I love this man, he is so funny! He sponsered my major.

Kaun is not a professor that likes to teach large classes such as Econ 1, He is more of a teacher that will help you engage in a subject in a smaller setting. After having him for econ 1 I hated him then I had him for 137 and it changed my opinion of him
Great old school style teacher. Discussions are very stimulating and intense.
not bad definitaly has an odd style
Kaun has difficulty with large classes; I agree with the earlier comment that he would be better for the upper division. In any case, he is very willing to engage students in office hours, and go into greater depth.

Worst professor I've had here. Incredibly closed-minded. Doesn't facilitate discussion.
This is a real eccentric dude. He's cool in his own way but he does have some weird quirks. He is actually useful in lecture so actually go to them.
he can be boring sometimes, he can be interesting sometimes. i agree that he'd be better with a smaller class. his exam questions are often vague and ambigious at times. he's a fair teacher.
He complained to much about the Econ department, doesn't seem like he likes being a part of it. Also his test are too ambiguous and his syllabus is just as unclear. I would never take a class with him again.
he is an ****. very hard. and very unfair
Even the grad students can teach microecon better than E. Kaun (get it?? "E-Kaun"???), so I recommend taking Econ 1 over the summer instead, or with a different professor if possible. Avoid this dude at all costs.
can't teach really, very hard to understand...pretty much have to teach yourself...exams are unclear, my advice try to get another econ 1 professor.
worst class ever
Easy, interesting, fun teacher if you go to class and read the boook you will do fine. His exams are a little weird, but very short and easy if you know what your doing.
He is the worst teacher i have ever had, i would never take any of his classes again.
never did HW or went to lecture or section, studied for test about a 1/2 hour before and got a B+, so thats cool, but he's boring and the tests are incredibly ambiguous.
he sucks...can't teach at all
rarely went to class and still got an A-...easy stuff
Kaun just plain old sucks. When you ask him a question, he wont even look you in the eye, and he cuts you off in the middle of your sentence.DONT THIS CLASS!!!It is a waste of your expensive college education!
I didn't really understand him. It was all good thought because I read the book, got an A, and didn't have to take the final. This of course was from studying and reading that boring damn book...yep gotta admit he is not the best.
He tries to be funny in his letcures and exams. He is very confusing and he doesnt assign hw so you tend to do bad in his class. He moves too fast over each topic. His exams are extrememly hard. Never take him!
Prof. Kaun, Is one of the worst teachers i've ever had. He's very unhelpful, he's rude, and cannot do simple math if his life depended on it. Most people cheat in his class and if you buy his book he'll give you extra credit.
He is the worst teacher I have almost ever had. He is one of the main reasons why I'm not an econ major anymore. He was so boring and I never went to class. Pretty much I wasted how ever much money it costs to take 5 units.
If you can analyze what he's saying and understand his language, he makes things *REALLY* interesting, plus he gives second chances.
Has Kaun changed? Or have students changed? Had him years ago (Intermed. Micro). He was the reason I majored in econ & later got my PhD. He was passionate about teaching, made classes interesting, & was very helpful IF you showed some effort.
he makes **** remarks that have nothing to do with the coursework
Mixes his lectures with unnecessary stories and jokes that do not make the material any clearer. I read the book, took the tests and got the hell out of there. What a crazy old man.
Very funny and sarcastic man that won't put up with most of the idiots that seem to think they can take advantage of his sincerity. Read the book and take the all to simple tests. Please, if you can't pass his class, then you have no use in the UC system.
The worst teacher ever!!! the midterm never related with the lecture!!! TA sucks.......
this professor should be fired, does not deserve to teach anymore, his lectures does not help you for his midterms or final, make sure you study on your own if your taking him, his midterms and final are not too hard, but just study the vocab for the class
Spouts liberalism at every opportunity, which impairs his ability to teach economics with an unbiased, objective consideration of the advantages and disadvantages of various systems. This lack of perspective leaves you without 3/4 of the facts.
I hate him. I really do. If "you can pass without ever coming to class" (his reader), then why can't i just pay for testing fees and textbooks (a couple hundred) instead of a couple grand for the 5 unit class? He's a f**king idiot. His book sucks. He makes me rethink the value of an education.
This teacher sucks, his tests have nothing to do with the book and he rambles on about nothing
I didn't think I would be able to deal with his sarcasm, but Kaun is basically a nice guy and dedicated as hell. You don't have to conceal your political bias to be a good teacher— Welcome to college, kids. The tests are completely possible. Just do the problem sets and stop whining.
I aced every on of the midterms, but I still would NOT recommend this crazy teacher to anyone. He is incredibly self-absorbed and not at all helpful. Do not waste your time going to his office hours. He'll kick you out after thirty seconds. The guy should not be a teacher.

Hes not that bad, but really does ramble on about nothing. There is no point in coming to class, unless you want to hear him talk**** on Bush, or tell some stupid joke which doesnt relate to the class. His class makes you feel like you really did waste your money coming to college.
Kaun is all right, you dont have to go to lecture whatsoever, and as long as youre not an econ major, you should be stoked on that****. read the book and ace the class
He's pretty full of himself, but he is not too bad. Tests may be very confusing if you don't read your book. Attending his lecture is not really to prepare for the exam but just to sit there...
What to say about Kaun...you might not want to take him if you are are not interested in Econ. I would recomend going to his lectures instead of reading the book. The tests and bonus Q's are more about his lectures than anything else. Just be sure you know the terms and you will do fine.
I understand the frustrations of my peers, but come on. Make it work. We're big kids now. This class is completely passable. I think his lectures are interesting even if they don't have a lot to do with the tests...read the book, pass the tests. Attend lectures, learn something.
Kaun is great, you just have to have faith to get through his classes. He is borring but funny at times. He is hated by conservatives and often takes on strait edged people in class, very entertaining! I always get an A, to pass the test simnply peer into the mind of Mighty Kaun!
This was the easiest class I've taken since coming to college and I love Kaun's laid bake attitude about coming to class. C'mon, you only need to get an 80% to get an A and he drops your lowest test score. However, I would warn that the class was so easy that is preventing me from learning much.
I really love Kaun. I got an A despite having mono and missing class for a MONTH. He is good about helping you learn concepts. Definitely important if you're majoring in econ.
I was actually a TA for his class. I never took it, but from a TA perspective he was pretty easygoing (if you were thinking about TAing). In terms of student reactions, they weren't great... but he is quite easy as long as you study a bit on your own.
Knows what he's talking about, but not always terribly clear. I didn't show up alot and still got an "A", but I knew the material pretty well before I took the class, so don't necessarily expect the same thing. He's definitely got a sense of humor, so if he seems seriously angry there is definitely a good chance that he isn't upset at all.
Whatever class he's teaching in, do not...I mean do not ever take him!!! He's nice but his tests are very vague and tends to go off topic from time to time. You get the chance to buy his notes from the bookstore but that doesn't help much either. Avoid him at all times, I learned more from reading the book than from him.
Class is so easy; I dont understand how people can think his class is difficult. He likes to go off on tangents, but his notes are pretty much whats gonna be on the tests. Make sure to read the journal articles in his reader and do the media item responses. Just make sure not to talk to your neighbor so much; he hates that.
This guy does not like people talking in the back so dont sit there unless you want to be called out in fornt of the class. Overall very easy considering his grading scale just show up to class and follow his notes.
This guy is so funny. Well... not really but at least he's not boring. Hes really easy to understand.
Interesting material, great lecture/group discussions. Just don't get on his bad side... which consists of pretty much no late work, period.
Stay on his good side, don't piss him off and he'll reward you.
100B & Capital Economics, tests are tricky, feel free to ask plenty of questions, definetly a challenging college level course
his test are the worst....soooo understanding the test is harder than the test itself.
I dont know if they still offer this class now, but if you hate writing, and still need that GE satisfied, this is the class to take. He does not require a lot of writing, just a few pages, NO BS.
I loved microeconomics til I took his class and had to figure out the logic behind his confusing as hell tests... avoid him...first day of class we barely talked about economics...ended up hearing the story of why dogs aren't allowed on the UCSC campus anymore
by far the worst professor i have ever had at ucsc! always promoting his own books and picking on students to purposely embarrass them. quizzes purposely confusing and difficult, not willing to help students at all. i'm never taking econ again because of him!
Kaun is an extremely interesting and unique professor. Everyone complains about his tests because he doesnt just want you to learn Mathematical equations, rather, he wants you to be able to apply the concepts to the real world. Anyone with common sense can do just fine. He breaks the boring mold and broadens your education. Plus, he is a hoot.
His exams are ambiguous and vague (i.e. his matching portion of the test will have two perfectly valid answers, you just have to figure out which one he wants). He enjoys speaking about himself. He also goes off on a lot of tangents. He wastes a lot of class time lecturing not about the material but about students who are talking in class.
Kaun is a great guy. Fun, enthusiastic, extremely easy, and best of all unbiased. His tests are easy if you can figure out what he's asking. To solve this just do the practice tests and you'll get a feel for his style. The class was interesting, educational, and freakishly easy. Take it to get rid of an IS or understand the world better.
David is a personality that brings a very different light to economics. he is another side of a very important coin. if you get hung up on people with personality or a rough style - you wont learn. But if you go in with an open mind and get past the rough exterior - you will find a very thoughtful man with good ideas to teach.
I thought he was a good teacher. Lectures were in engaging (which is impressive, given the subject matter), and he brought in outside materials, like videos. Tests were incredibly easy. If you go to section, your grade gets boosed. Only A+ I've gotten here so far. I look forward to taking more classes with ihm in the future.
Do not like his teaching style...papers are due every week and there are no tests or final. Makes attendance mandatory but does not count it in your grade. Talks a lot about himself and his personal life.
The class was very easy. But his quizzes were kind of vague so know your material logically. When you get stuck use an logical approach to eliminate possibilies or discusses with him. He is very up beat. You dont have to attend section or lecture (except on test days). If you have problems seriously attend the sections for help. Easy Class!!
Clear, told you exactly what he wanted you to know. Gave all lecture notes as a reader and tests were straight forward. Taught econ very clearly.
Kaun is the man! Very easy class, very interesting lectures that really fit into the labor world. Go to class, don't get on his bad side, and you'll have an easy A for sure. Tends to go off tangent which gets boring, but for the most part you feel like its all connected.
short tempered, hard to understand. tests make no sense whatsoever. Gets overly angry over smallest things. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS
He's a really nice teacher, has a genuine passion for the subject, but he has no tolerance for disrespect or childishness in class and will kick you out if you talk during class. He has great teaching skills, but his tests are very hard.
He has high expectations. So expect to learn, not an easy A. I heard complaints that he talks about himself. His stories help you remember and relate to key concepts. I.e., the story about his nephew who listened to the same CD over and over deals w/ diminishing marginal returns. And his dog not allowed on campus story is about a social trap.
he makes his exams ambiguous as to fail the students with several perfectly correct answers. dont join this class
After four years of college, it was wholly refreshing to have an instructor who didn't take crap from his students. He was very entertaining and totally made the class worth taking, especially since I didn't really want to. Tests were simple if you can tell an obvious joke from a serious answer. But don't think you can just slack off--try to learn.
Tests are extremely stupid, the answers are often the end result or side effect of the vocab, never a straight forward answer.
Intriguing class structure. attendance is absolutely mandatory. You can literally just take the 4 odd tests to pass this class, however David puts a whole lot of effort into his lectures, and uses interesting examples to drive the points. I never read the book or went to section, but was able to understand the material straight from him.
Kaun's class was unlike any other class I've ever taken. His exams require you to KNOW the material and apply it, versus just spitting out a response. While sometimes he goes off topic, his lectures are entertaining and he shares amusing stories. Definitely recommend his class, if only for the experience. Econ is cool too.
I have taken Econ 1 and 137 with this professor and both have been needlessly confusing in terms of requirements. Study his notes in the reader and try to think of what answer he would have put on his incredibly vague multiple choice tests. While he might not take**** from his students, he also criticizes them for asking good or bad questions.
he puts a lot of effort into his lectures thats a big plus but I believe he had bad attitude
He likes to go off on ridiculous tangents and has trouble getting back on track. Class is definitely more difficult for students who haven't had econ experience. His temper is shortening as the quarter progresses. He got upset with students who sat on the end of the row, merely because they choose those seats. Do extra credit if offered.
Lots of tangents, ridiculous tests, seems to be going senile.
Good luck, if you can figure out what Kaun is asking! This class had TONS of potential that was wasted away by Kaun's ranting, raving, and incoherent rambling. I did gain some insight from this class but Kaun is about 10 years past his prime if you ask me. Time to hang it up!!! Tests are EXTREMELY ambiguous and colloquial, almost pointless.
A very opinionated left wing teacher. Not afraid to tell you what he thinks and why. This is no way to teach, but a great way to indoctrinate soft little minds. He WILL belittle several people in class throughout the course. This was my favorite part about him.
LISTEN TO THIS RATING! Kaun is hands down the worst college professor I have ever had. Except for the videos he shows, lectures are completely useless. READING IS A MUST! He creates the strangest, most unfair tests I have ever seen with only 4 questions (get one wrong automatic C). Shoots down any questions asked. Makes no sense
he is the worst teacher ever. there is no point of explaining how bad he is. just see his rate. don't bother taking him
As you can see the rating from below. You should know by now. He is the MOST and the WROST teacher EVER! he can't teach at all Stay away if you need to, but if you have to take him good luck!
Great professor, he is old and disorganized, but never boring. He knows his stuff when it comes to economics, and does not like people to disagree. If you can get past the details of character and not get hung up-he is an awesome teacher...the only econ professor at UCSC with a heart for anything outside of 'economic factors'!! I'd take again!
This teacher is one of the worst professors I have ever met. His quizzes are awkward and don't actually test your competency on the subject, but how much you think like the professor. He is self-absorbed, arrogant, and will spend a large portion of the class admiring himself. He even jams his own article into the reader. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
Not a very good teacher at all.Quizzes are tricky because he adds dumbass humor to his answer choices, thus you can know all material and still fail. workload pretty lite though, 3 short midterms, 4 short hw ass. and short final...this class will lighten ur load but could become pain in the ass
A terrible professor and human being in general. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Listen to all these ratings- he does not care about his students, is unknowledgable, and his tests are based solely on his skewed sense of humor. Do not take any of his classes, even if they are the last resort. Seriously. You have been warned.
people who said that tests in this class were hard are ridiculous. if you memorize the bold definitions next to key terms in the text book, maybe. understand things conceptually and their easy. he stresses that attendance is not mandatory and tells you not to come if you don't want to be there- and definitely regulates on that...pretty awesome guy.
All of the things this professer said were so confusing. It's supposedly not for econ majors but it was all over my head.
Easy A- if you don't go do 2nd half of year sections. You have to get into his mind to understand his tests but after the 1st one it wasn't hard to figure out, just read the book and translate definitions to the way he thinks. I don't think i learned much, after taking this class i failed my first macro midterm which was mostly micro concepts
Plz do not bother taking this class with this professor. Worst professor ever. If ppl say that he is an awesome professor and his exams are easy if you just learn his sense of humor, well that person has the worst and dry sense of humor. like the kid below me said, "u wont learn anything in his class" AVOID HIM
If you have the opportunity to take a class he is teaching with another professor, I HIGHLY suggest you do so.
this professor is one of the worst i have ever seen. He is a very self centered and will not listen to other people's point of view. Not an easy person to work with.
All of these bad ratings come from whiny children who have never had to conceptualize material. Kaun is highly knowledgeable, and has a fresh (non-Chicago style) approach to economics that is surprisingly rare at UCSC.If you are a terrible student, he will hate you; and, if you are a good student, he will love you.
Professor Kaun is an enigma. He's not very clear in lecture but you absolutely must listen to them in order to do well on his odd exams. Odd because they don't test your understanding of the material, they test you knowing his understanding of the material. The subject material is quite interesting if you're an econ major but prepare to be bored
David Kaun is by far the most entertaining Professor I've ever had at UCSC. While he is incredibly grouchy, and kicks students out of lecture frequently, he is still an amazing lecturer. It's nice to learn about economists other than Adam Smith for once. After the bombardment of quizzes in the beginning, this class is almost no work.
Kaun is my favorite professor so far at UCSC.Take a class from him if your actually interested in the material, and are there to learn. He is funny, and at times seems a bit scatter-brained.Just ask him to clarify, and dont be put off by his blunt responses, which are not personal attacks. He expects common courtesy, otherwise you'll be asked to leave.
Can be funny at times, but is crass and rude. Disrespectful towards students and has the demeanor of a dictator. Don't question him even if he is wrong, this you will only getting yelled at. He sometimes forgets his hearing aids and what he is lecturing on. I had to argue with him for weeks to get credit on an assignment he had misplaced.
Talks about his political agenda more than he does economics. Lecture notes are sloppy and unorganized and hard to understand. Has a habit of going off tangent 80% of the time. Just go on the class website often and go over the exams for an easy A-. But overall this guy is offensive, annoying, and sloppy.
He's a great professor, very refreshing. I guess a lot of people dont appreciate his sense of humor because they just dont get it, but thats their loss. Unless you've got a huge stick up your butt, he's hilarious. He really cares about his students and wants them to do well.
Kaun is straight forward and blunt. He will kick you out of class for being disruptive and he will call you out for dumb questions but he has a great sense of humor. LOVES the arts which really enhanced the class. Tests are easy if you read, and there isn't that much reading. Drops lowest midterm grade of 3. Highly recommend this class.
Terrible. Worst teacher I have ever had. His class was beyond easy but lectures were boring and watching him teach was one of the most painful experiences of my life.
His lectures and notes are somewhat interesting but often doesn't adhere to the test. The tests are based 100% on the textbook!! easy easy easy class if you just read the book.
His lectures are most of the time irrelevant with the class material. He constantly explains his political views and insults the opposing political view.Learning from the book and basically the whole concept of economy will not suffice getting a good grade in the class, you need to get in his head.
do not take a class with david kaun. even his presence is irritating. this man should not be teaching. you will not learn a thing in his class and his exams don't test your knowledge, they test how well you can get inside his mind.
David Kaun is the worst instructor I've ever had. His lectures will never help you on his tests or in real life, and his tests are not based on tangible material. By all means take this class if you're into all that political and economic stuff, but if you're not into wasting your time AND money, please do not take David Kaun.
While he's a little stuck in his ways, David Kaun is incredibly knowledgable and well versed in Economics. He goes on tangents but will put those tangents on tests, he's not above trying to trick those students who don't attend class! All you have to do is show up and don't get offended. I really enjoyed him and the class!
Don't take this class for a GE. I'm a straight A student and study for this class the same way as my others, but I'm still pulling a C- average on his exams. Kaun's tests are ambiguous and he definitely expects too much out of intro students. Half the class fails his midterms and the class. Do microecon with another prof.
Do not take this class, his tests are so confusing... It's more of his opinion type answers, and so far I've failed both midterms even though I've attended all his lectures, read all the chapters needed, and work through hw problems
Midterms look easy, like your old 5th grade vocab quiz, but once you actually go through them, it's as if you've walked through alice in wonderland, having no clue what you've just taken, only to see you got a bad grade. Do not take this class. No matter how hard you study chances are you will fail. it's a hit or miss.
If you are an idiot and can't use the process of elimination then you will probably find his tests very confusing. If not then you are in for a quarter-long cruise. He gives extra credit on almost every exam and the exams are definitely on the easy side in terms of breadth of material covered.
Kaun is a pretty funny guy and has done a lot of cool things in his life. In his class his tests are pretty hard you have to be able to understand his humor and writing style rather than the material. Reading the book is kind of helpful but studying the reader and attending sections are the ways to get by this class. Definitely not an easy A class.
He can be entertaining and surely has lived a remarkable life, however this leads to him going off on tangents. He hates it when students leave or play on computers. Tests are hard since only 1 page with vocab but in his definitions and wry humor.
If you put the effort toward studying and attending lecture, you will do well.
Terrible lecturer. USE THE TEXTBOOK! His jokes in class are worth attending for, but his notes are incomprehensible. If you read the textbook or at least the key terms you will do better than if you attended class. He is great at responding to emails and great in office hours. Caring guy and wants his students to succeed.
Listen to me! DO NOT TAKE HIM if you love yourself. I actually like the material of this class, but taking this class with this old dude was torturous. He insults everyone in class and talks about how smart he is etc. His exams are absolutely ridiculous! The questions are so vague. If you know how to read one's mind, yeah go and take it!
Kaun is a great professor who has no patience for students wasting his time. he absolutely hates teaching lower division courses, so any review from one of his econ 1 classes will be incredibly low. take an upper division class with him for easy exams and no final, as well as some interesting stories.
Kaun is terribly misunderstood. I highly recommend this class to Economics students that are looking for an enjoyable class to take. The workload is regular but not difficult by any means. This class will be one of the few I can say I truly appreciated.
Hands down the worst professor I've had at UCSC. He took EVERYTHING personally; when people left to go the bathroom he would call them out in front of a giant lecture hall full of people and belittle them. When I tried to offer him constructive criticism on his badly written textbook, he responded with hostility. Avoid him at all costs.
I can understand why a lot of people don't like him, but I personally love him. He's the only passionately liberal Econ prof, for one thing, which puts him head and shoulders above the rest of the department. Kaun is the least boring prof I've ever had. He has so much intelligence and enthusiasm that it spills over onto you. Exams are NOT HARD.
Terrible
Professor Kaun is the reason why I majored in Economics. He is a great professor, is funny, and will point out stupid questions and kick rude people out. The class is extremely easy, I got an A+ and skipped quite a few lectures. Exams have obvious wrong answers (sometimes funny) that you can eliminate right away.
Kaun is great. He's not easy so don't expect his class to be -you need to attend lecture. His questions are odd but they're designed to make you think. If you love ECON, you'll love Kaun.
David is the worst teacher I have ever taken! His tests are all based on his own interpretation. I asked for his help and he was very rude. Yes, he's entertaining, but from my first encounter with him he didn't seem interested in helping his students.
Your words against his. You'll lose if it's different.
I submit. I've been with this professor for over a year and I've finally given in. He's terrible. Trust me when I say this. I only wish I said it sooner. He is retiring very soon.
I submit. I'm tired of defending him. I've been with this professor for over a year and I've finally given in. He's terrible. Trust me when I say this. I only wish I said it sooner. He is retiring very soon.
You better know how to read this ass's mind if you want to get an A. His tests are so weirdly worded, nothing's a textbook straightforward definition, it's his obscure definition that makes sense in his head. Also he's very rude and inconsiderate.
David is a little complicated, but this class was not hard for me. You have to learn how he thinks and speaks to pass his 4 tests. He drops the lowest one. NO FINAL! His lectures may be long, but he's very passionate about the topic. Don't question him EVER, and you'll be fine. Do the extra credit assignments and go to section (only 6 required).
The course is really easy and interesting. The course is consist of four midterm, the lowest score from the first three midterms is dropped. NO FINAL!!!! He randomly takes attendance during lecture. He doesn't like students coming in late or talking during lecture, gets really annoyed. Gives you extra credit for going to art museums.
Super easy, 80% of the class was never there. You take group exams, which guarantees you a B+ a higher. Drops one exam, no final. The fact this is an UD elective makes it the easiest you can take, everyone else complaining took it for all the wrong reasons or just whine in general. Yeah things are worded differently, same concept though.
Class was SUPER boring, didn't really learn anything new, all the concepts were basically introductory macro/micro economics. 80% of the class didn't show up. 4 "group tests" no final. Don't ever question him! He's rude and doesn't really care for student input! Just sit there and take the test you'll come out with a B+ or better....I know I did.
Its been a decade since I took it, but it was one of my favs at UCSC. The Price of Greatness is something I'll never forget. He had us watch Idiocracy as a cautionary tale after his Econ 1 students were cheating, oh what foresight he had. It all came true. Thank you for an unforgettable and powerful class.
