Hakes rules. If you don't like him, you must be retarded.
I enjoyed him. I also know some people who hav not. Not easiest class though if you arent good at economics.
This guy is crazier than a loon but he is very entertaining. The course is decently hard but his straight A is at 90%. I recommend him fully.
I absolutely hated this class and do not recomend hakes to anyone. He acted as if he was god just because he wrote the study guide, and frequently looked down upon the class. Not my favorite person in the world
Tells you everything you need to know. Tests are medium difficult but deal with it. He's a great professor.
Puts all notes on the board. Tests are ok but you need to study. Hes a funny guy
Really opened my eyes to the economist way of thinking, which makes so much sense. He is pretty funny. The tests are somewhat hard, but are multiple choice and he explains things really well.
I was out for several weeks with illness and he worked with me to make sure I got caught up. He is very understanding and has a great grasp of Econ. I could understand people misinterpreting his intelligence for arrogance but he is great.
My favorite teacher so far at UNI -- make sure you do the practice quizzes in the study guide because he uses DIRECT examples from those on his tests. Study your notes and you should do fine. I never opened the book. (he doesn't give pluses or minuses)
Awesome guy! Very funny and tells you everything you need to know. Writes everything on the board and takes test questions from study guide.. plus he wrote it. Great teacher, definatley take Hakes for macro, you wont regret it.
His quiz and exam questions are incredibly confusing. He is one-sided and doesn't accept more than his way for anything. He acts like a jerk in class. Not recommended.
Nice guy, interesting class, but that final was hard!
He knows his information really well. As long as you pay attention in class, you will understand the information. Tests are hard only if you don't study. Study a lot and you will do fine.
Great teacher...you must study quite a bit for the test the details can get you.
Very intelligent teacher. Tells good stories and explains the material very clearly. Review notes, skim text, DO STUDY GUIDE (he wrote it). Tests are tricky-you must know the material(dont count on recognizing MC answers, every possibility is there!
I think he's a jerk and a hard teacher. I didn't like taking his class. He's too boring and not that helpful.
Lectures are thorough and helpful. Learned very much in his class. Loved his teaching style. He is intimidating but will answer any question and will make sure that you understand. His practice probs will prepare you for the test well.
Missing just one class can be crucial, yet he explains things well. Quizzes are basically pretests, which is very useful. If you use the study guide (he wrote it) it helps a lot because some of the test questions may come directly from the study guide.
good teacher really knows his stuff focuses on the things you really need to know good and interesting class
He could be more apathetic to students needs and more kind when they don't understand things that are unclear to us and no-brainers for him!
Class is not too bad, boring, but its pretty easy if you pay attention and come to class. tests/quizzes arent too bad
Good teacher. GO TO CLASS! The book can be confusing but he explins everything. He wrote the study guide so do it. I went to his office a few times for help and it makes a big difference. He is not as bad as he may seem on the first day.
He gets right to the point and makes sure you understand everything. Doesn't beat around the bush, tells you exactly what to know. and he's hilarious in lectures
Awesome teacher. The book is confusing but he goes over EVERYTHING you need to know. I would still read the book though. Scarey at first but an over all great teacher.
i took macro with hakes and found it 100 times easier than it was with abraham.. he was understanding and tried to help as much as possible.
If you do the study guide that you have to buy with the class and pay attention in class you'll do fine. I thought he was a great prof. Makes the concepts easy to follow.
I hated him..he's not very nice or helpful..I would recommend not taking him and take someone else..if you miss one class you will be lost and never get back on track..DON"T TAKE HIM!!!(Take McCormick!)
Go to class. Take notes. You'll get the grade you've earned. He's fair. His sense of humor is sarcastic, but that's half the fun of his lectures. I hated macro until I took it with him. Definitely a good prof.
Very intellegent! The sooner you learn helping people is bad the better off you'll be. I've learned more from this class then any class I have ever taken.
Very easy class. his lectures are right out of the book and tests/quizzes are right out of the study guide
Very smart professor. Will help you understand any problems you are having if you speak up in class, or go to during his office hours. Tests directly from study guide. Don't miss a class and you recieve an easy A or B.
good teacher, explains everything well
My fav. teacher at UNI!! I learned so much in his class. He goes at just the right pace.

Hakes is awesome. One of the most intelligent professors at UNI. People who do bad in the class bring it upon themselves. The class is not easy, but he explains the information very well. I recoommend this class. You actually have to think while your in class unlike most classes.
He explains everything down to a tee -- that can be good or bad as sometimes it gets a little redundant, though during exams you can almost hear yourself saying the things he says in class. Overall, a good class - not too challenging but not too easy either.
i hated him and this class. its not hard, i got an A. but if you think you'll learn anything about the real world, you'll be disappointed. i know he has to teach it this way because they pay him, but he could at least not pretend that what he's saying is true. take someone else
Very good teacher
Easy class, great professor to take it with.
He makes things intersting and relates to the students the best any teacher really could. It isnt easy buy not to tough.
I really like this professor. He relates everything back to the students. The class is hard but so are all economics. You learn alot in this class.
Class isnt that interesting. His handwriting sucks, cant read whats on the board really. He talks way too fast. I really do not like him, hopefully you wont get him!
This professor is amazing!! He is perhaps the most intersting professor I have had yet. I had him for Macro and loved him so much that I took Money and Banking for fun. Although it is harder than Macroeconomics he still made it intersting and fun! I would highly recommend this professor. However, if you like to skip class- DON'T!! You won't pass.
This class will be the longest hour and fifteen minutes of your week but it isn't very hard. Go to class and you should do fine.
Good econ professor. The material isn't that exciting but he tries to keep your attention and gives examples to relate back to the students. You do have to read the book and pay attention, don't think you can slack off and do well. It isn't that hard if you do your stuff. He is one of the better econ professors I have had.
I think he is a great professor. He uses good examples to make sure everyone understands the material. Only 200 pts in the class so make sure you use them wisely!
This class is all common sense. All you need to do is read the study guide and do the questions. He wrote the book, and that's all he teaches over. Don't skip class and you'll do fine. He tells funny stories to relate what he is saying.
He talks way to fast. He knows his stuff. Tests are hard as hell because they are worded weird. Good luck.
He moves so fast! I took Macro with McCormick first, and then I had to drop it, and I would reccomend him before Hakes. Hakes is really cool, but he covers more material, and moves faster than McCormick.
He is a good professor but tends to move very fast. He knows what he is talking about, but makes the tests very hard.
Lots of notes and fast paced. You'll learn a lot. Study notes for tests and quizzes.
explains everything well, notes cover everything. willing to answer any questions and makes sure everyone understands the material.
is writing study guide, so it should be easier this semester. don't buy the book, all you need is his notes. Tests are hard as hell b/c his wording is meant to separate the people who know it well from those who kinda know it. know it well= A. kinda know it= F. Have fun with this one. remember: inflation is "economic crack cocaine"
hard class, went through lectures way too fast, tests are impossible, dont take him, terrible professor
Very helpful and interesting to listen to
he goes a little fast through the material, but if you keep up with the reading and the study guide (that he wrote) you should be fine. he gives good examples and honestly wants his students to pass, so he's easy to get help from. his tests are not too hard as long as you study and make it to class.
This class was one of the easiest I have taken through college. Hakes was more then helpful if you needed it and if you showed up to his lectures then you really didn't have to do anything else. Do the questions in the study guide and the class is cake.
Lectures are hard to keep up with, he goes off on random tangents and its hard to keep up with. Tests are next to impossible. DO NOT TAKE HIM
I really wish I could have him again for Micro, he's an awesome professor, not a liberal, and he really hammers home the topics. My one criticism are that his tests are really hard, but they're not tricky if you know the material. I really learned a lot from him, that's my measure of a good professor- he is.
Best professor on campus, PERIOD. Go to class, pay attention, study, learn. Passionate for his work. Brilliant individual. Highly recommended.
Test were pretty hard but he was fair in questioning.
Tests are hard but he does tell you what will be on them in his notes. 3 tests and 3 quizes with no homework but also no extra credit. I would take him again because he is easy to figure out as a professor.
TAKE THIS CLASS! Best professor I have had on campus! He really knows his material. Tests and quizzes are not difficult, you just need to study and go to class!

Good Prof. He was helpful. Should attend class because everything you need to learn is on black board.
Take him. Smart guy, can be pretty funny, and he knows material very well. Attend class because he explains things very well and everything you need is in the notes. USE THE STUDY GUIDE! Itll help you learn material better and many ?'s on tests are straight from the study guide.
Hakes is a great teacher. He concise, clear, and its easy to keep up with him in class (if you are awake). He uses good examples and he has some good stories. Hakes is smart, and it seems like he genuinely believes what he is teaching.
I would suggest taking him. He is a great prof. one of the best I have ever had. Examples are great. Use the study guide and you will be fine.
Fantastic teacher! He is very clear as to what he expects you to know and is easy to understand. Knowing what he writes down on the board is key to getting an 'A', so attendance is necessary. 3 tests, 3 quizzes, and only 200 points available in the class. Hakes is very approachable, friendly, and really wants you to do well in his class.
Excellent Teacher. He does an excellent job of explaining everything. Definitely Recommend!
GREAT PROF! Not the easiest professor in the world, but definitely one of the best. Is great at explaining the material and what he lectures is what he WILL test. Attendance is a must but you will learn a LOT from this brilliant guy.
Excellent Professor. Take his notes and do the study guides and you will do well. Makes the class very interesting when he uses examples that occur in real life. Class is based on 3 quizes, 2 exams, and the Final. Class can be difficult but you will do fine if take notes and do the study guides.
Great teacher... Easy to listen to and easy make sense of what he says. Tests are right from his notes and from the text.
great teacher. very clear on what he wants from his students. some consider him difficult simply because a minimul amount of work is required to do well. provides very helpful and clear study guide. recommended.
study a lot. do the study guide the test is based off his study guide...which he wrote himself. stud.
Good teacher! Tests are not easy but if you pay attention in class and study some you will get a good grade.
He is a fantastic prof. He has a great sense of humor, and really does a phenomenal job teaching the material. You should attend class and take good notes. His tests are a little difficult, but if you go to class, and then study for the exams you should be fine. Overall a greaet teacher, and got me into loving economics. Take him for Macro.
Pretty funny guy. Talks a little too fast for me. Just be a good student -- go to class, study -- and you should do fine. The study guide was my life and the questions were really similar to the tests.
awesome teacher loved the class. very challenging but if you look over your notes and complete all the study guides you will do well. if you go in for help he explains very well. pay attention in class and complete the reading before lecture it helps a ton
Great professor, funny guy. Extremely clear and helpful. Go over notes and complete his study guide and you're fine. Grades on a point system and kind of throws a personal curve in at end. Willing to answer questions and uses relatable examples.
One of UNI's best for sure. Makes himself available to students and is eager to help you understand the material. Tests are hard if you don't understand the material 100%. No need to purchase Mankiw's book. In Hakes own study guide he summarizes the chapters into two pages. If you can get your hands on an older edition of his study guide get it!
Hakes is a great professor. To be honest the class takes a lot of work, but read the chapter before class, listen to the lecture and do the study guides. All multiple choice. Hakes is very easy to understand and a pretty funny guy. I would take him again.
loved this class! it was a lot of work but if you go to class and take notes, you'll find it easy to get a good grade in the tests and quizes. he is very helpful and organized.
Hardest Class i've ever taken you have to keep up with him constantly he goes extremely fast when he's talking so if you can keep up good for you. You have to know how the world works before you enter the class.
Very good
Hakes really knows his stuff and is willing to go out of his way in and out of class to explain information more thoroughly if you don't understand. Make sure you read EVERY chapter and study for EVERY test though because his tests are difficult. And go to EVERY lecture..as he says "the class is the blackboard". So true.
A lot of notes! It is note taking the whole time, and hard sometimes to follow along. Tests are hard and there is only 200 pts in the class all of which are tests. The final is worth 65 pts. no extra credit. overall you must go to every class and take millions of notes.
Excellent professor. You will definitely learn a lot if you go to class! You need to put in good study time to do well on the tests unless you know it all. I would highly recommend this professor!
Great professor. No attendance policy but going to class is necessary to get notes and pass tests. Study guide is a HUGE help. Highly recommend this prof
Tough. Clear. Fair. Plan on many hours of study. Tests are hard. Quizzes are helpful. Review old tests. New way of thinking.
he moved vvery fast and his class was large, meaning if you had a question it was hard to get his attention. :<
You will have to focus in his class to understand. For exams the notes are most important. His tests are difficult but you will learn a lot from him, and I would love to take another class from him if I could. Take him if you want to learn something, if not then it will be tough. Not hard to earn an A if you study your notes. He is funny!
Like most other comments, you have to go to class and study notes. If you do that then you should be fine. The exams are tough but not impossible. You will learn a lot with Prof. Hakes as he really knows how to teach. Take him, you'll enjoy the class.
Probably one of the best teachers at the university. Attend EVERY class, otherwise you'll fall behind. Gives perfect notes, study guide very helpful. Had a B+ going into the final and finished with a C+ in the class...shows how difficult the final is.
Took Kanago for Money and Banking, re-took it with Hakes. Hakes is definitely more clear on his teachings, and it is actually possible to stay awake. You take notes the whole period, every period (except when there's a test or quiz). That's just the class, not the teacher. I would highly recommend studying, tests are difficult.
take very good notes and study a lot. hakes does a very good job of explaining the material, though and is pretty interesting during lecture.
Go to every class and take notes which are all day, every day. As he says, "the tests are the blackboard". Study a ton for the tests and quizzes. He does a really good job explaining concepts in class.
Great teacher. You are expected to know the material like the back of your hand though. Loves "none of the above" answers. Questions are kinda tricky on tests.
Really clear, knows what he's talking about. He says you need your text book but i didnt buy one and got by just fine. Just take really good notes, GO TO EVERY CLASS, listen to what he says and you should be fine. Really easy and i highly recommend him.
Very straight forward professor. He explains everything well in advance and his quizzes/tests are fair as long as you show up to class and understand the material. I strongly recommend taking him for Principles of Macroeconomics!
Awesome professor. Keeps the class interesting and makes the material relevant. Focus on taking notes and spend time understanding the material. If you go to class and study the notes you will enjoy getting a good grade. 3 quizzes and 3 tests. Weighs final heavily if you do better than your overall avg in class (only helps your grade). Take Hakes
Great professor of macro econ. You take a ton of helpful notes every day. 2 tests and a final plus 3 quizzes. He had a review night outside of class before the final which helps a ton. I prefer Hakes over Abraham for macro econ any day material wise.
Good teacher the whole year. every test wasnt too harsh. The final will kill you though.. The final is supposed to be comprehensive but barely any questions are like the previous tests. Very tough class for business students
Hakes is a great professor who explains the material very well. He made fun a lot of fun and wants everyone to do well in his class. Strongly Recommend taking Hakes for any classes he teaches!
Hakes is one of the smartest people I have ever met. He knows the material front to back. He makes it easy to understand. He genuinely cares about his students. He is very eager to meet with students and help them out if they need it. He wrote the study guide we use in his class so that helps a lot on the tests! Hard material, great professor.
Nice guy that has an amazing amount of knowledge pertaining to economics. He is very helpful and can explain any questions that are asked. Only a total of 200 points in the entire course, so attendance is mandatory in order to understand what is being taught. Hard material, but this is the best professor to explain it.
DAVID HAKES is awesome. He explains the material very well, I understood material with precision. He is passionate about teaching. Best professor I have ever had. BOOM!
I believe Mr. Hakes is the best Macro teacher at UNI. Going to class is essential as his lectures are very detailed and prepare you very well for the next class and out in the business world. Very strict when it comes to test taking, believes everyone of us would cheat if given the chance so he watches you at all times. Definitely recommend taking.
He is by far the most passionate person when it comes to economics, in other words he knows his stuff and knows it well. He often goes off into what the world needs to change (Entertaining). There are very little grades put into the grade book so every point counts. Tests and quizes are difficult but if you study HARD then you should do just fine.
by far the best professor I've had at UNI. Very passionate, fair grader, not a lot of points in the class, but overall great class and professor.
Mr. Hakes knows what he's talking about! He's really passionate about what he teaches. He seems kind of mean at first but he's really not. He just really wants you to do well. Do his study guide!!! Tests are fairly difficult but if you study well you'll get an A or B. Highly recommend this guy if you really want to get something out of the class.
He is a VERY intelligent about economics, even perhaps a genius. The class is actually pretty hard, but I actually really managed to follow him and get interested. It taught me a lot. You MUST go every day, it's all from his notes. Anytime he stresses something, be sure to study it. He seems like a gruff guy but he's nice in person. Awesome teacher
By far my hardest professor this semester! I went in during his office hours to get help with studying and my last quiz and he didn't help at all! He doesn't care about you as a person, so if thats a problem don't take him. He does know his economics but I hated going to class because he made me feel so stupid and worthless.
He knows a lot about economics and is a very good professor. If you ask questions in class, he will elaborate to make sure you understand the information. Don't miss class because a lot of the lecture is on the test. He gives at least a weeks notice to a quiztest. Doing the study guide is very helpful for tests. Highly recommended!
Professor Hakes is my favorite by far and he is amazing at teaching economics. He is clear cut, so there is hardly confusion. He knows how to keep the students listening to him with his lectures. You have to take lots of notes, but they will help a lot. Make sure you do his study guide and actually read the book because he can't cover everything.
Very hard to understand because he rambles on
His lectures are interesting seeing as he is more of a thespian than professor. However, expect to put many study hours into the class. Your grade is composed of 3 quizzes and 3 exams, that's it. The topic is hard (many students have to retake it), but he teaches it well. BUY THE BOOK AND STUDY GUIDE
He doesn't offer extra credit at all! He said that he makes his tests so everyone will pass and that there is only one right answer and all the others are dead wrong and not even close. He makes you feel stupid if you get a question wrong. I'd advise everyone to take a different professor.
Hakes definitely knows his stuff when it comes to Econ. At first he can come off as rude, but its just his sense of humor, and he really does want everyone to do well. Think about your questions before asking them in class because he will make you look like a fool if you ask a question that he finds obvious. Do the study guide if you want to pass!
Tough class but I pulled an A-. Knew I wouldn't find time to read the book so I only bought the study guide which helped a lot for clarification and as something to study besides lecture notes. Attend class - sometimes it feels long but most are pretty interesting. I think all econ classes are hard, but Hakes really is a good professor!
Dr. Hakes is an excellent lecturer and uses lots of examples so concepts are easier to understand. 3 quizzes and 3 tests including the final, so each one impacts your grade a lot. Study guide is a must-have, I used that way more than the textbook.
Dr. Hakes is by far one of my favorite professors. Yes, the class is hard and time consuming, but like Dr. Hakes will tell you, there's two types of people; those who attend class 100% and those who don't. I'd advise you to be one of those who attend 100%. Work with the subject consistently, and you'll pass. Great professor, great lectures.
I really enjoyed his class. He made everything interesting and I would definitely recommend him to a friend.
Cannot stand this man.. He tries to make you feel stupid for not knowing test answers. Does not offer extra credit only 6 grades total and they are all quizzes and tests. If you aren't a good test taker I highly recommend finding someone else.
If you care about economics or WANT to learn, Hakes is your guy. He's the best teacher I've had for any business class so far. I would definitely recommend the study guide. Never used the book once. 2 tests, 1 final, and a few quizzes in between. That's all that makes up your grade.
I would take a Hakes class anytime. Not good for lazy people. Skipping class is a big NO - doesn't take attendance, but the tests are literally based on the things he puts on the board. Pay attention, write what he writes on the board, spend a little time studying. Didn't use the book much, but would have if I missed a class.
Not enough options to get your grade up if you do poorly on a test or quiz because the only thing in the grade book is tests and quizes.
Love love love this man. BUT If you aren't ready to do work, this is not the class for you. Extremely hard grading scale, only 200 total points possible. Extra credit? Not even close. Upside? His lectures are amazing, he can give examples on anything and you will always be engaged.
Tests and quizzes are the only contributors to your grade in this class. If you take good notes and actually do the required study guide you should be fine. Professor Hakes is really passionate about what he is teaching about, and he writes his tests so someone always is able to get a perfect score on them.
All of the potential quiz and test questions have been written on the board at some point so take down everything he writes. USE THE STUDY GUIDE!
Pretty easy class.. Make sure you get the study guide from the book store! He wrote the study guide and he takes test questions from it! Expect to take a lot of notes in class, everything is pretty straight forward!
I loved having Prof. Hakes for Money and Banking. He really knows the topic and makes sure the class is getting his lecture. The tests are difficult but they are mostly concept based so it is not hard to get a good grade if you study.
As long as you show up and take notes, Macroeconomics with Hakes isn't bad. He does a good job of making the topic understandable and makes jokes in class. You'll need the book plus the study guide, but it was not hard to get a good grade.
Great guy. Class was packed with probably close to 200 people. He did call people out for being on their phones. Very good examples.
Professor Hakes can be tough, but he is an awesome professor! He writes all the notes on the board, you just need to follow along. Do not miss a class, or you will fall behind fast. Grades only on quizzes and exams. Go to class and do the study guide and you will be fine. One of the best professors I have had!! Big curve at the end!
He is rude and does not care about any of his students. I was having a problem in the class and he did not want to take the time to help me. He is also very cocky about the study guide that he wrote that goes with the book.
Hakes is the funniest teacher I've had at UNI even though sometimes he is just straight up rude. He only grades quizzes and tests so you can only miss around 20 questions all year to get an A. Get the study guide from somebody who took the class and don't waste money on the book because you never use it.
Loved Hakes was a great guy with a lot to offer. Learned a lot from him and would strongly recommend taking this class with him. He's hilarious too.
Dude is straight up about everything. Buy his study guide from the book store and do it before the test and you'll get an easy A, he takes questions straight from them or just changes them around. Don't even bother with the book, go to class, do the study guide, and the tests and quizzes are easy.
Prof Hakes is awesome. He's always got the most entertaining stories; even my friends who hated econ loved his class. Just do the study guide before taking a quiz or test and you'll get an easy A. Go to all the classes even though attendance isn't mandatory.
He is a very straight forward teacher. You come in sit down and listen to him lecture for every minute of class. He can come across cocky but can occasionally be funny. You must attend class to pass. Don't bother buying the book, I never once used it. Buy the study guide, you will not regret it. Grades only tests and quizzes.
I took Macro with Hakes and he is a great lecturer, but I found his class extremely difficult. I worked very hard in this class and still did poorly. Macro and Micro are known to be tough, but I would not recommend taking it with him. Contrary to popular belief, this is definitely not an easy class. Not to mention only 200 pts possible.
I took Macro with Hakes, and he is one of the best at giving lectures. Don't waste your money on the textbook (unless you really plan on reading it), buy the study guide and DO THE PROBLEMS or you won't pass the class. If you go to his office hours he is willing to help you out, and you'll find he's a pretty nice guy.
David Hakes is honestly a great prof. He definitely knows his stuff about economics! I had Macro with him and I thought the class was very hard. But He is someone who wants you to actually KNOW what you're learning. Before the tests, be able to explain each concept as if you're teaching the class and you'll do fine. One of the best econ profs
I had Hakes for money and banking, the class was very tough for me. Hakes did a very good job teaching the class, it is a very lecture heavy class, usually starts lecturing 1 minute before class and keeps you 1 minute after class. There are only 2 tests, a cumulative final, and 3 quizzes in this class, so every point matters. Do not buy the book
David Hakes is great. He will make you work for your grade, but he is great at explaining things so that you can understand the concepts. His tests are all multiple choice and straightforward, and he keeps classes interesting. Would take again
Hakes was my favorite professor at UNI. Definitely reccomend
Fantastic Lecturer. Everything that he lectures about and writes on the blackboard is on the exams, and you need to understand it, so nothing hidden. The textbook and Online Textbook/study guide for Macroeconomics are great and very interesting. Doing the online study guide and reading the material are essential to do well in the class.
Hakes is the man. He makes the lectures interesting, and even adds some pretty funny jokes here and there. He knows what he's talking about and has his own study guide for the class. If you do the study guide before the test, show up and pay attention to the lectures you'll do just fine.
Hakes is the man. He tells it like it is and doesn't tolerate people acting like idiots. Macro is a tough class but Hakes made the online study guide so make sure you buy it and run through it before the exams. Hakes is super funny as well and it is fun just to watch him lecture.
Hakes is a straight to the point kind of guy. The class consists of 3 tests and 3 quizzes, other than that you take notes from the minute class starts until the minute it ends therefore you have to go to class. If you take good notes, go over the notes frequently, and memorize the equations you will do just fine.
Textbook isn't needed if you attend class. Attendance isn't taken, but you'll quickly get behind if you skip class. Overall does a good job of lecturing, but concepts build quickly upon themselves, so make sure you're always understanding the content. Doesn't tolerate much in class, and seems crass at times but is overall a good guy.
HARD exams
Hakes is a great professor who really knows his stuff. Lecture heavy and need notes to study so go to class! Grade is based on a few quizzes and a few tests.
David is really nice, even though he seems tough. Its 3 tests worth 45 pts, and 3 quizzes worth 15 pts each. Read the book and buy the extra study guide, it really helps. If you miss one lecture you'll be really lost so go to all classes. Ask him if you have a question, he really wants you to understand. His grading scale is pretty generous as well
Hakes, a good guy can be funny, but very strict about everything. His class is very lecture heavy and a lot of reading as well. Make sure you purchase the textbook and use the study guide for the class! If not good luck. Lecture every class, so don't miss out. Final is cumulative, and the class is graded on only quizzes and tests- 200pts grade book
One of the hardest classes I have ever taken. It requires a lot of studying and even if you study a lot the tests are still difficult. You basically have to attend every class because the notes are important. I would not recommend taking macroeconomics with Prof. Hakes.
Hakes is the guy who will tell you his viewpoints, then reference repeatedly that he is a professor of economics as proof that he is right and you are wrong. Very condescending attitude towards students, will tell classes how dumb they are repeatedly. Treats debatable topics as facts. "Everyone nodding?" at least 20 times per class. Terrible class.
Don't take Macroeconomics with Hakes. He is the worst professor ever, I have no idea how he is still employed. His tests and quizzes are extremely vague and his notes are overly complicated, sectioned into many parts. You will be two times ahead of the other classes, trying to retain information at an ungodly rate. If you have him, good luck.
David Hakes is a great professor that expects work from his students. You cannot skip class and you SHOULD read the text book. He gives 3 quizzes 2 tests and a final. Your grade is based on just the tests and quizzes. If you have question he is more than happy to talk. I would recommend his class if you have any interest in economics.
First off: MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A 4 FUNCTION CALCULATOR! He makes that very clear. Hakes makes Macro a little bit easier for people to understand since it's such a hard topic. He only grades quizzes and exams, so make every one count! His exams go along with his lectures, but if you do the study guide, the questions come right from the study guide!
David is a great teacher. Take him at all cost. Great action packed lectures that teach you a ton. The quizzes and test are easy if you spend time studying. The online book has a great study guide that is almost verbatim to the test questions. I ended with an A in the class so its really not that hard if you study.
Teaching was okay. If you take it with him I would suggest attending every class and paying attention to lectures. Also definitely buy mindtap and use the practice tests and problems on there for studying, they help a lot. Make sure to study the content as you go, because there is a lot of concepts to know for each exam.
Amazing Lectures He is very smart. only complaint is that there should be some opportunities for extra credit/points. Also, no curve. EXTREMELY strict about your calculator and phones. I would not recommend if you have test anxiety. Buy the mindtap and use it to study he writes the study guides on there and they are like the test.
would DEFINITELY recommend getting the access code for this course, as he takes specific questions directly from the online self test area through the online book. Go to class or it may be hard to understand the material. And by go to class, be very attentive and listen otherwise you will be lost if you miss a concept. Dry humor but great prof!
Hakess tests were easy, if the content clicks. If it doesnt click right away, there is almost no hope of catching back up. Emailing him doesnt help because all he will do is call you by the wrong name, in an email! I would take another professor at all costs. One of his sayings is that the blackboard is the course. He is not a good teacher!
David Hakes is my favorite teacher at UNI so far! If you want to LEARN he will teach definitely teach you and you WILL learn A LOT! Expect to be in class everyday and be ready to take notes but I love his lectures as he is a fun and interesting presenter. Be sure to do the study guide he gives for each chapter through Mindtap online!
I would highly recommend taking Hakes. He explains the content really well and gives good examples you can connect with. When you go to see him he'll just tell you where you're wrong and how to fix it, and won't be vague or off topic. Make sure you go to class and do the review in the online book.
The first day he said his lecture notes were basically the textbook. The tests and quizzes were all multiple choice and straight forward but you have to really study because they are over so much information at once. You don't need the textbook really but you do need the study guide supplement that comes with it, so you have to buy it anyway.
David Hakes is the worst professor I've ever had. I attended class every day He goes through the chapters way too fast. Class was based off 3 quizzes, 2 exams and a cumulative final. All the tests are so hard and impossible to answer. I don't understand how he was given a 10 year. Buy the mindtap It will help you but be prepared to do a lot of work
Despite what my grade says and a lot of people say about Dr. Hakes, I absolutely loved him as a professor. He made it very clear what he was looking for in his class regarding his quizzes and tests. Attendance is technically not mandatory; however, you MUST show up to pass, how he explains material covered in the book makes a world of a difference.
This class is not only a waste of your time, but it is also a waste of your money. You would be better off taking the class with a different professor. All the quizzes and test (besides the final) are open note and yet he makes it so confusing that it quite impossible to pass. He flies through all the course content and doesn't wait for anyone.
