David's lectures contain material not in the text. If you expect to do well on his essay exams, you MUST read the text for yourself. He is the most helpful professor I have ever had in 6 years of study.
Very easy, very fun. He's like Martin Short.
One of the best instructors I have ever had. Would recommend him to anyone!
Best Prof ever!
He is Martin Short! :-) His teaching gets you the full perspective instead of pinpointing all the dates times and places.*thumbs up*
David always ends up talking about subjects that are totally irrelevant to our class and then gives us a lecture in twenty minutes. He is so vague that you will never know what is going to be on his tests. He also makes them up when he gets to class that day. He is not helpful at all.
great prof, made class interesting, often gets of topic though, and is VERY easy.

Awesome teacher!! He is fully of stories and entertainment--very animated. This class was a breeze, he was very helpful. No homework at all!
you get your money's worth
He's funny, referes to himself as a short sh*t from Detroit. Falls off of chairs when pulling down maps. Great class, and he's a spaz.
Show up to class and it's an easy 4.0
READ OTHER RATINGS, BEST TEACHER EVER, BEST CLASS EVER, NO HOMEWORK, 3 EASY TESTS, GET OUT EARLY EVERYDAY, UNBELIEVABLE!!!
excellent, hillarious, all around great class!
THIS IS THE GREATEST CLASS EVER. We defintely get our "money's worth" daily. People ought to lighten up and ENJOY. If you enjoy a laugh along with history, he's VERY knowledgeable, it's a great class to take. Definitely one of the best classes I've been enrolled in at this school.
Great teacher, easy class. For all of you who don't like history, take this class. A word of warning, some people may find his sense of humor offensive.
he is a great teacher, very helpful and understanding. i NEVER liked history, he gets you interested. all the extra little tid-bits he tells. i am going to take hist 212 with him just cause, it's not even required for my transfer agreement. i would recommened him anytime to anyone!!!
The best history teacher you could select at LCC. Not only is he hilarious to watch but he always emphasizes on "getting your money's worth" and doing what you want to do when you grow up. Sure, he gets off topic for a half hour but he usually gets back to history. Include misc. facts from the book if you want to do well on the 3 tests.
I hate History never liked it in highschool and REALLy dreaded taking it here. David was awesome! He made it easy to understand and had the class laughin the whole time. I got a 4.0 in the class.. I would tell anyone about him cause he was great! You would be crazy not to take some other teacher!
He's definitely the right person to take if you're not into History! He makes the material interesting and likes to have fun in his class. However, if you're into all that date memorizing stuff, pick some other professor because he doesn't rely on it.
Hands down, best prof. Ive ever had. I have like a 3 second attention span but I actually listen to his entire lectures. Yeah, he gets off subject for about 45 minutes before he actually starts the class but normally he is just talking about current events, which I love. AWESOME!
Wow Dave is a FUNNY man. I was entertained every time I went to class. There were 3 tests and all take home, no homework, and lets you out early almost every time. He likes to ramble and tell funny stories and talk about whats goin on in the world so lecture really didn't last long. If u have to take a History class he is the man to take it with!
Everyone kept raving about David Guard before I signed up for History - which I was dreading. So I took his class even though it was only offered in the middle of the day. I wasn't disappointed since he didn't require any of that date memorization crap. However, I think he kind of just throws darts to decide on grades. Grades were really random.
His rambles can be annoying & repetitive and I almost would have rather had a normal class instead of his lectures. He grades harder than you'd expect on his take home tests, and you'll probably fail the exam if you don't read the textbook, but I somehow managed to get a 4, so he must grade based on something else. He's okay, but not awesome.
Whatever, hes AWESOME
Great professor! He is a mix between Mr. Bean & Austin Powers. You actaully learn the information. Exam are crazy, he just picks random words that you have to write about. On exams write as much as you can whether is BS or not, he seems to grade better when you write more. Review your notes. If you have to take a history class take it with Guard
This teacher tells History like he's spreading gossip. It's awesome. You definitely want to hear more. It's inspirational to see a Professor so fired up for the subject he's teacher. Best professor I've ever had in school and I've been in school for about 5 years.
Yes,Austin Powers is the best look for him. Hes by far the best teacher you'll ever have. He makes history more fun then you'd believe. Not only a great teacher but really nice outside of class. a++++++++++++
Took Dave for 211 & 212. HE IS AWESOME!!! Not difficult to stay interested, very entertaining professor.
amesome guy realy makes history fun. only 3 tests no homework. Get out of class early almost everytime. best professor i had at lcc.
Dave IS BY FAR THE BEST TEACHER I EVER HAD, FUN GUY..TEACHES VERY WELL AND CARES FOR HIS STUDENTS. NO HOMEWORK 3-4 TESTS. 1 TAKE HOME! IF YOU NEED HISTORY TO GET OUT OF LCC..HE IS BY FAR THE BEST TEACHER THERE IS!!!
Best damn teacher ever! Makes nice little analogy's that happened to him when he lived in detroit for Spanish-American way
He gets off subject frequently. You have to read the book to do well on the tests, he tests on smaller topics. Overall I did not really like him as an instructor and would not take him again.
meh. 50/50. A really great class, but some of the students tend to get out of control with conversations.
Entertaining! What he does is talk the whole class period about a certain topic. He talks about the topic like he has lived it. I have actually learned a lot by him just talking. You do not get any homework. Nor do you take any quizzes. Your grade is based on 3 tests and the final. You dont need the book in class, but need to read it for the tests.
Guard is a wonderful professor and an all around great guy! The tests are open and not nitpicky at all! His lectures are very fun and funny as well. He makes it worth it to go to campus every day.
Dave is the man! I have always enjoyed History and he made it that much more interesting! Funny guy!
Difficult to stay interested, This teacher tells History like he's spreading gossip or like he was their. His rambles can be annoying & repetitive and I almost would have rather had a normal class instead of his lectures. Emphasizes on "getting your money's worth" On his test they are short writings, and no matter how much facts you use from the b
Guard is a great prof. He is really helpful and a really nice guy. You must attend his lectures and read the text, but overall not too hard of a class. There are 3 essay tests and one departmental final. I would DEFINITELY recommend him!
Loved this class. Will hel you any way he can to make sure you understand the material. Only 3 eassay tests, read the chapter for this. Then one department final. All lecture beyond that. Great teacher I would take any class with him. As long as you take notes from his lectures and read the book you will be fine.
Dave is a wonderful teacher. He is very easy going and will do anything to make sure you understand whats going on and be able to pass the class. There are only 3 exams and 1 departmental final. Going to class is a must tho!!
Professor Guard is a very competent instructor and I learned a lot from him. He cares about the students and tries his hardest to make sure you get it. If you fail his class you just did not even make an effort and are probably pretty stuck on stupid.
Took his online summer class and found it to be WAY better than any in-person class. 4 essays and chapter discussions make up your final grade. He has chapter summaries that were very interesting and easy to understand. Highly recommend this class.
Ladies and Gentlemen: David Guard gets it. He is a professor who will try to carry you to the finish line as long as you put up some type of effort. He's prompt and a lot of fun. He takes the time to stay after class if need be. If you fail his class.... there probably is no hope for you.... seriously. AM
David is an amazing professor. He really gets into the class! We never stay the full time, we usually get out half an hour early. Always nice. His tests are okay. All essays, around 8 questions. He grades on an individual curve.
Great Teacher very entertaining but had a error in my grades and have been trading emails with him for 2 months trying to set up a meeting. Extremely hard to get in contact with takes almost a week to reply to each email to fix a simple error. Grades harsh on the test so study hard attendance is a must.
I have only taken one test so far, but I went to every class, sat in front, and took detailed notes. I got a 56% on my test somehow. The test does not say where the points were taken away just "56" and "Need more from text" not sure why my grade was so terrible since all my other classes I have received mid-high 90%s on everything.
Great instructor. Attendance is a must and *reading for the exams* is a must. If you read the book and study lecture notes, you'll do well on the exams. "Need more info from the text" means you need more info from the books, it's that simple. There is no homework, just 3 exams and department assessment.
i've never had a professor who was so hard on grading. he only gives out 3 exams through out the semester and your grade is depended on how well you do on those, and the final exam. all of his exams were essay questions. he does not post grades online either...ever. he is very knowledgable and entertaining in his lectures.
Very exciting class lectures. Very knowledgeable and keeps class interesting. Best instructor i have had so far.
mostly lectures, a few classes you will watch movies. you NEED to read and study the book in order to do well on tests, class grade is made up of 3 tests and attendence. he never uses technology including D2L or even a computer. gives much unneeded information in class that you won't need to know for the test. again STUDY THE BOOK.
Great Professor. He makes the class interesting. He is very knowledgable. I would recommend him for anyone.
Very knowledgeable on History. Class is entertaining but you ABSOLUTELY have to read the book. Your class grade is based solely on 3 tests (all based on the reading) and a departmental assessment. Tough grader, but it was my own fault for not reading.
One of the most interesting and knowledgable history teachers I've ever had. I learned so much from him and would definitely take him again. Very laid back class. Make sure to do reading for the tests or he will mark you down for not using examples from the book. Great teacher
The most intoxicating, amazing teacher i have ever had the privilege of having. He cares for each and everyone of his students whole heartily. If you read the text book and pay attention to the lectures, you will 4.0 the class. If you have to take a history class take a class taught by David Guard.
David is great! I went into the class dreading it because I am so bad at history, but the way he structures his class I was able to succeed! Grade is based on only 3 exams; but on those exams he is very laid back about dates and names. Just make sure you read the text book because he wants plenty of details from the book. All in all, great professor
Best history teacher! thought I failed but ended up with a B. Read the textbook and you should be fine. Attendance is not mandatory, but class ends early and he gives good notes. Very entertaining for a history teacher. Do not take anyone else!
Absolutely one of the BEST teachers I have ever had at LCC. Dave is one of the funniest people I have come across. Grade is only based on three tests and they are not cumulative.Make sure you read the book for his tests. He has so much passion for what he teaches! If you have to take a History class, take David Guard!
so nice, easy grader, really good at teaching because he knows it in and out.
One of the absolute best teachers I have ever had. Enthusiastic, interesting lectures. Took a few of us on a tour Detroit (his home town) and we had a blast! He makes history come alive.
He gives interesting lectures and inspires students. I don't like history, but he made it interesting. It was the first time I actually learned about our history and was finally able to understand. There was 3 tests total. As long as you read the text and study his lectures, he grades fairly. In the end he curves the grades. Great teacher!
History is taught with passion and with clarity with a vast knowledge. Made history fun to learn. And is fun to talk to.
Enjoyed this class last Fall. David Guard is very interested in his field of study and makes sure to show it during his lectures. He always has a schedule on the board of what he will talk about that day. He's also very interested in China, and it showed when he kept asking the 4 Chinese students in my class things during and after lecture.
David is one of the best teachers I've had so far. He writes what you're going to discuss in class on the board, which is helpful. He has such a passion for what he does and makes history come alive through his lectures! I would definitely recommended him!
David is a great teacher. He likes to help and is very passionate about history. He goes off topic sometimes. I would recommend him, he cares about his students. Can miss some class but read to make up work. Tests aren't hard but all essay questions, you can use common sense for most questions.
Take David Guard. This guy knows how to lecture and keep you entertained while at it. All in all, there are 4 exams and a 5 page paper over the course of the semester so the workload is quite light. As long as you pay attention in class you'll do great. There are readings that he suggests you do, but honestly I've barely even touched my textbook.
Mr. Guard it's the bomb! I would definitely recommend him. He sure know his stuff. A tough grader but you will get by. I took this class online, which I recommend as well. He is not too picky about weekly discussions, but expect to write some essays. Overall, great guy, amazing professor, you won't regret taking this class with him.
This class is made up of 4 test and a paper, if you are not good at test taking and need other grades to balance out your overall grade i do not recommend David. He is a great guy, just not my kind of learning style!
David is overall a nice guy, but he is just all over the place. I didn't find anything that he spoke about in his lectures, to actually reflect on his exams. The book will be your best friend in this class, due to his lectures not reflecting any of the material I needed on the exam. Also be ready to talk about "Hillary".
Very interesting & intelligent professor who is very passionate about history. He sits infront of the class and lectures off the top of his head in great depth. Always let out 30+ minutes early. 3 tests and one paper. Need to read about 200+ pages of the textbook before each test. Tests are 8 questions & a essay, all over his lecture or the reading
Professor Guard was very disconnected from my online class. Somehow I passed with an A but he would mark me down on some discussion boards and essays but never provided a rubric or guidelines to follow. If you want short sentences and are going to mark me down for long sentence structure you should provide a rubric so students know this in advance.
Mr. Guard is cool, he talks off the top of his head for a little over an hour usually and lets out early almost every time. There are three essay tests over the reading, one departmental final which is all multiple choice, and an essay which is a cake walk. He is tough on tests, often noting that more details from the book are needed. Would recomnd
He is very energetic and funny. A great professor, he definitively knows his stuff. For this class it will be 3 testes that you will know everything if you just read the books and watch some youtube videos. Plus you will write a paper which isn't hard. Have fun in his class.
David Guard is a real gem. He is an amazing professor, who genuinely cares for his students. We had a total of 4 essays and no tests. The final exam was impossible but has little weight on your final grade. Overall, he is a treat and a great professor overall.
He's nice and willing to help students. Although I like history, I thought the lectures were somewhat slow-paced and not all that engaging. His tests are all essays and pretty through, but not difficult to prepare for. Just read the book, which is free. I overall enjoyed his class and would recommend others take this subject with him.
A great teacher! The lectures are little boring but you can tell he is really passionate about history. Class is is super easy. Just take notes and you'll do great on test. I didn't even use the textbook once in the class and still 4.0 the class. It is super easy to do well in his class.
Yes, I can tell that he does care about History. But though that is true, I did not find his lectures to be interesting. He's a nice guy but I did not enjoy this class.
Awesome Professor! He's nice and willing to help students. His tests are all essays and pretty through, but not difficult to prepare for. I overall enjoyed his class and would recommend others take this subject with him.
David is a tough essay grader in my opinion but he is a great professor. He is very straight to the point on assignments and you will do well as long as you try & you're through. David is a professor who really knows what he's talking about and I can respect him for that. I'd take his class again. Make sure you study for the final exam!
his exams are topics you have to choose from and write about it. like short essays. he is very tough on them SO READ THE ONLINE BOOK. he talk a lot, i mean A LOT. it was ok but i would not take him again just because it was a 2 hours class and he spent most of the time talking about related topics and not the actual topic.
David is a real gem. Very funny, and extremely smart. He starts every day by writing the topic on the board, and then just goes off about it. Very funny, and extremely engaging. He was THE reason I didn't skip my History class. Very easy to study for tests as well, just show up and listen and beware of his "Senior Moments".
Wonderful dude. Thoughtful, funny. You have to go to class and do the work, but it's worth it. Class often ends half an hr to an hour early, but he'll stay and chat after. He writes the lecture topics out on the board, no powerpoints. Will sometimes go on tangents. A very energetic aging man.
Daivd guard is a great professor hes really funny and makes the lecture fun and enjoyable not boring. its an easy class if you actually read and pay attention in class and take notes. their will be only 3 exams and one paper to do which is pretty easy. I highly recommend him and would take again. he's a real gem and funny.
David was the best teacher I have had at lcc. Before class, I was not very interested in history but he made it my favorite class of the semester. It's lecture heavy but he always kept it very entertaining. I really recommend him for anyone taking history.
Uses an online text and get ready to read. Very nice guy. His tests are strictly essays so you really have to understand the content. Make sure you read over his class notes and the text before exams. He doesnt have a clear grading criteria but will meet with you outside of class. Take advantage his office hours if you want to succeed.
Fantastic professor, great lectures and many great history stories.
So David is a great teacher , the online class in the summer is easy and it has a steady schedule. you listen to his videos and do discussions.. nice couple of quizzes and before you know it your done. you will have a couple of easy papers. if you need additional information just watch crash course. other than that he is a solid smooth teacher. d
LITERALLY MY FAVORITE PROFESSOR AT LCC. such a sweet guy, really passionate about the content and dedicated to supporting students and offers lots of encouragement. 11/10 would take again and would highly recommend to any student considering his classes. you wont regret it!
Mr. Guard is a fantastic professor and one of the best educators I've ever had the pleasure of receiving education from. My class was completely online, yet the lectures were fantastic. There was a lot of note taking, but he was easy to communicate with and clear in directions. Overall, one of the best college classes I'll probably ever take.
I am very happy with this class. I am not a fan of history but the professor makes it very interesting. This class was online for me. You listen to a lecture, read the text that he provides (didnt have to purchase anything) and do an assignment. The exams are essays and I love that.
Professor guard is amazing! His lectures are very detailed, and hes hilarious. Hes very understanding and accepts late work all the way up to the end of the semester. You can tell he cares about his students, and what hes teaching. Theres essays instead of tests, and discussion questions every week. I highly recommend taking this class!
Prof Guard is an amazing professor. You can really tell he cares about what he teaches. Have not met anyone who doesnt like him.
Prof. Guard is one of the nicest professors I have ever met. He is caring, he compliments his students, and he lets them know they're succeeding. If you have to take a history class, take this one. If you read the textbook, and use it for discussions, you'll get good grades. The essays are also textbook based, the textbook is free and online.
Professor Guard class is educational. There is a lot of reading but when you listen to his lectures (2x a week) he has greater detail. You will post and respond to one other post each week. There are four paper due with a minimum of of 750 words during the course. He came highly recommended and did not disappoint.
I absolutely LOVED professor Guard, the only reason I got a C in this class was that I didn't complete an essay due to my own mistake, but he is an amazing grader, explains everything clearly, and is easy to reach. His assignments are relatively easy and there are no tests only 4 essays. I would definitely recommend taking his class.
Fine teacher, be ready for long, grating lectures. Be ready also for a not-so-subtle right-wing bias, which infiltrates into most lectures. If you're letting your present-day political affiliation affect your teaching, how can we trust anything you say? Asides about Hillary, Bernie, Liz Warren; not relevant to the subject matter...
Worst professor I've ever had. You can answer the discussion posts with exactly what the textbook says and he will still mark you down and ask for more. He is also the most unfunny person I have ever met. Get ready to hear a lot about his "senior moments" and his "world famous coffee". His lectures are so boring that I slept through them.
Professor Guard honestly reminded me of Mr. Rogers! Very sweet guy. The exams in his class were written, which for some people may not be ideal, but personally, I loved it! I felt that the answers being open ended made the tests MUCH less stressful. If you find yourself needing to take a history class, do yourself a favor and take it with him!
Take this class if you need it.
Professor Guard gave clear instructions on assignments and answered any questions I had in a timely manner. There was only eight paper due the entire semester, and I was able to knock out all the reading in a couple of hours.
