He was very bold on the first day of class. He took a drink out of a girl's hands and started drinking it and handed it back to her. Honestly, he doesn't beat around the bush. He tells you exactly what he wants and will help you get there. He's a fun professor that is very understanding. Almost like a mentor and really is there to help you learn.
Great teacher, very helpful. Makes class fun and interesting each day. Gives you 6 days to miss class throughout the semester without penalty. Recomend him to anyone looking for a professor that is fun, very helpful, understands you, and grades fairly, but is not a cake walk.
He is the worst teacher i ever had. All he does is criticize you; he'll tell you something's wrong but won't help you with how to fix it. Class is very boring and class discussions are just confusing. Don't take him! Whoever said that you can miss 6 classes was wrong, you can only miss about 3.
your paper will never be good enough for him. for your paper to be portfolio ready you have to write it like 3 times and the 3rd time you have to explain why your paper was horrible and needs to be rewritten. class is always so boring, I can not even keep my eyes open
Not as bad as the comments suggest. I am a terrible writer and I got an A in his class. Tough grader but gives beneficial feedback to all your work. Be friends with the man inside and out of class. talk to him and email him for help and he will surely help you do well. overall not too bad.
Good professor, makes class interesting and will be very helpful if you ask for it. Still a tough grader though, nothing you do to fix your paper will ever be good enough even if you follow his guidelines.
He's very picky yet he's not exactly clear with telling students what he wants. He also picks favorite. he has a specific style of writing and anything other is wrong
If you want to take a journalism class, take him for comp. He'll keep telling you he's not trying to turn you into journalists yet you have to subscribe to the new york times and write articles and interview sources. Not really a hard class though, he's just really annoying.
He loves to give feedback but you have to make sure not to take any of it personally even though it may seem a bit harsh. You do everything on a blog for the entire semester there is no textbook either you just get a subscription to the New York Times.
This professor is the worst professor I have ever taken. I am going to be lucky if i pass. Really hard grader, bashes you in his critique and puts you down as a writer and makes you feel really stupid! if you can then SWITCH PROFESSORS!!! I absolutely hated this course and will be lucky if I can finish with a D!
If you are really looking for a nice, caring teacher that will take time to meet with you, but will also really challenge you and you can take criticism well, then take Professor Hodges' class. If not, you should consider another Comp 1 teacher. His downfalls come in his over-analytical comments to your work and the results in the end of it all
Great professor. Took him for comp 1 and currently for Comp 2. Done expect to BS this class, but if you work it is extremely hard to fail and learn nothing. 100% Recommended. also, he brings coffee and water for his class every so often. Really nice guy.
Super nice guy. He is very critical of your writing though. Don't feel bad he just wants to help you.
Very hard on your writing but it's to help you. Be prepared for more feedback than actual content. Will buy you coffee!
Professor Hodges is willing to help those who are willing to try. He leaves A LOT of feedback on writing, and grades tough. The class is run his way (on a blog) but those who take this professor are bound to learn something and become better writers.
He gives a TON of feedback. However, in the feedback he knit picks practically everything. His assignments are not typical and usually take a lot of time.
The blog can get annoying sometimes
A true college professor. Loves what he does, cares about his students, quirky, sometimes random, funny. He'll go to the ends of the Earth to help you and make you a better writer. He's a hard grader but if you revise your essays (something you can do as many times as you want before the semester ends) you'll do fine. Took him twice for a reason.
Gives a lot ton of work. the most work i've ever got for a writing class. He's nice but sometimes it can be scary because he's blunt when it comes to your writing but says it in a nice voice.
a very unique personality..
Being a freshman and having a Comp 1 class that was entirely essay based and printed papers, it is refreshing to have a professor who does everything online and likes when students get to the point. He was very helpful but also finds flaws in everything I write which sometimes can be annoying.
Teacher is very picky with what he wants. His critiques are very hard and can make you feel pretty down about yourself. His critiques are helpful and he will take the time to make your writing better if you ask. His class is a challenge.
He is the best professor I have ever had. He tells you exactly what is wrong and right in your writing. He doesn't sugarcoat his reviews to make you feel better because he truly wants you to become a better writer. I am not the kind of person who enjoys class but I honestly love waking up and going to his.
Very eccentric, but knows what he's talking about. Yeah, he takes your writing down a peg, but it is never personal. Your writing improves dramatically after taking his course.
Revise, revise, revise. His feedback is hard to understand at times but when you actually understand it, it makes perfect sense. He guides you in the right direction and makes you think about your writing.
Professor Hodges is a great teacher and a great guy. The class is on a blog where he provides detailed feedback on your essays if you ask. My only complaint is that you must write in the way he thinks is correct and he will penalize you if you don't. He will help you "fix" your essay for a good grade, but isn't always flexible with your style.
I have this class at 8AM on Mondays & Wednesdays. My weekends seem to go by too quick and I still somehow seem to make it here. Dave always seems to keep you interested and his class is a good representation of a quintessential college course.
Very nice man, his class isnt hard but it isnt easy either. He makes you work but the great thing is you can always revise your work till the end of the year. TAKE THIS CLASS!
Very helpful with feedback(be prepared to be highly scrutinized). Also, a very hard grader. I am terrible at writing and he definitely wont let me forget it.
The most unique Comp class I have ever taken. With a central theme of newspaper articles this class is all online and every day in class is entertaining. Grade completely unknown which is a little unsettling but if I pass it will be the best English class I have had in my life thus far.
Gives so much helpful feedback. Everything is done through and online blog and the textbook is the new york times. Overall, a great class with a lot of writing
David Hodges is hands down the best writing teacher I have ever had in my entire life. Every critique he writes gives another level of clarity to my writing I didn't think I could do. He is exceptionally talented and anyone would be lucky to have him as a teacher.
He actually wants everyone do well. Every assignment we have to write has a chance to get feedback if the student takes up the opportunity to do so by commenting on his internet blog class page. He has a google doc timesheet to set up meetings for even more help. His assignments are plentiful but more likely then not short and can be fun.
It is clear what is expected of you in this class, clear concise thesis backed up by confident claims to support it. If you achieve this in this class you will get a good grade.
He is a great professor. However, he uses the blog too much for my liking. He is a very good teacher, is VERY helpful and gives awesome feedback. He is a nice guy and it reflects on his teaching ability.I would take his class again! Plus he brings Coffee!!!
Professor Hodges is a very hard grader. He is very confusing sometimes because he'll say one thing and then change his mind and say that is not what he wants. He definitely makes you work for a grade and is by no means easy. If you are a good writer the class shouldn't be too much of a problem for you, if not, get ready to work very hard.
Very helpful and considerate. Does require constant revising.
I ready enjoy his class and Professor David as a person, even though I dread writing articles. He is quick to offer feedback , although it can sometimes confuse you. Over all his class is an 810.
The class is not easy, but Dave helps me through it by explaining everything when assignments seem tough.
Professor Hodges may seem hard to please or very picky about what he wants to read, but I believe that such trends exist simply because he genuinely wants to see all his students improve and be successful. Critique is very thorough and helpful if you don't take it personally.
Davis is the most critical writing teacher I've ever had. It's tough to get used to that level of critique, but in the end it's insanely helpful.
Lots of writing assignments and a very engaging lecture.
Professor Hodges is one of the nicest guys I've ever met. He is always there to help his students as long as you ask for help. We don't have a text book but instead an online blog. At first I hated the online blog, but I realized it saves a lot of time printing papers and it's nice to be able to see his feedback in writing. He knows his stuff
He is very intelligent but is not good at helping students transfer into their freshman year of college. His standards are set to that of a sophomore or junior even. Also his feedback can be kind of harsh. Some times it can be taking to offense.
Professor Hodges is a character. He can be a little strange but he's a really nice guy and a good instructor. His class can be a little difficult, but it just needs get used to. Over-all, good class, slightly annoying with the constant updating of assignments, but he brings us the occasional coffee so it's okay.
He's a pretty good teacher. He gives good feedback and he can be funny at times. His thinking and style of teaching is a bit weird, but it keps it interesting sometimes. All of your assignments will be due online, no handwritten assignments. No textbook is required.
Prof. Hodges is a very nice guy who is always willing to provide help and feedback when asked. He does not give many tests and does not give a final exam, so the only real work is knowing how to write effectively.
Tough grader, but if you need feedback or help on an essay he is there for you to help
A lot of assignments based on news articles. Seems more like a journalism class than a comp 1 class.
The class is kept current, which keeps it interesting. (The New York Times is the textbook). Professor Hodges is always willing to give feedback. Although this is helpful, the grading is very tough.
Always willing to meet with you and help with your essays. The entire class is completed on a blog. The class is difficult as Hodges' requires a lot from your writing, but your writing will definitely improve.
The class is not hard, you just need to be willing to put the time in to revise your writing and make it better using the comments he gives you. Professor Hodges is easy to talk to for any questions you have and is always willing to help.
Okay, so here's the thing. He's a super nice guy, he's just a tad bit strange. He believes that no matter how many drafts you do, no matter how good you think your essay is, you're writing is still crap, according to him. He's critic is a bit harsh at times but it's nothing to take personally because it does help your writing in the long run.
A better-than-average professor. The path he takes to teach this class is also unique; conclusively, I believe my writing has improved the most from this class during my academic career.
I find the class to be pretty boring. However, I see a significant improvement in my writing. There are weekly assignments due, but the course load is never overwhelming. Overall, Professor Hodges is a very nice man and easy to get along with. If you ever need help all you have to do is ask for it.
interesting because we write bout current events. Writing assignments don't have to be extremely long. Tough grader who doesn't give out grades until the end of the semester which I don't really like.
Prof. Hodges was very helpful. He was always available to meet with me whenever I needed his feedback. I liked the feedback he gave because it let me know where I stood in the class. It can be discouraging sometimes, though, because there is always feedback on how your writing can get better, but not on how good it already is.
Professor Hodges is a great guy but can be a bit confusing in the classroom. His feedback on writing is okay. I don't feel like he taught this class as a writing class. I can't say that the skills learned will help me with my writing for future college classes.
Professor Hodges is always willing to help, and clearly spends an excessive amount of time giving his students feedback. You can tell he loves his job and his students. I would definitely take his class again.
Not a boring teacher, he tries to keep everyone interested. I would recommend. No book needed. No really long essays.
Professor Hodges is a great teacher who is always enthusiastic about his work and ready to give thorough critique on your writing. His upbeat personality makes a rather boring comp class, bearable.
Not a bad teacher, can come off as really rude in his critiques, but does give thorough critiques. You mostly just write newspaper articles instead of actual essays. So honestly it feels like a journalism class. Wouldn't recommend as comp 1, would be a good comp 2 professor though
I like how instead of handing in an actual paper everything is written on a blog. It makes handing in work much simpler as well. it also allows for a easer more constant revision process.
Take feedback to heart. Assimilate whatever changes he offers you. He says what you do with his advice is purely up to you, but the whole prospect of feedback is him telling you how to get a better grade.
You can tell he truly cares about what he is teaching, although he is a tough grader! Gives A LOT of feedback , it can be a little bit overwhelming but his intention is to help your writing progress.
Lots to do, so little time
Professor is a tough grader, but allows you to revise your work as much as you want as long as you improve. All the work we do is on the class blog which makes work very convenient, but requires some getting used to. Is a fun professor and work is anonymous. He is a good professor with passion for the work, I recommend him as a Comp 2 Professor.
He's a good professor but using the blog gets confusing.
Prof. Hodges is a pretty cool dude. He's very good in class, makes a not so interesting class interesting, and even bought the class pizza on one occasion. He is a tough grader but will give you feedback and let you re-write essays until they're good. The whole class is run on a blog, which after getting used to it makes things very easy.
Professor Hodges is a pretty good teacher. My only complaint is that he makes assignments more clear. I would say the best part about him is his feedback on papers. He will tear into your paper to the point where it will anger you, but in a good way. It's an interesting way to get you to work harder so he criticizes your papers less. It works.
Very good and teacher and clear in everything he does. Not a boring class it is pretty entertaining its just a huge workload and stresses me out.
Extremely helpful but will make you work for your grade like there is no tomorrow. expect to write a lot and get a lot of feedback to make multiple revisions. You will enjoy the class, many interesting topics. he has a interesting character traits and is extremely nice. If you are not up to the vast amount of work he assigns i would not take him
Harsh when giving feedback but is very helpful
Professor Hodges is a pretty good teacher. My only complaint is that he makes assignments more clear. I would say the best part about him is his feedback on papers. He will tear into your paper to the point where it will anger you, but in a good way. It's an effective strategy to get you to work harder so he criticizes your papers less.
Always an interesting class, never boring. There is a good amount of work which can be difficult to make up if you fall behind.
A lot of easy assimgnment via blog.
Must stay on top of assignments and you will be fine. A hard grader, so ask for much feedback on your assignments because his grading is very unclear so it is essential to do good on each individual assignment
He is very generous.
Professor Hodges cares a lot about his students and loves his job. He is always willing to help you and gives you an enormous amount of feedback on your papers. He can be very harsh with his feedback, so you can't be sensitive about your writing. You need to work HARD for an A. I enjoyed his class but got sick of his very liberal views on topics...
Lots of work, if you do all of it you will be fine. Just show up to class everyday prepared to do work.
This class is terrible ! Do not take this professor, he doesn't explain the assignment to well and gives a lot of work!!! He just different then any other professor at Rowan university , his grading system needs improvement !
Thorough in his explanation of what he expects out of you on various assignments. Good sense of humor. Lots of small papers and assignments but no textbook and no tests or quizzes.
David Hodges makes students work, but it pays off. I feel like a better writer. He's a little out there, but aren't all the best professors? He will drive you crazy sometimes, giving you feedback for every little thing you did wrong, but that's better than no feedback at all. Cherish this whirlwind of writing experience, and let it make you better.
Good professor, he's different with his approach to teaching and he makes you think about your work but its not hard work its more like a challenge
Kind of weird but can be a likable person. When it comes to explaining it takes awhile to understand what exactly he wants from you.
Great Professor, funny, engaging, a little corky but knows what he is talking about.
Nice guy, but he does make you work a lot. He also gives you harsh critical feedback. But once you near the end, you feel like you improved. Plus it's entirely on the computer, with usernames to hide your identity.
Mr Hodges class can become very difficult.
Great professor. Funny, charming, and very informative. You really have to work to get a good grade, but he will get you to where you need to be through his feedback, lectures, and exercises. If you're a republican you may not like him, but those who are heavily liberal will love him.
Fun and engaging conversations in class. That being said, the work builds upon previous assignments so you want to make sure you do everything assigned, even if it seems insignificant. Grading is a little confusing. However, good (at times harsh) feedback is given. Not a hard class in general, just expect to write.
Likable teacher. Has fun and makes jokes in class. Has a well teaching strategy and is very smart. Lots of work in the class with seems to be not enough time for it all.
He's a great professor. Provides good feedback. But the truth is, he does give a lot of work. You need to stay on top of your work to pass. Do not be afraid to ask for help, he gives great advice.
I'm sure he means well, but his kind of teaching is not for me. He does give a lot of feedback, but it is unclear at times. His directions are unclear as well about half of the time. The exercises are meaningful, and the assignments aren't too difficult. They are time consuming and take research. Grading is reasonable, but you have to work for it.
This class is a challenge but if you take it serious you will have no problems.
David is a wonderful professor and any rating under 4 would be inaccurate. Most people who can't handle this class are the lazy ones. The assignments are plentiful, but the prompts are good and interesting. An assignment will never take more than an hour or so. Overall it is a great class to enhance your writing.
He's a good professor, but rips your papers apart. If you can't take the criticism he provides or just don't like to write, don't take this course.
He's very positive and passionate. He comes to class full of energy everyday. I don't know he does it. He lets it be known that he will be very critical and it is because he wants you to have the best paper possible. Don't get insulted or discouraged. I can see why other reviews call him quirky but I enjoy his humor and pov. Very good class.
How you view this class depends on how you view school. I love to learn and do not mind putting in the work so I loved it. This class takes a lot of time and effort but I guarantee that you will come out a better writer. Expect an assignment almost every week while allowing for time to revise all of your work. If you put in the time, you're golden.
A wonderful person all around both inside and outside of the classroom
Professor Hodges is a great professor who really cares about his students. He is available pretty much 24/7 for any questions or if you want feedback on your writing. The best thing about this class is that Professor Hodges gives you unlimited attempts at revising your work for a new grade, so there's really no way you can fail.
Lots of assignments. What he lacks in tact he makes up for meaningful and sometimes funny lectures.
The professor was amazing. Although the work is hard especially for those who are not the average writer. The whole class is based on the expectancy that students provide a 3000-word essay on a topic that has never been written before. Yikes.
Not difficult, but it is a labor intensive class. Professor Hodges always responds to feedback if you ask for it and respond to it. His lectures are usually interesting and thought provoking. The more you communicate the problems you run into with your papers, the better he will be able to help you solve them. If you work hard, you will improve.
He is awful, he does not explain ANYTHING and just talks in class but half of the time the class does not know what he is talking about. I can not stand being in the class and when you want extra help it is not there for you. My Comp 1 professor was amazing and helped me become a better writer and I feel like everything I learned is useless here.
Professor Hodge was very kind and it was enjoyable to be in his class. The class is based on a blogpost, where all lecture plans, assignments, and submission pages are found on it. There is a lot of writing assignments; around 1 paper and a smaller assignment due each week. Grading was critical but fair. If on top of work, it's a very fun class.
He's always available, he gave all of us his emails, he address (don't go to his house), and cell. He made it clear that we can always ask him about our work. He spends most of class just talking and asking engaging questions that seem to be irrelevant, but isn't. He is constantly giving feedback about our writing. A lot of writing so keep up.
As a math major I felt wary going into this class. But his humor, charm, and charisma really stood out from the rest of the professors I've had in the past. He made writing a little more enjoyable for me. A few downsides were the blog was a little odd to get used to at first but after a month it's like using blackboard or canvas.
A very good professor and accessible at any time of the day. Always giving very good and very clear feedback.
he is a great professor. he helps you every time with all your work. he is a very chill professor. you would enjoy studying with him. and also it will enhance your writing very much.
Professor Hodges is a fantastic teacher! His lectures were accessible and very entertaining. He gives excellent feedback throughout the semester regarding work. He is very nice, and I would retake another course with him.
You will enjoy this class. Make sure you write clear notes during the lecture because you will be graded.
Professor Hodge is a great professor who is willing to compromise unlike most professors and he makes going to class worth your time with interesting lecture time. Hodge's comp class is more of a conversation rather than a lecture making class very comfortable for every student. Although the only thing I can say the workload for his class is heavy
He's a great guy and he has no problem giving feedback so ask away. There is usually 1 main assignment and 1 secondary assignment due every week so stay on top of your work and his class will be easy. His lectures are wholesome and he makes great connections to help get his point across.
You can attend class online if you can't make it, the essay is a little hard to do but honestly, your rewrites will be better than expected and when you thought you did bad you usually did perfectly fine. He is a great professor
Mister David is a dope guy. Would 10/10 take his class again. Man really cares about his students. Lectures are always interesting and there is minimal work. Take this course, my guy is a G and a beast. Sometimes he doesn't even care if I'm bumping in class headphones strapped
Mr. David is a great prof. He is ready to give his time to anyone who needs it and wants to help you if you ask for it. He is a kind man who tries his best to engage the class and keep things interesting. Feedback is something he takes seriously so make sure you keep the cycle going. Great class if you want to learn things differently.
I took Professor Hodges' 8AM comp 1 and it was honestly a breeze. Theres writing assignments once in a while, but they're never super hard and he gives very nice feedback on all work. He even encourages us to ask for feedback! The only reason I wouldn't take again is because it was an 8am and I am not a morning person.
A great professor. Gives great feedback on your writing. Lectures are always interesting, they are more like a conversation with students. The more you communicate the problems you crash into with your writing, the more he will be able to help you solve them. If you work hard, you will improve overall.
Gives good feed back. The lectures can drag a little bit but professor Hodges is a super nice guy. Only thing that I don't really like is not knowing what your grade is until the end of the semester.
Don't take this class. It is taught like a journalism class even though he says it is not. You only ever write newspaper articles.
The professor is a very intelligent man who is always willing to help a student. You have to care about your work and in return he will provide good feedback. The lectures are always engaging and he definitely knows a lot about writing.
He's a great professor and I highly suggest him. Gives fast and amazing feedback. One down side is that when he sometimes gives feedback you feel as if you need to rewrite your whole piece because he says the argument is wong and its not very easy to fix an argument without a rewrite.
Prof. Hodges is a great professor. He is very passionate about what he does and it truly shows in the way he talks to his students. He does make you write a lot, but he gives you many chances to fix your writing and offers great feedback. However, this course runs more like a journalism class. If you're looking for an English class, don't take him.
Mister David is a fantastic professor. Good sense of humor & very nice. He gives great, detailed feedback and is super easy to talk to. Lectures are usually easy to sit through. You hand in all HW on an his site, which is well-organized. No matter how good at writing you think you are, Hodges will make you even better. You just have to work for it.
Great professor, but gets boring here and there and tends to be lots of works after every class.
Professor Hodges really gets in to his work. He is always looking out for the better of you and the class. His assignments are really straight forward and he really loves what he teaches. I didnt think I would like the class to begin with but it really grew on me and I loved it.
Professor Hodges was a great Comp teacher. I don't particularly like composition but he made it enjoyable. There was only 4 papers to which we pick the topics and other than that little tasks. If you don't want to do a lot of work, and not be stressed I would take this class.
Cares about the student's success, is very clear with what he wants in your writing. Discusses current events and writing assignments were relatively easy, but I still learned something.
Def the best professor i have, very accommodating.
Professor Hodges was outstanding
If you wanna be a better writer I would 100 percent take this class. He helped me write my best papers and actually help me think about how I was writing them.
Professor Hodges is a great professor. He provides thorough feedback and cares about your success. It is a writing course so the workload can be heavy, but as long as you stay on top of it you will be okay. He always offers chances to improve your work. You will succeed as much as you try to.
I enjoyed this class! No two classes were ever alike, and I loved the use of real world examples to understand writing. Really awesome professor, but you will have to attend class and work hard!
Professor Hodges is a very good teacher. He really tries to make you a better writer and really understand the topics in class. The homework load is not bad, just make sure you stay on top of it and show up to class. If you do what he asks he will have no problem helping you get through the class.
A great professor. He wants to make sure class is interesting and that you understand what is going on. A lot of mini assignments, but they help you grasp the information that was taught in class. Mr. Hodges is a teacher who encourages students to ask for feedback. He is a respectful guy and wants the best for everyone.
Professor Hodges is a very compassionate professor and you can tell that he loves writing with his whole heart. However, this class is not easy at all. Be prepared for a ton of writing every week. One thing I did not like was that he was not consistent with grading assignments. I never knew where I stood but he gave great feedback.
Professor Hodges is caring person and wants the best out you and your writing. Also, hes compassionate and makes sure that you are on top of your work. Even hes a professor that is a fair grader and I recommend you take his class.
Hodges gives so much homework everynight, doesn't grade any work until the end of the semester so you don't really know how you are doing in the class. Makes you do this really long research project throughout the semester. It is very time consuming. SAVE YOURSELF
He's a good teacher, for some the writing style he asks for may be difficult. Talk to him, he is very understanding and wants to help you pass. I did not communicate as much as I should have, I will most likely have a grade that will reflect that. He knows all I want to do is pass and that composition is my weakest subject and he still supports me
Id recommend this class to anyone who likes to write and wants to improve their skills. Professor Hodges is a teacher that cares about your improvement. He gives detailed feedback when asked for to meet your needs. The workload is not crazy he spaces out the assignments generously. Only "bad" to his class is you never know your grade.
This is a difficult course, there is no question about that. It is not an unpleasant course, though, in fact, it is very enjoyable. Every class consists of a lecture and then there is usually homework for the 3000-word essay. Be prepared to do a lot of research and write a lot!
Very passionate, very intelligent. It is a lot of work however, if you can keep up it's a good class to take, a teacher who actually tries to teach.
Professor Hodges cares about his students a lot. The class is very intensive and stressful at times, but you will learn A LOT. Be sure to keep up with due dates, respond to feedback, and always revise or you will be completely overwhelmed by the end of the semester. The only downside is not knowing your grade, but he is a great professor.
You need to stay on top of everything if you take this class.
Great teacher. Very helpful and cares about his students. Forgiving with grading. Highly recommended. I would take his classes again.
I think that professor Hodges is a nice person. This class has a lot of writing and revision included which can be much especially at the end of the semester so keep up and ask for lots of feedback. If you like writing a lot and improving your work at least 3 times this is the class for you. Overall gives a lot of feedback.
If you are genuinely considering a career in writing, then his class is perfect. But if you are just taking him for the college comp 2 requirements then save yourself. There are so many assignments and he gives you an ok grade unless you rewrite them all, which is super inconvenient because I had other classes to worry about.
Too much work for one class, barely gives time for anything else and he is a extremely tough criticizer do not take this course unless it's your last option.
I agree with other reviews that the course load provides some daunting challenges. It can seem overwhelming if you have a full course load. Professor Hodges' gives obvious feedback on your papers, and if you engage with his input and create a conversation with him, it will improve the class and make writing papers much more manageable.
Professor Hodges was one of the most caring professors I have had since coming to Rowan University. The first day we met, I thought he was a little crazy and debated dropping his class for another english course but I am glad I didn't. You must stay up to date with assignments and ASK FOR FEEDBACK. IT WILL HELP SO MUCH.
Great professor, just make sure you stay on top of your work because it can get overwhelming sometimes.
Great teacher. Whatever effort you put in he gives back to you. There are a lot of essays that had to be done. I wouldn't recommend taking class if you have loads of work and other class because you need full attention in this class.
The professor isn't all that bad once you get used to his way of teaching. You can tell that he cares about students doing well. I didn't like that he grades hard, but he does let you do a rewrite and he does let you do a rewrite. Overall, great teacher, just be aware of the work that you have to put in.
Professor Hodges takes the time to form personal, yet professional, relationships with his students. While he is tougher when it comes to the first few drafts, it is due to the fact that he knows each of his students can produce more powerful arguments.
This is the perfect class if you're into writing and editing papers. Each paper written in this class requires constant revising to accommodate his feedback. He is a very nice guy who wants to help you improve your writing, just be prepared to dedicate most of your time to his assignments. You can however revise the papers all semester long.
Professor Hodges is class was not difficult it was just a lot of work. The work made me think critically, as well as helped me become a better writer. Although the homework can be hard when you use his conferences and feedback things feel way easier. If I took this Professor again I would not mind.
Professor Hodges was the best teacher I ever had. His lessons include things like riddles, videos, current events, and more that end up teaching us something about writing. If you take his class, your writing will be one million times better. He puts in the effort each of his students do combined and really cares about everybody's progress.
Hodges provides is a sweet guy and provides great feedback. However, he is a tough grader. You really have to work to get an A/B in his course. His lectures are also a little redundant at times for a Comp II class. Also be prepared to use his blog instead of Canvas. Otherwise, his course is perfect for anyone who wants to write professionally.
It's so much busy work. On top of the busy work are 8 assignments that can all individually ruin your grade. The only way to be successful in this class is to do everything more than once. We don't use Canvas, unless you take the time to learn to navigate his website you'll stay confused. You won't you're grade until you're done.
If you're willing to actually put effort into his course, David Hodges will simply be one of the best instructors you'll have. His Comp 2 course isn't easy, but David's way of teaching is noticeably effective and will improve your overall critical thinking skills, regardless of major. David's care and respect for his students is immense.
This is not the class to take if you are fulfilling comp requirements. The work load from this course, utilizing the blog for paper submission and assignments/exercises, and the redundant lectures are overwhelming. Although he provides great feedback on papers, you'll have to rewrite them for a better grade.
a breakdown: - everything in his lectures is an opinion or metaphor, no straightforwardness at all - expects you to work like this class alone is the only responsibility in your life - no canvas, uses an overly difficult to navigate blog - GRADES and picks apart YOUR class NOTES :) summary: save yourself the agony :)
Professor Hodges is a very good professor and he cares a lot about his students. He may give some harsh feedback at times but he is always just trying to help his students. The only downfall to his class is that you don't use canvas instead, he uses a blog which is slightly confusing at times.
Professor Hodges cares a lot about his students. He may give some harsh feedback but gives thought out revisions.
Definitely a hard course but very good teacher who is there to help and get your writing skills way better, offers constant feedback and meetings for those who are struggling.
Professor Hodges is one of the easiest classes to take as he helps you with your assignments and gives you wonderful feedback. He tells you ahead of time what to expect in his class and how he may help you. There is a lot of writing, researching, and thinking that you have to do but he helps with finding the information.
great professeur
Offers very good writing advice and is stern with grading but overall the class was enjoyable and you can tell the professor cares and how much work he put in to help you inmprove.
In all honesty, Prof. Hodges is a great dude. He really does care for his students and wants the best for us. But I would never take his class again simply because there is so much writing and he does not use Canvas. I feel like every week I have to write another 1000 words for him and it is just overwhelming.
Professor is very good and very helpful. Professor does a good job explaining assignments well and feedback is very helpful. His feedback can be a bit much at times but overall it is helpful and is much needed.
Overall, Professor Hodges is probably one of the best teachers I have had. He is also really understanding as long as you aren't making up some crazy excuses. Professor Hodges also communicates really heavily with the work that we do for the class and that is really helpful. It might be a lot of work, but he is there to help every step of the way.
I would not take this class again. The professor was all over the place every day. The topics are not something I am ever going to use again in my life. The topics were the most mind-boggling awful topics that made me not want to be in the class. He holds you after the class time is over even if you have a class across campus. Dont take him.
Great Prof! Tough grader. He really cares about what you have to say but if you want to take the class just to pass he will not be interested in your work. Show that you care and he will work with you to get a good grade.
Professor Hodges was extremely helpful outside of class. There are multiple ways that you can contact him and he is always there to help you. He is a tough grader but you can rewrite your assignments to improve your grade. He gives lengthy feedback which is helpful with the rewrites. The riddles are a waste of time more often than not.
This class is kind of fun. The agenda notes that are fun to write as he gives hypotheticals that match what he teaches that day. He likes participation. The portfolio assignments are a bit tougher but if you tell him your a bit stuck, he'll help you out. His goal is to get you to improve your writing, not your grade.
His 'counterintuitive' themed lectures provide interesting classes. Pay attention and attend class because he grades your class notes. Professor Hodges is extremely accessible outside of class and loves conversation. The only drawback is that he's a tough grader, but will work with you as long as you're willing to put the work in.
Prof Hodges is a good teacher, he does give really good feedback, even if it is tough. Canvas isn't used during the semester, we do use a blog-style website. One thing I will say is that we write a lot, it seems that every week we were expected to do 1000-word arguments. Which can be a lot when you have 6 other classes that have homework as well.
Professor Hodges' classes are thought-provoking, but his grading can be tough. Stay engaged, attend every session, and utilize resources like unstuckstudy for study prep. It's a challenging course, but the effort pays off.
An exceptional lecturer only if you pay attention in class and attempt to read between the meaning of the lecture. Though a very difficult class to get a good grade, and you NEED to ask for feedback on work. Overall, a tough class, but extremely useful in getting valid writing advice that will provide useful in future work.
My Favorite Professor is David Hodges. He is a tough grader that is true but he gives so much feedback and you are able to revise your work for a better grade. Classes can be a bit confusing when you don't understand his metaphors but he is fun. Be prepared to write and re-write your work!
If your used to canvas, you have to get comfortable with using his website and make sure to keep an eye on the instructions.
Incredible professor!
Professor hodge is unlike any professor i've had before ! The class was confusing sometimes but the lessons would eventually make sense! I appreciate this class because all the feedback i got was very personalized and made me a better writer.
He's a Laidback professor but the amount of coursework is pretty sizable. If you're at the part of college when you're taking Comp2 and other gen eds, this is gonna be your top priority, otherwise it'll be tough. The guy really does care about what you write and will give you insightful feedback, with instructions on how to fix it lol, great course
Very energic professor when it comes to attending class early in the morning. He'll go lengths to guide, and help you with your project. If you go all in, put in the effort, and reached out to him then he'll also go out, and put the same effort as you do to get yourself a better grade. Best of all, you can get free coffee every morning from him:)
One of my favorite professors, lent me a book and showed genuine interest in my paper topic, motivating me to complete it to the best of my ability.
Professor Hodges is an amazing professor, and truly cares for his students. His lectures are interesting and I learned something new everytime. He gives great feedback on assignments and will really want you to improve and do your best. - Naomi :)
