This is one of the most boring classes I have taken in my whole life. It is things I have learned in 5th grade! If you have any sence of upper level math do not take this. It will drive you crazy!
This class is a requirement for me, and prior to this class I took MAT210. Easy class, no homework, only take home quizzes and tests. He laughs at his own jokes which aren't funny, class is very boring.
horrible class. if anyone tells you it is easy, they are lying and it is not his fault but he doesn't help much at all. likes trick questions.
He's quite the character! He cracks me up, even at 7:40; he'll just say random stuff. "Man, I think i slept wrong, my neck is killin' me" or just random things...like the names and scenarios he creates in his problems. 1st time he taught the subject and i think over all it was a success...Really nice guy...Recommended!
He's coo, make sure you go to class, lessons are easy. Just study and put equations in your calc before tests.
I hate math but this class (college math) was very simple. Dave is great at explaining things; he writes examples slowly so it's easy to write down all of the lecture notes. tests are very easy.
This is, to date, the easiest class I have ever taken in college. Dave is great because he writes notes on the chalkboard, so you have time to write down everything he does. The homework ("take home quizzes") are carbon copies of the notes, and the test are even easier. If you just need to get college math out of the way, take it with Dave.
Nice guy. Very clear teacher method, and class structure. You don't need a book, his daily notes covers all his material. If you need to get math out of the way he is a good choice.
best math teacher ever!! He is really cute too!!
Heckman is a solid teacher.
He is a good teacher. It is a very solid class. Attend, listen to the lecture, and you should have no problem passing. No book needed. He covers everything you'll need for the quizzes and tests.
Great teacher. Explains everything very well. Always willing to help.
Enjoyed his class. Great teaching style, and not bad to look at, either. LOL
Dont miss a test! ever for a medical reason. teacher does not care whatso ever. will not give you a test a day early even if you are having surgery durring the scheduled test. He will not give any extra materials to study. Horrbile at dealing with people. Probably because people are different than numbers!!!
I love professor Heckman, he is nice and funny, and so attractive!! He says the dumbest jokes, but they are hilarious. If he wasn't the way he was then math class would be deadly. He's a really good teacher too, he explains the examples well and writes neatly so its easy to take notes. Good teacher, overall good experience in his class.
Prof. Heckman is an awesome teacher! He speaks in a very clear way, easy to understand, and writes out the lecture in a way that is very easy to follow. As long as you do the homework and attend class you should do fine! He's pretty cute too, and unlike some people who have rated him, I think his jokes are adorable!
Best teacher ever! He is sooooo freakin' hilarious! I hated math before I went into this class, now it is my favorite subject. He is defiantly a smart guy, he doesn't really teach out of the book at all, just his head. Take this class, you'll love him, and make sure to sit right up front or you'll miss a lot. Take good notes!
The worst teacher I've ever had. He moves the class slowly and tends to take a strange approach to his lessons. He takes the longest ways possible to do a simple question. He thinks he's funny, while telling random stories and brings his personal life to class way to often.
Great teacher and very easy to understand. Tells really bad, yet highly amusing jokes. My only concern is that he never stands up for himself when he has an obnoxious class, which is the only real hindrance to learning.
Whoever said this guy was hot must have special taste. The 142 is pretty easy across the board so as long as you take good notes and show up to class there is no way you can't get at least a B. He does tell really ridiculous jokes but you laugh anyway cause they're so random and out there. I'd recommend him if you're just trying get a good grade.
I am math retarded and this math is extremely easy. Just go to class, take the notes and do the quiz right after. The quizes are way harder than the tests (which means tests are very simple and straight forward) He's a nice guy and this MAT142 with Dave is the one to take if your not a math fan.
Dave is a really random guy. He makes bad jokes but I laughed because I felt bad. He is a good teacher, just go to class, take notes, and your good.
Let's face it: girls take this class because they read he's cute and it's an easy class. He's ok but his style could use some work. Perhaps he dresses plain to avoid being desired by his students. Anyway, VERY EASY CLASS. GO TO CLASS and you will be fine. Even if you hate math, you'll be fine :)
Tests are a little bit tricky but if you ace the take home quizzes, you can get a decent grade.
Not hot, confusing, and seriously the least helpful individual on campus. He doesn't explain things fully, and several times, he would introduce a formula without explaining how to apply it at all. I don't understand how you can teach a math class and not require homework, which he does not.
The subject was confusing, but the teacher was able to help where he could. He's funny and relates subjuects pretty well. You must go to class! everyone who failed did so because they weren't there to get the notes. Make sure you do all the quizzes and study them before the tests. The book is unnecessary.
are you guys f'ING kidding me?! this guy is a terrible math teacher! he is horrible at explaining examples and formulas and doesnt really care to even help you out. He is a nice guy but in no way a good or even decent math teacher. In comm college i aced stats! this class is only hard becuz hes so bad at teaching the course! Not recomended!!
I agree! very nice guy, but he needs to learn how to teach his students properly and go through examples thoroughly, rather than just speeding through them. He needs to stop teaching PERIOD. Its not that hes difficult, its the way he teaches the material that makes it so complex and hard to understand. You could be great at math, and fail the class
Pretty easy. He makes mistakes kind of a lot, which gets annoying, but then on test's if he messes up he just gives everyone extra points. He reopened all the homeworks once which was nice. If you pretty much understand math, he'll be a good teacher. He always trys to makes jokes and I always laugh.
I would definitely reccomend this professor. He always asks if there are any questions. Must attend class, do the plentiful hw and you should be fine. It seemed to me he cares how everyone does.
This professor comes off seeming nice but the way that he teaches is uncertain and makes you feel equally uncertain. He really needs to get to the point and stop asking questions he doesn't want the answer to and then being disappointed. Not a good teacher.
You can definitely pass this class but not with the help of Heckman. I stayed after several times to ask for help on homework and he would say sorry I can't help you. You can get an A or B but you will have to spend time in the tutor learning because he doesn't teach or help you. And he gives pop quizzes which are just like the tests.
Nice funny guy. He's a good teacher. I went to class every day and took notes. Not a hard class, if he gives you a formula plug the numbers in and get the answer. it's not hard. homework was easy. he dropped 2 quiz's, gave us 15 homework points, and the final was INSANELY easy, a lot of extra credit. he opened all the homework back up.
Cool dude! Made crappy/annoying class tolerable. Easy online homework, one quiz per chapter, clear lectures that make homework a cakewalk. Good sense of humor. I'd recommend him to anyone that doesn't really dig math. Best math teacher I've EVER had.
Heckman is a pretty cool professor. He grades super fair and the homework is extremely easy. We only have the final left and I have 100% in the class. I suggest taking him over many of the other professors.
He's a pretty nice guy. The one thing that I didn't like was about his teaching method and how he basically has only one approach to the problem. He means well and if you try your best, you will surely do fine.
I DID NOT LIKE THIS TEACHER. He was not clear in class. If you ask a question, he opts to do another example instead of answering. He seems to not know what he's talking about. The homework took forever because I had to reteach myself everything. The tests are unfair because a multiple choice is the same amount of points as a 5-part question.
He was a really cool guy. There were only 3 tests all year-- the last one (which was the final) was the hardest but still manageable. Only on-line homework. He had a really dry sense of humor that was hilarious. If you have to take stats-you def. want to take it from him!
this class was really hard, and i even like math but Mr. Heckman was very helpful. his test are not to bad but they are like 35% of your grade so if you do bad on just one you are screwed. the homework is all online and really sucks. but over all it is not a bad class and Mr. heckman makes it a little easier
Pretty easy and laid back teacher. Made class fun by talking in different voices when no one would answer his questions. Only thing is I was on the verge of getting an A (89) and he wouldn't let me do any extra work to bump me up :(
WORST TEACHER EVER. The class average on the first test was far below passing (below 55%). He teaches to the people that already have quite a bit of knowledge on the subject, not to those that are new to the subject.
The worst teacher ever. Does not explain or justify anything. When you ask him why something is the way it is, he basically says "Because This is what it is, and its that, which makes it that thing." I didnt understand ANYTHING, and The class avg. was like a 14%
Shows no interest in teaching and is constantly complaining and giving excuses bout how he was up late grading or that he feels sick or has some kind of ailment. He does not explain the material, but rather just reads what he is writing. Does not actually TEACH. If you do not have a math mind, especially, avoid. Tests are very hard.
I do not like math! Prof. Heckman is a great teacher. One time after class he stayed 20 minutes trying to help me! I can easily understand him and he does answer questions adequately. I think one needs to have a good attitude going into class and be sure and do all the homework. All you have to do is try!
I have no idea how this teacher has good ratings. He comes to class unprepared, talks through the lessons instead of teaching, makes a lot of mistakes grading exams and then blames it on the math department, and he assigns twice as much homework as any other teacher. He does not prepare you for the test because he does not even look at the test.
Although exams were a little difficult he is a great professor. Explained well and took the time to answer questions in class. As long as you study and do the webwork and practice problems, you'll do fine. Utilize office hours and tutor center. He is upfront about material and helpful.
He does not make any sense, Not helpful and taff grader. Very boring lectures. Tests are multiplechoice and no grading for your work which is bad for your overall grade. If you think about taking his class, remember you will regret Unless you want a D, E, or W on your transcripts. He doesn't teach math but only do his job. Strongly not recomended.
If you struggle with math like I did, either take 142 online, or find a different teacher. He is not a great teacher, but is a pretty nice guy. If you do all the homework, you can do poorly on the tests and pass like I did. No pop quizzes, and no surprises as far as material goes, all the tests are weighted equally, and multiple choice.
Avooooid this professsssssor !!
Prof. Heckman is a straight to the point professor who gives a quick explanation of the concepts and works through various examples in his lectures. He does not do any proofs (take mat270 for proofs). Great professor if you took calc in Highschool and just need to review. His tests are straight forward multiple choice plug and chug style.
This guy is the definition of average. His lectures are funny and clear, but he also assigns the most homework of any MAT 210 prof. Much of his class depends on the amount of past math experience you have. His tests are hard. He is a very likable guy, and makes lectures fun, but requires lots of work.
Hard to earn good grade in his class according to the multiple choice in his hard exams ... what a bad style of teaching !
The worst ever! His tests are impossible. He made all of ours multiple choice which means no partial credit. His final was 15 questions multiple choice and it was like reading greek, his tests were wayy too hard and not easy to pass. The homework was fine to do and he was fairly easy to understand in class but the tests are what will fail you.
His tests are really hard but the homework is easy if you don't wait until the last minute. Don't believe him when he says the first exam is easy, because its not. I only missed maybe two classes, did all my homework, and I still have a score of 56 before the final. Avoid if possible.
His tests are from 15-20 multiple choice questions, always leaving E) as none of the above. Makes it impossible to get a decent grade. Also, DOES NOT respond to emails! very frustrating.
Avoid this teacher! He may not seem bad at first, but just wait. He starts choosing favorites and will only answer their qs. He ignores you if you come to his office hours to get help and says to go to the tutoring center. His tests are ridiculous BUT the only GOOD thing about this class is do the online hw and you'll for sure pass. 50% test 50%hw
All right teacher. Wouldn't recommend taking his class in the summer though.
Before Heckman I actually enjoyed math. He made learning impossible. He knows what he is doing but he does not teach it well at all. He is of no help outside of class! He expects everyone to fail and is very pessimistic about people actually passing. WORST TEACHER IVE EVER HAD. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
The course being half online, don't expect too much from him when you go to lecture. He hands out quizzes that count towards attendance. If you have trouble with math, I suggest you stay later to get help from him and his TA's. If not, this class is a breeze.
EXTREMELY clear which is rare in math professors these days. Almost spoons feeds reviews prior to test dates if you show up early. As long as you show up the course shouldnt be too hard.
Dr. Heckman is a good professor. I found him to be a little confusing when I asked him questions, but that may have been my own ignorance. The quizzes are hard but don't affect your grade too much and the Exams I found to be particularly easy. Go to class and study and you shouldn't have too hard of time with the course. Would recommend
One of the best math teachers I have ever had. He is clear in his explanations and provides plenty of examples in class with varying levels of difficulty so you can grasp the information. His study guides for the tests are very helpful. As long as you go to class, it's pretty straightforward.
He is extremely thorough on guidelines. Since the course is half online, he doesn't do any of the teaching. Really, really nice though.
Great Teacher! Love his humour! Not as good as Christopher Heckman but better than nothing. The group quizzes are the best and the most effective teaching strategies that he uses. Test are a little hard but trust me if you study for it, you won't bang your head against the wall.
Easy class, kind of pointless to go to class on non-quiz days but you have to. I would highly recommend working ahead. All the classwork is online so you can do it at your own pace and can take two or three quizzes each class period. I finished in the middle of October doing this.
I heard he one of thebest Math professors however I found his class hard to merge into after AP mathmatics. He is not very nice when you ask questions either but ASK them no matter what. His notes online are VERY helpful however, the tests are difficult and he gives no extra credit. I'd give him a B+ as a professor same as the grade I recieved.
Great professor! Lets us have open-discussion quizzes! Come to lectures and study and you can get an A!
Nice guy, not soo good teacher. students will ask questions and he won't answer them, he'll say something completely different. takes attendance. Quiz every friday, but he will let you work onthem with someone. do hw online before its due and you'll get extra 10% . tries to be funny. exams are hard, need to study super hard.
He was an amazing stats professor. As long as you come to class, complete and understand his practice exams (which are almost exactly like the actual exam) you will get an A. One of the best professors I have ever had.
Great course! I used Spring Break and worked ahead. Finished a 1 1/2 months before the end of the term. Great program and Heckman always responds to emails within 2 days (usually sooner.) If you have trouble the tutoring is very helpful. Would DEF take another math class from him. Especially since I hate math and expected to get a C. Loved it!
Heckman is a pretty good teacher. There are group/open note quizzes every so often and the online homework is really helpful. Don't buy the book-- I spent $90 and haven't used it once. There are study guides for the exams but no formula sheet. Never been to his office hours as they conflict with a class but I feel he'd be helpful if you went.
Pushy, takes attendance, and wasn't helpful overall. So glad I don't have to take any more general math courses.
It is really easy and he gives groups quizzes which is really cool. and the HW on math lab is easy too. his lectures are really straightforward whereas you can easily understand because he gives lots of examples. he takes attendance but it's not necessarily mandatory. don't listen to the other bad comments about him, it's totally an easy A class!
Professor Heckman is probably one of the best math teachers I've ever had. He gives group quizzes promoting collaborative effort and in my opinion, this is most helpful. Tests are easy if you take the time to study and homework is easy but can sometimes be time-consuming. If you ask a question, he is VERY clear in his responses. I recommend him!
This teacher is only good if you totally understand Calculus before coming into his class. He acts like every student should know every answer and doesn't help when asked.
Heckman is a GREAT teacher, dont listen to bad reviews. Calculus is a class thats hard for most people so you have to work hard for a good grade regardless. I was unhappy with my grades on the first two exams. With a lot of studying on my part and Heckman's help I aced the final and got an A in the class. He is helpful all you have to do is ask!
David Heckman is an average undergrad introductory-level professor. He is extremely monotone and quite nerdy. He is neither a bad nor good teacher. However, if you have some prior experience with calculus, this class is a breeze. Don't buy the textbook, just the access card for mymathlab. Oh, and he gives pop group quizzes, but lets you use notes.
Relatively easy professor. Very good at explaining concepts relating to calculus, I personally had no issues with him
Heckman is a good professor, He explains concepts clearly and is always willing to help students. He gives group quizzes which make them easier to pass, his class is really passable if you pay attention and show up to class. He can be a little monotone but overall hes a good Calculus professor.
Great teacher. He mostly teaches with examples, which I really like. He really wants his students to succeed, but in order to do well in this class youre gonna have to put alot of work and practice outside of his class. His exams are VERY difficult.
He's a really good teacher. Expect weekly online homework on MyMathLab that you can do until you get 100% on each assignment, open note and partner quizzes after covering about 2-3 sections (11 Total), 3 tests with the third test being a non-cumulative final. To make it better, he also has plenty of cheesey jokes.
If you have past experiences with calculus, this will be an easy class for you...otherwise it's a bit challenging. You don't use the textbook, but homework is online and there are weekly quizzes where you're allowed to work in groups. If he has any review sessions, go to them! They help!
DO NOT BUY THE TEXTBOOK! (Didn't even open mine once). Access code for Math Lab is much cheaper and it is all you will need for this class. Heckman is a good professor, I made it through calc with a B. The first part of the class is pretty easy, but it gets a little more difficult as the semester goes on. Take advantage of office hours/tutoring!
Good professor, hard class. He does what he can to help. Very nice and relatable.
Heckman is such a great professor! This was my first time taking Calculus and he made it fun and easy with plenty of jokes. His examples in class really do help for the homework and tests. NEED MATH LAB, do not buy textbook. Easily my favorite MAT teacher at ASU. MUST TAKE! Quizzes weekly but you can work with a group!
Great teacher, great guy, great friend. Reminds me of Johnny Depp.
good professor, gives really hard quizzes but they are group quizzes so it isn't that hard to do good on them and his exams aren't too bad if you study for them. Easy to understand and explains the concepts with a lot of examples. He can be a little monotone at times, but overall good professor.
I went into this class ready to learn, and I have to admit that he does a rather decent job teaching the material in his lectures. However, on a personal level, he could care less about you. I had to miss a class for a job interview and when I approached him about making up what I would miss, he completely blew me off and failed me for the quiz.
Heckman teaches through examples so if that is not the right type of teaching for you, I wouldn't take him. All his pop quizzes are group work so they are pretty impossible to fail. He also, grades extremely nicely. He gives everyone at least 2 points for every quiz and exam. You have to really try not to do well in this class.
Heckman is a really fair professor. Easily the best math professor I have had at college. Definitely need to attend class and pay attention in order to do well. He has many pop quizzes but you can work with your neighbors and they're open note, which is the biggest appeal and helps more than you would think in learning the material. Good online hw.
His lectures are straight forward and if you ever need help his office hours help. If you pay attention every lecture, go to his office hours, and go to tutoring the class isn't too hard. It was my first time taking calculus and I feel his teaching methods were good and helpful. Definitely one of the better math teachers I've had at ASU.
He teaches through examples. He lightens up the lectures with dry humor, he's hilarious. You get out early frequently. GO TO EVERY CLASS, there are weekly group, open-note pop-quizzes. Don't buy the textbook. Pretty easy class if you pay attention and really try on the homework.
Dr. Heckman is a fair grader and his class is set up in a way that is very easy to pass. The online homework system allows as many attempts on a problem as you need so its a definite 100% in that category. Quizzes can be unfair occasionally but he drops the lowest two. Tests are fair and not too difficult. Overall a good calc professor.
I should have dropped this class. Unless you come into this course already having a brief understanding of the material, you will not be successful unless you study your butt off. Get ready to teach yourself. Quizzes every week are group quizzes and there were only 3 exams.
He teaches the material pretty clearly, but is definitely not interested in helping you out anymore than he needs to. His quizzes are extremely tough even if you can work in groups and while the tests are fairly easy if you make even a few mistakes it'll tank your grade. Would not recommend to be honest.
Heckman lectures quickly and often does not provide very many examples of material that appears on the test. He does weekly quizzes that allow you to work with others to buffer your grade, but other than that the tests are much more difficult than those of other 210 classes. If you have the opportunity, I recommend taking a different teacher.
Professor Heckman's class is a good choice if you are the type of student that pays attention in class, takes down notes and isn't shy to ask for help. He gives you a week to complete the homework. Quizzes are hard but he lets you work as a class. Exams are easy but each question is worth 5-10% so making mistakes will quickly drop your grade.
I think David Heckman is by far one of the best math professors at ASU. He is very clear about what is expected and his lessons are very easy to follow. I think he is hot and I also think he is really funny (if you like corny jokes)! Definitely would recommend him! Don't buy the book though.
Not a terribly difficult class. As long as you do the homeworks and pay attention, you should be fine. You definitely need to study for the exams. I suggest watching the videos he posts online, they're pretty helpful.
Great professor. Difficult class but he makes it as easy as possible. Gives 10 pop quizzes throughout the semester so you cannot miss class. Teaches with examples, so if that is your kind of learning this class will be easy. Usually lets class out early. Exams are easier than the homework and quizzes. Would definitely recommend his class.
Great teacher. If you take notes in class and ask question you will be fine. Lectures match homework, homework matches quizzes and tests. He has light-hearted humor. He is a great teacher and goes easy on grading. I definitely recommend. He actually made me enjoy calculus (what?) for most of the semester.
This is a required class for Business Communications majors. Why? I have no idea. Taking this accelerated class over summer was incredibly challenging. You aren't allowed to use ANY notes on the exams. There were dozens of complex formulas with 20 steps each that you had to just remember. Don't take this class unless your retention is hardcore.
HW (20%) quizzes (20%) and 3 exams (60%) The final exam looks nothing like the review sheet so goodluck with that one. Definitely pass-able without learning anything but you have to teach yourself because his lectures are pointless. Only helpful thing is mymathlab examples for each problem
Easiest math class I've taken. Every quiz is a pop quiz. All homework is online and can be repeated as many times as you want until you get 100%, and the exams are curved. Plus, he makes punny jokes all throughout lecture which makes it a lot more entertaining! As long as you show up and pay attention you'll be golden.
He was one of the best math teachers I've ever had and was super chill. He wants you to succeed in his class and will stay after to answer your questions. Super great guy and if you do the homework and take good notes for the open note, pop quizzes you will do great in his class.
He never tells you when the quiz is, but they are all group quizs. His lectures are clear and only assigns homework twice a week.
good teacher. He is always willing to help during class, after class, and in office hours. Gives you lots of examples so you know what to expect on the tests and homework and quizes
Dr. Heckman is a GREAT professor, but he teaches many, many lessons for ONE test. I highly recommend him if you have previously taken calculus. He is a funny, intelligent professor that give thorough examples.
Heckman is an amazing professor! He is funny and straightforward with his lessons. I aced all his exams. They were easy, as long as you attend the lectures and do the homework. He has an online class that links to his in-person class, so if you miss a lecture, he has online videos. HINT: USE HIS ONLINE WEBSITE, THEY HELPED ME PASS THE CLASS!
David is really nice and funny during the lecture. He's really clear while teaching as well. You can work in groups during quizzes and he's likely to drop some lowest grades. Exams are not hard as long as you do all the homework and review all the quizzes. He does take attendance though. I'd definitely take his class again if I have math.
He is an amazing teacher! All the quizzes are open note and we are also able to talk in small groups as well. His lectures are very clear and always seems to keep them on the lighter mood with puns and jokes here and there. Tests are easy if you review quizzes and do the homework. Easily one of my favorite teachers.
Professor Heckman is a great lecturer and he is very straight forward. He is a funny guy and he makes math a little bit interesting, even if you hate math. Calculus is really hard. There are 2 homework assignments a week and he gives random group quizzes. He only gives 3 tests and the final is not cumulative
Heckman's a great teacher, but the class itself is pretty difficult. To excel in this class make sure to do all the homework and sit next to smart people-because you can work with them during in class quizzes. The lesson videos he posts on his website are very helpful to watch before tests. Expect puns!
the class in not too hard if you pay attention and do the homework you should pass. plus any quizes given are group so grade booster
Pay attention during class, do the homework, study the quizzes! The "Pop" quizzes are a collaborative effort with the people sitting by you! Got an A+ with some work! Super funny guy!
hes amazing. his class is probably one of the few classes I enjoy going to. yes there are many quizzes but he lets you work in a team so there's no reason to not get an A on those. plus he looks like Chandler Bing from FRIENDS so that's a huge plus! would take this class again!
Office hours aren't flexible so if you need help and can't work your schedule around his, good luck! Homework assigned daily and there is a pop quiz almost every week; they are collaborative which makes it easier. Passes out attendance sheet and counts bodies in room so make sure to show up and don't use phones in class cause he will call you out
Calculus is a hard subject in general. If you do the homework and show up to class you'll be okay. Also sit next to the smart people because you can work together on the pop quizzes. The tests aren't cumulative.
YOU MUST GO TO CLASS IF YOU WANT TO PASS THIS COURSE. The material in itself is pretty challenging, but he definitely helps dumb it down so that it's easier to understand. I would definitely take another one of his classes again. Just pay attention in lecture and stay on top of your work. Homework and quizzes are total free points.
Class was difficult for anybody who hasn't taken a math class in the past year. Professor Heckman knows what he is talking about and is pretty good at explaining how to complete the problems. I feel like he expected a great deal of prior knowledge of trig and precalc, which is hard when you haven't taken a math class in 1.5 years...
Cool guy. Math is never fun but I have to say I enjoyed this class. Heckman is a great professor, he explains everything and makes sure you understand everything. Homework on mymathlab, 13 in class group quizzes (he drops 3), and tests are usually okish. He hosts in class review sessions before every test. Take his class if you can.
Good professor. Although the online class is extremely difficult so I would advise against that.
He is a great professor and gives tests that are easier than the hardest questions on the homework. He really hates when students talk during lecture however and wants you to tell him if you are going to leave in the middle of lecture. Otherwise, an easy A and he tries to be funny.
He sucks at explaining what we learn. Basically you copy down what he writes and thats about it. good luck lol
Heckman's a good guy, but a terrible teacher. I have to go to the tutoring center for every lecture because he doesn't explain anything.
DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS UNLESS YOU HAVE TAKEN CALCULUS ALREADY OR GET READY TO TAKE THE L!!!!
Heckman is a great professor. He explains things very well and gives a bunch of examples with each lesson. As someone who struggles with math, I can say that I have never done as well in a math class as I am doing now. There is a homework assignment for each lesson but very doable. Weekly quizzes but you can work with the people around you.
Professor Heckman is a great teacher! I sat in the front because I wanted I'm not good at math and he helped so much! He even has an online website for students to ask questions and has lectures posted on his website too! There is a quiz after every 2 to 3 lessons but they are partner quizzes. There is a lot of hw but its not very time consuming!
He drops 3 of your lowest quizzes! Also he has like review sessions the class before the tests. He tries to be really puny and makes class interesting! His website contains all the main information if you don't understand the material covered in class. Has many reviews on his website with answers and will help if asked
Honestly just show up for this class, study a little bit for the exams, and stay on top of the homework and there is really no way you can't pass.
I've never taken calculus before and I was worried about my performance in this class. I really enjoy Heckman and I find his teaching methods to be efficient.
I kind of feared calculus, but when I got into Heckmans class, it was just another math class. People are either good at Stats or good at Calc, I found out I was good at calc. He makes the class easy by walking you though problems with examples. ALSO MAKE SURE YOU KNOW TRIG!!! His quizzes youll get 50%-100% on but they are harder than his tests.
Definitely don't take him if you haven't taken calc before. He's bad at explaining concepts, so would have to go to tutoring centers every week for this class if you want to do well. If you have taken calculus before, his class is pretty much an easy A-/A. Also I don't like him as a person either, he can come off as a bit condescending at times too
He's very misleading when it comes to the material he expects you to know. I had to buy a "calc for dummies" book in order to get a better grasp of the test material. He scratches the surface of a concept in lecture and expects you to work deeper into the concepts on your own time. Also he doesn't control a talkative class, he will just continue on
I have taken calc one and two before so I had a relatively easy time with this class. If you haven't then it will some extra effort on your part because he assumes that many know the material already. But it is all doable. Tests are easier than the homework and the lectures. All lessons are online so it's easy to study. Super nice and jokes galore.
I was very nervous about taking Calc but Heckman made Calc extremely easy! His homework, quizzes, and reviews are harder than the exams so if you make sure to understand how to do all of those problems the exams will be extremely easy! He goes step by step in class with multiple examples so I highly recommend him!
The class isn't even calc 1. I took 1 and 2 before and this class was nothing. Mr. Heckman is very nice and he gives extra credit on the exams and sometimes on the quizzes. He is a great teacher I don't know why people say he's not. I literally went to class and studied for an hour each week and got an 101%.
This guy made me love math again which i never thought would never happen after taking calc in high school. He made calc 1 easy to understand and he's a funny dude. Exams are much easier than quizzes and homework. Hes also one of the nicest teachers. Im almost sad that this is the last required math course for me.
Really nice guy, boring class. He tried to get people to participate all the time and then we just sat in silence until someone offered an obligatory answer. Good professor and cares that you understand. There are pop quizzes like once a week but you get to work with anyone sitting around you. Tests are straight-forward, easy if you do the homework
Amazing professor that made me understand calc for the first time in my life. I had a horrible calc teacher in high school that overcomplicated things. Professor Heckman is great at explaining concepts and he answers questions without making you feel dumb. The exams are easier than the hw/quizzes and they're curved!
Math was never my subject and I thought this class was easy! There is a lot of homework but it 's simple. The quizzes were similar to the homeworks and some quiz questions would show up on the exams which you have to download a program and everything is proctored. I did not do well on the exams but several quizzes were dropped as well as homework.
Unless you're a math major, it is very difficult to pass. Does not explain material well in class, and does not use any textbook. Office hours unhelpful and waits/expects you to know all the answers. Tests make up a majority of your grade.
I have struggled with math since elementary school, and failed the pre-req for this class twice. But this teacher is AMAZING. The way the class is structured keeps you on task. Take good notes and pay attention in class, the homework is easy points. The quizzes are hard, but you get to work with others. If you do the reviews, the tests are easy.
After taking this class I noticed he expects us to know the answers to most of the problems he just introduced. He is not very good at explaining why he's doing what he's doing, you just kind of have to memorize the steps from examples. I was often confused and his examples never matched his quizzes. Quizzes were harder than the tests.
I had never taken calc before, and this class was nowhere near as hard as I thought it would be. He's super kind and funny and if you go to his office hours he'll help you with anything you don't understand. pay attention and do the homework and the reviews. tests are much easier than homework/quizzes, and the pop quizzes become pretty predictable
Heckman is great, he made calculus so easy for me after having the worst experience in high school. It's really just a glazing over of calc subjects so pretty straightforward. The quizzes were pretty hard but you got to work together, and the tests were so easy. Plus I loved that he had videos online. Do the homework and it'll come easily.
Heckman is funny and explains the material well. The pace is pretty slow and the homework and quizzes tend to be more difficult than the tests, so you are well prepared to take them. There isn't much homework, and quizzes can be done in groups. Many of the assignments are online, so you get feedback right away.
Did the whole semester in one month. Plenty of homework but thats all I used to help me on exams. All 3 exams are curved and no final. Very organized since day one. He will respond to emails even late at night. Also drops lowest grades. Allows multiple attempts on hw and quizzes. Taking another class with him next semester!
Professor Heckman is a great professor! I had his class for Calculus and he actually made me love math again. I wouldn't say the units he teaches are difficult and he really teaches you the "Why's" behind math concepts. He has a sense of humor and gives out quizzes randomly, usually on Fridays, make sure you do them.
Professor Heckman likes to simplify things and make them easier, so if you like that, he's the one for you! He makes corny jokes a lot, but overall is a cool guy. Sometimes the lectures leave out some questions you might need help on, but he usually covers everything. No textbook needed! He has online weekly HW problems, but they aren't too bad.
During lectures, he doesn't really explain the steps of each example he does. It seems as if he expects us to know how the answer was found. He gives a lot of pop-quizzes, but the good thing is you may work with your classmates. Does not require a textbook, does not use blackboard. Makes a lot of corny jokes, nice guy, but not a great professor.
He's okay. There are a lot of pop quizzes, but luckily he allows you to use your notes while work with others near you (so sit next to smart people). Homework is okay but can be irritating. Tests are just fine, they're cumulative so make sure you understand each topic. Best advice is to go to every class because he's always teaching a new section.
Heckman in my opinion was a very good math professor. He teaches through examples so if that is not how you learn I wouldn't take him. He gives a lot of pop quizzes but they are honestly a good grade booster because you are allowed to work with the people around you and use your notes. Just take good notes and pay attention and you will be fine.
He is a really nice and funny person, but as a professor he teaches very fast and expects you to remember a lot from highschool. Doesn't go over basics. He does post very helpful videos online though for every lesson, which I found myself using to reteach the subject at home.
Dr. Heckman was a prof who really did the most. Calc I has a lot of material, but he provided multiple resources like online lectures and quizzes that were difficult but you could talk to others around you. He drops three quizzes in the end, and the exams were much more straightforward, just like the examples in class. He was a very caring prof.
I'm awful at math and havent taken it in 3 years but Heckman was amazing. Expects previous knowledge (mostly trig). I had none and still did okay with just his practice material. The pop quizzes are HARD. Like, way harder than the exams (MCitten) but you get to use notes and neighbors. Even then they can be challenging but the exams are simple!
No calculators on exams but teaches with them and homework and quizzes use them. Complains that everyone is doing bad but doesn't try to teach differently. Skips steps during examples. Definitely go to the tutoring center at the beginning of the semester. 3 exams worth 20% each. Class is 50 mins so you have to rush through quizzes and first 2 exams
Basically you'll have a pop quiz at least once a week (for my class, you can use a partner. which was nice.) His exams and the homework are different. I caught myself reteaching myself everything. I mean, he went over everything really well for his exams (also HIS EXAMS HAVE QUESTIONS STRAIGHT OFF OF THE QUIZES)
He has funny lectures and explains the material well. Makes class interesting and always challenges you to think about the problem. I am not great at math, but the instructor made calculus easy to learn.
Prof. Heckman is a good professor. His lectures are to the point and also his review videos are a lifesaver! Make sure you watch them. Pop quizzes probably one per week are given so you have to show up. Quizzes are way harder than the test but he allows you to work in groups for the quizzes. So sit next to smart people. Lots of hw but achieveable.
Read chapters ahead of time, he mainly just goes over example problems in class. Really easy if you pay attention. Need a t183/84 calculator. All homework online canvas/mystatslab. BUY THE TEXTBOOK. He isn't the best instructor but it's easy to teach yourself if you read the textbook and use tools in mystats lab like help me solve & show me example
The most boring and dry person Ive ever met in my life. His class is dreadful and makes it seem way longer than it should be. Its pretty straight forward if you pay attention and tests arent that bad but its a hard class to sit though.
Prof Heckman is an amazing professor! He has jokes and is caring about his students. He def wants them to succeed and makes sure the exams are easy, if you studied and went through all his notes & quizzes. he does have pop quizzes but if you sit next to smart people, you will be fine since its group quizzes. my fav MATH prof (which is rare at ASU)
Professor Heckman is a very good lecturer and is always there to answer questions. The class is made up of homework's (he drops 3 lowest), pop quizzes (drops 2 lowest), and 3 tests. It is a challenging class but doable. He makes it easier to understand and drops a lot of assignments to boost grades.
Took him for calc and stats. His lectures are really boring, but math isn't the most interesting subject. He's nice and explains things well, gives LOTS of quizzes but lets you work with others (easy A's). His exams aren't bad at all, just study and you'll get A's. Overall a good choice, just buy a coffee before because you will get bored.
Heckman is a great professor. He really knows what he is talking about and has learned over the years how to relate it to his students. LOTS OF HW! He does provide videos online for every chapter which are very helpful. Fair grader. Calculus sucks, but he makes it not suck as bad.
Heckman made something as boring as calc seem interesting. He made lectures extremely understandable and funny. The pop quizzes are hard, but you get to work in groups and if you do the homework beforehand, they are usually easy A's. The tests are even easier because no calculators are allowed. I put in the work with hw and superquizzes to get an A
60% exam (3@20%), 15% superquizzes (3@5%, basically mandatory reviews on MyMathLab), 15% in-person quizzes (10 total, but can work in a group), and 10% homework (23 assignments). Nice dude, plenty of online resources, and makes his exams fairly easy, focusing on the concepts. Makes calc fairly easy to understand, i recommend him if you're nervous!
I am not someone who is good at math but I felt that this professor made it pretty simple to pass and be successful in this class. He is always open to questions about the material and gives quizzes once a week that he allows you to use your notes for. The homeworks help with understanding the material and his exams aren't tricky or difficult.
Heckman is a very good professor that makes calculus extremely easy to understand. The type of problems he does during lecture and the ones that are on your homework are the exact questions on the tests. Do the work and you should get an easy A.
One of my favorite professors. Such a nice guy, pop quizzes can be difficult but if you take good notes and sit next to smart people they're manageable. Exams are not hard, its easy to get close to a 100% on them. Homework is all done online, but you get unlimited tries for each question. Made calc straightforward and interesting, take him!
Heckman is an amazing professor and I would highly recommend to take him if you have a chance. The exams reflect the pop quizzes he gives in class. The homework has unlimited attempts.
Heckman for calc was amazing. He was straightforward in his lectures, and offered numerous examples. There were pop quizzes that got pretty difficult, but he allows you to work with the people next to you and often curves them, allowing for extra credit. If you go to lecture and do the homework, the exams are cake.
DAVE HECKMAN IS THE BEST PROFESSOR EVER. This man is a real big brain and knows so much about calculus. He is very good at explaining things and made lectures entertaining always. You could talk to the people around you during pop quizzes so they really were not that bad. Heckman is a true calculus icon, 10/10 would recommend even if you hate math
Nice enough guy but terrible professor. No syllabus up the entire year. This meant the entire class had no idea what his policies were, when the exams were, and how to contact him. However it doesnt matter anyway because he doesnt have office hours. I suggest avoiding this professor ESPECIALLY if you struggle with math.
Heeckman doesn't really care about his students. He puts stuff off, doesn't have office hours, and is horrible at explaining things. He isn't funny at all. He told his class he hates his job. His best quality is wasting time.
PLEASE AVOID THIS CLASS IF YOU WANT TO PASS! you'll teach yourself everything. He isn't clear, he doesn't explain things, hes an awful prof. Take anyone else if you want to pass
I always try to give professors the benefit of the doubt when reading reviews. But if youre looking for a sign of whether or not to take this class, this is it. This class is extremely boring and youll end up teaching yourself anyway. Not to mention there is so syllabus and hes pretty much unreachable with no office hours.
Really good guy! He will help you 100%. If you struggle with math, sit in the front of the class. I am not good at math and I thought I would fail, but I really hung in there and he helped me get to where I needed to be. Homework 2-3 times a week. Pop quizzes, 2 are dropped. 3 Exams: 2 in semester, 1 noncumulative during finals. :)
David is probably a good guy, but as a professor he is absolutely awful. Get ready to teach yourself everything, heckman is very unclear and doesn't care about his students and their needs and engagement. Plus, NO SYLLABUS UP ALL YEAR.
I would not take this course with Heckmen, he does not know how to explain anything and he talks at you for the entire lecture and does not encourage participation. Complains about his life way to much and takes forever to get your grades back. He is consistently unfocused in class and is not helpful in office hours or through email.
Heckman is a good guy but he is not the best at explaining information, and he does not always finish the math problems. Quizzes and hw are worth nothing compared to quizzes, if you fail a quiz you are basically done unless you do really good on the other 2. If you have trouble with math this is not your teacher
I took his class over summer and it was great. Concepts built on each other, his teaching was clear, he helped out on homework and made everything very manageable. Calculus in 5 weeks is not the easiest but he made it as painless as possible. He's funny and laid back, super nice guy.
I personally didn't like his style of teaching or attitude towards some students, but that might just be me. Sometimes rude when you ask questions, but he really knows what he's talking about. Mostly just rely on his videos and watch them before class since he loves pop quizzes (which happen almost every other class)
I know the grade I got was not the best, but LISTEN! Calculus was hard, I struggled with it, and the ONLY reason I passed was because of this man. He has so many helpful videos online and his exams are MUCH easier than you would think. You can work w others on the quizzes and its pretty much a way to help boost your grade.
Im going to be honest, when I took this class I was not too fond of the professor because of his ratings. Let me tell you, hes NOT bad, the subject was hard but Prof Heckman was so helpful and provided a lot of resources to help us succeed in his class.
Professor Heckman is great at teaching! This semester was odd, but in class he was very specific with what he expected from students and always tried to make sure the class understood. His pre-class videos are a definite must, otherwise it's easy to get lost. Also, the pop quizzes double as attendance!
His lectures are kind of dull but is pretty good at teaching the material. If you've taken calc before you'll pass. He makes you go to class by giving a surprise pop quiz every week on a random day. There is a bit of homework but it is manageable. You're not allowed to use calculators on tests but you won't really need one either.
I love professor Heckman!! I had taken this course two years ago with a different professor and got a D. I am currently in his class and have an A! He is very helpful with answering questions and keeps the class light with fun jokes. Calculus is hard, if you dont put in the work you wont do well, but Heckman is an excellent professor and teacher.
Lectures were scribbled on microsoft paint; not saved or recorded. This means attendance is mandatory. Video sources were outdated from a different professor. He changed the testing format halfway through the semester. Final exam was stated cumulative, but was very onesided half of which was taught 2 days prior to exam. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND. 0 STARS
I genuinely really like him as a person. He does try to make class entertaining even with the online circumstances that it was placed under when I took the class. The biggest issue that I had is he shows when he is frustrated with student's for not understanding the material, then it makes it more difficult to want to try. Grading is difficult.
I took him B session summer remote and honestly he's a great professor. Funny and interesting lectures, and no surprises on the tests. Be prepared to work though, Calc 2 is very tedious.
drops 3 lowest pop quizzes but don't get lazy: SHOW UP! lectures are standard and not the worst; he has videos that can help you. not great w/ email so if you have a question, ask in class via the zoom chat. tests aren't hard, but not easy (they are NOT lockdown browser). its calc. the amount of effort you put in the class will show with your grade
I really liked professor Heckman! He is funny and keeps us entertained in class and his in class examples are easy to follow. If I was struggling with a concept I could always watch the video on it from his website (highly recommend). He has lots of pop quizzes but his tests arent too hard. He doesnt really answer emails though.
He is the best! Super funny and cute. He added extra credit to our non-cumulative "final" exam and really helped during every class. About 3-4 pop quizzes per exam cycle, but he drops a few at the end of the semester. Held review sessions before every exam on his own time and showed he really cared. I'll miss him for sure!
Heckman was really funny! He has a website that has mini-lectures of all the material we go over, so if you're ever stuck on something it was super helpful to go on that website and review. He held review sessions for each class, and he made jokes a lot which was fun. He also was super nice on tests, never giving us problems that required calcs.
Heckman teaches everything you need to know. There are no surprises on his tests; lecture questions match up perfectly to the exam questions. There are pop quizzes but they're actually harder than the tests but tests are worth way more anymore. Heckman is super nice and understanding. Definitely would take again.
Overall a good professor as he explained his work thoroughly and would work through problems during lecture. The homework is valuable and the tests are straightforward. After taking calculus in high school this course was a breeze.
I actually don't have this professor, but I watch his videos for MAT251. My teacher (Zhang) doesn't do the best job. Instead of going to my class, I watch David Heckman's videos. I truly am passing this class because of the videos he makes. Even if you don't choose this professor, you should definitely keep in mind his resources :)
Like others, I haven't taken this professor, but I would. I watch his videos working through problems for MAT 265: Calculus for Engineers I. His explanations are clear and simple. He also draws a smiley face at the end of every video which makes the pain of studying calculus bearable.
