if you can!!!
Attendance, Attendance, Attendance...Oh.. Attendance. DO NOT MISS! Bring qwizdom EVERY SINGLE DAY. Know the Team-Learning assignment inside and out. GO TO SI SESSIONS!!!!!!
He is very nice and very helpful if you take the time to go to his office hours and just talk to him but make sure he gets to know you because he will give you helpful hints that he didn't share in lecture. Understand the material from the book, lecture, CPR assignments, Quizes, and the Team Learning Assignment because you will see them again.
If you attend the class, listen the lecture and do the assignments, there is nothing hard with his class. I think he explains everything clearly and I enjoyed his classes. I wish I could take Bio 1407 with him too...:/
Do not take this class if you plan to slack..he is a meticulous grader. There is a lot of work to keep up with and not much time to do it. He may not be the nicest fellow around but his notes are clear. Brilliant guy, just seems he lacks a bit on the communication part of life. Very sarcastic as well. This class will make you work and study ALOT
RuBisCO is all you need to know in this class because he brings it up in almost every lecture. He does expect you to keep up with his work but he supplies you with so many oppertunities that as long as you take advantage of them youll do fine in the class.
He is the hardest teacher I have ever had in my life! Do not take this class unless you plan to major in biology, cause he goes very into detail. There are also a lot of components to thise class. You have to read a section ever week, he checks attendace by quizzes, then there is lab, CPR grades through webct, and his very hard tests.
Great professor; you'll learn a LOT from him. Hard exams, but if you study the material given especially by going to Anna's SI sessions you'll know exactly what to expect and do fine.
Very difficult but rewarding course if you pay attention, read, and attend SI Sessions. His TA's are very helpful, I asked them all the questions I had because he never really seemed to want to help when I asked him questions, but for girls its the other way around. Be prepared to put in 10 hours or so a week outside of class for an A.
He was the worst teacher ever. He is great at teaching work, but lets peers grade the assignments. You would think this would be beneficial, but actually sometimes the peers do NOT know what they are talking about and grade you poorly. He will not change the grade of an assignment graded by your peers.
He needs to HELP his students when they ask for is help.
the course is very engaging and helpful for students wanting to go to graduate school
Dr. Grise is an awesome professor, he cares about his students more than any professor I've had. He is even head of the STEP program, and hires his own mentors to help out his classes. He may be a plant fanatic, but he still covers all the bases. Anyone who says he is bad just doesn't want to do the work- news flash, you're in college.
he loves to talk about plants. The class is very hard. i have been to all the si sessions and read all the assined chapters and am still making a C. i have yet to make higher than a d on any exam this year.
I honestly do not understand why everyone says that he is so hard. If you do the work you will be completely fine and the work isn't even hard.
Don't take this class if you won't be there every day-he gives out points every day in lecture. If you can't go to any of the SI sessions, you're out of luck. He can come off a bit rude, and the way he words his questions on exams can really mess you up. If you do all the assignments, you can still pass the class, even if you screw up on the tests.
This guy sucks. And he gets off to plants. If you don't like to spend time at home seducing your plants, don't take this guy. He will not help guys. If you are a girl he will at least answer your questions. Most of his answers to your questions are, idk you tell me. So he is not slot of help.
He is an very hard teacher. Loves plants a bit too much, wouldn't give me .3 points so that i could get a C this semester. I never got above a D on any of his tests both semesters. He favors girls way more than guys. Introduce yourself and befriend him so that he likes you. Go to his sessions and stay the whole time. Befriend his helpers. STUDY!!!
This is a hard class and you need to show up everyday because he hands out points daily. The way he words the questions on tests and quizzes really confuse a lot of people and many people get bad grades because of this If you ask a question he won't really answer your question and usually walks away. He loves plants it's kinda creepy
He's a great teacher. He truly cares about his students. Many people have negative thing to say about him just because the class is hard. Im sorry but no pre med or pre professional students should expect to breeze by bio. The class is difficult but manageabe and you learn tons. I got an A and I just read the chapters and listened to his advice.
I felt that he was a great teacher. The class is a lot of work and students must make sure they read the syllabus for all assignments, because he may not mention all BUT they are in the syllabus.Class attendance is a must. Pay attention, do the work, study and passing shouldn't be a problem. Basically, just act like the adult we all are.
Grise really makes an effort to make students hone critical thinking skills. He's never going to give you the answer, and that's why students think he's so hard. It's college! Go to SI sessions and you're fine. If you show interest, he's more than willing to help you out with anything.
His class can be hard if u make it hard.It is important to try and communicate with him. You can kinda slack on all the tests meaning getting Cs or Ds but if you well on the final you'll be fine.Always do minute papers! or they will be the death of you, seriously! Go to as many SI sessions as you can. They help if you come prepared with questions
awesome professor and really knows his stuff. GO TO CLASS! most of the exam questions are usually asked in class. slakers do NOT take him. you deserve the grade you get.
This class was horrible. Hes click obsessed which use daily and on test. He also gives u a daily quiz grade on random parts of the lecture he has not gone over yet. Doesnt teach and most of the class is done on ur own with out of class assignments. The funnest part of the class was watching my 96 average drop weekly even when i was making 100s
Ridiculous class. He taught PLANT biology, not comprehensive biology. The book was mandatory, yet when he assigned readings, they were never discussed in class. Lecture and tests were never connected. DO NOT take him!!
Extremly hard class, but nice proffesor. The subject itself is challenging, and he tends to enjoy it that way. He gave alot of oportunity to bring your grade up, but still didnt do well. Go to class and to SI sessions. You learn more there than in class
He has gotten low reviews but he is the only bio teacher that gives you so many opportuinities for points to bring your gd up! I would def. take him! And he is very passionate about his bio! :)
Hard class. You really have to work in this one. If you are any kind of science major you must take him. He's a fun person, however he is a very good exam maker. He will challenge you and make you relate concepts in class to real examples. Go to class, read the chapters, take notes, study hard. Making a B is easy, to make an A you better work hard.
It is a hard class, but he gives you a lot of opportunities to get points in order to raise your grade.
He gives you many opportunities to get points other than the exams. You have to read and go to the SI sessions because thats how you know what will be on the exams/TLAs. He isn't very straight forward in class and the stuff on the slides isn't very vital to exam stuff. Occasionally he'll slip one in there.
He gives you many opportunity for pints and attendance is very mandatory because quizdom questions will actually help your grade.
This class is very hard and requires most of time, if you don't read or look at your email you miss chance at earning a good grade, he hardly help you unless your a girl, his assistants teach most of the material at S.I, the lectures are hard and he quizzes on the material everyday for point, he is plant obsessed, don,t take if you want an A in bio
Good luck if your brave enough to take Grise cause your gonna need it. His tests are straight-up HARD and if you want to pass them your gonna need to spend ALOT of time studying every little detail. Overall he has other assignments like TLA's, CPR's, and in class questions that help so take advantage of it if you want to get a good grade.
The 7 Laws of Grise:1.I am Grise who brought you out of BIO 1406;you shall have no other plants before me. 2.You shall not make for yourself any RuBisCo,nor bow down or worship it. 3.You shall not misuse The Law of Grise. 4.You shall remember and keep pi day holy. 5.Respect carpels and stamens. 6.You must not kill plants. 7.You must self.
This guy..he loves plants, so be ready for some botany. Read the syllabus carefully and know how he weights his assignments. He is arrogant and if you're a guy, good luck getting any sort of help from him. Just play his game and hope for a decent grade. Good luck!
Class was easy. Do all the assigned work, and there will be no problem getting an A.
He's no help outside or inside of class! He's the most obvious favorite picker too. His tests are ridiculous and when everyone does bad on them, his response is to make them harder.
This class is definately a challenge. Be sure to be one of his "favorites" otherwise good luck. Taking good notes is pretty much key in this class. The test suck because he doesn't explain why you got the question wrong he just puts "NO!" He's also helping you though to prepare for future classes.
Dr. Grise is a great professor that helps you only if you make the effort to get help. He gives you many chances to do well. You're not spoon fed, so if you aren't up for a challenge his class is not the best. Try hard and you'll do well. You get the grade you deserve.
Very hard course. He requires students to be active learners. However, I knew alot more than the student who had other professors in lab. All the hard paid off. Using it in micro
he dosen't care what u get. if u miss a deadline then too bad for u cuz its a ZERO. he gives a whole lot of assignments. you need to study harddddd everyday for his class. u gotta attend his class for the pop questions cuz they are for a grade, other than that his lecture is pointless. u gotta depend on the text book in studying
A lot of work, some very helpful, some not as helpful. Stay on top of all your assigments, if you get behind just quit!
It's easy if you read the book and really try to understand the material. This is a class where you must read the text and try to figure out how he asks questions.
sometimes his lecture has nothing to with lecture was been covered in the class. and labs are not correlated with class. if you ask him for help he will only help you once, but he does not answer the question. when class started he told us that he will do anything to help our grades, but not really he does not care what we get or not in his class.
I loved his class!!!!
Not a class you can sleep away, but if you do the work, labs, pay attition, and actually study you really learn a lot. SI definitly help in this class & if you ask he does try to help just have to learn to understand how he teachs cuz its not like most teachers.
You have to study AND read the chapters, think creatively like a scientist. Daily quizdom questions are a huge part of grade. This is a class where reading ahead before covering it in class is an excellent idea. He wants you to be proactive and involved. He's actually really nice and loves plants and dark chocolate. A lot.
So hard. Hard to understand. Quick paced class
This class is very easy if you go to the SI sessions which are held by his SI instructor if you have questions he will directly answer them and not beat around the bush he gives you many opputuntities to pass his class with TLAs, CPRs and test you have no excuse to fail unless you are just straight up lazy
If you are taking BIOL in a science learning community, be prepared for a difficult experience. This course is A LOT OF WORK! However, Grise may seem terse in lecture, but in person he is an understanding guy. If you ask he will personally help you through any questions in person or e-mail. Plus it's a good idea to attend STEP sessions!
Worst professor I have ever had hands down. Not helpful at all. I ended up with a 78 and I busted my butt all semester. Must go to class or you will fail. He has bs team learning assignments and a group test. Hopefully you get a good group if not you have to take the test by your self and carry your classmates very frustrating.
If your schedule conflicts with the SI sessions that his teacher aids hold then be prepared for a very difficult class. The SI sessions are really the only effective way to figure out what is on his group exams and individual exams. Make sure you read the chapters at least 1 time along with a second review if you want to make A/B's on the quizzes.
This class was great. He is a wonderful teacher and very enthousiastic. He will always explain whatever you need to know, or don't understand if you just ask. He is very personable and has a great sense of humor. He made this class fun and interesting by applying real life situations to help you understand concepts.
He's a really great teacher. I was kind of frustrated with the work, but everything we cover in the lectures, TLAs, and CPRs are all used on the exams. Also his final exam are all of the first three exams combined (the exact questions and answers) plus a fourth exam over the last few chapters which is easy. Overall do the work and you'll do good.
I went to class every day. I studied, read the chapters, did just about everything I could think of to keep up with this class. SI sessions conflicted w/ sched. I got a D. His tests had nothing to do with what was in the book. His notes didn't make sense. He had test/quiz sections with up to 10 possible answers! It was insane.I do not recommend him
He is by far the worst professor I have ever had. The way he words questions on tests/TLA's makes no sense at all. Then on top of the incomprehensible questions, there is up to 6 possible answers! You must go to SI sessions to even halfway understand what is going on. Lecture and labs do not correlate. I do not recommend him to anyone!
He expects freshman students to have a PhD level of understanding about the most minute details of biology. Instead of this being general biology where you are supposed to learn the fundamentals, he expects every student to know/understand concepts that even my biology teacher in high school could not help me with. He is awful. Do not recommend
He teaches material at a high level and already expects you to understand it prior to class. Fast paced classes. MUST ATTEND EVERY CLASS. I've never missed one class, attended many STEP sessions, and studied & still ended with a C. Emails are important from him. Group assignments can really kill your grades. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND!
Does not tolerate slackers/stupidity. Possibly the most challenging professor at a school known for lazy students. He expects his students to actually do work!
This professor truly cares about the students and their education. He assigns a large work load but for good reason. His class is not hard but it is challenging. If you put forth effort you will get a good grade.
Dr. Grise is an awesome Bio professor. He is obsessed with plants and loves to share his knowledge with students. If you go to class, you will do fine. You have plenty of opportunity to make an excellent grade. Daily points are awarded and they add up quickly. He lectures on a college student level, plus he is quirky. It's funny.
Take him. He is very understanding, super helpful. Trust me. TAKE HIM
He is an extremely hard professor and expects you to know just about everything even before you enter into his class. YOU MUST ATTEND EVERY CLASS or you will fail. Studying is a must and SI sessions are very helpful. He knows what he;s talking about, but he is far to difficult for a freshmen level course. Overall I got a B, and I was very proud.
I heard so many negative things about Grise before taking this class, but he is not that bad!!!! He is definitely better than Doyungan. His tests are a little tricky and strongly worded, but if you go to class, pay attention, and read your book, absolutley anyone is capable of an A.
I was apprehensive about taking this class because of what I had heard, but I learned a lot and once I figured out how to study for his tests I did really well! Go to as many SI sessions as possible and ALWAYS do the reviews for tests and TLAs and you will do fine. Highly recommend this professor.
I do not recommend him at all. I have made dean's list for a few semesters in a row taking upper level classes and succeeding as one of the top students. His teaching style is VERY confusing and even if you understand a concept he will confuse it.
When I was confused in his class I would visit him during office hours and he would clarify everything I was confused about. He would direct me in how to study for his exams and was willing to be available to any student that was confused and having difficulties in lecture.
I liked Dr. Grise. He actually loves his job, and he wants to be there, teaching. He's always excited about his plants and takes great pride on his assistants. His test arent that hard but he is a strict grader, so make sure you know what he wants. He'll make you read the book and test u on it most fridays, and he gives online assignments. DO THEM!
Work for your grade. Show up for TLA's. Read the book - his lectures are about 30 minutes of him talking about himself and only 20 minutes of content.
He will confuse you. SI leaders are waayy more helpful. He hardly talks about actual biology or clearly explains his concepts. He assumes you know everything. If you feel confident about a test, do not believe that confidence. He puts stuff on the test you don't even go over in lecture or SI sessions.
Great professor but is a tough class. The class is definitely worth taking with Dr. Grise.
Grise does a great job at explaining materials and helping any student. Yet the tests are tough and you have to think outside the box. Do NOT procrastinate, you will fall behind and fail. Made a B in his class, yet spent many nights studying hardcore so be prepared.
Although he is a tough teacher he is always willing to help and very interactive with his students. Sometimes his lectures are hard to follow but he always puts his power points online that you can refer back to.
Grise is a good professor. He's going to get on your nerves but it's only bc he's making you actually try and think about the big picture. We do a good amount of group work. There's a lot of points to earn but don't let the little ones slip away. You will have to study. SI sessions really help so go to every one that you can.
Gives a lot of tests with a lot of open ended questions. On this open ended questions, you have to answer them exactly how he wants them or he'll count them wrong. He gives TWO tests as his final which is a horrible thing to do. He is not understanding or nice. Basically if he thinks you don't know Biology, you are irrelevant and stupid to him.
Let's see... He makes you think--HARD! You have to be a critical thinker, read A LOT, and go to class.I like the fact that he is excited about life and his work, but that enthusiasm is expected of you as well. If you do not find interest in plants, you're screwed. His lectures are hard to follow and forget your quizdom and you might as well go home
Wish I would have gone to SI Sessions. Grise is tough, but if you are willing to bust your book over your head and stay prepared, you'll get a B or higher. I made a high B in the class, if I would have went to SI and office hours, I could have gotten an A...
For a freshman biology class, we are being taught like we are graduate students. Transferred to another college in a different city and even my Anatomy professor could not believe what Grise made us do. This class is a weed out class but dont give up on yourselves. I made a C but still have a 3.0+GPA.
He is a wonderful professor, you will have to work for your grade though. He is really helpful, just go talk to him and he will help with anything, he is all around a great guy.
Be sure to attend supplemental instruction at least once a week and attend every class if you want to do well. If you're a female, you will get much more attention and assistance. He lives plants! If you pay attention, take notes, review slides, and attend and participate in SI sessions, there's no reason to fail this class. Labs easy also.
Everybody says he is too tough but he is actually very helpful if you talk to him. I don't think his assignments are too bad, I had him for 1406 and 1407. The TLA's can be tricky but his tests are straight from lectures and he gives a lot of hints of what to study. Overall I think he prepared me for my other BIO classes and I enjoyed his class.
Basically the hardest class I've ever taken because of him. Every time i asked for help or if i asked a question, he would make me feel stupid. Along with many other people i knew in that class. Just don't do it.
GO TO SI SESSIONS!!! While Dr. Grise is not very helpful, his SI instructors will save your grade! They basically tell you what is on every test. He is very particular in the way he wants you to answer his questions, so GO TO SI SESSIONS and learn what he wants you to say!
His class can be difficult but if you go to SI sessions and go to his office hours you should have no problem. The homework isn't too bad, it's all online and they're easy points. Be ready to answer questions in class(for points). Tests can be challenging so you do need to study. Over all the class was great. I would take his class again.
heres the thing, this class is hard and Dr. Grise makes you work for the grade. you have to goto class and SI sessions. if you do not put in the effort you will not do well in the class but if you try he will teach you great concept that will help you once you move to higher level courses.
The worst teacher I have ever had in my whole school life! I passed his class but it hurt my GPA. The test are over stuff that was not talked about in SI or in class. If you have a weird thing for plants or if you are a girl take his class. If not, take any other class (Even if it is online). Do not take this class if you value your GPA!
Hard Professor to follow. Read each chapter more than once. Be sure to go to as many SI sessions as possible.
Make sure to be clear on short answer questions. NEVER say "it". Attending class is a must for the participation and in class questions. Read the book and take good notes. Use lecture slides when he puts them up, read them beforehand.
This class was the hardest class I have ever taken in college. I am done with college 4 year degree and my fiancé took this class and was the only class she failed the first time she took it in college. She was a strait A student and now current RN. This class almost made me believe college might not be for me. Dont take if you are not a genius.
