The class is hard, in that you have to work a lot to earn a good grade. You actually learn in his class. Essay test, have to apply the material, and he takes roll every day.
the upper level classes can really kick your ass, but for ways of knowing, he rocks.
This guy is really passionate about philosophy. So passionate that he likes to keep students over time to still teach. I don't like that. He screams when he teaches, so sit in the back. Other than that, he's okay, not great. If you like to get out of class early, I would not recommend him.
He lectures way too fast, tells you not to take notes, but if you don't you'll fail for sure. I will have A's in all my other classes because I'm more than willing to work hard, but I'll probably end up with a C in his class. The essay test has 3 questions and he wants 5-7 pgs for each one!
ihate this teacher with a passion. i wrote more papers in this class than i did in my english 1102 class. it was completly ridiculus. i have all a's and b's in all my other classes in my two years of college and i made a c in his class. i was pissed. you have to go to alot of stupid lectures too.
This teacher is a good guy! He really is. He just expects too much out of a core class. He is really passionate about what he teaches. If this class was a graduate class he would be perfect, but it is not and he has made it just to hard.
He's an arrogant jerk.
I hated him so much. I have all A's and B's in all my classes in college and a C in his class. THats ridiculus. Way too much writting and his class made no sense to me. I WOULD NEVER NEVER NEVER RECOMMEND HIM TO ANYONE, only my worst enemy.
Dr. Jones is a type of professor that is not seen much anymore. A professor professes, he or she is not suppose to change the diapers of those who need pampering. Dr. Jones is a great professor b/c he actually expects his students to succeed, and in order for one to succeed, one has to be challenged. I did great in his class b/c I actually tried.
without a doubt, the best teacher at KSU! if you care about yourself and your life, do yourself a favor and take this man for anything!!!
good teacher, loves what he does, great stories, hard tests :(

all the folks who **** about Jones are just too stupid to understand or too lazy to put any effort into critical thinking!
The best teacher on campus. Has been the adviser for the best student organization on campus (voted three years in a row!) Last years' academic student of the year was his assistant. Has done more to raise the level of discussion on campus than any other teacher to date. Of course he's hard. Wisdom is not a flower to be plucked; it is a mountain to be climbed.
This guy is awesome.
I went in to his class thinking this guy was an arrogant jerk, but after a few weeks with him I realized that he's a very kind man with a strong sense of li (if you don't know what that is, take him and you'll find out). Seriously, take his classes. If you're a serious student, you'll be glad you did.
HORRIBLE TEACHER!!! LOVES TO HEAR HIMSELF TALK SO MUCH THAT HE KEEPS EVERYONE LATE EVERY DAY! ESSAY TESTS, GRADES HARSHLY. HE SAYS THAT MOST PEOPLE SHOULD MAKE A "C" & HE GRADES ACCORDINGLY.
This is not an easy class but it is lots of fun. He's a good professor and a good person.
Dr. Jones is AWESOME. He is an amazingly brilliant professor with a great personality!! He shares his viewpoints but also accepts the views of his students. If you get the chance TAKE HIM!!!
i have always regretted dropping this class in fall 2003. he struck me as arrogant at first, but could actually see that he was sincere and kind. i regret being a defensive jerk in return and when i'd run into him afterwards, he was cold. a brilliant man from all i've heard and wished i'd stayed in the class. leave attitude at the door
He is very scatterbrained. Doesn't stay on topic. Jumps around to different philosophers. Does not use powerpoint or textbook. So if you are lost or miss a day your screwed. Not a fun class. Very boring. I would advise anyone NOT to take him.
Lots of whining. "I make all A's..." Probably b/c your other classes were a joke. Jones knows his stuff; most profs just wants a paycheck. Dont believe me, take a PHIL class by ROUSE. If you want all A's, go to technical or IT school, where you can buy (literally) a degree. If you are anything approaching a serious student, stop crying and WORK!
1. Its a HARD CLASS 2.You MUST WORK HARD if you take his class 3. YOU MUST attend out of class lectures 4. ALOT OF WRITING. Basically, its a hard class. However, its amazing how much Ive learned and how much I enjoyed his class. Hes a fascinating guy. HARD CLASS, but worth it if your not LAZY!
He expects A LOT from his students. This was NOT an easy class however it was the most enjoyable class ive ever taken. Attendance&after class lectures mandatory! Take him if you are a HARD WORKER and want to actually learn something. The lazy ppl are the ones on here who are whining and complaining.
A brilliant man, indeed. Also has a great sense of humor. Is actually very kind. Challenges the students. Best prof/favorite class I've had so far. A's are nearly unheard of, I got a B. Had to attend 5 outside lectures & write essays for each. First test+essay was hard, 2nd was way hard, but the last 2 tests were easy. Very helpful prof via email.
WONDERFUL CLASS! You will LOVE PHILOSOPHY After taking this class.Jones is AMAZING! However this is an EXTREMELY HARD CLASS! However it WAS WORTH IT!He MAKES u work and I love him for it! He shows u what college SHOULD be like. WONDERFUL CLASS,and yes its VERY HARD! So beware!
Extremely hard teacher. I took him as a Freshman and it affected my gpa in a upleasant way. This class seperates the workers/slackers significantly. Test are cumlative. Lectures, no pp. Essays 5-7pg. out of class assignment
5-7 page essays. out of class lectures. If you can't attend the lectures he gives you near impossible out of class assignments, No PPT Doesnt give you a clue what tests will be over. To define a word he makes u write a definition give an example, give differentia, then you have to classify the word with other words. GPA will be hurt.
Easy if you go to classes. The people with negative comments don't belong at a university. Managed an A in this class with little effort. Best Teacher I've ever had... ever.
I considered dropping after the first class, but after a few weeks I came to enjoy philosophy because of Dr. Jones. He has been the best professor I have had since coming to KSU. He will challenge you to think instead of regurgitate facts. Be prepared to give your best!
Tough teacher... he will make you work hard for your grade. Regardless, he is a great teacher who knows a lot about philosophy.
Dr. Jones is a great teacher & really wants his students to learn & think on their own.He offers discussion sessions outside of class that are helpful. You will read from original texts written by Plato ect. Reading is challenging but rewarding. He loves it when you ask questions.I knew zip about philosophy before this class but I have learned a lot.
Really entertaining class. If you want to get a decent grade, GO TO CLASS. The lectures are interesting, but I hate philosophy, so it was difficult to understand everything. You have to attend out of class lectures and write summaries, but they aren't bad. He's really reasonable, but diffcult class. Study, study, study!
Dr. Jones loves what he does, and it shows. He likes to challenge his students. Be prepared to work hard and put extra time into this class. Exams are really hard, but you can get an A in his class. He recognizes when students are putting forth effort to do well. Overall, the lectures are very interesting, and you will learn a lot.
Dr. Jones is easily the best professor at KSU, but definitely one of the most difficult. He knows philosophy, and expects you to learn it while in his class. Give an honest effort to understand the material and you'll be fine. His lecture style is extremely helpful, and his classes are never boring. Go to class, read the material, do the work.
Out of all my classes this was without a doubt my hardest one. Yet, my favorate. He does not take attentence but if you do not go to class your going to fail. He does not do powerpoints or online notes. Everything is from his spoken lecture. Its not as hard as it seems if you take good notes and actually attempt to understand the material.
Amazing professor, I absolutely loved attending his lectures. The material was pretty difficult and his papers certainly weren't easy, but overall it was a very satisfying class. I still can't get over his last lecture to our class, incredible professor. Take him if you get the amazing opportunity.
Dr. Jones is awesome. Go to class. Do the reading. Attend what lectures you can and tell him when you can't. He knows what he's talking about and if you don't, ASK HIM. He will go out of his way to explain it to you. Yes, he grades harshly, but anyone who just hands you an A isn't doing you any favors. He'll try as hard for you as you do for him.
The material in this class is difficult, so don't expect it to be an easy A. However, if you GO TO CLASS (you can't pass without going) & take notes (no powerpoints, just spoken lecture), you can do well. Prof. Jones knows what he's talking about & it shows- he WILL help you understand if you ask. 5 out-of-class lectures but I went to 1 & got a B.
To be successful in Dr. Jones' 2200 class, you only need to attend class, pay attention and take notes. His lectures and aporetic teaching method will leave you significantly more intelligent and thirsting for knowledge. A fantastic, life-altering course.
Prior to this class, I enjoyed Philosophy as a hobby to read on a slow day, but the sheer amount of work he piled onto his students made me dislike it all together. He tried his best to engulf everyone's interest in philosophy, but took it too far. Difficult class, so-so helpful teacher.
He doesn't offer any assignments until a week after the drop/add date. There is no way to gauge aptitude for the course. The students are expected to look up and read everything on their own. There is no textbook for the course.
Dr. Jones is AWESOME. It's not an easy class, but he's a great teacher. The material is interesting, and so is he. Definitely recommend.
Freaked out when I read reviews on here but honestly ignore them. Never failed anything. All you have to so is show up and take good notes. He really knows what he is talking about and has definitely changed my outlook on life for the better. Those who are complaining his class is hard are kids who have had everything handed to them in life. Learn.
Go to every extra credit, study like its the SAT, read every book whether or not he tells you to, memorize every word he says like its the Bible and judgement day is coming in a month, and hope to pass. I got an A. I've never tried at any class so hard in my life. Best class ever. Changed my life. It should be required to graduate.
The finest professor you will ever have. Study. If that's too hard for you to do, then drop his class. It's that simple.
Dr. Jones is very knowledgeable and passionate about Philosophy. I enjoyed his lecture. But unfortunate professor Jones grade very hard. He is VERY DIFFICULT, Do not take his class unless you are prepared for a challenge course, take notes, a lot of good notes. You need to be ready to sacrificed your GPA. Good Luck
Best professor I have ever had! David Jones will be one of the teachers I say had a HUGELY POSITIVE impact on my career. His class is based on novels/books instead of a textbook, which I find much easier to study from. He loves what he is teaching which makes the course clear and enjoyable. I would take all of his Philosophy classes if I could!!!
Love him or hate him. He is passionate about philosophy. He hates teaching the summer semester so you should steer clear of taking it during the summer. I went in excited to learn and walked out thinking why didn't I take one of the other electives. You choose, go to his first class see if you click with him.
I was so very lost in this class. It seemed I was the only do do in a class full of geniuses. But I still got a B. Take VERY good notes. You probably can get by with good notes and not reading the material. 20 people dropped the class out of fear but it wasn't that bad. He's a lil unorganized which can work in your favor. He wants chili peppers so
Dr. Jones inspires you. You MUST pay attention. Through taking diligent notes and participating can you attain an A. If you're someone who can't make class, your grade will drop a letter grade after two absences, then every absence afterword is another letter grade subtracted. He loves Hiwaii btw.
Dr. Jones is hands down the most amazing professor I've ever encountered. He's very nice, knowledgeable, and passionate. He seems very intimidating at first, but as the class goes on you all warm up to each other. It's tough and you have to actually think, but it is so worth taking. I wish I failed so I could take it again honestly, but I got an A
Individualistic, metaphorical, and inspirational.
Dr. Jones is a great teacher and phenomenal philosopher. He is not for the feint of heart. His course was undoubtedly the hardest class I have ever taken in 4 years of college. His tests are beyond difficult and their is little structure to the course. If there were no grades and we could just sit and listen to him speak, it would be a great exp.
Professor Jones is a special kind of teacher. He really cares for his students and want's to see all of his students do well and enjoy the class. He will make jokes during his lectures. His tests were averagely hard. DO NOT MISS CLASS!!!!! I would recommend buying the books or renting them because it helps to understand the material better.
His class was so interesting. Prepare to leave every class with your mind blown. His class is sp unique and introspective. You will see the world differently after learning philosophy from him. His exams were very difficult. I spent a majority of the year worried about my grade, but he gives extra credit and even curved our final so youll be fine.
The lectures are not engaging and very difficult. You have to read a lot and research outside of the lectures because they are not easy to understand. The teacher talks way above your head instead of explaining or teaching the material. The grading is very harsh. The discussion posts are like mini research papers.
Wonderful professor. One of the few who actually engages in serious Philosophical debate. If you are serious about Philosophy, look no further. If you're looking for an easy A, go somewhere else. He not only cares about your studies; he also cares about you as a person.
An exceptional teacher and philosopher who cares for his students very deeply. If you take his class you will not only learn about the nature and history of philosophy, but also about the reality of life. It should be noted that there are very few grades for this course and an immense amount of reading. Very challenging, but deeply rewarding.
Super kind and funny guy, all around awesome human. He is very caring and will meet you half way if you put in the effort. This class can be difficult if youre not a good note taker. Pay very close attention to his lectures, be engaged, do the reading and you will do fine. Not a lot of outside resources and very few grades. I still loved him!
Unless you are truly passionate about and have previously studied philosophy, most of this material will likely go right over your head. Each of the 4 tests can cover anything from about 12 hours of lecture over the span of a month with no textbooks and no powerpoints to refer to. I would not recommend this as an "introduction" to philosophy.
Professor Jones is definitely the professor to choose if you are genuinely wanting to learn the material for the class. There is a lot of reading involved, lectures, and just knowing your material period needed. I definitely finished class with greater knowledge of philosophy!
His class is the hardest that I've ever taken. I was a straight A student in high school and I am currently making A's in all my classes except his. His lectures are not clear and extremely difficult to understand. He has not been very helpful to me either. I would definitely not recommend taking his class. It stinks.
I took this guy for an intro class, a big mistake. He makes you put in way too much work, his lectures are very boring and he takes no time to try to relate it to real-life issues or instances. It's more like the history of philosophy. I had to drop the class and so did a lot of people I took it with. To make things easier on yourself, don't take.
I wouldn't recommend this class to ANYONE! Avoid this professor at all costs. I am a straight-A student making a 38 in his class... His material is unclear and the quizzes are very confusing. The lectures are on black screens with no subtitles. They're not engaging at all. There's also readings every week of 400+ pages.
He is incredibly knowledgeable and expects you to be self-motivated and willing to work hard. If you're not a philosophy major DO NOT take this class. If you are a philosophy major, this class will leave you educated but you will struggle for it. There's a lot of reading, the lectures are more important. His tests are vague and focus on lecture
I took multiples of his class, I only recommend 3030. In 3030, he was far fairer in his testing & expectations. His lectures are okay, but the reading is more important. You have to read or you will not pass beyond a C. The material is certainly worth any struggle, & gives you the toolkit to combat the nihilism Jones will imbue you with. :/
I really enjoyed Dr. Joness class. It was very challenging, so I would only really take his class if youre naturally gifted in Philosophy or at least very passionate about it. Jones isnt the best professor but hes the real deal and knows philosophy like the back of his hand. I learned a lot and I really liked his class!
Long lectures that can be boring and makes you work for the grade. 2 quizzes weekly, reading quiz at the start of the week over readings (T/F) and comprehension quiz (free response) at the end over lecture and reading. It's a critical thinking class so be prepared to put actual work in and not have an easy A just because it's an "intro" class.
Be prepared to pay attention during lectures and to do lots of reading. A challenging class but it's expected for something that's a critical thinking req at KSU. His quizzes can be tough but he does give partial credit for anything you type in for free response. Final was all MC and pretty easy. Would rec if you don't mind reading and thinking :)
I really did not understand this class at all as a beginner's philosophy class. His lectures are among the worst (podcast form, no power points) I have ever had out of every class. Very hard to understand the material needed to complete his tough free response comphrehension quizzes. If you do not have a passion for philopsophy, dont take this clas
This man assigns 300 page books to read every week, and then gives you closed book quizzes where you have to answer obscure questions that you would only get if you listened to his lectures in detail. He's extremely picky with the grading and doesn't give any help to students with extra credit/points. He makes it so hard to get a decent grade.
His lectures are boring and in podcast form, making them seem much, much longer than they actually are. He assigns incredibly complex readings you must do in a week and then quizzes you on the most nuanced details from the lectures and readings. If you enjoy philosophy do NOT take him, and if you have to do NOT take him online.
For this class, you must be highly self-motivated and have a passion for philosophy otherwise you'll fail. His lectures are in podcast form and he assigns 100+ page readings each week. Unless you listen intently to the podcasts, read thoroughly & with great comprehension, take notes in great detail and memorize you will fail.
He's not a bad guy, very knowledgeable, but the man is a bit pretentious. Refuses to be accessible to different learning styles- lectures were recorded w/ voice only. VERY hard tests b/c there's a lot of info. If you understand his teaching style, you'll do great. He does have clear grading points system, and is pretty organized overall.
DON'T TAKE! I took him for a summer class but the work was to impossible to complete. All his lectures are podcast base, no slide shows, no nothing just his voice. There are quizzes every week which are 4 questions. There is also test every week which are lockdown browser & webcam. I didn't stay around long enough to take those. Take someone else!
Ridiculous amount of reading for an introductory course. He requires 6 books, some which must be read in full. Avoid at all costs if you are not invested in philosophy as passion and are only taking this as a required course.
Ridiculous amount of work for gen ed course. Don't bother taking this unless you have the time to listen to his hour long podcasts on top of the multiple reading assignments and quizzes each week. You have to take extensive notes on everything including his podcasts, there *will* be obscure references from it on the quizzes.
Professor Jones is very knowledge of the course, but there is A LOT of information provided. His reading is easy in the beginning but expands to be entire book lengths expected to be finished in 2 days. The course isn't terrible if you go along the guidelines of previous quizzes/test. Be prepared for voice only lectures, and read the syllabus!
Professor is unorganized and expects students to dedicate time every single day for an intro class that's supposed to be asynchronous. Quizzes are open for 10 hours on specific weekdays that ended up conflicting with most students' schedules. No textbook, just his podcast. Glad I got out while I could. I've never dropped a class before this.
He open and close quizzes on the same day, which is totally outrageous since there is people who work and need night time to get school work done. I withdraw from this class, and I was not intending to, but the amount of work combined with the other 3 classes I am taking is impossible. If you have the option to take another professor, DO IT!
Just to be frank with whoever is reading this: avoid at all costs. This was hands down the hardest class I've taken *ever*, and most people failed or had to withdraw. There are 1 (or more) hour long "podcasts" a week and the tests (all short answer) are incredibly detailed and extremely difficult. 100+++ pages of reading. avoid avoid avoid
He starts one of his lectures off by saying "I am not sorry" and he means it. So hyper intellectual that he's actually not good at teaching and his students suffer because of it. If you are needing to get all A's to keep a scholarship, maybe hold off on taking this class for a bit.
By all measures, Dr. Jones' asynchronous Ancient and Medieval Philosophy course comprised the most tedious, unrewarding, and unfulfilling experience of my college career. What little I gained from his instruction had more to do with the effort I put into prying answers from his lectures than with any sort of "teaching" on his part.
Really was not good at understanding why his students were failing. Would look at the sub 50% test scores and did not think anything wrong with his teaching methods.
Class relies on lectures and books that are 300+ pages that should be read every week. Extremely tough grader, if you don't turn in an assignment exactly as he says you'll receive a zero. His only lectures are hour long podcasts, and there's at least two reading and comprehension quizzes each, every week and the questions/answers are vague.
This has easily been the worst class I have ever taken. Hour or more long lectures for 5 question quizzes with little room to succeed. 300+ page books to read each week with 2 comprehension tests each week as well. Class average on majority of the tests was below 50%. The lectures are presented as a black screen with a monotone dialogue.
Class was based almost exclusively on 5 question quizzes that cover a ton of content. He had us reading a full book and week + supplemental readings in addition to lectures. He offers no feedback on discussion posts or tests.
I have a 4.0 this was the one class I was worried about a possible B I ended up with an 86% and the curve got me up to a 99. You need a solid understanding of philosophy and ability to reason through the material with no help I suggest finding an expert of the material to help I really like the YouTube channel Moan Inc for the Greek section.
Had him for 2 days, instantly saw how rigorous this course was for a gen ed, dropped it. Got a way better professor instead. DO NOT take this guy unless you wanna spend your entire semester doing a crap ton of work and reading.
So this dude decides that a THREE credit hour INTRO course needs at least 10 hours per week spent on it. No way, its also incredibly boring, and I love philosophy. DO NOT TAKE HIMMM
Very tough grader, quizzes are not so bad, but tests are very tricky. You need a clear understanding of all of the lecture material before taking any quiz or test. Discussion posts have to be very specific which is hard to do when the material is already too much to process. There are also 6 books you need for this course which is asking a lot.
I will certainly say that Dr. Jones is very passionate about philosophy to the point where only an elite few make the cut in his classes. I learned a lot of interesting things (before I dropped) but due to severe ADHD the extreme workload delayed my graduation by bringing my performance in my other classes down with his class.
This class is no joke - the workload is intense, with long lectures, tons of reading, and tough quizzes. But with the right study tools like unstuck ai, it's doable. Just be prepared to put in the time and effort.
