his lectures are outstanding. he really gets the big pictures across. very helpful and a genuine guy
cool dude
No Comments
A fun guy to listen to, and he obviously knows his stuff. Explained everything in detail, and tried to get the class to participate, which can be annoying, but it was helpful nonetheless.
It's not an easy course! If i had to take it again (thank god i don't), id take it with him!
he is a great lecturer but the class is very demanding and vigorous. its like a grad level class so be prepared
Great man! Note: Never miss a day of class. Take a tape recorder and tape his lectures. Jot down every word he says and study after every lecture. Follow this regimen and you'll no doubt get an A in his class. Oh yeah, visit him during his office hours!
very good teacher!
He's a very cool guy. He explains very well and makes the class fun. You have to take notes though, even though he says to just pay attention to his slide show. He's test are kinda hard.
General bio. will always be tough (as it should be), but Julian really makes it fun and puts a lot of effort into his Powerpoints. Plus, he's kind of cute. Be sure to attend class.
A very knowledgable professor. This guy definitely knows his stuff, but kind of has a stick up his ass. He has a tendency to try to embarrass people and prove things you've learned in the past wrong. Attending lectures is a must and don't fall behind because he moves along really fast.
His tests are difficult. on the first test I got an A after the curve, but the second one was impossible. a lot of people failed before the curve because 45 minutes was no where near enough time to take it. Read the book and take notes at the lectures everyday
horrible
He's a good teacher, and YES his tests are hard, but it's a pre-med weed-out class. Use the Supplemental Instruction that they are offering now. It helps a LOT, and I have no doubt the people who regularly attend have notably higher averages. Sit up front - it'll make you pay attention.
Excellent teacher, communicates material very well. Definitely go to lectures (you'll want to) and take notes using his online notes. I used these as an outline and made my own notes while reading. He's a fun guy and his cell phone story worked pretty well at getting ppl to turn their's off.
Great teacher, funny guy...knows his biology very well. Lectures are fun and interesting. His tests are challenging but fair.
Interesting enough for me to go.
Fun to be in class every day. He is very cocky, but makes the class interesting. Read along in the book as he goes, and utilize the study guide book. Can get an A with the appropriate effort.
He makes the class interesting and will keep you awake, but his tests are inconsistantly difficult. First test was a joke, but the second was impossible. As much as I felt like I learned a lot in his class, my grade tells a different story.
His test are difficult although he tells you that whatever material he covers in class is the only stuff you need to know for the test, supplemented with the material in the book. MMmm...thats not entireley true. You definitely need to apply the material much further on the tests. Don't get frustrated. Its a weedout class for pre-meds.
Well...where to start. This pompous ass believes he is better than you and everyone in his class including maintenance. He told off a person trying to fix his equipment. Although he says his tests cover what is gone over in class...they don't. With an average of about 50 on the tests it is obvious he enjoys seeing his students discouraged.
Great teacher, tests not soo bad, take this guy if you get the chance
Another teacher that will mislead you on the difficulty of his first test, he say it's on his notes, yea ok thanks for that professor, am i gona get like 20 ice cream coupons (u'll see) for your lies?? Tries to crack jokes in class, tries. Just read the damn book, why oh why did i listen to that ****...
He says you can ace his tests and avoid the text by attending his lectures. BALONEY! You must know the text word-for-word and apply it. The class is too hard and half get Ds which are not dropped. Discussion periods are not help sessions or review. All of this for the MCAT, he says. BALONEY! Anything not taught by this nut would be better!!!
Great teacher, nice guy.Moves REALLY fast. He's smart as hell, and he reminds you of that every day...and every test.Does a great job explaining the APPLICATION of the material (which is on the tests),but you need to learn the material YOURSELF too if you want to do well on the tests. Studied my ASS OFF.9-10 hrs/wk.97% on both tests after curve.
Moves way too fast. You better study and know the material before going to lass or else it is a waste. Don't get stuck with this teacher!!!!!!
Oh man, this guy was rough. And he was paired with Dr. Davis. What was I thinking taking that pair? I have no idea. Dr. Julian is pretty pompous, and if you aren't willing to make this the class you spend all your time, don't be surprised if you end up with a bad grade. This is a tough class.
Granted it's a weed out class, I know its supposed to be hard. He's a smart guy, and let's you know it by making REALLY hard exams, so watch out, opt for Evans instead. Their class average was about 50 points higher...
he has no practice exams
Definite weed-out class. Whole grade based on 4 impossible tests! That's it! He writes the first 2. Get Evans if possible. Do not slack off early and hope you can pull it up in the end. You'll end up having to drop it.
His lectures were interesting, but his tests were way too hard to finish in 45 minutes. Take another teacher.
really hard teacher. speaks way too fast, & his exams are extremely confusing- he seems to want people to fail. you need to study A LOT if you take him!
This guy speaks entirely too fast, and his tests are ridiculous. He'll tell you in the beginning that he wants you to see "the overall picture", and not the details. THIS ISN'T TRUE. His tests are ALL details. Probably more helpful to actually just read the textbook.
Don't take him.... he is an arrogant man.... tests are INSANELY hard.....
Kind of harsh, likes to pick random people to answer questions, but he teaches very well off of powerpoint presentations and his tests come directly off of the notes. Notes also available online.
His lectures are somewhat interesting, but not relative to exam. It's really hard to get an A in this class. He has no practice exams so you don't know what to expect for the 1st exam so bam.. you D -it and ohh guess what? there's no drops :-) I dropped his class and I'm currently retaking it wih Herrera who is THE BOMB!
Great lecturer and really knows the material well. His tests are unlike anything youv'e ever seen. They are very hard, but you can manage if you use your brain. I received the lowest grade in my whole college life on the very first test, and still managed a B+.
They guy tells you straight off the bat that he wants you to call him Dave. He's an amazing lecturer. Most of the people in the class don't put any effort into it. Listen and take notes and read the assigned chapter. Tests are not bad at all. TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HIM.
LOVED THESE LECTURES!!! Do the reading, pay attention, print his slides, and do some sort of review and the exams aren't that bad. I really wish he was sticking around for the rest of the semester
Great professor! Lectures are very interesting and useful; he presents the information in a completely different way than the book, which helps to really learn the concepts (plus, he's amusing). Reading the book is a must, however. Sure, the tests are hard, but the work was worth it. Dave is a genius, can't wait to take another bio class with him.
I'd heard lots of bad things about Dr. Julian, but I liked his class. He's very smart, but you HAVE to study!! READ, READ, READ. Read the chapters before going to lecture, buy the Smokin'Notes, and don't wait until the last minute. As long as you pay attention, go to class, and READ AS YOU GO ALONG, you'll do fine. I got As on both tests.
very helpful during office hours. A difficult course but I learned a lot. I would highly recommend this course.
DAY 1 INTRO: "How many of you are premeds? (everyone raises hand) If one of your friend's phone goes off chances are we wont be seeing them in a couple of years. Only maybe the top 5% of this class make it to my ____ class (some 3000/4000 class)." It is the first real weed out class. Know literally everything in the text and you'll get the 97+
There are few teachers that live up to their hype, but this man is evil. I figured these comments were written by future drop-outs, but I was a straight A student and barely pulled a C. Those who did well studied every night, for HOURS! His tests are random, having nothing to do w/ his lectures. 50% of the class dropped and only 4/5 left passed.
He goes very fast in lecture and tests DO cover that material. I suggest to print out slides and bring to class. Read all required texts to pass the tests! He gives a lot of reading so make sure you keep up. Not an easy, yet not a boring professor.
Rough....Rough.... Possible to succeed if you give it a fair effort.
Definitely not one of my favorite profs. He kicked off our semester by being rather dishonest about the content of our first exam with predictably bad results. He moves incredibly fast and each lecture is jammed with too much info to process. I gave up and just read the book and Smokin' Notes, and pulled off an A.
READ READ READ AND ONCE AGAIN READ. Read as you go along and take notes because it is a lot of material that WILL be on the tests!
Very intellectual professor. Asks for much input on part of the students during lecutre. Socratic dialectic style.
He knows how to make someone feel lesser than life. Quite unapproachable.
Worst teacher I've ever had at UF by far!!! Tests have nothing to do with the material presented in class and he truly expects u to do well. I think he gets a kick out of our faces when we're taking the test b/c he's all smiles. Avoid him at all costs or suffer the worst semester ever. Never disliked a teacher so much in my life.
Unnecissarily difficult...Every question on tests is "all of the following are incosistent with the hypothesis except"...cant he just test to see if we know the material or not w/o trying to make our heads spin on the exams?
I agree that his tests were unfair. They were like mini-mcats in that many of the questions went far beyond the scope of the material he actually taught in lecture. Doing well in this class requires either being a naturally good test-taker or studying your butt off. However, he is an excellent lecturer.
The class is difficult, but if I could do it again, I would do it with Dr. Julian. You do have to know everything in the covered chapters, but if you're really into the material learning it is not so bad. He curves a lot too. Which helps a lot of people. Highly recommended to all pre-health types (and others).
A fantastic lecturer, despite the fact that PowerPoint is garbage. Gives difficult reasoning based tests, rather than the memorization tests more common in intro biology, which I appreciated. Put biology in a new light for me (Math Major) and I really enjoyed his class. I would strongly recommend him if you want to learn to THINK about biology.
Looks just like House (Hugh Laurie)! Definitely lectured well, however, he moves at a fast pace. My advice would be to READ THE CHAPTERS before coming to class (he sometimes asks questions and if no one raises their hand he'll pick someone at random to answer) and absorb the lecture. He is also really mean. Test was semi-fair. There is a curve.
Amazing lecturer. This is a SERIOUS weed-out class so of course you have study, though I studied my notes, read and outlined the chapters, and bought Smokin' Notes, and still would up with a C. Things you would thing would be covered in the exam weren't. He is very helpful though, he is mean, but gives you the honest answer.
Taught the first part of Bio 1 for Spring 09. His lectures are more interesting than the other professors but he's very rude and knows how to make you feel less than dirt. READ THE BOOK. I didn't do it and it cost me. Class average for his exam was a 66 but no curve because top 3% almost got perfect score. Try to take it with someone else.
DON'T PUT THE BOOK DOWN UNTIL YOU UNDERSTAND IT AND GO TO CLASS! He's a great lecturer but extremely cocky which gets really annoying. His test is only 25 questions and tough. He teaches the boring portion of bio (ATP and all that bs) so don't plan on being amazed when you go to class.
I didn't care for him personally, but I think he's a good lecturer. Bottom line is if you want an A in this class, you have to read and go to lecture. His exam was made out to be harder than it actually was, but it covers A LOT of material. Know the material and you'll do fine.
Dr. Julian is a really intelligent, well-spoken guy but, sometimes comes across as rude or smug. His lectures were interesting but fast-paced. He expects students to actually understand biology as opposed to just memorizing it. The exam wasn't too bad; I recommend attending lectures and reading the book. I got an A as did several of my friends.
terrible.i would try really hard to take this class with another professor. he explained the information well, but if you didnt read the book before hand then you wont understand bc he doesnt simplify it AT ALL. got a D+ on the test [average=66%] and he is very rude and makes people feel dumb infront of hundreds at lecture...lameee
Dr. Julian is one of the best lecturers I've had at UF. He is very intelligent, and his lectures are interesting. However, he can be extremely arrogant and intimidates his students. The first exam was very difficult, and the final was pretty average. You'll learn a lot in his class, but it was one of the most difficult I've taken at UF.
Julian is a great scientist and an excellent lecturer. We are lucky to have him at UF, and his perspective on topics discussed really get you to think about physiology in an evolutionary biology reference frame. If I had his resume, i would be slightly cocky as well. so suck it up and show him what you've got. My final average was curved to 97%.
PCB 4723C With Julian, this is one of the hardest classes as UF. Julian is brilliant, great lecturer, strong proponent of bell curve. I went into the final needing 104 out of 100 in order to get an A-, I somehow got 100 in the final and got an A. i.e. he curves the class greatly. Study hard go by his notes and dont be afraid to carry the book w you
He's by far the greatest lecturer I've had thus far at UF. Explains things very clearly. He is nice guy but his exam is not easy. He thought the first part of BSC2010 and it was terrible. However, his curve is generous. Overall great teacher with hard exam.
He is a very good lecturer and makes the material comprehensible and interesting. His test is somewhat challenging, but fair. Make sure you thoroughly study EVERYTHING he covers in lecture because some of his questions are on minute details. You need to read the textbook in addition to studying the material he covers in lecture.
Very good lecturer, kind of arrogant though. His test was very fair, but make sure you learn the material instead of just memorizing the vocab. Lastly make sure you read the book
Julian expects his students to try every means necessary to make an A. However, reading the book is paramount. His questions are not simple comprehension questions but they are more like "given this situation, which of the following would MOST LIKELY occur?" He is a very interesting and enthusiastic lecturer. With the effort, an A is possible.
Julian is an incredibly smart man, but he terrifies me. The test material did not reflect what he presented in his lectures. Definitely read the book, go to class, and do your very best. This is a HARD class. I passed with a C+, but I could've done better if I had prepared more.
Julian's portion of the class was very challenging. Reading the book is absolutely mandatory. He is extremely smart and sometimes can come off as arrogant. In the end I pulled off an A on his exam (with DAYS of studying, I assure you). Even though I didn't bubble in a code on my scantron he didn't take off points, so I guess he's not that bad :)
he is okay teacher his tests are really hard and it does not really reflect the stuff he goes over in class. He is really arrogant and not really helpful but he knows his material.
What everyone else says, for both BSC 2010/2011: READ the book. His lectures help clarify but his tests are EXTREMELY DETAILED from random sentences in the chapters (or at least it seems like it). He's a nice guy, he gets you laughing, he has plenty of clicker questions, but the test is HARD. Don't fall behind, and GET HELP if you need it!
He is not helpful in office hours and extremely arrogant. Though I did well on his exam, I was scared to ask questions and frankly, hated Bio 1. Good luck pre-meds.
Hardest class I've taken, but learned more relevant material here than in all of my other classes combined. Perfect for pre-meds.He prepares you for MCAT, board examinations, even clinic. I got an A, but studied at least 4-6 hours per day. The material is really interesting so that makes it easier to focus. Study groups make this class more fun.
Incredibly difficult and demanding. I took the class the first time it was offered online. It was frustrating because you couldn't work ahead. The material is actually really interesting and Dr. Julians lessons are really well made and deliver the material in a way that makes sense. Generous curve!
I took this course online and it was awful. Dr. Julian had errors in his slides, quiz questions with the wrong answers selected as correct, and tutorials that skipped around. He was rude in his emails and didn't even bother answering some students. I've never had a problem with a prof before and I thought he was terrible.
This is by far one of the most difficult classes at UF, mostly due to the sheer volume of complex material covered over only two exams. You will definitely need to be on top of things to do well. As for Dr. Julian, he seemed pretty clear in his lectures but was rather unapproachable. Overall, I'd say try to find someone else for the class first.
This is not an easy class. That being said, Dave is probably the best professor I've had at UF. He knows this material very well, and expects his students to know it just as well. He could offer office hours more than once a week, but other than that, he does a great job making you think and actually learn the material.
I took this class online over the summer. It is an extremely tough class, but Professor Julian is very knowledgeable. I did not read the text, but I wrote tons of notes while watching the lectures online. There were technical problems with the quizzes, but the TA was able to help/add extra pts if necessary.
If you're planning on going to med school, you need to take this class with Julian. He made the biology section of the mcat an absolute breeze for me because of the way he teaches/tests the material. I'm a med student at UF now and the questions on our exams are VERY SIMILAR to the style of questions he asks. Please don't be scared of his class.
Class is not EASY at all. But if you do all the assignments on time and follow the lectures then you should be okay. Definately study with a partner and ask eachother bunch of clinical questions because thats the only way you can ace this class. Definately hard but very very interesting and helpful for pre-med students.
The exams in this class are mad hard. But if you keep up with the online assignments and do above average on the exams. The curve will save your grade. But you have to be willing to put 20+ hours a week during the summer.
Exams are on an entirely different level of difficult. I do not recommend this class unless you've taken another anatomy or biology class in the past.
He is a great professor. His style of teaching is very unique and interactive. It is definitely not an easy class, meaning you will have to earn very hard to earn a good grade. The materials can be difficult at times but he curves the class at the end, so it's not that terrible.
Dr. Julian is a genuinely smart guy however he lacks empathy and is a stern individual to deal with. He really wants his students to learn and the class is a lot of material. If you keep up with the osmosis videos and study the tophat questions you should be fine. The exams are very hard. The research report is a lot of work but you get rewarded.
There are no other professors for PCB3713C so just mentally prepare yourself. You will have to teach yourself an exaggerated amount of complex material without understanding anything in class. We had to watch like 10 videos before every 2 hour lectures, WHICH MAKES ABSOLUTELY NO SENSE. You will pass even if you are failing the whole semester.
Definitely not an easy class. I feel like he makes it harder than it needs to be and he has been my least favorite professor ever. At the end of the day, you just got to get through this class.
Dave runs a great physiology class. For BME students, a lot of the physiological models are related to things like circuits to help understanding. Tests account for 50% of the grade and are fair, in-class questions account for 25% and you can get most of them right if you get all info from lectures, 25% is guaranteed from tutorials.
This is a flip-class so you watch useless lectures before class. All he does is read the lecture slides word for word. His lecture slides are not that helpful because it just a bunch of definitions. When you come to class, you answer iclicker questions that do not reflect the lecture slides. Just to top things off, he is not the nicest person.
He is rude, arrogant. He did NOT teach anything at all. All he did is reading word by word in the slide and expect us to watch 2-3 videos before class. 2hour class go through confusing questions. He will curve eventually but what's the point of coming to class, no nothing, getting curve. Walk out of this class with zero knowledge.
Extremely insensitive to personal circumstances that many other professors have been caring and made accommodations for. Horrible professor and just a mean person
Dr. Julian isn't horrible, it's just the amount of material. He expects you to understand the material on the same level as he does (which his many years of experience while you are probably new to it all). He was nice to my table because we put a lot of effort. Sit with good people, take lots of notes before, be prepared to explain your answers.
There is no need for this class to be so difficult. Lectures present the most simple form of the content. Exam questions and iClickers require you to derive complex concepts yourself out of the lectures that he just reads off of.
He is evil. He is making me a christrian again because he is the devil. Bro has too much evil in heart to be around America's youth.
he makes me giggle. he lectures really well in person, a lot better than the lectures we have to watch before class. people may think he's harsh, but he just makes lil jokes... he knows we don't know a ton of the info. really not that bad, i enjoy him tbh
Dr. Julian is the most inconsiderate professor. He won't understand any personal circumstances. He is also very condescending and never gives clearcut answers when we need help. His lecture is flipped class so we just watch video (info dump) and do MANY complex iClicker questions that make no sense. Exams are a terrible without the curve.
Very interesting class but difficult professor. Online lectures before class are him just reading of slides but in person lectures are more insightful. He emphasizes knowing the "why" of how body systems work, which helped with understanding. This does not make up for his general rudeness to the class and constant berating. Form study groups!
This is a FLIP class, which means you watch around 40 minutes to 1 hour of lecture before class. Class time is basically just answering iClicker questions which does count towards your grade. The class is pretty difficult, and he's not exactly the nicest guy, but if you put in the work you should walk away with at least a B since he curves.
Class time is almost entirely answering iClicker questions on the lectures you watch before class. The questions types on iClicker are quite similar to his exams, which are pretty hard. He's not exactly the nicest guy, and you do have to put in the work to get a good grade in his class. However, he does curve the exam and final grade.
Very tough class but know most everyone will be in the same boat as you. Pretty intense guy so try to be as prepared as possible. Class is a lot of work outside of class time so make sure to stay on top of everything. He does curve pretty generously so as long as you're above average you should be doing well.
Hardest class in BME program so far. Flipped class, prepare for iClickers every class, they drill you a LOT on the notes he provides. Big chunk of the grade are the exams, which has MCQ, Sequencer, and Model Builder section. Do NOT underestimate the exams, study in groups for both of them. Prof is also pretty rude and inconsiderate so be ready
best advice: study lectures very well before class, make sure you're ahead always. If you can, study an entire chapter in detail(ex: kidney) before it comes up in class. You will benefit more from what he says in class and clear any confusion. def a hard class, find a study buddy, put in max effort, and stick to a schedule so you don't fall behind.
The lecture videos that were expected to be viewed before class were very vague and did not go into much detail at all, while he expects us to be experts in class. I would recommend reading the textbook and asking your TA to clarify any unclear information.
PCB3713C's format of flipped class and lecture videos is unfortunately compromised by the sheer amount of material needed, and it is compounded by the fact that reexplaining topics is almost always a clearly frustrating endeavor for the professor. Nevertheless, Dr. Julian is a knowledgeable professor and adds value to the BME degree.
Great lecturer in my opinion, he cares about critical thinking and causality as opposed to memorization, and it's not really his fault the content is difficult. He curves so if you put effort in you'll probably pass with a good score. But he doesn't seem to even have a basal respect for students, and this hostility drags for the whole course.
Dr. Julian is a great professor. He know this is a tough class, but he helps you learn. It may seem that he is against you at times, but he ensures that we know everything. The iClicker questions help me understand the content. Flipped class is a bit annoying, but you will walk out of this class well prepared.
Dr. Julian is a phenomenal professor. His class is difficult as it requires you to think critically about everything physiology related. Since it is flipped classroom, be prepared to spend extensive time outside of class studying. It was challenging, but I have learned more in his class than in any other. He certainly deserves respect.
