Very big on details!! Papers are hard, quizzes are a piece of cake though! Show up, take really good notes, and READ THE BOOKS and you'll do fine.
He is VERY big on details in his papers and exams (which are essay). Gives pop quizzes which are easy as long as you study your notes and take good notes. Very interesting to listen to. Recommend Dr. La Vere.
He was an amazing teacher. He does love to give pop quizzes, and attendence isn't madatory but i'd be there. His papers can be hard, loves detail, wants papers to be precise. Overall, he is a great teacher, and as long as your in class fine. He makes the class interesting!!!

I did not like this class because even though the quizzes were easy as long as you listened in class, his papers were HARD! He wants very specific details and if you don't give them you are automatically wrong. He made me feel worse about my grade and I thought he was just mean.
I hate History and have Droped many HST classes to fine a good teacher. This is the guy you want if you hate history. Just GO to class and take notes and you will do fine. Easy tests and pop quize. For the papers be sure to tell him exactly what he asks for. OVER all a great teacher and easy class for a HST.
Dr. LaVere may be a good professor, but I didn't think so. His tests are all essay and he's a real hardass on grading. If you get on his list, you're pretty much screwed. The papers are horrible and he wants way too many details. I wouldn't recommend him.
Pretty interesting guy. Papers are must be detailed b/c only 2 pgs with 14 font. If you listen in class tests are simple; easy grader. movie reviews for extra credit
Terrible class. You have to summarize 300 pages into 2 pages. If you dont put exactly what HE WANTS then you get a C or lower. His exams are about 6-8 pages of essays. Way to hard of a grader for a simple basic studies.
Really cool guy actually. Was always willing to help out if he could. Made some girls cry, but not most students. Is very unclear about what he specifically wants in a paper and his grading is very strange. Has his own ideas about what goes into a paper and not following those ideas perfectly will result in a bad grade. Hilarious man!
He lectured a lot but was interesting. I have always done very bad in History courses but this one was not hard. Take notes on lectures and you have a midterm and final some pop quizes, and 3 books to read and papers to write on them.
Definitely need to go to every class. You will miss out on a lot if you don't and you must pay attention. Way too hard for basic studies.
Hilarious Guy!. He is a unique person. He is an exmarine/ vietnam vet/ from new orleans/ got married in vegas and oh yeah somehow ended up with a PhD. He is a hard grader but not impossible to get an A. I enjoyed his class but you HAVE to attend to do well on the essays.
This man is horrible! He bases your grade off of what he would write... wants ridiculous amount of detail and wants you to write about things that doesn't even deal with the question that he is asking. He ultimately sets his students up to fail. I don't think he wants anyone to do well in his class. I would definitely recommend taking someone else.
I took the online portion which was very well organized and structured. There was a good amount of work but was manageable for a summer session. He is a very strict grader and his comments seemed very generalized and sometimes unhelpful. He also would call you out for very random specific things. I would still take the class but it was difficult.
Dr. La Vere is a great teacher. I took his seminar on the Battle of the Little Big Horn. He is a strict teacher and grader, but this will help you stay on top of your work in the class. Don't procrastinate, do your reading, ask as many questions as needed, and you'll do just fine. I would take his class again.
I took this class online. I was not interested in history to begin with, and this class did not do much to change that. I thought he graded strictly and had a lot of work due for a summer class and a basic studies class. He is obviously a good teacher and knows his stuff, though.
This professor nitpicks at every little thing for discussion papers. You will never get a 100. He has a lot of helpful tools but I feel like he made this class a lot harder than it should've been. I would work on my papers for days and I would get only an 80. I wish I waited to take it during the actual school year. DON'T TAKE ONLINE.
Worst professor ever. He is the toughest grader for assignment that is due. He bases your grade solely on what he would write about.
Dr. Lavere is not the clearest or the easiest professor but he does know his subject inside and out. His class consists mainly of lectures with some outside reading. If you go to class, ask questions, read the texts he assigns, and turn in your assignments on time you will be fine. If you want to learn about North Carolina Indians, take this class.
His class was very organized and easy to follow. I found that as long as you read the book and watch his lectures you will do fine. I took his online class over the summer and I really learned a lot from it. I wish that I was able to take this professor in class.
Dr. La Vere - yeah, I probably wouldn't take him again. His mechanism of grading is very strange. He looks for specific details that are no where to be found in the readings; takes off points not based on your essay content, but on what he would've written about; and does not clarify what he is looking for when asked how to improve.
(Weekly) read a chapter, listen to his lecture. Then a quiz , a discussion boards and an additional assignment on the reading. The assignments were already posted so you could just do them before the actual due date. There are 2 books Essays a Midterm and Final. I only listen to his lectures and skimmed the book during the quiz and passed
I loved this class. It is a lot of work. There's a unit every week. The units consist of 3 video lectures (usually no more than 20 minutes), a 10 question multiple choice quiz, and a 300 word discussion. You need to stay on top of everything or it will be very difficult. On the discussions, he gives great feedback.
Online class wasn't bad. For the quizzes, open his lesson tab with all his commentary and then search for buzzwords within for easy answers. His discussions are rough, use the videos. He's very strict and looking for incredibly specific information. No tests but until you figure out how the class works it's rough. Three book papers that aren't bad.
I'm a senior with a 4.0 GPA in History classes and found Lavere's 105 to be harder than seminar courses I've taken! Be prepared to write an essay a week. Even though he calls them "discussion questions" you might as well be prepared to write a 3 page essay which he will still nitpick you to death on. A suggestion: avoid at all costs.
Dr. La Vere is very smart and obviously knows his stuff. However, he is confusing in what he expects from students. For each paper that was turned in I wrote to the best of my ability trying my hardest to put exactly what I read to be what he wanted and not once did I get it correct. My frustration was due to his inability to explai what he expects
I enjoyed Dr La Vere's class somewhat, by the end of the Semester his teaching style gets boring and repetitive. Assigns a good amount of work including; six pop quizzes, 3 book reports, a research paper, a mid-term and i final exam.
I never even used the Atlas of the North American Indian for American Indian History. Wasted money. Get every other book though, your going to need those.
Professor La Vere is BY FAR the worst professor I have had in my whole college career. He is ridiculous when it comes to grading, he says one thing in the requirements and then when grading he says something entirely different! I am being forced to withdraw from this class, because he actually teaches as though he wants you to fail. He is the worst
Dr. La Vere is my least favorite professor that I've had at UNCW. He is condescending and rude in his feedback on discussions. He is unclear on expectations and grades as if we are in an upper level class. He seems to want his students to fail a 105 course (mostly taken by non history majors). I wish I had withdrawn from La Vere's class.
I am taking this course to complete my Gen Ed. It is a 100 level course and it is 10 times more difficult than my 300 level course. He is way too demanding for a basic class and this course will probably end up bringing my GPA down. La Vere needs to find another hobby because his outrageous demands for his students. Would not recommend him!!!!
Dr. La Vere is the first professor I have taken at UNCW that does not seem to encourage student's success. I am a graduating senior in the Honors College and this was the most difficult and work intensive course I have taken in my college career.
Stay away!!!! 3 book reports, 5 essays, pop quizzes, and tests. Super tough grader with ridiculously high expectations. WAY too hard for a 100 level class.
La vere is hilarious, he will call out students though. This is why he has so many bad ratings, but its all in good humor( and is funny, even when its me ). The books he assigns are good, and the papers are graded fairly. Not an easy A, but if you try you will get at least a B, if your smart you can get an A. Also he is an expert in his field.
Loved everything about his class. He inspired me to work harder and it was the only class I took that I actually payed attention the whole time and didn't play any games on my phone or computer. 10/10 would recommend.
This 100-level class had more work involved than any other class I've ever taken (including graduate school) and he was overly demanding in his expectations. He belittles students and seems to get off on power tripping. Warning: If he asks your opinion, he wants his opinion. No matter how well backed up by facts your opinion is. NEVER AGAIN.
I am a straight A student and it is obvious this teacher does not want his students to be successful. His grading is absurd an he takes points off for random things that were not specified in the rubric. I took this class online and put hours and hours on end of work into it for a crazy teacher to be unfair in his grading and assignments.
Don't plan on having a job or social life outside of this class--so much work. His grading is ridiculous. You must include every bit of information possible--especially info not asked about in the question--to get a *decent* grade. The only pro is 1 extra credit opportunity. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
Guidelines are unclear, and you practically have to read his mind to know what his expectations are. Says that assignments have a 300 word minimum, but then emails the day the assignment is due and says if you only write 300 words, you'll get an automatic C. Rude, unclear, and expects way too much for a 100 level course. I'm probably withdrawing.
I heavily regret signing up for this class. He grades so harshly and my GPA is going to suffer after this class. I have written papers that I have had multiple people review along with going to the writing lab and I still can not seem to get an A. He knows what hes talking about but this class isnt worth it unless youre looking to fail.
Chem student, harder than Biochemistry. Hard grader with a lot of work. Tried to work with him multiple times, but still couldn't give what he wanted. Worst teacher at UNCW I've had. Gives you a B and can't tell you what to fix. I showed him where i directly answered his questions, but still wasn't good enough. Changed nothing during COVID. AVOID!
The class material itself isn't difficult to understand or learn, however his expectations and grading are extremely hard for a 105 level class. His directions were contradictory and never clear, and the specifics of the papers were always ambiguous. Extra credit is offered at the end of the semester which I definitely recommend doing.
Absolutely worst professor I have ever had the displeasure of taking. His book he assigns (that he wrote) is so poorly written my eight year old sister could mash a keyboard and create more coherent sentences. His expectations are vague and he takes points off even when you do everything right. Belittled students and super hard to get a good grade
Took this class and quickly came to realize how hard it was! This was the first time I ever made a C in college and it was also the hardest class I ever took. You had to read/write at least 2 papers every week on books that the professor himself wrote so either way whatever you said was always wrong. He is a tough grader and didn't care if u passed
Gives tricky quizzes, if you do not put exactly what he is thinking in your discussion post then it is wrong and you will receive a low grade, also can be rude when giving feedback. I would not recommend. You have to write a paper on a book he wrote, so if you miss one thing then it is all wrong.
He was a great professor. His feedback was always extremely helpful. It was a writing heavy class. He made the material interesting and I loved his lectures. He really tried to get students involved and teach them valuable lessons about writing and school.
While his lectures are interesting, Professor La Vere is a very hard grader. Even when he tells you that you've done well, you still seem to lose a couple points for reasons unknown. There are 3 book exams (one of them being on a book he wrote). If you don't have exactly what he is looking for in your answers, good luck. Tons of writing, look out.
I took this professor for a summer course. The work load wasnt even that bad, but this professor was horrible. He was unnecessarily strict with grading. He was inconsiderate when it came to outside issues. He lowered my grade because of a problem with Canvas. He didnt give instructions on the final, only on the 2nd day (2 day final). Rude in gen.
Dr La Vere is the best storyteller I have ever witnessed. He makes history so interesting and encapsulate students with his lectures, he knows so much about what he teaches it's almost like he was alive way back when. He is a tough grader and does require students to read 3 boring books, but he is an amazing teacher and the workload is manageable.
His grading made no sense, and he gives extremely negative feedback with no real solution. If you don't list extreme specific things (some aren't even talked about) be ready to get no more than a 50 on all assignments. Will NEVER take him again. Don't take any classes by him. I have much more to say, but can't because of the character limit.
Does not provide feedback, rather a bulleted list of things you should include. Is a very harsh grader and expects you to answer how he wants it answered. I would not take this class again- do not recommend, even if you NEED the credit
I wanted to give this prof a chance even after reading his reviews , but I just couldnt. He is one of the hardest graders I have ever had in college, especially for a 100 level class which makes it so much worse. The material isnt hard at all, but his expectations and grading is often rude and makes no sense. From a straight A student, dont take
Dr. La Vere is extremely difficult and doesn't give enough feedback on grades. Not very nice or approachable, wouldn't recommend to any student, History major or not.
Professor La Vere is a good teacher when it comes to his lectures he tries to engage the class and make things interesting. But on the other hand he is way too tough of a grader for absolutely no reason. He will take off points for the most specific things even though it wasn't covered that much into detail in his lectures. I would stay away.
your GPA wont survive this class. trust me. dont do it.
Spent hours on a paper just to "not explain enough". Then in my next paper, I explained "too much". He wrote a book and makes it a required textbook for this class, money hungry. He sends about 15 emails on canvas and outlook every week. I asked him for help because I was confused on my papers and he told me to basically drop the class.
You can tell he knows his stuff and is probably a good high level history professor. But, for a 100 level class that most people take to fill a requirement, he grades wayyy too hard. Theres a lot of assignments, but honestly once you get the hang of them they shouldn't take more than an hour a week. Overall, I can't recommend
If you can avoid taking this prof DO IT! For a 100 level class he expects way too much. He grades the weekly discussions very harshly and wants you to have included very specific details he didn't say to put in in the assignment details. He sends numerous lengthy emails every week and is not the most friendly. Worst class I have ever taken at UNCW.
He can be very blunt when grading things, which can be taken as rude and unfriendly. I am usually an A student, and have put the same amount of effort into this class as I have every other class, but somehow have ended up with a grade that does not reflect the usual. Hard grader, would not recommend.
If you have fine time management skills and are able to read/follow instructions you'll be fine. He gives 1 300 word essay a week with clear prompts, answer each question in detail w/evidence, you'll get a good grade. I spend maybe an hour a week on this class and am doing fine. He's a picky grader, but I've taken much harder classes than this one.
Dr. La Vere is overall a very angry old man who clearly has some hatred in the world. He is seemingly nice at first but online he is insanely rude and is very critical of your work. Lots of essays and unless you write EXACTLY what he thinks you will not get a good grade. There are pop quizzes with no makeups.
The class itself is not hard material & he does a good job teaching it. He's passionate about the topics & seems cool, but when it comes to grading papers, he is WAY TOO STRICT. There's 3 book essays, 5 lecture essays & 5 pop quizzes. If you don't write exactly what he wants, you will get a bad grade. Class is just him talking while you take notes.
He is an amazing lecturer. He tells history like its a story, so your captivated the entire time. He does grade tough and is a little picky, but as long as you actually try and understand the materials you can pass with at minimum a B. He can seem a little outlandish and rude at times, but he means well, and is actually a pretty decent professor.
Is very critical both online when grading papers as well as if you choose to speak up in class, or get called on. Most of what you will say is wrong unless it is worded exactly how he wants it to be. I have gotten points off on perfectly written papers due him never giving a rubric/instruction. If taking history to get a credit, find someone else.
This class took me more time every week than my major 400 level classes. He is an insanely strict grader. Wants you to write exactly what he is looking for, and does not have an open mind. His feedback is even rude at times and insulting. If you are looking to take this HST 105 class for credit do not. Find another teacher.
Do not take this professor. Way too harsh of a grader. I have taken multiple 300/400 level classes, and this takes the cake for being too difficult. He tells you in his notes that you haven't written enough, when you're just going off of his lectures and notes. He's rude in his responses and pulls his criticisms out of nowhere.
No rubrics. You will write 10 essays in the class, 3 of them book reports. There are 6 pop quizzes (he tells you). You may think you're a good writer, but he will humble you. If you do not write word for word what he wants (which there is no way of knowing) good luck. Grading is subjective and feedback is mean, not helpful. AVOID at all cost!!!
terrible profesa strict grades, on some boring topics. Weird lectures, very loud
Terrible professor. He expects students to know what he wants us to write on the weekly essays but provides students with very vague instructions. He grades the essays more meticulously than any of my English professors have ever graded a paper. He's also very unresponsive and will not email you back
While La Vere was an interesting lecturer and a good storyteller, the class itself was extremely difficult, with impossible standards. Papers were never graded above a B, and his comments made many unfair assumptions. Papers were graded with impossible standards and extra questions that weren't in the prompt.
While he is very good about his lectures and storytelling, he is an awful professor. He makes you feel very stupid and will tell you that you explained to much or too little. He will tell you that he is a tough grader when you email asking for help or tell you to figure it out. If one thing sounds wrong, he assumes its AI. avoid him.
Dropped this class within a week- DO NOT TAKE. Insanely strict for a college professor (especially regarding phones, tardies, and absences.) While his lectures can be entertaining he is an EXTREMELY harsh grader and expects you to write EXACTLY what he wants. His feedback is genuinely insulting- he will not only attack your work but you as a person
Extremely harsh with grading. One essay due every week with questions to answer as the prompt, but with no other details besides the word count. Impossible to get above a B on any essay. Feeback on work is unhelpful and very rude. Seems like a knowledgeable person, but not skilled as a professor. Avoid his class at all costs. GPA killer.
I have never had such a horrible experience with a professor as I have with David La Vere. He is incredibly obnoxious, entitled, and rude. He picks on students during class, especially girls, and it is extremely weird and uncomfortable. I cannot stress it enough, DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS.
Terrible. Just terrible. Go read the books if you are interested in the material because it is not worth the time nor money to try here.
A lot of writing but it is easy. His grading makes it impossible though. Expects too much from a course people are taking for a credit. Doesn't give any guidelines to follow besides wordcount and prompt. Accused me of using AI on a midterm even though I didn't and was extremely rude about it. Feedback is condescending and rude. Angry old man.
I truly can't express enough how horrible of a professor Dr. La Vere is. He treats his students with blatant disrespect and is incredibly stubborn, it's his way or no way. His lectures also often get incredibly inappropriate as he asks students (especially women) weird questions on their opinion on certain topics where there is no opinion to be had
Extremely harsh grading, no matter how hard you try to adapt to his feedback he does not care.
I have still yet to understand what exactly he is looking for in the essays assigned. Often accuses of AI and says none of this was in his lectures or commentary even though I had only used the information he provided. Overall, I would not take his history 105 class, it is a bit too stressful for an intro/general education class.
He constantly accuses students of using AI, even when I spend hours editing my essays exactly how he asks. His feedback is rude, condescending, and never constructive. No matter how hard you try, it's never good enough. Extremely discouraging and frustrating class. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!
His lectures were boring and unengaging His slides had limited information and not posted on Canvas He is rude and inappropriate He would call students out in front of the whole class. 10-question pop quizzes in the last 5 minutes of class. Take longer, and he will make degrading comments I could go on, main point is: DONT TAKE HIM - WORST PROF
Don't miss class random pop quizzes, and they are somewhat hard. Essays have to be about what he says and everything he believes. Hard to learn from him, You will not get higher than an 80 on an assignment the whole semester. Good Luck!
