Very Very demanding, a lot of work-- if u start well there is a chance you can do good. he gives extra credit, but is a tough grader and perfectionist.
This class was difficult in the begining, until you find out what he expects for assignments. I was considering dropping, but after a few weeks realized I was making the material more difficult. One five page paper a week, double spaced over the readings, and for the last 7-8 assign I didn't read. The final was all opinion, do ec for easy A
Good professor, demands you to think critically. I actually enjoyed his class i will resommend him to anyone.
Have taken 2 classes from him already. If you pay attention to what he says in class then essays are cake. He expects you to think critically but it isn't as difficult as it seems. He gives over 15% of extra credit so makes getting an A easy!
The syllabus said to write a 2-3 page paper every week. After we turned in the first few, Hinds began spending large amounts of classtime yelling at us for not writing 6+ pages, and he graded us as if we should have been doing that much. He also will cancel assignments by email the night before they're due, or wait until you've brought it to class.
Great Professor! Pay attention in class and do the readings( even just skim them and you'll be fine). He really strives to get his students to think critically. He is just as engaging with his white students as he is with his black students. Easy to get an "A", lots of extra credit.
While Hinds is very knowledgeable and passionate, his tests are extremely hard.
Did not enjoy him or his class at all. Did not use Blackboard, all texts chosen were by him or his friends, directions were shoddily given (if at all) and then he'd become angry when we didn't meet his unexplained requirements. I do not recommend him.
Brilliant man, challenges you to think critically. Discussion format, independent thoughts/experience encouraged & helps grade significantly. Not good at making expectations clear in assignments. Tests are challenging, but easier than assignments. Would recommend Hinds to anyone with a strong work ethic. Hope to take another of his classes.
Did not make assignments clear, and would get upset if the class did not understand the expectations. Papers are hard, due to the rigor he grades with. I would not recommend this class to anyone who values their GPA.
Dr. Hinds is a very passionate instructor. This is the reason why he may clash with students at times. Overall, if you attend lectures, pay attention, do all the readings and apply the theories you learn to whatever material you are studying, you will get an A. Dr. Hinds gives a lot of extra credit so take advantage of it!!
Music as Political Discourse. He has unlimited knowledge/expert of the subject; terrible at conveyed it to students. Lyrics are your texts so listen carefully. Great topic, however he expected graduate level work for undergraduate course. Challenge yourself and wiling to see the GPA goes down, then go ahead. Otherwise, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!
Music as Political Discourse-Great topic. He has unlimited knowledge/expert of the subject; terrible at conveyed them to students. Expected grad level work for undergrad course. Lyrics are your text so listen every single word. Challenge yourself and willing to see the GPA drops, then go ahead with this class. Otherwise, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!
Intro to African Studies with Hinds is a class I took online. I thought I would learn a lot, but instead learned nothing. He posted no lectures, gave very unclear expectations, and was a difficult grader with no feedback whatsoever. DO NOT take Hinds online if you want a good grade; just read the book on your own.
Race & Racism course-Man Dr. Hind's class is hard! He has high expectations. All his test are writting responses to define terms/concepts covered in class. DONT MISS CLASS. He doesn't take off points but you need everybit of teaching. VERY HELPFUL not always so clear. Study groups saved me and several others. we all passed with good grades.
Terrible online class. Very demanding. Impossible to communicate with teacher. Seems to have no interest in helping students.
This guy is discriminatory to whites and mexicans. And the class is just an excuse to sell his cheap book.
I have taken 4 of his classes. This man is principled, clear, to the point, and difficult. You must work for a grade, read all material, show up, take notes, and listen. He means what he says. Listen carefully! This is how college should be. He knows his stuff. Respect him, he will respect you. There is much to be gained here. Good luck.
Dr Hinds is a passionate instructor. However, his tests are very hard. Everything is fair game and you have to essentially have a photographic memory to remember it all. Great instructor and passionate, but his tests are ridiculous.
Sometimes I could not understand what he was saying through his accent. Your grades are based on four tests you take, which are difficult. Before the first test, I went to every single class and took in-depth notes and still received a bad grade. This class is about Bob Marley, reggae, and resistance, which I thought would be fun. DO NOT TAKE.
I took Dr. Hinds class this fall semester and it was great. His lectures are good and also critical in passing his course. I would recommend reading and going over the material before every class because he elaborates on them and if you don't read the books you will be lost. His test are straight from the book and lectures. Overall great class.
Best teacher and best class ever! Very difficult, but so interesting. Dr. Hinds has a way of teaching that makes you excited about the material, and although he may seem a little scary or intimidating, he cares about his students and he's passionate about what he teaches! Would definitely take another class taught by him
This professor does not care about his students. Several times in class, (because of his accent, some information can be misheard) students would ask him to repeat himself and he would just say "You should have been listening, that information will be on the test." This class was just very frustrating, I would have enjoyed it with a different prof.
This dude is just not a good teacher. All we do is watch videos and then he picks out very specific things to put onto his tests. Im sitting in his class now and hate it so much so I had to say something. DONT TAKE HIS CLASS
To be successful in this course you need to buy the CourseHero notes. Terrible teacher, completely random test questions.
This guy is absolutely one of the worste professors I have ever had. Unless your from Jamaica and no every minor detail, that Bob Marley himself probably didn't know. I would not recommend taking this class
This man is one of the worst professors i have every had. He is rude and utterly uneducated on etiquette. He expects you to memorize 20+ songs then take an exam and know everything about those songs. However he thinks that this class does not need studying and that there is a complete difference between studying and memorizing. One word. STUPID.
Dr. Hinds gives awesome lectures and has very clear expectations for his class. He is funny and passionate, which makes class entertaining. As long as you go to every class, read the book (which is super short and easy), pay attention to the videos/lectures, and take good notes, you will do good.
This is actually the first review I've written for a professor, and I'm doing this now because Dr. Hinds is by far the best professor I've taken at ASU. He is incredibly intelligent and the most qualified to teach this subject. His passion, humor, and intellect make each lecture intriguing. He's made me very passionate about the Caribbean.
In order to do well in this class, you have to attend the lectures and pay attention, and do the reading. Nothing about this class is difficult if you listen and pay attention to his expectations. That being said, Dr. Hinds is a phenomenal instructor and genuinely wants his students to succeed and to think critically.
One of the best professors at ASU!If you take the time to talk to him and clarify about his expectations, he will help you out. His professional and personal experience contribute to some of the most passionate lectures you will EVER hear in a university setting - TAKE THIS CLASS if you're interested in the topic and willing to put in the effort!
Not a good professor, doesn't want you to be successful in the course. Barely teaches, most wath Youtube documentaries for the majority of the semester.
Dr. Hinds is a great professor and I'm sad this class is over. I had decent knowledge of Bob Marley & his songs prior to taking this class, but Dr. Hinds presented fascinating perspectives and connections to modern social issues. The grade is based on 4 exams so show up. Exam questions were frequently from his lectures & were not found in the book.
Not a good teacher and doesn't want students to be successful in course. I know many students cheated with CourseHero and StudyBlue to get an A. Regardless this class sucks along with the professor. He just wants to overcome the stigma attached to Bob Marley. Doesn't teach for the first half of the semester but has students watch videos. Don't do i
While I can tell that Professor Hinds is knowledgable of his craft, I would never take a course with him again. Dr. Hinds is too smart for his own good, as he is not open to any suggestion. He's a "my way or the highway" type of guy.
I studied really hard in this class and genuinely believe that I have a pretty good grasp of the material but still failed. Unless you want to completely trash your GPA I strongly suggest finding a different professor. Yes, even his class on Bob Marley was impossible to pass.
I learned SO much in this class and HIGHLY recommend it to people who want to learn more about the Caribbean. Dr. Hinds is somewhat intimidating, has very high expectations, but he genuinely wants students to succeed. Go to his office hours! He appreciates you putting in effort. Grades: 3 5pg papers worth 10% each and 3 exams worth 20, 30, and 20%
Plays a lot of Youtube videos that are harder to understand. If you ask a question he will not answer and if he does it is not a clear answer. Calls people out for showing up late. No study guides for the tests so it is unclear what you will even be tested on. No homework, so tests are the only thing that goes toward your grade. cheap book.
Definitely my favorite professor for my first semester of college.
DON'T take AFR200 if you want an easy A. Material is interesting, but the structure is terrible. He's also angry/intimidating. Lectures are great, but rare. Instead, he makes you watch long documentaries. Entire course grade is 4 exams, all are VERY difficult: no multiple choice, asks for specific details/dates/names from the documentaries.
Hard to believe out of all my classes (including calc, adv. eng, and CIS) this was my lowest grade. Says that if you go to class, the tests will be easy. Average grade for tests were C's, no multiple choice. This professor does not accept questions, is extremely biased, seems to hate America, and makes people feel stupid if they do not agree.
Professor Hinds, only exams, no homework. Attend every lecture and you will still do horrible no matter if you write down every word that comes out of his mouth. He grades tests and lots of people had issues with him incorrectly grading their paper and he would refuse to have made a grading error and would scream at them. Strict, and rude.
The professor is very knowledgeable, but he spends a lot of the class calling out kids on their phone or for coming in late. Exams are about 50 questions, non-multiple choice, so if you don't have a good memory don't take this class. The content of the class is very enjoyable, you will definitely learn a lot about Pan Africanism Rastafarianism & BM
I took Professor Hinds for the 1 credit hour version of his Bob Marley & Reggae class and loved it! His lectures are super interesting and he knows the subject material very well. We had to buy kind of an expensive textbook for the class that was only used a few times though.
A lot of people on here are salty. Yes, he only gives 5 tests. Yes, he will insult you if you ask a ridiculous question. About half of the questions on his "50 question" tests were always extra credit. You have to put in effort to learn the material if you want to do well. Respect him and he will respect you. Don't take if hoping for an easy A.
10/10!! Professor Hinds is tough but very passionate. If you have an interest in this subject or are passionate about it, then I HIGHLY recommend this class. Take good notes and write down titles of videos from class and rewatch them to study. He gives answers to tests in class so go to class! If you are willing to put in the work than it is easy!
I had this professor for JUS 215: Bob Marley Lyrics of resistance. This professor is super loud and has a THICK Caribbean accent. Almost half of his class was these weird old BBC documentaries from the 90's and we were expected to understand every little detail from the film on the test. Not a great teacher and did not give study guides for tests.
Tests are hard and there's no credit outside of these tests. In my class there was no study guide for quizzes and exams . Lectures are not always helpful and he speaks with a thick accent. Easily the loudest human I've ever met. He gives his political opinions in class, while I agree with what he has to say, it's not his place to speak on politics
When reviewing what will be on the upcoming quiz, he will go off an a tangent the whole class period and then the quiz wont even have the information he was discussing
He is very emotional and lets himself get mad about students being "disrespectful" and will go off on a tangent for 20 minutes because one person left .2 seconds early. He mainly plays documentaries with very heavy accents and its basically a note taking class with like only 4 grades in the grade book the whole semester. MUST Pay attention
I would take all of his courses if I could! He is one of the most knowledgeable, passionate, and well-rounded professors I have come across in a long time. He doesn't believe in failing students, but that means that you are expected to work hard! He will challenge you and push you to think critically as you mature through your college years.
Professor Hinds runs a very attendance mandatory course. But, he has some of the best lectures i have ever been to. He is so passionate, well spoken, and unbiased in all ways. He will push you hard and wont go easy, but i seriously can say he is one of the most insparational teachers ive had in a very long time.
I took Dr. Hinds for his Bob Marley course. His class is easy if you show up and take notes. You have 5 quizzes the whole semester but they're fairly easy questions if you've paid attention to the videos and lectures. And there's always easy extra credit questions at the end of each quiz. You MUST go to class though to get a good grade.
Took the Bob Marley class. If you are looking for an easy A this is not the class for you. I had a great semester all A's and B's, and got a D in this class. He does not respond to emails. Puts questions on the quiz that were not in the lectures. Only 5 tests in grade book- and that's it. Thought this was going to be easiest class, but was hardest.
I took the Bob Marley course. Professor Hinds is very passionate while teaching, and although he can be intimidating at times, he's an awesome teacher. There are five quizzes throughout the semester, and all the answers are given to you. No joke, he directly gives you the answers in your notes as long as you pay attention. Loved the class!
Easy if you show up and pay attention. The only grades are 5 quizzes but theres no final and he Usually announces test questions and every test has a lot of extra credit questions. Hinds gives great lectures and is actually pretty funny.
This class sounds easy, but it is very hard. He takes this very seriously, you get yelled at if you're on your phone, tests are insanely hard like "Bob Marley's home address" etc. You have to buy and read his book for the answers, no study guides, me and my friends in the class always got 85% or less on those tests. I got a B- in the class.
Truly incompetent. The majority of his class is watching YouTube videos, from which he picks random facts for his test questions. Many questions from his tests aren't relevant or are mentioned only once. When he does lecture, he is extremely vague and criticizes the students openly for being lazy, even if everyone fails. He shouldn't be a teacher.
Dr. Hinds does seem to care about the topic of his course but could care less about his students understanding of the material. Even if you attend class every day and give 100% effort you will still fail the exams. After asking for help the first time I was instructed to just "remember.
Truly the least constructive professor Ive had during my time at ASU. He couldnt care less whether students understood the material. Graded solely on 5 quizzes which consist of questions like what was Marleys home address. Dr. Hinds stated that all you have to do is remember to get the correct answer on these ridiculous questions. Just remember.
No electronics allowed and he does not use ppts. This was hard, but he is so passionate and educated on the topics. This was one of my fave classes in college bc I learned so so much. If you show up and commit yourself, it will be an incredibly eye-opening course.
Actually the worst teacher ever. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. He wrote our textbook and simply said read the book without giving page numbers or chapters to read or anything. Zero homework assignments. Gave ONLY tests. Class once a week and the other class is you watching youtube videos by yourself. His tests were 45 short answer questions in 20 minute
I literally made an account on this site just to give this dude a bad review. He straight up does not care about his students or their grade at all. The only grades all semester are 5 quizzes that are all around 50 written questions with a 30min time limit. Quizzes are graded about a month late, errors in grading, does not allow students to ask Q's
Dude straight-up sucks. Never thought a Bob Marley class would be the hardest class I take at University. there are 5 tests and that's the whole grade book. He also makes so many mistakes grading the tests and when you confront him about it he gets super angry and says you're "bullying" him. Never take this guy, the worst professor I have ever had.
Don't take him. Just don't do it, please save yourself. This is the only B I have received and I spent 3x as much time studying for this class than any other classes, and I have taken "harder" classes. Timed tests (1 hour) with 30+ short answer questions that are very specific niche questions that you are not warned or prepared for, closed note.
Professor Hinds is one of the worst I've taken here. He'll never give you an upfront answer when you ask a question, instead he'll make you feel stupid for even asking in the first place. His test questions aren't content based, it's all rote memorization. He has an accent which is hard to understand but god forbid you ask him to repeat himself
Professor Hinds is the classic, "put the movie on and take notes" professor. He puts the minimal possible effort into the course, and is extremely insecure when anybody so much as comments on his lecture style, course structure, or quiz material. The quizzes are horrendous fill-in-the-blank memorization rather than an assessment of understanding.
Expected the class to be relatively easy, turned out to be my hardest class. He grades only off of 5 assignments based on bad lectures where he barely speaks on questions that will come up on the tests. His accent is super hard to understand and he doesn't take any form of criticism well at all.
So the class was okay, he was a great teacher, its just the tests are so hard and super specific and he gives u like one day heads up for them. If u want an A, youll have to read the chapters a couple times and the videos a couple times and take amazing notes, but if u just need to pass, its a pretty fun class and he is a super passionate prof.
I took this class thinking it would be an easy class. He has no slides for notes, the only notes are based off of what he says or some low quality videos. The only grades in the class are 5 quizzes which are mad hard. I went to every single class and got F's on every single quiz. If you want an easy class and good grade do not take.
If I could rate this class in the negatives I would. Please please please read and listen to these reviews because I really wish I wouldve. Save yourself. Professor Hinds should be re-evaluated as a professor here, as he is the laziest most incompetent teacher I have taken. 5 quizzes only & and accent almost impossible to understand. Dropped!!
I wouldn't take this class again purely because of the style of test. It is 5 quizzes throughout the term that are 100% memorisation and very specific questions. I completely disagree with the comment on Hinds' accent, it easy to understand. The topic and content of the course was super interesting but often questions were left unanswered !
Very bad instructor, he is hard to understand and gets mad when asked questions. Do not take any of his classes at all costs do not want anyone else going through what I had to do not make the same mistake as me.
Extremely derogatory. Will not respond to emails. Doesn't post grades til the end of the semester. Average scores on exam was a 40, no curve. Talks about the most random things and expects us to remember specific phrases for the exams (which are short answer). He doesn't have lecture slides. Also he openly supports Russia invading Ukraine.
Lectures all class "Tells you what's going to be on the quiz" or so he says. He says 100 different things are going to be on the quiz and that's just from his lectures, that doesn't include the videos and readings he wants you to take notes from. Your 40-question quiz that your supposed to know all the answers because he gave you the answers. Joke
I cannot stress this enough DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. The class consists of 5 quizzes that make up for 100% of your grade. During the classes prior to these quizzes you will be watching hour long videos each class and taking notes on them. Some information won't even be in the videos. The average for this first quiz was 15. Just don't take this class
The whole class is based off of 5 tests that are based off of a months worth of material. You must remember every word that comes out of his mouth in that month, because I guarantee it will be on the test. He does not care about you or your grade, he acts like you should know everything he says by heart, and assumes that you know everything.
Refuses to use Canvas and most of the quiz questions come from hour-long videos that you watch in class and are often on particular things that most people wouldn't think to write down. Also doesn't answer emails and does not put due dates on Canvas, making it very hard to prepare for exams and essays. Overall just not a good professor
Do not take Bob Marley reggae and Resistance with Dr. Hinds. During the first half of the semester, he played youtube videos every single class. Your whole grade revolves around 5 quizzes on these videos. The questions are wildly specific. Nothing is on canvas so if you miss a class you are screwed. Studying for his tests is a guessing game.
WORST CLASS EVER. Grades were solely based on 5 exams. By the end of the class, EVERYONE had given up and just accepted their fate. My BIGGEST regret was not dropping this horrible class when I had the chance. If you think this class will be fun, you are MISTAKEN. Save yourself the trouble and take another class.
DO NOT TAKE!!! Graded on attendance and 5 tests. Must remember everything he or a poor-quality video says the first time because it will be on the tests and he won't repeat himself or share video. Will berate students for asking questions to clarify what he says. Will berate the class for slacking/disrespect when one person slips up.
I was slightly intimidated by all of the bad reviews on this professor before taking the class, but now I have only a week left in this course and I'm about to finish with over a 104% in the class. The tests are super straightforward and include tons of extra credit questions. That being said, Hinds is an underrated and excellent instructor.
I liked Professor Hinds, but he didn't post grades on Canvas until the last few weeks, he has a thick accent that was sometimes hard to understand, and if you don't go to every class, you'll miss important information since little details are on the tests. He does give you a lot of the test questions in class, though, and there is extra credit.
If you are looking for an easy A, none of his courses will be for you. He is passionate in what he teaches and is more than willing to help you if you actually show up to class and put in the effort. He gives you exactly what will be on the exam. The professor is very knowledgeable and I have no problem with his Caribbean accent.
Worst professor Ive ever had at asu. No other words needed
