Hard class but you learn a lot. The hardest part is getting up at 8am for his daily quizzes.
Don't miss his lecture.
He's not as tough as he'd have you believe.
don't even think about taking him.. he gives a final and one of the questions is key assignment, but you don't know which one it is. He is from MIT and it's insane to take him, especially for Modeling.. He loves to watch you're failing and suffering..
Not a teacher I would recommend for anyone. Some people get along just fine but he can be degrading and insulting if you question him. Stay under his radar and study the book that he wrote. Dont miss any lectures because you won't get the info anywhere else. Study Laplace transforms before MAE3319. No graphing calculators are allowed in class.
He's a very tough and arrogant professor.I would not recommend to anyone.
He is a nice guy and he knows what he is doing. Unfortunately the class is really hard if you did not take Diff Equ with him. He gives quizes every day at 8am. His test are very hard, but then are easy once he gives the solutions. Most professors curve up, he curves down. Your grade will be based upon how other people do. ex. an A is 95.
Hullender easily loses his patience. This is my only problem with him. During a quiz I called for his help and he came over to see what was the matter. I asked him a question that he deemed elementary, and he proceeded to hank the quiz from my hands and tell me that I was "done". I later got the quiz back and received a 65 on it.
Exceptional professor and knows his material well. Do not ask questions during class because he loses his patience with "simple questions," but he is very helpful outside of class. I recommend putting in the time to study his booklet and truly understand how to do it by yourself. I have learn so much because of how hard he is.
not very cooperative at all. he knows his stuff teaches well but when you try to talk to him, he makes you feel as if you are the most stupid person in this world. class is not that hard though if you study fairly. His daily quiz are a waste of class time because he wastes 30 minutes explaining it after its over. weekly quiz would be a much better
He is one of the best teachers at UTA. Extremely helpful and he won't stop until you get the concepts. He tests on what he has thoroughly explained too.
Dr. Hullender is a great professor. He will go through the basics over and over again just to make sure you get it thoroughly. He is very helpful, one can reach out to him easily. The course is a bit difficult, you have study hard from the beginning. If you want to learn and are ready to work really hard, then take it. U hv to earn your grade.
Would not recommend. Teaches all over the place which makes it hard to follow. He gets very impatient if you ask a question and explains it to you like your an idiot and should have known. Daily quizzes are pointless and just bring your grade down. Grades hard. Answers have to "look" exactly how he wants them to or its wrong even if it's correct.
My class summary for ME 5305. Total enrolled students: 59 Total students dropped class because they got "F" in midterm : 40 He does not curve, even if he says so. My class had topper at 98 and 2nd topper at 71 still he didnt curve. Out of rest 19 only 3 students got A, 10(B&C) and rest D. He bribes giving 100 in hw for submitting review.
Prof. Hullender is the nest professor I've ever had in my professional course life. He teaches everything right from scratch and makes sure that you understand what he wants you to. He's a tough graded though and you definitely gotta read if you wanna get a good grade. Systematic work and proper homework solving ensures at least a B.
One of the best engineering professors I have had. He is very clear and engaging during lecture. I never had an issue with dozing off in class. He is stingy on partial credit, but there is no ambiguity on his quizzes and tests.
Both the best and absolute worst all in one professor. He's a great lecturer, you will learn, but then your grade won't reflect that due to daily quizzes at 8 AM, test questions that are ambiguous (not separated in parts so that you know which work you should show), and very little partial credit (even if you show understanding)
his lectures are very good. but the tests were bit more complicated. you have to think to solve a problem but with limited time it is not possible. the finals were during regular class hour so only had hour and 20 mins to finish but couldn't. he is tough grader. A with him in modeling but i'm about to fail controls.
If you like homework being assigned every-week that hasn't be covered in class, Hullender is you guy. If you like taking a quiz at the beginning of every class about material that will be covered that day, Hullender is your guy. If you enjoy stupid hard tests with no curve, Hullender is once again your guy. Glad I passed and will never take him
Fall 2016. You will have a quiz every lecture about previews material covered in lecture. Exams are cumulative and there is no final. He teaches alright and his book only works with his lectures but the quizzes and the exams are horrible. The questions are so unpredictable and he asks you questions in ways that he never taught how to solve. RUN RUN
I liked his teaching style because he is very clear in explanations; however, no matter how much you think you understand, the quizzes and exams will trip you up because you can never know what he'll put on there. The final would have gone better had he not asked for something on question 1 that would be used throughout, that we were not shown how.
All below is true. Great delivery of material, but pretty terrible 1 on 1 or with questions (stops listening when he thinks he knows what you're asking). Mostly because of how he responds. Daily quizzes still a thing. Pretty good with email. Learn matlab as it's used pretty heavily.
Quizzes almost everyday. All test material and homework can be found in his book. Straightforward. A is easy if you study out of the book which has sample tests.
He gives great lectures that make everything as simple as possible. Problem is he gives alot quizzes over everything (can be topics from the 1st week of class), his homework usually takes about 10 hours a piece and you need to study another 10 hours a week to stand a chance vs his tests. Also he makes his tests as hard as possible so good luck
"This is not a MatLab course" ... these were some of the first words that came out of his mouth, yet every hmwk after hmwk#2 was heavily based on MatLab (even though its not a MatLab course!!) Homework is difficult and he would rather you email him your code than teach the material in a manner that wouldnt warrant you having to email him your code
I'm in the ME 5305 class right now and it's just a month's time before fall semester ends. Dr. Hullender is pretty good in explaining concepts, but his standards are very very high. Tough grader, take him only if you seriously want to study DSM, else don't. Makes me wonder if he is an accurate representation of someone from MIT!!
Takes quiz every class begining, questions will be anywhere from the book, taught or not, so you are clueless whole semester coz hw are also hard. Had 7 subjects in the semester when I had this subject, hardly studied 10 hrs for rest of the 6, had to give almost 20 hrs for this subject alone weekly. 3 exams, all comprehensive anywhere from book.
A quiz will be taken in every class beginning from the topic not covered in the class. He treats as if everyone in the class are Ph.D. professionals with using MATLAB. Worthless class. this one subject equals 10 of the hardest subject ever studied in your life. TAKE HIS CLASS ONLY IF YOU ARE READY TO ACCEPT B OR C AFTER STUDYING REALLY HARD.
There are daily quizzes, but the class isn't as bad as some of the reviews here. Don't expect an easy A, its MECH ENGR. If your goal is to learn a lot, you will love this class. He's been teaching this class for 50 years, so don't dispute that. He knows his stuff, prepares you well for the exams. It's a hardish class, but certainly doable.
Dr. Hullender is a pioneer in his field, his credentials are well known. But he is a tough professor and a lot depends on how naturally smart you are if you want to do well in his course. He's generally impatient with students who don't match to his standards and will cut grades for fun.
The class covers a lot of material but he is very good at lecturing.
There is one sentence enough to plot him. I do not want to compare with other professors. But his class is real excellent at providing thrill of an engineer. He makes you think smart and analyze the real engineering problems. I loved it.
Online he is AWFUL. He is the exact opposite of helpful in his responses. Does not communicate clearly. Would never take again. He does not have a grasp on how students are struggling and does not take that into consideration with his expectations.
TERRIBLE!!! this class is way way harder than I thought he does not do a review before the test he does not answer if you have questions and makes you feel dumb more than anything, hard homeworks and the tests are the same ! Only 1 midterm and the final total 80% of your grade so you have to drop if you dont do good on the first test!
No reviews only two tests giventhe whole semester, very hard to pass he knows the material very well he teaches good but he expects ALOT from students tests are way harder than you think he provides a whole book a week before final and will test you over it on the final , dont take him unless you know the material, or youre not taking many classe
Wish I could give him 0 out of 5 he fails you easily does not matter how hard you try just drop the class if you mess up on one test because no matter how good you do on the second test he will still give you a D or F
If you like to keep your current GPA or you want to raise your GPA DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! he just wants you to fail thats it!
If you're looking for an easy A this is not the class for you. But if you're willing to work extremely hard you'll learn a huge amount of extremely useful material. Hullender knows his stuff and he can explain it very well. Fantastic class, lectures, and professor if your willing to work for it.
buy yourself some antidepressants and brew some coffee, get ready to take the worst class you will ever take. Taking this class is like taking 3 classes at once, no relief in any form, even after the Feb. storm knocked out power for a week, don't expect any help from him
If I had a genie grant me three wishes the first one would be to remove Hullender from the academic field, leave him in the research field where everyone already knows all of the material because that is the only people he can function with
Has a excellent knowledge of the subject matter, but very bad teacher. Doesn't know how to explain things.
Tests over material that is barely covered in lecture, quizzes and homework. Take this class with another professor.
He is not a good teacher. He knows his stuff well enough to make a textbook but he cannot teach at all. He uploaded lectures from a previous semester, taught us the bare minimum and expected us to figure out the rest on our own with no prior knowledge of this material. He even talked about raising the passing grade from 70 to 72. Avoid at all costs
He's too controlling of his course. We were not allowed to seek any guidance other than from him and his book that he made. His book was sub-par. There's no big picture understanding. For example, he went over calculating PSD. In his book, there's literally one line that even describes what it is, the rest was confusing math on its calculation.
Worst professor ever. Do not take him if you want to protect your GPA
No partial credit on HW, we dont get feedback on the tests. He makes everything difficult for no reason, whenever you email him for clarification, you feel him trying to slap you through the email for not understanding.
You get no partial credit, he really makes everything so much harder he is really tough on students and is extremely mean.
This is the worse class I have ever taken. The semester is coming to an end and my experience with Dr. Hullender has been abysmal. He says that he's willing to answer questions and help you but when you reach out to him there is a heavy tone of disrespect and belittling. There are two exams in his class and combined worth 70% of your grade.
Professor Hullender is one of the smartest people Ive seen, however not a great a teacher. He knows his materials but he expect you to know as much as he does. His book can be so confusing. The hardest part about his exams is the time given. Pretty much impossible to finish on time. Doesnt do a lot of application an everything is conceptual
The Professor uses recorded lectures from Cvoid to "teach" and isn't available in person for help, In addition, the in-person class is actually a lab where minimal help can be found.
Hullender is the most specialized and distinguished researcher in UTA regarding simulation of systems. However, his class functions autonomously with monotone, pre-recorded lectures and a small Q&A session. Extremely hard test grading and arrogance while giving feedback show that you will need to work hard for this class.
I have no respect for this guy, because he has no respect for students. I understand a class can be hard, which it is, it's not about that. If I was as rude to my boss as he is to students, I wouldn't have a job longer than a day. Quite atrocious that he can be a professor. If you can at all avoid taking him as a professor, avoid him
If you want to save your time and money avoid this professor at all costs. He uses pre-recorded lecture videos that barely provide any useful information for homework and his textbook is beyond horrendous at explaining the material. I truly believe however that this professor knows the material, but he cannot teach said material. Goodluck
One of the worst professors. Gave homeworks that were "review" for test but were completely unhelpful. If you have to take this course, take it in the fall because it's usually easier in the fall. Study spring semester tests because they are harder than fall tests. He requires you to use his textbook, which is poorly written.
Absolutely abysmal class. From day 1 expect to be confused and from HW 1 expect to have arbitrary and unfair grading. All lectures are prerecorded on canvas and teach poorly. Only 2 exams which are impossible to prepare for because practice exams aren't helpful, homework isn't helpful, and they only give 50 minutes for an hour and 20 minute class.
Unfortch, he is the only available professor for this class until he dies. Him and Wallace "teach" it together, but she doesn't know what's going on. Incredibly difficult class, lectures are online now (prerecorded) and horrifically boring and noninformative. The exams have Q's that students have never seen before. Only 2 exams 70% of the grade.
WORST PROFESSOR EVER. The lecture videos are painfully boring and monotonous. I know people who took this class 3 times and still could not pass. His tests and homework are horribly difficult. His book is not organized at all. I don't know why UTA does not hire someone else to teach this course. Dr. Hullender is a horrible professor.
Dr. Hullender is by fare the worst professor I have ever take in my life. This dudes text book is straight trash and he uses it to show off hiss accomplishments and is narcissistic af. This dude legit told us on quiz & test he didnt go over the material because he wanted us to figure it out. If you can avoid him please do so at all cost.
THE worst engineering professor at UTA, probably anywhere. Gives multiple homeworks a week, has a terrible textbook. Super stuck up guy who is super unhelpful if you have questions. Gave a hard homework he said was review for the test. Everyone spent their studying time trying to finish it. Not a single topic from that homework was on the test.
Essentially an online class with recorded lectures. The only "in-person" class is once a week which is basically a Q&A with a different instructor who is learning the material along with the students, and the TA's who do know the information. Wouldn't be that bad if taught in person as the professor is VERY knowledgeable in this field.
Professor Hullender is a smart man but he makes MAE3360 significantly more difficult than it has to be. The textbook (written by him) is okay, but the last quarter of the course makes nearly no sense at all. The class is very exam-heavy that are graded very harshly (forcing drops) and are given little time to complete. Would not recommend.
Hullender is terrible at writing exams. It's as if he is trying to fail as many people as possible, and then at the end of the semester he curves the overall grade. My grade after the final exam was in the 50's, and I ended up with a B. Just keep up with the lectures, quizzes, and homework, and hope that you pass after he curves.
Hey guys, just wanted to say that I took Hullender a few years ago and am now in industry and can now say for certain that whatever you guys are learning in 3360, 3319, etc. are completely irrelevant. The methods he tries to push and says that engineers use is false and you will in no way see the methods in his textbooks ever again. best of luck!
Professor Hullender is a smart man, but he is a horrible lecturer. Many times I would leave the lecture with more questions than what I came in with. This class was very hard compared to the other sections with different professors. Also beware that he wrote the book used in this class. Only sometimes would it help. Take other professors.
Has a half in person half video lecture schedule. Willing to answer questions until you understand the topic. Every exam is comprehensive, but the content builds on itself, so the older topic questions are free points. Grades on a distribution. Keep up with the work and you should be fine.
Any positive review that is left is a review left by David A. Hullender himself. Great researcher, horrible professor. "Quiz's are based on previous lectures!!" quizzes are never based on previous lectures..
I dropped out of MAE and UTA because of Dr.Hullender. Truthfully, his age is getting to him as he forgets the simplest of things. He put his whole life into his 2 books because he couldn't make it in industry. Yet, has not one to continue his perceived legacy because its outdated. Times have changed since the 50's, Took my college money elsewhere.
Imagine being over 21 and having mandatory attendence for a class that you yourself pay for.I am 28 and he still treats me and my fellow classmates as we're children. The kind of person that makes you still raise your hand or ask for permission to go to the bathroom.I am switching to another university to take Systems as he is a horrific instructor
Why is this man still teaching, failed at industry and takes his pain out on undergraduates. He is a very very smart man and knows what he is talking about, but his emotional quotient is significantly below average. Someone who cannot communicate effectively with students should not be an educator.
Dr. Hullender makes reviews on here himself. Sometimes he is too lazy to rewrite something and just copies what he wrote before. Notice for yourself.
Has "supplemental prerecorded lectures" before every lecture that is approximately an hour and a half and basically forces you to watch because if you don't, you will fail the course because he covers no material in class, but forces you to attend so he can give you a quiz over the "supplemental lecture". Dr. Hullender I KNOW you are reading this.
Gives a Exams over content made up by him and doesn't cover it. He can't do simple Newtonian physics so he uses his own made up methods. After which he berates and yells at students.
There is no one in the MAE department as disliked as David Hullender. Truly a marvel that he still teaches. Needs to retire, too old schooled. Walked in slightly late to a quiz and was scolded and refused to finish it.
The class has a group chat of 35 of the 50 students with us all discussing how horrible of a professor he is. Extremely condescending, acts high a mighty and just gives an attitude to everyone that he interacts with.
Everyone failed the latest exam and he spent the whole class period insulting everyone and insinuating we all had some sort of mental disability
Dropped this class. Refuses to tell us exam grade average because he believes that every single person should compare themselves to the very top score, so if you have a savant in your class you better perform relative to him.
Avoid if you can. It will make your life easier.
Three words. Unprofessional, unlikable, aggressive.
Just as a warning for anyone, do not take any class with him if you can. If you've never taken 3360/3319 with him the exams will be extremely tough, he puts material covered from those classes the way he taught it when he should be testing over material he covered in the class he's currently teaching. Expects you to know more than what he teaches.
Please avoid him at all costs, if his name appears on your schedule, expect pain, grief and sorrow as you watch your grade in cavas go into a straight free fall after the first exam.
Very difficult exams. Does not reveal the class average, because he thinks everyone should be compared to the highest grade. Most of the people I know failed the first exam. However, he still did not curve it because there was just 1 person who got a 100.
Do NOT trust the "past exams" he gives you. The exams in class are much longer and much harder. He WILL include concepts you haven't been taught yet. He will assume you've been taught things in other classes that you haven't. I'm not sure if the "past exams" are even real. I did 3 of the past exams on my own with no problem, but failed the real one
Absolutely the worst professor you could have. All he did for our 3324 class was talk about a deck of cards that could do all the differential equations. Besides that he is all over the place with his lectures and does not care to answer any of the classes questions. If you have the option to avoid this professor I highly recommend you do so.
On the 10th week of the semester, and every time someone answers a lecture question, he says, "Well, yes, but that is not what I am looking for." He gives a quiz at the start of every in-person lecture. Poor time management in lectures (spends an hour giving quiz answers).
If you have to take analysis with him, take it another semester if you can. He is quite literally the worst professor I've ever had. He simply is incapable of teaching effectively and is a detriment to every student in the class for about 16 reasons that are too long to list here. I feel I've learned nothing but to avoid hullender at all costs.
The professor doesn't know how to make more than half of the class understand. I find his method of teaching very unhelpful.
Avoid avoid avoid.
Quizzes at the beginning of every class, usually over what he plans to give a lecture on after the quiz. Not clear about expectations regarding homework submission formats. Lectures are very sporadic and seemingly unplanned. Replaces one lecture a week with an online one that doesn't thoroughly explain anything. Nice guy, but not good at teaching.
He was great in my experience, he had an entire textbook on the canvas page full of previous tests and their solutions as well as previous homework and quizzes. I recommend working the previous tests before your exams and you should do fine.
