I had an early morning class. You don't have to come every day, he posts lecture notes online. He has 2 different grading options, which is helpful to those who are awful at testing. Warning: He grades reflection papers hard. He is a very dull lecturer, especially that early.
I thought he was really nice... and kinda looked like a blond viggo mortenson... which made it easy to listen ; ) he had two grading options which was nice and his lecture notes we really easy to use. he was very good about using webct and when i had a problem he was there to help during office hours. i would take another class from him.
I thought this class was interesting and David is a fun teacher who trys to make the class relate to our outside lives. I really like the two grade choices because I don't test well and he understands that about his students. However, he doesn't grade the papers, his TA does. This term our TA is great.
Professor Hall is excruciating when it comes to lectures. I would not recommend him if you want to stay awake in class; however, he does provide two grading options which is nice for those who do not like to test or do not test well. He gets off topic quite a bit and never completes the lectures he has laid out in his powerpoints.
Whoever thinks his lectures are boring watches too much TV. This course made me think more than any I've taken so far. I thought he did a great job of taking on really series subjects and adding in humor here and there. Definitely not easy for an intro course.
Good teacher, gets to the point, and is very straight forward about what he wants from you.
He gets creative in his lectures, really tries to get the students involved and present relatable, interactive material. It's a reasonable amount of work, and extra credit is offered. Always very available and helpful during office hours. LOVED the TA too!! He was a sweetie.
Hall is a great teacher. The content of the class was not the most interesting to me, but he made the material interestiong, not only be his interest, but by the class discussions that he encouraged, and the detailed way in which he answered the questions we had.
Lectures are very slow paced and somewhat unorganized. The material was not at all difficult grasp, but the way it was presented was not very engaging. I can see how some might enjoy the "open forum" type setting, though: Hall would consider even the most bone-headed questions that students posed.
very structured, gives outlines for every class, sticks to lecture but is always open to have discussion. overall great teacher. very attractive.
Professor Hall is very structured and engaging. He is certainly one of the best lecturers I have encountered; I found him to be very easy to follow. Added bonus: he lets you choose between weekly short papers or a midterm and final exam; you can play to your strengths. I wish that he taught other courses...
Professor Hall has a great teaching style. He engaged us in the topics with mental exercises. The lectures were interesting. His TA grades most of the assignments...
Not entirely impressed by this professor. He's very wordy when he answers some questions that only require a simple answer. The TA is great though, explains concepts well and balances him out.
Expect to do a lot of teaching yourself from the book. Hall is nice and often interesting, but his exams and projects have little to do with his lectures and everything to do with studying at home. Again, nice guy, but I don't think he actually enjoys teaching as much as he enjoys the thought of being a teacher.
He is very engaging in his lectures and makes you interested. If you go to class and listen to his lectures, the class is fairly easy. He also gives you a choice of midterm + final or 1-page papers each week. Recommend the papers. They are actually very easy and can be answered straight from lectures.
He presents the material well. He gives two grading options, which is great. He makes the lectures fairly interesting, and for an intro-level large lecture style course it's great. He takes questions during class, which helps a lot. It's not extremely challenging, but you learn a lot.
Very good teacher, can be a bit wordy. Obviously loves psychology. MUST READ BOOK IF YOU HOPE TO DO WELL. He's unable to cover all test topics in class (but what he does cover is explained clearly).
I took his Perception course. Great class! Very challenging material, which I know frustrated some students used to cakewalk psych courses. I felt like Hall made the material accessible without dumbing it down. Engaging style--nice balance between lecture, small group exercises and class discussions. I learned a ton!
knowledgeable, agreeable, kinda boring sometimes. i'd take another class from him.
Awesome class and awesome professor. Focuses on asking the right questions instead of memorization. Completely engaged learning. If you get a chance to take this class I encourage you to do so.
Very easy to follow. He has two grading options to choose from (weekly papers or a midterm and final) which I thought was great because I hate writing papers. Lecture notes are posted online so you don't have to come to class everyday. I would take a class of his again, especially if he offered the same grading options.
This class is thorough, clear, sometimes fun. I appreciate that Hall is young and VERY devoted to the material, happy to talk at length about any subject--but that's also my only complaint: he doesn't know how to be brief. He's so longwinded it hurts sometimes. Other than that, awesome guy. Do the paper option! The papers are easy.
Nice guy, just would run on forever on some topic and run out of time for the other graded topics within the class. Very frustraiting. Choose the Paper option, i wish i did.
His lectures are fairly interesting, however you don't need to show up. The book has everything you need and he doesn't venture from the chapters. I myself didn't care for his teaching habits, although others might.
Choose the paper option! He seems very dry and unapproachable during his lectures but during his office hours he is very understanding and helpful. His lecture slides are straight from the text, so know it inside and out. Overall, average class, nice professor, but very dry and a little boring.
Wonderful lecturer, learned a lot just by attending classes. Gave timed variable quizzes, but they are cinch if you attend the classes. Would definitely take another class from him! Very approachable, both in class and during office hours.
He is one of the best teachers at PSU - hands down. He makes the material applicable to real life. He is humble, funny, and crystal clear on expectations. One hint - do not bother with the book. I took his course accelerated over the summer, didn't use the book for studying at all and nailed an A. I wish I could take more classes from him!
Professor Hall follows a lecture format for his classes, but he knows how to make his lectures interesting. I truly enjoyed his class. He's the only psychology professor that I have enjoyed thus far at PSU!
i disagree with the comment on 8/9/11, i was in the same class during the summer and its not hard at all! all you do is a brain diagram, random quizzes but if you just study the slides you'll do just fine trust me, a chapter review and closing thoughts which are less than a page each! he was very informative and easy to understand! take his class:)
Perception is a difficult class. Dr. Hall makes it accessible and interesting with a mix-methods style of teaching. We chose what kind of final to take individually, so we could highlight our own skills. He expects a lot of students, but by no means an unreasonable amount. If you're interested in the topic I highly recommend him as an instructor.
It's ridiculous to be graded down if you arrive late to class. It's not high school! How does an assignment that is literally 4 minutes late deserve to be graded down 10% when it's a perfect score to begin with?
David is impersonal but is a great prof in terms of how much he knows. He gives you two options in how you can be graded, either write papers or take tests ( I heard tests are hard). I did the papers they were decent. He doesn't take roll but pays attention to lateness. The biggest project is the brain diagram which I found hard.
If you have the option to take the mid term or final, OR do papers for every chapter, DO THE PAPERS! I attended every class & did miserably on the mid term. The lectures are so so, most students leave after there first half of class. He is incredibly knowledgeable so thats wonderful but psy 200 isn't the most fascinating so i can't blame him.
He offers the choice between weekly chapter papers or taking a midterm/final. I chose the test option and kind of regret it. I didn't do so hot on the midterm. The lectures are kind of boring and many people leave half way through but he does know what he is talking about which is good.
He is very long winded in his lectures, and I eventually stopped going because he wouldn't even get through all of his slides. I spent class time in the library reading the textbook. His tests are difficult and required a lot of studying. If you are able to avoid his class, I would recommend it.
He seems rushed, finally braindead! His lectures are mighty dull, really not passionate.
Great teacher, and not bad at all to look at as well. Very helpful in answering questions. The best examples and activities I've ever had in a class. I learned so so so so so much. Tests were hard, but a great challenge if learning is what you want out of a college class.
I really enjoyed Dr. Hall's class. He included a few hands on activities that really helped me understand the material. His test questions are very clear and concise with the lecture material. Attendance is not taken but GO TO CLASS!
Choose option 2 and do the papers instead of taking the tests.
I wrote the weekly reflection papers instead of taking the exams. The TA he had this term was a fairly tough grader, but I still ended up with an A. He is very passionate about the subject, but his lectures can be boring at times. Doesn't always cover all the material from the notes (online) in class. The brain diagram was the hardest part.
I struggled in this class! I took option number 1 which is taking two test through out the term that are worth 60% of your grade. My advice is worship what he says in class because it is most likely gonna be on the test. He is definitely not helpful at answer questions.
This class is quite difficult and I don't recommend it unless you are really interested in the subject matter which is dense.
I would not recommend this teacher. Although the material was interesting, he is an extremely hard grader. The class requires attendance, weekly homework that can take hours, a final, a trip to the museum, as well as a portfolio at the end. Although at night, this is not a class designed for a full-time working student.
I LOVE this guy. He showed such an interest in the subject which made ME interested in it. He's incredibly smart and really knows his stuff. Go to class, listen to his lectures and you'll do well. Ask questions too! He's really good at clearing anything up that may be confusing.
Loved this teacher. Class was extremely interesting and he was very passionate about the topic. Quizzes were easy if you went to class and paid attention. He's a very fair grader. I'd definitely take his class again.
BEST.TEACHER.EVER. I absolutely adore this professor. He is hilarious, uses a lot of examples, and really loves psychology. I would recommend taking his class. Even though attendance isn't necessarily mandatory, I would recommend coming to class because it is extremely interesting and more fun than reading the textbook.
I took David about a year ago for psychology 200. Not only were his lectures interesting but he also gave students the option of writing weekly papers or taking a midterm and final. I wrote the weekly papers and I can tell you right now that this is the way to go! Easy A!
I found his class to be horribly structured. You have to read the chapter, take quiz and THEN you have lecture about the chapter. For some students this is just NOT ideal as we all learn differently. Also, he doesn't let you see what you got wrong on quiz unless you go to his office & for the working people with families, that's just not possible!
As a 200 level class i would not recommend this class. He requires you to take quizes on the chapters before the actual lesson plan. he does not give any reviews for any midterm or final exam. He is not very clear or helpful on a personal level. I would not recommend this to anyone who is looking for an intro class to psy
I really enjoyed taking Psych 204 with David Hall! How well you do in the class is completely up to you. Attendance isn't mandatory, but he rewards students that go to class. He is passionate and very clear. As long as you do your reading, easy class. Grade is basically based on online quizzes and midterms/finals. Loved the teacher!
I was in his psych 204 class and the only complaint I have is the fact that he took away our ability to see what we got wrong on the online quizzes. You would have to go in during office hours. I had a late lecture and we got moved into the movie theatre! There are extra credit opportunities and random freebie points for coming to class.
It's a challenge to make such a broad survey class interesting and Hall rises to it with use of examples, personal experience and class participation. Yes there is a lot of material, his study guides tell you exactly what to study. Pro tip: he ONLY tests on lectures. You won't need the text other than a short topic review paper. Borrow it.
He is amazingly good at keeping people engaged! Perception is a tough class that ends up being more like a biology class than psychology but even for someone like me with ADHD this teacher kept me engaged. He does hands on learning every single class! I highly recommend him!
His lectures are very clear, he has a very relaxed aura, and he makes psychology fun to learn. Very cool teacher!
He obviously cares a lot about the subjects he teaches, and is very knowledgeable. He's super nice. He is a stickler with grading essays, and big on his favorite "key words". You get to take the quizzes three times each, to get the best score possible. You have to talk to other students a lot.
Not very helpful
Ecopsychology Class. He was very knowledgeable, but class is more tree-hugging than psychology based. Really harsh grader. Class discussions dragged on without staying on topic. Weekly journal, volunteer work, field trip, weekly reflections, two exams, mandatory attendance, final paper, and a self eval that is worth the grade you give yourself.
Tests on lectures: pop quizzes make up half your grade, so go to class. Although lectures are okay (not very engaging), expectations for his brain diagram assign is nil. No rubrics are provided so you can easily get badly graded, even for your self evaluation! Don't be surprised if you ask a question in class and it doesn't get answered. At all.
Hands down the most organized teacher I have had in my entire college career. If you listen closely, take notes, and watch his online videos closely, you can obtain many questions that you'll see on future exams. Dr. Hall is brilliant in how he lays out his lectures. Exams are tough, no study guides are provided, go to class!
My main complaint about David is that he's not as open to commentary in a field that has no black and white. My grade was a B instead of an A because he thought I hadn't submitted my work on time, but that was impossible as it closed submission by the deadline, which would've prevented me from turning it in. I emailed him and it didn't matter.
Dr. Hall is a clear and patient lecturer who gives you all the tools you need to do well in the class. He offers extra credit opportunities for researching questions not covered in class. You have to work for your grade and demonstrate that you understand the material, including completing several small assignments and at least skimming the book.
Perception is one of the best course at PSU, taught by David. His passion for the content is inspiring and his amazing lectures keeps you engaged and you won't regret going to class. Gives great examples and explain well on difficult concepts. If you skip class and only read the powerpoints, expect to not pass. His lectures are life savers.
This class changed the way I see the world. Its amazing! Professor Hall is clear about what he looks for in answers; there's no inconsistency at all. If you go to his lectures, you'll most likely get an A. There's no way you won't understand the material if you attend lectures, he's very detail oriented. I could take his courses every term.
David Hall's class in Perception and Sensation is unlike any other psychology course at PSU. He teaches the scientific aspect of what humans perceive;through lectures on vision, taste, smell, hearing, and touch. Valuable insight, but lots of online quizes & homework. Took this class for pnop and ended up with a B- and existential crisis, worth it.
I took 350 to learn new theories on sustainability through indigeneity. The first few classes were interesting, but the last 7 weeks were nothing but glorifying the "noble savage" and so much crunchiness it was like swimming in granola. The class is discussion based, but if you voice alternate theories you get (very gently) shut down.
Dr. Hall is a very engaging professor. This is my first experience with a psych class and his teaching style is very helpful and he presents the material in a manner that makes it very easy to understand. Easy A as long as you show up and read the syllabus.
Professor Hall is hands down one of the best professors I've had while attending PSU. He approaches teaching from multiple angles, not relying solely on lecturing, but rather encouraging student participation through various exercises and reflections. Very organized, clear expectations, and a fair grader. Wish I could take more classes from David.
Cool Guy, Lots of Articles to read, Easy Activities
Biology sprinkled with psychology, this is not a class that you will be able to fall asleep in or play on your phone. No midterm. Online quizzes due at end of term. (Don't wait that long, They take serious time!) Homework assignment due each week. Final is anatomic labelling and essays. Dr. Hall is quick and thorough with feedback. Money well spent
Dr. Hall knows what he is talking about. This is not a psychology class, however. It's more an anatomyphilosophy kind of gig. Tuck your phone away. Try it, you'll like it. Get your money's worth for once at PSU.
My primary major is bio. This class set the stage for my success in neurophysiology and raised the bar for my expectations in all future psych classes. Hall is rigorous, to a degree which is (sadly) not seen in many psych classes at PSU. Consider this an antechamber to hard science, which is far less forgiving. If you liked this, take Griesar next!
Overall he's a good instructor. His lectures are interesting though his power points are poor. His homework was a problem. There were two coloring assignments where we had to draw the brain and match descriptions to terms. All good except he graded on "perceived effort" in our drawings and was picky about placement. I lost respect for him for it.
I took this class as a requirement for my major and with no particular interest in the subject. Although it was interesting learning about how the brain works, this class was awful. Really tough to sit through the lectures without dozing off. David is a tough grader when it comes to tests and the quizzes are rough with confusing and unclear q's.
I took Psychology as a Natural Science with Hall. He is a nice guy, a bit boring, but nice regardless. His tests are not tough at all. You get to make a flashcard with notes you can bring to his tests. His lectures are kind of boring but he gets the class to participate. I only took 201 with him so I have no idea what he's like in 300+
I took Psych as a social science, and it was great. Hall does a great job of covering a ton of important material in a limited amount of time. The class is what you make of it, if you enjoy psychology (even a little) then you are going to like this class. Even though you can read all the slides online, go to class and get them explained in detail.
I had a difficult time with his class because of how much content was crammed into such a short time and there being 150 students in the class. Luckily there were 2 TA's and one of them specifically seemed to make more of an effort to be accessible to help me succeed than my teacher. Would not take another of his classes again.
Quizzes: Straightforward, is given several chances to get questions right Exams: Allows single page, handwritten notes Assignments: Two coloring assignments, quite strict on where parts of the brain is located Office Hours: one-on-one, happy to discuss about things outside of the lecture Textbook: about 30 pages a chapter, all covered in a week
David is particularly passionate about this area and it really shows. With that said, if you do not already find yourself particularly interested in how we impact our environment and vice versa, this class is not for you. The readings assigned were insightful at first but now they all just sound the same and its gotten quite boring.
David Hall is an exceptional teacher. I thoroughly enjoyed his class and appreciated that he put all of the slides from his PowerPoint on D2L. I never had to take notes, so I could just sit back and listen. Whenever something wasn't covered in as much detail in class, he always made sure to post follow-ups on D2L for more clarification.
I took his sleep and dreams class and he would get mad when we did not have discussion topics he wanted, yet he refused to at least give us a topic to come prepared with. He had no agenda and took 6 weeks to set up interest groups which gave us 2 weeks to research and create projects for presenting. I learned nothing from this class.
He regurgitates the information in the textbook each lecture. On the coloring assignment, he/his TA's were not clear about WHERE to turn in the assignment once class started and points were taken off for no reason. The TA's don't do anything but check attendance (it isn't required that you attend but you get potential extra credit if you do). :(
Even in a somewhat large class, Hall still reached me and taught me a lot. He really inspires learning rather than just memorization. Going to class is important. Book was useless imo. No HW besides 10 question quizzes (you get 3 chances, too) and 2 coloring assignments(drawing the brain, labeling). Lots of learning, low work load. Great teacher!
Dr. Hall is amazing, he clearly understands what he is teaching and cares about the subject. The course is discussion based and requires you to attend class prepared (i.e. read the assigned journals/articles) and participate in discussions.
Good teacher, class was interesting and he was pretty chill.
If you want to have a teacher that is boring and not engaging at all, go ahead and have David Hall as your professor. He is knowledgeable, but sort of boring. His tests are very hard so make sure you study the slides, textbook, and lecture notes!
Professor Hall knows his stuff. If you're interested in the subject matter you'll likely enjoy this course. The classes are lecture heavy, but he's a fairly engaging speaker and answers questions fully. You will have to read a lot out of class but like I said, if you like the subject, it won't hard. He is professional and an overall good teacher.
Dr. Hall is fine but I didnt feel like I learned as much as I couldve in his class. He isnt bad, but isnt someone Id recommend to people.
Mega yawn. The second half of the course is more interesting, but it's difficult to stay engaged with the lull of his monotone voice. It could be worse, it's not completely monotone. I made the mistake of taking the four-hour lecture once a week and this probably contributed to how difficult it was to stay awake. Exams are on a middle school level.
Spends too much time on stupid stuff in class, like INSTRUCTIONS on how to participate and the rules of his 'games.' Talks more about stuff that isn't important, that's why he has you read "Follow up thoughts" on an already 4 hour class. If he actually took his time lecturing important things, he wouldn't have to upload youtube videos about it.
David Hall is fantastic facilitator and holds space for students to share ideas safely. He encourages a deep understanding through reading, experience, and dialogue. More classes should be structured like this. How much he cares really shows through class dialogue and class readings.
Im very happy I took this class with him. Hes an incredible professor with a deep passion for his field, super good at teaching. Visit his office hours with anything youre having trouble with in class and hell provide you in depth help
David Hall is an amazing facilitator and I would take any class he teaches. To get 30+ students to read the material and create dialogue is no easy task. Lots of reading but it's manageable. Mostly "discussion" based off reading. 1 term paper that he creates prompts for. A volunteer project. It's not so bad once you do it. This is an amazing class
