He teaches like he's acting in a play. Tough marker.
animated to say the least
cool suspenders
Crazy as a loon! But I enjoy his class. Take it!
Funny guy, keeps class exciting, tough marker though...I'd recommend this prof
A wildman! Funny AND interesting. Not your run-of-the-mill English prof.
Very inspiring and encouraging! A wonderful english prof!
Nuts. But in a good way.
one of the best profs at the school
He is a really good professor for this course
excellent course with excellent instruction, very helpful, easy to speak to
He did much more than teach english.
easy to get along with and marks fairly

Hillarious and spontaneous.
Let's just say I registered with him for next semester. Fantastic man.

EXCELLENT!!!! If you can get him for a course, get him!!!!!!!!!!!
Excellent Prof!! A stand up comedian with a PhD!! Excellent Lectures.
A wild ride ...
The best teacher ever-- He acts out the stories!
As eccentric as all get out but one of the better profs in the Department. Makes the others look dead in comparison!
One of the better profs in the department, I am sure. I think that he is an excellent guy-very funny. He even lets you choose what you want to write. He marks fair-not easily, but you know that the work that you put into it reflects the mark that you get
Cool man. I recommend him.
Wicked teacher! I would recommend him for any course!!
A great teacher and a great man! Really fair grading and a very fun prof.
great prof...what more can i say?!
The best English teacher I've evr had. His lectures are interesting and entertaining at the same time such that you learn without even realizing it. Definately worth your time to take his class.
BEST PROF AT MUN!!! I'll do a course just because he is teaching it!! Highly recommended!!
EXCELLENT PROF !!!! HIGHLY RECOMMEND HIM! HE IS A FAIR GRADER AND REALLY MAKES U UNDERSTAND WHAT U ARE READING AND THERFORE U CAN WRITE SO MUCH! SOMETHIMES TO MUCH ..LOL.. BOTTOM LINE TAKE HIS CLASS
This guy is the best prof i have had yet!! he is so funny and actually made an english class fun to go to. you never know what to expect from him becasue of his sense of humor. i highly recommend you take one of his courses. very good marker
excellent job david - #1
EXCELLENT TEACHER!!! BEST ENGLISH TEACHER I HAVE EVR HAD ...NO JOKE. TAKE HIS CLASS!!!
Absolutly the best teacher ever and I would recommend anyone taking English to try and get Dr. David Hallett as their professor. You are the BEST !!!
The most wonderful professor ever! Gave me confidence, took the time to know everyone in the class, and is simply a genuine guy.
if you get him, you will have a good term. he marks fairly, but since he is so entertaining, you remember the material he teaches. would recommend him to anyone.
Excellent Prof
Quite entertaining ... extremely clear with respect to student requirements.
Excellent teacher. Very funny, give lots of choice and lots of information. Try to get him if you can.
Great Prof!!! Seems to be easy but its simply because he makes you understand what he is teaching. Lots of energy, VERY helpful, checks his email hourly. The only 1st level english prof that realizes its 1st level. Great JOB!!!!!!!!
David Hallet was excellent, though if you don't make yourself stand out in class, you won't get an A. Definitely not hot. Also, if he has to talk about the weather, you are not gettin out of class a second early
A very good professor.
Excellent proff especially with his accents/
Very entertaining, makes english fun. Some of the highest marks I've ever got in english (even in high school) was in his class. He knows how to get the material across without being boring.
He was an excellent teacher. Fair in his markings and clear in his directions. He was a little boring though, and because he had all of his lecture notes online I skipped most classes. I would recommend him to others as he does have a good sense of humor, despite the boring material he has to cover.
Best english course i ever did. he made the course interesting and his impressions are priceless. i recommend him.
this prof is great. He made english 2002 (rgreek tragedies) one of the funniest courses ever! he has this amazing skill for making things relative to something we could understand and he he's very concise in giving 'helpful hints' ... not to mention very detailed notes.
Good Prof, but a bit much to take at the crack of dawn. He's REALLY enthusastic. And I mean that. I can't agree with all of his play choices but a good course overall, just wish I had made it to more of it. If it's early - think again, there might not be enough motivation in plays alone to get you to campus.
Fantastic prof! Worked very hard to help us in anyway he could. Hilarious and very theatrical. Plays came to life as he acted them out in all different accents. I would love to see him on stage! I definitely reccomend his class.
Fantastic prof, great depth of knowledge, profound - work hard to get into his class if you have the opportunity. Thoroughly enjoyable as a prof, fascinating as a human being over a pint of beer. One of my favourites.
Awesome. Excellent prof.
Intriging in speech. Dosen't sugar coat or give someone else's opinion, has original ideas and gets to the point. Dedicated, demanding respect, but respects students. Organized and detailled in approach. Often uses Theatrical techniques to spike interest, exclusively real. Highly recommended.
Excellent Prof. Get into his class if you can. He's somewhat of a hard marker but it only prepares you for the next courses you will take. He's very thorough and livens up the class a lot.
Really enthuiastic and knowledgeable!

Quality instruction. Superior intellect. Prime organization. Engaging presentation. Creditable dedication. First-class respect.Excellence. That's hot;)
You go, Dave! A great prof!
Wow. The best experience I have ever had in a class. By far, Dr. Hallett is my favourite teacher of all time. He knows what he is doing, and while he may mark a little hard he makes you want to learn, his teaching makes you want to come to class, just to listen to him speak. An amazing man, an amazing teacher.
wonderful prof, wonderful class. This man is amazing, he keeps the class awake and interested. He is very helpful and clear on what he wants, and he is not a hard marker when you make the effort. Very easy to get along with and very funny!!! YOU MUST TAKE HIS CLASS!!!!
Took the distance course, he is an A+ prof. Extremly helpful and clear on what he expects. Essays are marked so you know EVERY detail you could possibly improve on in the future. Marks very fairly, assuming students actually read the required books. Gives plenty of essay topic choices both for term papers and exams.
Very much a great, enthusiastic prof. I wish he taught more courses, actually. His lectures are like well-rehersed performances and his theatre background really shows there. Good marker and very approachable.
This prof was amazing, very easy, very fun!!! He was very easy to talk to and an easy marker. You have to take his class if you get the chance!!!!
Great prof!Actually cares about his students! Will help no questions asked.Very friendly, and kind. His drama background is very entertaining, does different voices for certain characters. I would certainly take a class with him again!
an awesome prof! perfect and exactly what this course needs! i think without his elaborate explanations and theatrical voices to differentiate between characters in novels the course would be boring. HIGHLY recommend him, he keeps you interested, very fair marker and he makes things easy to understand. Any devoted student could pass his course.
AMAZING! Wish all profs could be as interesting and organized. Uses emails and his website a lot, making it very easy for communication. He definitely is a 10!!!
amazing prof! he makes english fun and ive never liked english in my life. he gets really involved in teaching and performs plays by himself with different accents. very good explanation of topics and is a really fair marker! attending class is definitely a plus because you really understand the texts. really funny! RECOMMEND THIS PROFESSOR!!
I appreciate his marking strategy. He wasn't expecting a new york bestselling author's writing level for a second level english course, unlike profs like Sommerton and Ingersoll whom you can work your A@# off for and accomplish a full 40% on your essay.
This is a really amazing prof ! He is extremly fair when it comes to marking and gives really great feedback on essays. He is really theatrical in class so it makes it interesting and easy to understand! Also uses his website well, and responds to questions on email fairly quickly :) Great Prof !
Best-prof-ever. The guy was very fair, made his classes interesting, was very clear and concise. What more would you want?
Great Teacher. Lets you take outlines into test. Trys to make boring english into something everyone looks forward to coming to. highly recommended
he would help you in any way, shape or form. and very funny and interesting prof. Get This Prof!!!
He's very helpful and will help you in any way shape or form. He's also very friendly and understanding when it comes to sickness, etc. He's a very fair marker, and offers lots of constructive feedback. he makes it easier for you to pick up your mark and do well in the course.
AMAZING, never was interested in english until now, my best mark in university so far. very far marker, doesnt expect you to be a novelist and leaves great feedback on how to improve. is a great help! and lets you know the exam before you write it, amazing, amazing, amazing!! get him if you can!!
Very good prof! highly entertaining and theatrical in his lessons. Makes the class enjoyable. Fair marker with helpful feedback. Allows outlines for in class essays. you definitely want this prof!!
Really understanding.
David Hallett is a friendly and approachable professor who provides excellent feedback. He is a little bit slow getting marks back to you but extends deadlines often which can be great. He allowed my class to provide him with out thesis statements for an essay and he then evaluated their effectiveness. He is a great professor who cares.
He's a great professor overall. Although he seemed a little disorganized overall, he provides excellent feedback on papers to help you become a better writer. He is absolutely hillarious to talk to and really knows his stuff. He marks fairly and is not pretentious like most English professors I've encountered. I recommend him for any English course
Brilliant prof. Even if you don't care about English lit, you will after this course. Rearranged my school year to attend his courses. Exceptional - engaged, loves what he does, highly insightful. One of my top three profs from 35+ courses taken.
Amazing prof. It is obvious that he loves what he teaches and focuses on literature that will engage the entire class. Fair when it comes to grading, he makes it clear what he wants and makes it easy for you to give him exactly that. I truly enjoy going to his lectures, and he completely changed my opinion of studying english.
Dr. Hallett was a great guy, fair marker and gives out good feedback on exams. I however didn't like the course, not because of him, but simply because I don't like English Literature, thus why I am a science major... I would recommend this class.
Such an amazing prof! I would recommend him to anyone for any English course. He really knows what he's talking about and is absolutely hilarious. I planned my entire schedule around his class next semester. Such a great prof! Can't say it enough.
Useless prof, had 5 essays and received the exact same mark on each. Same thing happened to multiple people in the class. Lectures are boring and no feedback given on any work. Wouldn't recommend.
Great prof who knows his material and what he is talking about. About average grader, keeps his classes energetic! I would absoultely take him again. And I would reccommend him to anyone taking English :)
Such a great prof! Explains everything well and very approachable if you need any help. Definitely recommend him!
Very nice professor, tries to keep the class entertained. Unfortunately it put me to sleep. He marks fair but does not give a lot of feedback, you get 7/10 - great usage of direct support, but minor usage errors.. lose 30 percent for minor errors? doesn't make a whole lot of sense
I have no idea why this man has a good rating. The course D2L site is a mess, full of conflicting/incorrect information, his lectures are nothing short of miserable (also useless) and his novels choices make me want to jump out of the nearest window while reading. Had to drop the course, never want to see this man again.
Does not encourage ANY class discussion whatsoever. Lectures are just him explaining the plot without any analysis or deeper reading. He barely gives feedback on essays, and when he does it's entirely unhelpful. His book selection was mostly awful and not engaging. I am an English major who loves the subject, but I was steered wrong with this man.
He is an awesome prof! I had him for 1010 and 1011. very helpful and will always give you feedback. Even before your essays are due you can go to his office and he will help you with it and tell you what not to have and how to make it better. I recommend to get in his class!!
Awesome prof who knows his stuff! I was a bit intimidated at first because it looked like a lot of work, but the schedule was well organized with excellent discussions (which can be hit or miss in online courses). Definitely recommend
Single best professor I had in six years through two degrees. Thoroughly engaging, extremely well read, challenging and listens to challenges back.
Not only is he a sweetheart, he's an amazing teacher! He is so funny, incredibly helpful, and even though there isn't much in terms of class participation, you still leave each class filled with lots of English knowledge!
His 75 minute lectures require a lot of coffee. He rambles a lot and doesn't engage with the class very much. I found it took him over 15 minutes to start the lecture which was annoying. He can be funny at times which is refreshing after listening to him ramble for 20 minutes.
One of the best instructors I have come across at MUN. Extremely friendly with outstanding knowledge on what he teaches! If you take a course with him, you would love him!
Taken for English 1080 - He's hilarious and sometimes gets off track but ultimately is very clear in what he wants in essays and the only homework assigned besides review are short readings in the text. His notes ARE posted on D2L but are sort of messy so attending class will get you a better mark!
I love David Hallett!! One of the best profs I have ever had! I had him for English 1102, English 2002, and English 3200! He was amazing for all three! If you like theatrical teachers, he is the best there is! He tests what he teaches and grades more than fair! I ended with B+ in two courses and an A in the other! TAKE HIS CLASS!
Professor Hallett was a great prof! Took him for english online over the summer, had an essay due every couple of weeks but was very clear on what was expected.
One of my favorite professors and I will make an effort to take another one of his classes
Excellent professor, he was always looking to help you out and explain things where need be.
David Hallett is excellent. He tries to keep you entertained but his lectures are very long and boring. He rambles on for the whole lecture. He is a very nice man who wants students to succeed. Grading was fairly good for an university english course and the final was easy. I would highly recommend you take this prof.
Professor Hallett is an incredible prof. Extremely motivated and dramatic in his teaching which shows he loves it and it keeps you interested. Selections he chose are good. Beware of online discussion posts every week though, just participation though. I found his grading fair and clear. If you put work in to it, you'll like it
David was a great professor for my first english course at MUN. He was clear in what he wanted, not too tough of a grader and gave a lot of advice and feedback if you went looking for it! His lectures were kind of boring, he rambled a lot. Online discussions are worth 10% of the grade, don't miss out on easy marks!! Overall a great course.
Dr. Hallett is AWESOME, a great dramatic prof whose love for what he does bursts through his lectures. Great prof, great guy. Would ABSOLUTELY recommend to take again
You can buy the text that he has chosen or simply find the material readily online. Didn't have to overspend to get all the text I needed!
David Hallett was one of my favourite professors this semester. He is willing to help, gives extensions when you need them, and is overall a very nice man. His grading is very fair, and you can easily get an A in the course if you put the effort in. The novels he chose were interesting and accessible.
amazing prof. very clear and fair grading, unlike most english profs. long lectures but they give everything you need to write your essay assignments. lots of opportunities for free marks. helpful and understanding. one open-book in-class assignment, all others are take-home. final exam is fairly straightforward if you are prepared.
Great prof. Gives feedback on all papers and assignments. Answers e-mails quickly. Gives you lots of choice in assignment questions.
Excellent prof. Gives lots of feedback and very quick to answer emails. Gives lot of options for essay topics. Picks good books to read.
David is such a great and caring prof, he would go out of his way to facilitate students in learning and improving in the course. I do recommand him!!
Great prof! I would recommend him to anyone.
David is really chill and laid-back. Answers questions as quick as he can and is willing to help. Lots of essays but theres other evaluations too.
I thought David was a good prof, but I HATED the essay topics he gave to write about. He is very laid back about deadlines and extensions
David is one of the best profs I've had at MUN. He was very clear about what he expected from us, he taught the material with a nice twist (adding anecdotes where he could), and he totally agreed that exams were dumb and pointless but he still gave them because he had to haha. I would definitely take a course with him again!
Best prof I've ever had. English is not my strongest course but I came out of his class with my highest mark from MUN yet. So nice and easy to get a hold of. Really caring and gives a lot of feedback. I took this course online and it was really great. He schedules things out nicely and picks interesting novels. Highly recommend!
Makes every class interesting, does funny accents and always wonders about things out loud before class. He also always asks before continuing on to a different subject if anyone has any questions. He is a very compassionate professor and is not strict on deadlines. Would definitely recommend.
Most personable prof in Mun, made my year a lot happier... I had him for 1080 and passed but I was sick the next time i had him, he completely understood and was gracious with assignment due dates.. even though I basically dropped all but one of my courses with a doctor's note he was always understanding. Wouldn't have any other prof for enlgish!
Such a fantastic prof! Really makes learning english easier with his laid-back approach and his ability to adapt to you and your needs.
The two who gave bad feedback to him probably never came to class. This Professor should be given an award "Professor of the Year" every 365 days. Like seriously, he is "David the greatest"!
David Hallett is an excellent professor! Throughout high school, I was lucky to get a 65 in English but the first grade I got from Hallett on a rough draft was 80%, 4/5! I would literally take another class with him just because of how wonderful he is. He is genuinely interested getting to know his students as well.
Hallett is an overall good professor. He has clear grading criteria and, as long as your try, you should be able to get an easy A. However, having taken him online, I found his "lectures" were rambly and sometimes unnecessary and makes you lose focus on the main idea. This is the only negative comment I have about Dr. Hallett.
David Hallett has been one of my favourite profs by far. I took his 1080 course online, and it was really easy. He give you a lot of choice in your writing, which made the course interesting and quite frankly, fun. He is a fair grader, and leaves you with great feedback which is always helpful to see where you may have went wrong. Highly recommend!
David Hallett is a very relaxed prof when it comes to deadlines and he understands that his class isn't the only one you're taking. I would recommend taking his first year english classes.
This was a pretty easy course with good reading choices. There were 3 essays, weekly discussions and the final. Good course overall and he was pretty laid back when it came to deadlines.
Definitely my favorite professor! I wish I had taken the course in-class instead of online because I'm sure his lectures would have been amazing! But, the online course was awesome and Dr. Hallett was very clear on his expectations for assignments and activities. Really great course, really great professor!
He's an incredible professor. He posts very detailed writing materials to help you tune your writing skills. The questions he posts for the readings helps you read texts critically. I'm very taken aback by my sheer luck of having such a great professor to take English with at MUN!
Such a great prof. Always answers emails, gives good critiques and genuinely helps you do well. I'm doing his CRW Telling Stories course online and am doing well.
Such a nice professor! Understands that his course is only one part of a student's life and will give extensions if you need one! Posts all of the notes AND readings online so you don't need to buy a book. Easy to get in contact with as well!
I have taken Dave Hallett for four of my English courses for my minor. He was fantastic both online and in class. His material is interesting, and so is he. He is super easy to talk with outside of class, and responds to emails very quickly. He is by far one of the best English professors in the faculty. If you can take his course(s), do it!
Dr. Hallett is a great prof. Extremely knowledgeable and presents a great set of notes and annotations about all literature analyzed in class. Lectures are interesting and enthusiastic but not mandatory. Easy grader and very forgiving if you put in an honest effort.
super disorganized online course, so many things were missing and confusing. nothing was straightforward more of a guessing game of what he wanted. But i will say he is very good at answering to emails as i had so many questions and a good grader and this has been a hard semester with SOE.
This was a bad semester in general with COVID-19 & Snowmageddon, but that took place a little later in the semester. With only ONE MONTH left of school, our class had received NO grades, he was late responding to important emails, and gave flakey answers. He's ok if you want it as an extra credit. If you actually want to learn, I do not recommend!
The semester was interrupted quite a bit but Dr. Hallett did not make anything very clear. Due dates were used from past fall semesters and any attempt to clarify these dates resulted in a vague answer or no reply at all. Very easy class but very frustrating communication from the prof which made it stressful.
This is my second time having Professor Hallett as a teacher, and both times have been fantastic. In light of the pandemic he understands the difficulties us students can have in adjusting to this online only distant learning environment. He's quick to answer emails and has given me great feedback throughout the course. A flexible and caring prof.
Dr. Hallett was a great professor for the course, I'd take it 100 times if I had to
Ive never enjoyed an English class in my life but Dr Hallett made it super fun, I would definitely recommend him to anyone! He was super accessible outside class and was, in my opinion, a very fair grader. He also gave list of opportunities for easy marks, and there was options of which assignments you could chose to do. Overall, great prof!
Best Prof Ive had at MUN, his feedback is very helpful. Hes a fair grader, and a great lecturer. Very understanding during the Pandemic.
I love Dr. Hallett! He genuinely cares about his students' success and gives lots of opportunities to boost your grades! His lectures are always interesting and engaging and your writing will definitely improve over the course!
Dr Hallett was a phenomenal english teacher. I had him for online class and often felt he was always trying to connect with the class and learn more about us all personally. Responds to emails fast and isnt a tough grader. Would definitely take this class again
He is my fav.
Awesome Prof!!
Dr. Hallett is very specific on his feedback. He responds to emails very fast and also helps in every way he can. He is also very clear on his grading and you can get good grades from focusing on what he has asked. The best professor I have seen so far.
I don't often write reviews on teachers but Im so impressed with Dr. Hallett that I thought he deserved a good review. I rated him as an easyish grader because Im personally good with writing essays. He's a fair grader but picky like most English profs. He will go out of his way to ensure you get a good grade & very approachable. I recommend him!
I had a pretty good experience with him, he came across as a pretty genuine professor. His grading was a little rough and certain aspects of his feedback did not make much sense, however, he has made us aware of some pretty big issues in his personal life so I put it off to an insane amount of stress he has on his back. Definitely would recommend!
He is the greatest Prof you will ever come across. He's fast at replying to emails and he really cares about his students. This is a great course. 100% would recommend!
He truly cares about students' success and is openly accepting of the LGBTQ community. David is a theatric person, so be prepared for many mini-performances during class especially when he is reading pieces of work. Picky grading is to be expected from English professors, but I've definitely expected worse coming into university!
The lectures are not always exactly relevant to the assignments therefore if you skip them you will still do fine on the assignments that are laid out in bright space. He is funny and will give you feedback if you seek it out. He is an averagely hard marker compared to high school teachers but overall he is a good prof!
He was an amazing teacher, gave you plenty of time to do essay's and his classes were not mandatory. You did have to buy all the textbooks. Don't expect to get over a 80 on an essay unless he's blown away. This class was easy and didn't require much work. I would take him again and recommend him to anyone taking English.
Hallett's a pretty cool prof. He's funny, but sometimes his lectures were hard to sit through. He can be a tough grader on essays but with his assignments, commentaries, etc, I found he was a much easier grader.
Good prof. Attending class not necessary as everything is on bright space. Easier grader on discussions and assignments, but slightly difficult grader on essays. Gives plenty time to complete essays, very accessible outside class. Lenient with due dates! Gives good detailed feedback, so increasing your grades on essays is possible. Would recommend!
Overall, Dr. Hallett is a great prof as stated by many people. However, I found his lectures were sometimes all over the place, tending to stray from our english topic. That being said, his classes are interesting and engaging. He provides many opportunities for marks and a lot of time for essays. He's flexible with most due dates.Would recommend.
Hallett is hilarious, friendly and approachable. Shakespeare is not always easy, but he makes the course super easy for anyone.
very nice guy, but I'm not sure how much i actually learned in his class. Very easy to do well in his class
He's the best English prof I've seen so far. His lectures aren't mandatory so if you're one of the people who doesn't go to class you should be okay, but his classes are hilarious and engaging. He clearly cars so much about his job and loves to help students. He's really understanding when it comes to deadlines. Overall, 100% take him if you can!
Had him for English 1192, imagined places. Great prof, attendance is not mandatory for a good grade, he doesn't matter when work gets handed in as long as it's in before the last day of classes. Very good with feedback, and very understanding if you misinterpret a prompt, would 100% recommend to anyone looking for a great English prof.
David Hallett is one of my favourite English professors i've had yet. His feedback is respectful, clear, and useful. After reading feedback, I felt good about my submitted work and eager to build on top of it. He is helpful, if you need an extension, he will be willing to grant one, and if you have any questions, he will email you back quickly.
The course was great, would recommend getting started on the research paper right away! He was very great with advice and made sure you knew how to improve. Would love to take a course with him again, no complaints. Not much to do for the course and lots of time to prepare:)
Dr. Hallett was quite good. He was not a very difficult grader. The course was online and there was not much work to be done. The brightspace course shell was a bit of a mess though. That was the only real negative though. Other than that, his feedback was consistent and pretty good.
Amazing, amazing English prof. Little to no work, easy grading, and no firm deadlines (he says to pass stuff in before the end of the term lol). I went to one class the whole term as it was just him going over notes about the novels we were reading (which some may find useful to attend, but definitely not necessary to do well). 100% recommend.
Ok prof. Lectures mainly covered his notes from each book and are not mandatory to attend, and this course contained a very easy workload. However, I found this prof to be a very tough grader, in which you have to contain his opinion in your work in order to receive a high mark.
Dr. Hallett's lectures were mostly just him chatting about the novels and then topics would branch off from that, he loves to talk. Overall he is very nice, but sometimes what he is talking about can be boring. He is a relatively fair grader and his course is by no means difficult, however it does consist of a lot of reading.
Prof. Hallett brings a lot of energy and passion to his ENG1090 class. While his lectures can sometimes veer off-topic, he provides ample opportunities for grades and is flexible with due dates. I found unstuck study and the course textbook helpful for staying on top of the material.
Dr. Hallett is super kind and cares so much for his students. He is very flexible with due dates and is easy to reach out to. His assignments have lots of options which I almost found too broad to choose from, but it's still a great opportunity to be more creative with your writing. His lectures were great and he always went on funny side notes
Dr. Hallett is the best English prof I have taken yet. Not only is he super friendly and hilarious, his lectures are incredibly engaging and interesting. His assignments are not hard and he is very clear about what he wants and how he grades. Provides plenty of examples on D2L, thorough feedback, overall 10/10 professor/course!
David was a good prof! Lots of great feedback, very clear on expectations, used bright-space often, easy grader. My only thing was he rambles a lot, some on good information but he can get off topic. I would attend lecture but you can get by with missing a few.
David is a very nice man who cares about his students. I enjoyed the smaller assignments to boost my grade. I don't agree with most of the people here.. maybe I'm just not a great writer, but I didn't find his grading that easy (i could barely get an 80), but maybe that's comparatively. Gives good feedback. Make use of office hours if needed.
I found this course awful but the professor didn't help either. Hallett is extremely rude to students and staff alike, making snarky remarks if you ask a question he views as "common sense". Lectures were terrible as he simply read from the readings yet he was extremely loud and very unhinged in his lectures as well. Avoid, avoid, avoid.
He's a pretty good prof. There is a lot of reading and his lectures can be a little dry sometimes. There were a few times that he came across as being rude to some students and staff There was a small issue with our discussion posts at one point but he made things right! He graded my papers fairly and gave great feedback. He wasn't bad at all!
Lectures did not provide any useful information, he mostly just rambles on for the whole class. When instructions for an essay were unclear, I sent him an email, and he sent me a very saucy response back and did the same to my friend. His grading is very unclear based on his expectations, and his Brightspace shell is a mess. Terrible!
Professor Hallett's unique personality was equally my favourite and least favourite thing about his lectures. Although he speaks passionately and purposefully to engage his students, he tends to ramble A LOT during lectures. This made it confusing to navigate the course and figure out the tasks. However, he gives good feedback as soon as possible.
I found his expectations to be unclear and his feedback a little harsh which would've been fine if it helped me improve. Lectures were kinda pointless, I left this course feeling like I didn't learn anything. Good course to take for an A, bad course to take with him if you're trying to improve your writing imo.
Boring lectures, barely went to classes only 3 papers worth a lot of the grade. Good grader, doesn't care about spelling.
Super easy, barely went to lectures. Perfect prof for students in stem or taking a heavy course load as there were no real due dates apart from essays. No assigned reading only assignments and discussion posts graded basically by completion. Hallett does not really stay on topic and tends to go off on rants but overall not bad.
I highly recommend taking a course with Dr. Hallett. English 2000 can be a challenging and dreary course to take but Dr. Hallett made the lectures interesting. He uses modern language (sometimes profanity) to help connect the older texts to the way modern people would talk or act. He is also accessible outside of class to talk about assignments.
Awesome professor
Hallett is all around a good prof. His lectures are great, his assignments are interesting, he gives good feedback, and his classes are just enjoyable. There was a little hiccup at the very end of the semester with people who felt a grade was unfair but once they voiced concern, he took that and looked at the grades from a different perspective.
Dr. Hallett is great. Rather than a traditional participation grade, he lets students write online discussion posts and commentaries. I think that's a really nice touch, especially for the students (unlike myself) that don't feel as comfortable talking in class. He definitely makes sure you feel comfortable with writing.
Amazing prof! novels selected are interesting and easy to write on! gives clear feedback back!
Dr. Hallett was fantastic! The novels in this class I found very enjoyable and he reply's to emails as quick as he can. Dr. Hallett is very caring about his students and flexible on his due dates. The feedback he gives on papers are very helpful and will help you improve your writing skills drastically.
Dr Hallett is by far my favourite prof I've had at mun. He is super lenient and accommodating, he answers his emails quickly, and grades fairly.
The lectures were hard to sit through and a genuine waste of your time. I had attended about half of the lectures and every time he'd spend the first 15-30min repeating the same things about the assignments in every class. The course was extremely unorganized and unstructured and he was rude and egotistical. I will not be working with him again.
This professor made countless racist remarks on the first day of class. This included slurs, as well as a Nazi salute. He should not be allowed to teach at MUN. There was no context to the class in which this behaviour would have been acceptable
really frustrating class! his lectures are an absolute waste of time (he rambles on for an hour with no structure to his lectures at all- no class participation, & opinionated and nonsensical). he said a racial slur the second day of class, and is an incredibly hard marker. if you don't write according to his opinion don't bother.
This is my second time having Hallett and he's definitely grown on me. He is a very kind and caring prof and wants all students to feel respected and included. He also gives very helpful (speech) notes in his lectures which I found helpful. The stories were interesting with some duds but overall a great course. Fair grader and helpful prof.
Despite that one time getting blasted on the MUN Facebook group for saying a racial slur in a lecture, he was okay. Sort of an easy grader, as long as you're good at English. It was an online course so I've never met him in person
