Wonderful professor. Always open for opinions and controversy. Really great guy. Extremely interesting classes.
Great professor, interesting material, fun classes - you can express yourself
Great professor, Highly recommended class.
Best teacher I've ever had the college. He's not easy, but presents the material in an enjoyable way, which makes it easier on yourself. Be prepared to think, use your brain... and give good feedback. Take this teacher, you won't regret it.
Great Professor, YOU ROCK HINTON
He's a great teacher! He makes everything interesting and provokes great conversation
He's really good teacher, works with you if you are struggling, and he's a nice guy
this is an awesome class, you'll learn a ton, and the great thing is -- he keeps it INTERESTING! this is a class that you'd normally fall asleep in even if you like gov... but definitely not in this case. it's a challenging class, but worth it!
awesome teacher...makes things clear so that not only the "brain" children in the class can understand him...take this class!!! hes awesome and helpful!
Hinton is a nice guy, and is helpful. He isnt too hard that you cry, or too easy that you don't learn anything. Also, he is very approachable, and doesn't mind talking to you.
good teacher. not too hard if you do the reading.
he's a great teacher. i have a 2 hour 45 min class with him which would suck if anyone else taught it. he keeps me and my add self interested for almost 3 hours.
best teacher I have ever had.
250 was tailor made for him. Unlike many professors, he doesn't look down on his students and still seems to be struggling with the same philosophical question's that he's introducing to his students, which helps make the class VERY interesting!!
Absolutely brilliant man who never lets you stop thinking for yourself, even though the course was all about what others thought. Forbid the class from calling him "Mister Hinton" because it's derived from the word "master." Take him a
I've had him 2x now and I can say that there is no professor at CofC that I have more respect for. The guy is brilliant and makes the class feel like the collective IQ is on the rise just from being there. I'm not even a Pol Sci major, I take him for fun.
Hinton is very intelligent and passionate about his subjects. He's the most interesting proffesor i've ever had and his liberal, rebellious bent keeps class fresh. kicks butt
I really liked this class David made it fun and worth going to, I was never confused or bored. This is a class that I looked forward to. . .
Conspiracy theories out the wazzoo! If you hate the govt and enjoy listening to balogna for hours, this class is for you! He's also very moody.
Probably the best teacher at the college, no joke. Tests are all essay, but strangely enough, I started to like them, that is the kind of thing that happens in his classes. You will find yourself interested whether you like it or not.
David is one of the most laid-back professors; on election day he wore his Bob Marley shirt, Even though he is extremely intelligent, he never makes you feel ignorant. Weekly current events quizzes, which suck. Exams style is awesome bc he tests for what you know instead of what you don't. Awsome!
Tests are an absolute breeze, no surprise questions. Quizzes every now and then and nothing else. Beware the 7 page paper-do it ahead of time(he gives the whole semester). Lectures are interesting and for a 8am class, thats saying alot.
Mr. Hinton is one of the best teachers I have ever had. He is so relaxed. I even had lunch with him. He gives you what you need to know. He is just an excellent person. I hope to keep contact with him after his class.
DAVID IS ONE OF THE BEST PROFESSORS I HAVE EVER HAD. EVEN AT 8AM, WHICH HE ADMITTEDLY DOESN'T PREFER HIMSELF, HE WAS INTERESTING TO LISTEN TO AND FUNNY! AS A POLSCI MAJOR, I LOOK FORWARD TO MANY MORE CLASSES WITH HIM. AND HE'S SO NICE TO LOOK AT FIRST THING IN THE AM
He is veryy informative and a captivating lecturer. I actually enjoyed attending his class, which is saying a lot, considering I do not regularly attend classes. He got the class involved in every interesting discussion, and even his essay exams were to the point.
possibly a good teacher, i do not recommend him for express courses.
Whoever put that last comment about express classes is retarded! If you read the news before class, and take good notes, you're set. Tests are essays and you get a choice. If you study for the tests and keep up with the news, there's no reason not to get @ least a B, speak up in class, u'll get an A
excellent professor...it's hard not to change your perspective on the world after you take this class. be prepared to write to s@itload of papers
He tends to lecture very biasedly and his express courses are kind of packed. He's a fun teacher to have discussions with but his information is very very vague someimtes so it's hard to take notes correctly or know what assignments are meant to be.
I found his lectures liberally biased. As one sided as he seemed though, in the end, he graded fairly. He can def. spark you to speak up and it pays off in the end IF YOU SPEAK UP! SPEAK UP!!!!
Great professor. Young, energetic, and highly intelligent. He quotes Chomsky for ****'s sake, how can he not be awesome. Expect long papers, and if you are one of the many ignorant children of conservative southerners that attend CofC, expect to have your puny thoughts challenged.
David is a very informative teacher and knows his stuff. Attend all classes and keep up with current events and reading the material. If you are willing to put in the effort this class is worth it.
Hinton is by far the best teacher I have had in all years of schooling. He not only keeps class interesting but is an awesome teacher and actually makes you want to go to class and learn. Put some effort into it and your sure to get an A. Also- you can be exempt from the final if you have an A average.
He is a wonderful teacher. His lectures are very interesting and fun. Speak up in class; he likes that. If you are liberal you will enjoy him. Two 7 page papers in the course & two essay exams. If you study and understand the concepts you will do well. There is a lot of reading, but it should be expected. One of the best professors I have ever had.
Fabulous teacher! Thoroughly enjoyed going to class each night -- express course so the classes were long too! I was disappointed when the class was over. I would highly recommend Hinton to anyone. Lectures are always interesting. Keep up with current events, study for the tests, and speak in class, and you'll be fine!
David is an amazing professor. After taking this class, you willl never look at the world in the same way again. Really nice, interesting guy. I wish he taught 251! Readings are tough, but he goes over them. Take him.
Truely the best teacher at CofC. You could not ask for a better class, especially at 8am. I never go to classes that early but I wanted to go to this one. He is helpful, he makes the material understandible, and he is hilarious. Why would you take any other teacher? I wish he taught more classes! Plus he is super hot!! You are the best Prof Hinton!
He is one of the best professors at CofC! A liberal (not the stereotypical image where all that one stands for is abortion), but a comprehensive liberal, but expect to have your thoughts respectfully challenged during the course no matter where you lie along the political spectrum. Do the reading, & you'll prob. get an A.
Awesome professor, took express 1 and he cancelled 2 separate classes and never kept us past 815. Very intelligent and respectful.
i loved hinton.. he breaks down the material and applies it to the larger world in an amazing way--he is a genius.. he is very fair and not tough.. if it wasn't for the fact that he has a child (and i'm assuming a wife) i think i would like to marry him
i took him for american gov. he is very easy all you have to do is show up for class and take good notes test are eassy form but very easy comes str8 from notes and plus he give you a study guide and the class is not boring at all cool teacher would highly recommend
Amazingly insightful and intersting guy.
Hinton is just absolutely the bomb diggity dank. For real, this class was incredibly interesting and enlightening. Tests are not bad at all. Take Hinton whenever you can. I'm not a polysci major and I LOVED this class.
i loved this class.. hintons lectures are always funny and interesting. he didnt exactly stick to the notes every time but he always made everything relate to current events etc. his tests were short answer mostly and we had one essay. he let you rewrite it if you got a bad grade too and gives good feedback if you go see him in his office.
I'm normally pretty grouchy if I have to wake up before noon, but I looked forward to Hinton's 8 am class. This guy is extremely intelligent and very funny. He likes it when you speak up. People keep calling him liberal but I didn't think he was biased in lectures at all; he challenges every viewpoint and really makes you think. I loved this class.
Got a killer perspective on life.
He really knows alot about the material and the world in general. Easy to approach and gives fair tests. Kind of hard but if you do the reading and show up to class you should do fine. One of the best profs at the college!
The class itself sucks but Hinton makes it as good as possible. He is EXTREMELY intelligent and attempts to get some feedback from the class. You have to at least try to do the (hard) readings otherwise you will have no idea what he is talking about. Hinton is one of the best profs at CofC
Completely no help...if you ask for it, he gets mad; had I known he was so irritating and confusing in regards to Political Philosophy, I would not have taken his class. Beware!!!
Hinton has trouble understanding that "discussion" class implies someone else besides him talks. In terms of grading, he's pretty midline as far as West Civ goes, but he's fairly helpful and approachable. However if you don't react how he wants you to or you disagree with his quasi-socialist liberal politics, don't expect him to like you very much.
Class was supposed to be a discussion but it was spent hearing Hinton ramble on his extremist views. If you don't agree with him or don't pretend to, well then good luck. You must participate in this class to receive a decent grade.
250 was difficult for me because I'm not big into philosophy but I felt that he was fair and helpful (particularlly with the term paper which I got an A on) He has some very interesting viewpoints and so keep an open mind and hear what he has to say, unlike many of these posts I do not feel that he shut out people who did not agree with him.
Great class.Professor can get a bit erratic at times.. but if you keep up with the news, review notes and PARTICIPATE in class discussions... then u can't fail!
Funny guy but he talks too much. Keep up with the news, reading, take notes, and participate in class discussion. Our class had to write a 7 page paper on a political issue and the grading was rough. Overall, great class. Take it with him if you have a chance.
Nice guy but sometimes has attitude. long readings for each class, 2 tests, a short response paper, presentation, and a final. Can miss 8 classes. He gives study guides of exactly what will be on the exams. Kind of hard to talk to during offices hours since he only has like 2hrs per week and is an adjunct so he isnt in his office any other times.
He's completely arrogant. I will say he's quite intelligent and knows the philosophy for sure, but all that is undone by his attitude. He doesn't respect his students at all, and he only cares about his own point of view (and I'm saying this as someone who agreed with him most of the time). I hated going to class. Avoid if possible.
I loved Professor Hinton's class. Very helpful, always interesting and fun. He knows what he is talking about and takes a different approach to the topics he teaches. I can't believe the people who say he isn't awesome. I loved going to his class. Take him if yo get the chance!
There is a lot of reading but if you keep up, you will do fine. Very interesting class and great professor!
Hinton really makes you think and fight for your grade. He knows exactly when you are bsing him, especially on his tests which just goes to show he knows his craft. A lot of reading, but you find you don't always need to read everything. 2 tests, final (but if you get As on both test your exempted), 20 source annotated bib. can miss 8 classes.
Prof Hinton is AMAZING! I wish he taught more lower level Poli-Sci classes. I can't wait to get to 250 so I can take his classes again! You have to work for your grade, but he is always willing to help you out if you show you are actually trying. Funny guy. Very nice. I HIGHLY recommend his class.
Interesting, enthusiastic and always willing to help
POLS 101 with Hinton was an easy going class you have one big paper but he is an easy grader. Random quizes on New York Times but the tests are fairly easy short essay style and quizes multiple choice.
Hinton is the man. Super entertaining to listen to. The material BLOWS, but he really does make it as interesting as it can possibly be made. Best 8am I ever had. I loved listening to him talk. Definitely favorite class of the semester. Keep up with the reading and go to class and an A is inevitable.
I hate Poli-Sci and have never really been interested in it, but I feel like I need to let people know that this was probably the best TEACHER I have ever had in college. His material is conveyed very clearly and he knows what he's talking about ... no B.S. - good guy. AND he actually values your opinion which ends up being a big part of the class!
he makes a lot of jokes and is pretty funny, which makes the class somewhat bearable but the material he teaches is GOD awful. hes nice though and pretty easy. i recommend taking him if you have to take a government class, he'll make it pretty interesting. hes a HUGE liberal though and its annoying
Great professor. Extremely enthusiastic and helpful. The readings are difficult, but he successfully makes them interesting. Always looked forward to his class. Do not be afraid to speak up. He loves it.
Great teacher, chill guy. Provides textbook and interesting insight. Makes politics/government interesting...
Avoid this man at all costs. He is extremely arrogant and only cares about his own opinion and views. He is not helpful at all, never clearly answered a question. He made me hate politics since he spends the whole class complaining about the government. Oh and he's an amish pirate.....
Professor Hinton is great! His grading is weird but he is always willing to help. I got a 76 on the first exam and I went to argue for more points back, he gave me 10 before I could finish talking. You have to pay attention but readings aren't that required. He likes you to keep up with current events which is great. Take him!
Professor Hinton is very funny and very well-informed about the subject. The class, on the War on Drugs and the War on Terrorism, is fascinating and in-depth. The research papers are tough and assignments could use some clarity, but all in all it's a great course by a great professor.
I took American Gov't for a prereq for the PoliSci minor. Turned out being one of the best classes that I have taken and it was because of David. He's awesome. Literally just do what he says and speak up in class. He is really helpful if you go to his office hours and pretty understanding. I'm taking 2 of his classes this semester! Recommend
Since it's an express class it was jam packed for the full three hours. Its a long class and if you aren't interested in the topics then it will suck. The tests are long and hard, there is no study guide just a list of terms that he has thrown out during class. All lecture based no slides and random words written on board. He is nice and helpful.
My favorite teacher at CofC, he really connects with students and is very passionate about teaching and his political ideas.
This professor thinks that his opinion is correct & above everyone else's. DO NOT i repeat DO NOT take this class if you have republican views because you will be torn down by him. His tests do not reflect his lectures at all and barley any of the information in the books were on the tests. Very bright man and funny as well! good teacher? Nope.
Super Liberal dude, but he knows the content very well. He is very arrogant and his lectures are impossible to take notes off of, oh and the tests are a bunch of random words that may or may not have been in his lectures. This was one of the hardest courses I have ever taken and I would definitely avoid taking it. I hate political science now.
I used to like Professor Hinton. I still think he's a cool guy after class. But, the whole class period he would talk about current events (which is awesome), rather than the material he tests on. So when the test came a lot of people failed because he tests on really obscure terms. He should test on current events, if that's all he discusses.
He gets really heated about certain topics/events & will spend the entire class giving his unnecessary opinion, in a sarcastic manner. His tests are really hard and difficult to study for because you don't really know what he will expect from you. He has lashed out at me a couple of times in front of the whole class, which is unprofessional.
He makes you subscribe to the New York Times because he does pop news quizzes, so keep up with that. His lectures are awesome and he's honestly one of the best professors I've had. His tests are very difficult though, so start studying as soon as you can. He's a tough grader for them too, so watch out for that. But if you study you'll do fine.
He's a great professor who cares what he's talking about. He does his best to make sure no one really gets left behind. Just make sure you keep up with current events, pay attention, and know your vocab and you'll get a good grade.
His tests are hard, they can have around 90 vocab words to study for each tests. His papers are not that difficult do what he wants for it and you will be okay. When not taking class he is interesting in a good way. Not the worst choice just be prepared, he goes off talks about his own politics too. Not bad if you agree or are neutral.
Hinton is great. He is so passionate and caring. I would definitely recommend taking him. WC is a hard class in general so be prepared for work (don't read, just skim).
Great class and professor. He explains things when you have questions and he loves for you to ask them. Very respectful of different political opinions and very informative of the different opinions. Semi-hard grader, but you do actually learn a lot.
He is cool, really smart, and interesting but lectures are super hard to follow/take notes on. Tests are pretty hard and theres an 8 page research paper. Current event quizzes before a lot of classes. Many days he talked about current events the whole class, rather than the content we were tested on.
Awesome awesome professor. By far my favourite. He is full of so much information, very open-minded, and quite frankly, he cracks me up. You'll want to make sure to visit office hours/email if you care. He assigned a lot of reading so my strategy was to skim and take detailed notes whenever he went over the readings in class.
A great professor, very genuine and funny. Doesn't give any easy grades, but if you participate and he knows you're trying, he'll take that into account. For Western Civ: He and Dr. Gigova are definitely tougher graders than the other professors and expect thorough readings of most, if not all, of the readings
Hands down one of the best professors I've ever had. He is very knowledgable, open-minded, and funny! Hinton is definitely a tough professor; you have to work for your grade, but he is always available to help. He makes his lectures very interesting and thought-provoking. Be prepared to read!
Dr. Hinton is a good professor and I would recommend taking his class. He gives quizzes on the New York Times, which can be tricky, but if you read the news then you should be fine. He drops a few of the quizzes anyway. The tests are fair if you read the textbook, come to class, and do the study guides. He makes the class interesting too.
Hinton is super passionate about politics and knows his stuff. He is able to explain concepts really well and tells great stories, really makes you think. Paper heavy class, but if you ask him for help before it's due he'll definitely help you. Tests are writing heavy buy he gives you a study guide with everything you need to know!
This is the second class I have taken with Hinton and I would take another with him. This was his first time teaching American Political Thought, so he was disorganized. Overall, he is not difficult. He loves students that talk a lot in class and that are willing to disagree and debate with him. Would definitely recommend taking his classes.
Hes pretty easy to get along with. He loves you if you go to office hours. He even let me rewrite two papers bc of how much I used our office hours. Its definitely worth it to use them. Hes a good guy and graded fairly. But there is a ton of reading and you cant skip class.
Hinton is my favorite teacher I've ever had. I've taken two of his classes now and I plan on taking a third. His best quality is his openness to being wrong. If he doesn't know the answer to something he won't try to act like he does.
Although he is a nice guy, he is not a fan of students who are not as liberal as he. If people in class point out or make a statement regarding an event of person who is conservative in any way (even moderately) he shuts them down and lists reasons why they aren't correct. Pretty sad considering both sides in political science need to be addressed.
he's an actual genius, hilarious, & incredibly down to earth. you can learn so much from him, particularly from the fact that he will always admit he's wrong & doesn't push his opinions on you EVER!!! he moves fast but speaks & explains things clearly & always welcomes questions & comments. he's one of the best educators I've ever met or will meet
Professor Hinton is the most understanding professor on CofCs campus. I had papers that I would turn in almost a week late and his response would be things come up! I understand! and I would still get an A on the paper. He is so willing to work with his students. I definitely reccommned participating in lectures and making your name/face known!
He is a good guy just makes the class so extra. Its a ridiculous amount of reading, though he does discuss them in class. MAKE SURE TO REMEMBER ALL QUOTES and the philosopher who they belong with because those will make or break your exams. Lets you rewrite papers if you go to office hours. His humor makes the class more tolerable.
He is my favorite professor. The discussions you will have & things you will learn are so valuable & interesting. He's a really great communicator & impressive intellectual. He's very down to earth & not intimidating so its easy to ask questions if you ever get confused as he can tend to unload at lot of interesting info. in a short time period.
Hinton is extremely smart and knows everything he is teaching you but he is extremely opinionated and if you are not as liberal as he is he will talk down to you in a very condescending way and make you feel wrong. He has called me out multiple times in class which is extremely unprofessional. He also talks about current events the entire class.
Dr. Hinton is great. I have taken two of his courses. His lectures are heavy but he is always willing to answer a question or spend time going over material with you during office hours or via email. He seems to really care about both the material and his students. He is not shy about his political views, but never forces his opinions on anyone!
avoid avoid avoid. Weird. Disorganized lectures. Likes to talk about himself. Not sympathetic with the amount of books you have to buy nor some of the things he says. I'm almost convinced he is leaving himself good reviews on here. Wouldn't recommend at all.
very disorganized. don't think that you're going to get clear lectures, he goes off on different tangents and even though I had an A it was just unbearable to sit through because I knew you have to learn everything outside of class. talks for an hour about pretty much nothing.
By far my favorite professor I've had so far. I'm a political sci major, so his class wasn't what I would consider to be difficult, but just be prepared when coming to class. Going to lectures is super important, even if you have a lot of allowed absences. If you're struggling to understand the material, going to class will be the best thing to do.
I really enjoyed my time in POLI102. I thought Professor Hinton made this class understandable and interesting. I liked his lectures and the assignments. I am taking another one of his classes next semester and looking forward to it! I'd highly recommend.
Hinton was great. He is a really funny person and it's clear he is passionate about what he's teaching. In the class I took, I had a few papers but he always gave you a lot of time in advance to work on them, plus he would sometimes extend the deadline. He is somewhat of a tough grader. I would definitely take him again and I recommend him!
Really funny and cool guy. Show up to lectures and read material or will be lost -- assigns lots of paper but is very lenient with the due date and is not too bad of a grader. Really liked his class even though it was so early I tried to go as much as possible
Professor Hinton has many things to say during his lectures- many of which are of his own opinion and not factual at all. He is very intelligent, I'm not saying he isn't. He makes it very clear which political party he identifies with and I think for a class about AMERICAN history and government, this is completely inappropriate and incorrect.
Would not purchase the textbook- you won't use it. Take good notes and you will be okay on tests. Hinton is very opinionated, which can be a good or a bad thing. He is sarcastic & funny, and talks a LOT! He loves to answer questions. 9 page paper required. Sometimes takes attendance for quiz grade. TW: Your opinion may not be valued in his class.
Professor Hinton is a great professor. He has a broad knowledge in his field, and his lectures were interesting and funny. The amount of stuff we needed to do was reasonable; we had 3 Tests (including the final) and two papers. The only tricky thing was his weekly quizzes about the news, but he dropped a lot of them.
This guy will always be the smartest person in the room. If you want to learn something, take him. I look forward to every class I have with him. Super interesting lectures. He is an expert on politics. I leave his classroom more knowledgeable. Love him. For real, itd be a crime not to take at least one of his classes.
Is very thoughtful with his lectures. Very obviously has lots of knowledge on the subject of political science, and is always open to having discussions. Likes for people to talk in his class and provide feedback.
Professor Hinton is the one professor YOU SHOULD TAKE. He's a rare gem who cares about his students and makes learning enjoyable. He is interested in what you have to say, he wants you to achieve your goals and succeed. We need more PROFESSOR HINTONs in this school!
