Really easy if you do the readings. Quizzes every week, but take good notes and you'll do more than ok. Really nice guy; dont be afriad to talk in class.
a lot of readinnn...quizzes every week...he lectures...n talks too fast...kinda hard 2 copy down everything he says..
a lot reading...class is borin, useless class, unlike other teachers he doesn't rite anything on the board....he lectures n talks way tooooo fast...hard 2 copy everthin he says!!!
Just read the material and your fine. He does a great job of explaining stuff. A good teacher teacher to take if you want an A, Just do good on his quizzes he gives you a few questions and you get to choose what you want to answer.
easy A...if you do the readings, which aren't so bad, go to class, and take good notes. quiz every week but they're very fair. as long as you study and do well on the quizzes, you'll do fine. the midterm is questions from the previous quizzes. i love this class and prof. kaye is an amazing professor. he knows his stuffff.
very good teacher! all u have to do to get an A is to take good notes, study the notes and read occasionally for quizzes.. very helpful and clear with the material..
his grading criteria is done in a way that if you mess up on the final it wont screw you over. there is alot of notes in his class so i suggest using your laptop to take notes otherwise your hand is literally going to fall off. his midterm is pretty to the point in other words study the answers to the quizzes
The BEST! I mean he is hard but if you listen and pay attention, you will totally get it!!! Have alot of notes, alot! He goes really fast so you have to move quickly! Attend classes cuz he counts them and if you miss a few is is really understandable bout it. Can go to his office and he will help you. Hard, but good! Take it!!! Lots of work!!
Lots of notes bring your computer! Theres reading everynight but its really not that much just read and look of the notes before the quiz and you'll get an A. One term paper due at the end of the semester abour 7 pgs. im taking him again for 3000.. take him!
His Class is boring. He reads from his notes and all you do is take notes. THe Quizzes are easy if you read. but for the most part all of his classes are lecture and could get a little boring. if you hhave a hard time paying attention then dont take this class
He's an awesome teacher, I reccomend him completely. His quizzes are annoying and there are A LOT OF NOTES but it's not difficult. He is always there to listen to your problems and answers every question you have. Hes also younger and can connect to college level students. TAKE HIM
he just talks and talks and talks. your opinion doesnt matter and he hates repeating himself. dont take him unless you sit in the front and are a 4.0 student.
His Class Is Very Boring, Its All Lecture Straight From The Book So If You Expect His Notes To Help, Dont Really Expect It, Its A Lot Of Notes(NO LAPTOPS, AND KEEPS YOU AN EXTRA 10-15 Minutes) Nice Guy At Heart Just Not A Good Teacher At This Subject, Quizzes Weekly Which Gets Very Annoying,
he is extremely diffucult. makes u take mad notes and no lap tops. had weekly quezzes --> really annoying. the midterm is like a double quiz and the final same thing. have to write a MLA paper from 8 to 10 pages.really tough grader. dont take him if PHI is not ur Major.
He was a good professor. He gives a quiz each week but half of the quiz is the repition of prior quiz. Just pay attention to him. Lots of notes but it pays of on the quizes. Midterm is on first half of all the quizes and Final on the second. He likes when people participate and gives you an A if you do. He is a great professor. Easy A if you try.
he made the class a huge thing. tough the class as if it wasn not 1000 but 3000. expects u tho know exactly the way its in the books and the way his notes r. make u buy 4 books that total out to 100$. have to read a lot --> appr 20-30 pages before every lesson. dont come late.and have to pay attencian in class.
quiz every week. homework everyday, which are alot of reading. therez also a final paper u have to do. attendance is a must, he does give u extra point for attending every class, but more then 3 absent he will take away point from ut final grade
I had some preconceptions about this class and it was definitely a lot of work, but not as bad as some of the people here make it out to be. You need to put in some effort to read and study for the weekly quizzes. The latter half of the semester gets harder as the philosophers get to be more difficult, but you should be fine.
Really great teacher! All of the previous ratings are ridiculous. If you're lazy and do no work at all what do you expect? He's extremely helpful and nice to his students. Gives a lot of notes but they are EXTREMELY helpful on the quizes/midterm/final. You have to put in some effort to get a good grade but he is very understanding and very helpful.
I had no interest in Philosophy whatsoever until I took it with Kaye. He knows his subject material and actually cares about his students. There's a quiz every week but as long as you study, you should do fine. He's very helpful when you don't understand the subject material; highly recommended.
Philosophy has never been an easy subject for me, but this class helped me understand it more clearly and actually learn something new. As long as you take thorough notes, attend class, and keep up with the readings, you will do well. He gives you weekly quizzes, midterms, and a final exam. If you have any questions, don't be afraid to ask!
I took him twice cuz he's that good.multiple choice quizzes every week MC final. READ the book always and take good notes. gives 15 points in the end of the semester just for being in class on time every class. You can fail the final and still get an A. Hes very helpful, will respond to an email immediately, within minutes sometimes. Take him!
Kaye is a great teacher take him asap. Very helpful to students. You also get 15 points added just for attending every class! Yes there are weekly quizzes, but if you do the assigned hw readings you will easily get good grades and the two worst quizzes are dropped. He has review classes to go over the material and answer any questions. EASY
Brilliant professor, my second time taking him. You'll pass as long as you take notes and do all the reading. I've learned more in this class than any other. A must take.
Really fair grader, weekly quizzes that are easy if you paid attention, and any papers or short answer questions are graded leniently. He can talk fast and be hard to understand, but if you actually listen, he repeats everything thats important. I read less than half of what was assigned and got an A on every quiz just by paying attention.
Really nice guy that loves what he teaches. Weekly quizzes (1st half of semester were short-answers, 2nd half were MC) on the readings and lectures, so do the assigned reading and pay attention in class. There is also midterm, term paper, and final. You'll really learn a lot if you put some effort into it! Asks questions, or email him if anything!
very dedicated and helpful professor. wants to make sure you do well in his class. great orator. his class will leave you enlightened. one of the best professors i've had. anyone who thinks otherwise is an idiot. he will change your life
im the kind of person who doesnt "get" abstract subjects ie math, science, and philosphy so for me this class was hard. read the book! his notes are long and sometimes dont make sense but just ask him to explain and he'll be happy to. any problems your having go to him during his office hours. wants students to do well ... he has good intentions =)
Basically stands at the front of the room and reads from the textbook. Speaks way too fast and has no regard for what time the class ends, you leave when he's done. Nice guy, but the class is boring as hell. Take him if u enjoy weekly quizzes and taking about 6 pages of notes every single class.
you're dumb if you dont take him. professor kaye is amazing. made me really love philosophy
Professor Kaye is AWESOME! He tells you EXACTLY what he expects from you, and if you do it, you get an A, its that simple. Weekly quizzes which are simple if you read, mid term and final are the same thing, if you read.. you'll do well. He is the most accessible professor ive ever had, and he really wants to help his studnets do well. Take him!
Takes the topic too seriously,it is not an advanced course. He goes extremely quickly, but he DOES TRY to help students. Anyway, he expect a lot from students, basically about 25-35 pages a night, weekly quizzes, mostly based on definition rather than content. He recycles his questions, thus doesn't hand back any quiz papers, which doesn't help.
I got an A in this class but it wasn't easy, Weekly quizes force you to read challenging material. He Gives A LOT of notes 3-4 pages with my small handwriting. Super lecturey. He's always willing to help and lets you know and also give you extra points for attendance which makes it mandatory. I didnt like the essay though
Kaye takes his class too seriously for a core but he's just really enthusiastic about PHI. He knows a lot and wants his students to learn. This means you will read a LOT and take a LOT of notes. Bottom line, take him if you like philosophy and want to learn. If you hate philosophy and just need a core class, avoid him. He is nice and fair but firm.
This class is not an easy A, you have to work hard to get an A. Do all the readings, attend all lectures, take notes, and write a term paper. His class is really helpful I learned alot about philosophy and it was interesting. Professor Kaye is an excellent philosophy teacher take his class!
Must do lots of reading and note taking to do well on his weekly quizzes. He can be very one-sided at times, and force his opinion on students, which I couldn't stand. Attendance and participation are required. Term paper was hard. Don't try arguing with this guy-he is always right. I did well in his class regardless though.
Great professor. You will read a lot for each class but it's interesting stuff and that's kind of what college is for so I don't know why people complain. The paper was challenging, his weekly quizzes are easy if you do what he tells you to. Lectures are long but you do not have to copy everything. Extremely helpful! Take him you will learn a lot.
Professor Kaye was one of the best professors I had at St.John's. If you want to learn a lot about philosophy, I suggest taking his class. His lectures are very helpful. Yes, he does go kind of quick, but you have to know what is important to take notes on. He breaks the imformation down so that you will be able to understand it. Take Him!
Very good professor. he is helpful and always makes himself available to you. You will learn alot in this class.
QUIZZES EVERY MONDAY. TERM PAPER 6-8 PAGES LONG. VERY HELPFUL. ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY. READING EVERYDAY. COULD BE STRICT AT TIMES BUT HE JUST WANTS TO HELP YOU OUT. OVERALL NOT A BAD TEACHER I ENDED UP WITH A B+
idk who writes all of these fantastic reviews. this class makes me want to not go to school anymore. there is AT LEAST 30 pages of reading per night he talks to his classes like we are retarded and when you ask him to explain something he merely repeats what he said. do not take this class you will regret it.
This class was the worst. Talks way too fast and makes you feel dumb to ask a question. Reading is a most and plenty off. You must buy five textbooks . . . can you say od and he checks. Quizzes every Monday. Did I mention every Monday. This class makes you want to jump . . . literaly
He is simply the best. I enjoyed the class so much and learned a whole lot. No actual HW but you need to come to every class and must read! If you put in the hard work it will pay off and you will earn a good grade. 1 7pg Paper, a weekly quiz, midterm & final (all MC). He is brilliant and makes everything so clear and is always around to help you!
stay away unless you want tons of reading and lectures that run overtime. hes no help when it comes to the THESIS paper he makes you do. he needs to recognize this is a REQUIRED course, not doing 3 philosophies by choice.
There is way too much reading. If you have a demanding major, you should look for another prof. He expects us to read a large amount of material when we have obligations to other classes. Classes often run overtime. There is a thesis paper where your chosen topic most likely will not be approved the first time around. I regret taking this class.
Assigns tons of reading assignments every class. Weekly quizzes that are sometimes easy and sometimes difficult. It depends on how well you read the chapter given. he assigns quizzes on chapters you read the night before, but haven't discussed in class, so except some level of difficulty. tries to help
A very productive semester whit Prof. Kaye. Even though I was one of the more quiet students of the class, I enjoyed the class very much. I had learned much in this class, and I especially enjoyed learning about the ideas of Nietzsche which is his area of expertice. I have come to enjoy reading more after the class, even though I didn?t think I
This class is not an easy A OR B. You must buy all 5 books, must read every night. Dont slack off with your reading. Have to go to class everyday. Test and quizs are multiple choice. Please particpate. Term paper is kinda difficult. Homework is the reading. You wont like him at first but then at the day of the final you probably like him a little.
He's a challenging professor, but he is very helpful. He stresses his office hours and is very willing to help. The class uses many textbooks (5) and reading each night is a must. You'll get a good grade if you do all that he asks you. There's a quiz every Monday, a mid-term, paper, and final. I learned a good deal from him.
I hated this class till the end of the semester. Towards the end, I was finally able to appreciate the class after a small heart-felt conversation with the professor. I realized he is so caring. If I did the readings every night and came to his office hours, class would've been better. Don't do what I did. Put more effort, & u will gain something.
I recommend him if you ready to work hard and at least show a lot of interest about the subject. He provides all help you need if you have trouble with the material. Very caring for his students and fair grader. You will learn a lot, all i can say great professor!
Great professor- I had him for my ethics class and I cant stress the importance of learning ethics. Everything that I learned in his class I have been able to apply to all my other studies. Just do the readings. He explains it all so clearly.
Hard professor. There is a reading assignment every night. He goes through his lectures quickly and speaks quickly so be prepared to write fast
talks way to fast. office hours 1 hour a week. research paper=horror... gives no direction or help. quizzes every monday. hated this class
Throughout the semester I both agreed and disagreed with some things he said, but I found myself at the end pushing my limits and forcing myself to think in new and unique ways. At first I thought he was putting his own views on me, but throughout the semester I realized that maybe he really was just trying to make us gain truth from questioning.
What you put into Professor Kaye's course is exactly what you'll get out of it. If you do what he asks (he makes himself CRYSTAL clear), you'll get the grade you deserve. Always available to students who have any trouble. Get ready to write, lectures are vigorous. He recognizes and appreciates serious students. A VERY fair grader, and a HOTTIE! :)

He's an absolutely awesome professor! There are weekly MC quizzes and three exams, but you get what you deserve. A lot of readings to do, and you MUST do them,he asks about them next class too. He's very caring and stresses his office hours. Just pay attention, read, participate in class, take notes, come to class, and you'll do well!
comes off intimidating, but a nice guy. do the readings and even if you skim it just write down something to talk about just in case he calls on you. participation is huge. everything he says in class is on the quizzes/test almost exactly word for word. so write down the notes and youll be fine. A is very possible.
He's a strict but nice professor. His lecture is quite hard. Instead of making it easy to understand, he often quotes from the book and make students confused. IMO, things that he taught was not related to Business Ethic at all. Tons of reading. Take him only if you are philosophy lover. Business student should NOT take him.
Kaye is an awesome professor. He will completely revolutionize your method of thinking and will open your mind to the profound works of philosophy. He is strict with lateness, laptop use and restroom visits, but he wants to make sure that you get the best understanding of philosophy. He's passionate about the material. Overall, he's a genius.
Attendance is mandatory! Quiz before every class on the assigned reading and his lecture. Cannot miss a class. Quizzes and his 3 exams (not including final) are pretty simple if you read and go to lecture.
Two things about this class: the prof comes off ridiculously rude and you have to read to get an A. After a while you'll realize that it's just the way he conducts himself that makes him come off bad. There's quizzes every class and three tests, pretty simple. He's very knowledgeable and open to discussion, he's just not the best people person.
Listen, people misread him...he's not that bad at all. He really cares for his students and very accessible as well. However, I only recommend this class to hard working students. Expect to thoroughly read the material and participate. He notices those who at least make an effort. Take him...it's worth it!
Prof. Kaye requires a lot of reading from week to week. He goes over everything in class and genuinely wants you to pass. He's always available for office hours and his quizzes and tests are easy as long as you study your notes. i am very happy i took his class
Wow, students underestimate how GREAT he is! He's passionate about philosophy and wants you to acquire knowledge. He's actually very caring-I mean, I suffer from migraines and he was actually concerned about it! Just read (thoroughly), take good notes, study, take advantage of his office hours, or even ask for help via e-mail (he's very accessible). Also, he doesn't force his opinions on you, he is just trying to get you to think differently.Want an enriching learning experience? Take him!
I started out HATING philosophy and although I still kind of do, this professor certainly clarified a lot of philosophical theories. Yes he can be tough but please take him if you're looking for a real education and not just blowing your money on a degree for no reason. He was awesome
He genuinely cares about your grade and he wants you to learn & do well. He is passionate about the subject also. However, he requires 4 textbooks, a quiz every week, about 3 exams, & even if you have an exam one week, he'll still give you a quiz. This class is a lot of reading and you have to be serious. Don't take if you have a full schedule!
LOTS of reading and weekly quizzes. As long as you read carefully, take notes on the readings, and take notes during his lectures and study them, you'll be fine. It's a lot of work but it's doable. He's very helpful and really wants you to learn. It was a challenging class, but I worked hard and got my A. You'll learn a lot from him.
Very interested in the subject, but is not helpful. Expects everyone to know everything about PHI prior to attending. NO homework/projects, but quizzes EVERY Monday. Do not take if expecting a decent class. You will probably be concerned about this class before others, even Science majors. I do not recommend period.
He honestly expects a lot from his students. I spent way too much time reading for this class compared to my other science classes. I do not recommend him at all unless you plan to spend your entire weekend reading for his class for that quiz on Monday. I should've just taken an online class. Other than that, his tests are easy if you studied.
You can't read him. I wouldn't calk him mean, but I wouldn't call him nice either. I had him once a week in Wednesday's for 3 hours. Every Wednesday was a quiz or test, so you spend every single weekend preparing for that quiz or test, which was beyond stressful. He expects way too much, looking for an easy A, AVOID.
I've never dropped a class in 3yrs but this man is impossible. Each week reading was a min of 80pgs and you're tested on it every week. Too many options to take easier classes/professors. If you are an upperclassman or taking your major classes, avoid him. His lectures are boring and is really rude when calling out students.
I'm not sure what everyone is complaining about. By no means is this class an easy A, but what good would it be otherwise? If you're a driven, open-minded individual looking to actually learn something as opposed to mindless sitting through class, then take this professor. Reading is required but the tests and quizzes are straight from the text.
By no means is this class an easy A, but it very possible to do well. The professor is very straight forward about his expectations and lays the entire semester out very clear for students. Yes, there is a weekly quiz but the questions come directly from the text. He is an amazing teacher. If you actually want to learn, take him.
Prof. Kaye is really helpfull. However, his class requires a lot of reading. His tests and quizzes are pretty fair and are always curved.Make sure not to miss any of his classes . You might be lost if you do. Overall, he's a really good professor, attentive to his student's needs and very funny in a sarcastic way!
Professor Kaye is the real deal; no nonsense here! His class is centered around attaining WISDOM (which is what philosopy is all about) it's not an easy A but if you do your assigned readings, you're literally "A" okay! He's genuinely interested in the benefit of his students & will help in anyway possible. DO take him, he's the BEST!!!!!!
You should definitely take this professor, you won't regret it :) He is always looking for ways to help his students so you should always feel free to come to him. Expect reading every week but quizzes/tests are really fair. Take lots of notes and pay attention in class. If you work hard then getting an A should be possible.
He is very upfront and honest from day one about how difficult this class can be if you don't do the reading so just do it every class and do it a few pages a day during the week, dont try and crame it all into one day. He makes you work for your grade, but he is very passionate about the subject and I dont regret taking him.
Professor Kaye was not the easiest professor that I have ever had. but then again tough but clear professors are what you need to build you up as a scholar. No, I did not get an A, but I can live with the B, because I learned!
In my four years as a college student this was the hardest class i ever took. I am graduating with a 3.8 and this was the only class in college i ever received. a B in. Saying that ,being my lowest grade ever , it was the class i learned most from. If your only worried about a good grade , AVOID, if you actually want to learn , TAKE
I am currently not even passing this class, but that is not the professors fault. Prof. Kaye warns you that it is not an easy A & you must fulfill all requirements but he is an amazing professor who has everyones best interest at heart and I have learned so much from him. You have to be a good test taker and keep on track but very interesting class
Professor Kaye only wants the best for you. If you take the time to listen closely to him and learn to read between the lines, it will be worth it. He can help you to become more profound. The class is not an "easy A". But, a real "A" is never easy.
Kaye is a great teacher; give this man a raise! He really challenges you intellectually and makes it clear that if one desires to truly learn Philosophy it takes hard work and dedication - perhaps something lost to today's students. If you are willing to learn and participate, he will reward you. You will gain something form taking him.
BY FAR the hardest class ive ever taken at St. Johns, but it is also the class in which I have learned the most, Professor Kaye will teach you to think differently, ask questions, and not believe everything you're told. It is hard work, a lot of reading, and sometimes frustrating, but the end result or "Telos" lol (philosophy word) is amazing.
NOT an easy A. You need to work for your grade in the course, and Prof Kaye is honest about it. The class is time consuming and demanding, but you will leave knowing more about philosophy than you thought possible within one semester. Prof Kaye is blunt and sometimes rude, and I would not recommend him to everyone. If you work, you will learn.
I'll be honest this is the HARDEST CLASS I've EVER taken and it is not an easy A, but I've learned more from this one class than I have my first two years here. Prof. Kaye is honest and upfront with his students about what is required for this class and truly cares about his students. Do the assigned reading and go to class and you'll be fine
Professor Kaye is amazing! His class is tough and there's a lot of reading and a quiz every Monday but professor Kaye is more than willing to help. If you read carefully, participate, go to class, and ask for help when you need it you will get an A. Do your work and learn! I definitely recommend taking this class if you care to learn.
Definitely the hardest class I've taken in a long time however, he's honest the first day of class. You must keep up with the assigned reading or else it is impossible to do well. That being said just keep up w the reading, do well on your weekly quiz and participate. He always makes himself available to help! Very caring and intelligent professor.
If your looking for an easy class then Professor Kaye is not for you, if your looking for an inspirational teacher that will change way you view the world then i definitely recommend this class. This was one of the hardest classes I had for the semester, but the only class i will be continuing for another semester. Thank You
If you really want to learn, if you're truly in pursuit of knowledge take him. if your looking for and easy A look elsewhere
This was one of my hardest classes this semester, but I learned that you really do have to work hard for what you want in life. You have to earn your grade.
One of the hardest classes I've ever taken, but I've learned more in it than any other class. Professor Kaye lets you know from the start that you cannot skate through, expect to work and work hard. If you put in the necessary work and do the readings, you should have no trouble getting an A or B. Will definitely be taking more classes of his.
He is a good professor, but here is some tips if you want to pass his class: Buy the textbook prior to the first day of class!!!! Not only he will take points off for not having the books, but you WILL fall behind in the heavy readings he gives out. All of the tests are based on the reading. I'm a bad student but I hope you pass, like a boss!!!
You have a quiz each week. To pass the quiz you MUST Read the assigned reading. And all the tests are cumulative. The second exam which we took in March 30th had questions about things we only studied for 1 day back on January or February. He does lecture however what we talk about in the lectures in not vital to the tests or quizzes at all. READ
This isn't the class to take if you are looking for something easy, but if you are willing to work you are going to get a good grade. Prof. Kaye is extremely knowledgeable and will help anytime you need. If you don't do well it's because you aren't trying in his class.
This class calls for preparation, you have to be serious about your education or prepare to drop. He gives a 20 question on the reading which is not too bad as long as you read properly. He also show a lot of care for his students, he gives study sessions after class once a week that you should attend. He is one professor that wants you to learn.
The course is straight forward as it is exam and quiz based. There are no papers, but there is a good amount of reading to prepare for each class Questions tend to repeat themselves throughout the course, so it is recommended you take note of anything you miss and you'll get amazing grades Just read and its an easy A
Professor Kaye was the most inspirational professor I have ever had. His class is not easy. There are weekly quizzes and participation is necessary, but the wisdom you gain from his class is incredible. He tells you it's not an easy A, but college shouldn't be about that, it should be about learning. That's exactly what you'll do here; learn.
I knew I would take something new from this class but I was not prepared for how enriching and life-changing it was. If you're someone who actually wants to learn something in college, I whole-heartedly recommend taking Professor Kaye's class. SN: Make sure to acquaint yourself with the syllabus (especially the section on your attendance grade) ;)
He's a great professor! You have to put in the effort to get the marks you want. He is very enthusiastic and very easy to get along with. He geniually cares about his students and the class may seem difficult, but it is a well ran class and I highly recommend taking this course.
This was one of the most straight-forward classes I have ever taken at St. John's University. If you do the readings and attend class, you will get an A, simple. The quizzes are short and there are NO PAPERS. This isn't the easiest course, but you will actually learn, which makes taking Prof. Kaye's class worth it in the end.
Professor Kaye metaphysic class is probably the most rewarding class I have ever took. Not only did I learn more in this class than ever before it also show me how to become a better student By no chance is this class easy and if that's what you want wrong place. He is pretty fair with his grading also will sit with anyone who wants help.
The Professor is very caring. I learned so much more than I ever expected. The material and lectures changed my life.
This course is very much based off of the assigned readings, are there is a reading for each class. But if you can stay on top of the readings the lectures, quizzes, and exams will be very easy to follow. Highly recommend this class.
Metaphysics with Professor Kaye is what a metaphysics class SHOULD be- opens your eyes to views on the world around you that you haven't considered before. Read, participate, and this guy will personally make sure you do really well. What a refreshing break from rambling professors that you don't even remember after the semester's over. TAKE HIM!
Ethics-Most intellectually stimulating class. He's a great lecturer and always keeps the class interested with real-life scenarios and humor. You have to read to learn and it's a difficult subject but if he sees you're trying your best he will give you a good grade. He's a very nice guy whose passionate about the topic and always available for help
As long as you are able to read and understand this class is great, Sometimes it is difficult but that is college for you. Do the readings and ask questions, i promise you'll get an A. Some topics can be rather boring but thats philosophy for you, Most dedicated teacher i've ever had
This was by no means an easy class. However, Professor Kaye tells his students right from the beginning that he cares for each and every one of us and I sincerely believe that. Just like in life, you get what you put in. If you do the assigned readings, ask questions, and volunteer, you are bound to be successful
Prof Kaye is one of the best professors I've taken at St. John's. He genuinely wants you to learn for the pleasure of learning and you don't find that in many professors. It won't be easy, but nothing great in life is ever easy. You won't just learn about philosophy but you'll learn a lot about yourself and what you're capable of.
Prof. Kaye tries very hard to instill strong work ethics to his students. He also wants his students to become critical thinkers. After this course, you will gain invaluable wisdom that you can carry with you for the rest of your college life and even after you graduate.
Professor Kaye is probably the best philosophy teacher I've taken. He really cares about his students and is a very fair grader. The only tough part of the class is the readings because he does give quizzes every week. If you read everyday and participate then you will do fine. If you have any questions, just ask him because he'll be there to help.
Professor Kaye is a great professor. His ultimate goal is to make sure you leave the class with knowledge. He doesn't throw you any curveballs and the class is exactly laid out like it is on the syllabus. The class is challenging. There are weekly quizzes and reading is paramount. Honestly just read and keep up to date and you'll do great.
Prof. Kaye changed my views about studying Philosophy. I never thought that I'd be deeply invested in this class more than any other courses I've taken so far. I greatly appreciate the lessons that I gained from him. He really cares for his students and if he sees that you are trying your best in his class, he will definitely give you a good grade.
By far one of the best professors I've had. Challenging class, but if you read carefully, take notes and participate you'll do well. He doesn't "spoon-feed" the material - you are expected to think. Interesting lectures, clear expectations, fair grading... He's very passionate and always offers help - you can tell he genuinely cares for students.
Prof. Kaye is very good and helpful. He gives you insight way beyond what books, reading alone AND others can give you. I've always been interested in philosophy but he taught the class so well that I learned to love the subject. However, if you are a LAZY student, you're not gonna pass (in my opinion, lazy students really won't in any class).
Prof. Kaye is just an amazing professor! This class is tough but as long as that you do all the work, you'll be fine. Be prepared every single class & do all the assigned readings. There are weekly quizzes from the readings. No papers. Make sure to participate in class because he calls on people who do not talk. Take his class & you'll learn a lot.
Hard class, but actually learn! Makes you work for your grade, which will make you appreciate the class and want to work hard to succeed. He has a reading due every class and a quiz on it . The quizzes are always 20 questions. The 2 test and final are always 50 questions and cumulative. He just wants you to know the material and not memorize it.
Awesome guy. I loved his energy throughout the course. It was obvious that he cared about how well his students were doing and if we were grasping the information. The material is straight forward, and so are the tests/quizess. It's not an easy course, but you'll do well if you work for it. Participation is a MUST!
Key to his class is to read and participate in class.
Prof Kaye is a good person, good professor and his lectures will never put you off to sleep. However, he gives really hard quizzes every week and his tests are also hard. He curves but its still not enough to get an A. ITS A LOT...A TON OF READING! He takes of points if you dont participate! If you dont do the readings thoroughly, you will fail.
Professor Kaye is, by far and away, the best professor I've ever had. Not only is he clearly brilliant, but he also completely changed the way I view the world. In addition, he truly cares about his students. This class is not an easy A, though, and you must be prepared for a challenge. Take him!
Professor Kaye is a very nice guy. He truly wants you to understand the material and do well in his class. This class is NOT easy by any means, you need to read A LOT. The readings are very time consuming & the quizzes every week are very specific but if you read slowly & carefully & take notes you should be okay.
I am not a lover of philosophy, never have been. I found this course WAY harder than any other philosophy, but I learned a lot more than I ever did in my other two philo courses combined. This class is very hard, but it makes you think, and Prof. Kaye knows what he's talking about, very much so. Read, participate, but it's not an easy course.
Prof. Kaye made it clear that his ultimate goal for his students is to attain wisdom. I feel that he achieved his goal. He isn't like other professors that hand you an A. He makes you work for it. This isn't bad, it taught me that hard work is rewarded. Be prepared for a lot of reading and weekly quizzes. If you show effort you'll be fine!
Professor Kaye is an excellent professor. I learned a lot and realized what his ultimate goal is- for all of his students to learn as much as possible. He holds all of his students to a very high standard and wants them to realize their potentials. His class is not easy but if you take it seriously and actually read, an A is completely possible.
I love Kaye. He is one of the only professors I have had that i felt like i got my money's worth. DO THE READING. This isnt a class you can slide by in, because this is a class you actually learn in. But you'll legit walk out of his class with so much knowledge under your belt. & He was super kind to me & attentive. just talk to him!
Professor Kaye is a professor who is full of compassion and kindness, yet at the same time, serious and demanding. He tries his best to bring the best out of his students and pushes them to reach their potential. There is a lot of reading so make sure to take down notes as well as take good classroom notes.
Professor Kaye will give you your moneys worth! Youre expected to hold up your end as a student, do the weekly readings-DEFINITELY not sparknotes. Professor Kaye does a great job of emphasizing what needs to be known, so be sure to take diligent notes! He truly respects all as adults, and really views you as an intellectual. one of my faves.
He's a great guy. The work can be overwhelming to some, if you're not a heavy reader don't take him. He's very educated and accessible, he doesn't look at notes when he lectures. He makes everything clear but it's a very hard class
theres a quiz every time theres a class, the material is ridiculously hard its mostly history based too much reading and half the books you will not understand 95% of the time
The class is very difficult. Way too intense especially if you're not a philosophy major.
For an intro class this class is very difficult. Professor Kay is a great guy but this course consists of multiple difficult readings and in depth quiz questions. There are 3 tests all cumulative and quizzes in the beginning of every class followed by a class discussion (everyone must participate). Honestly, the work for this class is not worth it
Definitely a lot of work and the tests and quizzes were pretty tough. You really have to study a lot if you want to do good in his class but he is a pretty nice professor overall! He is really caring!!
Professor Kaye is a vet educated man and is very dedicated to making sure his students are successful. He is very easy to talk to but you cannot skip or skim ANY of the readings or you will NOT pass the class.
Dr Kaye is an excellent professor and man of great integrity. His course is often challenging, but you walk out of his class much wiser and with a new perspective on life. As long as you participate eagerly, do the weekly readings, and put effort forth in this class, achieving an A isn't impossible whatsoever.
Professor Kaye is one of the most insightful and well-educated professors here at St. John's. To pass the class, you have to do the assigned readings and really understand the material before you walk into class. As he says many times in class, nothing in this life that is worth having comes easy. You will leave this class wiser than you entered it
Prof. Kaye is amazing! This class is not that hard because he is not too tough of a grader. There is a quiz at the beginning of each class. All you need to do is READ, TAKE GOOD NOTES, and READ OVER your notes before class. The readings are tough but as long as you take your time to really understand, you'll be fine. I got an A!
Professor Kaye is such a passionate teacher. He really wants his students to understand the material and have it apply to real life. He wants everyone to do well, he just wants to see you put in the effort. Do the readings, attend class and participate & you will be fine. You will definitely come out with so much knowledge.
Dr. Kaye is a very knowledgeable and caring professor. Course load is a lot of reading with weekly quizzes. He really cares about his students and puts his heart into his work. DO NOT TAKE CLASS if you are not willing to do the work. He makes that evidently clear in the beginning of the course. Great guy as well outside of class. Thanks Dr. Kaye!
When I say passionate.. I mean passionate. This man loves what he does and its really nice to see a professor who is so dedicated. Plus this man wants to see you succeed, its a lot of reading but he checks on his students who are struggling and makes it known to the class that he's there if you have any questions. BUT if you're lazy don't take him!
Dr. Kaye sets the epitome for how college learning should be. Instead of memorizing thru this course, he teaches how to obtain and pursue wisdom. I truly enjoyed this course & will give you the key to getting an A. Read, takes plenty of notes (in lectures & readings), make time to study, review them frequently,& reach out to him if you're confused.
Professor Kaye is really into his subject and knows it well. While he may seem a bit different from your typical teacher he does really want you to understand the subject and he feels it important that you give it your all. The work is hard to be fair but careful reading is generally enough to get through the class.
DO NOT TAKE CLASS UNLESS YOU PREPARED TO WORK LIKE THIS IS YOUR ONLY CLASS. He gives a 20 question quiz every single class and only 3 tests. You read A LOT of material and if you don't participate then your losing 20% of your grade. I suggest that if your a phil major then take this if not and want to just finish your requirement avoid this class.
this professor is... different. I'm really learning a lot, but I'm also becoming addicted to adderall. not kidding. Youll do good if you read carefully. the reading is very time consuming and will take you a whole day. try to avoid but if you can't you' ll do fine.
This professor is a really nice man whose very passionate about teaching. However, I recommend only taking this class if you have the time because you have a quiz every class based on the readings, and if you majors tough as it is, you do not want to take an elective where you have to spend so much time on something your not going to use again.
Professor Kaye is the best teacher I have ever had!
He expects a lot from his students. It's hard work but it's not so bad. You have Professor Kaye who is always there for you. Friends and rivals that you will make. The classroom is designed around care and metaphysical activity. An A is easily possible but there is more to try. You have found him here mixed in opinion, I challenge you, Take him!
I loved this class. The assignments were tough but it was a great challenge and would definitely take again. I wish there were more professors with this kind of attitude. He was very helpful and approachable and made 3 hours fly by.
Great professor. Very passionate about his work and inspiring! If I wasn't graduating, I'd be taking his class again!
We need more professors like Dr. Kaye. I dropped out of 3 philosophy classes up until I had this class and I was dreading every second on starting it, but once I started this class and saw the way he explained everything, it completely changed my perspective and opened up my mind to it. Would most likely take again.
Dr. Kaye assigns a lot of material and you need to have good time management skills to finish everything in detail. Besides that, upon entering class he lectures with understanding and repetition so the material is constantly drilled into your head with full understanding. He appreciates active participation and hard work. Take him.
Dr. Kaye is proficient in the western canon of metaphysics and can recite many philosophers verbatim. Class review is so thorough, students can practically do the same by the end of the semester. Quizzes are weekly and prof will drop lowest quiz grades. All books are necessary (I suggest renting). No papers. You'll get your money's worth.
Professor Kaye is probably the best professor in the philosophy department by far in terms of conveying material to students, extra help, and making philosophy challenging in a good way. Although very time consuming as a whole with weekly quizzes and exams, he drops lowest quiz grades. Would recommend if you wish for real critical thinking.
He's very strict but he knows his stuff. Don't expect to do good if you don't show up or do the readings EVERY WEEK. Participation is a must and he will pick on you if you don't contribute. A quiz every week at the beginning of the class. However, if you reach out to him during his office hours he is very helpful.
If you cannot read 3 books in 2 days DO NOT TAKE HIM! He's a really nice guy that is passionate about what he teaches & really cares about you learning, but he assigns an awful amount of readings, book summaries wont help a bit, gives quizzes every class on the readings from the night before plus everything we've ever read since the first class.
If you want an Easy A, then you probably shouldn't take this class. If you want to learn and come away each class frustrated about the things you've learned, then this is the class for you. Dr. Kaye is the most passionate teacher I've ever had in St. Johns and I came out of this semester learning how to think and become a better person.
Dr. Kaye is by far one of the most knowledgeable professors Ive encountered. Hes also one of the most involved professors, and takes genuine interest in helping his students do well. He may be more on the strict side, but hes very understanding. His class is definitely challenging but he gives you the opportunity to do well.
If you care about becoming a better person, I would take this class. There is a lot of reading and you will be challenged, but the lectures are very insightful. This class will make you self-reflect, and think outside of the box. At the end of the semester I walked out a wiser person. Highly Recommend.
If you have the time to thoroughly READ the material each week, you will do well. Great payoff IF you are willing to learn. Must do the work required, there is no way around it. The material overlaps towards the end (good for studying). Don't skip/tardy to earn bonus points. Participate to show you understood reading. Difficult but manageable.
Hard class but definitely worth it to see what youre capable of. If you wanna pass, read and understand the material, i did the questions in the back of the texts.. This was my first class after a 2 years break and definitely great for students who want to learn and like a challenge
Dr. Kaye is so bad omg please dont take his class fall semester if you want to enjoy your Christmas break
not helpful at all. dont take unless you want to do bad and ruin your gpa like i did. hard to keep up, too much work for a philosophy
Unpopular opinion haha. I think he is a great professor. A very great performer as well, but I will agree with some of the comments below. You need to be passionate about philosophy if you want to do well in the class. There is a lot of readings, but he says it first class. If you don't want to work hard and learn, just drop out. I learned a lot.
Absolutely awful. DO NOT TAKE!!! Impossible to pass & completely incompetent. This class was so horrible I dont ever want to take philosophy again. He gives out too many readings & expects you to basically have them by memory. He is extremely irritating to listen to for 3 STRAIGHT HOURS. Taking this class is basically asking your gpa to plummet!!!
Doctor Kayes runs a great class that is rigersome and challenging yet very doable. You will sturggle in this class but if you put in any effort this class is nothing to be afraid of at all. He explains exactly what is required of you first day. Kaye makes you become an all around better student and he truly cares for his students and helps them.
David Kaye really knows his stuff. Yes there is a lot of reading, but if you actually do the assigned readings its not that difficult. I mean its pretty obvious, do the work and your grade will reflect that. He is very caring and he really does want his students to do well. He drops lowest quiz grades too at the end. His class is tough but good.
Knowledgeable at his craft. Definitely be ready to work for your grade. Reading is doable but you must know your stuff. Class may feel lengthy but definitely worth it. Kaye teaches you the material in a simple, straight-forward manner. Just commit to the effort required and you will do fine. Don't be afraid to ask questions or go to office hours.
Please for the love of GOD do not take him unless you're a philosophy major (even then, I would hesitate to take him). Expects you to read chapters (WITH AN S, as in PLURAL) before each class. And then in class, he calls on random people to talk about what you read. This participation MATTERS. There is a quiz every single class. u hv bn warnd
He is really strict on issues like phones, laptops and such and a lot of people complain about his quizzes and exams. But he has like 8 quizzes a semester and he dropped 4 of them. The exams have a 20 point curve, if you get a 70, then that's a 90. I did come out of the class learning a lot but I get why some people might be wary of him.
he's very passionate about what he teaches and it's great. Very detailed and stays on topic. he's a tough class but it's worth it if you actually want to understand philosophy.
Dr. Kaye is a caring professor who sticks to his ethics on what a classroom should be like. His criteria is carefully detailed in his syllabus, so it's really important that you read and follow it if you want to do well in his class! If you communicate with him, read and stay prepared for class, you'll do fine!
Do not listen to the other reviews. This is not a very difficult class. You have to do the readings and there are quizzes every class, but the questions are based off the reading word for word and it's all multiple choice. If you have the time to read and take notes (about 3 hours a week total) you will do well in this course.
If youre looking for an easy A stop reading this and pick someone else. Really awesome guy that actually cares about his students. I got a B, but thats bc I had a lot going on in my life when I took him, but Im proud of it. Quizzes every week based on readings. Buy the books before the semester. READ, SHOW UP, PARTICIPATE and you will do well!!!!
Dr. Kaye mentions that in his class you will have to read and do a lot of work, but in the end you will gain knowledge. And this is entirely true, if you do the readings, you should have no problem doing well in his class. As a professor, he is passionate about the information and also very kind. I highly recommend taking this class!!
An amazing professor who genuinely wants you to do well and grow as a student, the work is definitely worth it in the end.
Want an easy A? This isn't the class for you! He assigns long readings that you will always have a quiz the following class, also to that there will be a verbal quiz after the quiz. If you can't explain your answer to the way he wants he assumes that you didn't do the reading. Also, he does not allow makeup anything even if you have a valid reason.
Yes , this professor has a very clear agenda and tells you when the class starts everything he wants from you . But hes absolutely ridiculous. He expects way to much from a core class. His class is over three hours long and gives you a 5 minute break, and keeps you for the full 3 hrs. Has ridiculous rules . Just dont take him. To much reading
I took PHI3000C with Professor Kaye back in 2013. However, I found that he was an enjoyable PHI professor. I found myself engaged in his lessons, and asked about readings. Don't expect an easy A. I had to work for mine. For those saying his positive reviews are fake, how dare you? Just bc you had a bad exp. doesn't invalidate others' pos exps
The good things in life are difficult to obtain. At first, Dr. Kaye's teaching style may seem difficult to most, but that is not to 'punish' the students, but rather encourage them to work hard for the 'good things' in life e.g. wisdom, truth. He ALWAYS responds to emails in 24 hours. I, too, took this class during the coronavirus and enjoyed it!
The class makes you work for it, but you will 100% come out more knowledgeable. Very upfront in the beginning and lays out all the work and expectations. Quizzes/ tests can be tough at times but if you don't do the readings you will not pass. Tough, but he puts in more effort than other core teachers and cares for his students. Answers emails fast
ok so you want to put hours of effort into a 3 credit class be my guest and you will still not get a good grade. Instead of not counting a quiz, how about you actually tell us whats on the quiz?
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. SAVE YOUR GPA.
just do the reading and participate you will get an A, all the answers are in the textbook. No tricky quiz/exam question. You will get an A and you will learn a lot :)
For a core class, the intensity is quite unreasonable and he doesn't do a great job explaining the content. Better for students who actually major in Philosophy.
Would not recommend this teacher. Unless you major and are very interested in philosophy. All the tests do not require any understanding of material. Simply being able to quote the text will get you by as many of the test questions require you recall a specific paragraph with a sentence removed. Would not recommend
He is the worst professor ever, don't take him. save your GPA and run as far as you can!!! exams are extremely hard, you need to memorize all the details in the book and notes.
AVOID at all costs!!! ! Worst professor ever His quizzes ask about the smallest detail of 50 + pages you read every week first half of the class he questions you about the reading and if you don't answer he assumes you don't read second half of the class he talks about politics the little philosophy he teaches has nothing to do with the reading
This professor is difficult. he is a tough grader, he assigns 30 pages to read, his voice makes lectures difficult to understand and the material is difficult to understand.
Really nice guy, but one of the worst teachers/professors I have ever had in my life. Do NOT take this course, and especially do not take it online. Textbook readings vary from 15-90+ pages in length. Does not write notes for the class, and expects you to memorize everything from the course almost automatically. Also hard to understand him speaking
DONT take this professor. The way he speaks makes the class incredibly hard to follow. He rambled on about topics unrelated philosophy, halfway through the class he'll finally get to class material, practically forcing students to stay past the end of class in order to get a chance to understand what's going to be on the quiz every week. Stay away.
I had him for a 2 hour, 50 minute course once a week and he used to regularly keep us past the allotted time, for as much as 20 minutes (which isnt allowed). Half the class dropped or used pass/fail. You have to write nonstop, everything he says during lecture, then he picks anything he says as questions on the weekly quizzes, even minute details.
