Hamilton is fair

The arrogance is at times unbelievable, but to his credit Dr. Hamilton at least knows the material. The problem is that he has difficulty understanding that you may not. There are certainly worse options for a complex analysis course, but don't expect to be blown away.
He decided to stop taching the material in lecture. Great idea.
Dont know about these guys who took him for 200+ level classes. But, he's great in Math140. Hamilton only uses Homework problems for his exams and the lectures are pretty straight foward. Just dont expect any help from him after class, thats what the TA's are for. I'll be looking for him in 141.
Dr.Hamilton's lectures are very fast paced (I don't know if this applies to regular semesters, I took ODE during summer). He is very knowledgeable and presents the information with fluidity. Also very approachable. Exam questions are pulled straight from homework but he assigns a lot so you're still doing the same amount of work if not more.
as a person he's really friendly and interested in the subject he teaches. sometimes its hard to follow him in class. 6 tests worth 50 pts and a final, no curve or dropped grades, and tests are 4-6 questions based on hw
This guy doesn't know how to teach. Regardless of how well he knows the material, it doesn't make a difference if he doesn't know how to teach it to me. If I didn't already have this class in High School, I'd be failing.
The class was, for me, an easy A. I had taken a calculus class in high school, though, and also found it quite helpful that he allowed use of calculators on exams (yes, even the TI-89). I found that both the prof and my TA were pretty much useless if you didn't understand the material. If you don't already know calculus, prepare to teach yourself a lot and be prepared to DO the homework on a nightly basis.
Not so bad a guy as to warrant his Facebook group, but Hamilton's lectures are very fast, filled with mistakes, and taught in an incomprehensible Australian accent.
arrogant ****
i think i genuinely hate this man. he cant teach, he uses stupid australian terms for every concept, and his final was OBSCENELY hard. i had an A going into it (just because i had calc last year) and might of blown it just cause he wrote the test. he has a crooked mouth and its alot of fun to watch him talk. probably the only positive he has.
pleaaaseeee people. dont take this guy i beg you. i made the mistake and i am now regreting in. this guy hates answering questions at the end of lectures, very unhelpful, veeerrryy haaard final. i mean, i think i am doomed when my results come in. no curve, again,,,.. HARRD final. worth 200 points. please i am on my knees people,, dont take this
This guy is completely rediculous. He taught things that weren't on the syllabus and not even in our text. Wouldn't help the students if they needed help and both the TA and Prof. Hamilton made you feel like you were a complete idiot!
should not be allowed to set foot in a classroom. i dont care if he knows his material, bc hes horrible at teaching. he puts his decimal points halfway up so you dont know if its supposed to be 2.5 or 2 times 5. if i didnt take calc in high school i wouldnt know a damn thing. the tests are pretty easy but the final was impossible. stay away!
Ugh im re-taking it this semester because of him. I think he's pretty ok if you already know ALL the material and just need some brushing-up. As for me, I actually needed a teacher and he didn't really know how to teach me that well.
This guy is a genius. He was rated the best young mathematician in Britian in 1984 I believe, so he knows his stuff. However, he is really bad at passing that knowledge on. It is very difficult to learn from him, but he does give pretty easy tests and homework, so its not that bad if you can learn it from the book.
Definitely don't take his class. Avoid him if possible.
First off He tells you about how your tests come directly from your Homework the catch is you have a good 40 problems everyother day and chances are you will not do them. Im retaking this class over the summer when i have more tume
just do the homework and ask questions you should be fine.
excellent professor! had him last year for math140 and decided to take math141 with him.
Awesome professor. It is challenging but fair. I worked hard, came daily, did all the homework and did fine. No webassign, quizzes are open class (you can talk to people around you), tests are directly from homework. Not easy, but very fair.
All test questions are either homework questions or examples done in class. Hamilton is very fair and provides ample opportunities to give grades a boost with "bonus" quizzes that help your grade. Quizzes are open notes. People that do all of the homework and understand the concepts should have no problem obtaining a course grade of a B or an A.
In MATH141, Hamilton's lecture was generally interesting and his examinations closely reflected the topics covered in class and in homework. The quizzes in section (1/week) were easy and open. Homework is important--I got behind at points and did quite badly on some exams (I got 'A's on the first); however, the final replaced the course grade.
He is full of himself and thinks he walks on water. He can't teach and he doesn't even bother trying to help you learn. Expect to teach yourself. He is of no help at all. I swear I only passed because he thought I was cute. He hit on me when I saw him once for help....and he spent the rest of the time talking about how great he is. Arrogance!
He would write big so you could read the notes from the back of class, gave a bonus pnt to whoever corrected him - extremely generous w/ pnts. He gave a total of 40 bonus pnts from bonus quizzes alone (worth the same amount of an entire unit test). Basically you have to be a true slacker to not pass or even get a good grade in his class.
The class was hard and i worked very very hard. the average was ~60% on most of the exams, but i usually got >90%. He wont help you much, but his lectures are good. i read every section in the book and did all the problems. Also, he wont give you a letter of reccomendation for an employer if you are in a large class(like math 141).
STAY AWAY from this teacher. If you get confused he will not help you... or he'll give you an answer not related to your problem. So essentially, your grade is dependent upon the TA that you get. Thankfully my TA was awesome. Go to math tutoring if needed. The work is ok; the time frame to understand the material is short. (Tests every 2 weeks.)
I love him. He is very funny :) He makes fun of himself and other people in class :) However, you must study from the book after his lectures. One test every two weeks, and it comes directly from your homework. Never taken calc before. Just work hard, it's possible!!!
He's the best Calculus teacher. He randomly collects one page of homework, but it's always homework due at least 2 lecturers ago because he understands we have other classes as well. His tests are mainly easy, except for generally one problem. He gives lots of bonus points. Tests and final exam consist of exact hw pblms. make sure you do all hw
Dr. Hamilton is arrogant and unpleasant. His explanations are confused and not useful. His grading is haphazard and inconsistent. His tests include stuff he hasn't covered in class or assigned as homework. Stay away from his classes or you will have lots of regrets!
This is the worst professor I have ever had. He explains nothing, talks to the blackboard, expects the class to know everything about everything. He is not accessible outside of class and brushes you off as quickly as possible. He's lazy and makes mistakes all the time, leaving his students more confused than before even entering the classroom.
Regarding the tests from homework ..yes, he says it's only from homework, but then only 90% of it is going to be from homework. Still you should be happy he does it for us. Great guy!
After suumer school finished I thanked the Professor for " teaching the course so perfectly. Maybe I'll have the pleasure of having another one of your classes next year. " There was a lot of students who had flunked it twice before! I hear that half of them passed.
Calculus is not easy but this guy helps alot. Too bad we can't have him for Calc III.
Not a people person. I've seen him be very rude to students (one person introduced himself to Hamilton and he told him "why bother", refuses to answer questions.) I would never recommend him to anyone. As a teacher- great if you can teach yourself.
well, his lectures are not very helpful at all. he takes the easiest homework problems and puts them on the test. who cares if he is rude to students? this guy gives out A's like it's nothing! Anybody who got less than a B in this class is either stupid or lazy..or both.
Hard to understand his lectures. Makes certain leaps in proofs and will assume that the class understands. Uses the book but proofs are usually different. HW and testing are by the book but you can't miss class or else you won't be able to do the hw.
This class wasn't that hard, but the way that Professor Hamilton teaches during the summer is kind of fast. The grading came from only tests and matlab, so the work load wasn't too bad for a summer class. The questions from the test were directly from the hw, although sometimes he might of changed the numbers to make the problem easier.
He is the biggest jerk ever. I had a family emergency and had to miss a test... Instead of being compassionate he told me his life story and basically said get over it cause my life is worse that yours. Take someone else if you have the option!
It's kind of hard to follow his lectures. The only reason I would reccomend him is because he doesn't use webassign - he assigns homework from the textbook. And... it's not even homework. You do it if you want to. Test probs are from the homework. Not the harshest grader, either. He's not my "cup of tea". Cool accent though! (Australian)
Actually hes ok, pushes us hard but we end up doing better than the other classes. Kinda of puzzled by the second last comment as he taught 141 not 140! Also its real easy to get a makeup.
PDE is a difficult subject and this guy didit superbly. Highly recommended.
Hamilton is a great teacher; sometimes he takes leaps in his proofs and expects that everyone followed along, but usually that wasn't a problem. There are a lot of opportunities for extra credit in his class and he teaches you the material really well. Take him if you can. Also, he's Australian so he has a cool accent, which is a plus.
This professor is not helpful. Often times he is very confusing in class and does these abstract problems that have no solution to them. Overall, he is not very good. It is apparent that he knows what he is talking about; he just lacks the essential ability to convey this to his students. All I can say is, thank God i had an amazing TA.
It wasn't that bad, he may not be the most clear and fluent professor, but he does allow a lot of make up chances and extra credit. It was a hard class, some how I managed an A.
I thank my TA for passing this class. Hamilton had nothing to do with it. in my opinion he is a terrible teacher. maybe hes too smart for his own good
Handwriting is terrible. Lectures are extremely abstract and of little help. He is extremely boring to listen to as well. Pray for a good TA if you have to take him. Otherwise, avoid.
Hamilton doesn't seem to care about what his students learn. His lectures move very quickly and he focuses on specific proofs and theory that don't make sense if you don't already know a ton about upper level calculus. My TA was the only reason I ever answered any questions correctly, if not for her I would've dropped his class as soon as I could.
He seemed like a very nice man, but I would not recommend taking him unless you have to. Gave me false hope for passing the class and fell way short. You never know your real grade until the mid-terms or finals. Nothing is online...
Do the homework every night and some extra. Very nice teacher who gives many bonus quizzes to boost your grades. Always has office hours and is very friendly. He wants to give you a good grade if u show you understand the material. In my class he let u accept your grade before the final (and not have to take it) or try to improve it on final.
I've had some bad math teachers before, but nothing on the level of Dr. Hamilton. He's very smart, but he should not be teaching intro calculus- he belongs in the higher level courses. In addition, I've seen him skip people's questions, he's called me and others "dumb" in office hours, and has straight up lied about material on a test. Avoid him.
DO NOT TAKE HAMILTON! He expects you to know calculus like the back of your hand, but won't teach it to you. We had 4 lectures with him and he got removed as the teacher for Calc 1. He's a smart guy, but he shouldn't be teaching MATH140. He's really rude, as well. He'll never answer your questions, but will tell you irrelevant information.
He is horrible. That should be enough. Do not take if you don't every single part of calculus 1 and truly understand the content.
Pretty good for 411, just makes it hard when his lectures are so different from the book material, and he covers a lot. I didn't learn a ton in lecture, but they were interesting (best to learn the material beforehand which I didn't usually do). He's an engaging guy. Usually nice enough. Exams were pleasantly fair. Nice grading system.
I took 241H- don't repeat my mistake-- The HW he assigns, the lectures, and the tests do not line up at all. If you want to pass the tests you have to self-study. His lectures make little to no sense and hes rude when you ask questions (has refused to answer). The HW was ridiculously hard MATLAB assignments that had nothing to do with the course.
Not a great teacher but not horrible. Will make you work for it
Reasons why you don't want to take him: - He teaches Diffeq using overcomplicated jargon, Youtube is way more helpful than he is. - Matlab projects are long and complicated. - He is the stereotypical brilliant smug that everyone hates. - Cares more about showing how smart he is than teaching. - Lacks charisma, which makes lectures very boring.
Cannot follow along during lectures, as he doesn't explain while he writes. Homework is awful, as MATLAB literally doesn't help you in the class and doesn't relate to anything you do in class. Pray you have a good TA to help you understand.
Lectures are impossible to follow and he'll often begin problems that even he can't do and give up. I learned everything from Khan Academy and the textbook. All the MatLab assignments are near impossible and he doesn't teach any of it in class. The MatLab textbook is also no help at all so don't even buy it and just ask a friend for hw problems.
Generally, the difficulty of MATH410 depends on your professor. The thing that makes Hamilton difficult is that his lectures tend to be off topic about something much more advanced. You need to be able to teach yourself the material, but come to class anyways, his exams are on the lecture He was generous with final grades, but his exams are hard.
His lectures are extremely hard to follow, as he teaches very abstractly and basically assumes you already understand everything. If I didn't have a good TA, this class would have been way harder than it already was, and even then I still had to heavily rely on self-studying. The MATLAB assignments were also very confusing and time consuming.
I'm taking four 4-level math classes and he had the worst reputation but turned out to be the best prof i had for the semester. It's hard to understand the class solely by reading text, since it skips a lot and it hard to follow his lectures without reading the book. he has pretty nice grading policies and it is not impossible to get good grade
His lectures are nearly impossible to follow. He always finds the most confusing ways to explain things and does the most confusing/hardest examples in class. So overall his lectures are useless. Homework is decent, usually odd problems from each section. The only positive in my opinion is his tests are fair. Waste of time, would not take again.
hes super nice in person but the way he teaches does not make sense. He is very hard to understand and he does not have an elms page so you never really know how you're doing in the class. Going to class does not help.
Does not teach. Instead, he just does problems at his own pace during lecture as he talks to himself. Very hard to keep up with. And matlab was completely pointless and difficult. Also doesn't use Elms, which is very frustrating because you never know your exact grade in the class. Do not take
A lot of extra credit opportunities, if you are good at self studying then this is an easy A. Roughly half my class got an A+.
This professor is the worst teacher of math I have ever seen. He begins lectures and goes on his own pace in whichever route he wants and has no regard for the understanding of his students. Spends WAYYYYY too much time on theory and basically no time on doing problems. Gives extremely hard exams for no reason with no curve. DO NOT TAKE HAMILTON!
Took Hamilton for Math 246 Spring 2020 semester. His lectures are very fast and he rarely stops to take questions. If you miss one step it is impossible to catch up. It did not help when we switched to online classes because of the virus. Not sure how other professors are, but would not recommend his 246 class.
Worst Professor Ever
The man is a high level math teacher and wants us to solve to decimal points instead of leave answers in terms of pi or e. Enough said.
Do NOT under any circumstance take this professor. His lectures are equally extremely boring and impossible to follow. His tests are way more difficult than necessary and he doesnt prepare students for them. The TAs hardly understand how to the matlab hw. I believe that currently the class scale with be everything above 60 is a C.
The class was quite difficult and lectures are difficult to follow if you haven't read the chapters yet. Any difficulties were made up for by his generous grading policy.
If you're reading this bc you have this professor next semester, DROP THIS CLASS. This dude made me want to chug hand sanitizer. He has no idea how to use ELMS, and takes great pride in making his exams harder than anyone else in the math department. MF wrote his own final exam instead of using the MATH241 exam bc the standard exam was "too easy."
For the ridiculous amount of work I did, it was still not enough to get an A. For very timed test everyone had to use the ADS extra time just to finish. If you actually need extra time on tests for a medical reason, youre screwed. The tests were what you'd expect from a 400 level classical mechanics physics class, but with bad lecturing
AWFUL. Looking to teach yourself differential equations? Sign up for Professor Hamilton. If not, save yourself the immense amount of stress, frustration, and anger that you will experience if you take this class with him. His notes are next to impossible to understand, offers little help when students ask questions and was VERY unfair with midterms
Not a good teacher. Period. Avoid at all costs. Dr. Hamilton is a very smart researcher but conveys new material and topics poorly. Furthermore, he often displays a disregard for students and commonly ridicules them in class or indirectly in his very informal emails. In the end you will probably pass, but not understand what you were meant to learn
This dude is clearly smart but explaining math concepts cannot be for him. He does not recognize himself as a professor but rather as a freaking mathematician. The class is challenging and not your regular math class with support. The Matlab assignments are really hard since they don't teach it to you but in all fairness no one can teach Matlab.
NEVER take this professor. He has awful lecture material, is extremely rude to students, and clearly has no passion or ability for teaching. I recommend you take literally any other professor, regardless of their ratings, before you take ANY course with David Hamilton. Prepare to learn diff. eq. completely on your own with no help from a professor.
Don't take this prof. You will not end up going to lectures, they are useless. He does not know how to teach even the most basic and fundamental concepts. Then, his exams are ridiculously hard. However, most everyone passes because of the insane curve. He is very disrespectful both in class and through informal mass emails.
The only reason Im giving him a 2 is due to his curve and extra credit. His class is passable as his policies allow you to replace exam grades. I had him for both online semesters and boy was it a ride. I did not bother going to lecture as his notes are impossible to follow. Youre better off just reading the book. Exams are kind of hit or miss.
Hamilton is not a professor and admits that himself he cannot and will not try to understand why students would be confused. He's disrespectful to students and unresponsive to students questions. His class is doable though, Justin has really good notes that you can learn from. Go to review sessions, practice a lot and his curve will help you out gl
The fact that Hamilton is a COLLEGE PROFESSOR makes me question college all together. I've never hated a professor more than I do Hamilton. I had to drop this class because of the lack of teaching Hamilton provided. Not once did I leave class knowing what was just went over. He doesn't care about you and arguably doesn't care about his job. AWFUL!!
Horrible is just an understatement to describe how bad a professor this guy is. I'm just curious how this guy is still a math professor, despite all these bad ratings His lectures are very fast-paced and difficult to follow along, and his notes are almost impossible to understand. Worst professor of all-time PERIOD, take ANY instructor but this guy
His lectures are fast paced in sub par handwriting and while doing examples of problems, he stops halfway through and does something else instead. The TA saved my life since the professor's lectures are hard to stay focused on. His grading policy is very generous, which is the only reason I'm not failing. I'd advise against taking this man
If you are deciding if you can get through a semester of Prof. Hamilton, you can, but it will be with online lectures and a good amount of self motivation. He uses complex mathematical notation nobody can understand. Do attend review sessions, he tells you exactly what's on the exams. Also be prepared to do complex Matlab with no help. Good luck.
Not a bad professor but I must say that most of the time, everything he was saying was going over my head. Even if something starts to make sense, eventually, he drags it somewhere and.... that's just it...you get lost.
