Very concerned clear and helpful, Lots of office hours, knew a lot of the students names, even brought munchkins for everyone the the last day of class!
Confused as to why his other ratings are so bad. There has to be a mistake! He is a great professor! Probably my favorite math professor yet. Very clear lectures! Gives a really good review sheet before tests. Easy class to do well in just pay attention! He is happy to help you whenever you need it. He's hilarious and keeps the class interesting!
This professor is the greatest thing to ever happen to Stony Brook. I could go on forever about how good he is. I'm not a "math person" so the fact that I've gotten A's when I've taken Calculus shows how good he is. If you go to class and talk to him, maybe go to office hours, email him with a question, you'll do well and meet one of the best in SB
David Kahn is easily one of the best professors I've had at stony brook. I don't go to class all the time but he is so easy to understand that even just attending review sessions was enough for me. He really tries to get to know his students and is generally funny. I have taken him for MAT 123 and MAT 126 and I would definitely take him again.
The single greatest professor I've ever had the pleasure of meeting. He knows his math. The explanations are so simple and easy, anyone could learn calculus from Kahn. Although he isn't teaching MAT 127 next semester, I'm going to enroll in any class he is teaching. Anyone who wants to learn calculus while having fun, take Kahn's class.
He's a great professor. Makes you understand everything and review sheets are very helpful! I almost die of laughter when he tells jokes haha.
I've never really done well in Math at any level until I had him. He's honestly the best math teach I've had, he makes good jokes during class about the material but not to the point where it seems like he's trying too hard to be funny. Great teacher, he genuinely cares, great guy in general, would recommend him over any other math professor here.
Lectures are very clear, he takes time to make sure everyone understand the material. He does a lot of examples which really clarifies the subject matter.
His lecture is fantastic. Never boring and his explanation is clear. He is a funny professor too.
Kahn is super funny and likeable. He gives so many examples of what you learn that it's hard not to get it, and if you don't he stays after lecture to help you out. I think the thing that makes him great is that he doesn't take his class too seriously and realizes most of the students are there for prereqs, so he makes class enjoyable!
He's truly a great professor, cares about his class and his students. He's a great teacher truly.
Fantastic Professor, made class fun and the time passed quickly. Gives out homework answers in class for those who show up, but attendance is not mandatory. WebAssign and written hw, study for the exams and you'll be fine. Would take him again!!
Prof Kahn is one of the best professors I've ever had for any subjectlevel. He makes his lectures fun & interesting (rare combination). He's also VERY helpful and you can tell he REALLY cares about his students. He has a wonderful personality and was nothing but kind when I went to him with personalacademic issues. Take him. Prof Kahn, Thank you.
Wonderful. Amazing guy. Loves his students and will do anything to see them pass. I love this guy.... Crystal clear explainer. Has a passion for math!!!!!
If there's anything I've realized about his method of teaching, it's that he loves to do multiple examples so that you understand the material. While that may sound boring, it isn't. He makes sure that his students pay attention by using humor. His students also tend to sit in the first 3 rows of the classroom, so it means students WANT to learn.
Easily the best professor you can get for a MAT class at Stony.
He is definitely one of the best professor I have ever met. He really does care A LOT about his students, always checking the progress of his students during class. Whenever we have any questions about the stuff written on blackboard, he will always stop and explain everything again until we understand it. It's fun to take his class!
He is the best! That's all I can say
KAHN FOR PRESIDENT BEST PROFESSOR EVER
DAVID KAHN IS THE ABSOLUTE BEST. He is a blessing. Many students who have other professors for this course skip their original lecture and go to Kahn's lecture instead. LOVE HIM. He's such an amazing professor who actually cares about students and explains things clearly so they are easy to understand.
Kahn is the best. Always cracking jokes in class & really wants students to understand the material. Lots of practice problems in class & office hours are very helpful. Do the practice exams he posts & read his textbook for further clarification if needed. Exams are very fair & usually have a small curve. He gives you all the tools to get an A.
Professor Kahn is actually THE BEST. His exams are right from problems he practices in class. Always has midterm retakes. His explanations are simple and easy to understand. He cracks jokes in class and makes you feel like math isn't the worst thing in the world. Definitely easy to get an A in his class. Don't be afraid to ask questions!
Super easy to follow and always willing to stop and help out someone who is struggling.
by far the best teacher I have ever had at stony brook. sweet as can be, really takes the time to explain to his students the material and does countless examples. makes you really feel comfortable. so bummed he's not teaching mat125 in the spring :/
What a great guy! Very helpful with explaining the material and makes class fun with his jokes and humor. I was not strong at math during high school but Kahn made it easier to understand the material and used practice problems that helped made it click for me. A kind and humble man; he even gave out candy whenever our football team won a game!
If you don't calc with Kahn are you really calcing? Professor Kahn for life
This guy is the best! If I were to take any more math courses at SBU, I would definitely take him and recitation with TanyaLisa Agha. Believe me, these 2 are the best team to get you the high grade you can achieve.
Very clear teaching difficult math concepts. I started the semester with a different professor and switched into Kahns class and it was like night and day. Also cares about the students
I've taken this math before so it was an easy A for me. He's a fantastic teacher and makes you want to actually go to class. He's funny and extremely helpful. If you pass the first 2 tests you are guaranteed at least a C in the course if you never go again. If he is available for any math I will take him 100 out of 100 times.
Kahn is probably my favorite professor. Not only does he bond with his students personally and have a great personality, he is a great teacher and loves what he does. He will take the time to help you, 1 on 1, and wants you to get the material. Can't do better than him.
Very easy going, his lectures are a breeze despite the material being dry. He teaches concepts in a way that is very easy to grasp. He provides plenty of practice material in the form of homework, which ends up being extremely helpful.
Professor Kahn teaches so well, and you can tell that he loves what he teaches. He makes jokes during the lectures. I wish that I could take another class with him. The tests were easy if you do the practice questions but I thought that the homework was challenging.
The best math professor at SBU, he really cares about his students. He does his best to make sure all of his students understand everything he says. I would take any class he teaches!! This class has a huge curve, an 81 was an A.
Best professor ever!! He is brilliant, and is able to convey complex material in a simple easy to understand way. I am not strong in math, his explanations though make understanding math accessible. My grade is purely a reflection of his teaching. I highly recommend him. He truly cares about his students, and inspires his students to enjoy math.
Professor Kahn is an absolute gem of a professor. I came into this class without knowing anything about trigonometry or pre-calc and felt like it would be tough for me to pass, but he has a superhuman power to make math extremely easy and stress-free. Funny guy, kept lectures fun and interesting, and I learned more than I thought was possible.
Professor Kahn is one of the best professors I've ever had. He's super funny and genuinely wants you to do well in the course. If you have the option to have Professor Kahn, definitely take his class.
Such a nice guy. Lectures are recorded so you can watch them later. I would still go to class though his lectures are not dry at all. Definitely recommend!
Professor Kahn is one of the best math teachers I have ever had. He will explain every topic throughly and will take his time to make sure you understand every topic by the end of the lecture. He keeps you intrigued with his humor making it easy to pay attention and learn in his class. His tests are easy and you are sure to pass!
Great professor.
Professor Kahn is really funny, and you can tell he really cares. He teaches the material really well and always answers your questions, whether you're in the front row or the back. He really cares about you passing, and the tests tend to be on the easier side. I would really advise taking him if you could; i'm really happy with my choice.
One of the best professors I have ever had. I asked him a question once, he asked for my name and knew me the rest of the semester. Math is not my strong suit and he made it something I didn't mind going to and was getting A's on all my exams and plan to take him for 126 . He makes his lectures enjoyable, he is funny and brings in candy! Take him!
Professor Kahn is probably the most amazing professor at SBU. I suck at math but as long as you pass part 1 of the two midterms, you are guaranteed a C- for the course. Even if you dont pass the part 1 of the midterms the first time, you get to retake it on webassign which is the easiest thing. I wish he taught more classes at sbu.
grading scale was strange_good class_felt like I could learn more though
Take his class, you won't regret it.
He tells you what is going to be on test if he is making it. He is kinda creepy though. He takes girls (typically only the ones who play a sport at stony brook) and takes them out to eat with him. They are also always at his office hours. He isn't a bad guy but just strange taking girls who are barely 18 out. Made a hard final to lower our curve
Amazing.
Attend all his lectures, review what he does in class. He's a fair grader. Solve all the questions he posts from his textbook. His class is a lot of fun. HIGHLYYY recommended.
I did nothin in this class barely went showed up for lec and never made it to Res and I got a C plus in the class. I did not one homework and barely studied Passed both MC the first time around and didn't bother taking the final. got a decent score on my 1st midterm 38/49 but the 2nd one was really hard I got 2/60 but I passed the MC and was good
He's a great professor, really funny and he's extremely helpful if you ask him. Just attend his class, pay attention and do the work and you'll be solid.
Amazing guy and great professor. Watch his video lectures online and you will get an A. Explains everything very well. Also very funny.
He tries to make the tests as easy possible and generally just wants everyone to do well.
Interesting guy. Make class smoothly move. Gentle difficult level to let students learn but not upset. Online exams
Possibly the best professor I've ever had! You can't ask for a better professor than Kahn, he's funny, caring, and can make even the hardest subject easy and understandable. Everyone respects him because he's just such an awesome guy, just honestly what every professor should aspire to be. Fantastic professor! Take him for sure if you can!
Very good teacher. Conveys information accurately and simply. If you have any questions, he does a very good job answering them. Extremely fair grader. Show up and put effort in and you're guaranteed to pass.
Hes a great professor. Tests are online, homework is online. He doesnt take attendance, but I would recommend to still go to class because I stopped going for a month and saw my grade for the second test significantly less. The lowest test grade is worth 15%, second lowest 25%, and highest grade 35%. VERY FAIR GRADING
The best Professor ever. Although he is a bit fast-paced, explains everything clearly. One of the only classes I actually look forward to because of his positive energy. Don't hesitate to ask questions and try to go to every class, he actually does notice! And also gives extra credits on days with less attendance ;)
as long as you come to class and at least try, he won't fail you; there's a lot of homework though so beware
Dope dude very easy to pass
Kahn is a great professor at SBU. I hate math and this guy made me understand and begin to actually comprehend it. 2 midterms+a final but there is a curve in the class. His lectures are funny because hes always crackin jokes and he always talks about SBU sports. (which is why he LOVES the athletes so much) I am taking him again next semester!
Super great guy! Funny and keeps lectures engaging!
Kahn is the only teacher I would take at 8:30am as taking stat with him was a great decision. He always tries to help students get the best grade possible and is there for giving us review sessions. He is also great at conveying the material and gives extra credit on tests for showing up occasionally so don't miss class!
Really amazing professor, love this guy, I recommend that you take him, his the best of the best.
Brilliant Professor, the best at Stony Brook. He's so caring and accessible, even to students who aren't necessarily in his lecture
amazing! He's very clear, his ways of teaching are not confusing at all, and he's very funny. He never looks miserable teaching and he cares about his students when he sees that they sit in the front and participate. Also - his homeworks (when he makes them) aren't easy, but they make sense and theyre straight to the point which is good :)
Professor Kahn is by far the best! He is the nicest, most caring professor there. He's always willing to help and wants all his students to do well. I enjoyed going to Kahn's class, he's so funny!
Although I didn't go to class very often because I knew the material, the times I went he made the topics crystal clear. If you're not a math person then he will definitely help you. He makes everything so easy to understand.
He is honestly just amazing. Makes lecture very easy to understand. Highly recommended :))
Professor Kahn made learning calc super interesting and fun. He's a really funny guy and he is very approachable. He is always willing to answer any questions during lectures and I really like his teaching style. I would take his class again if I could.
The best math teacher I ever had, my first A in math after 10 years. Thanks
Such a great prof. Always there for you when you need it. Will give you extensions on homework if needed. Good lecturer, funny guy. Really knows what he is talking about
He's hilarious. Every class is a joy to attend.
He is a great professor! I took him in Fall 2016 and I do not regret taking the class! Just do all the homework assigned to you on Web Assign, go to all the classes and do math problems similar to the ones he assigns by rote. You will be guaranteed to pass the class.
good guy. you can make a good connection with him and it'll help you out when you have questions or need extensions. super easy going but won't let you take advantage. really funny and keeps class fun. probably the most understandable math prof.
The man. The myth. The legend. Please, take his course. The textbook is a free PDF. He is so good at explaining and I honestly have nothing bad to say about him. He helped me understand difficult math, and he's really on your side. He want to see his students succeed. If you don't get into his lecture, they're all posted online as videos.
Professor Kahn is the best professor I have ever had! He genuinely cares about your grades and is willing to work with you about any issues you have, if you talk to him. He is extremely accessible outside of class and very easy to talk to. Math is fun and smooth with having Prof. Kahn as a professor. Thanks
He cracks jokes during the lectures and sometimes ends class early, which is great. He does move through lectures quickly sometimes, but you can ask him anything and he will help you. He gives a good amount of homework; however, you have plenty of time to complete it. Exams are not bad if you go to the lectures and do lots of practice problems.
AMAZING he really cares about the success of his students if youre an athlete take his class, you will pass
Kahn is funny and interesting and made me actually want to go to an 830am precalc lecture all semester. He explains everything very clearly and answers as many questions as possible throughout. He walks around the whole hall and checks in with everyone, so sit in an aisle seat or near the front for maximum interaction. 10/10 great guy
Explains everything very clearly in lectures, and is funny and interesting. He made me want to go to precalc lecture at 830am for an entire semester. Answers all questions and walks around between problems to check in with students from all over the hall. The textbook is free and online bc he believes in free resources. Absolute king of a professor
Kahn is an absolute gem. He's a fantastic lecturer and is clear about what will be on his exams. He's no nonsense and very to the point about the course content. If he's teaching it, it's going to be on the exam, and you will know that.
Kahn is very clear in his lectures and goes a suitable pace for his students to understand the concept.
Kahn is a rare math teacher who makes sure you aren't left behind. Find him outside of class and he will break the material down to make sure you understand as much as possible. His study guide is no nonsense: it perfectly replicates his test format. If I hadn't switched out of stem I would have taken more of his classes. Lectures are fantastic.
David Kahn is funny and just overall a great teacher. Everything he says makes sense and his tests are very similar to the material he teaches in class. We Stan our King David
Professor Kahn is the best professor at Stony Brook. He is very intelligent and wants all of his students to succeed. He's also really funny. He won't go in detail on information you won't be tested on so the material is very clear.
THE FREAKING GOAT !! The best man employed by SBU! Love this man, take him! #KAHNYAY
Great professor. Actually gets to know his students and helps them achieve academic goals. Lectures are easy to follow.
Explains really well the topics and answers questions clearly. Very funny professor and I skipped my actual professor to sit in his lectures...
This guy is amazing my favorite professor ever. He really cares about the students and looks out for them. He knows everyone is stressed and doesn't want to overwhelm everyone. Knows how to make people take a deep breath and just relax. Love the man. Best professor at Stonybrook hands down. I wish he taught MAT127. I am sad to never see him again
I have dyscalculia and after putting in a lot of time studying and going to the learning center along with his very clear lectures I was able to get my first A in math. He is also the only math teacher I've had that didn't brush me off for asking simple questions. He helped calm my anxiety too and I've never even spoken directly to him!
If I ever had to take another math class again, I would definitely want him as my professor. He understood that most people there didn't want to be there/weren't math students and made the class as simple as possible while still giving us all the information we needed. Plus he's just a really fun, easygoing guy. I would definitely recommend him.
Professor Kahn is a very good processor as he knows who his students are, most of us are math or physics or chem majors and he truly tries to make the class accessible and interesting. My only complaint is that other students use up the beginning of class time talking about nonsense because he is so talkative and easygoing.
this dude is the amarante of the math department. he may seem tough but hes actually really caring and nice if you give him the chance to get to know you. hes an excellent teacher and he really takes the time to explain. im still in the middle of the semester, but i love his class and i know im going to get a good grade bc he explains things well.
A lot of students like him because he is willing to interact with them. The class is an easy A. His personality and teaching method are a 5, but this man talks too much in class and wastes time. Don't take him if you have limited time due to other responsibilities and don't want to waste 30 minutes in class just to hear him talk about the weather
Professor Kahn is an excellent teacher, no doubt about it. He explains everything well. However, with the online exams, they are very difficult to do well on because they are very short (15 questions) and have no partial credit. If one small error is made the whole question is wrong. Paper exams would be greatly preferable.
David is the real gem of the math dept. Genuinely cares about students and is an amazing teacher. He also knows full well that college is hard and tries to make it easier on us. He is VERY generous with the curve and drops 5/20 homework grades. 100% recommend, will be taking him again next semester.
Amazing professor just study for the exams be on top of homework and you will be fine! His lectures are the best!
Hands down Kahn is really amazing. He has a very hilarious / sarcastic attitude so take any criticisms with a grain of salt. Despite this class being online, he loved to interact with us all on zoom. Lectures were tolerable. Lowest 5 HW's are dropped. I wouldn't take it again because I'm bad at math, but love Kahn. If you're dedicated this is an A.
Prof. Kahn is the first one whose been able to help me comprehend math well. If I had to take another math class at SBU, I'd 100 percent want to take it with him. Truly amazing!
Great teacher! Extremely fair with grading!
He's amazing. Do yourself a favor and take him because SBU is a soul crushing school in the beginning and he'll make your first semester easier. He explains things clearly and has a great personality. Definitely want to take him again.
Professor Kahn is funny and laid back. A lot of his lecture is spent by him talking to students about random things, but I personally liked that because he wasn't so uptight, and more chill. The class is quite easy, and there isn't much homework. The tests were reasonable, but the final is a bit tough so make sure you study for that!
He might be a good math professor, but I would recommend against taking AMS 104 if you only need a tech credit. Lectures are very dry and he takes forever to explain how to work Excel. His TA's are inconsistent in grading and don't provide enough useful feedback. He is a nice person though, but the class itself just isn't up to my expectations.
Generally unprepared in teaching this course. He would encounter problems he did not know how to fix during lectures. Later assignments seemed to be made in a rush. Was not very good at explaining concepts that were relevant to the course. He often went on tangents which made it difficult to follow his lectures.
Was a very easy class if you attend lecture and do your work.
As someone who came back to school after a long break and hasn't seen math for over 7 years I have to say Professor Kahn really saved me. I was so worried about not being able to pick up the material but he teaches it in a way that makes it easy to understand and learn. If you put in the time and work you will definitely do well in his class!!
Just dont. Hes horrible and unfair! Makes his in person classes take 2 midterms while his online only needs to take one. Hes also been very much of an a**hole. Hes always aggressive with his students. He has 100% changed!!! He used to be a good prof but idk what happened, so DONT BELIEVE ANY REVIEWS PRIOR TO FALL 2021
Professor Kahn has really made calculus a joy to learn. His explanations are thorough and understandable. The examples he uses in class are similar to what shows up on exams, so there are no surprises. You can tell he actually enjoys teaching and is amazing at what he does. It truly shows. Tries to help his students to best of his ability.
Simply teaches concept and what you need to know. If you go to class you'll be fine- can also watch live virtually. Chill prof- with occasional quizzes and paper HW every few weeks in recitation. The only thing is, is that the online portion of the midterms SUCKED!! The in-person was easy, and the final is in person. BUT BEWARE OF 2 LUMEN TESTS
Yes he can teach well but this man has a terrible attitude. Gave me a B- claiming I never did any of the homework assignments and that was my average?? Never got under a 90 for any of the exams/ midterms. Confronted him and he grudgingly gave me an A- and insinuating I should be extremely grateful for it? SO hostile and rude.
Prof Kahn gave me a hard time when I would email him and ask him questions, he was very rude. His final was extremely hard to pass and most students didn't do well.
He's overall a good lecturer and teacher. His lecture are at a good pace and comprehensible. When he gives a question for the students to do he will come around and try his best to help you. Exams were fair in my opinion but he can be rude when responding to emails or just not respond at all.
Definitely take AMS104 to learn excel and for TECH SBC. As long as you go to class, follow what he does, and do your assignments on time you'll be fine. We had 5 assignments and a midterm and final project. His instructions can sometimes be unclear, and even though attendance isn't part of the grade he sometimes gives EC to those who go
I think Prof Kahn's lectures were explained well and not very difficult. He wants people to do good and pass and I think his jokes and sarcasm made the class enjoyable, even if they were slightly harsh. Hw was manageable and overall not a stressful class.
Professor Kahn is a good teacher. If you want to learn you should attend his lectures, they are very helpful. Make sure to go over his recorded lectures if you miss class and you will pass this class easily.
It's an easy class to pass only because the material isn't difficult to learn. But he's not a good teacher.
Professor Kahn was effective at teaching the material and exams were fair. You can tell that he wants everyone to do well.
I took a SYNCHRONOUS online course with him and never did he teach. The TA taught every single lecture and although he was good - the exam ofc reflected what Kahn wanted us to know and not what the TA had spent a lot of time emphasising.
loved him great guy, great professor makes the class very easy and understandable
Easy class just attend/watch all the lectures and follow along with your own spreadsheet. Not a lot of homework and is lenient with the grading.
If it looks like you're signed up for Kahn you might get him or you might be taught by a TA. If you want him, he posts his lectures on Blackboard and the notes that go with it. When a test is coming up he posts practice problems from his book which are helpful. There's also 10% extra points if you finish the webassign 48 hrs early.
Just watch the lectures, pay close attention to detail, hand in all your work on time (there is usually 1 week or more to hand in work) I used to finish every homework either on the same day or in 2 different days splitting the work, he gives enough details for the assignments. I liked it. 100% recommend.
I felt like the lectures were not enough to do the assignments that he gave, but maybe that's just me. Super strict about deadlines even though its a simple class. Make sure you plan out all your emergencies ahead of time (even the ones you can't predict!) so that you don't miss the deadlines in this class. Also very creepy towards the girls...
He's very knowledgable + curves more than he should. im not blonde student & he was still kind to me answered my emails, etc. even w/o properly knowing me. He has dry humor and in todays society that is often misinterpreted I don't know how people believe anonymous statements its quite sad that someones career can be tarnished off of such things.
David does a great job at teaching you what you need to know. If you attend the lectures you will do fine on the exam and if you need extra help then the recitation does help since they are not mandatory. The only thing that is a slight put off is his interactions with some of the female students. I won't go into too much detail since others have.
Class is easy. Homework is easy but can be time consuming. There is one group project which was a bit difficult because it was an online class.
He posts lectures online, and attendance isn't mandatory. Bi-weekly quizzes, weekly hws. Quizzes are difficult, especially since it's in WebAssign (Format matters, no partial credit). But they're weighted the same as hw. His lectures are easy to follow if you pay attention. Final is always super easy. If you fail this class, it's your fault.
Do yourself a favor and take professor Kahn. I had him for MAT125 and 126. You don't have to go to any of the lectures nor the recitations. To put into perspective you could fail EVERY quiz and the final, but still pass because of the curve. Focus on the homeworks and do them early to get a 10% bonus. There's no way you can fail his class tbh.
there are no midterms in this class only quizzes, homeworks and one final. class was very easy and the final was easy.
Professor Kahn definitely knows what he's doing. Unlike other Calc classes, he only teaches what you need to know on exams - not unnecessarily difficult content. He's nice and he's a teacher that you'll actually understand.
Great teacher, straightforward teaching, wastes no time. Creates quiz and final problems so I recommend practicing his problems in lecture. I had a diff teacher but she followed his lectures b/c he's big boss man for MAT 125. But he clearly has something for younger girls which is creepy so beware ..
Absurd how high his rating is. To his character, he self-obsessed, short tempered, and weird toward female students. He is weirdly flirty and gives special attention to attractive freshman (weird), and he is NOT friendly toward accommodating neurodivergent students. Spent more time ranting about his accomplishments than helping students. Boo.
David kahn is an amazing professor. Knows his stuff. Keeps it straightforward and simple. If you fail his class its YOUR fault. He's the GOAT
great prof, first time i actually understood math. great attention to detail when explaining how to solve problems, best if you asked questions during class so he can help right away. easy to contact through email.
