Uses very technical philosophy language, sometimes a bit over head but friendly
Might be hard to follow if you aren't into Phil., but He is fun! music & videos!
I like him.
Great guy, hes very funny, incredibly knowledgeable, and if you actually use your mind during his class, you will have no trouble understanding and LEARNING!
This guy is brilliant! Did his Ph.D. at Oxford, and specializes in Aristotle and Aquinas. He is very friendly and organized.
Good class and a genuine hard working and caring prof
Great Teacher
Quizzes asked ridiculous questions and class interaction was very unhelpful.
class could be very dry at times, but Horner has a wealth of knowledge, you sing lots of hymns, write a cool paper. not alot of work either
Great content....totally arrogant
Grat techer, very enthusiastic and passionate. A very smart guy but doesn't make you feel stupid.
his teaching varied from class to class. Sometimes I loved the class, sometimes not. I did love singing in class, though.
Awesome class. Awesome prof. A++++++++++++++++++
Obvious, deep personal faith that positively affects his teaching. Deep thinker. Teaches how to put theology into action in our lives. One of my favorite theology profs. I definitely recommend him.
I enjoyed him. Alot of reading but it was good reading. He's a good teacher; one of the best

Very fun, down-to-earth, and helpful in so many ways! He truly cares for his students!

I'm excited about this class. Its going to be hard, but i think it will definately be worth it...
He was an amazing teacher...I absolutely loved his class. Material can be difficult if it's your first exposure to it, but it's worth learning.

Horner makes class fun, interesting, and meaningful. He knows the subjects he teaches quite well and covers important topics that will help shape your worldview.
funny man.
Dr. Horner is awesome! He is easily understood and makes the class always interesting. You never know what's going to happen next in the class.
Any professor who plays monty python clips in class to illustrate how we often argue incorrectly these days is brilliant. Without a doubt, Horner is tied for my favorite teacher. He makes the subject so fascinating and he is so into it. Very clear teaching style. Approachable in and after class.
Take this class from Horner! He is great. His assigned reading are awesome as well.
Amazig Prof! One of my favorites!
Horner is, without doubt, the best Bible teacher I've had so far. And I came from a private high school.
most boring teacher ever. I almost always fell asleep in his class. he pretty much just gives you the notes and you just have to fill in the blanks. and he purposely tries to trick you on tests, which pretty much sucks. he thinks hes funny, too. hes not.
Horner is incredible! I have learned so much from him...and he always keeps class interesting. :)
Dr Horner is a professor where you either love him or hate him. I personally didnt like his class because hes not as funny as he things he is and all of the questions look the same on his tests and he purposely tries to trick you. His papers are easy so if you dont do well on the tests then you still have hope. Dont take it at 8 Am.
Definatly the greatest teacher I have had so far. Extremely knowledgeable in Philosophy and has sound beliefs. Class was life-changing for me. Tests need studying for, the reading is manageable (and very good!), papers are somewhat difficult (but short). Its definatly possible to get a solid A if you apply yourself and enjoy the class!
my favorite class this semester. very unique-you sing a hymn at the start of each class. he's very intelligent and keeps the attention of the class well. his tests are difficult because he tries to trick you, so study a lot and do well on the essays and do the extra credit. read the reading, it's great, especially mere christianity by cs lewis.
This class has changed my life. If you don't want to think, get another foundations teacher, if you want to be challenged take Horner. If you get stuck with him, participate and listen, no matter how tired you are. This guy has some great things to say. As a general rule, you should always take classes with Oxford graduates.
Dr. Horner was a very exciting professor. He breaks the class up into what he calls cohort groups,(4-5 students) where we meet about 5x's in the semester. I had the best group and God couldn't have blessed me more!! I loved this class even at 8 AM! Be careful on his tests, and make sure you study. Hint: Think like Horner and you'll do fine. Enjoy t
He is a Great teacher even early in the morning. The ONLY thing that makes me want to ditch this class is the singing at 8:00am!Im just no in a SINGY mood that early If you are awake enough to sing songs then go for it...if not try to take him later in the day.
IF YOU WANT TO LEARN TAKE HORNER! This is my second semester at Biola, and he is the best professor so far without a doubt. The work load is a good amount so that your not over-burdened, but enough for a healthy work load for your mind.
Best teacher at Biola that I have taken so far, he is fantastic! Workload is manageable, though the papers are a little hard. I'm just so glad that I requested to be able to take him when I entered, because it's almost imposible to get into his class later on because he is so popular. Take his class if you can - it's fabulous.
as far as the work, its do-able. take good notes even the stuff he says. you learn sooo much in his class and hes an awesome professor. the standing up frequently could get a little annoying but he is definitely worth taking! you wont regret it !
INCREDIBLE prof...this class changed my life. The course work is challenging but totally manageable. Foundations is a required course, so TAKE IT WITH HORNER. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll never be the same.
Im gonna miss this class! Dr. Horner is so interesting and passionate bout the subjet. He often leads worship @ the beginning of class. Take good notes in coursepack and tests r easy. And the assignments are really insightful, like the reading. I highly recommend taking this class-it changed the way I think. "Ideas have consequences!" :)
Do not see why everyone loves him. My least favorite class at Biola so far. He comes across as very arrogant...a know it all. All the tests and projects ask "What does Horner think about..." or "What does the professor say..." The only reason I go is because of attendance. Very smart guy, but knows that he is. Did not enjoy the class at all.
I was told he is the best teacher and that his class was so great but honestly, I don't see what is so great about him or the class. His tests are tricky and its always "What does Horner say or think.." His book Universanity..its exactly almost word for word his lectures he gives, so you not only hear them you have to read them as well.Boring class
Alright folks. Horner isn't for everyone, but if you like a more contemplative style, and you actually don't mind studying every once in a while, he is great. Test questions come straight from his lectures. So... if people don't like him it's cause they don't pay attention in class. He's an incredibly insightful person. Bask in his wisdom :)
Great professor for a beginner's look at philosophy. He does give more reading than other professors but it's applicable.
great professor! very knowledgeable. he does give a lot of hw (papers) but you will learn a lot in his class and he's very approachable if you have any questions. everything you learn in his class is applicable and so helpful for the real world.
This class was really boring he lectures and it sounds just like his book. Some things are very interesting, but although I'm doing good in the class I do not like this class. There is a lot of reading, and studying for this class is hard because you need to know everything he said.
One of my favorite profs at Biola. I read some comments here that said he came off as arrogant, I think they mistook confidence for pride. He knows a lot and if you're open to learning, you will learn a lot. If you aren't, this class will be boring just like any other class. I believe this is a class every Christian should take.
This class is not for the weak, I'll admit. GO TO CLASS! I promise you won't regret it. Dr. Horner is kind and intelligent, take advantage. Foundations of christian thought changed my life.
Horner is very boring teacher. He's very intelligent, but the lectures are ridiculously boring and tough to sit through. He does not integrate anything fun at all. There is tons of reading as well and it's just as dry. There are a few papers, but they're not challenging and the quizzes are pretty easy. Attendance is mandatory. Boring teacher.
He is a great professor that has a passion for the class, but he can be very dull at times. Some days he plays his guitar for worship at the beginning of class which is enjoyable!
Hands down one of the best teachers at Biola. He knows the information inside and out, keeps it interesting, and gives barely any homework. Plus, he's brilliant and funny. Take his class!
Horner was a good teacher and a easy class, but honestly not very engaging and boring. I continually tried to engage myself and pay close attention but it was simply uninteresting and hard to stay focused. The biggest recommendation is do ALL OF THE EXTRA CREDIT! It is easy and helps your grade a lot!
He is very knowledgable and not a bad teacher. However, he can be very ignorant to viewpoints different from his own. He is very, very opinionated.
Dr. Horner is one of the greatest professors at Biola. He's passionate about what he teaches and so down to earth. If you try, he's easy to get to know and truly shows love to his students! Advice: go to his Commons office hours and TAKE HIS CLASS!
Boring class that requires attendance. Reading is "required" but no tests or quizzes ever ask anything about the books. Teacher is intelligent but class is big so questions aren't easy to ask. If you study for the exams and do the assignments, the class is an easy A.
Dr. horner has a bad rap on this site. I think he is a very knowledgeable teacher that cares about students. He does rely a lot on the TA, and He is pretty serious with grading. I attended every class session, did all required reading and assignments, went to every study session for tests and ended up with a C plus.
LOVE Horner! he is great and very wise if you actually want to listen. if you don't want to listen, it is still a fairly easy A. its funny how he quotes himself sometimes
Horner is awesome. He is wise, and is funny during class. Stay up on the reading and take notes cause there are reading quizzes (8). Overall great teaching, but he is sometimes one sided when talking about worldviews. attendance is mandatory, 2 midterms and one final. go to the study sessions! Great class, I don't regret it!
Awesome prof. The homework load is bearable and pretty easy, and he makes the classes interesting (sometimes plays guitar). Read the books!! it will help you on the reading quizzes. two mid terms and one final, go to the study session. Often subjective in his approach to worldviews, but a good teacher. Take the class!
Dr. Horner is an awesome Prof. His lectures are so interesting, engaging, practical and full of wisdom. If you are serious about engaging unbelievers in the real world and want to see people come to faith in Christ for the glory of God the Father, take his class because he will definitely equip you to answer the tough questions people ask.
Dr. Horner is an amazing prof; he should have a mic so he can drop it after his lectures. The class is not an easy A but it's not difficult either. Very interesting and well presented subject matter. 2 tests, memory quizzes and 3 papers. I would suggest him for sure! He plays the guitar in class and sometimes breaks into a British accent.
Horner is a great guy and is wicked smart. However, he has a degree in philosophy, and he makes sure you know that. He is VERY theological and it can get a tad bit confusing. However, his notes help ALOT so make sure you have them for class. The quizzes are not too hard if you keep up with your reading. I am glad I took him, but you work hard.
He is a nice prof, but can be boring at times. His lectures are so simple just use the printed notes, however the tests will be on the notes and readings. Expect to read weekly PS Buy online books for the open book quizzes. Computers and phones are not allowed, he will call you out on it. Overall would actually take him again as it was interesting.
Dr. Horner's class was my favorite of the semester. His discussion on worldviews is incredibly enlightening. He is extremely intelligent, so if you try to argue with him, he'll most likely prove you wrong. Because of his intelligence he tends to come off as slightly arrogant, but he really does have a heart for the Lord. Loved this class.
Lots of reading and long lectures but definitely worth it. Dr. Horner was BROUGHT to Biola for a reason. He knows what he is talking about and is passionate about what he teaches. He is a philosopher so some of the things he says go way over my head, but I have definitely learned a lot from him. There will be papers, quizzes, and projects.
Dr. Horner teaches foundations well and is very knowledgeable. However, his class is very long and drags it out, there are 3 big papers and absolutely no technology use in class. He doesn't check for attendance unless there is a guest speaker, nonetheless you need to go to class to fill out the booklet to do well on the quizzes and final.
Absolutely no laptops in class, final/ midterm is 100 questions and requires you to memorize 18 different people, what they did, what their status was, and the timer period from a 60 page article. Ridiculous professor, do NOT take him
quizzes are open notes, but he puts irrelevant questions on there that you wouldn't write down in your notes (ex: what percentage of texans don't know what country lies beneath them?")
He is a good teacher and is passionate about what he teaches. There is alot of reading but it is not hard to keep up with. He is clear about what he expects and if you follow those guide lines you'll pass no problem
Dr. Horner is super intimidating at first because he's so smart, but he's incredibly funny and loves the stuff he teaches. Want an easy A? Look elsewhere. But if you're willing to do the work and you're okay with being seriously challenged, take Dr. Horner's class. Make sure to attend every class, or you'll miss a lot of material.
Professor Horner is very smart and knows what he is talking about. He loves what he teaches and will answer any questions you have and is very accessible outside of class. There is a lot of reading, but if you do it all, you will be okay. A lot of work needs to be put into this class but it is so worth it! I recommend Professor Horner!
He's an awesome prof who genuines cares for his students and has a passion for the subject he teaches! There is a lot of reading but his quizzes are easy (open notes). If you used the note template he gives and listen in class you'all pass easily
I love Dr. Horner, a real Christian Intellect, and he genuinely cares for the students. He makes himself available outside of class and regular office hours in a group setting. Totally worth having, even if as a mentor only.
The reading assignments were do-able and the best part about class. Lecture doesn't feel like college with songs on his guitar, singing, or dragging out basic points. I was never academically challenged. So easy A, but I was often offended, feeling like he was talking down to us and treating us like grade-school students. :(
Dr. Horner is an excellent professor, he's a big goof ball. One of the things I loved about his class was that he began class with worship (sometimes) . Overall, Dr. Horner truly cares about his students' well being and makes an effort for everyone to understand the material.
Good class, wasn't too challenging and grading wasn't too harsh. You have a few papers to write and reading quizzes every week. Take notes and skim the readings. The teacher was not my favorite as he would often talk down to us and constantly bragged about attending Oxford, but you learn to ignore it and focus on the material in the lecture.
Professor Horner has changed my life. His class was absolutely incredible and I have learned so much through him. He has helped my walk with Christ, by giving me the tools to back up my faith and understand what I believe in and why. Couldn't recommend this man enough!!
Horner is the best! I learned so much from this class and my faith was challenged. Horner is caring, funny, respected, and a real hoot. To those complaining about no electronics- suck it up! You are in class to learn, which is what Horner is evidently passionate and concerned about.
Horner is one of the most self-absorbed professors. He thinks our generation is absolutely uninteresting and unintelligent. He constantly makes you feel like the common sense he is teaching you is the most important thing in the world. He goes out of his way to give you trick questions on all of his assignments and you read the most boring books!
Just don't. He requires a very specific type of student and I have yet to meet one. He has strange mannerisms and makes you buy his book and then covers everything in it in class. His lecture and reading quizzes are horribly scheduled and insanely unnecessarily difficult. Also this class was somehow about nothing and everything at the same time.
This guy is a joke. Threatens to fail you if he sees any electronics. Be ready to stand up at least 4 different times every class to sing or read a random song or prayer. Even his syllabus quiz takes studying for and even then it could take you 8-10 times before you pass. Tends to get off track when lecturing as well. Definitely do not take.
Horner cares about his students. He is a really tough prof though. There is so much reading and a few papers. His lectures are on the reading, so they are repetitive. He takes points off your grade for not emailing him in the correct format. However, he did show grace to me as I struggled with some heavy stuff this semester. Tough, but caring.
I had to take his class twice. The 1st failed because I couldnt study because of my personal life and you do need to do the work for his class. The 2nd I begged him to be in his class that was already full. He was so gracious, kind, and understanding. I cried. I am an alumni and this happened in 2010. Ive never forgotten his mercy. Thank you DH
David Horner has been my favorite proffesor so far. His class requires a ton of reading, and lectures, but they are extremely interesting topics. His quizes are pretty hard, just for the fact you read many different chapters, and it's hard to know what exactly what his ten questions will obtain too. But overall, he's an excellent, Lots of wisdod
David Horner has been my favorite profesor so far. His class requires a ton of reading, and lectures, but they are extremely interesting topics. Professor Horner is extremely knowledgeable and his lectures are very interesting. I had a lot of fun with this class and personally loved singing before lecture. He is strict though, especially with informal emails or using phones during the class (but I loved that). You do need to work for your grade but it's not impossible.
Dr. Horner is the most knowledgable professor I have ever had. If you show up, participate, and do your work, you will do great in his class. He has such an amazing story and you really can learn so much from him. You can tell that he cares so much about his students and he is so passionate about teaching. I highly recommend taking his class.
Insanely boring lectures, and because his lectures are based on his book (that we have to read), it's pretty redundant. Always passes around books each class that you have to pretend to look at. Quizzes are really tough, but overall its an easy A w/ only a few short papers and not much homework. I respect the guy, but not good for 9 am
Dr. Horner is able to explain what's on his slides, but that's the extent of it. If you ask him how to improve your scores or studying, he isn't helpful. When I've gone for help he's been slow and easily moves off topic, which is frustrating.
He is very knowledgeable and smart. He is approachable. The lecture can be boring, but the content is good and interesting. If you are a thinker, you would love this class. Open note lecture and reading quizzes (online). Make sure you write good notes on the manual. A lot of reading. Extra credit opportunity for bible verse memory quizzes.
Great professor for Foundations. Quizzes are open book, hardest thing are three papers throughout the entirety of the course. If you start them early they are easy enough. This man has thought long and hard about his worldview. If you take his class, not only will you get a good grade, but you will get a good education.
Professor David Horner is really tough, honestly!!! But!! He is really really really wise and kind! I didn't fall in love with this class at first, but after I took this class for a while, I really enjoy the class and love this class!!
Dr. Horner is an incredibly genuine and knowledgeable teacher, and he equips students well to have faith conversations with unbelievers. Lectures are easy to follow with the course pack, although the lectures can be tedious at times. Definitely get to know Dr. Horner outside of class; he is wonderfully kind and thoughtful.
He teaches from his own book and for quizzes he asks questions such as "in class, the professor said this. true or false? " Which I think is the stupidest way to learn and the stupidest thing to get graded down for if you get wrong. You basically have to be in every lecture to hear him say every word in order to get an opportunity for A.
I LOVED Dr. Horner's class! He is so funny, and he is very wise when it comes to apologetics and thinking through your faith. His lectures are not dry, and he tells jokes, stories, and sometimes brought his guitar and sang with the class! Overall very easy class, yet you still will learn so much. I highly recommend taking his class!
You can only pass if you listen to every word he has ever said. He can't follow his notes, and the quizzes are not based on lectures or reading. All his quizzes are "according to the professor" and when you look in your notes to find the answer they're either not there or the correct answer is marked as something different on the test.
Professor Horner is a great prof for foundations and honestly people overreact about him being a bad professor. The online and scripture quizzes are easy as long as you go to lectures and read the assigned materials (one of the course materials is a note packet). The three papers are fairly easy to get good grades with but they are time consuming.
Dude is so boring. He makes us sign a digital covenant & barks at you if you have your phone out. he thinks hes the funniest person on the planet, & whips his guitar out at the most random times & makes us stand up & sing. He passes around 4-6 books every class & were expected to pretend were interested in them. I didn't read any of his books either
if you fail this class its literally on you, its easy and you don't really need to study. I will say be ready to get bored out of your mind. he's a cool guy but his class is not it. gives a decent amount of homework which is not bad.
If, and only if, you are eager to learn, Dr. Horner is a masterclass of philosophy and logic. He is a deeply kind and caring professor with a knack for telling funny stories and making the class feel like a cozy fireside talk with your grandpa. His story is very, very interesting and it reflects well on how he teaches. Brilliant man and professor.
Dr.Horner is such an amazing professor. Although his lectures were long he made them entertaining! Everything assigned in the class is heavily reading and lecture based so make sure to pay attention.
He is obviously very smart and knows a lot about what he teaches but he rambles on long tangents that are extremely unimportant to the class. The final exam was also so hard for no reason it was 90 from this 50 page reading assignment from the last week of class and had almost nothing from the rest of the class so I felt extremely unprepared.
