He is very easy going and if you don't understand something he will take the time to help you. He does not keep the students the entire class time. He gives you assignments and if you finish them, then you can leave early. I was very pleased with him.

my god a film class at bcc! take it, not only is it a gimme (pick your own grade), he shows very very good films.
He has changed since Comm 1. He used to be really easy but hes gotten ahrder. He's still really funny and a good teacher but assigns a lot of work now. He assigned a 10-12 pages reserach paper with 2 weeks left of class. And he assigned other work!
Easy class, but you have to be "deep" and understand the stories...
Awesome teacher... really knows his stuff
Great teacher with a great understanding of literature. He made me actually interested in analyzinc short stories. I got more out of his class than just an A. He was fun, interesting and therefore the class was not hard.
Very informative, excellent!!!
this dude is cool as hell, if u are looking for an elective take this class, it shows some great film and he is also a cool a$$ teacher. Also u pick ur own grade.
Awesome class, awesome professor. He did a great job. Easy grade. He showed good movies, and it was a good chance to open your mind a little to films you might not have seen otherwise. Really passionate and informed about the subject. I recommend him.
He was a great teacher. He went in depth to explain the themes of the literature he was trying to point out. The research paper in his class was the only paper I have ever written that I enjoyed doing so. Very funny and down to earth.
Great teacher, very enthusiastic about his subject and very willing to explain things in as many different ways to get his message across. He assigned a term paper that was quite long, but he was there to help as much as you wanted him to. He was extremely helpful. I would reccomend him!
Awesome class, assignments are fun and short. Lots of group work. Stories are mostly good. I'll take him for film too.
great, great, great, great teacher. Defiantly take this one
By far one of the best com professors, he knows his stuff inside and out.. and he makes class very interesting... took him in the summer and loved it all
dude, i could've taught this class better than him. seriously needs to research material before he teaches it.
This by far is the greatest Com II teacher, very energetic and fun. Not boring at all, the assignments are easy. The class is pretty much based on the research paper. But get if you can nobody else.
This is the BEST professor that BCC has to offer. The BEST! He is funny, interesting, practical and approachable. He does what he can to make sure you don't suffer as far as your grade goes, and is obviously into what he teaches. Film, is a great elective. Highly recommended. You'll never regret taking this class with him. Sign up now!
AWESOME! Aside from Dr. Stein,Johannson has been my favorite prof. Might seem a little gruff at first, but he is really great! I'd recommend him for sure!
I love the idea of a film class but unless you like the same type of movies as him, you will dread attending this class. I can't stand a single one of the films we have watched and they are all what he likes so it is all the same genre. I still learned a lot but it's my least favorite class.
He is obviosly an "intellectual" type of guy. Comes off a slightl arrogant, but you WILL learn form hi...and he knows what he's talking about. He basically knows he's cool.
The beginning of this course has a lot of reading in it when it should be spread through the course. Thats my only complaint though. It was a good course but there is some work to it. The movies are pretty good if you give them a chance, they're all mostly from the 70s and 80s
I had Professor Johansson for Film, and Communications. He has truly inspired me to push forward in life, and has taught me valuable life lessons. His classes are somewhat easy; however most people miss the opportunity he gives you to excel in writing, and in life. He’s an amazing professor, and I can’t thank him enough.
Wonderful teacher!
Professor Johansson was great. I really enjoyed his class, he made it interesting and fun. He knows his staff! and he knows it too. Great teacher, I would take him again!
You know that one teacher that you'll always remember? The one that you really admired and were inspired by? This is mine. I entered his Film Class with only a casual interest, concerned that it would be a washy, waste-of-time excuse to watch films. Turned out to be a brilliant course that has really made an impact on me and my future.
Awesome class. Brilliant Teacher.
This teacher is awesome. Very helpful and has great insight to some of the best films I've ever seen. He shows a lot of foreign films but if you don't like subtitled movies, you will after seeing these. Great class. I would recommend it to anyone.
Teacher is intelligent and if you have questions explains them. I'm not good with older literature but he explains it well. He gives ample time to do homework. Good teacher.
Awesome teacher. Makes it so interesting and totally loves and knows his stuff. I had him for Comm2 and Film and LOVED both classes. Easy to get a good grade and learn at the same time too! :)
If you don't take his class your missing out.
If you don't take this teacher, you are missing out on the best education for communications 2 class. He is funny, open minded and expressive, which makes this class easy to take. Assignments are easy and usually can be completed in class(exp.papers/reading).
Great teacher, always shows up to class with a genuine interest that the students are getting as much as possible. He loves the subjust and wants to share this love, which makes the class enjoyable. He does make you work, though, but you learn through the work. Highly recommended.
LOVED this teacher. He made this class so interesting when I don't particularly like literature classes. I definitely liked this literature class. He is very real with his students and truly loves what he does. He assigns good stories to read with good lessons in them. If you try your best he will notice. I highly recommend!!!!
Prof. Johannson is awesome! He's very fun and tells good jokes. I liked coming to his class. It was pretty easy. DON'T PROCRASTINATE!! One paper that's 8-12 pages but he breaks it down so it's not so intimidating. I highly recommend him.
Pros: Great! loves what he does,entertain/intelligent/funGrades fairly. Shows geniune care for students & their futures. Many short classes; responds quickly to emails. Best pro: real CUTIE! Cons: took while to get grades back, hard to know where you stood. Quizzes wouldn?t happen after studying-could be pro! Read his book! ?Skin of Sunset?
This is the most inspirational english teacher i have ever come across. He was so enlightful and really brought out the best in me. I write much more "detailed" than i used to. i dont think there's a negative thing anyone could say about mr.johansson.
GREAT TEACHER! kept the class interesting, kind of fun while you learn. if you have any problems with any of the assignments his door is always open. if you do your homework, participate in class, and study the words assigned you will do great in this class. the only bad thing about his class is memorizing sonnet 18.
Fantastic teacher! If you complete your assignments and pay attention in class you will do well. If you do have problems go see him, as he has great patience. The only bad thing about his class is SONNET 18, which must be memorized before you leave his class.
Overall, I thought he was a great professor. The material was not too hard, so long as you do the work required. I liked the short-story analyzing section of the class.
I had several "epiphanies" due to his imaginary through his lectures. He allowed us to have our own "point-of-view" even if it was a complete oxymoron to his own perspective. You will learn the word juxtaposition. Check your hubris at the door and you will be able to carpe diem. To state it simply you will enjoy his class.
This man will go to all lengths to make sure you pass his class. Does a lot of worksheets in the beginning, but once you start your research paper, he makes sure you have the time to get it done. Great guy and his classes are NEVER boring. His test are simple as long as you study the material.
Great teacher. As long as you complete all the reading assignments and answer the assigned questions you will do fine. There is a big research paper at the end. He explains it step by step and gives you a packet that is extremely helpful.
This professor holds a true passion for what he teaches. From English to Film, He provides a successful approach for his students in not only college, but life as well. Johansson is a wonderful asset of BCC.
This teacher is the best. Will go into depth with the literature work. Must take professor!
At first I thought this professor was a little full of himself, but as the class went on I liked him more and more. There's a lot of assignments, but they aren't difficult. Whenever I got a paper back he'd have comments on things that I wrote that he liked. It was refreshing for a professor to tell you that you were actually doing something right.
Prof. Johansson is Awesome!
I had him for film. He was extremely helpful, passionate about his course, and very engaging. As long as you show up, do your highlights, and listen, you are golden! He isn't too bad on the eyes either and he is really funny :)
Took him for Com 2. He starts out easy then LOADS you with work at the last couple months, including a research paper which he barely explains how to do. Do not take him unless you are skilled at looking "deep" into literature.
Really enjoyed the class. Great teacher.
Mr. Johansson is an awesome teacher, had him for film, showed interesting films but is very passionate about his work and makes this a fun class to take.
The man knows his stuff. Professor Johannson is a real jewel. Count yourself fortunate to have access to such a mind.
If he were to give you directions you would never get lost, and you would arrive at least five minutes early. His legend precedes him the way lightning precedes thunder.People hang on his every word, even the prepositions. Indeed, he is the most interesting professor in the world. Stay in college my friends.
You learn alot in this class and it just flows very easily. The teacher is very passionate about the material and it makes a huge difference. There are writing assignments during the year but you start out in groups and progress to working independently. Great choice for ENC 1102. You will have a great term.
I am Kate Rose and I enjoyed Prof. Johansson's class very much.I cultivated a deep respect for him. He is an honorable, intelligent, and dedicated Educator. You will have fun learning in this class, and gain a valuable life skill. THANK YOU PROF. JOHANSSON! You absolutely ROCK!!
I forgot to add in my previous entry that Prof. Johansson's novel " Skin of Sunset" is the kind of read that you cannot put down once you begin. I read the whole novel in 3 days. Read and learn, my friends!!!
Best Comm teacher you could take. Makes lectures interesting. Textbook is mandatory. Put some effort in to your papers and you should have no problem getting an A. Unfortunately, he does not rock the goatee anymore.
Well basically I saw the class as a review since it was basic writing about short stories and such. The one thing I did not like was the 10-15 research paper on a book. I thought 6-8 would have been appropriate enough. Doesn't post grades up on Angel though which kind of irritated me (but he'll post his assignments on there). Overall pretty good.
Best professor I've had by far!! Knows what he's teaching and how to explain it. Makes class interesting, highly recommended!! Wrote a great book too!
Was a fun teacher to have. Helpful with all assignments, but was a rather laid back teacher overall. Doesn't give busy work. Attend class and pay attention and this class will be an easy A
I can genuinely say this is my favorite professor I have ever had. He is incredibly smart, honorable, and funny. I would take his class 3 times over again. He sincerely cares about your learning experience, your future, and he teaches things that matter, not simply what is in the book. I've recommended him to all of my friends.
He is great, very smart, and is pretty funny!! Best teacher Ive had all year, looked forward to going to his classes. Only had to write 2 papers, and he does not load you up with crazy amount of h.w.TAKE HIM FOR COMM 2!!
Very nice guy. There is quite a bit of homework and reading during the first half of the semester, but don't let it discourage you! He grades essays fairly. Don't procrastinate on the final paper!
Best teacher I have ever had. Though I had to quit half way through the semester, I still use what he taught me daily. I recommend this class to anyone who has to take ENC1102. Yea, you're going to have to work hard and read a lot of short stories and answer questions on them, but that's preparation for the real world... so sack up. Best Prof Ever
He has such a passion for literature. At the begining there are alot of short stories you have to read and then answer questions about them. The midterm is just know the terms and giving an example. Then the next meeting you have to write about what you have learned! Last half is for a lengthy paper, but he made it easy to reach the limit.
Took him for comm 2, LOVED HIS CLASS! the lectures were always very interesting, and the work isn't hard at all! One final research paper that is a bit lengthy due for the final, but his class is hard to fail. loved loved loved his lectures and the way he taught!
TAKE HIM! The first half of the semester consists of reading short stories and answering questions for hw, mostly just quoting the text and giving your opinion. The midterm is short answer vocab words, and as long as you put something, you get it right. The second half of the semester is put aside to finish the one and only research paper. EASY!
Good class. In a way he taught good life lessons. He also discussed with us about colleges and your future. I recommend him! Read short stories and answered some questions, and then at the end a research paper!
His class is about 80% handwriting practice. He has some good advice and perspectives but he is stubborn about his own opinions.
He's a great professor because he is passionate about what he does. His lectures were always interesting and insightful. I know many people say this, but he is honestly the best professor I've had.
First semester was reading short stories and then answering questions on them. Most of the stories were very interesting. Second semester we worked on our big paper. It wasn't bad at all. He was a great teacher because you could tell he wanted to help us succeed and be our best. If you take his class you wont regret it!
Best Professor hands down! He really knows his stuff and is passionate about teaching. He has a great sense of humor but is also professional. I'm taking another one of his classes next because he just that good!!
Did minimal work in both Film 1 and Film 2 and got A's both times. Study for the 2 tests that you'll have each semester and you'll do fine. Do at least half of the work also just to be on the safe side. Really gained a appreciation of film from the movies in this class
Fantastic teacher. His teaching style is very easy to follow. He will not bore you. You read a bit first semester and write short responses. Second semester you are focused on an 8 page research paper, but don't worry, he helps you A LOT along the way! Take him! He's so passionate and intelligent!
Film Appreciation One is the first in a series of three classes. There is so much to be learned about film. The prof.'s knowledge of it is top-notch; his intelligence is evident when he lectures (and his snide asides are very funny). I am a cineaste, and I watch film in a smarter way AFTER taking this class. It is worthwhile. I'd say, take it!
Johansson opened my eyes to the communication field. I took his Comm 2 class and finally found a direction to go with my major. Without his class I'd probably still be aimlessly seeking a general AA with no real idea of what type of BA degree to seek in the future. He is an excellent teacher and I look forward to being in his upcoming film classes.
He's a good teacher. He's an easy A if you put the effort into the class. I learned a lot after taking him. My whole perspective on movies has changed because of what he has taught. All in all, he's a good teacher and I would definitely take him again!
He has very annoying assignments that cause you to feel highly uncomfortable. He rarely stays the entire class time. And his assignments are are erratic.
This teacher will be there if you need him to be. Amazing lectures.
He is awesome. All of his lectures leave you thinking about life. He's inspirational and a funny guy. He doesn't really give you a grade throughout the semester though, we have many small assignments and in class participation points but he never records them on canvas. So you wont know your grade until the end. He also lets you out early
Eye opening and educational. He's funny and down to earth. Exhilarating lectures. I really enjoyed the class and the knowledge gained. Must be willing to learn with an open heart, mind and soul. Outstanding professor!
Johansson is AMAZING! Yeah, he teaches you Comp 2, he teaches the material and makes you read and write about it, but he makes you feel like it's IMPORTANT and it makes you want to do better. He teaches you about life and is real. I would DEFINITELY recommend any class he teaches.
I LOVED this guy!! He was so funny, and the things he would have us read were really interesting. He was nice, and opened my mind to a lot of things. I really enjoyed this class, and him. If you're signing up for classes, TAKE HIM! Seriously! The best teacher I will ever have. Just don't use your phone often, he will call you out about it.
One of the best teachers I've ever had. Class is full of life lessons. Never Boring. 2 papers; easy A. Really opens up your mind. I actually looked forward to going to class. You may not know your grade for most of the semester, but just do your work and you'll be fine. Very fun and comfortable environment to be in. Highly recommend. Have fun!
Professor Johansson is very engaging and he's extremely passionate about all things literature. You won't know your grade until the semester's over, and he doesn't post the assignments on the syllabus, which was frustrating for me but it might not bother others. Fairly easy class with lots of reading but minimal writing.
Overall, he is a great professor! Very funny and passionate about what he teaches. Encourages his students to go out and expand themselves. He is a little disorganized when it comes to homework, but that's the only complaint I have. I'd suggest him to everyone!
I had him for both Com 2 and Film Appreciation in the same semester and I highly recommend that you take him. He assigns a fair amount of homework and he teaches with a passion, because he wants to teach you what most teachers can't. He's open to any questions and he is very friendly. Sign up for him and you may really learn something worthwhile!
He had us do a lot of writing. Very abstract test format, not just multiple choice questions. Really makes you think about what you're writing and read very deeply into the meaning of each piece of literature. He's super cool and funny.
Very easy class that focuses almost entirely on you learning and understanding. Almost everything that is graded just revolves around your opinion on a topic, or making examples of what you learned where you get an A so long as it isn't off topic. Very few tests, very easy class, more importantly it's a great class that teaches much more than most.
He is a very interesting teacher. His lectures are interesting and they will not bore you. He only assigns two papers the whole semester but the last paper is a research paper 8-14 pages long. He doesn't post grades on canvas, which is really annoying. You wouldn't know your grade till the end of the semester. He's not very helpful.
Most of the assignments were based on your opinion and you got a A for doing them. I actually looked forward to going to this class because he made it really interesting as much as I hate literature. He was funny and taught a lot of life lessons that I will keep with me. Not many tests. 2 papers, one was 8-14 research paper at the end but he helps.
Suuuper funny teacher and not boring to listen to. He doesn't post grades until the very end of the semester but as long as you keep up with his assignments and do your 8-14 page research paper, you'll end up with an A or B
Cool professor. Highly recommend. Shows unique films that you may or may not like. Only work really is chapter highlights, which are pretty easy. Most days you just watch movies though.
Was great to be in his Film class. He shows some unique films that my friend and I happened to love. Not a lot of homework except for chapter highlights which are easy to keep up with and not too much work. Doesn't post grades until the end of the year, but gave great lectures and tests are easy if you study!
Mr Johansson was a breeze and his class was actually quite entertaining! I recommend this course to anybody who wants to be entertained and learn a little about literature. Usually has a few assigned reading assignments, a couple of tests (all test criteria is on a template on canvas) , and one major research paper to complete the course. 8-14pages
Johansson is probably the best professor I've ever a had. Hes hilarious, but he's also very knowledgeable. Very little work to do, but i still feel I learned a lot and would recommend you drop any other professor if you can take him.
Johansson was one of the best teachers I've had at EFSC because he tries to develop his students character and mindset rather than just curriculum. A bunch of things he said in class still run through my head. The class itself is easy. You read short stories and answer questions. And a research project. But honestly, 100% recommend taking him!
I really enjoyed this professor's class. He kind of has the charismatic personality of a cult leader, but I mean that in the most flattering way possible. BEWARE THOUGH IF YOU DON'T LIKE WRITING DON'T TAKE HIS CLASS. I personally love to write, but even so I lowkey had a mental breakdown over the final paper we had to right that was a big one.
Film is an easy A. He shows a lot of foreign films and most were really interesting. The only homework is chapter highlights. The tests are easy but is a lot of memorization. He makes you write out the answers in brief paragraphs. My only complaint is that he does not post any grades until the end of the semester.
Awesome teacher 10/10.. He loves using the textbook and he's super laid back about turning things in late. Easiest teacher i've had and I learned a lot from this class. TAKE HIM!!!!
Professor Johansson is an amazing teacher! He really cares about his students and makes his lectures fun and enthusiastic! He is hilarious and his homework/ tests are not too difficult. Put in the effort and you will receive an A. He is by far my favorite teacher I have had at EFSC!
Brillant Professor. Learned so much, and got an easy A!
*****5 Stars!! 10/10!!! ((**)) If you are attending efsc for an undergraduate degree and you don't take as many of Johansson classes as possible you will be doing yourself a great disservice. A really cool professor who will increase any interest you have for literature at the same time pass on some valuable life lessons.
Johansson was such an inspiring man. Every time I left his class, I felt changed. He really makes you think about your life, and encourages you to become something more than a "pizza hut manager". His 8-14 page paper at the end of the course kinda stinks.. But he gives you over a month to do it, and the take-away from his class is just amazing.
His class was something i looked forward to every day. You not only read amazing literature, but you hear amazing stories and life lessons too. This was by far the most interesting class i have ever taken and would highly recommend you take it too.
By far the best class I have taken in my college career so far. He is so inspirational. The lectures he gives us are so interesting and leaves us wanting to know more. I highly highly highly recommend taking this class. You will not regret it!!!
Love,Blood,Sex,Death,Money. You will hear this every single class meeting no matter if you have him for Com 2 or Film 1 and 2, I've taken David Johansson 3 times now because he is an amazing teacher and has amazing life lessons, hands down the smartest and best professor at efsc, you're missing out in a lot if you don't take this teacher!
Best Professor at EFSC. Tests and quizzes are stupid easy. Basically just common sense. His lectures are really engaging and he's really funny. The things he talked about felt important and he overall seemed to enjoy what he was doing. HIGHLY recommend. It's an easy A, but you learn a lot as well!
Professor Johansson always made class interesting. I wish i took him for COM1 but his class was more than just an English class. He gave a few small papers and one long paper at the end of the year, gives plenty of time to work on it. Get ready to talk in class because participation definitely matters. HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS CLASS!
I guess from this site I expected him to be more passionate about the class but it all seems so routine for him. I mean, granted, he's been probably teaching the same stories for years now. He is funny though and does share wisdom. Easy class. His pride just annoys me at times.
Many students will love him because he is very easy going and does not really grade anything. I personally enjoy writing and more importantly, critique and feedback which he does not give. I also busted my butt on the HW only to find out people were getting A's regardless of completing the HW or not which kinda bummed me out. Show up and pass class
He's a cool guy and all, but everytime he talks it's like he's doing a stand-up comedy routine. I've heard him tell the same jokes in the exact same way a bunch, including audience interactions, so I can only imagine he's using the same jokes in other classes. Also, the class is so chill that it's easy to forget that you have to do work.
He is probably the first English teacher I've had that keeps my attention throughout the class. Hes a really good grader and makes class interesting.
Love, blood, sex, death, & money ;) He felt more like a philosophy professor rather than an English one (which I loved); he had an interesting way of writing on the board before/during lectures. His lectures are entertaining. Critiques: He didn't post grades on Canvas, and had to work in groups sometimes. Sad COVID-19 switched it to online...
Today was the last day and I was actually sad leaving his class because I really had fun! I had a lot of film knowledge before taking class, but I still learned so much. We watched the film Tree of Life and David's lectures around that film were amazing. The only thing I will say is that when we got assignments back he never really gave feedback.
Interesting guy, basic class. The papers were relative to our futures, and it was clear that he wanted us to gain something useful from his class. Only issue I had was that I took the class to improve my writing, but never got graded/reviewed on any of my work beyond the main paper. I also never got my final test graded. Easy A, not educational.
He is a very easy going and his papers are about the future of the student. 10/10
A professor that truly loves to teach. He gives extremely good advice for college and life in general, makes the class very easy, and always has hilarious lectures. He's a very laid back professor who's class is basically impossible to fail. Would recommend to quite literally anyone taking ENC 1102.
Professor Johansson is easily one of the best professors at EFSC. His lectures on film are amazing and hilarious and give advice for life as well. Loves his job! He talks fast so take notes. Film clips were awesome, you learn A LOT! Homework is sparse and easy, just make sure you do it. I'm sad to leave his class. Take him, you won't regret it.
Professor Johansson is certainly a interesting character. This is the first class I've had with him, he reads everything you submit & offers feedback. Majority of the English classes I've taken have been extremely structured in terms of writing, he really pushes me to think outside of a box. Ultimately helping students find their voices.
He was extremely rude, waited until the last week to grade almost everything, wrote an essay about a joke my friend made calling her and the rest of our generation damaged, and gave us busywork every week so that he could leave class after ten minutes. The final paper was also 3500 words with ten sources, a lot of work for a three-credit class.
Professor Johansson is amazing and obviously cares about the future of his students. The class is pretty easy and lectures are really fun. Honestly, if you didn't end with an A in the class, then you just didn't turn stuff in.
Johansson gave us a few stories to read at the beginning of the semester. It can be a bit boring but if you try and answer the questions, you'll do fine. He didn't grade most of the assignments he gave us, including the final research paper and exams. I would say this is a pretty easy class as long as you turn in your work.
Professor Johansson is definitely a character, but also hilarious. Even though it was a film class, I still learned very useful and interesting life advice from him. The only thing I was not a fan of is the way he does assignments, as he doesn't grade anything until the end of the course, but I believe he grades on participation most of the time.
Johansson will usually give you 1 assignment a week that is easy and short. During class, he will lecture and then turn on a movie. The midterm and final were closed-book, but he gives you the answers to them. He doesn't always have the clearest grading criteria when it comes to assignments though. Attendance is important in this class!
Some of the instructions for assignments were very vague and unclear. He was a slow grader and slow to respond to my emails. Nice guy, though.
He is unclear with every assignment and refuses to give simple directions. He does not provide feedback on work even when asked. DO NOT TAKE
Loved his Class, consists of him lecturing and then turning on a movie. Assignments were given once a week and were very easy to complete. Loved the films he selected since they all had different meanings, loved his work overall, super nice person and very easy to talk to, If your interested in film class I would definitely recommend taking.
Prof. Johansson's class is pretty easy if you stay engaged. The lectures are fun and he offers great advice. Unstuck AI helped me prep for exams when he didn't grade assignments. Overall, a solid choice for ENC1102.
