WORST accounting class I've taken at JMU. not because it's hard but because Hayes thinks it is literally the only class you are taking. I haven't done so much busy work since I was in elementary school. and he doesn't teach well. he's pretty easy and gives you lots of bonus points...but avoid his class if you can.
Hayes is by far the hardest Acc teacher out there. Other teachers give multiply choice exams, he gives 2 day written exams. Those things were so hard. He grades homework and there are always pop up quizes. He gives this assignment that takes at least 24 hours to do. Trust me take another acc teacher.
No Doubt Prof Hayes class is hard and he assigns A LOT of work. But if you really put forth the effort you can learn A LOT, especially for Accounting majors. You do the work, you get good grades, and the teacher likes you. (a lot of work tho)
Dr. Hayes expects a lot--but he is very knowledgeable and is VERY helpful during office hours! The first test is crucial because the course builds on what you learn for the first exam. Two team projects--one to help you study for the final and one that is basically bonus points (counts as two homeworks). His classes do better on the final.
Hayes is a demanding teacher but also a good one who brings real life examples to the class. He expects a lot out of students but with some work accounting isn't too tough with his guidance. His classes do better on the final then other classes and his tests are tough but fair and doesn't try to surprise you. With some work you will do well!
Prof. Hayes was a great accountting teacher. He knew his stuff really well and was more than willing to do anything to help his students succeed. He would make special videos to clarify a subject which really helped. Yes, homework is a big part of the grade but if you do it you understand the material better. I would recommend him.
Nice guy usually, he isn't a bad teacher, his tests are just incredibly demanding and impossible for the average test taker to finish. He fails 25% of his students. I got a 50% on the 1st test. I dropped the class along with 5 others I know and he is the reason we are all taking 242 for maymester this summer. Would not recomend.
Great teacher but he is very demanding and there is lots of reading and homework. Test are really long. I was unable to finish on the first one and got a 61%. When we looked over the test i got 93.5% of what i finished correct. I had to drop due to long tests. About 25% of students drop his class. In my class about 35% did.
Hays is so nice and he really cares about his students- IF YOU PROVE TO HIM YOU CARE. Just get through the beginning- stay ahead of things!! Do the homeworks- they really do help. Go to class and office hours- you will be shocked at how much you end up learning! The tests are pretty tough, but you can get points easily to things balance out.

He tries to be nice and funny, but then he assigns SO MUCH HOMEWORK that I ended up despising him. It's a hard class and you will have to work your butt off but he is better than some other professors. Assigns a really long project at the end of the semester- start on it early. Final is department wide and way easier than his tests!
Prof. Hayes class is no walk in the park However, he is more than willing to help any student who asks for it. The key to success in this class is learning to be quick while still being accurate. I personally thought he was a great prof, and very fair. The project at the end is long, but extremely helpful for the final. Take Prof. Hayes!!
Take him, he's tough, but it could be worse. TIPS- Do the homework, then study the HW. The first test is the most important and you really need to live in the library in order to do well. If you're not self-motivated to do well in this class, you're going to fail. It's as easy as that. After taking his tests, the Final is boarder line easy.
Kiss your social life goodbye. This man is the absolute worst, assigns more busy work than any other prof on the planet. Tests are stupid, nobody got an A. He says he curves but he's full of crap. 13% of class gets an A, but I wonder if that's even true. I got a B, but hated every second. If you do decide to take him, god have mercy on your soul.
THE WORST
he makes what should be an easy class nearly impossible. the final was completely out of left field and ridiculously hard, and the midterm wasn't that much easier. he will make you hate your life!
I agree with every bad rating for hiim. He's a contra asset to the JMU accounting department. Got a B in his class but even if I got an A i would still give him straight 1's. He is so pretentious and full of himself, yet he's an ignorant bum who worked at mcdonalds and got the minimum passing score on cpa exam. didnt learn ANYTHING in this "class"
All accounting professors are quirky it's a fact. He's a great professor, but the course is not easy. He scares you in the beginning and makes a lot of people drop (if you get D/F on test 1), but he's extremely helpful and tells you exactly what will be on every test, down to the exact questions he will ask. Not bad to end up with, but not the best
Prof. Hayes is a very good teacher. As long as you do the homework and study, you can do well. He's very approachable, and helpful if you need it. I recommend him.
Perfect! I love him!
Alot of homework and tests are difficult, but if you try very hard you can manage a B
Professory Hayes is a great professor IF you are an accoutning major. If you are not an accounting major I suggest taking someone else, his tests are a lot harder than his homework, he is available to help and will do all he can but when it comes down to it, if you dont know the material you wont do well.
Interesting and ethusiastic character trying to teach a very tough course. DO THE HOMEWORK at the assigned times so you can familiarize yourself with the concepts a couple days before the test. One of the harder teachers, but you will learn. Go to every class
"Dr. Dave the Incredible" as he would call himself is everything but incredible. Poor teacher, gives pirate lingo quizzes, will make fun of you if you go to his office hours, and his tests made me want to punch a baby. If it wasnt for the textbook, I would have failed.
This man is possibly the worst professor in the Accounting program. He's never prepared for class and expects the students to lead. Class is beyond boring, and he seems like he knows absolutely nothing. He never listens to students and talks more than any person i've ever met. Avoid at all costs.
Absolute worst teacher I've ever had. He talks incessantly yet doesn't really teach anything. His grading system is asinine, and the material is totally irrelevant to the real world. This class is an absolute waste of time and effort. This man is a total idiot.
Makes an interesting class almost impossible to do well. He cares more about making the class hard than wanting his students to do well.
He is a nice guy, but a terrible teacher. he talked about how his schooling was all memorization and thats not how to succeed but his tests are mainly memorization. his methods of teaching are annoying and unrealistic. avoid him at all costs.
Hayes is the worst professor I have taken in accounting. It is not a reflection on who he is as a person, but his teaching strategies do not work. He reads off PowerPoints during class, which are straight from the book. The reason students go to class is because he threatens to collect hw. Tests are memorization. It is sad he is the only option.
I've never dreaded anything more each morning than going to his class. He just reads off powerpoints and you gain basically nothing from attending class. He tells you not to just memorize stuff, but his tests are a lot pure memorization. All he talks about is working for McDonald's, which he ran under. He is a nice guy, just horrible teacher.
Completely rude and arrogant. Does not actually teach you a single thing but he's SUPER DAVE apparently. Don't waste time in class just memorize homework answers. Completely unhelpful. Definitely worst teacher in all of COB. Complains about how much work he does and "doesn't get paid enough"... good luck
ACTG313 definitely a useful class for actg major, it's just Pro Hayes didn't make it so. The worst teacher I met ever!
Requires tons of work, some helpful and some irrelevant. Likes to do things his own way even if not done that way in real life. Tests are all memorization (doesn't focus on important things, necessarily). Talks about McDonalds WAY TOO MUCH. But the actual material is essential to understanding business. Some northerners say they cant understand him
Nearly impossible to get an A and you have to work pretty hard for a B. His assignments are extremely time consuming and final is ridiculous (though he does curve). Not a boring teacher, but the amount of work is absurd.
He may seem like a good guy at first, but wait a few weeks. There are a ton of assignments that take hours that aren't worth that much credit. You'll spend 8 hours on a project only to gain the same amount of points as ONE question on a test. He likes to pick one or two people per class and pick them to answer every question for that class.
I don't normally write these for professors but I just had to write one for Hayes. I retook this class over the summer and I have an A. He's the best professor I've had at JMU so far. The class is tough but he's a nice guy and he tells you exactly what you need to do to succeed in the class. He over-prepares you and I'm glad I took him.
At first he seems real nice but turns out he can't teach. He expects you to teach yourself while he just reads off a few slides in class to review. He thinks he is a great teacher, but its hard to believe he is employed. Goes very quickly over important material, and his test questions are very different from ones you've seen before. He sucks.
Hayes was by far the hardest professor I have ever had. Get ready to spend at least 2-3 a day doing homework or reading the textbook. Tests are extremely hard and he flies through the information during class. If you don't understand the material, don't bother attending class (teaches way too fast to learn). AVIOD at all costs.
Hayes gives you a ton of homework every night and expects you to complete all of it, which is possible and will help you know how to do accounting. This will teach you how to do the accounting but unfortunately, this is nothing like what is on his tests. His tests have some actual work on them but are mostly multiple choice that are impossible. DNT
Hayes is a really charismatic professor. Is the class hard? Absolutely, but its accounting! He gives you all of the tools needed to succeed. He is very blunt and realistic with grade expectations; gives you a taste of the real world. Even though it is a hard and most kids get "C's" in the class, he teaches well and i feel like 242 will be a breeze.
A lot of learning from the book and homework, but Hayes is there if you need him. Accounting is going to be hard no matter who you take, but if it's your major, this is the best guy to prepare you for what's to come. I wouldn't recommend him if you're only taking this for credit, but he prepares you extremely well for the final.
Hayes is not easy, but neither is COB 241. Be prepared for long online homework assignments. There were some nights I was up until 3AM. If you do not give his class 100% of the effort required, you will not do well. I aced the final because he prepared us all so well. If you never miss class and take all of his advice, you'll do fine.
Plain and simple: Take this class if you are and accounting major and have quite the time to devote to this class, if not, plan to take in it in the future or with another professor.
Very bad teacher, acts very fake and doesn't care about anyone but himself, does no teaching in class at all, he's very arrogant and loves to fail students and tell them to drop out. very unhelpful when asking him questions, and refuses to tell you how to prepare well for tests, an overall horrible teacher. no idea how he got hired!
Hayes is actually a good professor who really wants us to succeed. While his assignments may be annoying and time consuming, he grades everything fairly. Make sure to go to class or post that you won't be attending or it will cost you. Would definitely recommend for graduate accounting students.
I took Hayes during the summer so the class might differ from regular semesters. What I can say is that he has high expectations, whether you're an accounting major or not. He does his best to prepare you but definitely wants you to take time outside of class to master the subject. His is quirky but can come off as arrogant sometimes.
He is awful, avoid at all costs. Does not care about you if you are not an accounting major. Tells people to drop all the time. Very test heavy, lots and lots of homework. Worst professor i have ever had. Does not help you when you ask. Crushes your hopes and makes you cry multiple times a week.
Cob241 is going to be hard regardless of who you have, but Hayes does a good job of explaining material and he wants you to succeed. Homework is hard because you have to complete before he teaches any material so you kind of have to teach it to yourself from the textbook, but it makes more sense once he goes over it. Tests are really tough.
AVOID!! If you're an accounting major, go for it because he REALLY requires you to understand what you're doing. But if you're just taking it for COB requirements, take someone else. 3+ hours of online hw p/ night that he assigns & grades BEFORE lectures so you have to teach yourself. Also tells multiple people to drop all the time & just arrogant.
Hayes may give a lot of homework, but considering the topic it is EXTREMELY helpful. Homework helps boost your grade as he give 2 attempts per assignment and he gives LOTS of extra credit. He is approachable and knows what he is talking about. He wants you to succeed and tells you where you stand in the class and where you should be. Best for accnt
Was very overwhelming at first but I've grown to like him as a teacher. He does assign so much homework but it really helps you learn the material. After the first two tests I was one of two students with an A in the class out of about 30 kids. He likes to help, offers review sessions and offers extra credit.
Professor Hayes, while quirky, is a solid professor if you are willing to put in the work. He is very interested in his students actually learning the material and is there to answer any questions you may have. If you aren't prepared to self-motivate and self-teach, he is not for you. If you plan ahead, you will do well on his exams!
Really good teacher but you really have to work in the class. Lots of homework but it really prepares you for the class. Have to self teach yourself. He is really willing to help you if you need it.
He doesn't teach at all. He tells kids to drop is class, instead of encouraging them and trying to help them.
Ok, accounting is hard no question. But Hayes is definitely one of the best professor to take for it. Yes, you have to teach yourself. However, he provides a very clear and direct path to success. If you do EVERYTHING that he asks and assigns, its very possible to do well. Most people just aren't prepared for the workload. Just take him seriously.
Lots of homework, but it prepares you for the tests. Homework also helps your grade.
He's a good professor who truly wants you to pass. He will do his best on his end, but you will need to ask him questions in order to get clear answers and understanding. Tough class for sure, but I love how structured he is with everything. Stay on top of assignments and attend lectures! Attending lectures is optional but you honestly should.
Weed-out class. Helps a lot to be naturally good at it or you'll be putting in a lot of time. Professor honestly doesn't matter too much for 241, but he's pretty good/not bad. Counts the homework for the class for a good % of the grade, which helps. Textbook is a must, need to bring it to class. No attendance policy, but helps to go to class.
There is no such thing as a easy 241 teacher, but Dr. Hayes is definitely the professor to take. He gives honest feedback on what you should do with the class (like drop) and most of the time people ignore it and end up failing. The course material isn't that bad either, just takes a ton of work. Tests are all on material straight from the book
At first I was very hopeful bc he was one of the only professors who really taught. He went to a conference and decided to change to a reverse classroom where you learn the material on your own and come back with HW questions, and told us not to come if we didn't have any. Not the best but still better than most 241 p. HW counts which is helpful
Accounting is a difficult subject to grasp regardless of the professor. Professor Hayes is great at teaching and presents the information in the best possible way. There is a ton of homework but doing it is in your best interest. Doing it before class makes understanding the concepts in class so much easier.
He's a great professor, 241 is really hard but if you do all the connect assignments and pay attention in class you'll do fine.
Accounting is a very hard class in general, no matter what professor you take. You start material on the first day of class and you need to keep up to do well. But Hayes is honest in his grading and will give advice on what to focus on. Do the work early so you don't fall behind
So much work for a class that shouldn't demand so much time. Really nice and friendly guy but assigns so much work outside of class that should be used for studying 344. Tests aren't bad if you pay attention and take notes. Get ready for so many hours spent on assignments worth very little
You are assigned homework prior to class even starting - DO IT. There is homework due PRIOR to every class, it is online and graded. There were 4 tests and a final. I found that if you go to his office hours, he is very helpful and willing to help you. He is very organized, and systematic. Not everyone liked him, but I really enjoyed his class
Professor Hayes utilizes the reverse classroom model which really means he doesn't teach at all. Classes are question and answer sessions, him skimming the material, and making you feel stupid for not understanding. The only reason I have a B right now is because I got a tutor that actually explains the material. Don't take him.
If someone give Prof Hayes a bad rating its because theyre a bum and have a bad work ethic. Hes honest and will steer you straight, even if you dont like the answer. Hes the best professor I have ever had at jmu. If you dont do your work you will not do well.
Dr. Hayes is a solid choice for 241. 241 is hard no matter who you have and it's definitely a weeder class for COB, but he makes it fun. He can be cringey at times but he means well. He engages with the class to make sure they understand the concepts, and if you don't he doesn't mind going back to explain it another way. Also, he's BIG on bonus...
Hayes's class is the teach yourself and ask for help type. He has a snarky attitude and enjoys calling people out in class. Be warned, he WILL call on you in class, and you will feel dumb when he does, but don't get discouraged. There is SO much homework and 5 exams. It's possible to do well, but only if you dedicate all your time to this class.
Hayes comes into class day 1 wanting people to drop. It's discouraging, but stay and do your best. He's not the best professor, but if you do all the homework and study hard you can do well. He's systematic and nothing will be a surprise. Homework due every class and a test every few weeks. It's a lot to keep up with and tiring. Not impossible tho.
Three words: DO NOT TAKE. Literally the worst professor at JMU. He assigns so much homework that is due before every class and it is tedious and time consuming. Also, it isn't worth that many points. Doesn't teach us how to make certain calculations and journal entries which you need to know. Do yourself a favor for your GPA and avoid him.
I dont know how his class was in person, but online with him is absolutely horrible. I honestly dont know one person who is doing well. Highest grade I know of is an 80%, and that is with a 40 page study guide per test. Every negative review hits the nail on the head
Such a hard class. I study so much and take extensive notes and I've scored a 65 on the last two tests. I don't know what else I can do to succeed in this class and his lectures suck. He talks so fast and doesn't make an already difficult subject easy to understand. Do not take.... this class is so discouraging.
His class is a great example of what not to do in online learning. Gave more homework than the rest of my classes combined, yet I didn't feel like I was learning anything from them. He would teach you the basis of everything and expect you to figure out the details yourself. If you are stuck with him, get a tutor immediately and clear your schedule
Nice guy, but not the best professor. Loves teaching the course, but does not explain things very well. All he does for class is go over the homework answers; he does not show step by step how to get to the solution. Avoid him if you can.
Do not take. All he does during lectures is go over homework and talk about himself. Makes no effort to make notes easier and more organized for the student. Told us he is teaching us to pass the CPA exam which is irrelevant to those who aren't even accounting majors. Teach me to pass your class not the hardest accounting exam there is.
He was okay. I took him online and I studied for 2/5 of the tests. Managed to get a C and was happy enough with that. The class is hard and he expects you act like your whole life is accounting. Theres hw due before each class and takes an hour or two to do even if you google the answers. Ik a lot of ppl who got a tutor and did better in the class
Hes nice and will help if u schedule an appt. I didnt use the book at all but you do need the access code for mh connect bc thats how the hw is graded. Bunch of hw due before each class even tho its worth 5 points at max. Prolly wouldnt have passed if it was in person. If I would have tried harder I could have gotten a better grade but didnt
Hayes is one of the worst professors and teachers I have ever had. He is very discouraging and prides himself in being such a good professor when all he did was assign hw and read word for word off a PowerPoint slide. He gives out way to much homework and does not teach at all. DON'T TAKE HIM. HE IS AWFUL. YOUR GPA WILL THANK YOU!
If you put in the work you will be fine, he is just not an understanding person and you get nothing out of his online lectures. He goes 100 mph and the only way you can learn the material is to rewatch them and his videos that he posts. Prepare for this class taking up 8-10 hours a week. I got a B- and had one of the best grades in the class.
By far the worst teacher i've ever had at JMU. Class averages of 50% on nearly every exam with the combination of all real learning coming from the learnsmarts and connect assignments. Drop while you can
Probably the worst teacher I have had at JMU. Just because you know the subject does not mean you can teach it. 56% class average on all tests, and decides to accuse 30 people of cheating at the end of each semester.
Hayes was by far the worst professor I have had at JMU. Sure, 241 is a hard class, but this professor makes it extremely difficult and makes it feel like he loves watching his students struggle. Test averages were in the 50s for every test, and he decided to accuse over half the class (most were failing) of cheating on an extra credit assignment.
THIS mans is evil. Self teach yourself by reading the textbook. Never offered office hours. When scheduling appointments he roasted you for not knowing the material. After exams he made excel sheets and told the people who got below a certain grade they won't pass and should drop. Take someone else or prepare to fail.
This was the worst professor I have ever had and hope to not have one like him again. He told me after the first test that I was not going to pass the class and If i failed and took it again and failed to switch my major or look at gad in 5 years. Did not work through problems in office hours. DO NOT TAKE HIM!
This is the worst professor I have ever had. The University practically makes you take him since the sign up for the class just says Staff is teaching it. Please if you ever see this guy as your professor hope for the worst because that's what you're going to get.
The top review is BS. I'm going to tell you straight up, don't take hayes. The worse prof I've had in my 3 yrs of college. The only reason I have a decent grade in the class is because i've been busting my ass. He doesn't teach but goes around the room making us read the homework out loud when we are given the answers after we complete it.
People who don't like him don't work. 241 is hard, and is tons of work. Hayes will teach you Accounting better than anyone if you work. Also-HUGE on extra credit. If you stick around to finish the class and do the extra credit you'll get a higher grade than you were expecting.
If you plan to be an accounting major, take Dr. Hayes. He will teach you real world stuff. Be prepared to work hard to pass. He goes very fast at times (especially at the beginning), but trust that you'll understand the content if you study and FOLLOW HIS CHECKLISTS. Tests are worth a majority of your grade but there is good extra credit offered.
This professor is disrespectful, hard tests, and way too much homework. A week before school started he gave us so much homework and expected it to be done. He did not give many people a chance and expected you to know everything like he does. Went around the room and asked everyone questions but if you didn' know it he would act like you're stupid
Simply do not take Hayes if you have the option. He goes through the material extremely fast and expects you to know everything about accounting. Assigns a crazy amount of homework and can be rude to his students.
I thought Dr. Hayes was a good choice for 241. I was intimidated in the beginning, but if you do the homework and study the material, you should not do bad. He gives a lot of extra credit and the exams are very manageable. Just know you have to put in the work to get a good grade.
Even though it could be a lot of work, I thought Hayes was a great prof for 241. He is super organized and you always know what is expected of you, but you have to stay on top of things or you will fall behind the rest of the semester. He's super nice and really wants you to succeed and is always willing to help.
Professor Hayes was one of the best professors I have had in college. COB 241 is not an easy class but he truly cares about each students success if you put in the work and it shows in class. If you put in the time and effort you will succeed with Professor Hayes.
only 2 weeks into this class and its already a nightmare. he has sent an unbelievable amount of emails to us, has no clear grading criteria on the projects he assigns, makes every document extremely difficult to read/follow, and has yet to give a schedule beyond the next class. no idea when tests are, dude is extremely unorganized
David hayes reins from the heavens above. This mans is the most prepared professor ive witnessed and he makes following the course material elementary. God I wish he was not married! so handsome and intellectual. The statue of David was sculpted to the proportions of David Hayes emasculate physique. A must take.
Cost isn't my favorite subject (mostly because I am not a fan of statistics or managerial accounting) But, Dr. Hayes does really care about his students. If you have questions, he's always available outside of class.
Avoid at all costs. He will humiliate you in front of the class if you do not know the answer to a question. He moves unreasonably fast, and I will never understand why. His tests are very difficult and you need to know everything. He claims he wants you to succeed, but does everything he can to make you want to drop. Drop if you get him! God speed
Be aware that to do well this class is going to require a ton of work. Hayes moves quick and assigns a lot of homework so be prepared. The homework assigned really helps prepare you for tests so do all of it if you want to do well. Show up for all the classes too as important things are said and worth showing up for to take notes.
This guy made me withdraw from COB 241 and switch my major. Went way too fast during lectures. Has this compulsive obsession of wanting to be 100+ chapters ahead over the other 241 classes. Exams were impossible. Avoid him if you can.
Hayes is a really good teacher but it is just a hard course. Be prepared for a lot of homework but if you do it you WILL succeed, just is important to stay on top of it. He is always accessible by email if you have questions and truly wants his students to do well, he gives bonus points sometimes too.
Horrific professor and class. There is SO MUCH WORK and the material is not explained well at all, cannot stress the awfulness of the class. I regret not switching out. HOURS of homework between classes, confusing lectures, I have nothing positive to say. I dreaded coming to class because of the environment, by far worst prof I've had here. AVOID!!
I already made a review but I need to say this. This man gave us A LOT OF homework OVER THANKSGIVING BREAK. Wtf. Better yet we have to take a test right after this break. I shouldn't be surprised, he gave us homework 2 weeks before the first day of class and the day back from fall break we had a test. Don't take this guy if you value your time.
Is clear on what he wants to be completed, but is not good at giving explanations of how to do things and makes you feel dumb if you don't know.
Professor Hayes is by far the worst professor I've had at JMU. His tests are unnecessarily difficult and confusing, and he will refuse to answer any question you have on the test. There is an absurd amount of homework, way more than necessary. I wholeheartedly believe that he wants to see his students fail. WORST PROFESSOR DO NOT TAKE!!
I've never had to spend so much time on one class before, but if you really work hard, it pays off. His tests are hard, but he gives extra credit opportunities. He really just wants to see that you're putting in a lot of effort. If you do well, he'll reach out to you about switching to an accounting major and other opportunities.
He cares about the subject but is absolutely terrible at relaying information to students. He posts everything on these weekly checklists and expects us to do hours and hours of homework to teach ourselves all the material before class. Get a tutor cause he wont help u. also goes way faster than any other accounting class for no reason.
Dr Hayes is definitely not for everyone. If you're an accounting major or are considering that field I would 100% recommend taking him. He works very fast and it's set up so you learn the material before class and he reinforces it during class. If you keep up with homework/attendance you should do pretty well. You can tell he loves the subject!
David Hayes really cares about his student's success however he assigns hours of homework and does not teach the material. He only goes over homework in class and expects you to do well on the exam but doesn't teach anything. All of my friends who have taken him including me either had to drop his class or are retaking the class.
Hayes is not a good professor. He will randomly select a student "driver" that just cluelessly leads the class for the day. 9/10 times the lectures dont teach you a thing. You have to teach yourself by watching the videos he posts and those are sometimes hard to follow. He has no clear grading criteria and wont give feedback outside of office hours
Schedule is very unorganized.Responses to questions aren't clear/make you feel stupid.Projects are impossible to do well, even if you spent a lot of time.If there's estimate for project calculations, his is correct(even if based on his own estimates), won't tell you until after submitted.Taught myself exam content bc teaching methods are unorganized
Dr. Hayes cares a lot about his students but his teaching style isn't for everyone. He expects you to know the material by the time you get to class and he reinforces it. It doesn't work for a lot of people. It has a very steep curve and if you get it, you get it. If you don't you have to drop. HW is due before class and covers what he teaches next
Be prepared to teach yourself a lot of the material. In class, we don't review or learn the topics in-depth, and Hayes just goes through complicated Excel problems on the board without explaining the material. I wish there was a course pack, and we went through lectures with the course pack in class so we could learn the material.
Prof. Hayes is very nice and wants to help his students. However, I would be hard pressed to say that this is a good class. He hardly goes over the material in class so you're basically on your own when it comes to actually learning the material that is on the exams. The class is mostly tedious group excel projects, so be prepared to grind.
Class has a lot of hw and requires an understanding of the material before he covers it. He wants to see his students do well but expects you learn it yourself. Only teaching he does is through canvas videos or answering questions. Hard to do well on exams even if you understand. If you're not an accounting major, definitely go with any other prof.
Please do not take it unless you enjoy accounting! Hayes doesn't teach you what you need to pass the class; he teaches you for the real world. So, unless you like to learn accounting on your own time, I would NOT recommend it. I thought I could pull through on the final and couldn't! I jeopardized my other classes for this one. I don't recommend it
He was absolutely the most discouraging teacher and will try to make you drop cob. Only graded on three exams which are each worth 25%, the final which is 20% and then a ton of hw that only adds up to 5%. He also ranks everyone on an excel sheet after exams and highlights you in red if he thinks you will fail DO NOT TAKE HIM he's not even smart.
he cares about his student but goes about it all wrong. Doesn't teach in class only goes over the lectures he posted in canvas that you must watch before class or else you will have no idea what going on. He makes his course hard so we “do good” on the final but most of his students fail still because the final is different than what we do in class
Professor Hayes has a specific teaching style - expect to do a lot of self-learning and homework before class. It's challenging, but worth it if you put in the effort. I found unstuck study and the free textbook really helpful for staying on top of the material.
DONT take 241 with Hayes. barely teaches, expects u to learn everything before class, and discourages students. he puts tests scores on the screen and tells low scorers to drop. workload is insane and it'll wreck your COB GPA. And lol if ur cob gpa is already low, ur screwed with Hayes. I do well in school and this class put me in the trenches bro
Firstly, Hayes is the kind of professor that expects you to do all the readings/homeworks before class. Similar to Phil Heap for ECON, his lectures go over each problem from the textbook/homework and provides hints for the exams. If you are dedicated to learning and do the work on time, you will do well. He doesn't sympathize with laziness.
Everytime I walk to his class I don't look both way on the street because I'd rather get hit by a semi before I step foot there
If you value your peace, prepare to have none left after taking this class. I have never questioned my self-worth and academic abilities more than I have in 241 with Hayes. Whoever you think is the worst professor at JMU, I promise you Hayes beats them by a long shot. Please save your own life by not taking his class.
Spare urself and do not take accounting with him, had to drop the class- very discouraging and degrading. Makes me feel as if I have no purpose to continue on with my major.
The average on the exam was in the 50s, and refuses to curve any of the exams. His reasoning is: "there's an extra credit question” but it's only worth 3 points, and doesn't even tell you which one it is. You have to teach yourself everything before class because he doesn't actually explain the material. Probably the worst professor I've ever had.
Do not take his class ever! Everyone dropped his class
He is a knowledgeable guy, but every one of his lectures I attend leaves me more confused than when I arrived. He might know his stuff, but he really doesn't know how to teach. Half of my entire class has dropped out because without spending 12 hours a week teaching yourself, you will not pass.
Most strict cob241 prof. But cares a lot about the students and is honest that half of his students fail the class. Lots of HW 2 hard major tests 1 take home 1 final that he curves compared on how his students do compared to the other cob241 classes. If you lockin you will be perfect for the class
Took him In spring 2024, I had a B in the class and went to his office hours to ask questions about an exam. He pulled up my grades and said to me, "You have a B; this isn't good enough for upper-level accounting courses. You should probably switch majors." Ruined my mentality for a little, so I highly recommend taking a different teacher.
I went ot his office hours and he gave me MORE homework that he shamed me for not having completed when I went to class later that week. He said "You must not take this class very seriously if you didn't bother doing my work." Do not get me wrong, very knowledgeable but dear god is it SO much work. I pray for you if you get this man.
If your not religous... pick one and start praying. Hes a geniuine guy but there are 5 HW assignments due before each class. 5 heavy tests. goes 2 weeks ahead of the other classes and flexes about being ahead but half the class fails n he tells you ur going to fail no mercy. Hes a nice guy tho!
David Hayes is a very challenging professor. He doesn't lecture and expects you to teach yourself before class. Tests are for 88% of your grade, and at the start of the semester, he said that 50–60% will fail. When you ask questions, he turns them back on you and makes you feel dumb, making accounting much harder than it should be. Do not take him.
This class was the reason as to why I started going to therapy again.
I truly think he feeds off students failing his class. That's all I have
The more I tried to listen in class, the more confused I got. Dr. Hayes is really knowledgable and passionate about the topics, but made the class way more difficult than it should have been. Made me doubt my academic ability. Stay away!!!!!!!!
Professor Hayes talks at the speed of an auctioneer. If you don't spend hours on the pre-class assignments, you'll be completely lost. Falling behind even on work assigned weeks before the course even starts can sacrifice your grade for the whole semester. He teaches as if everyone is already an expert (in an intro level course btw) Avoid him.
Would not recommend David Hayes to anyone. He genuinely made me question my academic ability and when I went to office hours for help, he treated me like I was mentally challenged. This course made me go on anxiety medication and ruined my semester. Fade!
Genuinely no words to even describe how horrible this class went as someone who puts their all into their academics. Dont even waste your time.
