Absolutely loving Johnson. His passion for economics shows in every lecture.
Amazing speaker, not much homework, expectations for tests laid out specifically for you so there's no surprise! By far my favorite professor of the semester!
Very interesting and knowledgable. Very smart man that keeps you engaged.
Awesome professor. His lectures are great. They are interesting and are often related to current events. One of the smartest men I have every met. Take class if you can even if it is not necessary for your degree. It will definitely change your perspective on a lot of things, especially political view. He gives both sides of every argument.
Professor Johnson is by far the best professor I've ever had! He breaks down all the ideas on textbook and explains them in a way that you can easily understand. Not much homework! And he encourages you to go to his office hour and talk about your problems. Super caring about students! Overall if you can sign up for his econ class then do it asap!
THIS IS MY FAVORITE PROFESSOR OF THE SEMESTER. HE WAS PASSIONATE ABOUT WHAT HE TEACHES, AND GIVES YOU MANY OPPORTUNITIES TO SEEK EXTRA HELP. IF YOU NEED TO TAKE ECON, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND HIM!
Johnson is an awesome professor. He is very educated in Economics, and you can tell that he really cares for his students. He is always available in office hours and they are super helpful. Definitely take this class with Johnson, you wont regret it.
Very very passionate and wants to help.
Honestly one of the best professors I've ever had. The man is an absolute riot to listen to in lecture and is extremely passionate about his profession. He constantly gives you relevant examples to connect the material and his test are very straight forward. While the material may be difficult, he genuinely wants his students to learn it well.
Johnson is easily the best professor I've had. He's willing to help with anything and truly wants you to succeed even beyond just his own subject. If you do the reading attendance won't necessarily be mandatory to passing, but I highly recommend you go to lectures because this guy is amazing.
Johnson is an awesome professor and truly cares about his students. He is always willing to help and will never make you feel stupid for not knowing how to do anything, in fact he encourages all kinds of questions. He has a passion for teaching and although I am not a huge fan of economics, he was a great professor and I highly recommend him.
Prof. Johnson is very energetic and engaging! I had lecture at 8:25 am and I was always awake because of him. I thought the class was easy and I would recommend it to anyone looking to get a basic understanding of economics. Lectures are not required but I was disappointed if I missed one. He gives about 20 problems/week so it's not a lot of work.
David Johnson is the GOAT! This guy knows how to teach. He taught at Harvard alongside the Mankiw (the author of the best Micro textbook). His passion for teaching is expressed during lecture. Sit in the front. You will be captivated. Also, his practice exams are harder than the actual exams. Soft hearts, hard heads.
He is awesome! Lectures are very entertaining and always started with a current events section to show the students why this stuff actually matters in the real world. Has a great sense of humor and really connects with the students in class, which is not easy to do in a 350 person lecture.
I throughly enjoyed taking Econ 101 with Johnson. He's super funny, and he is incredibly, I mean INCREDIBLY passionate about the subject and it shows. I would totally take this class again, and I highly recommend it.
He's the best! I wasn't too interested in economics as a subject but he made it very tolerable. I didn't read the book much because his lectures are much more clear and informational. Tests were tough but he curves those, curves your final grade, and offers extra credit at the end of the semester. Loved his passion and his humor, would recommend!!!
Dude is a straight up stud when it comes to economics. He knows the material extremely well and his lectures make a topic (econ) that is usually boring, pretty interesting. Always cracks jokes during lecture and relates economics to real world events. Tough concepts to learn, but I would retake this class in a heartbeat if I had the chance.
Absolutely amazing lecturer. Taken econ 101 with him, you wont regret it. He taught at Harvard for more than 10 years and knows what he is talking about. However, his handwriting does get messy at times and I wish he either used power points, or had his lectures recorded or put online.
David Johnson is one of my favorite teachers of all time. He was always very energetic and fun during the class. He is a very smart guy and is very helpful in his office hours. If you are taking Econ, make sure you get him as a teacher. It is a difficult class, but definitely worth it.
Best professor I've ever seen
great professor! !
Great professor. Best I've ever had. He really cares about what he's teaching and is very enthusiastic. 10/10 would recommend!
Great guy, very funny and engaging, just make sure you read the textbook or else lectures are very confusing.
Read the other reviews. Johnson is the best professor here.
Johnson is an energetic guy who is passionate about economics. While he makes lectures interesting and incorporates real world concepts, he does not spend enough time with the basics of economics, making it quite confusing to fully understand what is covered in lecture. Johnson can be unclear, so spend ample time practicing/reading outside of class
On the first day I thought it would be a long semester but after a week or two he became my favorite professor. He cares about economics and I enjoyed economics with him.
Absolutely amazing professor. If you take Econ101 take it with him. Econ is tough, but he could not make it any clearer. He's an amazing lecturer and his lectures make everything come together. He's really intelligent and has a lot of insight to offer. The class isn't a joke, but has plenty of curves that help out a ton. So glad I got this guy.
Didn't need to take the class for my major, probably wouldn't have chosen to take it, if I could do the semester over but Professor Johnson was amazing! He sits down with students and talk about everything from current issues to how to study. Classes are basically where all the information comes across so you must go to class but class is very fun!
If you aren't a liberal, you won't love his half-hour political rants at the beginning of class. Besides that, he is a pretty good professor who is very passionate about his job. The pace of the course might be a bit fast for someone with no economics experience. Problem sets are difficult, but tests are easy after going through review materials.
Professor Johnson is a really great teacher and person. He is always willing to help you and set up individual office hours. He is a great guy that makes class interesting and tries to make econ as clear as possible.
Professor Johnson is the absolute GOAT. I have never had a better professor in my life. I had an 8:25 with him, and although the time was difficult, he always brought his full effort to class every time. I would go to his office hours often with any questions and he would help me through anything. I would recommend his office hours. Take his Econ.
tests are hard, make sure you study regularly. fantastic lecturer. extremely passionate, funny, explains the content very well. definitely attend lecture or youll fall behind easily. read the textbook because you need it to succeed. great teacher, hard class. three tests and weekly problem sets. great person to talk to.
Johnson is an engaging teacher, especially considering he teaches a introductory course power lecture (the actual subject matter is pretty bland). Lectures are not difficult to skip once in a while to be successful in the class. He gives two midterms and one final; some of these tests seemed hard but the curve was so huge that I did extremely well.
Professer Johnson is an amazing economics teacher. He is extremely engaging and makes the topics interesting. I would absolutely recommend taking any class that professor Johnson teaches.
I went into this class not even knowing the basics of supply and demand, and came out of it with an AB and wanting to major in Econ. Don't get me wrong, you have to put in the day to day and synthesize all the topics over the semester, but he's an amazing professor and very helpful. Very passionate. Definitely take this class!
David Johnson is a must take for Econ 101. He truly cares about your learning and wants you to succeed, while keeping lectures interesting at the same time. You don't need to read at all because his lectures are so good. I went to every lecture and didn't read at all, and got an A on every exam. Do the homework.
David Johnson is a good professor and is hilarious. He is also fair with grading, econ 101 was really hard therefore there was a fair curve. The downside to having him as a professor was he was very loud in lecture, pratically shouting. Also be prepared to do A LOT of studying, its not an easy A class by any means
Excellence all around. He was very available in office hours for any questions and would clearly explain the material. If you don't ask him questions, he'll just tell funny stories about his daughter(s). Sometimes he'll randomly yell in lecture, which is funny. He knows what he is talking about. I also showed up to half the lectures and got an A.
David Johnson is the best professor I've ever had, he is so passionate about the material and he truly cares about the success of his students. I had no interested in Econ before this class and now I'm majoring in it! He's extremely articulate and intelligent and the power lectures flew by.
DWJ is the man! Whether or not you like Econ, he will make your life awesome. The tests are multiple voice with some short answer and are curved very generously, and there's problem set homework every week that keeps you on top of things. He's so exciting and he's like the smartest dude I've ever met.
Despite being a sometimes boring topic, Professor Johnson made it into an excellent time. It was the first time ever that I didn't dread waking up for my 8:25 class. Johnson shows a deep amount of care for his students and is beyond passionate in what he teaches. Overall the class was difficult, but I wouldn't have wanted any other professor.
DWJ is a fabulous professor! His lectures are very exciting and entertaining. But, get ready to do work. The exams are not easy, but if you put in time and do the problem sets and practice tests, you will see a payoff. Really recommend taking his course, he is the best lecturer I have had at UW.
Passionate teacher.
Very knowledgable of the information he's presenting. Great lecturer.
I am taking another class solely because he is the professor.
As an upperclassman, I don't understand the love for DWJ. His lectures are average and don't really translate to the expectations for exams. Exams are tough and he'll incorporate multiple concepts into one and really make you synthesize the problem. I am not pursuing econ, but I do feel the rigor of the course will prepare you for further courses.
This guy is great. I had him for his first semester here at Madison. He is so entertaining in lecture. There's no way you could fall asleep because he excitedly yells his whole lecture. Don't know how he doesn't have laryngitis. Grading of tests are weird. With curves I thought I had an A. He says no it depends how many students get As.
David is an amazing professor. He is very energetic and lectures were very enjoyable compared to my other classes. I had never taken an economics class before but he really sparked my interest in econ, and I'm looking forward to taking econ 102. Tests are hard but they are fair and are a good assessment of what you learned in the class.
Awesome professor, you can learn a lot besides economics. Very energetic and interesting. Though I go an AB but i will still take his class.
Professor Johnson is hands-down the best professor I have had. He is clearly passionate about economics and he provides examples relevant to real life during his lectures. I highly recommend him for Econ 101.
Best professor in Economics! Each lecture is as interesting as watching one's favorite movie. His exams are kinda tough because we don't practice problems in lectures but if you solve the practice materials available to you and go to office hours, you will do well. I never got above 80 in any of my exams but ended up getting an A overall.
Great professor.
Professor Johnson is an amazing lecturer and truly cares about how his students view economics. His passion was evident even during the 8:25 am lecture, which made them all the more bearable. The tests are relatively straightforward, although they count for a large portion of your grade. Overall, one of my best professors.
David Johnson was the greatest professor I have ever had. I hate math and all things that coincide with it, so I was dreading econ. Johnson made lectures interesting and truly made me care about his course. He wants every single student to do well and shows it by constantly being available to his students and willing to help as much as it takes.
One of the best and most entertaining professors I've had. He really tries to make Econ interesting and relatable by starting off each lecture with a current news story and then explaining how it connects to the curriculum. He's very passionate and funny, and will definitely keep you awake in class. Don't miss a single lecture.
Awesome professor, even better guy. I highly suggest going to his office hours.
I am not a morning person in any way and had him at 8:25-his spunk and sense of humor is the only thing that got me up in the morning. Would definitely suggest going to as many lectures as possible; I missed probably 5 or 6 lectures but as long as I kept up with where we were in the book I was fine. Attending all discussions helped my great out.
Professor Johnson is SO funny and really great. I took the online class during the summer, and the lectures were from the spring classes. He makes the topics interesting when they are hard to digest. Make sure to do practice problems to prepare for the tests. The homework reinforces what is learned from the book and lectures.
Johnson is the most caring professor I've had. He has four sets of office hours a week and makes himself beyond available. His enthusiasm for economics is insane, and I was never bored during lecture even though I had MW at 8:25 am. His tests are hard, but he is a generous curver. Problem sets are tedious but helpful.
He's funny and fun to listen to. Keep up with weekly homework and you'll do fine.
Prof. Johnson was one of the best professors I have ever had. He is hilarious and very accessible outside of lecture. Econ 101 is challenging, but taking it with Johnson softens the blow
THE GOAT, DWJ is a true gem when it comes to professors. I took his class my freshman year and made me fall in love with economics. You are going to have really work in his class if you want to do well. His exams are not easy, but have decent curves. The best professor that I have had throughout college and wish I could have him again.
One of the best professors I've ever had. Econ is hard, but he softens the blow. The 8:25 lecture is rough, but he makes it enjoyable, always cracking jokes and keeping the class lively, so it's worth waking up for. Tests are hard, but he's very accessible outside of class (4 days of office hours) and always willing to help. Take him for econ 101!
Professor Johnson is hands down my favorite professor thus far at Wisconsin. The man is clearly passionate about his job, and he does an incredible job of relating the class to the "real world". Definitely worth waking up for in the mornings!
DJ is far and away the best lecturer I've had thus far at UW. He makes going to 8:25 lecture worth it, as his passion for teaching and economics is evident throughout lecture. He challenges you to think outside of the box about economics and connect it to the real world. While I'll never major in economics, I'd take a class taught by DJ any day.
David Johnson is my favorite professor I have ever had. You can tell he loves his job. He literally screams half of the lecture at you, but it's because he is so passionate about teaching students. (And because of the gallon of coffee he drinks) I think he is hilarious, and totally worth taking, even if his class is at 8am. Best class ever.
If you're on the fence, take his class. He's awesome.
Professor Johnson is by far the most passionate professor I have had here at Madison. He keeps his lectures interesting with some fantastic humor, current news topics and personal anecdotes that he relates to economic concepts. Moreover when I had him he offered a whopping 6 hours of office hours a week making him very accessible. 10/10
Professor DWJ has overall hilarious classes however, He does not explain things very clearly because he speaks super fast and his notes on the blackboard are basically nightmare, getting too messy to clarify which is which. He is indeed a great professor but I won't take his class again.
LITERALLY THE BEST ECON 101 PROFESSOR YOU WOULD HAVE FOR THIS SCHOOL!!! A respected, hilarious and caring professor who will broaden your horizon and provide you tons of useful economy knowledge. Curves are pretty generous. It is my favorite for my first semester in college.
Hands down greatest econ professor of all time. He tried to make himself available almost all the time so if you have any questions, you could always email him. Also, he tried extremely hard to connect the theories learned in class to the real world. If you wanna take economics, take it with DWJ.
First semester in college and he was hands down my favorite. Econ 101 is not an easy class but he is available for help a lot. Super engaging and smart, the way he talks makes you understand things from all perspectives. A lot of people will end up taking this class and if you do I highly recommend him.
It's no cakewalk of a class, but it's definitely worth it. It's challenging material that he teaches at a high level, although this shouldn't be too intimidating because he holds 4 sets of office hours a week. He's a tremendous lecturer, and I highly recommend his class. Bravo, Professor Johnson.
If you aren't able to handle to lecture only, this is not the class. My discussion wasn't very useful. The homework is a lot of taking concepts and then making them real life applications so if you have a hard time with that, this class is going to be hard.
I had never left a rating for a professor until having this guy made it necessary in my mind. My favorite professor I've had. Definitely encouraged me to take a deeper interest in economics. I never imagined an 8:25 could be so worth it. Tests are tastefully difficult, as long as you properly study you'll be fine and he curves anyway. Easy 5/5
This was my first real large college Lecture class. I transferred as a Junior from a 2 year college. Lectures are long, boring and useless. No powerpoints just DWJ writing graphs Nothing he taught was in the exams except for the mandaotory problem sets. Hard class and exams. Gots around 60% on the exams and 100% on PS. Very generous curver got C.
Best economics professor I have ever had. Made class interesting and was always available for office hours. Really cares about his students, this semester when my professor didn't show up for office hours Professor Johnson helped me with the material on his own time. Put in the work, and you will get a good grade. He is always available to help.
Best professor I've had. This is a more difficult class mainly because the final is 40% OF YOUR GRADE. If you do the homework and actively participate you'll do fine. Prof. Johnson actually made me look forward to an hour and a half lecture at 8 in the morning.
He is the best professor you will probably ever have. He is always available and super helpful during office hours; don't be afraid to go a lot. Discussions are mandatory.
This was my second class with DWJ and he's still amazing. Hilarious, effective, and really cares about teaching. You'll learn a lot from this guy if you pay attention, and you'll get a good appreciation for the material. The book is helpful, but you can definitely get an A by just showing up and listening to what he has to say.
Very well educated guy, used to teach at harvard. Cares about the environment. Knows his stuff super well. Can yell at 8:50 in the morning because 5+ cups of coffee probably
Great professor, has been teaching introductory economics for years at prestigious institutions like Harvard and Duke yet is still very passionate about the topic.
David Johnson is one of the best teachers I have ever had. His lectures are invigorating and hilarious, and he is very clear in what he teaches. He has multiple sets of office hours that he can help you with, and the book he provides is very easy to read and understand. I wish I could take another class with him.
Johnson is by far one of the most inspirational teachers I've met. His lectures are early but he's hilarious. I got to know him pretty well through office hours and they're usually very helpful. He's taught at a lot of prestigious colleges and knows what he's talking about. He'll also schedule one on one meetings if you can't make office hours.
I enjoyed his Econ class enough, but he was overrated and it started to show. He runs around the lecture hall and it is funny at first but then it becomes a bit too much for an early morning lecture. Overall, I did well in the class but it was not anything special.
DWJ seems like he would be a nice guy to talk to outside of class. But in class, he spent far too much time talking about current events and Janet Yellen, and not enough time actually teaching the class. I would get to the homework and have never seen the concepts before.
Johnson is the best professor I've had so far. He keeps the lectures interesting and invigorating, his passion for the subject is evident and inspiring. The material is difficult, but if you go to class and do the work you should be fine. If you are struggling he is very willing to meet outside of class to help.
Awesome professor, makes lecture interesting by using real world application. Has tons of office hours and is very approachable, witty, hilarious. One thing I hated about the class was that average midterm scores were around 60% which is his usual. He curved that mean to a B, but I wish he just made the exams more doable and analogous to the course
David Johnson is hands down one of the best professors at UW. He is super energetic about what he does and Economics, and has numerous office hours. He is hilarious and makes Econ an enjoyable class, even if taken just for a requirement. The material is tough, but his curves are almost overly generous. HIGHLY recommended.
hes awesome
Excellent professor who makes what can be a dry subject at 8am, extremely interesting and relevant in the real world. Not the easiest class and depends heavily on exams but its doable and he is very accessible. Brilliant guy in general too, used to teach at Harvard before he moved here.
Favorite professor I've had on campus. Definitely makes class worth going to at 8am which really isn't that bad. He made me decide to become an Econ major and he really makes things easy to understand. Isn't easy, but if you apply yourself, it isn't hard.
It's an 8am class and he does wake the students up by being loud when he teaches. However, I think he goes over topics too fast. Reading the book will help a lot. Exam has both MC and problems you would see in discussion. Discussion is a great way to attend because TA's review the general topic and notes for this week and you get extra 1-2 points.
Simply brilliant. You're missing out if you can't take a class with DWJ during your time at UW. He is very captivating in lecture and provides the most helpful feedback in office hours. This is my second course with him and I wish I could take more. Absolutely wonderful, well informed, hilariously witty, loud, outgoing, personable. Best professor.
Very inspirational professor, he got me interested in econ as an engineering major. Johnson gave some of the most whole-hearted lectures I've ever seen. Grading was very fair and attending his office hours/reviews puts you in a great position to succeed. Best professor I've ever had - he makes the material real and important.
David Johnson is a great personality and watching him lecture was honestly a pleasure. That being said if you don't read up on the material *prior* to attending lecture you'll likely be lost most of the time. Purchasing the textbook is essential. Weekly assignments are best suited for group work.
This professor is so passionate and very engaging. He relates concepts to real-world situations which makes them easier to understand. The course workload is a good amount. I would suggest reading the book because it reinforces concepts. The exams are very fair and reflect the course material. You have the resources to do well in this class.
Johnson has been by far my favorite professor so far, I went into this class as a Bio major forced to take this class by my parents who have MBAs. And I came out of this class an Econ major and with a new found love of Econ bc of Johnson. His lectures are engaging&he is very accessible&his exams are hard but fair. Take his class you will learn alot
Truly, a professor who has reached his equilibrium. While tests are hard, he gives ample coursework beforehand with similar test questions to help you prepare. He also curves the tests so don't panic if you think you got a 60/100 because that could be a B. Also the best lecturer I have had so far, even at 8 am he kept me interested.
David Johnson is hands down the best professor I have ever had and it was great that I had him freshman because he confirmed my passion for economics. His real life examples and applications of theory are truly riveting and kept me wide awake at 8:25 in the morning. Tests are hard but make you think so make sure you understand concepts really well.
Professor Johnson is hands down one of the best professors I've ever had. Economics is a hard subject to learn, but he made it a lot more bearable. His lectures were clear and the textbook really supplemented the material in lecture. Find a friend to do the problem sets with, study the problem sets for the test, and go to the review sessions.
It's pretty clear this is the professor to take for econ 101. Makes 8am lectures more bearable. Exams are fair based on what was practiced in class. I never liked econ and he made this class enjoyable.
David Johnson takes Econ 101 to an unexpected level. He will challenge your assumptions and change the way you view the world. You will laugh, cry, and learn like never before.
Best Professor I have had in my entire schooling experience. Kept students engaged for the entire power lecture and made economics interesting and applicable to the real world
This man is the best thing that has happened to University of Wisconsin Economics for the last decade at least. He is inspiring, brilliant, willing to help, challenging, and extremely personable. I learned more in his 301 class than any class I've ever taken. He should teach 301, 302 and an advanced elective, I'd take them all.
Amazing lecture! Professor is very enthusiastic!
Awesome teacher. Really funny, knows his stuff but is not snobby about it. Makes the course about you and not himself. Talks a lot and can give overly roundabout answers to questions in office hours but other than that is close to a flawless person. Type of person who's so smart you want to listen to anything he says. Go out of your way to take him
Econ 101 is probably the hardest course I have ever taken. Though I never know what is going on in lecture, I can tell that Professor Johnson is incredibly smart and a master of his subject. He wants his students to be successful and I appreciate that.
David Johnson is an incredible man. His lectures are just as informative as they are hilarious. I am so glad I had him because I hate econ, and I don't think I could've made it through without him yelling about elasticity at 8:25 twice a week.
Johnson actually makes lectures worth going to. Reading the book is pretty important, as well as doing the practice problem sets.
Professor Johnson is amazing. He is down to earth and really cares about all of his students. Will never give you an answer to a problem, but rather talk you through it until you figure it out yourself. He is also hilarious and has the most entertaining lectures I have ever experienced
By far the best Prof Ive had, such a great and knowledgeable guy.
Best professor I've ever had. Absolutely fantastic in every way. Makes lectures and class very interesting, but you have to read and pay attention during lectures. Exam questions are often rehashed questions from the problem sets, so as long as you study you're set. He jokes around during lecture a lot, but also instills a lot of uncommon knowledge
Professor Johnson is by far my favorite professor. This main is truly amazing, he brings economics to life. I came in a political science major, but now a double in polisci and economics. The material can be challenging, but he offers 4 sets of 1.5 hr office hrs per week. I attended about 2 a week just to talk to him about economics in the world
Don't take this class in the morning if you aren't a morning person. He is very loud. It is clear he's very passionate about the subject which was nice though. He talks really fast though so be prepared to scramble to get notes down.
David is a real gem. He is a great teacher and an even better person. He genuinely wants you to succeed and will help you along the way. 10/10 wish he was my father.
Best professor I've ever had!
Amazing and thorough professor, I have never been so entertained at 8:25 in the morning. You will not regret taking this course, 11/10 would recommend
Professor Johnson is an awesome guy, probably the best professor I will ever have. He is incredibly passionate about economics and he is a great lecturer, would recommend him 100%.
Hands down my favorite professor so far at UW-Madison. His energy is INCREDIBLE in class and he makes the material and lecture so interesting. Made me want to come to class and to his office hours! He does a lot of additional things for his students and is very easy to contact. He understands the material and knows how to teach it the best for us.
I took this class because I wanted to satisfy my QRb requirement without having a math/science heavy course, but I feel as though this class would have been easier had we usen math instead of how Johnson taught it. He's really energetic, but it gets sickening after about a week. Doesn't explain the material well. A lot harder than i expected.
This guy is the GOAT. He's a good instructor, he knows a lot about economics, and he's hilarious. Talking to him during office hours is highly insightful. Take econ 101 with David Johnson if you can, even if it isn't needed for your major, he's that good. The end of econ 101 might be a little rough if you're unfamiliar with basic economics, though.
David Johnson is an amazing professor that has so much passion for what he does. He is probably the best professor I'll have, and his lectures are informative yet interesting
Simply the best. Incredibly passionate, energetic, inspirational, smart, organized, engaging, etc. Tests are tough but fair. Not taking his class is a disservice to yourself, everyone on campus should take Econ 101 with DWJ.
He is probably the best teacher I've ever had in my 18-year life. BEST EVER! If you have a chance to take his class, plz do.
Super engaging professor! Tough class overall, if this is outside of your major I would recommend going to extra review sessions and office hours. TAs often explain what Johnson fails to in lecture.
Incredible and inspiring guy, he had me really enjoying my time in this class and made me feel like all the time I put into it was worth it. Do whatever you need to do to take him, not doing so would be a huge mistake. His passion for the subject shines through in every lecture and that was what truly made this class for me. Thank you David!
Professor Johnson is the love of my life. His 101 class it THE best class I've ever taken in my entire life, and he is the reason that I am an economics major. i think about this man everyday of my life. Best class ever, best lecturer I've ever had the pleasure of enjoying. Do whatever you can to get David Johnson as your professor.
I have never had a more knowledgeable professor and I feel so fortunate that I was able to take his class. He's funny, engaging, and makes sure you apply what he's teaching through his problem sets. He offers many office hours and often emails if he feels like a topic needs to be clarified further. His tests can be difficult though.
Johnson is probs the best teacher I've ever had. He is super passionate about the subject and really cares about his students. He makes Econ101 super interesting and relates everything to real-life examples. He is so insanely hilarious--and not in the way where he tries too hard to relate to his students.
Listen to all the other reviews. He is an amazing professor, making 8:25am lectures worth it. Most people I know didn't use the textbook, but I HIGHLY recommend it. Take it from someone who got an A on every exam & in the class. It helps clarify unclear topics. Problem sets are VERY helpful for exam practice, and his practice tests help A LOT.
"Today we're doing monopolies. What does mono mean? 'It means it should've kissed my girlfriend.' THAT'S NOT WHAT MONO MEANS!" 10/10 great professor
Johnson actually had a sense of humor, and there was no problem hearing him during lecture. However, he had a lot of notes so lectures sometimes dragged on, but overall he was very organized and clear. If you do the problem sets and practice exams, then you should be fine.
He's really funny during lecture and knows a lot about econ. He really cares and wants each student to learn as much as they can. The curve he uses is extremely generous so its nice. The only thing is to make sure you keep up with the material and actually do the homework so you understand what is going on in time for the tests.
You're wasting your money at UW if you need to take eco 101 and aren't with Johnson. Absolutely incredible lecturer and a truly informative class.
Johnson is the guy over Kelly. Class was still hard though. You only were graded on section attendance and exams. Slides aren't posted so go to lecture. Although I would never take econ 101 again, Johnson was a good guy.
Best prof I've ever had (writing this as senior). This man is so witty and entertaining to listen to I'd attend this class without being enrolled. As far as the class goes, yes it's hard. You must go to lectures and actually listen and take notes. But Johnson gives you all of the tools to get an A: practice tests, textbook, supplemental notes
A very funny guy with more enthusiasm than I have ever seen. A great intro teacher, and would definitely take him over the other 101 professors.
Johnson is hilarious and really dedicated and passionate. Definitely take econ with Johnson over any other prof!
Econ 101 is a class that you need to take time for. I thought that I could just not pay attention and learn it all before the midterm like in high school but the midterms are very difficult even if you pay attention. The problem sets are not too bad just make sure to do them. There is a major curve at the end which saved me but do not count on it.
Fantastic and engaging lectures. Extremely helpful in office hours and a genuinely interesting person to talk to. The way Johnson teaches Econ 101 opens up your eyes to the world around you and will make you feel like you're truly learning. Also a great liberal arts elective for freshman engineers.
He is an amazing lecturer. I hate numbers, but he made incredibly engaging and loved every lecture. If you go to class, you'll pass, no problem.
A very vocal lecturer and it can be a little much at points. Going to lecture AND discussion are vital and his exams were very difficult. It may be a 100 level class but it is not easy.
David Johnson made 8:25 an lecture worth waking up for. His lectures are interesting, informative, and very relevant to questions on tests and problem sets. He had more office hours per week than any other professor Ive ever had. His class is a must take.
David Johnson is a very good professor! His lectures are very clear and he is really enthusiastic about what he is teaching. However he makes you work to get an A. Probably would take another class with him.
This man will be the best professor you will ever have. If you have to take Econ 101 and don't take it with Johnson, get a refund on your tuition. Lectures are captivating regardless of how early they are. Tests are fair and he provides an abundance of materials to prepare for them. He also had 8 hours of office hours a week.
Johnson is a very caring professor and really tries to explain things to students. However, this was one of the hardest classes I've taken and I really had to work hard for my AB. The problem sets are long and tough and so are the exams. He is extremely available for office hours and really tries to help. It comes to whether you get micro or not.
Prof. Johnson is pretty much universally liked. I had him for both intermediate micro and sports econ, and I thought he did a great job of keeping people engaged in both classes. His exams/problem sets are not the easiest, but he cares about his students and offers a TON of office hours. I definitely recommend taking a class with him!
Probably the best professor i have ever had. Makes concepts very easy and logical. gives importance to concepts rather than values.
Johnson was the best professor I have has thus far. He is caring and wants his students to succeed. He has office hours everyday of the week, which are very helpful. His lectures are never boring even at 8 am. I woke up early for this class and I would do it again a thousand times. The problem sets are hard, but the test are curved a lot
Literally one of the best professors at the university. Econ 101 was the only class i never skipped a lecture. He manages to keep your attention throughout a power lecture while clearly conveying all the course material. Ridiculously intelligent guy. The MOST accessible professor ever, he holds office hours almost every day.
David Johnson is hands down the best professor at this university. He is incredibly hilarious and gives students all the tools that they need to synthesize and understand concepts in the course. 301 isn't easy, but he helps guide you through a hard class. Super available outside class, and fair exams. I wish I could take him for every Econ class.
Best teacher I've had. Smartest person I know.
I'm now planning on double majoring because I liked his econ class so much. Probably the most entertaining lecturer I've ever seen, and always stresses the importance of what we're learning in current events.
Obviously very passionate and wants it to be valuable to everyone. He is the best professor I have had so far. Constantly wired on caffeine and screams most of the lecture but still explains the material very clearly. The only thing I wasn't really a fan of was how the discussion sections were run (too much material not enough time to understand).
He's the best instructor ever. He really learn and to fully synthesize everything you've learned. Don't go to his class if you dont want to learn but only want a good grade. Otherwise, he is more than willing to help when you have questions and have a ton of office hours.
The best economics professor at UW. Johnson is such an absolute gem it's literally insane. This man is the reason I am double majoring with Economics. He has more office hours than literally any other professor, and is very easy to reach outside of class. He is so willing to help and is an amazing lecturer. Beware missing lecture!
I only took this class as a prerequisite but it ended up being one of my all time favorite classes so far. Professor Johnson is probably the most dedicated professor I have had. He has tons of office hours and there are no stupid questions. Do the homework/study material he gives you and go to office hours if you have trouble and you can't fail.
David is one of those teachers that really want to help a student outside of class. He makes office hours very comfortable. There is a problem set each week ( Due on Friday at 6;00 and the new one is accessible at the same time). His exams are very similar to the practice exams that he gives out so make sure to study those! I would highly recomend)
David Johnson is genuinely one of the best professors out there. He is so knowledgeable about econ and truly cares about his students. He has more office hours than literally and is very accessible outside of class. He really wants his students to do well. Lectures are a must, but he makes topics interesting so you will want to go anyways.
This man is the reason I decided to double major in economics. He is so intelligent and really cares about his students. The class is difficult for a 101 course but Johnson is so worth it. He's hilarious and makes topics interesting and applicable. He has a ton of office hours and really wants his students to do well and understand the material.
A fantastic lecturer that made the class much easier to learn. Microeconomics is an extremely tough course, but if you go to lectures and ask questions during office hours, then you start to understand the material. Using the textbook along with lecture notes is a great way to understand the material. Tests are very difficult, so expect to study.
Professor Johnson might be the best professor I've had at Madison. His lectures are incredibly energetic. You won't get bored. He has office hours 4 days a week. They are very helpful. 301 is the hardest course in the economics department, but Professor Johnson gives you every opportunity to be successful. Put in the work and you'll be fine.
Mr. Johnson possibly is the one instructor that has changed my life the most during my freshman year. He is one of the most passionate professors at Madison, and he really knows his material and tries to make it fun for his students. By no means is the class a cruiser, but do the problem sets with a friend and go to lecture, and you'll be golden.
Great lecturer as well as very kind outside of class. Hard work is necessary... the final curve is outstanding
Lectures are all over the place and I got really sick of him screaming mid sentence. He is a generous grader with a big curve so he is highly overrated. Still the best option for 101. Doesnt do research so tons of office hours available. Gets distracted during office hours. Not a hard class at all. Business majors struggle with this class.
David Johnson is one of the funniest people I have ever known, but lectures are sometimes difficult to follow because he is a conceptual teacher, so the actual problems that you do for homework are challenging. There are very generous curves on the exams and the class as a whole. However, if you struggle with Econ, this "intro" class will be hard.
David Johnson is awesome! He always keeps his lectures interesting and fun. The tests could be challenging but the review materials were extremely helpful. There is also extra credit opportunity and the tests are all curved. I would highly recommend Professor Johnson to anyone taking Econ.
Johnson is the GOAT!! He's super energetic and even if he is sometimes all over the place, he gives you every tool you need to pass his class. Put in some effort, go over problem sets, and do practice exams, and the midterms are not that hard. Lectures are pretty much mandatory, but very engaging. TAKE ECON WITH JOHNSON, YOU WON'T REGRET IT!
Goes significantly more in-depth than the textbook! Tends to ramble on into extremely difficult content in lectures and does not have powerpoints.
Definitely should take for ECON101 when possible. Everybody wants to major in Econ after having him as a professor.
He is the reason I wanted to become an econ major. I never actually did and stuck with engineering but he made ECON 101 my most enjoyable class of freshman year.
Genuinely would recommend Prof. Johnson to everyone I know!! Even when the class gets a little difficult, he makes sure you're learning WHY what you're learning is important. He really keeps you awake even at 8 AM by running up and down the aisles screaming the concepts at you. He convinced me to major in Econ!
Johnson is my favorite professor I've had at UW so far. He managed to keep me awake at 8 in a morning and is very helpful in his office hours.
This man is an ABSOLUTE GEM. He takes economics (micro and macro) and turns it into a relevant and engaging subject. Seriously, get him as a professor if you can. You won't regret it. His lectures are legendary and he does an amazing job making sure the concepts are interesting to learn about. He cares about education, and it's clear.
David's lectures are hilarious but don't always cover the materials that make it to exams. Pay attention in section and to the textbook and practice with examples with numbers and figures to stay ahead. Overall great professor; hilarious and super fun to listen to. Power lectures feel short.
ECON 102 NOT 101..I'm very confused what everyone likes about this guy. He reads the newspaper for the first 30 minutes (minimum) of class, and never tests on it. He only writes on the board during lectures (very difficult to read), and he discusses extremely broad topics and expects you to be able to apply them in the most arbitrary ways possible.
Solid prof for Econ 101. He is VERY accessible outside of class holding office hours for 1h 30min Mon-Thurs. Problem set every week (except midterm weeks). 80% of final grade is from exams (for all econ 101 profs) . His lectures help build the material in the book, but reading the textbook is mandatory. He doesn't use canvas which can be annoying
Johnson began every lecture (15min) with current economic events, which I enjoyed. His lecture material can be hard to follow if you haven't read the book (hard to keep up with, dense chapters and assigned 2-4 a week). Went to his office hours, but he often just asked yes/no questions and acted like I understood. A good TA is crucial to do well.
Prof. Johnson is the perfect guy for Econ 101. He is engaging and makes power lectures fly by. He cares about your education and is motivated to make his students better global citizens by teaching to not just memorize, but really look at their application and our world to supplement our learning. Amazing class with real-world applications.
Amazing lectures, and actually cares about his students. Very clear about his grading and what is expected. Homework is due on Fridays basically every Friday night and you get to drop 2 of them which is nice. He is the best professor I've had at Madison super available and helpful during office hours so go. Also read the textbooks it's helpful.
Extremely accessible professor who truly cares about the content he's teaching. Definitely not an easy A but the effort you put in is definitely what you get out. Great guy and professor.
Prof Johnson is probably the best lecturer I've ever had. He breaks concepts down in a way that's easy to understand, and every once in a while he throws in a tongue-in-cheek comment that cracks me up. I took his econ 101 summer course online, an I ended up spending about 10-15 hours a week on it. Would definitely recommend the class and the prof
I took his online course this summer while I was traveling, and I couldn't have had a better experience. The lectures were very engaging and useful, and worked well with the textbook reading. The tests can be difficult if you don't put a decent amount of work into it, but its a doable A. There's also a bit of extra credit available.
Prof. Johnson is so awesome. He is so loud and funny and really makes it hard to sleep through an 8am lecture. The problem sets were hard for me but if you work with a group you can get them done pretty quickly. The tests have questions that are very similar to the problem sets so nothing is unexpected. Great professor, would take again.
Best prof I've ever had. If you have the chance to take one of his classes definitely do it. Tests can be hard but if you do the homework you won't have a problem. Take advantage of office hours
He knows what he's teaching and clears doubts well.
He's the best!!!! Very motivating, clear, caring, intuitive teacher. Best teacher ever had
Easily the best prof I've had. His enthusiasm makes it really easy to pay attention during lecture. Taking macro solely to have him for another class.
Literally the best lecturer I have ever had. I don't even care about economics I just keep taking it because I wanted to have him as a professor again. These classes have nothing to do with my major. That being said, if you want to put in minimal effort, this isn't the prof for you. The way he structures his class kinda forces you to learn.
David Johnson integrates current events into his lectures for constant synthesis, he is founded on the principles of economics and tries to apply these concepts to reality
DWJ is one of the best profs that I have had at UW. Exams had a generous curve and lectures were interesting.
One of the best (and most challenging) professors I have ever had. His exams are tough but his lectures are fast paced, interesting and relevant. Going to his office hours and review sessions was super helpful.
I understand that everyone loves this man. I am so happy for so many of you that do. Johnson's teaching style works for most, but not all. Johnson wants economics to be "intuitive", he wants to teach so that you can figure the rest out on your own. If, however, econ does not come intuitively, you will be very, very lost.
One of a kind teacher. So passionate about econ very engaging and does amazing lectures. So far my favorite professor at Madison.
His lectures really pull you in and make you want to listen. There were times I woke up for my 8:25 AM lecture and thought about going back to sleep but decided to go just to hear his lectures. He is really knowledgable and passionate about the course and gives it in laymans terms. He doesnt like to use a lot of jargon and makes topics simple.
Johnson is the GOAT
Best economics professor at UW-Madison
Johnson is truly an incredible professor and clearly wants students to do well in his class. His teaching is a lot more theory-synthesis-based so you don't need to be particularly good at math, yet logic will help a lot. He is kind of a crackhead in lecture but it helps in grasping the information. Text is the base for problem sets but is not bad.
Johnson is a great lecturer and his random SCREAMING will surely keep you awake at 8:25 AM, but his class structure isn't that great for someone with no economic background. I learned most of the material through the Mankiw text and my TA, as his lecture is very fast paced and hard to follow. Overall, not an easy dive into economics, but doable.
Johnson is a dynamic lecturer and also excellent at explaining concepts clearly. I looked forward to his lectures, even at 8am and even when class transitioned online (covid-19). His discussions of current events helped make the sometimes-dry course material feel more relevant. Workload is decent but you'll have everything you'll need to do well.
Having taken 2 economics courses at UW and talking to other students, Johnson is the only prof. you want to take Econ101 & 102 with. It's a super tough class, especially if you have no history or future in economics (but it's a requirement), but Johnson makes it doable. Go to lectures, take advantage of office hours, and you'll pass.
David Johnson is the best Econ professor, and maybe the best professor at UW-Madison, by far. He makes 8am classes super fun and is always very energetic. He loves his work and makes you feel like you belong.
Funniest professor ever, would highly recommend taking him if you're going to be studying econ, he makes even boring topics interesting.
Professor Johnson is a beast, the lecture videos were great, and his office hours were both engaging, and insightful. The class was extremely difficult, however the curve for this class was absolutely insane. I did not score above a 50% on any of the exams, but I finished the class with a BC/B-.
Don't take Econ 101 with anyone other than David Johnson
Best economics professor at the entire university. Take any class you can with Johnson!
Like others say, he is a great prof. With that said, when we went online (March 2020) his lectures became 30+ mins longer, sometimes a whole extra hour. Maybe he has changed that. I also hated how the final was 40% of the grade. Luckily it was open book due to the online shift. Otherwise I wouldn't have survived.
David Johnson was my FAVORITE professor this previous semester. He is extremely energetic, engaging, and explains everything well. He is the sole reason why I changed my major to economics, for I fell in love with the concepts that he was so passionate about teaching. He is extremely knowledgable and assures you understand content. HIGHLY recommend
Johnson's energy will definitely keep you awake during lectures. His exams are hard, but don't worry too much because he always offers a generous curve. Take him at least once at UW, you won't regret it.
Professor Johnson's lectures are amazing, and he makes the material so much easier to understand than previous Econ classes I've taken in high school. Very engaging, but there's quite a bit of reading and practice problems and the tests are hard.
Very animated, which I found a bit excessive at times, but also very passionate about what he does. Tough exams, but generous curves. Also offered a mock final worth up to 5% extra credit.
Very interesting lectures and Johnson makes the material easy to understand! The exams are hard, but there is a good curve that helped a lot. The class is difficult, but getting an A is doable.
Professor Johnson is amazing! He's funny and so passionate about econ. He also offered 4 sets of office hours every week on BBC, which were extremely helpful. The exams are hard, but there's a nice curve. You definitely have to put in a lot of time and effort if you don't have a background in econ, but he made the class manageable and interesting.
Conflicted. Most difficult class I've taken. Love him as a person, & his lectures are interesting/highly caffeinated! Great emphasis on concepts, but not being math-brained, I never got the world problem-style exams. The curve's huge, so I got a BC with 61%. Still put in the most work for my lowest grade. 101 might be a hard course with any prof.
he is by far my favorite professor, he has fun lectures and knows what he is talking about. He responds quickly to emails. However his lectures are long and his exams are tough.
Very energetic lectures. You can tell that he wants his students to succeed, and he tries really hard to make the content interesting and applicable to the real world. The content itself (coming from a non-econ major) is very boring and confusing. The curve is the only reason I got a good grades in the class.
He is a very nice and generous guy, definitely wants his students to succeed. However his teaching style is just awful. He rambles on and on, on a chalk board with random notes, it is not structured in anyway. And his tests don't have much to do with the textbook. The only way to do well is to already know a lot about economics.
king.
Prof Johnson was super energetic. His lectures were fine but class was super hard. You do not need to go to lecture because he post the lectures online, but if you want to get a good grade you will have to watch the lectures, read the book, do the non-mandatory problems that go with the book, study notes, etc. Super time consuming
Honestly one of the best professors ever listen in lecture and you will ace the class
Use lecture videos on Canvas (sleep in). Do the review materials for both midterms. Take notes in class/online(canvas). Draw lots of graphs. Study w/ others to check problem set answers b4 submitting on Cengage (website w/ textbook). Make a word doc w/ table of contents of all chapters, so you can ctrl+f b/c open book midterms. USE OFFICE HOURS!
yasssss queen you go girl
dude is a legend lol. hes very good at making somewhat boring material interesting and easy to pay attention too. also has prerecorded lecture videos that cover the same material in the same way
Professor Johnson is super energetic and will definitely wake you up if you have this as an 8am! His lectures are very engaging and make sense with you're being tested on and what you're doing in discussion. Only downside is that his grading policy is very heavy on the final (40-45% of your grade!). However, he does curve his exams.
Quite simply, under absolutely no circumstances should you take Econ 101 with any other professor.
The class is difficult, but it's not impossible. Professor Johnson has engaging lectures that connect to the real world. He has a lot of office hours, and he's willing to help students. The tests are hard even though they are online, but he curves them.
The one and only choice for ECON101 at this school. Insanely great lecturer in class and helpful educator outside class. Attend his OH for learning more about Econ and getting better scores on assignments.
I was not particularly great at economics but Professor Johnson does a great job at explaining concepts. My TA was particularly good and had some good discussion sections. Dispite the difficulty, by the end of it, I really enjoyed the class and Prof. Johnson's lectures.
SAVE YOURSELF. STAY FAR AWAY FROM THIS CLASS. I am typically an A+ student, but I could not find myself doing well in the course whatsoever. His lectures don't make sense and he doesn't explain anything and assumes you already know all the material. I read the entire textbook and kept up with lectures and work. There is no hope for doing well.
DJ is a legend, probably best professor I'll ever have. The lectures are interesting and relevant to what is going on in the world so they make you feel really informed. the dude is hilarious and his crazy energy in the morning is the only thing that kept me awake during 8 am lectures. yes this class is early but you need to take it
Electric lectures that make you connect with the content. Hes an ex-Harvard professor though that writes his own tests so the tests are pretty hard.
Professor Johnson is my favorite professor at UW. He is just so good at making Economics interesting and applicable to the real world. GO TO OFFICE HOURS. His lectures are fascinating, but he does go fast, so office hours will save you.
Professor Johnson is a great professor, but econ 101 itself is incredibly boring, and the exams are really challenging. If you need to take econ 101, or have a genuine passion for economics, definitely take it with DWJ, but if this class is not needed for your major, don't take it at all.
Overall, this class was challenging. I missed quite a few lectures but did all the homework and read the textbook. He covers critical material in the lectures, so it is important to go (otherwise there are recorded videos online). I did poorly on the midterms and the final but still ended with a B. Very generous curves and very caring professor.
If you dont have any sort of passion for economics before taking a course from Professor Johnson, you certainly will afterward. He is very passionate about the subject matter, and takes significant steps to ensure his students have the same passion, despite massive lecture sizes. Overall, a truly wonderful Professor.
As a freshman, Johnson is probably one of the best professors I've had this semester. A lot of people might say that his problem sets are difficult and exams are hard but you actually learn so much from it in retrospect. Never regretted it.
Easily one of the best professor's at Madison. He really cares about his students and LOVES teaching. However the course is really really hard, in my opinion. The lectures are so much fun, but the exams and midterms are very difficult (the mean is always really low). All in all, I learnt a lot from this class which is what I think is important!
Johnson is the best economic prof in the whole university! He constructed his course logically and organized. He read economic news at the beginning of each class which was interesting and introduced the following topic of each lecture. He allowed unlimited attempts for problem sets and would give extra credit which would boost your grade.
Always makes lectures entertaining and interesting, cares about teaching and wants you to really understand the material. He is also really good at being available for office hours, and he will talk your ear off about anything you want to know if you don't stop him. Helps to read textbook, but not necessary.
Literally the GOAT. You won't find another professor that cares about teaching more than David. The greatest lectures ever. No slides, just pure knowledge, high energy, and a lot of chalk. David spends the first 30 or so minutes going over current events and directly relates what you're learning to real-life events. Best experience. Go to his OH!!
David Johnson the GOAT. I took Intermediate Micro with him - a tough class, but I think he did a great job explaining. Lectures are awesome and his energy is always there. UW Legend.
The professor is really awesome, no one could teach better than how he does. The only problem is that the exams are really tough, but they will be highly curved, if you attend the lecture(also provided as recording), and complete the problem set and the review for exam, you can easily score. I would highly recommend taking this professor.
Johnson is absolutely amazing. His lectures are very engaging and he has a lot of energy. There is never a dull moment in lecture with Johnson running around the room. He's the type of professor where he will make the concepts in an application based so you understand its purpose.
Econ 101 was great with Johnson!! His lectures are so engaging for 8:25 in the morning. This class is hard but I would recommend reading the textbooks and spending time on the problem sets. Good Luck!!
Johnson is one of the best professors at Madison. He cares deeply about his students and wants them to succeed, but to use their own brains. Couldn't recommend him highly enough, if you get an opportunity to take a class with him, jump at the opportunity.
Professor Johnson's class was engaging and his notes aren't just from a slide, which made learning concepts more retainable. SUPER energetic in the morning and is super accessible outside of lecture (has many office hours). Also reads articles from real life events and applications to pair with what he teaches in class which is also helpful.
10/10 amazing professor. If material is difficult for you - go to office hours!!! They helped me so much. Johnson comes off as a little crazy but H\he is so engaging and loves economics which makes learning more enjoyable. Great lectures, also has recorded lectures for when you don't want to go to class.
Hands down, best professor I've ever had and I would definitely take another class with him if the opportunity arose. I had not studied any economics before taking Econ 101 and Prof. Johnson made me super interested in the subject with his passion and energy. I had lectures with him at 8:30 in the morning but looked forward to them every time!
As the other reviews indicate, this is half lecture and half comedy show. David is beyond funny. He makes learning enjoyable, especially for a tough introductory course like this. Beware, this course is hard (and heavily curved), but this is a Harvard-educated man giving Harvard-quality lectures.
The best lecturer you'll ever have. period.
If you have to take Econ101, take it with Johnson. This class is difficult, I went in thinking it would be easy since I took Econ in hs but I found it to be very hard. With that being said, Johnson is an amazing lecturer and he does everything he can to make it easier on his students (HUGE curve). He's super funny and approachable. LOVE!!!
TAKE DAVID JOHNSON!!!! He is a king. The tests are impossible and I got a 50% on every one but ended with an A/B because he curves and gives so many opportunities to get your grade up. He gave us a 5% increase for doing a practice test. Also dropped our worst midterm. So funny i hate Econ and am bad at it but he made it okay
Professor Johnson knows what he's doing. My friends and I sat on the third row, and his energy literally woke us up at 8:25 AM every single class. Very few lectures towards the end of the semester were confusing and the exams were challenging, but he still made econ101 my favorite class this semester. Would 100% recommend taking it with him!!
Prof Johnson is an amazing lecturer, he is very engaging. It was easy to get help outside of class, which you will need because the material is heavy and requires a lot of reading and lecture engagement.
Took this my freshman year and it was the best intro for econ and now I am an econ major. I am going to take every class that he teaches once he is back from his sabbatical. The class was hard, but I learned a lot from putting the work in. I still remember what I learned in the class a year later and I hope to take him for 301.
This class is impossible, we are almost done with the semester and I have zero clue what is going on in this class. Office hours are packed with people and he often goes off topic. Screams at the top of his lungs during lecture so you cant even learn during lecture. Would be okay as an upper level prof, but NOT for a 101 class.
I love his lectures and he was super engaging, also paired with a good TA who helped make sense of tough course material. Because he's super passionate his grading feels tougher and exams are A LOT of the grade. Really enjoy him as a professor, and he tries to accommodate students. Problem sets have decent forgiveness, but work is not easy.
He is obviously very passionate about his job, but is hard to follow in class as he does not use slides and just writes on the chalk board. The exams are pretty tough but are curved a lot. He isn't a bad choice of a professor, especially if you're good at economics. I wouldn't take him again, but I can see why so many love him.
Prof. Johnson is absolutely amazing. He is an inspiration! He genuinely loves his job and has so much knowledge. With lots of office hours through the week it is easy to ask questions about HW, life, etc. Concepts can be hard to grasp and studying is definitely required, for tests make up the greatest percentage of your grade, it is definitely ok.
Professor Johnson's lectures are extraordinarily entertaining, it's almost like a performance. He's very knowledgeable and willing to talk with you outside of class about any topic you bring up. As for the class itself its relatively easy. Attend lectures and do the problem sets and you'll be prepared for the tests. The class is curved too.
David Johnson is a nice guy, and offers a generous curve. But, the material is so boring and doesn't make sense if you don't already know a lot about econ.
He may be bipolar because he goes from screaming to whispering in his lectures and even with that I still saw people falling asleep. There are also no slides and he only writes on a chalkboard in a 300-person lecture so you just can't see anything he's writing. Also, he doesn't use canvas??? I literally changed my major after taking his class.
Do not take Professor Johnson. For one, he does not use Canvas. Everything is done through MindTap. He also has a very funky lecture style that is impossible to follow - scribbling random notes and screaming at the top of his lungs before going to a whisper. Just a weird experience overall. You would be better suited with a different professor.
Although his lectures weren't required, he doesn't use lecture slides or post many reviews from them. He is great at connecting real-world examples with the basics of econ. Would recommend if you want to learn about economics and put in the work but otherwise if taking for general credit take a different professor. Exams are hard but curved.
I would say if you didn't take Johnson for 101 don't switch to him as he covers more material in 101 and 102 than others. Attend Office Hours for TA and Johnson or Tutoring, Johnson office hours will be packed. I thought he was better at teaching 101, but 102 might have just been harder. Do all the study material before exams as exams are similar.
Professor Johnson's lectures are a captivating experience. Though the coursework is challenging, his passion and willingness to assist students make it worthwhile. Unstuckstudy AI and the free textbook are great study tools to supplement the class.
One of the best lecturers at UW-Madison. If you get the chance, you need to take a class with him at least once. The material is challenging, but he does his best to explain the concepts in an easy-to-understand way. He teaches very energetically and passionately.
He gives energy and makes me like studying Economics.
Honestly, I would take him again just for the entertainment rather than the actual success from the class. He is very quirky and teaches in such an interesting way that keeps everyone engaged and interested. But, there is very little material to help you be successful in homeworks/exams, so you really HAVE to go to lecture in order to do well.
He is the most charismatic and funny person I've met, and he actually cares about the topics he teaches. I highly recommend you go to all the classes; I haven't missed a single lecture despite it being a 8:30am. However, sometimes he speaks too fast and my brain can't keep up with that so I need to go to the TA to ask questions instead of him.
I hated my time in this class and I will not recommend picking him. The lectures were very fast paced which makes it super hard to keep up with him. There are no past papers provided and his lectures do cover a lot of irrelevant stuff (stuff which isn't gonna help you do well on the exam). Also shouts and screams too much. Please pick Steve Trost.
Favorite professor I've ever had. He is so enthusiastic about what he lectures about. I had him in a lecture hall with no microphone so he would yell the whole lecture. Every word. He was able to answer questions easily and had good office hours. He would start each class off by giving an update on current events in the economy. Great professor.
This course was by far the hardest class I have taken. You will struggle if you do not form study groups, meet one-on-one with your TA, or go to office hours. Having no prior knowledge of Econ made this course extremely difficult, and the only way I was able to grasp concepts slightly was by spending countless hours reading the textbook.
Love love loved this class and it made me realize that I really liked econ. his lectures are very entertaining, but I sometimes found some concepts hard to grasp. Luckily he had like 20 hours of office hours per week, and he made it very understandable. taking a course with anyone else would be a HUGE mistake.
Johnson's lectures were very useful and entertaining. However, there is no provided material in the case that you miss a lecture. Discussions are technically required for points but are a very small portion of the grade. There is a good amount of reading, but the textbook used is simple to read, so readings don't take very long.
This guy knows economics very well. Able to answer any questions with extremely helpful graphical or numerical explanations. Gives the entire lecture on a chalkboard with no notes, just pure knowledge. Definitely take 302 with him if you get the chance. He also has a very interesting personality which keeps lectures engaging
Prof. Johnson has a very enthusiastic personality and engaging lectures. He tries to connect the material to the real world and cares a lot about the topic and students. There is a fair amount of material and I would recommend staying caught up in the textbook. The exams felt difficult but were curved and grading was very reasonable.
Professor David Johnson is an absolute gem of a UW-Madison professor. If you get the opportunity to take his course or talk to him, take advantage of how open and vibrant his personality is by going to office hours. He has a holistic understanding of the material he teaches and is eager to give real world examples.
DO NOT TAKE DAVID JOHNSON. He is theatrical and SCREAMS all the way throughout lectures. It was so distracting I did not understand a thing. The three exams are worth 80% of your grade, so you have to do good. Extra credit helped a lot at the end but I did not learn anything.
Best professor I've had at UW Madison thus far. If you have the opportunity to take him for 302 I would highly recommend. He does yell and run around the classroom but he's so entertaining, makes the material applicable to the outside world and he really understands the material and explains everything very well. Tests are kind of hard so study.
If you want to be screamed at in lecture at 8 am, this is the professor for you. He also makes economics significantly more difficult than all the other professors so definitely switch to someone else.
Made Econ very hard, teaches very fast, does not post the notes or use Canva (uses MindTap instead), writes on a chalkboard, long homework assignments due every week, final is 40% of your grade. Though - he is funny and very theatric you may not like being yelled at in his early morning lectures.
Funny, very animated during class. Never got tired once in my 8am. He's a very intelligent dude
Man made my 8:25 am lecture worth going to. Very animated in class that makes you want to learn because you want to know why he's so passionate about this subject matter. Problem sets did take a while each week and his use of mindtap instead of canvas is very tedious and annoying but about the only downside of taking this class.
Amazing professor but difficult course with different expectations than other professors. He will hold your attention in lecture and is great at conveying the relevance of the information. However, all exams are in-person and no notes are allowed, the best you can hope for is a large curve.
Johnson definitely had really high expectations of his students, but his lectures reflected that. He gives you a bunch of ways to understand the material if you don't understand lecture. The first and second midterm aren't that bad, but the final is notoriously difficult. The curve is generous though so don't stress out too much. Very entertaining!
Johnson's style is like no other's but that is a good thing. His old school lecturing forces one to be engaged and is useful in reinforcing the contents of the textbooks. his review sessions are appreciated. his additional readings and connecting of course content to the news is beneficial
I learned a lot from this course. It was super interesting. Tests were hard, though, and heavily curved.
Did not use canvas which I thought wasn't even allowed, instead using myLab exclusively which was prone to issues. Would scream and overall be an annoying lecturer but if you don't go you will miss out if important details you need just to pass. Also bad at communicating by email, wouldn't recommend.
Goated professor.
Professor Johnson was very loud and energetic which made lectures way more fun. He explained stuff very well. He was an amazing professor but he went way further into economics than other econ 101 teachers and his tests were harder than other econ professors from what I've heard although he makes up for it with a big curve.
Econ 330 with him was a great experience. He always taught with passion, and every lecture was informative and engaging.I especially appreciated how he used real-world examples to explain economic concepts, which helped me see economics more practically. He is one of the best professors at UW–Madison😊, and I would love to take his course again.
