Coolest english teacher ever
Cool guy but the class is pointless
groovy professor and class
Amazing English prof. Helped me with some major issues. You have to be ready for anything in this class. Have fun! It never lasts as long as it should.
really cool guy...not that great of a teacher.
Very cool guy, but the worst professor I've ever had. There is no class content. He is very unclear and cannot stay on task during class. You will not learn a single thing in Kossy's classes.
Really nice guy
The coolest english teacher i've ever had. Due dates are very flexible. Great class.
first week i was scared but realized how lucky i was. due dates are extremely flexible. funny, cool guy. just show up to class and stay on top of the work and you'll be ok. i'd take him again.
Prof. Kossy is an okay teach, but he has a low attention span and the littlest things irritate him. Overall, the class is straight and he dishes out a few papers every now and then, but their quite easy and due dates are pretty flexible.
This guy sounds like Dustin Hoffman in Rainman. You don't learn much, but he is an easy mark. The class was a waste of time. He should be teaching on a farm in Bolivia.
Kossy comes off as a really cool laid back guy, but he really sticks it to you on grading your papers. The class is easy, kinda boring with a few jokes and funny moments tossed in. I wouldn't take his class again. His bite is much too hard for his bark.

cool guy, bad teacher. I did not learn a thing from this guy. His grading is hard but kinda-of-sort of fair; you have to be on top of things. Do not expect to get much out of the class
i thoguht he tried too hard to be cool. i also did not like the way he graded. i wouldnt recommend him.
Prof. Kossy has a low attention span. Also, one minute he's mister nice guy then the next minute he wants to act like he's a real teacher. He is irritated by the littlest things. He is also favorable.

quizzes are really easy, due dates are flexible, but the papers are graded tough. he's very short in explaining what to do specifically.
Dave (Can't use his last name because he will get pissed) is a very difficult teacher. Although he is very flexible on turning in essays and his quizzes are really easy, his grading is fatal. Don't expect to receive higher than a C! Good luck!

Class is pointless and he takes it personal if you don't show up(lowers your grade). forget getting a decent grade on your papers. i will make sure i don't end up in his class again.
Dave is a cool guy, an English teacher who actually seems to have a life. He's fun in class, and his assignments leave room for creativity. Even though he's laid back, he still grades hard; so you can't get away with crap work. I plan to take his class again for 104.
Papers were bombarded by other papers, but due dates were printed in stone. As long as you have a rough draft in on time, you can take your time with the final. He talks fast and drifts, but is a funny man
DAVE as he makes u call him is one of the funniest teachers you'll ever have here...but its kinda like a disguise, he makes u like him then bombards u with papers. Looks and sounds EXACTLY like Al Bundy...take him just for that reason
He is lazy and tries to hard to be likeable. When you turn your papers in on time he takes forever getting them back to you.
Dave is really nice guy! he makes class fun and interesting! This class is laid back, but as he warns, his papers are a challenge. Expect to put in effort but if you've ever written a paper its not that big of a deal. He wants his students to be creative and hes a really funny guy!
This class is absolutley ridiculous. Kossy down talks the students. He puts students on blast in fron t of the entire class and most of the time he doesn't even have his stuff together. I spent the whole hour and a half sitting in that class wondering why am i here. Do not take this course.
dont take this class if you're expecting an easy A...the papers are definitely a challenge, but i feel that i have become a better writer because of Dave's critical grading (and i actually got an A!!!) He also makes the class interesting cuz hes kinda wacky :)
Comp. He's an authentically intelligent man who is passionate about his subject matter and as laid back as they come. Definitely requires that you work and progess, but that's what one should expect and treasure.Great prof, wonderful man. He's even into spoken word!(Applause inserted here.)
this guy tries to come off as cool by saying f*** & s***, but he's not, he grades really harder, and doesn't explain what he wants out of his assignments, u have to work your a** off to get a decent grade, 1 person got an A on our first two assignments
Dave was the coolest teacher I have had at DePaul. He is awesome! Best personality ever, not just for a prof. but in general. I would take him for every class if I could. All I could think when he would come late to class is that he came from somewhere cool
Dave can be vaguely funny&likeable which is why most have a good time in his class. BUT he is a horrible teacher. Rambles&goes off on tangent upon tangent, tending never to finish any point. Extremely vague about assignments. Acts like an easy-going grader, then proceeds to rip papers apart. I learned nothing&was very frustrated.

This class is so misleading! You do not have any clue what your grade will be until after the final. You do exactly what he says on the final cases. The final exam is so vague, so good luck with that. I do not reccomend him AT ALL!
This professor is horrible. He grades drafts and then tells you what he expects on the drafts after they've been turned in. He tries to be cool in an effort to cover up his lack of teaching ability. He taught none of the material, yet expected us to know everthing. DO NOT TAKE HIME!!!!!!!!!
My whole life I have hated English class. If I had to take another one I probaly would have quit school all together. David Kossy made it fun, interesting, and is very open to different writting styles. Although I still hate writting memos and letters- i have a little cheat sheet by my desk at work from that class
I have to agree that the teacher is a bit confusing. My first impression of his teaching style was not a good one, but actually I learned a lot in this class. I work full time and this class was very helpful in helping me write business letters. I would recommend taking this teacher.
terrible teacher. pretends to be a nice, easy goin guy but screws you over on grades. he grades on his opinions, which change every 5 seconds. you could have him look your paper over before you hand it in, he'll tell you it's good, then you'll get a C-.
This english teacher attempted to teach something but failed miserbly. The course had no structure, the papers were ridiculous, and the refrences to songs that we never heard of are bad. I defintely wouldn't recommend this teacher, especially since he has no idea what he is grading on...and expect you to know English like he does, which is not much.
Kossy Rocks. Brilliant song writer. Creative mind. Insightful. And a free-spirit at that.
Eh this man is very hard to understand. The class is hard to pay attention in and the assignments are outrageously vauge.
I took this class over summer, I thought he was an ex-hippy/burnout. Turns out he is. He teaches the class in reverse. Makes you do HW and then corrects it and then teaches you the lesson. Wierd teaching method. Cares for students.. but you gota like the same kinda music to relate...OVERALL cool guy but dont expect to get an A..
Okay I wasn't happy that as a transfer student I still had to take Eng 104, and Kossy didn't make me like it any better. He is funny and laid back (real laid-back, he's got quite a potty mouth) :) We talked about politics the whole time, but he is really cool about turning papers in whenever you feel like. His "syllabus" is comical in its lack o
Kossy is an intelligent man, but I couldnt tell if he didnt want to teach anything, or he just doesnt' know how. He's a terrible combination of being both unclear about assignments and a tough grader. Spends a lot of time going off on tangents that make little sense and his jokes end with the class staring at him awkwardly. Avoid...
He incorporates alot of interesting political stuff into the class...he is very laid back and often we are out of class early...the work load however was alot...and he has a very particular style he wants...so make sure to ask for specific help on what he wants u to do differently...funny guy who refers to bands and events i had never heard of
No Comments
He comes off as so laid back and just wants students to think everything is cool. No due dates for assignments, occasional quizes, couple papers...but he totally focuses on the final research paper and is of absolutely no help whatsoever. If you ask him to look over a paper he will give you good feedback and then when you go to turn it's a C-.
Horrible teacher. Class time always wasted. Grades you on how you relate to him and his love for the 60s. I can't believe he was hired at a private college like DePaul University! He's not even fit to teach grade school English!
Everybody thinks that this guy is out there wit his stories, but in some strange way, it all comes back to what we're talking about in class. Biggest thing is term paper, but he really makes it easy for you. A lot of stupid quizzes and papers that he gives out A's and B's for. Show some basic interest in the class and Dave and you'll do a B
I don't appreciate being interrupted by a professors. All he wants to do is talk about all the hippie music he likes. He doesn't listen to his students and doesn't give constructive notes on the papers you do. Absolutely no structure to the class.
Great guy, not the greatest professor. He really doesn't spend any time teaching the class how to do the work. Instead, he unloads a lot of work to be done without explaining what he expects from us. His assignments are demanding and his grading is strict. But, I must admit that his laid back/ hippie personality maked the class less horrible.
He cannot teach. All he does is hand out vague assignments and put poor grades on them. You cannot read his feedback on papers and when you can it doesn't make any sense. If you don't agree with his views or love of the 60's he won't give you a good grade. I learned more about what kind of cigarettes he likes than about English. Avoid.
He is not ahard grader. He is very laid back and understanding. You write alot of papers but they are interesting. You also take alot of quizes but if you have read the material than you will ace them.
Fun class to be in and a helpful teacher
For those that gave this professor a poor rating, you probably didn't do well on one paper and then you just gave up. This professor just wants to make his students better writers. If you show that you care and that you want to learn, the rest will follow.
Its not the fact that he's a hard grader, its the fact that he goes off on unnecessary tangents and doesn't stop for 20 min. His assignments are vague and sometimes useless. He is full of himself and thinks he's funny. And his references to the 60's are overused. Take him if you can bare tangents and can write fairly well.
I don't see how Dave has such a low rating. Sure he likes to talk, but he is great at teaching the subject. Take him. :)
I personally didn't like the guy all he talked about was his hippy stuff and wasn't too helpful when it came to writing papers. For the final paper all he did was tell me was how bad it was and offered no advice. Regardless, I still got a B in the class. He's not a tough grader and he can be a pretty funny guy at times
DO NOT TAKE HIM. we spend more time talking about obama and how great kossy thinks he is that we do talking about writing. i have learned absoultely nothing in his class and yet he grades papers tough. he can barely go an hour without wanting a cigarette and his rants that he goes off on about mccain and palin are offensive and unprofessional
Alright looks like he gets a bad rap but this is the kinda teacher i love. went off on tangents about the election and about his hippy days. But with that you learn some about life experiences. dont know if i learned anything from this class haha but still love dave. want to take him for 104. 6 papers= 3short 3long and put together portfolio at end
Dave was such a fun guy, he's old and swears every other sentence. He's really easy going and lets you out of class early most days. He rambles for most of the class period about nothing relating to the course matter which gets annoying but if you do the reading and take time on your writing, you should be fine :)
Ok i took Kossy 3 times for different classes. look,he is easy if you know the trick.you have to have all stuff turned in by the last day.so the day he "says" its due bring it to class and say hey can you look this over.GO back and make the changes and poof easy A. i did it with 3 classes he taught. simple!
Professor Kossy, is extremely personable, although his WRD 104 class was kind of difficult, but I'm a procrastinator and put off doing the ten page paper. He is easy going with due dates, but that's probably he gets confused himself. He is passionate about his work and is an adamant liberal, so watch out! He loves students with passion.
The previous ratings are obviously by freshman who take themselves too seriously. I took him during my last quarter. I may have thought the same way 4 years ago, but I doubt it. This guy is laid back and funny as hell. He is very helpful, will proofread everything before you turn it in. Go have a cig with him sometime, you'll enjoy the experience.
HAHA, dave. look, he's a liberal who LOVES to smoke - that's jus how it is! he's a good guy and knows his stuff about writing. If you write well enuf, do the readings and come to class you'll pass, EASY. my final paper was on smoking BANS and i got an A so don't hate on him bcuz he IS fair. jus smoked a lil too much pot back in the day...
He gets a lot of crap, but he's a good professor. Yes, he's completely liberal, but he'll listen to you regardless of political beliefs. He's a fair grader, and lets you re-do a paper if you really miss the ball. Lax about tardiness and shows good movies. Also, the reading is pretty interesting.
I loved professor Kossy! I recommend taking him. He is funny, intelligen, and alwayshas something different to offer the class. he is flexible with due dates on papers, and is open to suggestions from students. He is very helpful when writing papers and incredibly knowledgeable about the english language. The readings are all interesting. Take him!
He was an absolute wonder! her always made class worth attending. I took the class during the presidential election and the debates where always fun! At times it was just a bit difficult to understand what it was that he wanted from the papers. the great thing was that he always was willing to help out! Take his class!
GREAT PROFESSOR! TAKE HIM. DO THE READING, EASY QUIZZES, MEMOS AREN'T ALL THAT BAD. TAKE HIM!
WORST TEACHER EVER. THIS GUY JUST RANTS HIS OPINIONS ABOUT GRAMMAR. HE WILL GIVE YOU A BAD GRADE FOR USING TOO MANY COMMAS. THIS GUY IS A JOKE. DON'T TAKE HIM
Great prof. Sure, he's liberal, but he's open to other opinions. He'll help you out if you need it, and actually wants you to get a good grade. Talk to him! He's a nice guy.
If you enjoy an annoyingly liberal hippie dude trying to teach a writing class and do not need any guidance in the slightest, then go for it! however, he is very forgetful and has a very unclear way of grading, so if you would enjoy actually getting something out of this class, i get out.
He's a nice guy, a little liberal, but he can always start up an interesting debate/ conversation. He swears a lot but he's a nice guy. The most annoying thing is he marks your paper low without telling you why. If you're into politics, choose this guy in a heartbeat.
HORRIBLE X100. NEVER TAKE HIM. he is absolutely the worst ever. all over the place, pointless papers, he grades SOOO hard, and he never makes any sense. i truly do not know why someone would give him a decent review. he is a nice guy but should definitely NOT be teaching.
Yes, he is incredibly political/liberal, but he is really interested in listening to the opinions of individuals. His essays aren't all that difficult, and he is clear cut on what he wants. He truly wants you to see you improve as a writer and keeps the class discussions really interesting and engaging. Definitely recommended!
Kossy is an awesome professor. He is interesting and different in a good way. He is respectful of different opinions and makes class fun with videos and interesting articles. There are a lot of chances to get the grade you want. The general class feel is very laid back.
He's a really good professor. Take him!
He slurs his words and this gives off the impression that he is high. He's very liberal. You have no clue what grade you're getting. Honestly, it seems like your grade depends on his mood. Pick another teacher if you can.
At the beginning, I loathed going to Kossy's class because I wasn't used to a professor just yapping and digressing. Once you get used to it it becomes easy. Just make sure you follow the guidelines of papers and attend class. Overall he's a good guy with a good sense of humor but I think his professional presentation could be better.
He makes class really fun and he's good at what he does.
Very good instructor. He's all over the place some times but has good intentions. He is very accessible via phone and email for feedback on assignments. If you want to learn to write you want to take someone who will challenge you and give you the tools to get better.
Ridiculous, I dropped his class because he asked about details and required us delving into scopes of matter that have nothing to do with writing in the professional setting. David will call on you at random and require that you answer specific questions about what he perceives to be important. - this was all written professionally btw.
The class is relevant. It presents useful concepts that can be helpful in everyday corporate settings. The work load was somewhat over the top. I had to put more time into this class then i would have liked. But the guy is hilarious and makes going to class a blast. (very helpful)
DO NOT TAKE HIM FOR WRD 202! He is severely disorganized and I never have any idea what he's talking about or what's even due. He's a nice guy and makes class fun, but there's a gross amount of work for only a 2 credit class. Avoid at all costs.
You either love him or you HATE him. He's very sarcastic and tends to ramble off topic every class. He can come off as rude if you're sensitive and he has no problem calling students out on anything. He is also hilarious if you can't his humor. I took him again for 104 and still like him as a teacher. (He's not the most organized but he's trying)
Dave is great because he's lenient..... but he's also TOO lenient. He never has a lesson plan, at least not one that he follows, and he never gives you enough time to prepare for an assignment or enough specifics as to what he's looking for. Nice guy? Totally. Good teacher? Not for me.
Dave is pretty cool, but he's a total airhead. He jumps from student to student, never really letting anyone finish their point, but I'm pretty sure he's got ADD up the wazoo. He's nice and will help you with your papers. Deadlines aren't super strict. He mostly just wants you to do a good job. He'll take any chance he gets to talk about his music.
Absolutely unfit to be a teacher, will grade your quizzes with one glance without actually reading content. Very inappropriate, judgmental, and unclear. I felt like I lost brain cells after each lecture. This class is required for business school, avoid him at all costs if you do not want to lose your sanity. I thought DePaul was better than this.
He is not organized, the whole class was confused on what the assignment was about and he did not help in any way. I had to turn in a portfolio with papers that he did not prepare us for, and he is even rude about it. When I asked what should I improve he just basically told me my paper was bad, and did not even try to help me improve it.
Take him--you'll work hard, learn a lot and have fun
He is always willing to help and make it work out for students. He sent out reminders of upcoming due assignments every week on d2l. Everything is very clear on his syllabus as well. In addition, he let students turn in their drafts, then gave feedback, then gave students time to revise their papers before turning them in.
I took Prof. Kossy for both WRD 103 and 104 and he is one of the best writing professors out there. You will learn a lot, he is helpful, and very concise. Be prepared for random rants and singing! Try not to miss too many classes as it will have an effect on your grade, as well as how lenient he is with your final grade at the end of the quarter.
He is a very disorganized teacher who often goes off track to talk music, politics, or other current events. Overall, he is a good teacher who makes the assignments interesting. Hard quizzes though.
I have mixed feelings about Dave. He jumps around a lot, goes on rants, can be confusing, plays favorites, and will shoot down ideas. That being said he has good intentions and you can easily get a good grade by putting forth the effort. Besides what I listed being in class is chill, although assignments/quizzes might be tough.
Taking Dave's class made me lose the enjoyment I had in writing. He's super political and the only topic you write about in class is politics. He's never focused on one thing and always goes on tangents. You always have to write his way which is bland and boring. No freedom when writing whatsoever. The quizzes are repetitive.
Good person, but assigned a lot of papers. He was a tough grader although he does allow revisions. When giving feedback he does a terrible job. Overall he makes an easy class harder than it should be.
He is a cool teacher. His assignments are not very difficult, he is lenient with deadlines, and accessible. however when grading, he can be a little tough and looks for specific things. in class he jumps around a lot, so it is hard to follow him. also his instructions on assignments are unclear. if you're in his class ask questions
he assigns lots of papers, very unclear about what he is expecting. book is necessary if u want a good grade, rent from amazon. he is accessible and willing to help. his lecture is bearable because he never stays on topic. funny dude. tough grader. attendance is mandatory. make sure you stay on track or you will get overwhelmed
He seems like a good guy. His class however, is disorganized and confusing. He has various files that aren't well sorted on D2L and assigns a lot of assignments. He has very specific expectations on the assignments, so it can be hard at first to be on the same page as him. However, he gives you the opportunity to get feedback and redo assignments.
Professor Kossy is a great person who truly wants his students to succeed. However, the homework and the instructions for some of the cases were very confusing. I had a hard time comprehending some of the feedback that he gave. If you want to do well in this class, you must show up to every class and he is going to require everyone to participate.
This class is a nightmare. For a class on "Professional Business Writing" it is confusing. The professor's writing is awful and disorganized,I do not even know what the assignments are asking me to do. Do yourself a favor and take another professor, this one should not be teaching anything, much less a class on structured and professional writing.
This class is heavy on work but Professor Kossy makes the class very entertaining. You will learn a lot but have to put in the effort.
I started his online WRD 104 class and had to drop it after the first week; his D2L was laid out so terribly that I never knew what the assignment was or what was expected. I spent 30 minutes searching one night to figure out what was due for the next class, and it was incredibly unclear. Be prepared to email him every week about the assignments.
Kossy is nice but beware. Don't take him if you're not self-motivated, he barely enforces deadlines. He does genuinely care about his students and grades quickly/answers emails quickly but he's very disorganized. If you're a good student, you'll pass no problem but only if you're organized and focused. Not much structure and horrible at technology.
I took WRD 104. Professor Kossy usually refers to himself as Dave. He goes on a ton of tangents about the 60s and jumps around a lot when he's talking, but is really nice. He doesn't do late penalties and is defiantly there to help. His D2L is confusing. You can sometimes tune him out during class to work on stuff. He really cares about you.
Professor Kossy is a nice person but his class was all over the place. His D2L was hard to navigate. WRD 103 had 6 essays with flexible due dates but he would check that you have at least a draft in class. He went on tangents a lot which were sometimes interesting but other times I would zone out. He's a tough grader but gives you time to revise.
I hate this professor and the class. He talks for the WHOLE time. soo unorganized, he just throws work at you and his instructions aren't even clear. Although he doesn't care about deadlines you fall behind and all of a sudden he is saying that you are going to fail. Attandance is mandatory if you miss 2 classes your "failing"
Professor Kossy is extremely unprofessional and unorganized. He goes on these endless tangents and is kind of all over the place. He'll start talking about one thing and then think about something else and immediately changes the subject. His assigned work was pretty easy but it was just very hard to find out when everything was due
If you are able to take any other professor, do it. This professor is probably the hardest, most difficult professor I have ever had. Gives us so much busy work that is completely unnecessary to the actual work he wants us to do. With the busy work on top of it, it's hard to turn assignments in on time, which he doesnt accept late work either btw
When you have to take WRD 104, do not take from this professor. I have never taken a worse class in my life. He is so incredibly unhelpful and assigns the most amount of busy work ever, nothing ever helping us to write the 10-page paper due at the end of the quarter. Everyone is always lost and behind and no one has any idea what is going on,
Dave is fine. He rambles, and is unorganized. If you want a funny prof that's really flexible with deadlines, he's your guy. If you want to know 100% what you have to do by next class, he is not your guy. He does give good, detailed feedback though. You learn to sit back and either be entertained or just work on other stuff in class.
The instructions are unclear, and it's very difficult to figure out what he wants from you in terms of writing. INCREDIBLY HARD GRADER and doesn't give clear feedback either. Pretty disrespectful as well when critiquing your writing, doesn't seem like he actually wants to help you improve.
I learned nothing from him; I had to teach myself. The pacing was okay, but his textbook homework didn't connect with the papers. He'd get super close to making comments that would concern any DEI office. He wasted class time on tangents (halfway through attendance once he wanted to share rock music) and argued with students he disagreed with.
Honestly, he's not a great professor. He assigns a lot of work, isn't very clear on due dates, goes on lots of unrelated rants without being direct on instructions, and is a picky grader. That being said, he is a really good person. He's loose with due dates if you talk to him about it and he's very kind and understanding. Bad class, good guy.
I feel bad writing this review as David is a very nice man. Yet, he LOVES to talk. This is a class that you kind of just learn to toon him out. He isn't the hardest grader but not the easiest either. As someone who isn't a bad writer this class wasn't the worst. However, if writing isn't your strong suite, pick another class. Prepare to be bored.
Professor Kossy is an eccentric instructor who loves to ramble, but he's also understanding if you communicate with him. The workload can be heavy, so using resources like unstuck study for study prep is really helpful. Overall, it's a challenging course, but you can get through it.
