Worst teacher I've ever had at ECU
Doesn't care at all about his students...
Good at explaining information that will be on the tests, but boring at times.

Honestly the worst teacher I've ever had. Doesn't care about his students, or the grade that anyone gets. All he cares about is making sure his students don't cheat. You'll have to go to every class, and take better than perfect notes. Goodluck.

Do not take this class! It's horrible and his tests are soo hard. For one of his test's, he didn't even go over 2 of the chapters. He rambles a lot about stuff that is not important or on the test. You are graded on 5 very hard tests and nothing else.
Do not take this professor. He is hard as anything...he only talks about his adventures and where he has found things. I had an A in lab and a D in his course. If you want to take a biology, take another professor.
had him years ago as an undergraduate, but still remember how awful he was... needs a PhD some kind of bad, and just has absolutely NO teaching presence at all... don't take this one.
This class is difficult. I made an A, but only through sweat and tears. He seems to want students to fail in his course. His lectures are boring, and the tests are ridiculous!
He teaches like we're majoring in Biology. It's ungodly hard. I never had as much trouble in any class. If you like F's then take the class.

Very hard teacher, Tests are impossible and unpredictable. Lectures are very boring to the point where you have to fight to stay awake. Only wished I would have checked this site out before i chose his class.

The first words out of his mouth were I'm very into Forestry...How interesting good this man be?! He finds a way to bring forestry into everything...even if its unrelated. If you study, you could get a C on his tests but its hard because its soooooo

I liked him as a person but God, how that man likes plants. It's creepy. I hate biology and never studied and still got a C. There are probably easier profs to take but I liked watching him embarrass people who were late or who tried to cheat.

I'll admit, the guy is not accessible, but if you go to class and simply COPY the notes from the wall and read them once the night before an exam, you'll be OK. I made an A. The ones that failed didn't show up, and a good class doesn't reward the absent.
This course was horrible. The tests are unfair and very unreasonable. Going to class & studying insanely wouldn't help you pass this course. He knows so much information about biology that he just talks about everything! It's crazy. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!

Knowles is very knowledgeable in science, he's lectures do tend to drone on like any kind of lecture in a field you don't like, the tests were easy, he gives quizes to help bring your exam grades up, and he usually has a curve. Easy A for me.

He is MEAN! In order to pass his tests just write down all of the notes he gives in class. Study the notes and true not to pay attention to what he says during his lecture; it will just confuse you. He knows so much biology he constanly jumps around.(bad)
Not necessarily easy, but knows what he is talking about, and if you study you will pass. This is college folks, and biology isn't supposed to be easy. Study and get it done, and you will do well in his class. He is stern, but fair.

All you do is listen to him talk. I hope you don't fall asleep. If you have a problem with something go talk to him during his office hours. You can do good in this class just don't wait to study the day before the exam. And go to class because he gives extra credit cause most people don't come.

i was neutral about this class till i found out how Knowles taught. He puts notes on the overhead and before you can copy a sent.he takes them down to put up a diagram you cant even see let alone understand what its about. then he has really hard tests on info. we didnt learn.avoid him at all costs.

One word...boring.I love bio, but he made it a miserable hour and 15mins. Tests were not hard if you studied (and not just the night before), but he really is boring with his overhead projector and diagrams. And he doesn't help you of you ask for help. don't even think about leaving the class early!

D. Knowles is the devil -- or at least close to it. He is mean and sucks and boring and annoying. He is a jerk. I was an honors, AP taking student in high school, got an A+ in bio where they taught HARD stuff...then I got a D here. DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS. IT'S GPA SUICIDE.

Much better than the teacher I had before him. For the second time around it was a good class. V. informative. But you have to work hard for your grade. It happens sometimes...work. You'll do fine. Gave a great study session for the final and I pulled out a B on that.

Dr. Knowles is not a very hard professor. The only flaw is that the his class only has 4 exams. The best thing about the class are the quiz points. Whatever points you get on your quizes are added to your exam grade. I pulled a high B in the class and I don't even like biology. I think it sucks!!!!
I got an A, but he didn't really help me that much. He is very unreasonble and has many pet peeves. Read the book and study the graphs. Know the notes by heart.
He's an okay guy. The class is easy and i hate science, i pulled off a B and i only studied the night before the exam. He has lots of extra credit opportunities but u have to show up for class to get 'em. he can be a picky person but he doesn't do attendence and is an easy course.
knowles doesn't relate all his knowldege in normal terms for us to learn it. he's anal about things, and isnt very easy to talk to. i got a D in his class, and i got stuck w/ him. we'll see how it goes! it really sucks though, having him again! study the notes religiously to do good on the tests.
Didn't like him, not reasonable, doesn't let you see tests to see what you missed. I went to class and studied and still struggled, not a very good teacher, too much material to know at one time.
Dr. Knowles is not a bad guy at all.If you go to class and not talk or play on your laptop you can gain from being there.I struggle with Bio always have and I don't know if I will pass, but You can't expect not to put forth an effort.
I got a B in the class through hard studying. His only good points are he gives quizzes that are extra credit points that add to your exam grade.

I had knowles last semester and he is completely awful. He teaches one thing and puts a something completely different on his Exams.He is also very unhelpful when it comes to outside the classroom help. He told me on more than one occaision to look in the book instead of explaining it to me Avoid knowles at all cost if you value your GPA.
He was not helpful at all and what he teaches in class is not what he tests you on. Avoid taking this class if you can.

The lectures are long but are not as bad as everyone makes them out to be. The guy really does know his stuff on biology, but as a teacher he leaves a lot to be asked for. Not very clear on what will be on the tests, tests are also on like 7 chapters. Lots of information to know. He does offer some extra credit though, not too hard to get a B.

Everyone is giving Dr. Knowles a bad rap, but I think he is a great professor. If you go to class, read the chapters (you could even pass just by skimming the chapters) and study...wow, what a concept!, you can pass this class. He made the class interesting with his tidbits on Costa Rica too.

This guy is a horrible lecturer. He's boring and stretches the pointless material as far as he can. I hated going to this class. He doesn't know how to teach and his tests are badly designed, which is evident by the fact he has to put curves on all his exams. On that note, it's a relatively easy class to get by in.
Simply avoid. Didn't leave from behind his desk once or twice, and read off of his own powerpoint presentations. If you can learn this way, go for it. Tests on information totally unrelated to his outlines. Just don't go there.

I think he is also bipolar because one minute he'll be nice and then the next he'll be freaking out. If you are not interested in biology or if you would like to actually learn something don't take him.
I never liked this subject until I had this teacher. He made it more interesting than in my other Bio classes. People say that he is hard but he helps you in class (when u go) and give lots of extra credit for the tests. He is a nice teacher and a good teacher. Just listen to see when he says that something is important, star it, it's on the test.
This class is pretty easy. The teacher is kinda boring and get off topic some but he gives extra credit almost everyday to go on the exams. He gives outlined lecture notes and teaches straight from them. If you go to class and study the lecture notes and read a lil in the book you will pass without a doubt!!! Not hard at all!

This class was great and he knows what he is talking about. The people who leave bad remarks are the people who don't attend class. Very few people showed up for class but if you do you get extra credit and at the end go to the review session to get more. He grabbed my attention so if you go to class you will get an A like me!
I have to agree, he was very fair, many extra credit oppoutunities, come to class and follow the power points and skim the chapters and you will do fine. Not a strong lecturer but makes up for it in his extra credit opportunities and fair grading.
Mr. Knowles basically sucks. All he gives for grades are 4 tests. You better read the book because he obviously knows what he is talking about....but doesn't explain it AT ALL! Good luck if you have him, you are going to need it.
The lectures are the most boring ones you'll ever attend, however I thought the tests were fair and actually did test you on the information covered in class. You HAVE to go to class though if you want to do well, you need to have all the notes to do well on the tests, so don't skip if you want a good grade!

This professor definitely knows what he's talking about. Tests are fairly difficult, but if you attend class you'll do well. Tests are based entirely off of the notes you take in class, so I recommend attending! Plus-- Once in a while he gives pop quizzes, and for every answer you get right-- you get a point added to your next exam. This class

I went to class every day and took notes and am still failing. To top it all off, this is the second time that I have taken this class. I went to talk to him and he pretty much snubbed me. His lectures are so boring and he is always getting off topic.
Well even though everyone up here hates him, I dont! I sat in the frount of his class and got to know him a little bit and he's a nice funny kinda guy! I liked him. He moves kinda fast because he has a lot of material to cover. And the exams ARE able to pass I made 3 B's and 1 C's. The tests are mainly on the notes. He's not that bad!!!

This teacher is very talkative about his experiences elsewhere but they do relate and can help you remember things. I think is a good teacher and he admits that he is a ecologist and not a biologist. I do recommend showing up for class, he gives lots of extra credit.

Mr. Knowles sucks! His class is extrememly boring, he flies through his lectures, and his tests are hard, not to mention your grade is based on only 4 tests. His tests have nothing to do with his notes. I'm a good student and I've gotten D's and E's on the tests..the average is always in the 60's. DONT TAKE HIM!
This is by far my worst class. He doesn't even know what he's talking about have the time. He types out notes that he skips over and gets mad when you ask him to go back. Yet all his tests are on the notes you didn't get. He is absloutely boring and will put you to sleep especailly at 8 am. DO NOT TAKE HIM!
I don't find him boring as much as unorganized and he does tend to ramble. The fact there are only four tests which compromise your enitre grade is intimidating and the fact that they are HARD!! and his notes are not very effective. Beware-don't take him
He is an awful professor I ended up with a C but trust me you have to work your butt off for good grades in his class. See him during his office hours, take your laptop to class to type up lecture notes and pray!

Be prepared to take a lot of notes. He doesn't post them on Blackboard. The tests are fairly easy. He posts a list of key words online and gives pop quizzes for extra credit. You'll do well in the class if you just go and pay attention. I didn't think that I was going to do well in the beginning, but I ended up making an A in the class.

Dr. Knowles is a very interesting guy. He seems like he would be strict but he's really not. The tests are really easy, but if you can manage to get a MWF class, it' would probably benefit you more because it's really hard to sit still for almost 2 hours. Still a great teacher. Definitely recommended.
