Funny,nice, and fair
hard teacher
hard teacher, alot of reading and writing
He lectures you on one thing, then tests you from something completly different; then spends the next day after the tests asking why are your grades so low. Grrr!! 2 Midterms, 1 Paper, + ex. cr. that can raise your grade by an entire grade. Not worth it
lectures were boring
his lectures are boring, but if you read the text you will do fine. the tests questions are pretty broad and he offers a ton of extra credit (up to an entire grade level!)
His lectures will put you to sleep. He lectures on one thing and give exams on another. I don’t think he’s a bad guy just a bad instructor. I wouldn’t recommend him to anyone unless you don’t mind getting some sleep in class.
Hes a good teacher, the other people who rated him probably didnt go to class. He grades fair, Hard to get an A but easy to get a B. Nice guy too.
very good teacher..very helpful..does his job the right way..if you don't want to work a bit and read the material..don't think about passing his class..very nice guy + AT
BORING puts me to sleep everyday:(
Boring lectures, but necessary to go to class because a lot of info is discussed. very important to read the text and if you do these 2 things you will be okay and at least get a B.
People think he's boring, I find him very interesting. His tangents are relevant, he's easy to understand, and he gives easy quizzes. What's not to like? He has a very likeable personality too. I would definitely recommend him.
Although I failed his class the first time, but he really motivates you to want to learn history. He also give you some study secrets to use on tests.
Basically if you read the text, you should do fine on his tests. Very nice guy, and if you need help he will gladly give you help.
Very nice and clear teacher.
His lectures are extremely beneficial for the tests but are boring..Expect to fall asleep occasionally.. Tests are somewhat easy, if you study..Take the skills class if offered for it is 40 extracreditpts....makes you sing in class
He's not very helpful. The lectures are dull and extremely boring which makes it a tedious task to take the notes without falling asleep. Required course so why not get it over with?
this teacher is a cute lil man. his lectures are boring tho.. i barely ever listen... but as long as u read the text and know the terms that he gives to u.. ull get a B in the class fosho..
His class is boring like hell, and he trys too hard to make jokes. Testes are easy as long as you just keep reading the assigned text, you'll do fine. At least a C.
avoid him if at all possible. the most tedious and obnoxious boring instructor on campus. lectures are hella boring and exams are based on specific picky details from the reading
This class may seem very interesting and easy becuase you get to sing in class, listeing to music before class and there's a teacher helper, but it's not. These two guys cannot calculate your grade for crap. Overall, not a good teacher or class.
BEWARE OF THIS GUY!!! i would have to agree with EVERYONE that he is tough...he is not helpful...he is boring...his exams are easy( since i read word-by-word from the text/study studyguild) but his grading on essay is extremely hard!! BEWARE!!
Boring lectures. Take the extra credit class: they'll answer any questions. Only one paper due but have A LOT of examples, like 6-8, a paragraph on each, that got me an A. He is obnoxious when it comes to cell phones ringing so beware.
He makes everything clear and he'll try anything to help you learn but what is the point if the test is not relevant to his lectures. The text is only based on lectures and the text. Speaking of lectures, his lectures are boring! Nice teacher though.
Damn....this man sucks!! boring lecture. The quiz questions are not related the text. no way to study yourself.if you're normal person, guarantee C. trust me, never take his class, or you'll in trouble.
i fell asleep every day in his class. dont let him go anywhere with his guitar. break all beatles CD's. and tell him to shut up. If you do take him, never leave your cell fone on or youll hear about it the whole class.
David Howard is the MAN!! It is history so if your are sleepy, duh...you will fall asleep. Quit being a young punk and learn. DHP is the man to teach!
He's kinda boring, but then again, most history is. His method works EXTREMELY well as long as you don't skip class and take good lecture notes. His one essay assignment is graded VERY hard, but you can easily get a "B" without even cracking a book.
WORST TEACHER IN THE WORLD! i regret taking his class. his lectures are extremely boring and he treats his students like 10 year olds. if a cell phone goes off, he'll stop the whole class and yell at the one person for 10 minutes. wht a waste of time. do yourself a favor and don't take his class.
i would say a DEFINITE NO on this teacher. worst teacher i've had at DA by far. His lectures are supposedly out of the book but aren't and he's just SO BORING. Makes this subject 10 times worse if you take it with him.
Oh my gosh. Boring, of course, it's history. Lectures and gives questions on the test he says are in the book (But they aren't even mentioned!!!) Easy to pass the class, but grades the essay worse than an anal english teacher! Study terms for the test, read the chapters, and you'll get by with a B.
if you want to learn something, do not take his class. if you want to be interested, entertained or amused, do NOT take this class. not a fair grader, does not like it when you ask questions about how papers were graded, disappointing. honestly killed a subject that was already about dead people.
Pitney's pretty cool. I read a lot of bad reviews here, but it appears they were posted by morons. His lectures are designed to supplement the reading with facts not obtainable from the book (you therefore must attend class.) The reading's interesting (especially the equiano narrative) Good teacher.
This teacher is the best. He is not that boring. NOT A HARD CLASS at all. You can pass if you do that work. Most of the student who say something bad about him are stupid.
cool teacher, made me cry after lecture on slavery....so real,
oh gosh, you can seriously go to sleep and still get an A or a B. If you choose not to sleep, then the lectures are pretty interseting and insightful. Just do the study guides for the test and you'll be fine!
he could be interesting but he isnt. the class was easy but his lectures were horrible. He rambles on and on. I can understand why some people would enjoy this class but I had a very hard time sitting through a 50 minutes class! He isnt the worst teacher but he for sure isnt the best!
he was cool online but i hear he's not in person if you have to listen to him everyday
He is a very helpful instructor that wants the best for his students. He offers plenty of extra credit so take advantage of it. History is boring to me but the slavery section was very interesting. Quizzes are very simple but tests are a little bit harder. Just follow the syllabus because it makes it easier. Rambles on some what but who doesn't.
His class is easy. You have two tests, essay, and a final.I got a B on the two tests,an A on my essay,& an A on my final.Tests & essay are easy. You do have to sit through the lectures but they are not boring.I thought the class was going to be hard and boring but it was the opposite of that. He is helpful when you need it and he is very nice.
If you learn from lectures, hes awesome. 95%+ of tests are from lectures. He can be a little borring, but I really didnt have a problem. Dont think I had to read either novel to answer questions. If you cant learn from lectures or bore easily, stay away!
easy teacher! no way you can fail his class because he gives so many extra credit opportunities. He knows his history.... seriously you can tell he loves what he does.
Go to class- don't miss any- take good notes on the terms in his syllabus = A
How can anyone complain about HP? His classes are not hard at all. Go to class, take good notes= A. Most of the material on the exams are from what he lectures about in class/overheads.
When he says to do the online quizzes provided bythe book, he's NOT kidding.it's 85% of his tests. Just by memorizing the quiz questions you're guaranteed a B. the class is just 3 tests, and nothing else. The videos are pointless, just read the book thorougly and do the ONLINE QUIZES. (im not sure if this applies to his reuglar course)
he's a good teacher. he is very clear and he tells you what he expects on tests. but you do need to read the book. all tests are based on the book. nice guy. he wants you to pass, so he offers a lot of extra credit as well.
Howard-Pitney is a very nice man. He is clear about what he wants, and he presents the appropriate opportunities to succeed in the class. Keep the syllabus notes up to date and read the book before tests, and it's an easy A. Lectures can get boring, so try to stay awake; bringing in a snack helps.
JUST READ THE TEXT AND SHOW UP TO CLASS.. YOU WON'T HAVE TO REVIEW MUCH AT ALL. 3 TESTS. FINAL NOT CUMULATIVE. 1 ESSAY. EASY A. NICE GUY. JUST BORING... AND SAYS "LOOSELY BROADLY TOO MUCH. YOU'LL BE HAPPY YOU TOOK HIS CLASS THOUGH
This was an OK class. I took it for general ed. The only reason I got a B instead of an A, was Im not too interested in US history. He is definitely knowledgable in the material, but lectures can be somewhat boring. I'd suggest doing the reading outside of class and just go from the overheads in the syllabus and you'll get decent grades on the test
I fall asleep in class but it's quite easy if u keep up with the reading (and u review before the final). he's no pushover though, so don't expect to just ace the exams without proper preparation. Having taken his lecture classes and distance classes. His distances classes are CONSIDERABLY harder than his lecture class, i had to work almost twice as hard for an A in his distance as opposed to the lecture class.
Take this class. HP wants his students to succeed, and offers plenty of opportunity for that. No surprises. If you listen in class, read the text, and study your notes- you will do fine. (Just as in any other class.) HP is always PC and politically fair, and even livens up his lectures with a song once in a while. Good class, highly recommended.
barely ever went to class.....i just coppied notes from a friend and studied the week of the test.....and there's one papre you write for the whole quarter and it's pretty easy
Oh boy are his lectures boring. If you paid any attention in high school history you should do okay. You can get a B without reading the books as long as you have a general understanding of history. He knows his stuff, and wishes the best for his students, but this is the first class I've ever fallen asleep in, and that is saying a lot.
you gotta be in class to do well but lectures are boooring!! quizzes and exams are really easy if you know a little about US history. no hw and he plays guitar once or twice (and even makes you sing!)
Thought I was going to fail his class because both my midterms I got a "D" on because I didnt study so well... You have to read and study the book to even pass the class. I asked for extra credit and he didnt hesitate to give it to me so I can pass. I received an "A" on the final because the extra credit was added to my score and received a "C+"!
Mr. Howard-Pitney is a very helpful and nice teacher, but History 17A has been the most boring class I have ever taken. It is hard not to fall asleep in his class everyday and good attendance is mandatory. If you LOVE history..you may not be completely bored. Otherwise this class is horrific. Walk in adding is easy, he'll take anyone!! Easy A.
I took the course online which I did well because of the grade curve. 3 exams only and they're not hard. there are extra credits which helps a lot!!! The teacher is nice, but responds slow to emails!!!
Horrible teacher!!! He makes an easy subject difficult. He worries more about punishing the people who don't go to class than helping the ones that do. His lectures are unhelpful and he rambles on about stuff that doesn't help you get ready for the exams. He likes the sound of his own voice too much. He can't teach. TAKE KNITTEL FOR HISTORY.
He's nice and has a sense of humor sometimes. I took the online class and it was curved based on 3 exams, so the class was kind of easy.
A nice teacher. TA is nicer. Turn in your stuff on time. Go to class on time. Tests are based on memory. Multiple choice is the hard part compared to the writing. Lectures are incredibly boring. And pretty much usless for the tests.
I have the class as a P/NP. Therefore I rarely go to class, the class itself is not hard, essay question is pretty easy, I got an A on it. Tests are not hard just make sure you read the textbooks, he treats his students as if they were in grammar school. Very annoying, nice guy but boring and annoying. He just gets on my nerve a lot.
History is one of my worst subjects, but prof is passionate enough about subject to make it not as bad as it could be. Very understanding. Randomly takes roll via parscores, just show up every day unless you have a good excuse. Oral history paper, two exams, and a final (T or F questions and an essay for exams). Get essay questions before exams.
teacher is great. helps you immensely with easy extra credit stuff. always in his office and very easy to talk to. he loaned me one of the books because i could not afford it. i plan on taking more classes from him
Took this class online. Read the books, watch the videos, and take the exams. It was an easy class and I learned a lot about US history! The make-up essay is easy if you remember what you read. I noticed a lot of people cheating on the exams but only losers cheat. Easy A and the prof is super helpful... he replies to all his emails timely. :)
distance class. it was actually pretty hard. i got b's and c's on his tests i got ONE a because of a curve... but did all the extra credit. take that "extra class" extra credit if its offered, its really easy and gives you a full grade extra credit. go to the extra credit session before the final, its really important!
Ok I definitely have to stick up for Howard-Pitney.First of all, he is not boring. His lectures are really interesting and inspiring.I definitely learned a lot from him than my teachers in high school who really sucked. He goes at a slow pace so you dont get lost and if you sit at the front you can really focus.he is a really great teacher
Very nice guy who really wants his students to succeed.
Howard-Pitney is a pretty good teacher; offers enough extra credit to boost your grade! I'm not a history person, but I learned historical stuff from him! History may sound boring but has alot of significance. Just don't talk when he's talking. I got a good decent grade; barely read the textbook; take that extra credit class, it will help you!
Great teacher, but one piece of advice don't walk out of his class when he is lecturing, he gets really mad. Other than that he is a pretty mellow guy.
I am NOT a history person, it bores me to death. However, you can tell he's really passionate about the subject. He's very knowledgeable. The class is pretty easy to do well in. He offers a lot of extra credit and has a really helpful packet to go along with his lectures. Just study the packet, take notes, and read the assigned chapters and you'll
Bless his heart he's a sweet man, but I found his lectures a bit boring. He is very passionate about the subject and willing to help students succeed though. Just about everything he lectures is in the book, so if you read and can sit in class and really tune in to what he says, you will do well on tests. There's also two short books and an essay.
He's great :)Easy class. Just show up for lecture.Don't talk.Take notes on everything he says.Tests come directly from lecture and a few questions from the text.TAKE IT OVER THE SUMMER!!!only 1 essay and 2 easy tests!
Mumbles too much, lectures are hard to absorb, and the teacher forces you to discuss them with other people in each lecture and write up a summary of the lecture for attendance. This guy needs a microphone badly, because many people cannot understand his lectures well.
Took distance learning class. The class was extremely hard since I have no knowledge of U.S. history at all. 3 Tests, all based on the text book. Take extra credit review class would be helpful. I got B- at the end.
as a history major, i can see he's a pretty good teacher. test are extremely straight forward (and even kinda funny cuz he puts jokes in em)! but watch out for the essay. he grades that thing like an english teacher, and you BETTER know what youre talking about. take him during the summmerrr!
He's a nice guy. Tries to throw in corny jokes sometimes. Other than that, his class is super boring because he goes way too in-depth on the subject, which none of it applies to the study guide and tests. Buy the study guide and get the info from the book, not from the lectures! Straight up lecture class! 2 tests, 1 essay, 1 final. Easy class.
Boring class. Boring lectures. Boring texts. Easy tests and essay. You will have to take 3 tests and write one essay. The essay, although not very difficult, is the hardest part. If you take good notes you will not need to read the texts for the tests. Just make sure you write down everything that he says. Got an A+ without much effort.
Super boring class! This class is a waste of time. He doesn't use PPT or other visual aids. He just talks (and sometime sings), so taking a note is very difficult. Pointless lecture...he isn't creative, so students are half asleep. The most boring class ever!
he recommends to take a page of notes every class but it was impossible. extremely boring! i don't know why i bothered coming to class every day when i learned absolutely nothing. i regret taking this class and pretty sure it ruined my GPA, unless you love history do not take this class, but if you happen to, do the extra credit class! it'll save y
Took class Fall session. Class is extremely boring. Attendance is kind of mandatory, he makes you put a notecard with your name on the board. Mainly you do all the work yourself out of the book at home. Barely went to class and ended up with a B-. I would not reccomend this teacher at all. Pick a different one.
Ok, this guy is super nice, but BORING. It was hard to pa attention to him when all he does is talk for the whole 50 min. he would discuss an overhead topic and alot of the time he would drift off into another unrelated subject. He sang a few times. No learning aides. Just talking. you have to REALLY take notes and pay attention.
oy I almost fell asleep in his class the only thing I like was when we sang in class and when he take attendence. I am glad I finished that class
Bad. He tries to grade the essay like an english teacher and that is totally not right. he called me ineligible for ewrt 1a and it made me down. now im doing perfectly well on my ewrt 1a class. Boring lectures, not helpful and just awful.
A very boring instructor, but his lectures are clear and understandable. It's history, so you start at 13,500 BCE and work your way to about 1800ACE. He will play guitar once and expect you to sing.Tests are easy with freebie questions like "Does your professor like you?" Take lecture notes, read chapters, get an A.
this guy is the nicest. i agree that he's boring, he tends to only lecture and he rambles. MAKE SURE you pay attention in his class. his lectures sort of follows the book, but not really so make sure you take good notes!
He's a nice guy, but his lectures are so dull and extremely superficial, which is irritating because he always stresses that his exams at 70% lecture. He often gets sidetracked on tangents and forgets where he leaves off. Disorganized.
SO BORING. his lectures are really hard to concentrate on which makes it difficult to do well on the midterms (I studied the book, online notes, and lecture notes and got a better grade than most people which was a low C). He also grades essays more strict than any english teacher i've had. Not a good professor to take
Mr. Howard-Pitney is great! He's a very intelligent, clear speaker and does well to cover all of the topics that show up on the exams. He's a really nice guy. He will occasionally play guitar and have the class sing songs! His exams aren't very hard, and he wishes the best of every student. just pay attention and do the work, and you'll do fine!
Took his online class. You NEED to read the textbooks to do well on the tests. And on some tests, he asks, "what song did I sing for the video lecture," so you have to watch the vids as well. His essay killed me in this class. Doesn't clarify what he wants, Took off loads of points for not going over what he didn't write on the prompt. Harsh grader
You have to read the textbook for this class and pay attention to his lecture. He offered 50 extra credit points for taking an adjunct study skills class, so that bumped my grade up a whole letter. His tests get harder and he's a little dull to listen to, but a decent teacher.
Lectures are long and uninteresting. They hardly go over his topic sheets which are the main focus of the tests. You really should read the textbook. Don't use your phone in class. He will kick you out. His essays destroy everyones grades. He grades harder than English professors and he takes a lot of points away unnecessarily. He takes attendance.
Took his class during summer, good thing about it was that there was only 3 big tests(including final) and one essay. He makes us read a book that he wrote and write an essay about it. But,he has unrealistic expectations. He grades very harshly on essays. Tests are not too hard but you NEED to study. I passed the class but I dnt recommend him.
I took his summer class. His lectures are mostly boring and he goes off on random things too much. Focus on all of the study guide sheets he has and define all the words to be prepared. Read the book too. I got A's on his tests, but his essay was harsh. C- on the essay even though I have an A- in EWRT 1A. The essay was on a book that he wrote.
Mr. HP is a great guy. While he seems kind of corny at first, he tends to grow on you as the quarter progresses, and he's very knowledgeable in his field of study. He's also a very patient and understanding man, so feel free to ask him questions that you aren't sure of.
OK so if you want to get an A in his class do the following: 1)go to Every lecture 2)take a lot of notes 3)Read the text book 4)keep up with the study guide 5)write an essay
Great passion for teaching. Tough grader, but only because he expects people to have a little formal training in writing composition. Always made me feel important and welcome. Even when reprimanding students he was nice and entertaining. Everyday left class with a smile. Many thanks Prof
Mr. HP knows what he's talking about, which is really important to me in a professor. All you need to succeed is to follow the lecture notes. There is one essay to write, which is very simple to do. If you have any problems with something (in your personal life or with the essay) he is very understanding and lenient. I'm glad I took the class.
He's a super nice guy, but his lectures are extremely long winded and boring. He hardly puts up any notes, so basically, you have to listen to his talking to write down good notes. Honestly, his class isn't too difficult, but his lectures just aren't my cup of tea. 3 tests-2 midterms & 1 noncumulative final, as well as an essay.
Interesting instructor and a very nice guy. People say he used to grade the term paper too hard, but he's mellowed out now on that.
A really cool guy, plays songs for us. Its not hard to succeed in class.
Good teacher.
one of the best history teachers ever!!!! I learned a lot. You will do great in the class if you read the book and follow directions .Take this teacher if you want to learn history. i plan on taken all of his other history classes.
He's a friendly guy who will help you do well.
If you take and study class notes and do the reading a good grade is very achievable.
Very nice, not too hard
Do what he says to to succeed in the class, and you will!
Very nice professor who is always willing to help and wants his students to pass. His lectures can be a little boring and his powerpoints are mostly pictures, so you need to take notes. Essay and tests were very easy if you pay attention.
He's such a nice teacher and he actually wants you to pass! The classtest is easy, just study. Also he's very friendly and willing to help.
Don't readget a textbook. Take GOOD notes during class (class notesthe test). Only read for the ONE essay he assigns the entire quarter. Do that and you are guaranteed an A+.
Boring lectures and he sings for you which is cool I guess. Pretty awkward in my opinion. Tries to make jokes but he just gets pity laughs. Very unenthusiastic and just in general boring.
Professor Howard-Pitney is wonderful! His passion in the subject is highlighted in every class through his pronounce knowledge! He is so helpful. Ask questions if you are unclear about something and see him at his office hours for clarity! 45-minutes is not enough to cover the history of the US, but professor does a great job at it!
His class only has midterms, an exam, and an essay, so you have to do well on all of those. He is genuine in wanting to teach his material and really cares about students. If you need clarification it's better to ask after class because he will shut you down during the lecture. Must take :) Have someone sign you in, and definitely buy the books.
Hes a good teacher. He teaches well and lectures the entire time. Its kinda hard to pass because he only grades 1 essay and 3 tests. Study! The only problem with him is his attitude. He hates when students ask questions during classwhen you make him do something for you and will try his best to embarrass you. He doesnt understand that we pay him
I took Professor Pitney online course and he is the best history teacher I ever had. He's very helpful and responsive to emails. Online course is easy as long as you do the readings, learning curves (do as much as you can), watch his lecture videos and the exams. He also play guitar! Overall, he's a good instructor! Definitely recommend him.
Took 17B online. Super easy. Never read the text. Weekly quizzes and learning curve hw. You could literally copy and paste all the quizexam questions in Google and get 100% on exams. Must watch his videos to answer some of the essay portion, but you can copypaste some of essay questions too. Want easy A and put no effort? Take this class.
Had him for Hist 17A and the class was tougher than it should. You will pass the class if you attend EVERY class meeting, which are usually 2 hours and 30 min long and sometimes VERY tiresome. Hard grader on mid terms and essay. Had many points taken off my essay for these reasons: thesis wasn't in the intro(really??), minor grammar mistakes, etc.
A good professor and one of the nicest people around.
Mr. H-P was great. He's a nice guy and I learned a lot from his class. Please make sure to take notes on a separate notebook or on paper and dont take notes on the topic sheets he gives, because youll be really confused on the tests. Willing to work with you and I will definitely take him again for 17C
Great guy and teacher
A really nice guy and great instructor
I loved this guy.
Great class taught by nice man.
very boring class! He is nice. The only thing is he treats you like your in high school last time I checked its college. gets very annoyed easily. Id recommend taking another history teacher if your taking history!
Great teacher. Goes over everything every carefully. What I liked best about his classes is the structure. If you are looking for a teacher that has everything laid out from the beginning of the quarter David is for you. I would recommend his classes highly.
I have had enough of this guy. He treats you like you're a freshman in high school, his lectures are boring and consist of him talking for the whole class period. He gives you 3 tests and one paper and that is entirely what your grade is made up of (aka, lazy teacher). The tests don't relate to his lectures so you have to teach yourself eveything.
If history is not your strong suit, don't take this class. You basically have to teach yourself everything before the tests (2 midterms & 1 final) plus a paper. He's hard to pass his tests are not related to what he talks about during class so good luck passing. I wouldn't recommend taking him, honestly.
he is the worst person i met. ask us to bring our friends to class in the beginning, and there is only 30% students left in the end. very tough grade on essays and tests. u cannot be late and cannot go to restroom during the lecture. if you insist to take, dont bring your friends. good luck.
David is a great teacher as long as you take some notes in class(he has topic sheets online which make note taking easy). Also, he is very approachable in his office hours, just don't tell him his class is hard/he should give you a break, because he will laugh at you(and you will deserve it). There is an adjunct program for the class, it is helpful
Super nice guy, and funny too! You have to show up and take notes in order to pass his exams which are fairly easy. He's very passionate and knowledgeable about history. Grade is based off of 3 exams and 1 essay which you have to read a short book and write about it. Easy class, and fun, sweet professor!
I don't know about the experience of those who take him face to face, but the class was very easy to take online. There's 3 midterms (no final), 10 quizzes, 1 essay, 3 forum posts, 3 videos to watch, 2 books to read. You have to read the books to pass. I learned a lot from the books and videos. I finished the class with about 98%. To me, easy A.
One of the nicest guys around and a really interesting teacher.
I've never liked US history before but he made it really interesting. HE even sings songs! Getting a good grade is very achievable with a little work.
Great instructor, caring person.
Howard-Pitney's great. He sang us historical songs.
Take good notes in this class, memorize the dates and people he mentions (he'll give a heads up if something he's talking about will be on the test). It is lecture heavy for sure, but he has a nice loud voice so you won't be put to sleep. He tells the class about the material as if he was telling a story. I typed everything he said and studied it.
History students: there is one thing I have to make clear if u wanna take his class. First of all, the lectures are not really relates to the tests so u have to study very hard to get a satisfactory grade. Secondly, the class is not about general understanding of American Promise but much more than that.
He was great if you wanted to just come in and learn, very lecture heavy and lectures basically everyday. Your grade is determined by 2 mid terms and a final, as well as a paper. There are a few times where you can tell he gets annoyed, but overall is a caring and chill guy. I'd take him again.
Lecture heavy for sure, however his power points that accompany his lectures are just pictures with no useful content. He's a nice man and very understanding . You have to read 2 books and I recommend reading them before they become relevant.
He's nice but his lectures are extremely boring. Just do the homework and you'll be ok.
The man knows a lot. However, lectures are not greatly useful/informative. Lectures are ALWAYS scatterbrained and are not organized/fluid. Lectures can get EXTREMELY dry. Tests (x3) are 65% conceptual multiple choice AND 35% written vocab. Have to read 2 books+1 essay. Understand textbook CONCEPTS for tests. Can cruise in class, until tests.
Few powerpoints, you have to just write down what he lectures. You need a laptop to take good notes. Use the topic sheets as an outline. There are 3 exams and 1 paper. The exams cover SO much material, you need to read the textbook and study outside of class for sure (on top of reading 2 assigned books). You can't just coast in his class.
Was pretty easy for me. 3 exams and 1 essay for the entire quarter. All 100 points. His class was pretty lecture heavy, but you can tell he was really passionate in history and I digged that. You gotta show up to class though. Overall, study the topic sheets and you should be good. No way you can really fail.
Nice guy, good class
Caring and interesting.
Nice guy, good instructor
Interesting lectures
I really liked him, a very decent guy
I'd definitely take him again!
Excellent instructor
He's a real expert on Civil Rights leaders
Fought falling asleep at all his lectures. Talks about each power point slide for thirty minutes. One paper and a few tests to base the class on. He requires you know lots of information for the tests. History can be an interesting class with the right teacher, but not with this class. Very non-engaging.
Screwed up the online class set-ups, but still expects us to turn everything on time. Trash talk in emails when I asked him questions.
He's old school. A lecture based professor. Doing well requires reading the text, books, and attending class. He's flexible with students on deadlines if he sees you deserve it. Participation and attendance matters too. Tests on his lecture and books. Fair grader. B's are easy , A's require effort. Non-native english speakers beware of readings.
Howard-Pitney's online class is great. Well laid out; you always know what's due and when. There are practice quizzes to help study for the tests. 3 multiple choice/essay exams, 10 or so quizzes, a few canned lectures, some discussion posts, and a 1200-word paper. Stay on top of things and you've got an easy B, or work a little harder and get an A
He is a old person but he is easier than other history prof. I realized this after getting done with the class lol. 2 midterms, 1 essay paper, 1 final. Final is 20 mcqs, 15 true or false and 10 definition terms. It cannot get easier. Pay attention on your essays though. And discuss your midterms with him as he makes mistakes, and you can get points
Took this class for G.E units and also because of the good reviews on him. DON'T take this class. He's so boring, especially his lectures. He has major anger issues as well. His powerpoints barely teach you anything, you have to read the textbook yourself. He's too old school. 3 exams and one essay. That's the only easy part about him.
He is an alright teacher. Most of the class is lectures. Graded on 2 tests, 1 final, and 1 essay.
1 essay but you can choose between 2 books, 2 exams, 1 final. If you can I would really recommend you take the ADJUNCT tutoring, it helped me a LOT on the exams. He sang a couple songs that were related to the topics, decent voice. You don't absolutely NEED the textbook but it can be helpful. Don't use phones in class. You can bring your laptop
I was a bit skeptical when I decided to take history online, but I eventually got the gist of it. He does tend to reply a bit late to emails so try to get to him asap if you have a question. The course is filled with quizzes that are fairly easy BUT you HAVE to read the material. About 4 discussion boards, 3 exams, 1 essay Just make sure to keep up
He's a very good professor. You have to listen and take notes on what he says, not just what's written on the PowerPoints. Grades are based on three tests (mostly multiple choice and true/false, plus describing terms) and a paper written on your choice of two shortish biographies. Be prepared to respect his rules, he does sometimes get annoyed.
I took his online class and as long as you did the weekly hw you can get a B, but along with the Exams, there would be essay portions and even though the responses were historically correct, he would still mark you down if you didn't include things he said in his lecture. Plus a book report that I found out about towards the end of the quarter.
Would have gotten an A if he didn't spontaneously change due dates (usually they're Wed/Sun), without letting us know ahead of time... causing my grade to drop significantly. I truly don't have the time to log on EVERY single day. Also, he makes you watch videos of him singing his own songs he wrote about historical events whilst playing a guitar.
Professor Howard-Pitney conducts a fair online class. Everything is as discussed on the syllabus and all the assignments are laid out for you. The entire class requires you to read the text to finish the assignments. Each chapter is accompanied by a quiz and after 4 chapters, there's a test. He has a few video lectures which are entertaining.
He has a very straight forward course which involves all lecture classes followed by 3 tests and one essay. He's a little strict but always fair and more than happy to talk to you if you need help as well as supportive and honest. Class is pretty easy as long as you take notes, pay attention, and use the study guide. All in all a good professor.
Professor Howard-Pitney is a published author and a renowned professor. He is clear in what he wants you to learn and homework that does not take too much time. Get ready to read as it is how to learn history. As long as you read the chapters, do the weekly quizzes and assignments, you will pass with an A. Essays come in exam form and assignments.
Horrible. Tough grader and seemed like he didn't care if his students passed/failed. Easy hw/quizzes you'll find on quizlet but exams/essays and discussions were graded so harsh everything had to be perfect as if you're the historian yourself. He doesn't take late work and he grades like he expects you to know everything, not like ur learning.
His Discussion and Essay parts for his exams are impossible to get good grades on you need to get good grades in all the other assignments and hope it carries your grade. His essay parts in his quizzes are timed but he doesn't even give you enough time to complete them. Focus on all the multiple choice assignments... thats your only hope to pass.
I took Prof. Pitney for Post 1900 American history for my 2021 winter quarter. His class is super straightforward and quite fun actually. His lectures were really well made and entertaining and the homework load each week was a breeze and never changed too much which made things routine. I'd recommend Hist17C if you want a relatively easy A.
I didn't actually read anything. I just took notes on his LECTURE VIDEOS (EXTREMELY HELPFUL) and Crash Course US History videos with the correlating topic to the textbook. Just don't miss any homework assignments. Quizzes are all MC, 3/4 exams w/MC and writing a few paragraphs which can be done with the videos. He grades easy on the exams.
Took this course to satisfy GE req and to not learn a whole lot. Currently a CS senior at uni who does not give a damn about history. All quiz questions were on Quizlet. Ctrl+F is your best friend. Did not touch the textbook at all. Skimmed Life of Frederick Douglass for the final essay. Take notes on lecture videos for short answer exams. Easy af
The quizzes and multiple choice exams and homework are pretty straightforward. However, I find the way he grades the essay portions of the exams and the essay is very harsh. I think he is particulate about what he wants in our writing and expects us to be historians.
I would not recommend this teacher. His perspective is limited by an european male lenses when teaching about race issues. He wrote on the syllabus he would curve the final grade and then last minute did not. He denies the ongoing apartheid happening in Occupied Palestine n racial social discrimination faced by black community during civil rights.
Professor Howard-Pitney's 17C class is well-structured, with a fair online format. Engaging video lectures and quizzes aid learning, though the heavy textbook reading is a challenge. Unstuckstudy is a helpful study tool for this course.
Canvas is very unorganized-some assignments had no instructions so I had to ask for them. The tests are hard due to the material-usually a minute per question. There is a lot of reading and videos of him speaking really slowly-unfortunately no way to speed him up. Class is hard but with the help of generative AI it is totally possible to get a A.
This class is a thinly veiled Race/Culture Antho course. US history from 1900's to modern day encompasses everything from the invention of flight and WW1 to the moon landing and recent history. Yes, American civil rights deserves its coverage in the class, but this is first and foremost a HISTORY class, not a soapbox from which to cry and blame.
Unless you want to waste your time studying for a GE class, use AI. Homework weekly, you answer questions until you meet a quota, and at least one quiz a week. Few other assignments, no instructions. Read a book with no online PDFs, library or buying only options. Final is an essay, and he is a tough grader; he grades like it's an English class.
Professor Howard was a great professor who made you feel cared for and welcomed in the class. As long as you do the work and ask for feedback, you'll do great. I found him flexible on the due dates and other assignments as long as you email him in time asking for help.
