Worst class ever. He had to explain the project about 10 times and still no one really understood it. Bragged about how hard his tests were (and they were HARD). Take this class if all you want to learn about is experiments that have been done in the field.
Seems like a nice guy at first, but material is sketchy, he doesn't explain anything and thinks we are smarter than we really are. Terrible.
Stay away, far far away. Unless you are a super genius that is. This guy does not explain anything, and tests are way too hard, which he brags about. Get a life!
He's a new prof and he puts alot of emphasis on his interest, false memories. Difficult exams and a research paper that was difficult to understand and boring to write.
Good prof, definitely knows his stuff, helpful and straightforward, exams were about average difficulty, material was interesting and often applicable to daily and student life. Strongly recommend this class and prof to anyone interested in cognitive psychology, or even just a psychology elective
Class was very boring and sketchy. He seemed like a pushover at times(to certain students) and didn't really take control of the class. His assignment was difficult to know what exactly he wanted, ten pages of what?!
Not the best, not the worst. Interesting at times boring at others. The textbook is very boring for this class, but he claims he had no other choice. The assignment is vague. TA was instructed to mark the the research assignment analysis on "creativity" skipping an assesment of the analysis. Does this make sense? Neither does anything else.
Didn't know what he wanted for the assignment, and didn't answer questions about the assignment. Hard exams and not standardized, don't know where the class average came from. Terrible Prof, don't take this class
I took the class in 05, the assignment was helpful in preparing for 300 classes but very unrealistic for a 200 level assignment. although he gave the data and outline to write the paper, many people did not have stat knowledge and were completly lost. Be prepared to work and you'll do great. He's the one of the most approachable Psy profs.
David is a good prof. He's very helpful and approachable. He encourages questions but if your uncomfortable talking infront of everyone hes willing to stay after class and help you. His expectations for the paper are clearly outlined but exams are difficult. Be sure to read, know who did what when and how.He sincerly wants students to do well :)
Good guy, but forgot he was teaching a 200 level course and not a graduate course. Probably a great prof in 300 level courses and above, but not great in this course. Teaching style was a'la 'stream of consciousness' - not very organized, althogh he tries to be.
i think he is a great prof and i found this class very educational. will recommend to everyone.
Tough class. Decent prof. Better suited for grad school teaching. Very focused on research and not broad concepts.. which are what 200 level classes are typically for.
I've said it before and I will say it again, He's the smartest dude in the psych. department. Ive taken two of his classes, and never seen a prof so involved with what he teaches. Also very approachable and helpful. Hard marker, but he just expects out of his students what he expects out of himself.
He grades term papers and midterms based on expectations higher than the ones he outlines for you. That said, if you are having trouble in the class he is very approachable and willing to try to help you. It's a good idea to attend class and take notes as the text he assigned isn't very much fun to read and quite dense.
Monotonous, but puts a lot of effort into presentation of material & explanation of concepts. Clear expectations, so it isn't difficult to get a good grade with effort. Very helpful & approachable. Tests/assignments/exam are reasonable. As mentioned, it's definately a good idea to be in class to take down the extra notes to get good grades! :)
Explains everything VERY well. He knows his material inside and out. He wants to be there and teach you this stuff! Very good prof...Tests are mostly fair. Textbook is a good thing to have.
reading the text and proper APA are very important
A little bit Dry but will go to almost any length to help you out. Really tries to help you decide what you want to do with your degree and discuss career options. Great prof.
Aweful prof. He is boring and dry and has the worst lecture notes. Goes off onto too many tangents. Do not take his class!!
He was a bad prof. He went off on so many tangents and talked about nothing that had to do with the class. Everything was from the book, which he didn't even mention stuff from in class.
He speaks more words in an hour and a half than i thought was physically possible. He makes you write the notes down, he goes too fast with slide forcing you to focus all your energy on writing while he explains stuff. Either take the notes or listen, you can't do both. You never know what he's saying is important or not. Marks tough.
Avoid taking a class with him at all costs! He marks term papers incredibly hard, it is very hard to understand him and he never posts lecture slides online (we have to write them down while he talks in class)! He gives many examples related to memory but if you haven't taken a memory course then it's really hard to understand him!
Difficult prof. He seems to have a stuttering problem during lectures and likes to go off on a tangent. He makes it seem as if reading the textbook is extremely important, yet the exams have almost nothing to do with the textbook material. I would not recommend his class to anyone.
talks way to much. do not ask for help after class as he will not answer your questions. even if you have logical reasoning he will send you away with a figure it out yourself. notes he posts are not very useful as they do not cover a lot of the things on exams. his test questions are random and way to specific and sometimes not very clear.
Disorganized, incomprehensible notes, goes off on way too many tangents that he misses the point of every slide. Got a headache during every class. I think he thought he was teaching at least a 400-level. Marks incredibly hard but is open to differing opinions. He made this material harder than it needed to be.
He is a very good person, but a lackluster professor. He knows his stuff. Like really knows his stuff. His lectures consisted of him charismatically talking about... Stuff. It wasn't relevant to the course very often but it was extremely interesting. The textbook is your best friend: this class was an easy mark with the right amount of work put in.
AVOID! Going to classes was painful. Between mispronounciations (it's hippocampus, not hypocampus), incorrectly naming things (the occiput is the back of the head, not another name for the occipital lobe), and rambling ENDLESSLY it was a complete waste of time to attend lectures. Marks hard to make up for easy course.
Nice guy. Talks alot during his lectures. Really knows his stuff. Textbook is your best friend if you want to pass the class - Class notes that he provided not as helpful as I think he thought they would be. Always available to help if needed though. Would recommend.
Dr. Lane is very knowledgeable. It's a good class, but he can mark exams/papers hard. He is very helpful and friendly. His only downfall is that he goes on tangents lots, so be careful to pick out what is important when he speaks (while writing at the same time) as he doesn't post notes. Overall good professor though. He expects lots from students.
He was easy to listen to. He basically went over everything that was in the textbook. He knew what he was talking about. I enjoyed going to his class, but I skipped quite a bit.
Tends to ramble a lot.. Textbook reading was manditory since I didn't find his lectures very useful.
horrible, absolutely horrible, not a bad professor but the tests are ridiculous, read the text book, came to lectures, made my own multiple choice questions, did the tests, and still came into a test feeling revolted by the amount of nonsense questions that had nothing to do with the info taught or read
TEXTBOOK MANDATORY. He rambles in class. I've fallen asleep several times. Just read the textbook that's all the tests are about. but he seems like a nice guy!
His lectures come straight from the textbook with some extra rambling. Attending isn't really necessary. The exams consist of a bunch of multiple choice questions that have nothing to do with what is taught or read.
David loves psychology and he tends to ramble because he's quite passionate about it. His exams are pretty tough because there's not very clear organization in lectures. Make sure you read and take notes from the textbook!
He goes on lots of tangents and does not post slides. Gives paper and exam instructions with lots of generalities and then marks hard on a specific number of things that he did not make clear beforehand. He gives little structure to help his students. Disorganized. His exams are scattered and difficult to prepare for. Do not take a class from him.
Great prof! David had really awesome lectures and had lots of demonstrations and videos to facilitate learning. Definitely go to class, he's an interesting guy and his voice isn't monotone or boring. He's very passionate about what he is talking about. If he gives you HIGHLIGHT NOTES, definitely look at them for studying! Best textbook ever as well
He really likes using his opinion to dictate what he speaks about in lectures, then goes on lengthy tangents to discuss highly theoretical ideas based on opinion. He forgets a lot of neuropsychology/anatomy and is inconsistent with his thoughts and is disorganized. He does care about his students, and is approachable outside of class.
Was not impressed by Prof Lane. His exams were easy, out of the textbook. His grading of the papers was inconsistent with what you'd normally expect from a psyc prof, and gives poor feedback on the grading. Save yourself the headache if you can.
I loved this class! If you paid attention the midterms and paper were pretty easy. He does go off topic sometimes but spends a long time on each chapter. He was clear about everything he wanted on the paper and what we should expect on the exams. Easy to talk to after class as well. Highly recommend him for this class!
David Lane seems like he wants his students to fail. His lectures make absolutely no sense and the only way to understand anything is to read the textbook. If you can avoid it, dont take a class with him. His exams are extremely difficult and he asks questions that were of the littlest detail in the textbook.
David is a good professor. He brought in a few guest speakers which was pretty cool. He graded easy on the essay. Read the textbook, he does question from it. Overall, I enjoyed his class and would take it again.
Prof. Lane is very knowledgeable and wants his students to do well. He gives you pop quizzes throughout the term that are not graded but for you to see where you stand in the class. His exams are very difficult but is expected considering the subject.
Professor Lane is my favorite prof. At first I was a little confused because he doesn't make any slides for this class, but soon I realized it actually didn't matter. He does pop quizzes (ungraded) and gives a lot of activity during class. He's super nice and approchable outside class. Definitely will take another class with him.
Very knowledgeable, relates lectures to real life situations which makes subjects more understandable.
The class itself is read from the textbook. The marking on the papers were horrible with little feedback. And all the exams had questions that were made to trick you. I would not recommend taking this class.
This class was an absolute mess. The exams were based on the most random small irrelevant details, the grading on the papers made very little sense and his lectures were nothing but him rambling. Be prepared to read the WHOLE textbook because the lectures make no sense. I 100% do NOT recommend this class and would not take another class from him.
You need the textbook for this class. Questions on tests come from random blurbs in the textbook that often aren't covered in class. That said, he's very easy to meet with outside of class and he uses lots of the same questions on the final that he did on the midterms. If you look over your midterms before the final it's easy to get a good mark.
David is a nice enough guy but his lectures are very random and he is very scatter brained. He asked very specific questions from the text to trip you up. Get ready for a midterm the last day of class. Taking a developmental psychology was tough enough, I can't imagine taking a cognition class with him. Would not recommend.
Friendly and cares about his teaching. Read the text and you will do fine.
You're only graded on your two midterms and your final, with the option of bonus marks from the participant pool. He's a good lecturer, not a hard grader, good choice.
Loved his class. Fairly easy to do well in his class as he does non-graded pop quizzes to help
He is an incredible prof and genuinely good person. If you put in the effort, you'll get a good grade. PSY 253 is a bit more challenging relative to his other developmental classes. For all, you have to read the text. I'd recommend memorizing the key terms. I really like that he gives options for the term paper and is flexible about the topics!
I really dislike his lecture style, he was all over the place scattered and expects you to know what he's talking about. His powerpoint were so annoying! They're not even proper notes, just the headings of the topics you need to know. The exams are hard, with specific questions. He seem like a nice prof but a terrible lecturer!
He's passionate about what he teaches and his cheerful demeaned makes up for the boring class. He conveys the material very well. His smile is like drowning in a sea of the most adorable puppies and kitties, its so nice. Never met a prof with such a comforting smile. It is literally life changing
Read through the textbook chapters and highlight using his slides as a guide. Easy tests if you commit to taking the time to doing that. (I such at tests. I was pleasantly surprised by how straightforward his were). He is very caring of his students and wants them to succeed. Will give practice tests in class because he knows it helps your memory.
David Lane is extremely humble, kind, and caring. He is clearly passionate about his career choice, which really shows when he discusses his favourite topics. His lectures can be difficult to follow at times and reading the textbook is almost absolutely mandatory for the midterms, but his kind character and demeanour make his classes worth it.
Great Prof! Good attitude! Very down to earth Guy - Great at giving explains that relate to real life. - Inspirational course line - Worked in groups (class bonding) -Marked fair but tough on essay
David was a okay prof, he was super caring about his class and super humble and kind to everyone in the class. He could be quite monotoned at times, and I found myself not paying attention at times - but overall pretty solid dude. Midterm was tough, and you definitely gotta read the textbook to do well in his class. Always willing to help you tho.
David Lane is a kind and caring man. His warmth and love radiate. His lectures can be a bit dry but his slides are very helpful and posted online. Midterm and final were average; maybe on the easy side-- but if you read the textbook it'll be a breeze. Some test questions refer to stories from the textbook (your'e welcome). Usual term paper ofc
David is an awesome professor - hes very passionate about his research and memory. Hes very easy to contact outside of class and has handled the transition online very well. The midterms and quizzes rely heavily on the textbook so make detailed notes. He posts recorded lectures right when class is supposed to start which is nice.
Dr. Lane was awesome! Super easy to reach outside of class, and he really cares about his students. You can tell he really enjoys his job as well. He tests out of the textbook a fair amount so be sure to read it, especially the stuff he doesn't discuss in depth in the lectures. He also had a weekly live lecture for any questions, which was helpful!
There is not enough I can say about professor Lane. This semester has been a tough one for me dealing with a few things as well as it is completely online, and he was nothing but helpful and understanding. It's obvious he likes teaching and cares about his students understanding of the material, and also their wellbeing. Overall great prof :)
Doctor Lane is an extremely nice guy! His assessments are straight forward, and if you read the book thoroughly, you will definitely get above 90 on them! Little details from the book can show up on the exams too, so make sure you read the book well!!
David Lane was a really nice guy, but a dry professor. I loved the material of the course - super interesting - but the way it was taught was just a simple reiteration of the textbook. It was online due to COVID, but still found it quite dry regardless. Get ready for 4 quizzes, 2 midterms, a paper, and a final. Heavy on testing but a fair grader!
Doctor Lane is the nicest professor you will probably meet, and I mean that. He is extremely empathetic and adjusts deadlines based on individual circumstances. For his examinations, reading the textbook and taking thorough notes on it will get you a good mark! If you watch the lectures after that, you can definitely get a 90! With the bonus, a 95!
One of the best and kindest prof's i had in my undergrad. I have taken all of his classes and he's such a genuine person who actually cares about his students. He gives good feedback and will help you get a good grade if you put in the work
David is an amazing proff! He is very kind and caring and you can tell that he wants all of his students to be successful. There are many opportunities to receive good marks through quizzes, midterms, essay and the final. All of the course work is very fair and you can do well if you work hard and read. Highly recommend this proff and this class!
David lane's deserves a best professor's award. He's super nice and I like his course structure. Definitely I recommend this professor.
Grading was divided between 4 quizzes, 2 midterms, paper, and final. It seemed like a lot at times but actually ended up being helpful when it came to the final exam. Dr. Lane is a little bit monotone, but incredibly knowledgeable and would probably be better in person. Non-textbook material is sometimes covered in lecture so attendance is key.
David definitely knows his stuff, and it shows in his lectures. He keeps content (memorize how brain works) simple: all MC Quizzes, MTs, Final, and Essay. Lots to cover, but he explains like you're 5, and is easy to contact, so thumbs up. However, he doesn't take advantage of the online format, so you'll have to rely on lectures and (useful) text
-Hard grader especially for the term paper. Will not change the grades, will pick out more mistakes to justify the actions of the TA so you can accept the grade. Avoid at all costs! Even if you have a high grade in the class, the term paper will definitely bring it down.
Dr. Lane is a very caring and understanding professor. He does expect a lot from his students so reading the textbook closely is required for exams. However, he is responsive to emails and speaks to students directly about any concerns over the fairness of test questions. He is passionate about his subject which made learning enjoyable.
Mr. Lane deserves another teaching award. This man is truly the model prof. His one and only downfall is that he takes awhile to grade term papers. He is never rude to his students in person or thru email. He provides many assignments to make up the grade. He said eyewitness testimonies were the gold standard, but nah, Mr. Lane is the gold standard
Dr. Lane is a really great prof! He is consistent and very organized. He is also kind and caring. Although you do have to work hard in his classes, good grades are attainable and I would definitely recommend him as a prof! His lectures reflect the textbook and his quizzes and exams are fair if you read/study textbook.
I liked the fact that for this course, he went over the quizzes and midterms afterwards. I found this to be very helpful. No other profs I've had have done this.
This professor is normally exceptional, but he could've tried a little harder for this course. Powerpoint slides were basically useless (make notes from the text), he rambled sometimes and his midterms were HARD. Class average for them was LOW. Prof Lane is a great guy but I expected more from him in terms of this class. Maybe take it w someone els
Lane did well teaching this course. But, you MUST remember every detail he says and READ the text if you want to do well on midterms. His mids are hard and his questions can be very specific. This guy does not give freebies- you must work extremely hard. Nice man though, you can email him about anything n he listens to you and will take complaints.
The class it self is super interesting. However Dr. Lane is not a good professor he just reads directly from the textbook, gives lack luster lecture slides, is not a very engaging presenter, and gives no guidance on assignments and then takes lots of points off for minor mistakes.
The professor was tough on midterms and term paper. There were no specific instructions or rubrics for term paper. The grading was tough.
The "this is mostly common sense" mentality will not work well on exams. Dr Lane tests on stats or one sentence guest speakers say. Read the textbook cover to cover and use the bonus marks he gives for the Participant Pool. He's a kind person but he goes through the material really fast and the PowerPoints aren't great. Also no practice exams :(
Very good prof, was very passionate about what he teaches and every test was the same structure, had mostly multiple choice and then one or two short answer questions in which you could choose between 2 different short answer questions to answer. Saved me a couple times because I only knew how to answer one. Would recommend this prof highly.
Such a wonderful prof, his test questions are specific so make sure you read the text
