Great prof. Very engaging and interesting lectures, helpful and kind, not to mention drool-worthy. Attend all lectures and do all the readings. The class is interesting, but not easy. You will need to read the textbook very carefully, as his MC questions tend to be based on details in the book. Gives helpful hints as to what will be on the exam.
Class was extremely boring as he read off the lecture slides. A lot of videos with the lights dim so it was hard to stay awake. Lecture slides were pretty much a summary of the textbook. Good looking though.
His tests are detail-oriented, especially his MC questions. Reading the text thoroughly is recommended, his other half of the test is SA, which is sometimes intensive on memorizing facts and what he calls critical thinking. Good impression, and I liked his shirts...
Knowledgeable, enthusiastic, supportive and positive...everything one would want in an instructor. He makes an effort to make often dry material more appealing through the use of videos and other media. Tests are generally quite fair, but some MC questions can be a bit nitpicky so close reading of the textbook is a good idea.
Very clear expectations on what he wants. Videos are interesting/engaging. He even gives you exam tips! The averages for the summer exams were quite low though. T.a. was picky and she missed giving me some marks for the written. Attend office hours.
Clear expectations, goes over what to study for each exam. Good sense of humor and very down to earth. Had no interest in this subject, ended up being my favourite psyc class this term.
One of my favourite profs! David has very clear expectations, is an efficient orator (class time used very effectively), and genuinely wants his students to do well (he tells us what to study for!) Lectures consist of ppt and interactive discussions/videos. He's funny, sweet, and a cutie too. Very likable and down to earth. Talk about well-rounded.
Most amazing professor ever seen. Cares about students. Exams are fair, interactive. He would help you whenever he can!!
David's super approachable and really cares about his students. He will help you as much as he can. Lectures are clear and exams are fair. He gives useful study tips before exams too. The material itself is boring but you will see his efforts to make things interesting(not quite successful though) Enjoyed his lectures b/c he's hot!
I don't know what all the hubbub is all about. Yeah David is a nice guy but he is probably one of the most boring lecturers around. Literally stands at the podium and reads off slide, after slide, after slide. I've actually almost fallen asleep on many occasions. If you can, find someone more interesting
David is very personable, but his lectures are insanely boring. I guess this must be a new thing (due to all the positive ratings), in which case I hope he changes. Super nice guy but he has made a boring class even more boring. Said he would put up movies and videos to make it more interesting and so far hasent played any. pretty dissapointing.
took psyc314 with him and thought he was a very good instructor! taking psyc305 with him...what happened? this class is SO boring...even though he's hot, he's not hot enough for me to not skip his lectures. how unfortunate. you'll do fine just reading the textbook/powerpoints
Good course. Subject matter was at times boring, but it's a theory heavy course, which is sort of unavoidable with personality psych. David is great though, super friendly and engaging. Favourite lecture was the one on dreams, and his last lecture was pretty inspirational. All in all a good experience.

I really appreciated Dr. King's teaching style. He made the class interesting and he had a really good sense of humour. He's also really helpful and easy to talk to. I'm planning on taking his 314 class I've heard really good things.
I took both Psyc 314 and 305 with David, and was beyond impressed on both occasions. He is extremely engaging during lectures, invites discussion, answers emails very thoughtfully, and is constantly setting up additional office time outside regular posted hours to accommodate his students. David is truly inspirational, he is the best prof at UBC!
Thanks for the great class! Sorry that David won't be teaching any other classes besides personalty and health. Excellent prof and really nice guy.
I took 314 with David as well. He's very likeable, organized and helpful- willing to help students as much as he can!Lectures sometime can be boring but it's normal (as the nature of the material is),but he really tries hard to make things interesting (i.e by showing videos, having discussion etc.)Overall, he's the best instructor I've had at UBC! :)
Prof David King is genuine and approachable. His tests are easier compared with PSYC 101 and 102...although some of his S/A questions can be subjective and a bit hard to answer concretely. Overall, a very good experience taking this class!
not the best
Not as boring as other people have said. Provid relevant and helpful examples. Explains the thoeretical concepts with clarity. Multiple Choice can get tricky, exams are alright. Definitely enjoyed his lectures.
Great course, great prof. Did a good job making lectures fun and interesting, and is one of the most down to earth professors I've had at ubc. Make sure you study a lot for his exams though, short answer questions can be tricky.
Great prof! One of my favorites at UBC.
Professor King engaged students a lot and his lectures were very thoughtful and a pleasure to attend. Yet, the course is much harder than personality psychology taught by him, the textbook contents being more counterintuitive. Need to read the textbook and grasp every single detail to excel in the class.
10 pts to gryffindor! If King was a gryffindor. Anyway King's notes are the best. The kind that if you miss class, you can actually get a handle on what class was about from the notes. This is REALLY RARE. He is clear about what he wants you to understand for tests. If you do that, you'll do well. Show up to class if u can cause he tries! :)
By far one of the best professors I have ever had. He is so passionate about his lectures, he makes all of them very interesting, you will never be bored. Grading is tough but fair, like most psychology courses. He does offer the chance to write a paper in addition to the mid-terms, but it is not mandatory. I would highly recommend him!
First semester at UBC and in comparison to all the other profs I had, this guy made the course idiotproof. Everything you needed to know was on his handouts for the midterm and if you sit down for help on the optional paper, you'll definitely get the marks to cushion your final. Too bad he's not teaching for another year...
David King is incredibly hot so that can get distracting, but on top of that he is an intriguing lecturer that specializes each course with a specific disease. He is very clear what is on exams, but if you skip class to ski like I did you will regret it. He is a relatively fair marker and I would recommend the class and him to anyone.
Dr. King has a passion for his lecture material. His lectures are never boring since he provides lots of video examples and often encourages the class to participate in discussions regarding the material. He gives out midterm handouts, which are very helpful, and also an optional paper to save your grade. His good looks is also a good distraction.
VERY good prof. Probably the best I've had since I started at UBC. Clear speaker and good at explaining things. Midterms are fair and he gives clear expectations on what to study for and prepare (including short answeressay questions). Super down to earth and caring. Last lecture was inspirational. Would recommend this prof for everyone.
One of the best & the most chill profs I've ever had. Explains things clearly and replies emails quickly. He gives real-life examples (sometimes with his personal life) in class and a lot of case studies which makes it easier to learn and remember the materials.
Interesting course, I though I wish he would go more in depth in his lectures.. but it is understandable due to this course being an introductory course to personality. Has a slight bias towards empirical views of personality and less on rational subjective views. He is young and relatable. His exams, especially the short answers, can be tricky
I like his lectures as they are interesting and lots of class discussion but his exams are quite picky, primarily the short answers. I find the short answers require more information than you think he is asking. There is an optional paper but it is not worth that much different from just doing the midterms alone.
Seems to have a beef with doctors & other medical professionals. I found short answers to be straightforward but the MC taken from the textbook don't relate to the lecture. Many failed the MC just because they were randomly picked from studies (most unrelated) to the class material. Great lecturer, tends to read off PP, didn't pick the right TA imo
Lecture slides are straight out of textbook and he basically just read the slides when lecturing. I came to this class with high interest on the subject and came out regretting taking it. Get ready to memorize his lecture slides because his written exams are tricky. When reading the textbook, focus on research results/outcomes.
Dr. King is a great prof, lectures are clear and concise, no trick or ambiguous questions on exams. Study, attend class and read the textbook an A is achievable.
Hard tests.
He literally copy pastes things off from the textbook and the powerpoint slides are not that helpful for understanding just have to memorize everything on them. The tests are tricky too.
Pretty decent lectures, approachable and willing to help if asked, final exam was difficult (avg 60%)
Seriously way too much information to read (pretty much the whole textbook) and the MC for all of the tests were based on research info from the book. BUT, the material for the tests were straightforward and surprisingly easy as long as you read the book. Lectures were interesting and overall, he's an engaging prof that I would take again!
Nice prof and explains concepts well but his exams were pretty difficult particularly the short answers.
i really found him un-inspirational in both classes (health and personality psyc, both of which i am interested in). He is a relatively new prof so his tests arent really fine tuned and the short answer questions are usually vague and irritating. Dry lectures, no depth, copies textbook. REally disappointed overall as someone who loves psyc.
He was quite effective at making the subject interesting and also relating the subject to real life examples, which makes the overall material more useful. The test is also relatively easy as long as you don't miss lectures and read the textbook.
Very interesting class and the best professor I had in a long time. He gives detailed instructions of what to focus when reading the textbook and gives real life examples for different personality types in his lectures.
Interesting lectures but I expected something more energetic. Tests were tricky. Overall, material was clearly presented and expectations were clear. Would have appreciated more feedback on tests, actually any feedback. Come to class ( the material is fascinating) and read ahead.
Super interesting course, I enjoyed going to every lecture. He really cares about his students, and encourages class discussion. You need the text for exams, and he even tries to make them fun. Overall a great class.
Took for psyc 314 lectures were pretty interesting but the exams were pretty tricky.
Great professor (not to mention good looking). Tests are honestly not too hard if you listen in class and read the textbook thoroughly. His expectations are clearly stated ahead of time.
Super nice guy who cares about the subject and students. Very well organized, expectations for exams are made very clear.
The downfall of most in this class is thinking it's going to be extremely easy and not putting in the time and effort for it. The topic is super interesting and so is David King, all you have to do is pay attention and review. He puts all his lectures online and provides slides on what needs to be read in the textbook. Highly recommend.
This class was extremely straight forward. I'm certainly a more learn on my own type and this class certainly allows you to do this. He's a very good lecturer, but at the same time missing a class or two is no big deal. Tests are straight forward, some open ended, some m/c. 3 tests, non cumulative. A nice relaxing class. Would certainly recommend.
The m/c is really hard. The questions are weirdly worded so read them carefully. M/c questions were not a quick evaluation of whether you've read the textbook but it requires the integration of various concepts. You need to attend lectures to be able to answer the short questions comprehensively. The final exam was by far the hardest exam.
He was just OK. Wasn't very inspirational but clearly passionate about the topic. Reads straight off the slides so attending class isn't a must. His exams are really inconsistent in terms of difficulty. Had to scale up 15% due to the poor class average on the final. Would recommend as a chill filler class just be prepared to read.
He is passionate about his object but evaluation criteria for his tests are not clear. All his tests were similar in difficulty, but class averages were extremely different. Hard to listen to him for a long time.
LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE DAVID KING. Clear and knew what he was talking about.
David King is a gem. He tries to keep the material relevant (had Donald Trump as a case study), and the material is fascinating in general. Attendance is not mandatory, but highly recommended. You can tell that he is passionate about the subject matter & lectures are interesting. If you put in the effort you will do well. 10/10 would take again.
3 exams and 1 optional paper. Midterms are 30 M/C solely based on textbook, and 5-6 short answer questions solely based on lecture notes. Dr. King explicitly lays out what to study. Missing a couple lectures won't hurt, but you should attend for the case studies. Amazing prof, highly recommend this course to anyone and everyone!
Dr. King is amazing. His lectures are never boring. He lays out everything that is expected and has clear grading criteria. I'm not a psych major but after taking health psych 314 with him, I decided to take his personality psych too. Exams are not cumulative. There are 3 exams(including final) and one optional paper. Highly recommend.
one of the most straight-forward and organized courses ever. I took two courses with him, and enjoyed how he managed everything so well, as all students knew what to study for.
The short answer questions were ridiculously difficult. His short answers are based on applied integrated concepts. It makes it difficult to study for because he does not show examples of this in his lectures. SA's are based on lectures but attending lectures wont help with them. Half the mark SAQ's on exam. Nice demeanor but made topic dull.
I took both his personality and health psych class so I think he's a great instructor. With that said, pay attention to all his case studies because they all show up on the short answer portion. Don't neglect the textbook either. Lots of concepts show up on M/C even if they were never discussed in class.
Dr. King is one of the best professors I have ever had at UBC. I took both health and personality psychology with him and I enjoyed both very much. His lectures are very interesting. His exams are very clear. You need to read the textbook for multiple choices and lectures for short answer questions. Not saying his exams are easy but you can do well
Doctor King is an amazing and inspirational professor. He is passionate about the lecture material and cares about his students' engagement and enjoyment. He always keeps the lecture material interesting and current. Attend class, pay attention, and read the textbook. Midterms were fair but the final was extremely tough.
2 midterms 1 final (all 33%) or 2 midterms, 1 final and an optional paper (each 25%), whichever gives you a higher mark. King is a great lecturer, good humor and concise with information. midterms/finals consist of short and (often vague) long questions, each 30 marks and from textbook and lectures respectively. Post-exam review session available.
PAssionate but his slides are straight out of textbook and just reads the slides when lecturing. Had high interest on the subject and I am regretting taking it. Boring, and you have to memorize his lecture slides because his MCQ are there to trick you and same goes for the written exams. When reading the text, focus on research results/outcomes.
Great prof. Some people who didn't study and did bad will complain of course but that being said exams are not that bad. Memorize answers to the lecture learning objectives at the end of the slides for the short answers and read the textbook. MC can be a bit tricky. I never studied more than 5 days before an exam yet still did fine.
I took both PSYC 305A and 314 over the summer and I absolutely LOVED both classes. Exams are tough but not once you work for it. I ended both classes with As - never missed any class and read all the required materials. Stick close to the study guides he posts online. Attend the last lecture if possible - both classes changed my life.
Encourages student discussions during lectures. Course was well-organized overall. He is rather left-winged in his political views and that seeps in every lecture that he makes (not saying that is a bad thing, just stating the fact). Dr. King seems like nice person. Class average ended up being 72, which is the highest of all my PSYC courses.
Professor King is entertaining in class but his tests were insanely hard. Your grade is only determined by tests and there is SO much content. Class discussions were tested on in the exams (as well as case studies) but he never repeats what the students so it was hard to hear what the participants had to add to the discussion.
Dr. King is a nice enough guy, but his exams are too difficult. There is so much reading, and its hard to decipher what is redundant and what we actually need to know for exams- yet he tests us on details. Its basically, don't pick the right answer but pick the right sentence cause they're all the exact same.. Take 314 with someone else.
Super engaging guy and the lectures/material is really interesting but his exams are hard. Multiple choice is taken from the textbook and doesn't focus on the big ideas just very specific facts so you have to do a lot of reading. Overall loved him but he's tough
He's a really kind person and great lecturer unlike some other psyc profs who shall remain nameless. Once you understand the format of his tests they are not bad providing you study the lecture slides and textbook. He is *extremely* clear with what to expect and there are no surprises. Thank you Dr King for another great semester!
Great prof, amazing course! If you want to learn something about yourself AND psychology, Dr. Kings Personality course is a great place to start. Loved everything about this course.
Tests were challenging but nothing you wouldn't expect from a third year course. Keeping up with reading is key, and making a solid effort with studying. David's lectures are engaging, interactive, and really make you think. I walked away from every class feeling like I had a better handle on how to improve my own health. Definitely recommend!
Second great experience with Dr. King after taking his health psych class previously. Engaging lecturer and all around a good guy!
Great prof and great course!
Dr. Kings lectures are interesting and if you show up, read the text, youll have no problem passing. He definitely makes you think!
This course was great, one of my best experiences at UBC. Content was interesting and relatable, and David was helpful and clear in his expectations. Study guide and learning objectives made things easier, and lectures were worth attending. Would recommend!
Now more than ever, this course is the time to learn: DO NOT FALL BEHIND ON YOUR READING! Easy and interesting course so long as you keep up with the textbook. Dr. King is well-spoken and makes even the most boring of topics interesting
DrKing is the best prof I have had at UBC Very engaging and knows the material well it shows in his lecturing His exams are half MCQs and half SAs MCQs are all from the textbook so get ready to read SAs are all from lectures so be prepared to attend class Easy A if you are focused
Exams were too difficult for a course with such simple course material. I attended lectures and studied my ass off and still got 50ish in both exams. Lectures were meh... Too many keeners in my class lol
David made lectures fun and interesting, course content was
David made lectures fun and inspirational, course content was interesting so showing up to lecture was never an issue. Exams were difficult and questions were extremely specific regarding the readings ie) exact dates, exact sentences, etc. Make sure you do the readings, it's definitely possible to get a good grade but you'll have to memorize a lot.
Amazing experience. This course was one of the most enlightening psychology courses in my undergrad career. Really made me learn a lot about myself and the people in my life. And David is super engaging and friendly!
Professor Kings death and dying course was one of the more interesting experiences of my undergrad. Im not a psych major but this course is a great option for anyone. The content is emotionally tough at times, but Professor King handled it maturely and respectfully. My only issue is that there was a lot of reading!
Take David Kings personality psych course, you wont be disappointed.I came out of this course with an A plus a lot more understanding of people. Exams are fair as long as you attend lectures and get a good understanding of the main concepts and how they relate.
Dr. Kings class was one of my favorites at UBC. Fun and interesting lectures, though you have to stay focused in the summer course because there are 3 exams and it moves fast. But as long as you attend lectures you should do well.
David is a great lecturer! Subject could be boring but he does a good job making it interesting and relatable. Exams are tough though so make sure you study! Three exams, half multiple choice and half written, but he provides a study guide and learning objectives. Overall a good experience!
I purchased the online access code for this course, and it worths. 3 exams, each 33%, if writing an optional paper then each 25%. Exams are 50% MC on purely textbook and 50% SA on purely lecture slides, plus a bonus question. For MC, as long as you read carefully and practice on the smart book, they are really easy. SA are quite direct.
Attendance isn't technically mandatory but I wouldn't miss too much class. Lectures are important. But David makes it interesting and engaging. Tough but good experience overall.
I really enjoyed this class. You could tell that the material could be a little boring at times, but Professor King makes it interesting. Case studies were helpful!
Favourite prof I've had at UBC. His lectures kept me awake and he knows the material well. Case studies were fun and relevant. Exams were tough but I think fair in the end. He also offers the option of writing a paper.
David is a great professor - his lectures are clear and interesting, and it's obvious he cares about his students and the course content itself. Tests are really straightforward if you study and read the textbook - he even gives you an exam study guide ahead of time to help you prepare. Would definitely recommend taking this course with him!
David had really great lectures. Lots of class discussions because it was big topics that were talked about. Marks were half based on the textbook (MC), so if you hate reading, probably not the course for you. However, it was super interesting and I really did enjoy the material!
David is super knowledgeable about his material, and that makes the lectures engaging and interesting. However, a significant part of the exams are based on textbook material, so be prepared to read. He does go a little fast through the slides sometimes, so it helps to predownload. Overall, I enjoyed him as a professor and the class in general.
while i was not a huge fan of the class material, david is a really good lecturer. bc there isn't much literature on the topic of death, it's a difficult class to teach. the textbook was extremely boring and repetitive, but his lectures were clear and well put together. also has a good sense of humor. would definitely take one of his other classes!
I've had Dr. King twice now. Lectures are engaging and informative. He is always sensitive when it comes to controversial subject matter. He's able to make a 2.5h class bearable. Pros: very little work outside of studying, no big papers. Mostly reading and textbook based. Exams are often based on lectures.
AMAZING PROF. One of the best I've had by far! The exams are based on the lecture slides and some additional readings. He has a good sense of humour and definitely makes a 3 hour lecture interesting.
David's lectures were always a pleasure to listen to, and he made it fairly clear what would be on exams (he provided a study guide). Exams were half MC and half short answer. David made the material quite easy to understand and relate to. I highly recommend this course!
David's a really nice guy and explains the material well, however we weren't graded on very much and it was pretty difficult to get proper direction on what was expected (especially from the TA). Class is mandatory.
Death and dying was an eye-opening class, and David made me excited to attend every week. The exams were fair and material was often straight forward. Although it is a psyc course, there are many perspectives used so it is a very well-rounded class. 110% recommend and excited to take more courses with David. TAKE DEATH AND DYING WITH HIM.
This is some difficult material, but he navigated it really well and encouraged very respectful and engaging conversations. Tests focus on readings and in class material so it is important to go to lectures and participate in conversations. Have to write one page "thought papers" for each unit (3 in total), work load is reasonable.
David's a great guy. Clear cut explanation of material. Very fair exams. All non-cumulative (major plus!). Gives great examples in class, very engaging lectures. Tough on short answer questions, but MCQs are all from the book- if you read the book, you will be fine. I wish he taught more upper level psyc courses!!!
This man deserves a raise. I've never met a more caring and helpful prof before. You will not regret taking his class.
His textbook is really HARD to read and the MC question would be based entirely on the textbook. He would agree on what people said in class but if you write what from the discussion on the exams, he would dock your mark. He would call traditional herbal medicine "nonsense", which is really rude and opinion-based. NOT recommended!
Took both 314/305 with David. He really knows his stuff and always incorporates interesting material. I found the 314 text to be a bit disorganized and 305 text to be a bit heavy. Lecture material is straight forward! SA was sometimes tricky but MC is straight from the text. Really have to work for a good grade but David is great.
His teaching method is the perfect balance between engaging and comprehensive. There is clarity in his teaching which makes it really easy to understand the material. The course itself was really interesting and the textbook was easy to navigate. He also allows you to make up for bad grades with an optional paper. Super understanding prof, 10/10.
Best psychology professor at UBC. I specifically make sure to choose his courses no matter the content! Very engaging lecturer & easy to get a good grade if you make sure to read the textbook. Super caring, funny and all of his content is very interesting as well. Im begging yall to take a course with him
Amazing professor! Very caring. I truly enjoyed coming to lectures. Totally am looking forward to taking more courses with him.
David is a good professor and very engaging in lectures, but not the most understanding when it comes to tests marked wrong by his TA's and therefore effecting everyone's grades. Written questions are difficult and time consuming on tests, but MC is not bad. Interesting lectures but wouldn't retake
Really fun and engaging prof, navigated often dark and hard topic of death and dying with grace, humour and respect. Always looked forward to his class. Easy if you do the assigned readings on time and pay attention during lecture, make sure to review slides and his learning goals and you will ace the exam
If there was a second part to this course, I would take it undoubtedly! Dr. King is an amazing professor and teaches concepts in a very clear and relatable way for students. Exam and paper guidelines are clear and easy to follow. Each lecture was thoughtful and it definitely got me reflecting on all sorts of things. Take his class!!!
Professor King is a great lecturer and very engaging. In order to well on his exams you must really pay attention in class and read all assigned readings from the textbook. The MC on exams is really easy but the written you must be well versed in the course material in order to do well.
David King is ma boi, absolute unit of a teacher. Best class and teacher ive ever had at ubc
He's an amazing prof and his lectures are so interesting. also makes a very respectful and interactive atmosphere in class.
Dr. King is probably one of the most caring professors I've ever had. He covers a lot of content within the class, but every lecture is extremely engaging! I would 100% recommend him as a prof!
his short answer portion of his exams are RIDICULOUSLY HARD! i usually do well on exams by reading the textbook and understanding the slides but the TAs are so nitpicky and i just couldn't for the life of me figure out what they wanted for answers. for both midterms they scaled up around 10% because the class average was soo low!
This course is exam heavy. For those people who prefer writing essays, you do have the choice to write an optional paper and the essay grade will not drag down your marks. ATTEND LECTURES!!! This is a must If you want to do decent on the short answer portion of his exam. Listen to people's answers and preferably share yours. Read the book for MC.
Dr. King is an amazing prof. He is super super caring and gives very well-rehearsed lectures. This class was very interesting and I will definitely take more classes with Dr. King in the future!
This course was so inspirational and David is genuinely the most caring prof I've had at UBC. Could not recommend taking one of his courses enough.
Extremely interesting lectures that apply the concepts taught in the textbooks to more present day topics (which makes memorising a lot of more bearable), some of the MC is kind of tricky but just make sure to focus on the main points of the textbooks. ("these are some of the reason") type of stuff tends to pop up on exams! Also very friendly!
Dr. King is one of the best profs I've had at UBC. His lectures are very engaging and he gives students a chance to discuss their opinions (although I have to say, some people in the class would go off on tangents). You have to study the textbook and his lecture slides but I found the course content super interesting and liked studying for exams!
One of the most caring and genuine profs. I found his lectures to be nothing special but it was definitely clear. The exam portion was slightly more difficult than previous psych courses I took and you will definitely be on a time crunch but he ended up GENEROUSLY scaling the final.
Classes are gynocentric and full of misandry. Makes egregious claims without presenting the proper scientific data to back it up. Class is straightforward otherwise and prof is very organized.
This is the 1st time Dr. King is teaching 320, and I am not disappointed! I took 305A with him and loved it, and was excited to take this course. He is extremely on the ball, posting all the lecture way in advance. Lectures are super engaging and I'm learning a lot about topics that are rlly important in today's society. (person below me is nuts).
The guy who said this is a gynocentric class is misleading... this class is about Sex differences and ultimately involves difficult conversations such as white privilege. Just because the first unit includes womens movements doesnt mean the class is gynocentric. David tackles these important concepts in a respectful and engaging way!
I love David's classes! He cares so much abt his students and is a really great teacher. You won't regret taking a class w him!
I've also taken 305 with him and he's a good person but I'm not a fan of him as a professor. Says a lot without saying anything at all, reads off the slides and adds an "essentially" or "you know" every 2 seconds to seem like he's not. Tests and assessments are pretty easy but if you care about the quality of lectures then I wouldn't recommend.
Prof. King did an amazing job teaching PSYC-320 this summer. The class is thought-provoking and Prof. King is engaging, thoughtful, and helpful in every way possible. Exams are challenging but not impossible. Make sure you don't overlook his lectures files and videos (even when taught online)!
Attendance wasn't mandatory since the class was taught online during COVID, but I wouldn't skip out on any content! As long as you stay on top of things and participate as much as possible, you'll do fine. Dr. King made the class a lot of fun and was really engaging, I just wish it would have been taught in person!
I took this course in 2019W. 3 exams worth 33% each with one optional paper to boost your grade but I didn't need it. He provides a study guide that clearly lays out what you need to study. Exams were very straightforward, but make sure you study! But super genuine prof and very understanding/caring. So glad I took this course with David!
I've taken both online and in person classes with David King and there is a clear difference. +He knows what he's doing and is an experienced online lecturer - I feel like you even get more guidance with online. - All his classes are very test heavy which I disagree with in terms of a psyc course. Overall a good experience if you put in the work.
Took distance learning personality psyc(pandemic online), weekly quizzes and final exams were 70% based on the textbook and 30% from slides. So, no surprises, all MC, some mc were super tricky requiring deep thinking, but psyc is no GPA booster, you must work hard for the A, King is a very straightforward and efficient prof, tougher on the exam.
Although we are currently taking online because of COVID, PSYC 314 with David made my first term at UBC special. He is clear in his lectures and it was fun reading the TB he wrote.
Dr. King is a skilled lecturer. His material is interesting and well presented. He is puts a great deal of effort into his courses. He provides clear instructions, examples of good work and practise quizzes. Excellent professor and great human, too!
It's my first semester at UBC and this is by far my favourite class. Dr. King makes these classes so enjoyable and does not make the assignments unnecessarily difficult. The TAs mark a bit hard but if you put in work and read over the material and listen to his fun lectures, then you're sure to do well on the exams and assignments.
Very inspirational, most of the important material is on the lecture slides so long as you watch the lecture and take your notes you are gonna pass. Grades kinda hard but the psychology department requires the class average to be around 68% so is really not his fault. Very hot, he's the kinda guy you wanna go grab a beer and have a chat with.
By far my favorite psychology class I've ever taken! Dr. King is a great lecturer and the course content is super interesting. This class does require a lot of textbook reading, but I honestly didn't mind it too much as the content was enjoyable.
I found the exams to be a bit gritty on the details . Although open book, you need to read the textbook very closely and take good notes. The final is not cumulative. Dr. King is very accommodating and wants his students to succeed so don't be afraid to ask for any extensions.
Lectures mostly acted as an extension of content explained in the textbook, with the textbook containing an unreasonably large amount of content.
I've taken him before and I really like taking him online since he speaks very clearly unlike a lot of other profs which makes it so much easier to watch the lectures especially since I like to listen on at least 3.5x speed. I wish his lectures covered more tested material though because it's mostly textbook and I can read without being in uni
Love this professor! Have taken 3 of his classes and would definitely take more of his courses again. Engaging conversations in lecture and his teaching style is really informative. Lectures are always fun and entertaining. Be prepared to work, but he's a fair grader. Non-biased class, open to all. Awesome course!
The second class I have taken w/ King and he is one of my favorite profs at UBC. I find the content and lectures super interesting. The textbook is pretty heavy reading but it's information that I found easy to apply. King is also very approachable and you can tell he enjoys teaching.
David is a great prof. Very organized lectures, exam questions are clear, term paper was graded fairly, and he made online learning easier than most profs. Lectures are slightly longer than they need to be but are still very interesting.
Dr. King is hands down one of the best profs I've had at UBC. He is extremely clear in his grading and goes into a lot of detail with what he expects. He is also very patient and caring towards his students. If you do what he says, and do the reading, you will do very well!! He is very fair!
David is one of my favourite professors at UBC. Not only are his classes interesting, he truly cares about his students, and is so organized it made online learning so much easier! This class specifically was my favourite course I took with him and I think the way he approached the subject matter was amazing. Tests and assignments are fair as well!
This class has been a gem within the bleak world of Zoom university. It was refreshing to arrive at my laptop to be met with the sweet voice of Dr. King. He is an intelligent and caring prof, who makes difficult topics more accessible and understandable to everyone. For once, I can tell the info I learned will really stick with me forever.
Dr. King is super nice! He is very clear about what is expected from us. Even in this online environment, he made us feel welcome. He was accessible outside of class and always ready to answer any questions and clarify anything! This course was very engaging and inspiring.
Take a class with him! I really enjoyed his lectures, they were easy to understand and interesting. He made the expectations for papers and tests widely known and easy to follow. iIt's obvious he cares about teaching and his students, and it made his class be my favourite class this term!
I fully recommend 320 and 305 with David. He cares about his students, inspires change, and is extremely organized and clear with course material and expectations. If you're looking to be genuinely interested in the content and to learn more about yourself through the course, take his class. He's full of love for you and you'll love him back.
Dr. Kings psychology of sex differences class was one of my favourites at UBC. Not only was the course itself incredibly interesting, but Dr. King presented it in a way that was balanced, inclusive, and really supportive of his students. He also took a number of steps to make expectations on assignments and exams very clear. Ill miss this class!
DrKing is very knowledgeable teaches with so much conviction and compassion I have taken every course he teaches 320 is a very intense course lot of content but DrKing makes his lectures super clear and the grading criteria is straightforward tests are quite hard though but this prof is out of this world GREAT Take his class without a doubt
First class with David King, out of two as Im also taking Health Psyc with him. Hes is very fair. Only 3 tests all non-cumulative and they are 40 mc questions open book. His writing assignments are fair and only expect you to think critically of the material at hand. Def recommend him, and excited for my class w him in Summer Term 2.
I am so glad I ended up making it into the course. I had him last year and I have him again for summer term 2 and aside from all the good things everyone else has said on here, I LOVE THE PACE OF HIS LECTURES. He is the ONLY professor I had at UBC that speaks at a GOOD pace where I can actually take notes without having to pause every other second.
He is the best lecturer Ive ever had - slides arent blocks of text - he speaks to his slides at the perfect speed. The textbook chapters reaffirm and add to lecture content. I found the tests and exams to be a good indicator of your knowledge and effort you put into the course. I found 314 to be a bit harder in terms of grading than 305 however.
David is AWESOME. I took a 200-level psych class w him last year, and he delivered the course SO WELL. His Canvas course sites are impeccable, his syllabus is so comprehensive, and he delivers easy-to-follow lectures that are engaging. This term started today, and I'm already blown away by how organized his PSYC 305 Canvas is. THANK YOU DR. KING!!
He's amazing. I loved learning about personality psychology, and his lectures are great.
Dr. King is great - dude knows his stuff and has fun engaging with students in and out of lectures. Lectures are communicated in a easy-to-understand way, bring in relevant examples, and I'd be glad to take a class from him again.
Honestly, David King marry me. Hands down my favourite professor I've had at UBC, his lectures are so well-thought-out and really engaging to the point where I'm truly invested in what he has to say on the topics. On that note, holy does he know his stuff, like any topic he had something to say. He amazes me! Will 100% take another of his courses!
Really good prof. The topic of the course was really deep and sensitive but he handled it masterfully. Really nice guy who cares about his students and respects their ideas. Exams are mostly based on the lectures and are on the tougher side. The papers were marked very strictly.
Read the damn textbook and memorize, memorize, memorize. The tests are just based on the textbook. That being said, this guy is a great lecturer. The only time I've cried in a lecture was in his class. I would highly recommend showing up for class.
David is one of the most understanding profs I have ever had. His lectures are always super interesting and always leave you with something to think about. He also is super flexible as long as he knows you are putting in an effort into the class. 10/10
Dr. King is an amazing professor! His lectures are very engaging and much fun (in a good way). The material is heavy but he manages to put his own perspective on it to somehow make it much easier to grasp. I am, honestly, very sad he teaches so few classes at ubc
One of my favourite professors I've had at UBC! His lectures are clear, he's super funny and sweet & makes the material engaging and interesting. If you study you'll do fine. It's really important that you communicate with the TA's cause I find that they're pretty tough graders and extremely picky with grammar, so review any feedback.
Love his lectures and how he organizes his class. 3 non-cumulative tests that are pretty simple as long as you use the study guide he provides, and he gives you an optional paper to do if you want to boost your grade. the readings are pretty long, but he gives outlines of things to focus on which makes them a bit more digestible.
Honestly an easy but very interesting course, worth taking
Dr David King truly teaches clearly and straight to the point. His lectures are super organised and easy to follow. However, I do believe that his course is a bit tough to score in considering the fact that the class average did not cross 72-73 over the course.
very good professor - very detailed explanations and a pretty straightforward course. make sure you actually read the textbook as there are some things in there that are tested on and not mentioned in lecture. overall would take a course with dr king again as he seems super chill and loves his job
Prof King is a good lecturer. But his exams are a ridiculous. His multiple choice questions are only from the textbook, and his short answers are from the lectures. He provides a study guild for the textbook but it's basically read the entire chapter and ignore the extra boxes on the side. I recommend finding another professor for this class.
2nd time with Dr. King & I love listening to him lecture! He's passionate about what he teaches and is very knowledgeable. Yes, it's a difficult course and requires dedication/effort (not a GPA booster), but it's not impossible. The course is based on 3 exams (+ optional paper), but it's no secret. Simply don't take it if exams aren't your thing.
In my opinion, King is a great professor but isn't perfect. He's a great lecturer and really cares about his students. However, he does not teach the textbook and expects you to know everything that does not overlap (which is a good 70%). The three exams are both lecture and textbook heavy (50% textbook, 50% lecture) so be prepared to read. A lot.
Dr. King is a great lecturer and is extremely knowledgeable about the field of health psychology, which made going to class a really positive experience. That being said, there was too much effort to hit a low class average on exams, which ruined the whole experience for me. Doing well is possible but requires a lot of rote memorization.
A passionate and kind professor who is well-versed in his field. A very captivating and interesting person to listen to lecture as well! With this in mind, this course is extremely content-heavy and the exams are very memorization-dependent. However, I was still able to enjoy the class and recommend it to anyone looking for a challenge.
Dr. King is one of my favorite psyc profs and one of the most accommodating and understanding profs Ive had. Yes you have to read and yes the exams are tough but its a 3rd year class. This class was eye opening for me on so many levels and if youre interested in health or healthcare its a must!
I have enjoyed 2 of Dr. King's classes and I wish there were others that I could take. His exams are tough but manageable, if you put in the time. Questions are split between lecture and textbook readings, but there's a lot of overlap. The optional paper to help boost your grade is a nice touch, and really helped me in the end.
Would definitely recommend taking this course with Dr. King. Lectures were very well organised & delivered. He made sure that the content (which can become a little heavy smtimes) is engaging. One of the best profs I have had so far. Not the easiest to score (esp the reflection assignments), but that shouldn't be the only criterion to pick classes.
Incredibly knowledgeable regarding the scientific literature and course content. Very kind and approachable. Overall amazing prof
Despite his wonderful personality, his criteria for case study assignments were not the clearest and his exams are a real struggle. They are ridiculously specific and focus on tiny details. I spent over 40 hours studying the material prior to the final and felt as if 2/3 of the final had more to do with logic that the actual course material.
Dr. King is a great professor and encourages fascinating (though sometimes overly lengthy) discussions in class about important topics. Unfortunately the textbook (which he cowrote) is extremely long and redundant. It seems like the textbook is an extensive list of individual research findings citing a new article with every sentence.
Dr King has to be my favourite prof so far. He is an amazing prof and very caring. He also brings his dog to class once in the term which is such a highlight. Overall, he is very knowledgeable and kind but most importantly he is a very nice and helpful person.
His lecture isn't particularly outstanding. He made enormous effort to make the exam range and learning objectives as explicit as possible. He would provide practice short answer questions and multiple choice questions for each of the 3 exams. Overall a very good choice if you enjoy coming to an exam that you know exactly what to expect.
I am sad his class his over. One of the best profs at UBC.
Prof King is amazing, wholesome, and passionate in his field of Health Psychology. The content of this course was inspiring - he explains the concepts, theories, and academic research in a detailed easy-to-understand manner. This was my first term in upper-year level psychology and am genuinely happy that I took it with Dr. King! A+ to him :)
Dr. King is an amazing prof. His lectures are very engaging and he's super knowledgeable about the content. I do really wish he would provide recordings but I understand that's not feasible for every prof. Overall super good experience with him and 314
Unclear and vague assignment guidelines which is only made worse by harsh and nitpicky grading from TA. Why set out a page requirement if you actually wanted a word count requirement?
Awesome lectures! David King proved that he really knew what he was talking about. He had lots of availability, always very respectful, and gave lots of room for discussions and questions. Lecture material and presentation was always interesting. Only 3 exams in this class (plus an optional paper), make sure to pay attention and read the textbook.
David King is a gem but don't go into this class thinking you'll do well because even though this class is a 200-level course, it's harder than some 3rd and 4th-year psychology classes I've taken. Tons of readings. You need to go to class if you don't want to fall behind. The assignments are easy but it also depends on your TA. Exams are difficult.
Took this class online during the summer and you should too! Such fascinating content and Professor King teaches it very well. I found the assignments fun and engaging. At times, lectures could get long, but since it was online, I could pause and take a break. A great learning experience for someone who can't sit still for more than 30 minutes!
I had a wonderful experience with David King. He is passionate about what he teaches, encourages class discussions, and teaches the content in a manner that makes sense to everyone. Lots of reading beforehand, but it is useful for the exams (which are non-cumulative). He's a kind person and easy to reach out too.
Great prof but exams are tough so study hard.
Great prof but was exams were tough. He was really passionate about the course and tied in current events to make the content more meaningful. His online lectures were PACKED with content so get ready for tons of notes. Course consisted of weekly quizzes, 3x1 page assignments and final. Exams are application based; make sure to understand concepts.
By far the hardest course I have taken so far. The average had to be 70% so I understand why it was made to be so difficult, but still. He is a great prof but was BRUTAL on midterm questions. He is very thorough in teaching but most of the concepts taught are theories and have multiple variations. Beware, you must study ALOT to pass.
Take good notes of the lecture videos and do some reading on the textbook (light amount), and you will succeed.
I would take this prof again for a different class, but 208 seemed very content heavy and the lectures were a bit bland in my opinion. However, I think Dr King is amazing as a person and psychologist. One unfortunate thing was we only had 1 TA so marking took a long time. 3 short essays, 2 midterms, and 1 final (non cumulative). Get ready to read
Dr. King is an amazing prof! He's super engaging and very knowledgable and passionate about the field. The one downside is that his exams are VERY hard
Amazing prof! David is very caring and easy to talk to. His lectures are engaging and the course is super structured. Overall, 10/10
Dr. King used to be my fave prof (I have taken 208/305/320) but this course was the worst! Weekly quizzes were difficult even after doing the reading, watching the lecture, and reviewing. It is just simply not enough time to read the questions/process information with less than a minute per question. Papers marked extremely hard by the TA to scale
Dr King is very passionate and wants you to learn a lot so there is a lot of info to memorize for this course. I found it tough to study because a lot of concepts were similar but slightly different. He was definitely a great professor but I think his slides and overall topics could be refined and reorganized to be more clear. Worth taking still
This is my first online course with David (took an f2f course with him before). As always, he's very caring, funny, and just a great dude. His online lectures do get very long with little breathing room for notes, so they take a long time to get through. Tests are also brutal as always. But you can tell he knows his stuff and cares about his work.
Dr. King is a great lecturer. He is extremely professional and his courses are very organised. He truly cares about his students and is always ready to help.
He is overall a really great guy, no denying his personality - caring and respectful and wanting students to succeed is likeable, however I found the exams to be terribly difficult. The content seems easy and straightforward but the way the exams were written and worded made my grade drop. Tough grader for sure and doesn't emphasize that enough.
Everyone is saying the same thing - he is a great prof but no one is talking about how hard his homework is/exams are!! The content seems fun and interesting - it is, but the exams are too detail-focused. As a student taking a full course-load this course is definitely the one you would want to prioritize even if you are a psych major. It's Hard.
Professor King is very passionate about the material in the course, but the course itself is very dense. It feels like someone is shoving information down my throat. There's so much information to memorize that everything is going in one ear and out the other.
Dr. King is a great prof; very clear about his grading criteria, and I appreciate the learning objectives/practice tests. The readings are long/time consuming, but it balances out with the shorter lectures. Only one exam (in addition to 10 quizzes worth 1% each, and 3 assignments), which was a little stressful since it's 45% of your final grade
Caring, great study guide, straightforward and helpful application exercises, quizzes are fair! Lecture slides are organized, Dr. King is great! The readings are dense with details which may screw me slightly on the final, but UBC will have a meltdown without their 70 average so he has to make it challenging somehow. Definitely take his class!
Dr. King is a fantastic lecturer and I genuinely really enjoyed his class. I found him very engaging, and extremely knowledgable on the topics discussed in class. I do really hope he starts psych cafe up again. I've heard lots of good things about it and It sounds like a fun time. Look forward to taking a class with him again :)
Dr. King is a really great prof. He makes his lectures super engaging and the content of the course is really interesting. You can also tell that he really knows his stuff. His tests are hard though and 3 non-cumulative exams make up your entire grade unless you write an option paper so be ready to study hard for them.
His lectures are top tier for UBC. I never was bored the entire time, and I learned a lot from this course which I dont say a lot. However the exams are very hard, you are gonna have to read that for a long time cuz a lot of questions is gonna be content only found in the textbook. But I still like him hes probably the better profs I've had here.
He is an excellent individual, possessing commendable expertise and integrity. I strongly recommend him to anyone pursuing interests in this field.
I took 314 & 320 as online courses in the same term and I recognize that was a mistake. While I appreciated the content and learned a fair deal from Dr. King, these classes are hard! There's 10 weekly quizzes, 3 written assignments and a final worth 45%. Be prepared to read and study a lot, and don't expect a GPA booster.
goes through lecture content really fast, something i liked because it kept me attentive. no homework, exam heavy. readings were really long, he had us read chapters of the textbook (25-50 pages each chapter) & 15 academic articles, then took out small details (didn't cover in lecture) from the textbook to put in ambiguous multiple choice / saq.
Make sure to take notes in class, textbook is unlike typical psyc texts, much easier to read. Posts articles to read in addition to the text but he goes over the key details in lectures and this was sufficient for exams. Exams are very fair as long as you put in the effort to review. This is my fourth class with David, great prof!
This was my third online course with Dr. King and I love how organized and easy to follow everything is. He provides PowerPoint slides with lecture recordings so the content is still really engaging. This was one of my last classes at UBC but one of my favourites. Only complaint is that I wish it had been in person!
His name is KING for a reason. Best psyc prof at UBC. I've never seen a prof who genuinely seemed so passionate about what he was teaching and it showed.
Dr. King's health psyc class was one of my favorite psyc classes at UBC. There's a lot of content but it is a 3rd year course and I found most of it really interesting and applicable to every day life. Exams test both lecture and textbook content and although they overlap, there's a lot of material in lectures that's not in the book!
As far as online courses go, this class kept me engaged. It's the second line course that I took with Dr. King and the organization and layout all work well for me. Everything is well organized and clear and the content is really interesting. Weekly quizzes are easier than the final exam, but it is open book, so manageable.
Amazing prof and lecturer! I will admit I have come to realize this as I cram for the final exam and watch skipped lectures oops. As he mentions, to do well in this course is to really engage in the material.. do the readings, look at the study guides he posts, and take notes on lectures. Wish I listened to his advice earlier lol.
Only downside is the unreasonable amount of readings. Do not recommend this class if you are taking a full course load. I wish I had more time to engage with the course as the material is actually very interesting. Great prof and lecturer too! If you stay on track and put in the time/effort you can do well.
As an individual who has a learning disability, Ive never had a professor who had such clear criteria and lecture structures that made it easy for me to learn! Highly recommend Dr. King!
Dr. King is very kind and caring, but this course was tough! There were many reading, and assignments were marked harshly. I would have preferred the previous format with several smaller exams rather than one cumulative final. The TA was also not very available to meet and provided vague feedback, which made it harder to improve on assignments.
Dr. King is exceptional! As a student who faced severe health challenges this academic year, I never expected an A, but as another student said, "his name is KING for a reason." His lectures were inspirational and practically connected to the real world. Passionate, accommodating, and caring, I highly recommend his class for an enriching experience
Dr. King is a fantastic professor and an engaging lecturer. I loved taking PSYC 305 with him. I understand why he doesn't record lectures but it can make the class a bit unaccessible. The textbook is LONG and testable, which was not my favourite. However, Dr. King provides great study tools and I would still recommend taking the course with him.
personality is not my favorite subject but David makes it interesting enough. engaging lectures and a fantastic person. The downside: the textbook is A LOT and he tests heavily on it. Exams are on the more difficult end. With that said I would still recommend cause he's passionate and helpful and sometimes you get to see dogs. will take again.
I had a friend recommend this class to me and I was not disappointed. The material kept me engaged despite it being an online course and Dr. King was incredibly helpful any time that I reached out. Lectures are recorded and can be watched any time, but weekly quizzes help keep you on track.
The 1 page application exercises make the class seem like a breeze, but beware. Dr. King is very strict about the 1 page max, yet the rubric expects you to go into depth that requires 2-3 pages of writing minimum. You're getting marks docked for not being specific enough/being too general. I ONLY HAVE 1 PAGE ofc its general
David King truly is the king! What a wonderful, kind, approachable, and knowledgable human being! He cares so deeply and there is no one better to teach a class about dying. One of the most valuable courses I ever took.
Prof. King is engaging and helpful. The readings are extensive but his lectures break things down well. I found Unstuck ai to be a great supplement for study prep. Overall, a rewarding but challenging course.
...............
A good lecturer but not a qualified professor. Purposely controls the average grades (on subjective essays). Gives a low grade on 1st and pretends that we improve on 2nd (everybody can see). Was dismissive of students. Quizzes were reasonable, but the essays should not weigh that much. If not in a course I will enjoy his lectures very much.
david king is my goat
Psychology should be a rigorous discipline, but David routinely asserted his own conclusions and points of view without clarifying what is implied by research or simply conjecture. He speaks well so you think everything he says is based on strong research but he never talks about how studies were conducted so students can critique the findings.
One of the best profs I've had at UBC and one my favourite classes to date! Tests are tough but manageable and learning objectives are well laid out. Optional paper gives you some flexibility in how you're graded (much appreciated!)
Professor King made a difficult topic (death) interesting and engaging, and I will forever remember this course at UBC and recomend it to everyone. Most of the course is lecture based with pretty light reading. Just go to class and study the slides and you should do well!
I'm sad that this is the last class of dr. King's that I can take! For anyone concerned with social factors in psych, I would not miss out on this course. It added so much to my knowledge. It's an online course (not my preference) but I found the organization better than other online courses and assessment fair. Dr. King is also really supportive.
He used a long and dense textbook that contained a lot of detailed information that seemed to be internally contradictory. His class takeaways were generic and bland points that didn't seem to steer us towards learning anything substantial. Would also contradict himself in class lectures. Maybe it's just too much material and muddy subject matter.
Dr. King's death and dying class was amazing! This was one of the most interesting courses I've taken at ubc. Dr. King is also really accommodating and made this term so much easier for me to manage.
Dr. King is sweet, but his lectures sometimes feel like he's just reading off the slides. Tests are fair—just make sure to read the textbook for good grades, as the lectures are a mini version of it. I did learn some interesting things, and I'd recommend the class. It's not too hard, not too easy.
I would recommend this class to anyone in a health field or planning to work in health care. David is lovely and really accommodating if you need additional support (doesn't give you a hard time like some profs). I found his lectures engaging and he presents a lot of new material that's not in the textbook. Go to class if you want to do well!
This course has come to an end and I'm seriously gonna miss Dr. King's lectures…kept me engaged and sparked a real interest in psychology that I need to explore further! The course is mainly lecture based and assigned textbook readings, but I found the layout and direction from Dr King very helpful. Highly recommend!
I've taken him twice. Overall very caring and clearly well-versed in the topic. However the content is quite heavy and you will be tested on specific details. All the content is on the slides, which he reads off of. Marking on essays is very strict and for this class at least, makes up half your grade. His teaching style maybe just isn't for me.
Third class with Dr. King and I was not disappointed. Health psyc was a nice way to round out my psyc degree, and I found he handled some difficult topics well (especially discussions of health disparities and Indigenous health). Yes there was a lot content but it was comparable to my other psyc classes. Also a really nice guy!
Great course, great person. Highly recommend.
This was a challenging course at times, but David is a great lecturer and a very kind and thoughtful person. He provides a study guide and practice tests to help with exam prep, and was really helpful when needed. I also found that he explained things really well during class. The optional paper was great for me as I don't do as well on MC tests.
I liked that we had the chance to earn bonus marks on exams.
Lots of textbook readings and we were tested on small details.
Had a great time in Dr. King's health psyc class this term! Interesting content and exams mainly tested lectures. Reading was comparable to my other psyc classes. Also lots of study and prep help Dr. King is really accommodating
One of the classes I am most thankful to take this year at ubc is dr Kings death and dying course. So much great discussion, I was truly inspired every day and dr King was so nice and supportive. I look forward to taking more of his courses in the future!
This is the 3rd online class of David's that I've taken. I really like his organization. I find it easy to keep track of and keeps me engaged but never feels overwhelming. I wish David had more online options to choose from!
The tests were long and hard.
Great lectures and slides but class discussions can get long and a bit irrelevant to the course material. Still an amazing and smart prof. Don't recommend doing his optional essay if you are already above an A-/A as it likely will not boost your grade.
Showed a video of someone with COVID complications who had refused vaccination. Showed a Jimmy Kimmel clip of gluten free folks who didn't know what gluten was. The result was not to support a discussion about why people make different health choices as would be right for a class like this but instead to objectify. Discussion was narrow not open.
Great lecturer and the content is interesting. I found the exams to be quite difficult
Great at lecturing and the content is very interesting. The exams are quite hard
Content was super interesting and Dr. King was super accessible for questions and feedback! Only thing was the final was worth like 40-50% and was hard. Also was based a lot on the textbook
I graduated in 2021 and took 3 classes with Dr. King (health and personality psyc, and death and dying). Now that I've completed grad school and am starting law school soon, I often find myself looking back and missing the simplicity of undergrad. This is one of the best prof's in the UBC psyc department, take a class with him!
Dr. King's lectures were amazing and genuinely so interesting. I could tell he had a lot of passion for the subject he teaches, and students were very invested in his lectures. Beware of tough exams, take notes and study ahead of time.
The material was pretty expansive in scope so nothing really went in depth. I find it difficult to describe what I actually learned in this class except that stress is associated with poorer health outcomes.
I love Dr. King so much. He is passionate and truly inspirational. Unfortunately, His textbook is incredibly dense. Although he exempts some parts of it, this was by far the most stressful textbook I've read. Each chapter is only 30-40 pages, but it takes 10-15 min to truly understand the material. The density took away from my final takeaways:(
I think David King was an amazing professor. If you show up to lectures, and read the textbook you will be fine. His classes are very engaging and he provides many resources for you to succeed such as providing a study guide and practice which are extremely helpful. I really recommend any of his classes!!
The course was heavy on theory and it seemed hard to apply to real life or a health professional practice setting.
David is caring, kind, knowledgable and respectable. He respects all comments even when they're wrong and loves participation. Perfectly designed slides have all the info, plus extensive study guide. Exams are fair, textbook is required (boring, dense & long), no recordings, optional paper. Not my fav class, but fav prof for his character/demeanor!
Fairly typical PSYC course, graded with 3 mandatory tests. Dr. King also allowed HSP for extra credit and had an optional end-of-term paper that could only improve your grade. Would take this class and professor again without hesitation.
Probably the most caring prof out there among all my psych courses. The course is straightforward and testable material is clearly outlined. The course structure is very concise and easy to digest. The prof is very accommodating and helpful if you're struggling with the content and provides resources for you to achieve better in class.
DAVID IS THE KING!!! Totally love his lectures (though it be better if he recorded them). My guy is humble and caring, tries his best to adapt to student's needs. Makes very clear study guide for exams which makes studying a lot easier. the lectures are quiet packed with information so I would recommend recording it on ur own, and read the textbook!
This professor's course takes a lot of time, but it's totally worth it. professor David makes the knowledge points vivid and clear, and the grading criteria is very detailed, which makes getting the desired grades much easier, definitely one of the best UBC Psychology professors
David is not only a truly talented lecturer, but also an incredible person. Its clear how much work he puts into his courses. There are underlying narratives structured into his lectures so that you walk away with a sense of inspiration to make the world a better place, and not just a grade. Thank you David, I will miss your courses a ton!
He is such a good lecturer and extremely experienced and knowledgable in the field, but the readings were soooo heavy as he would often assign 2 chapters a week. This made studying much more difficult and his exams werent as straightforward as youd think theyd be
This course had a lot of readings and focus on lectures. If you follow the guide though you will do very well and learn so much. Exams are difficult though and I wish it was more creative form of testing students because the way we are being tested causes stress.
This course was very interesting, and David is knowledgeable and passionate on personality psych. Three exams (non-cumulative) with MCQ and short answer. Optional paper reweighs the exams if it bumps up your grade. Reading load was manageable, overlapping with lecture content. Use the study guide for exam prep and watch for textbook only concepts.
He maintains a pleasant demeanour and presents well, but content of the course is vapid and rarely becomes substantive and factual. His slides - every fact is backed up by a small 30yo study and later refuted. Ignorant discussion on indigenous risks of psych disorders borders on racist. Makes psychology appear like a magazine and not a science.
Many test questions focused on little details, sometimes just a single sentence mentioned once in the textbook (which is extensive!). He also blamed the class for a lack of engagement multiple times without acknowledging how engagement depends on teaching. Also skip the optional paper it's graded very harshly and not worth the effort.
Dr. King is kind, thoughtful & an engaging lecturer. The textbook readings weren't fun though. While I understand consistent reading is par for the course in a 300-lvl class, the textbook is quite dense while not contributing much that isn't already in lectures. If only textbook readings were specific sections vs whole chapters!
fun guy, dressed up for halloween and brought his dog too!! however his lectures are mostly reading off slides and i've found myself getting bored frequently. i've gone up to him after class to ask questions but he doesn't answer them very well. great person overall, just not the type of prof i'd want to have again
So much information is thrown at you at once. He's a great prof and accessible outside of class but the information could be presented better.
King gives clear info on what and what is not tested on exams, answers questions thoroughly. Exams are very fair, in my opinion, as they are drawn from lecture and textbook (textbook can be kind of heavy). This course had a lot of information; however, King made it clear at the beginning that the info is condensed for the short summer semester.
Great professor, not sure how it gets better than this. If you're majoring in psychology, or just have an interest, definitely take his class. He really does provide everything you need to succeed. Textbook can be dense sometimes, but in my experience, lectures seem a tad bit more important. Definitely study both if you want to succeed.
David King is a nice guy but has some very strong far-right political beliefs that he likes to impose on his students. Every lecture it seems he would bring up how sneaky Mark Carney is and how "woke" UBC is as an institution. These opinions got repetitive and boring very quickly.
my goat...
Comments above on politics are troll. He's a typical liberal professor. Anyway, harsh grading on exams and need to spend a lot of time on reading textbook to get tiny details for MCs. Quite frustrating since it's not about understanding the harder concepts but more about reading the textbook thoroughly.
Dr. King teaches an incredible class that is highly entertaining. Admittedly though it was my hardest class this semester even with taking 217 and physics. The exams are very specific with many fine details being tested. However, the difficulty is made up for by just how much you learn from Dr. King throughout the semester
Organized, decent at responding to emails. Effort is placed into materials, raising important reflection questions. Emphasizes his interests such as politics and narcissism. My only complaint would be that some lecture material is not updated (likely recorded from previous years), and discussion boards could have been encouraged more.
