One of the nicest people you will ever meet. I will never forget him.
He is soooooo good, i wish he could have taught Latin 020
Completely reminds me of Ross Geller
Difficult course, was easy years ago but it's much tougher now. Unless you love reading books and know the English language inside out, DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS!!

Sweet, earnest, intelligent, and sexy as Hell.
Very excited about the material, even helped with classes he wasn't teaching us. Overall nice guy.
a lot of hair, a lot of knowledge, makes a mean spinach dip, once played "larry" in a production of "homefree." the best teacher of our time...a force of nature....the KING....a sort of GOD, really.
SO APPROACHABLE! and he really tries to make you understand...he appreciates active participation and inquistiveness. Very, very knowledgeable.
He is just so adorable and bright and funny. He and his wife are the best profs I have seen at Western.
excellent prof. Looks like Archie Bunker!
quirky, but in a good way. hates ppl talking while hes teaching! gets very involved in questions, enthusiastic...loves the material. can't really complain about him. odd dresser tho.
my fav uni prof yet...damn hilarious (says things you wouldnt expect a teacher to :|) ...REALLY nice and willin to help...makes himself available to help outside of class...can be a bit strange but that makes him all the more luvable :P...if hes ur latin prof your in for a fun year/semester :D
Great Prof, his lectures are fantastic, uses technology effectively (ex. powerpoint). Unfortunately, he chose a poor text book, the readings were painful. But nevertheless, still a great prof
Very condescending, he's really intelligent but full of himself. Pay attention to all details in the text he assigns, you're expected to know it. Don't ask anything short of brilliant in class.
amazing, hilarious, helpful, smart, one of the best profs at western by far. really cares about his students.
decent prof

A great prof: By far the funniest prof I've ever had, makes the class engaging and interesting, writes fair exams.
A nice and quirky man and a great prof. Very knowledgeable and passionate about Latin and Classics. He's very funny and a fair evaluator on assignments/tests.
Great at clearly answering questions but doesn't have enough class time to completely cover all the material. Very funny though and makes you want to do well.
ALOT of memorization required! If you're taking it as a bird.. DON'T!! It is very interesting nonetheless and is helpful with biology terms with Greek roots.
Very funny and interesting. Class always flowed nicely and he spiced up the boring stuff with hilarious metaphores.
My best professor yet! Made class interesting and always gave examples to help us understand and remember better.
He's really nice and tries to make his class fun. You can tell that he's really passionate about, you know, ancient stuff... Exams will be a total breeze for you if you attend regularly and take detailed notes. Oh, and, you have to be good at memorizing as well.
Lamari is cleary passionate about what he teaches, which he communicates very well to his class. I think I laughed the most in his class than in any other that year. Make sure to actually do the readings, and take detailed notes as you go.
I had his first year classics 047 class. He is one of the best teachers i'v ever had. He's funny and makes class intresting. he's y I got into classics in my 2nd year. "you ever been at a party and smoked so much pot you sit in one corner with ur friends and that place becomes a world of its own? well thats what sometimes happens at a greek party"
Ok, it's worth it to go to his lectures JUST BECAUSE HE IS SO FUNNY! He makes the funniest comments, and yet he relates everything back to the lesson he's teaching! I took his intro Classics course last year as my bird course, but believe me, it was THE BEST choice! It actually turned out to be my fav class!
He was cool, definitely better than Olsen. He made class enjoyable and the exams were easier to study for because his lectures were memorable. He was a really cute prof. and very PASSIONATE. I would definitely recommend him for anyone studying classical history. I also loved his movie clips:)
Great Prof! Makes the class funny and interesting- he will help you after class if you have any questions. Classics 1000 is a great course and I recommend it for any major!
Incredible Prof. I can honestly say I never touched the boring textbook for classics, but his inspiring lectures got me through and gave me the greatest class experience of 1st year. HIGHLY Recommend!
Lively, fun, intelligent man!
Awesome prof- he really put an effort in to make the class good by making minor changes throughout to improve it. Very friendly and helpful as well as entertaining.
Amazing prof! Made me want to continue classics! Best first year class there is!
It's really hard not to love this professor. As a professor, he gets off track and doesn't always explain things clearly, and the textbook readings are brutal, BUT, he is STILL my favourite prof this year just because he makes me WANT to go to class every time!
He is knowledgable and smart. Very clear and very funny and a very swift mind. Assuming the Chinese chick came to 1 class and sat at the back is his gf, this guy has taste and I am jealous cos she is hot. The only complain: the quiz, we have too many. Make sure you read the text and you should do alright.
Makes you glad you went to class - a very funny guy.
Amazing professor, every lecture makes you look forward to the next, I wish all my other professors had such a passion for their area of study, and made YOU feel passionate about it.
One of the best teacher's at UWO, hand's down. Nobody talks in his class because we are all so into it. He'll make you love the class and want to do really well.
Fantastic professor. He is so excited about what he teaches, and while some lessons are a bit dull, he gets that and tries his best to keep you focused. Everyone gave him a standing ovation at the end of the year, and he deserved it.
Excellent professor who engages his audience. He is so funny, and his tests are extremely fair. If you are in science and used to writing thousands of multiple choice exams you will do extremely well in his sport in antiquity course. His textbook questions are fair, and they are chosen from memorable passages in the assigned readings.
Amazing prof. He manages to engage students even in a 250 person class. He tries to make students think and get them involved. He's always suggesting extra readings for students who are interested. Unfortunately he has a class immediately after so he's not available to talk after class.
Amazing prof. He manages to engage students even in a 250 person class. He tries to make students think and get them involved. He's always suggesting extra readings for students who are interested. Unfortunately he has a class immediately after so he's not available to talk after class.
Sometimes struggles to deliver the course content in a clear manner. Unfortunately, I just didn't find the interest in the course to motivate myself to continue in the course, so I ended up dropping it. If Greek/Roman history isn't your thing, or you have zero previous knowledge in such field, do NOT take this course period.
Highly enthusiastic about material, very engaging and fun. Grades are absolute and entirely theory-based. Tests aren't HARD, but his grading of them is. Esp. if you're taking Latin or Etymology. Not a class for great marks, but a class to have fun in and to learn.
Great lecturer; witty, funny, keeps the class engaged, draws intelligent conclusions from the source material, writes very fair exams that draw both from lecture and reading material. He even said in class he won't ask a question on an exam he thinks 70% of the class won't get right (what other prof would say that? hmm?) Highly recommend CS2300.
hes easy and nice
My favourite prof this year. He was very interesting and I would always be shocked that the hour had gone by. Somehow makes every feel involved even in a 250 class, some class discussions would have 50 raised hands. He had another class right after so unfortunately couldn't talk to him after class, but I am sure he would have stayed if he could.
For some reason, this 40/50 something nerd of a professor is very, very attractive! Probably because he teaches so well and really loves what he does! I'd recommend his course to anyone, even if Classics isn't your thing!
Awesome Prof! Do the readings, go to class, participate and you'll get an A no problem. I hate classics and I got an A without even trying.
loves his job. do all the readings, heavily linked to lecture. exams are fair if you've gone to class and read. great prof
HE WAS AMMMMMMMMMMMMMMAZING! I just found out I have another class by him this year and I legit squealed. Best prof, took him in first year and he made me love classical studies (now I'm doing a minor in it) yay lamari!
Dr. Lamari can not give a coherent lecture to save his life. I'm a good student, and I've done quite well in his course with a high 80 average, but that's less a reflection on his ability to clearly articulate an idea and more my study habits. He's not all he's hyped to be.
When a professor so often relies on the opinions and conclusions of textbooks to form the basis of the course material, it's a poor reflection of their abilities to teach. We aren't paying 1100 bucks a year to learn the opinions of a textbook. If you're happy with an easy B, you'll love this "instructor".
Lamari is amazing! Absolutely love this professor. He is hilarious and down to earth, gives great explanations to help students understand! Exams can be tricky, but study and read. He is very approachable, eager to help students and super easy going to chat with. Definitely take ANY classics course he teaches.
he laughed when he said he had to lower our marks b/c he messed up on test questions. not cool bro
Omg this guy. Actually laughed out loud at least once a lecture. He is so funny and really puts effort into his lectures. Wish I was able to take another classics course just so I could have him as a professor again.
I was really interested in the course content for Classics before class began, and can say afterwards I am even more interested in the subject matter.
Good guy. However, I came into this course with a vast knowledge of classics (it's a passion of mine and I thought this would be an easy A) and I have to say that he does not know as much as I thought he would. Nor does he seem passionate. He has a very close-minded view at times and doesn't seem to "research" what he is saying beyond the textbook.
I would have to agree with the previous comment. Although Lamari has a good sense of humor, his knowledge is very limited. I was very excited for this class but feel disappointed now. He is bias at times and seems very close-minded. Not what I expected from a university professor specializing in classics.
Very engaging, great sense of humour. I love attending his classes. However, he sometimes seems unable to answer students' questions. It gives off the impression that he doesn't know as much as you'd expect him to know (beyond the textbook). Nonetheless, CS 2300 is easy if you go to class, take good notes, and take the course seriously.
Great prof - makes boring concepts interesting. However, tests heavily on the textbook which is unclear, boring and poorly written.
this guy is brutal. course has no relevance to actual history and seems completely made up. all he does he describe what "appears" to be happening in a picture. DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS if you have any interest in TRUE facts.
Interesting course, passionate prof, do the readings, take notes in class and just memorize.
Read the book. He knows just as much as you do, maybe even less in some areas. If something is confusing ask for clarification, as he makes the test questions - so his interpretation matters most.
Horrible prof. His lectures are painfully boring and have no flow at all. He doesn't teach history in chronological order, so you'll be REALLY confused. His exams were almost impossible, most questions were about small details from readings (and there are a LOT of readings) and they were largely irrelevant to the main points of the course.
Great Prof but he focusses on tiny details that are not relevant to the main concepts of the course. The textbook and his slides are at times contradictory.Good thing is that he bell curves up. There's also too much that's tested: lecture, online readinds, and textbook NONE OF which flow into one another.
Not worth the interest, asks for too many things in the exams that do not connect to each other at all, and focusses on the minute details . If you like memorizing everything then this course is for you.
This is the worst class I have ever taken. The prof is unclear and often contradicts what the textbook is saying. Textbook readings are brutal and even if you do attend lectures and do the readings- don't expect to receive the mark you deserve despite your effort. Great way to ruin an average.
Great professor. He cares about students and also takes in consideration that some are not majoring in his subject.
Held good lectures, but expected a lot of reading from the textbook. The midterms were difficult as they asked a lot of questions from the text. In order to do well you must study the textbooks!
Professor David Lamari is absolutely awesome! He has a wonderful way of engaging his students in his lectures that makes you want to learn more! If you can't learn from Professor Lamari, you can't learn at all! Remarkable teaching style! Kudos to you Prof. Lamari! I am so fortunate to have you teach me classical studies :).
Professor David Lamari is absolutely awesome! He has a wonderful way of engaging his students in his lectures that makes you want to learn more! If you can't learn from Professor Lamari, you can't learn at all! Remarkable teaching style! Kudos to you Prof. Lamari! I am so fortunate to have you for my professor! :).
Professor David Lamari is an absolutely awesome instructor. He has a wonderful way of engaging his students in his lectures. You hunger for more. Professor Lamari has a remarkable teaching style, and if you are fortunate enough to have him as your prof, you will have an enjoyable class and a great year.
Classics with Professor Lamari is my favourite course! The exams were straight forward and in no way does he try and trick you. Yes there's a lot of textbook questions but he told you that before hand. If you don't find the work fair you probably should have studied more. Really clear and engaging class!
It was a great course.
The amount of work won't correlate with your mark. Tip: Don't waste your time and study the main points and events that actually make up the history. Just take careful note on all the little tiny irrelevant things he mentions in passing during lectures. You'll be good to go for exams!
i had lamari for classics and it was by far my favorite lecture and that's saying something because it was from 7-10pm. I would stronly reccomened attending lecture if you don't you better have a damn good friend that will give you all the notes, it's 70% lecture based
Professor Lamari was extremely passionate about what he was teaching however he sometimes got very off topic and would often repeat the same thing over and over again. It took us a while to get through all the slides he wanted to. He asked a lot of questions of obscure things in the textbook but all in all he was an awesome prof
Best prof I've ever had
Good sense of humour, interesting use of anecdotes to elaborate on concepts and events, clear passion for the material.
I liked him as a person but I hated his teaching style. Some of his lectures were incorrect or didn't have enough historical evidence to back them up, yet taught them as fact anyways. i'm specifically referring to his lecture on Jesus, he didn't even mention it wasn't based on cold hard fact, which it wasn't! I feel cheated out of an education.
Great prof! You can tell he is very passionate about what he teaches and seems to thoroughly enjoy talking about it. Hilarious at times too! Definitely go to the lectures, as 70% of test questions are about points talked in class and he doesn't post any notes online. I would love to have him as a prof again!
I found Prof Lamari's lecture style nearly impossible to follow, and in his 3hr lectures he often speaks only to the first few rows on one side of the room, making it hard for the rest of the 300 something students to engage. Also, when he tells you to go dish out $100s on the newest, "mandatory" edition - don't. He still uses the older editions.
Lamari is so passionate about his subject, and it is awesome! I loved him! Everything made sense! Make sure to do the readings, 1/4 of the questions on exams are taken strictly from there, 1/2 from just lectures, and 1/4 from both. It's mostly memorization. Take good notes and look for main ideas, especially in text book, and you should be good!
I would highly recommend Lamari. He is very passionate about his class (I took CS 1000) and it shows. He tells jokes, anecdotes and makes the class come alive. Despite the fact it is a large class (probably 300 students) you feel comfortable participating and asking questions. He is a fair marker, put in the work and you'll do well. Got an 85%.
You absolutely must do the textbook readings. Half of test questions are directly from the textbook.
Lots of reading. He seems to change the reading schedules and lectures alot which made his lectures hard to follow without the background, at times. He's an interesting professor. He tries to relate terms/events to modern day. He makes his lectures pretty funny. All exams are multiple choice. Do the readings before hand and you'll be fine.
By far the best prof I have had. He is hilarious and makes lectures super interesting! If you do the homework and readings and go to lectures there is no reason you won't get a 90 at least! Before exams he offers a question period so you can ask as many questions you want! Recommend 100%
Attended every single lecture- definitely a must to pass, but looked forward to it. Absolutely fascinating and hilarious, wish I could take it over again.
Lots of reading, but he clearly tries his best to help you succeed. He is very fun and animated during classes. He goes through the exams and makes sure he improves on it every time. Funny and great!
It's the class you get excited to go to
He's jumpy, hard to follow and makes too many changes to the homework assigned. Impossible to get an app outside of hours. Class itself is useful. Slides 90% graphics. Answers to text q's vague so argue away on part marks. Got a 90 easy. All memory. Do the work, use cue cards and it's a breeze. Go to class 2nd half esp. Nice but disorganized.
Screws students over by changing the textbook in the middle of the year. The textbook itself teaches more than the professor himself. Material was personally boring (it depends on the person) and overall was an unpleasant experience
The course overall was great if you can just keep ontop of your course and so if you can just memorize the homework assigned and make flash cards you should be able to do well in the course. Lectures are 3 hours that usually don't reach 3 hours and are once a week so it's very chill
Very engaging! Looked forward to lecture.
Lamari was hilarious and really knew what he was teaching it inspired countless students. Actually inspired me to continue on in Classics
I Always loved classics and this prof made it that much better, he made me want to go to class and I never missed one all year. Pay attention in class and do a bit of reading, it's extremely fair difficulty and easily achievable. Take any of his classes.
Makes classics very fun to learn, makes classes very interesting but you need to read a lot
Is nice to take if your schedule is very essay-course heavy but you HAVE to do the readings and attend every class. He makes it interesting and it very funny though.
i wasnt interested in classics before i took his course, he is enthusiastic and passionate about what hes teaching that it makes the student feel the same way, he is a god
Thought this class would be SUPER boring, and it wasn't exactly thrilling but Lamari made it as interesting as possible. Wish I had put more effort into memorizing the vocab, as that's the main thing it takes to do well on the tests. I wouldn't skip class with this one, he posts his lecture slides but they're not very explanatory. Good prof.
Loves what he teaches, but he's an awful prof. Lectures are messy, hard to follow and tedious. He speaks for 1hr 35min straight without a break. His midterm questions are poorly thought out and will focus on one minute detail he mentioned in class briefly rather than stories he emphasized in class. Re-watching his lectures are no help.
when i started the course i was doing the readings but by the second half i stopped (and i got better grades)... i would recommend just going to class and paying super close attention and definitely record the lectures if u can. Overall, i think hes a really good lecturer- the content can seem dry but he makes it interesting
He is good at lecturing and making the material interesting, but his exam questions focus excessively on minute details, purposefully make them convoluted by using different wording than what was used in class that leads to misinterpretation of the question, and by using ambiguous wording. Also sometimes contradicts himself in lecture.
By far the worst lecturer at Western. Comes up with the most ambiguous questions and he is really stubborn that his questions are fair when they are really not. Tests you on the most stupid detail you can never even imagine and theres always two answers that both seem right and you just have to guess which one Lamari thinks is more right.
Don't listen to the recent reviews about Lamari and 2300 - a lot of people expected this course to be an absolute bird, put 0 effort and expected a 90. I never thought I would be interested in Classics, but Lamari makes every lecture very engaging and relatable (his references are great). Record every lecture and take good notes - no need to read
Really solid, entertaining lectures. Seems like a prof that actually cares, he goes to the effort to learn student names and make himself readily available outside of class. Solid course for broadening your general education.
Good at explaining stuff, but the course itself is pretty boring. There's no need to read the textbook, just record the lectures instead. One thing though: he likes to make test questions on the smallest details, so study early !
Guy's a superstar, gives over 100% on the classics exams, totally awesome & really weird-funny
As long as you memorize the vocab this class is an easy A
You can tell that hes really passionate about what he teaches and explains things clearly to make sure everyone understands.
funniest prof. pretty interesting content. he acknowledges that everyone is new to the vocab, content etc. and makes a point to explain everything clearly. discusses quizzes immediately after and will accept multiple answers if class was confused about a question. lots of reading but as long as you do it it's an easy enough course.
The vocab class was one of the easiest I've taken. It was very light hearted and fun, especially with a small class. If you had any interest in etymology before the class it's an easy A. Tests are very clear and never too much memorization, also more than enough time is given to write them. Don't worry about trying to stay awake in lectures
lectures were honestly kinda boring, make sure that you go to class cause his slides make no sense otherwise. DO NOT take as a bird course, seriously. there's so many better options. just evaluated by 3 things (2 midterms and a final), and it's so disorganized. nice guy but course honestly was a waste of time.
Very engaging lecturer and delivers the content in an interesting manner. I'm quite surprised at how much I enjoyed the course in retrospect and I think it can be largely attributed to him.
Funny lectures, decent amount of reading, but as long as you memorize the facts the exams are pretty easy.
Lamari is a fantastic lecturer. His lectures are worth going to just for entertainment. If you go to the lectures you don't need to read all the textbook because he'll tell you the specific parts you need to read. Take lecture notes and study for the midterms and this will be the easiest class of your life. If you don't study you're screwed though.
Instead of marking exercises, Prof Lamari prefers to make questions on the midterm (openly admitted) "impossible to know without looking up prior" causing students to memorize both the whole vocabulary of prefixes, stems, and suffixes in the lectures, the "fun fact" notes section of the textbook, and all of the assigned questions AND answers.
Very sharp witted and eloquent
Although the full year course is not done, he is honestly so amazing. 3 hr lectures do not feel long as he is quite funny and the content is interesting. Sit at the front, take good notes, read the textbook, and everything will be fine. Good bird course.
Amazing lecturer, as long as you go to the lectures and take notes you will get an 80+!
Horrible prof. Yes, his lectures are interesting but they're way too tedious and on top of that, he assings 3 mandatory textbooks and only gives 8 minutes for 10 quiz questions and a 55 MCQ CUMULATIVE FINAL EXAM. NOT enough time to even think, my goodness; don't take this course. lamari loves to see his students suffer
Just don't take this course. You'll regret it if you think it's a bird course. It's not and has proven to be one of the most challenging courses
What does he even do all day? Assigns pre-recorded 2 hour length audio recordings with no visuals except for a follow-along slideshow and refuses to listens to students' concerns. When confronted, he does not listen and refuses to acknowledge his own mistakes.
Unfortunately I have to agree with the other reviews. His online course is a such mess and Lamari really neglects the well-being of his own students when they truly are suffering and need help. Vague slideshows too
Prof Lamari is a nice guy, but unfortunately, his teaching skills leave much to be desired. One of the glaring issues with Prof Lamari's teaching style is the overwhelming amount of work he assigns to his students. It often feels as he is more focused on quantity rather than quality.
Prof. Lamari is an amazing professor, I had him for CS1000 for the 2023/2024 school year and it was amazing. I'd recommend at least skimming the textbooks, but I was able to easily get an 80 just by going to lectures.
Fantastic professor. Not only was he hilarious and kept me invested in his lectures at 7 at night, he also explained his topics extremely well. The people posting badly about him clearly didn't attend the lectures or keep up with any of the assigned readings. He is an amazing person and professor who deserves a MUCH higher rating.
Such a passionate and funny prof. So engaging even at 7-10pm. Clearly loves his job and genuinely cares about his students. Whole grade is made up by 4 exams, very textbook heavy. Definitely go to lectures for notes, skim textbook after. Overall great class, great prof, easy A by just memorizing key facts.
lamari's lectures were probably the only ones i consistently attended last year. listening to him is like listening to a david attenborough documentary on greek/roman history (in a good way). he's also a very lenient grader, and often curves textbook exam questions. overall very reasonable and amazing prof
quizzess are all tricks
It was an online class, which subjectively is harder to engage in. With that being said, Lamari is a solid professor and I can understand why people love his classes. Not really my cup of tea when it comes to course outline and structure, would be nice if there was opportunities to get better mark besides testing.
So passionate and funny, he clearly knows what he is talking about, he has so much knowledge.
Prof. Lamari has made me extremely interested in Classicsl studies due to his very entertaining lectures imo. Exam questions are fair, take good notes as practically any observation he makes in lectures is testable. Beware that he directly references the textbooks in exam questions so you can't just not do the readings and expect to ace the tests.
He is often incorrect about history, and I have to relearn everything from my textbooks and other sources. -100/10, would not recommend.
women are laptops
favourite prof, least favourite class. I feel personally victimized after every midterm because they absolutely rape me in the ass. this class is only midterm based (no assignments or quizzes) so if you do poorly on a midterm, which is very likely, its over for you. don't take this class as an elective.
