My favorite professor, great teacher and great personality.
Very good teacher. Gives handouts 2 class with notes on them. All info in notes is on the test. Extremely helpful. Knows what he's talking about!!!!
He is pretty easy, and knows what he is talking about, but there is not much interaction in the class.
Very effective instructor. Study guides and outlines provided for each section. Information is presented in a clear an concise manner. I highly recommend this professor
This was my favorite class of the semester. Dr. Houston was my favorite professor and really made the class enjoyable for me.
Great teacher, I am waiting an additional semester to get him. Definitely a favorite! Very helpful, will work with you if needed and knows his info. Great teacher, great asset to U of M.
He's horrible, there is absolutely no reason to even attend class... all you do in there is print off a syllabus and then he reads it verbatum.
seems nice, types notes, but i did bad because i never went to class...
He is an awesome proff, great personality and knowledgable. With his knowledge on World Political History and its psychological analysis, he deserves to be in Washington, can save the government from a lot of screw ups! (kidding) But seriously, you gotto experience this class once..tests are creative!
Boring man. I found it hard to go to class. Don't bother buying a book, I never opened mine. Study the syllabus, you'll be fine.
He's a very energetic and fun guy. He's very intelligent. The tests are straight from the notes. He makes the class interesting. My attendance for this class was higher than all my others. I highly recommend this class!
Amazing professor! Incredibly knowledgeable and very interesting. I was interested in the class before I took it, but now I consider this class to be one of the most defining of my college career. I highly recommend Dr. Houston for any student and for any class.
Smart and funny as hell. A true fountain of knowledge and the application thereof. His social deviancy class was so terribly interesting that it was the only one I never missed last fall.
byt the time i graduate in the spring I will have had 3 classes with him. There is a reason he gets nominated for Professor of the year all the time...find out for yourself.
He is the most awesome man i have ever met. One of the most interesting professors and the classes that he teachers are the best!
AWESOME!!! The most interesting class I have ever taken!! I am not a psyc major, but I would be if I could have him for every class. He is a brilliant man!! He is very interesting and I only fell asleep once in his class the whole year!
I did not get an understanding in this class. SO I have changed my major. Good luck to who ever takes him.
He ROCKS. He's a lil' crazy, but in a good way that makes pscy interesting. He's brillant and has a great wit. Laid back and easy to work with...if you have the chance to take him, go for it!
He is a good teacher and is very easy if you come to class and study the material. His evil class is easier than his history, but both are interesting and can easily be passed. If you take his night classes you are only in class for about 30 minutes. He gives you a photo copy of the notes at the beginning of class, so that you have all the info.
Interesting class. Gives notes for class but need 2 take notes in class 2 do well. Used difficult book. Take-home essay tests. Grades essays depending on how they measure up 2 other students' answers, not if your answers r complete/lacking.
Getting the notes from someone who goes to class is really the only thing that is needed to get a passing grade
Pysc of Deviance. very good teacher, follow along in the note guides he gives, and you can hardly help but pass. He's very orderly but also very funny in a cheeseball sort of way. And he always gives you a chance to ask questions before the test.
Psy of evil is not really a psychology class, it is more like a history class. I was interested in the beginning, but now the class has really no point in the field of psychology. There is no textbook he is referencing. You have to come to class and take notes to pass.
This was more of a history class than a psychology class. Do not take if really serious about psychology. Assigned two books, did not even discuss them or test. Talks too fast to take good notes and there is no reference book to look at either. Do not waste your money/time on the books or this class. 3 major exams that are history based, 1 paper.
This was a history class. Same content as US HIST 1877-to present. Pseudoscience really. No reference at all to psychology. Just says "this group is good, this one bad". Poorly organized, lazy, and a general lack of concern for students. Class very boring. Will let you out early. No attendance taken. Unclear about what is expected on exams.
I was disappointed in the Psy. of Evil class...what an interesting topic, how could you go wrong!?! Well, he did. It's basically a history class (as stated a few times before) about the "evil" people and groups throughout time that weve read about 100 times before (Nazis, Polpot, etc.)...Easy A but you can get the same info on the History Channel
Houston is a great professor. He's a bit crazy at times, but his teaching style is great-straight lecture, gives handouts that cover it all, and I've yet to crack the book and I have an A. You never stay the whole time either. I'd recommend him for classes, he's awesome.
Houston is a very boring teacher. I took forensics from him. His tests are short answer, essay, and multiple choice. I really don't recommend you to take him.
Portions of some of his lectures are inaccurate, and one can't help but get the impression that all of his lectures are about 20 years old. He's nice enough and seems to mean well, but overall he is an ineffective teacher and I do not recommend him.
People tend to forget that history and psychology go hand in hand. If you want to learn outside of the box then he is good. If you want to be spoon fed go elsewhere.
might need a tape recorder for class because he talks so fast..MUST go to class in order to do well on the exam
Great class! Very easy! I learned a lot in evil. not so much in deviance. Like others said before, it's a history class. You need to go to class half of the time in order to get A. B if you come week before class. 3 tests (20mc, 3 short essay, 1 long essay). 1 paper 3-5 pages.
Very easy teacher if you go to class. It's true that it's a bit like a history class. Try taking the class with a group of friends, one person go to class and record the lectures... and everyone share lectures. Out of our group of 5... we only go to class once every month and we're making As on the test. He talks fast- it's nice to pause and note.
True thisclass is more historical in context, but you have to know that Dr. Houston's background is in law. he talks fast, gets in and gets out, he lets you know, what to expect. He can be lack luster at times but it's class not American Idol. I would take him for everything I possibly could if I weren't already done with the major.
Attendance is not mandatory but I highly recommend it because some lectures are not from the book. He gives an outline of that day's lecture at the beginning of the class, and sticks to it! He's relatively easy, and his test s aren't that bad. You'll have a 5 page research paper, but it's very simple and he doesn't grade it hard. I would recommend.
This is a history class. Not what I expected at all. There is no textbook. Tests are straight from lectures. He does talk super-fast, and does not like to be asked questions. Gets annoyed if asked to repeat himself. Tests relatively easy. If you miss something in lecture, google it. I didn't really care for the class, but it was pretty easy.
TOUGH! I do not know why all of these people say he is easy. You can barely keep up. There are tons of notes you need to take but are so difficult to get because he talks so fast. No book, which makes it even more difficult. You have 3 exams and a reseacrh paper, each count 25% of grade. uhhh take someone else.
Psych of Personality....very tough to keep up with. 3 exams, research paper=25% each. kind fo a headache. I would take someone else if possible.
AWESOME lectures! 3 tests 16 multiple choice (answer 15), 3 essay question (answer 2 of the 3) and 1 essay question (you pick from 2 choices). Bring your comp to class and type notes directly onto study guide- makes it easier to keep up with! Follow study guide for tests- no tricks. Don't be late/rude- he calls you out. Go to class reg. & its fun!
Three test that are multiple choice, short answer, and essay. He gives four essay questions to study and you have to do one on the test. He doesn't grade too hard but you have to have some knowledge on the subject. Probably should go to class and take notes. An A is achievable with a few hrs of studying for each test.
Very easy A if you go to class and study. If gives you a review sheet with essay questions only have to answer one of the four essays on the test. Test are multiple choice short answer and essay. Attendance is not mandatory. He sends out an outline of everything discussed in class. However, if gives additional info. so I would not miss class.
He is very well-educated in psychology, law, and especially history. Like most of his courses they are history lessons pertaining to Psyc. Attend lectures and note on his outlines and all will be fine for an easy A.
Houston was hilarious, super-smart, and quirky all at the same time. I recommend any of his classes so long as you attend and fill in the study guides. He goes over the things that will be tested so brush up and it's an easy A!
Dr. Houston is an amazing professor...fascinating on so many levels. I found myself looking forward to every single class and I thought about the lectures long after they were over. In fact, I've never enjoyed a psych class more than this one...and I'm one of those straight A nerds.
This guy is NOT easy!!!! If you like Psychology, want to learn about Deviance...um yea- this is an American History class AT BEST. Not nice eiher. Talks fast and if you ask him ANYTHING he snaps. Lunatic. Save your GPA and take ANYTHING else!!!!
Dr. Houston is extremely knowlegeable about the material he teaches. The class is extrememly boring but easy if you make review day and form a study group. He is easily irritated with questions. He doesn't use a book so you may want to record lectures. Again study groups a great if you're not going to attend class regularly. Doesn't require attend
I took him for Psychology of Evil and Deviance. He is brilliant! If you are not interested in history then this is definitely not the class for you. He is extremely knowledgeable about the subject(s) and will tell you things you never knew about things you've been learning all of your school life.
Read a few of the other comments and I didn't think he was boring at all. He is very knowledgeable about the material and makes class interesting. I felt like he was very willing to let you get the best grade possible. He e-mails all notes and study guides (exams come straight from study guide). I'm taking two of his classes next semester!
I absolutely loved his class. It is very interesting and he is very knowledgeable. I would highly recommend him to anyone. Go to class and take notes and the tests will be a walk in the park!
Quirky guy knows what he's talking about. His tests seem like they would be difficult but as long as you go to the review session and ask questions you're set. I took both Deviance and Social psych from him and they're great classes.
Dr. Houston is a very knowledgeable and enthusiastic teacher. He can be funny. Don't show up late or he may call you out. PAY ATTENTION! He does not like to repeat himself especially if you weren't listening. His tests are based on his lectures. No books. 3 tests. and one paper, each count 25% of the final grade. Fairly easy if you study.
I really enjoyed his class. He was the type of teacher that expected you to come to class if you wanted to pass. All of his Tests are based off the lectures in class and the only way you could fail his class was if you didn't come. If you were there in class taking notes on the information he provides for you, it could be a piece of cake!
Dr. Houston is very knowledgeable and thorough. I took a summer class with him and the 3 (easy) tests were all based on the lectures They consist of multiple choice, short answer, and one essay question. A recorder is encouraged. He only provides an outline for each section & he does not do power points/notes on the board or anything like that.
I took Houston for Psychology of Evil and Legal and Forensic Psychology and he is one of the best teachers I have ever had. He was never annoyed when I had questions for him after class, and as long as you study and take notes, you shouldn't have a problem with the tests. He's very smart, and the classes themselves are fascinating.
Very interesting, but this class had virtually nothing to do with psychology and was basically a history class. Never the less, it was engaging and very informative. He didnt use a book and just lectured from memory every day for over an hour and sends out an outline to add too using what he says in his lectures. Very helpful also.
One of my favorite professors. Incredibly intelligent, he classes are very detailed and interesting. I've taken three with him and loved all of them. He appreciates intelligent questions. Just don't be rude or late. If you do the work and pay attention, his classes are not hard, and he was usually willing to answer questions after class.
Tests off lectures. No power points and no book. One paper. Record the class and it'll be easy. He also gives the answers to the study guide in the class before the test so BE AT THAT CLASS
I am a psyc major & an honors student, I do well in all of my classes. I took this class because I thought it would be fun. It was not. It has nothing to do with psychology. It was just a really really dry American history class. He was very unhelpful. No textbook, no powerpoint- ONLYl lecture. Cant miss class ever. Lecture outlines do not help.
If you want to go in depth with the history of psychology, then Dr. Houston is the professor for you. All of his classes are focused with history, politics and nazis. Pay close attention to his lectures (audio record him, if possible) bcuz he hates repeating himself when going over the study guide. Three tests one paper.
If you are a visual learner this is not the teacher for you. He does not use powerpoints nor does he write on the board. He is an old fashion, lecture only professor. All in all his class was ok. He is very open to helping when his students ask him to.
Dr. Houston is a wonderful professor. He gives outlines and if you come to class and take notes you will pass. You will have to study but as said before, if you took notes you will pass. Tests are straight from notes! Best part is no textbook to buy!!!
Dr. Houston is a wonderful professor. I really enjoyed this class. Interesting things to learn. He gives outlines and if you come to class and take notes you will pass. You will have to study but as said before, if you took notes you will pass. Tests are straight from notes!
Psyc of Evil - Dr. Houston is a wonderful professor. He gives outlines and if you come to class and take notes you will pass. Tests are straight from notes! He really knows his stuff. He makes class interesting. Best part is no textbook to buy!!!
I took Dr. Houston's deviance course and it wasn't that bad. Lectures the entire time. Got out early every time. More like a history course rather than psychology. 3 tests that consists of multiple choice, short answer and one essay question. One 5 page research paper. No book. Recorded his lectures and it helped me a lot for the tests. Got an A!!
Be sure to record class and take lots of notes. He gives you a guideline, but if you zone out it's easy to get lost. He loves answering questions, but every answer has to end in a joke (make sure to laugh at it). He grades hard on the essays, taking off points for no other reason than "just feeling like it"
Loved his lectures! Be sure to take good notes (if you have a laptop, bring it to take notes - much faster)! He goes through material quickly, so be prepared. Tests are pretty easy as long as you study!
Dr. Houston is not my favorite professor. His Social Psyc class was much more history-based than I was anticipating. Don't expect sympathy or empathy for your hardships, even if your parent dies during his class. Do work ahead of time if you can. The tests are the PowerPoints, and there was one paper that was relatively easy.
Dr. Houston is by far my favorite professor at U of M. I have had multiple classes with him and enjoyed every one. There was a time when i was in a sticky situation and he cut me some slack. He is very understanding and intelligible. I would highly recommend to anyone.
I am taking Dr. Houston now for social psychology. His lectures are short, he runs through them pretty fast. Its best to record him. We have 3 exams and a paper. The paper was fairly easy and the the exams are too as long as you take notes and record his lectures. Study guides are provided which he goes over a class period before the test.
I took Dr. Houston last semester for social psychology. The lectures were short and he started class ON TIME. I recommend people to record the lectures and take clear notes. The notes will help you pass the tests. A short paper was assigned- max 5pgs. This class is an easy A as long as you take good notes. He also took time to go over study guides.
3 tests and a paper, but he was a very easy grader. Lectures have everything you need to know for the test, and remember to take good notes. Definitely an easy A.
No textbooks or power points. I am usually an A/B student and currently struggling. Do not take him if you are a visual learner. short classes.
Very easy class as long as you come to class, pay attention and take good notes. There isn't a book and he doesn't teach from notes but from an outline that you will have. His tests are multiple choice, short answer and an essay question. His study guide will tell you the essay questions and a few of the short answer.
He made the lecture interesting and we were let out of class early most of the time
His Legal & Forensic class was pretty easy. The class was an hour and 25 minutes, but he rarely ever went past 35 minutes. His outlines are exactly like the exams which there are three of (multiple choice, short answer, and essay questions). There was also a paper on a topic of your choice. I did the bare minimum and still did well on everything.
Amazing Teacher! I love lecture style classes, and if you do as well, you'll love this class. He makes them very interesting and I always expected to laugh in the class. His tests are easy if you come to class. Also, he seems to really love his job which is refreshing .
Dr. Houston was a cool enough teacher; but he taught more law than forensic psych. The first half of the semester was just an overview of how courts work rather than how psychology factors in. For many of us, that's disappointing as that is not what the course description promised. Don't take if you want to learn Forensic Psych
Very interesting class. There was no book and tests were based off his lectures. I liked that attendance was not mandatory however I would not recommend skipping many classes because the tests were solely based off the lectures. He does hand out study guides though! Easy A as long as you pay attention!
I stopped going to the lecture about halfway into the semester because I realized it was pointless. EVERYTHING is in the book that he teaches. He let out early though so that was pretty nice and if you do go to the lecture it's pretty interesting. There's a lot of outside work that he rarely talks about. Too much to keep up with sometimes.
Dr. Houston is a great teacher. He was my first psychology teacher in college and then I took him for forensics. He is smart, funny, wants you to learn, patient, fair, and a real asset to the university. I really enjoy the lectures. Real down to earth guy.
Inspiring and fair. If you land in his class, you will not be sorry. Makes learning fun. I respect him a great deal.
I had a difficult time understanding his method of teaching, however I managed to make it through the course. I really appreciate that he makes himself available to assist you with assignments,
I took him for intro to psyc on TR, and we almost never stayed the full class period. best pre-req professor and class.
He is one of my favorite professors! He is easy and cares about your grade. I took legal/forensic psych and made an A! His notes are not that detailed, however attendance and taking notes help. There will be 3 exams and a paper due. Show up+ listen+ take notes A
Dr. Houston is a brilliant man. He obviously knows what he's talking about and the way he presents the material makes the class interesting. There are 3 exams and a paper, all of which are fairly easy as long as you go to class because the outlines he gives are not very detailed. He also goes over the study guide the day before the exam.
Provided outlines for lectures and exams, will go over exams before class. Must attend to pass. However, you arent getting moneys worth by taking him. He will cancel class often.. Can be rude to people showing up late, so be on time. He acts like he is never wrong on a subject. Overall, nice class and teacher. But isnt worth it.
Very good, very engaging professor who grades on few things but prepared the class well
I have taken this teacher twice now. You will either LOVE his class or HATE it. To pass his class all you have to do is show up and take additional notes on the outlines he gives and I promise you will pass. Most of the class is him talking but he is funny and very smart. DO NOT DISRESPECT HIM. He is strict about getting to class on time.
I'm currently in his Legal/ Forensic Psychology class and I really enjoy it and him. I love lecture heavy classes, so this class is for me. The grade is 3 tests and a paper. He does give outlines for in class, BUT you HAVE to take notes during his lectures. It's also important for you to show up on time or he gets annoyed. Gives study guides. LOVE
Overall good instructor. Easygoing. Very punctual though so be in your seat by the time class starts or he will say something to you. A little behind because he doesn't use eCourseware, so good luck keeping up with your grades for the semester! There's only 4 grades though (3 exams and paper), so it should be fine. 8.5/10
